Juliette Lewis in Vivienne Westwood at the SAGs: stunning or way too wacky?

Juliette Lewis

People looked forward to August: Osage County for many reasons, but I for one am glad that it’s brought Juliette Lewis back to the red carpet. She may not be a conventional beauty, but she’s always weird, wacky, and whimsical without falling into the “twee” category. Juliette has a very strong personality, which makes her choice of gowns last night somewhat intimidating. There’s a possible clash of personalities at work here.

Juliette left her usual Zac Posen at home (remember how she wowed at Critics’ Choice last week?) and wore a Vivienne Westwood Gold Label gown instead. This dress looks like a mural! It’s not bad, but Vivienne and Juliette are practically duking it out to see which of them shall come out alive. I love the blue color of the dress and the floral pattern. The draped neckline gives this dress an old-school feel while the fabric makes it look funky too. I want to like this dress, and I think what’s throwing me off is Juliette’s hair. Toss some powder on that head, and she’d look like one of the founding fathers.

Malin Ackerman

Malin Ackerman wore Naeem Khan and looked like she really loved the hell out of this dress. I think it’s pretty gaudy and faux-Egyptian. Katrina Bowden did black and gold well last night, but Malin looks an utter fright in this dress. This is a clear case of the dress wearing the girl.

Portia De Rossi

Portia De Rossi went for basic black in Saint Laurent. This is a good look for Portia, and the backless portion mixes things up and keeps the boring away. I wish she’d grow her hair back out. She looks cute enough with a pixie cut, but I want to see those rolling curls that were so famous in her Ally McBeal days.

Amanda Peet

Amanda Peet wore a confusing dress with way too much going on at once. Are those flowers? I don’t know. Certainly the striped sheer sleeves, bizarre crochet pattern at the bodice, the twiggy pattern around the midriff, and the iridescent whatever else of the skirt would be enough without flowers. At least she wore her hair back so as not to distract from all that fug.

    Everyone looks…tampered with.

    • Kellie says:

What has Portia done to her face! She has the “too much botox” rabbit nose, and I dont even know what else!
And the close up face pic of juliette is freaking me out! Like an insane clown!

      • Liv says:

What I thought! I heard that Botox causes little wrinkles on your nose because everything else is just frozen – she looks exactly like this! Scary!

      • jaye says:

She has a bit of that “I’m ready for my close up, Mr. DeMille” look to her face. Especially in that first pic.

      • gabby says:

Agreed, I was scrolling down and was like noooooo. Why has Portia messed with her face? She looks like a monster now and I always thought she was pretty and funny.

  2. Nicolette says:

Ugh! Does anyone look in a mirror and think for themselves or do they just listen to what their stylists tell them? It’s like the stylists are these annoying sales people in a boutique that tell you what you want to hear so you buy the item. So much available to them all, and so few can seem to get it together this year. Disappointing.

  3. Jeneric says:

    I didn’t know M.C. Escher did fashion.

  4. Gwen says:

Have you seen Juliette in the newest edition of The Edit? She looks fab. I like her look here too. A shame she’s a COS member, kind of makes it hard to like her fully.

  5. Meredith says:

I don’t love Juliette’s hair, but I *love* that dress. I’ll always prefer something colorful and/or patterned to a boring black dress.

  6. pru says:

Juliette looks great, which we don’t get to say very often!
Never would have recognized Portia de Rossi. So unnecessary.

I’m grateful to these beautiful women of Hollywood for giving me these cautionary tales of plastic surgery. I was always confident I’d get some as I get older, but aside from “maintenance” injections & a standard moderate facelift much later in life, I think I will leave everything else ALONE.

One’s essential structure should be left alone, like Demi Moore. Even Sandra Bullock is looking too something these days. And Demi’s teeth are huge too. Original face is good face.

  7. MacScore says:

“Toss some powder on that head, and she’d look like one of the Founding Fathers.” HAHAHAAA!! Great comment!
I actually find Amanda Peet’s dress rather interesting; she just wore it to the wrong occasion.

  8. JH says:

Portia’s face looks…bizarre. I love her so much but something ain’t working. Like the dress, though.

    • hunter says:

Any structural adjustments (actual surgery, not injections) to one’s face are a horrible idea. I appreciate these women for making these choices to further my education so I don’t have to. 🙂

  9. lenje says:

Ahhhh… thank youuu!! I love, love, LOVE, Juliette’s dress! I know it’s rather an unusual choice, and I see it was hated by some blogs, but I think it’s gorgeous. The hair could’ve been better styled. (I think some bangs won’t hurt). Other than Juliette, on this page I like Portia’s dress (although I’m a little underwhelmed with another black).

    • Mairead says:

Gorgeous dress on her – it suits her personality. I actually like the hair and makeup too. But I love me some Juliette so perhaps I’m biased? 😉

  10. Marianne says:

Hated Juliette’s dress. Hated Amanda Peet’s too.

Portia looks ok. Just ok. Malin’s dress is ok too. But did she put a grey streak in hair or something?

  11. Lux says:

I get so depressed now days when I see Juliette Lewis, she’s too awesome to be a scientologist. Also, I’m pretty sure Amanda Peet’s stylist hates her.

  12. Carrie says:

Love Malin Ackerman and Juliette Lewis’ dresses, Amanda Peet’s is fugly, Portia’s is boring.

  13. jaye says:

As far as Amanda Peet’s dress, what state of mind could one be in when picking a dress that looks like THAT?

  14. Did Portia get her eyes done? They look wonky to me.

  15. gabby says:

I usually don’t like floral dresses, but this one is really pretty and I like it paired with the multicolored gemstones for a colorful, fun look.

  16. rep says:

I am so disappointed about Portia’s botoxing or whatever she’s doing to her face. She t used to be so beautiful. It is amazing to me that Ellen keeps getting prett ier, and Portia is not the pretty one anymore. Ellen needs to stop her, she can’t think that this makes Portia look better. I have also been wishing she would grow her hair long again.

    • hunter says:

I think Ellen just does injections & lasers while Portia looks like she’s had some actual surgery – her face is way different, like her features are now in a different place. That can only be accomplished through surgery.

  17. Az says:

Juliette Lewis is BANANAS but that dress looks gorgeous on her. I can’t get over her voice. She sounds permanently stoned.

  18. A Fan says:

Malin Ackerman looked fabulous in her dress. Regardless of one’s personal like or dislike of the dress, she looked great in it.

[I happen to like it, too.]

  19. lucy2 says:

Juliette’s dress is pretty, but I don’t know if I like it as a dress, if that makes any sense. Her hair is odd too.
Amanda Peete is so pretty yet always dresses strangely.
Malin’s dress makes her look very boxy, and I wish she’d go to a darker shade of blonde.
I like Portia’s dress OK, and her hair looks great straightened out, but she definitely has had some work done, it was very noticeable when Arrested Development came back. Hopefully it’s something that loosens up and fades over time, and she doesn’t do anymore.

  20. Carolyn says:

I really like Juliette’s dress. We need people who don’t dress cookie-cutter “safe” and conventional.

  21. Bitca says:

Love Juliette, despite her Scilon faith (she has never advanced far enough to discover the wacked-out & nasty-at-the-top nature of her cult) & the dress. But geez; she’s 40-something, right? Delighted to see a talented, non-generic-looking actress getting a nice role, but SO sad to see as well the ‘work’ performed on that lovely, unique face.

Juliette’s starting to look like a “Real Housewife.” The minimal body fat makes it stand out all the more. I’m sure most Hwood agents insist their 30+ actresses get ‘tox injections &c, & do their best to scare women with bleak depictions, painting a future holding no decent job prospects. And that s*cks. Provided she doesn’t smoke or abuse any intoxicants, if JL gained just a few lbs? I bet her natural face would glow, look livelier & almost line-free. Sans facial injections… & Scilontology Purification Rundowns. Marilyn Monroe died at about 36–still gorgeous and free of any cosmetic injections or surgery.
