Lupita Nyong’o in Stella McCartney at the PGAs: stunning or style-miss?

wenn21008320

Here are some photos from the Producers Guild Awards last night, where 12 Years a Slave and Gravity had an unprecedented tie for Best Picture. Most of the 12 Years people were in attendance (including Brad Pitt and Chiwetel Ejiofor), and of course, Lupita Nyong’o was the style star of the event. I saw an article claiming that Lupita is this year’s Jennifer Lawrence… I could see that. But I think Lupita really came out of nowhere even more than J-Law, although I’ll admit to noticing that the love surrounding Lupita this year is very much like the love surrounding Jennifer.

Anyway, Lupita wore this beigey Stella McCartney which… I mean, if you want me to NOT hate Stella McCartney, put Lupita in one of her dresses. It’s pretty much confirmed then – Lupita makes even mediocre dresses look stunning. You know what consistently impresses me about Lupita as well? She knows her body. So many women in Hollywood do not know their bodies and that alone is the root of so much unflattering style. Lupita “gets” that her petite body and gorgeous face don’t need a lot of extra crap – she’s mostly going for minimalism, body-conscious clothes, in solid colors. It’s brilliant. PS… It looks like Leonardo is a fan as well.

Director Steve McQueen referred to Sarah Paulson as America’s new Bette Davis. That’s a bold claim, isn’t it? I like Paulson a lot, and I always have, but to me she’s a great character actress, not a Bette Davis-type leading lady. And that’s fine – there’s no shame in being a brilliant character actress whatsoever. Paulson wore Marc Jacobs to the PGAs… eh. I don’t like that we can see her black thong.

But my least favorite look of the night? Claire Danes in Christian Dior. What is going on with her? Why does she look so “off”? Is it just the hair color change? Anyway, I just don’t like this whole look on her.

Lupita’s dress is tres chic. Love the cut-out at the top. Great color, too.

Claire Danes’ dress is really awful.

  2. bns says:

Stunning, as usual. Great color and flawless makeup.

Her little moment with Leo makes me so happy LOL

  3. Dani2 says:

Ugh. Can she stop looking so flawless already? The dress itself isn’t amazing but for some reason, it looks amazing on her. She needs to be the face of a huge fashion label like right now because she makes clothes look amazing.

  4. SonjaMarmeladova says:

Lupita is stunning and very classy. I hope she doesn’t become as annoying as Jennifer.
Sarah’s dress would be amazing if it wasn’t see trough. Did she mess with her face? She looked a bit different in Studio 60.
Claire looks better with the new hair colour. And Hugh is hot.

    • Zadie says:

      +1
Did you see the Q&A with the cast of AH after the SAGs? They were so rude. Except for Amy, that woman is a class act.

      • Lindy79 says:

I saw the pictures. What was with Jennifer’s gurning?? And not just there but in the audience, and she was at it at the Globes too.
I loved her Oscar press room interview but it seems like she’s gone from 0-60 and is trying way too hard to look like she doesn’t care about all the awards and showbizzy element of it.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

        +2
I remember how The Fighter cast was gracious 3 years ago or how SLP cast enjoyed their success last year but here they have the big head and they try hard (Cooper needs to sit down,JLaw needs to stop acting like a 6 years old girl )
I feel a problem soon who will damage their campaign

    • bns says:

Not possible. No one is more annoying than Jennifer.

    • aquarius64 says:

When you can see underwear, and it’s not intentional, it’s a fail.

    • Karolina says:

The work on her face is SO obvious on American Horror Story, her lips are extremely distracting and look like they hurt. Seriously, every time I watch AHS I am mesmerized by how unnatural and tight her upper lip looks.

  5. blue marie says:

I like the dress on Lupita, but not the color.
I didn’t even notice Sarah’s thong until Kaiser pointed it out.
And it’s not just Claire’s hair color, the whole thing looks bad, hate the lip color.

  6. FreeBunny says:

I like Claire Danes but here she looks like a clown.

  7. Josephine says:

Has Claire been messing with her face? She looks puffy and shiny. And while her hair is pretty, the style is really aging her, right?? I can’t quite figure it out, but she doesn’t look good.

  8. V4real says:

She’s beautiful but the top half of her dress looks like the blue gown Amy Adams wore a couple of days ago. Not too many people liked Amy”s dress.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

You stole my idea on the top looks like Amy ‘s dress

Lupita’s dress would be better with a stronger color ( the blue of Amy’s dress?)

    • Tania says:

I think the dress could work if the top were a bolder colour.

    • Audrey says:

      The fit is amazing

But the design and color are underwhelming. It’s funny because yesterday I was thinking that one of the few colors that wouldn’t look great on her would be light brown/beige and I hope she sticks to bold ones.

  9. Tx says:

My favorite part of the Leo article are the side shots that show dat ass! She has such a stunning figure. Get it Lupita!

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

The better part is that Leo is more into her than she’s into him

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        +1!
That’s what he needs. Someone to tell him no (not necessarily talking about Lupita).

But the pictures are cute—I like to see other actors fangirling over each other.

      • Mel says:

        Yeah,because she’s dating Jared Leto 🙂

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @Mel
Ewww…no, I don’t want her with Leto either. He’s besties with that perv Richardson….that’s a total turnoff.

    • brionne says:

Yes! She is very lean and muscular yet boom! Pow! A little surprise in the rearview. She is a sexy woman.

    • jaye says:

Why was that the first thing my eyes gravitated to? Homegirl has it coming AND going.

  10. Anna says:

I love Lupita’s clutch, and the fact that the wavy straps of her sandals play off of the wavy neckline of the dress. That said, the dress is a fug. LN almost pulls it off tho bc of that amazing face, body and carriage.

Everyone else in this post (well, da ladies) is SUCH HOT MESS!!!

    • Anna says:

PS – LN is WAY more of a newcomer/breakout that JLawr was last year. JLawr already worked the awards circuit the year before with Winter’s Bone, and had landed two major franchises. Lupita came out of nowhere. I wonder where she’ll go next.

  11. Luca26 says:

I liked Gravity but it was a popcorn movie with no import whatsoever I hope the Academy is smart enough for once to go with the right film.

  12. Jennifer12 says:

Love Lupita- so flawless and great style. All the other photos look ridiculously overstyled and overdone. Though I think this dress could’ve used a mid calf length.

  13. ToodySezHey says:

She must be extra sooper dooper smoking hot in person because as far as I know, Leo has never been one for the , ahem, brown sugar. All his women( with the exception of Giselle and I think Bar) have been tall leggy and pale and blonde.

Shoot, come to think of it, Im suprised her and Fassbender arent an item, we know he likes ladies of color. But I havent heard of any onset canoodling and he is , in a suprise to me, dating some portuguese model that used to bang on Gerard Butler. Ugh.

    • Kate says:

I would respect Leo so much more if he was with a woman like Lupita but frankly he’s not classy enough for her.

She would never stand for that party lifestyle. It just doesn’t seem like her bag.

  14. Micah says:

    Lupita is just straight up….AWESOME!

  15. Kali says:

I wish Lupita’s dress hit either right at the knee or was a floor length fitted type thing. The length is just a teeny bit off when combined with those sandals.

  16. GiGi says:

Love Lupita! Looking great as always. She’s the only famous person I follow on Instagram – she’s just fantastic. I’m a total fangirl 🙂

  17. Cro-girl says:

This woman can do no wrong, she’s just beautiful. Her skin is amazing.

I really like Claire Danes but she looks strange in that outfit. A little too Stepford maybe?

  18. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lupita – flawless as usual. I love looking at her.

Sarah Paulson. Ok. Let’s wear an ugly disco Sister Wife dress and make it “sexy” by letting our underwear show through because we’ve never heard of a slip. That will be cute.

    Claire. Love you, but no.

  19. lower-case deb says:

    her white coat!

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

GIRL THAT COAT IS THE BUSINESS!!! once again I wished I lived in a place where coats were necessary. sigh.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I can understand that, but believe me, sometimes your coat looks good but your nose is running and red and your eyes are watering from the wind and your lips are chapped and oddly, you don’t look all that great in the coat. Lol

  20. Hypocrisy says:

Lupita is stunning and elegant as usual.
Great leanly toned and curvy body make a good dress beatiful.

  21. Thunderthighs says:

    Lupita, Lupita, Lupita… 😀
Throughout all these awards, I’m surprised no one has mentioned that Lupita can sing too. Like, carry a tune and not make you want to stab your ears in the process. I saw her in her high school’s musical remake of Cinderella and I remember thinking, this girl is going places… I’m so happy for her.

  22. Observer says:

HATE HATE HATE Lupita’s make up here! Love the dress, both the color and fit, but hate the make up! It makes her look old and worn out, just tired and so old! She’s so young, only 30 and the make up here ages her! The lipstick is too dark, same with the blush and eye shadow.
It’s such a shame because I love the color of the dress and everything about it.
I would have loved a nice warm pink/peach blush and lip with some highlighter and white pen inside the corner of her eyes to brighten them up.
Uggghhh, oh well, still love her!

  23. Kim1 says:

I love Lupita but she is close to being overexposed.I know TYAS cast was there to support the producers .I hope she doesnt show up to Directors Guild Awards to support Steve.Too much of a good thing…
Between the parties, awards shows, and soon there will be screenings and Q&A sessions. She needs to pace herself.JMHO.I hopes she wins an Oscar because she really needs that career boost. She is talented but I dont know if Hollywood knows how to cast her.Winning an Oscar as evident by Monique,Jennifer Hudson,Octavia even Halle Berry doesnt mean hitting the Jackpot for Black actresses

    • Dani2 says:

How is she “overexposed”? That is one of those words that is completely overused on this site. She isn’t doing daily pap walks, she isn’t getting into anything controversial stuff.

I agree that black actresses have a harder time maintaining a stellar career after an Oscar win, I have my fingers crossed that things will be different for her and the talented black actresses that come after her.

      • CaribbeanLaura says:

ITA. She is not overexposed at all. She’s just exposed enough. And I have hope that Lupita is going to really break out. Like she’ll be cast in roles that would normally go to the young white ingenues of Hollywood.

      • Kim1 says:

Maybe overexposed is not the right word. But I am starting to read the backlash from being the “it girl”.I am know seeing it on Black Blogs. When a person is treated like they are perfect,”the second coming”,etc.
Lupita hasnt done anything wrong .She is humble, graceful, smart etc.
I like her and I want her to be successful I am just worried and anxious I guess.

      • CaribbeanLaura says:

@Kim1 I hear you. And I get why you may be a bit worried, but I honestly think Lupita will be fine. She’s soooo poised and well spoken. When you compared her to someone like JLaw(who I love) but can definitely come off as obnoxious I think lupita’s soft spoken-ness and poise will help her navigate all this sudden fame just fine.

      • brionne says:

Kim1 it may be that Lupita looks like that cousin in every black blog visitor’s family and people can’t figure out how she blew up all of a sudden much like Jennifer Lawrence looks very girl next door but is universally hailed as beautiful and talented. I really haven’t seen any backlash against her though.

      • Dani2 says:

@Kim1 Oh right, I see what you mean. I wouldn’t worry about her though. She’s the opposite of Jennifer (who I’ve loved since Winter’s Bone but can come across as a little OTT sometimes), she’s got a very reserved way about her and she hasn’t got too many movies coming up for the moment so I don’t think we need to worry about her 🙂

    • ToodySezHey says:

to be fair, alot of white actresses’ careers have fizzled too after Oscar.

marissa tomei, moira sorvino( didnt she win an oscar? I cant remember) melissa leo( but she is more of a character actor than a leading lady anyway)

    • AG-UK says:

      @Kim1
My sentiments exactly. My friend says (he is white) oh it’s a new era it’s not like it was years ago. I said hello it is indeed maybe not so much so but… I can tell you from my perspective you don’t see many black women on the big screen. It seems like they say, oh hold on we have 2 now we can’t just add someone else. I don’t want her to end up with the Oscar curse… as it is, you look at IMDB or whatever J Law has about 6-7 films in pre-production/ finished/filming. LN only has that one coming out. Hollywood can say all these amazing things she is def. talented but I want them to back it up with the film roles. Ends up all talk no action. She might want a not so serious role after 12YAS but time will tell.

    • name du jour says:

I think she does have an advantage over some previous winners – she’s very young and very thin. And of course beautiful, but Hollywood cares most about “young” and “thin.”

    • T.c. says:

      @Kim1

Lupita was one of the presenters at the PGA. She presented the award for best documentary. She wasn’t just there to hang out and support.

  24. Mimz says:

    I love Lupita.
Claire Danes – IMHO she looks like a hanger, she never wears a dress the dresses usually wear her, so i dont know…. This dress looks too baggy. But maybe that’s just me.
But I actually kind of like her hair colour. The lighter blonde washed her out.

  25. Cora says:

I really love Lupita’s skin. She has absolutely gorgeous skin and I can’t stop staring at it. It photographs beautifully. *sigh*

  26. brionne says:

Lupita is cute but I don’t like the color of this dress. Darker skinned people can carry off bright colors and jewel tones and white clothing due to the contrast which allows the features to pop and emphasize the rich coppers, chocolates, caramel, and cinnamon undertones of their skin. This attempt to be tonal on a dark black person actually washes her out. This wouldn’t be attractive on a lighter black person either (Rihanna, beyonce, Zoey Saldana). This color may work on a medium complexion(Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson,Oprah, Whitney Houston, the Obama girls, Jennifer Hudson) but it would probably be blah on them too.

I’m a little caught off guard by the universal agreement that she is beautiful. She is but there are a million cute girls with similar features in Nigeria, London, the Caribbean, and Atlanta. Naomi Campbell and Kelly Rowland are much more visually arresting to me.

Still I’m happy to see Lupita having her moment in the spotlight. She deserves it.

    • Elodie says:

“I’m a little caught off guard by the universal agreement that she is beautiful. She is but there are a million cute girls with similar features in Nigeria, London, the Caribbean, and Atlanta. Naomi Campbell and Kelly Rowland are much more visually arresting to me.”

Because that’s exactly the thing, she is one of those girls with similar features who is in the Hollywood spotlight. Say she could have been a model it wouldn’t have been a big deal since there are lots of Black African models she can remind one of, say Alek Wek, Ajak etc. But because she is in the Hollywood spotlight and getting all them rightful accolades for her acting, it’s kinda different from that angle….

    • ennie says:

but she can act! glad that there are movies (slavery topic aside) out there being made that are not only about made et al offering juicy roles for diversity actors. and I say that as a non whet non PoC person.
I was tired of over hyped Halle and Oprah. Welcome talented new faces, yes!

  27. serena says:

Yeah Lupita looks good in everything. That dress is cute, not beautiful but at least it’s not a disaster like Stella usually do, but I hate the shoes.

  28. agentscully says:

Miss. The colour does nothing for her.

  29. Audrey says:

Lupita looks great, I hate Claire’s shoes! So painful looking and toe cleavage is UGLY.

  30. TheCountess says:

Lupita was destined to have a fashion slip-up eventually. Still, her misstep isn’t really that bad. The color doesn’t flatter her, and the fit seems off, yet she still looks good.

I must be the other person who likes Claire Danes’ dress 🙂

  31. littlestar says:

Lupita looks great, even though she is wearing a Stella McCartney dress. Completely agree that Sarah Paulson is a great character actress – I really hope she can go further in her career. She is awesome in American Horror Story. Clair Danes dress is hideous, it’s not her hair, it’s the dress, but I screamed a little from excitement when I saw the picture of her with her husband. Just over a month til the second season of Hannibal starts! Lol.

  32. Anna Scott says:

Lupita looks amazing. The dress is great on her, both color and style.

  33. Janet says:

Nyong’o has had so many fashion hits recently that she’s allowed one miss. That dress is just meh. It’s the color. That blah, indifferent color does nothing for her glorious skin tone.

  34. DianeP says:

Stella McC has knocked it out of the ugliness park again — the colour looks like puke and the top is a jigsaw puzzle piece looking for the rest of the puzzle. Lupita is very attractive, but that mess is not doing her any favours.

  35. rep says:

Dont know what happened when i tried to post this comment before, but i dont see it. Anyway, Meryl Streep talked about how private and mysterious Oscar legends were back in the day. That just seems like such a wonderful time. No way to appear mysterious these days.

  36. Chelle says:

I love the dress and the colour but I wish she had chosen another colour for her amazing skin tone. It just doesn’t do it justice. A little lighter or brighter would have been a better choice. She is stunning either way.

  37. Kate says:

It’s not the best dress for her but she’s always lovely and classy. Lupita for Oscar!

  38. shellybean says:

I don’t like any of these dresses.

  39. Psyren says:

Claire’s dress is horrible and her makeup is worse. Something about it looks cheap and kind of 80’s to me.

  40. Nicolette says:

Never a fan of Stella McCartney, but this dress looks amazing on Lupita. And I love the color. Gorgeous!

  41. Nene says:

That shade of brown is tricky on most people so Lupita should have worn the dress in another color. Lavender, purple, burnt orange or violet would have made for a better color option.
I love the short white dress with the flower details a lot.

She’s got an awesome body, lean,a little musculer and curvy- a sexy combination for a woman.
Lupita looks like a pear or a variation of it,leaner and musculer pear.
So fellow pears, this is how you work your body type,- as long as you are at a healthy weight- not A-line clothes all the times just to hide your butt and hips.
Playing up one’s best features is the only way to look and feel great at any time. Lupita is a excellent example.

  42. Nene says:

    …all the time*

  43. MyHiddles says:

Oh Lupita, please stay away from Stella McCartney! This one isn’t bad, but if you keep messing with her she will be dressing you in a potato sack, not that you couldn’t rock that too…

  44. K says:

I’m glad Danes has gone back to darker hair. It looks much healthier, and does not wash her out the way the blonde did. I wish she would go even darker, to an almost My So-Called Life shade.

  45. Morgan says:

What’s interesting is that the sideview pics with Leo are the first time I’ve noticed that Lupita has no boobs. Yay! My kind of girl. But she dresses in a way that doesn’t draw attention to the lack of them at all. Whereas Claire Danes has never seemed to be able to dress in a way that doesn’t showcase her lack of boobs, and has done it here again.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

You never noticed that before? You can tell that in the movie–plus she has worn very low cut gowns. That’s how she got away with it.

  46. Div says:

Leo looks so thirsty for Lupita in that pic…loving it. They’ve met before, so for him to be clutching on to her like that definitely comes across like thirst.

  47. Curious Cole says:

I actually found Dame Helen Mirren to be the night’s Style Star -she was amazing in Elie Saab! That’s okay, Lupita can’t knock our boots off every time, the pressure would be too great to outdo herself, and this way Helen got to sparkle. Literally.

  48. Allie says:

Lupitas dress is so tight. It looks like spanx from the side!

  49. Naddie says:

She’s so basic but still outstanding, she’s inteligent when choosing her clothers. Like the post says, she knows her body.

  50. Gorgonia says:

let just say it straight: Lupita is one of that women who look stunning with everything they wear, at least it’s what I saw until now …

  51. LaurieH says:

Lupita looks phenomenal. She understands precisely what looks good on her body and keeps everything simple. I wasn’t super keen on the teal dress with embellished neckline, but even THAT looked amazing on her.

  52. pls says:

This is not remotely a fashion mishap imo. People push their personal like and dislike as universal thing I liked the color and the simple style it works well on her. Why some people think only bright colors works for dark tone?

    • Barbie Doll says:

      ^^^ ^^^
      This! +10000
I love the color of this dress on her…She looks flawless and stunning!
It’s ridiculous to think that dark skinned people need to only wear bright colors and neon colored clothes all the time!

  53. lady mary. says:

i need Lupita cast as the next bondgirl,ASAP

  54. TG says:

Lupita has a flawless figure and skin and looks stunning in anything but that dress is fugly. That color and material looks like panty hose or some garment you would wear underneath your dress. The only reason you don’t notice how craptacular the dress is because it is Lupita wearing it and that is rare for anyone to be able to do. Look forward to seeing more of Lupita in years to come. I get a feeling she isn’t a fluke.

  55. rep says:

@observer, sorry just read your post. Meryl was talking to Jimmy Kimmel last wed, thur or fri. It was short, but interesting.

  56. Singtress says:

Her skin is so perfect, and her shape so perfect…I feel like she looks like a black Barbie. So flawless and perfect….

  57. taxi says:

Danes’ haircolor is better here but her dress looks like something she hauled out of granny’s costume closet. Very fug & the keyhole doesn’t help.

  58. Girldown says:

Lupita is stunning. I haven’t seen her in a gown that wasn’t perfection. Bitch. 🙂
