Miley Cyrus makes fun of Lady Gaga: clever or self-fulflling prophecy?

Miley Cyrus

Yes I realize that it is 2014, so the vast majority of us are tired of Miley Cyrus and her everpresent tongue. Except for MTV. This is MTV’s ad for Miley’s upcoming “Unplugged” appearance on Jan. 29, which I am not looking forward to by any stretch. Miley and her fake teeth are making fun of Lady Gaga’s recent rotten teeth grill. This could possibly be seen as an homage to Zuul if not for the precarious position in which Gaga finds herself today in the pop world.

Obviously Miley is being a smartass, which is not a smart move in an MTV promo. We all know that the opinion of MTV means nothing. They celebrated Miley’s 21st birthday with an entire Sunday’s worth of devoted programming. Clearly they do not realize that even Miley’s camp is worried about whether anyone will show up for the Bangerz tour. If you were on the fence on whether to buy tickets, Roberto Cavalli has been hired as the tour’s official costume designer. Still not attending? Well you can still see Cavalli’s designs for the tour costumes. I’m just happy Miley’s planning to wear clothing.

Miley is gearing up for the tour that starts on Valentine’s Day. Buh-bye, Liam. Here are Miley’s promises to her audience:

Yet the 21-year-old singer assures that those who attend will be entertained by what they see and hear. “I want people to walk away saying, ‘OK, she did some things that were crazy, but at the end of the day, it was really about her voice,'” she told reporters during a conference call.

Especially regarding the rising ticket prices that her younger fan base will pay, she reassured, “I just want to be something that is worth going to see … I already made the money that I need to make. This is about now putting the money into something that I care about.”

Here are eight things to expect from Cyrus’ North American Bangerz tour, which kicks off on Feb. 14 in Vancouver, BC:

1. Feast your eyes on a massive screen. “That’s something I’ve actually had to fight for a little bit,” she said, most inspired by the visuals on Madonna’s tours. “It isn’t the easiest thing to travel with in the space that we’re using, and in some of the cities, my screen is actually too large … each city is going to be the biggest that it can be, and the best that their arena will allow us to have. Everything will always feel big … some of the stuff we’re doing is so dope.” And rather than wowing with onstage stunts, Cyrus will only enter and exit on a spectacular prop, focusing on singing entirely live in between.

2. Look out for more of her four-legged friends. “Our whole tour is literally based on animals!” she said, noting that much of the content is especially sketched by Ren & Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi, including “imaginative animals he’s made on his own.” She recalled that the two recently became close over dinner, when he sketched the starstruck singer for two hours.

3. Expect more than confetti to fall from the sky. “I’m giving lots of junk away,” she teased, rather than offering a wide selection of tour merchandise. “This is my mom’s worst nightmare, because I always hoard things from when I go to concerts… all the kids always want to keep the confetti, but I want to give them real things to collect.”

4. Self-parodies will make appearances. “I don’t have a hard time making fun of myself, so the whole thing is making the way people perceive me and doing that even more, be the character myself,” she said of the 2013 throwbacks present in the set list. “That’s what I think I’ve been representing, more than anything, in the past year. Being fun and carefree, and that’s really what the show represents.” She did confirm, “We’re definitely bringing some kitties.

5. Less is still more for tour costumes. Each designer was given a different section to outfit Cyrus for, so look out for looks from Marc Jacobs, The Blonds and Jeremy Scott, as well as archive pieces from Bob Mackie. “Clothes for me, or lack thereof, say a lot,” she joked of her traveling costume closet.

6. The concert has no time limit. Though the show, directed by Diane Martel, has a set list that spans 90 minutes, Cyrus made sure to preserve the acoustic section of her previous tours. This part of the concert will be comprised of acoustic renditions of her hits as well as covers, and “can go for as long as I want,” depending on the city and the audience’s energy. Still she noted that most of her set list will root from her most recent album, with her previous hits only barely sprinkled in.

7. Special guests are guaranteed. “I have friends that worked on my album in all of these cities, so anytime I’m in the same city, I’m definitely gonna drag everybody out,” she said of Future, Mike Will Made It and other Bangerz collaborators.

8. Get ready for girl power. Opening acts Sky Ferreira and Icona Pop were strategically chosen, says Cyrus. “I think it’s hard for friends that are in their 20s to be friends with other girls. There’s a lot of competition, and what I love about her is we’ve never felt that way,” she said of Ferreira, adding: “Icona, they had a really good year, and I think they’re a band that people can look out to be rising even more.” She noted that she sees herself as a feminist and likes to fill her work environments with as many women as possible.

Oh boy. I wonder who Miley’s special guest in my city (Tulsa) will be? If she pulls Garth Brooks on stage, that might make new headlines. Or not. Poor Miley thinks people will buy tickets for her voice instead of the naked “Wrecking Ball.”

Here’s a photo from Miley’s recent shoot with Love magazine. I feel bad for Love. They did a pretty good shoot, and then the whole thing was ruined by a fake interview. Bummer.

looks like a portrait of her unfamous aunt, auntie cleetus.

    • Paige says:

these teeth are TOO CLOSE to what she actually had – so not a good joke for her …
I believe this tour will be the end of Larry Rudolph reputation, whatever is left of it.

  2. blue marie says:

Some of the costumes Cavalli designed are cute, that’s all I got cause she makes me so tired. Get off my damn lawn already!

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m no Gaga fan, but that strikes me as really unkind.

  4. Kiddo says:

Most of the article is same ol’, same ol’, but I do think it’s good that she is doing the unplugged thing to show her voice. I know some people hate her voice, but I do think she can sing. No one is expecting the depth of Nirvana, but at the same time, classically speaking, Kurt didn’t have a great voice, but he had raw emotion and excellent song writing skills. Miley may not have the writing chops, but she can sometimes pull off the raw factor, although obvs not to the same degree. But I can’t side-eye at least a minimal attempt to bring it back to music, versus the carnival show elements.

  5. Liv says:

I just saw a youtube video in which she sings “Jolene” – absolutely amazing! I will never understand why she changed so much and is on this trip – probably to get more attention. I feel sorry for her. Her new persona seems so fake. She might not be the person in the video either, but at least she made great music back then.

    • Eleonor says:

Out there there are tons of girls with a nice voice, or with a better voice, with more talent than her, and they don’t make it. Miley and her mediocre talent can thanks Disney and Larry Rudolph, because when she tried to have a music career with her clothes on she failed. Actually no one remember “can’t be tamed”.

      • nemo says:

uhhh, she didn’t have that much clothes on during the Can’t Be Tamed era.

      • alex says:

        Thank you.

      • Leila in wunderland says:

Yeah. She wore one-piece bathing suits as costumes during the can’t be tamed era and the cultural puritans even freaked out and got bigoted over that. They used to react that way over her red carpet dresses during that era too. No wonder why she went for this image- people used to get nasty and hateful over her showing just a little bit of skin. Now people would be grateful if she went back to that. Society really does bring people like Miley Cyrus on itself.

    • Dommy Dearest says:

Madilyn Bailey is a youtuber that does covers. SHE should be the one with a record deal, not Hillbilly No Ass.

  6. eliza says:

I am no GaGa fan but I cannot stand this hillbilly either.

    • ncmagnolia says:

Nor am I, but that spoof of GaGa is really a rotten thing for her to do. She could have chosen to be kind instead of going for a cheap bit.

  7. PoliteTia says:

Miley is rocking that hair color! And yes, Miley is ‘mean girl-ing’ Lady Ga Ga.
Miley is taking the entertainment industry by surprise. When Disney let’s a starlet go what R they to do? Miley will not be dismissed. Didn’t Lady Ga Ga ‘camp’ tell her to tone it down and let her music shine through? Did she listen? No! Now, Lady Ga Ga is known for wacky costumes.
Slow down Miley, this could happen to you.

  8. sarah says:

when I first saw this picture, I thought it WAS Gaga.

I just can’t find it in myself to hate Miley.

  9. Josephine says:

But will she actually sing at her concerts? Sounds like so many bells and whistles that it’s more like a stage show than a concert. And she forgot to list simulated sex – that seems like a big part of her routine. Remember when people actually sang?

    • hunter says:

Actually Miley is quite (justifiably) proud of her voice so yes she will be singing for realz.

      • Josephine says:

I don’t know. If you sing, I’m not sure you need so much of the rest – it takes away from actually hearing her voice. And I’m just seeing the great voice thing. To each their own, but to me her voice lacks clarity and depth, and she has been having a hard time holding notes. I think she’s fine as far as pop tarts go, but I think people have over-praised her voice in an attempt to deflect the criticism of the side show.

  10. Zigggy says:

I thought about going to the Beacher’s Madhouse opening in Vegas, where Miley was hosting, but it was $300 a head, or $3000 a table. Not worth it, thank you!

  11. QQ says:

This Chippy is in NO POSITION to make fun of anyone other than say, justin bieber… And really The teeth joke would have worked if not for the fact her real chompers before these chiclet veeners closely favored the fake teeth to begin with

    • hunter says:

I remember those – does that mean her teeth are still somehow like that underneath? Is that even possible? It can’t be good for you…

      • QQ says:

OMG Hunter Lemme tell you: THIS IS THE TYPE OF SHIT THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE AT NIGHT AFTER THOSE AGGRESSIVE MAKEOVER SHOWS!!… (Or after seeing a pic of miley or Hillary Duff)

  12. Size Does Matter says:

My 19 year old niece loves her. SMH.

Ironic for Miley to poke fun at Gaga when her stunts are the same level of attention-whorey and ridiculous, just different. And I don’t think Miley gets a pass because she’s younger.

  13. GeeMoney says:

Can’t stand Miley… but that pic of her pretending to be Gaga is hysterical.

Also, it’s nice to see her in a pic (the second or third one) where she actually has clothes on.

  14. Supreme says:

I’d love to know where the info comes from that promoters are worried nobody will turn up for her tour? They’re so worried they BID and won to pay her $500,000.00 per show lol

I remember before the singles even came out there was talk of “Is anybody even here to buy Mileys singles, Parents won’t do that”… and then “We can’t stop” and “Wrecking ball” both sold over 3,000,000 copies each in the US alone and then it was “is the album going to sell” and now it’s already sold almost 1,500,000 ww which is almost as many as Gagas and only about 600k less than Katy perry. I don’t think there will be a problem at all with the tour, People may not like Miley or how she acts / sings / dresses but lets not keep getting carried away….

  15. RobN says:

I like performers who seem intent on showing people a good time at concerts. Way too many have the I’m doing you a favor by even showing up attitude, and while I’m too old for Miley’s schtick, it sounds like it’ll be fun.

    • Willa says:

I don’t care for Miley’s music, but I’m with ya on that one, it does sound like it would be fun for her fans.

  16. jammypants says:

didn’t she used to idolise Gaga?

  17. Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeast says:

I think it’s pretty tasteless to put somebody down as a means to elevate yourself, but if she is going to make a joke she better at least commit to it. Those teeth are too close to reality and she should’ve picked something more recognizable. If I just saw this ad at a bus stop or something, I would have no idea what she was trying to do – aside from look like an idiot.

  18. Marty says:

Eh, if she wanted people to focus on her voice then that is the angle she should have played from the beggining. I just see her as a stunt queen now.

  19. GirlyGirl says:

Can we put here and Justin Bieber on to an Ice floe and set them adrift?

  20. Dommy Dearest says:

    -just leaves this here-

  21. St says:

Miley is basically new Lady Gaga. She thinks that she must look crazy or scandal or idiotic in her every appearance. Anywhere. Because otherwise she thinks that people and media will be not interested in her…

I mean look at those two pictures. Look at all her recent performances on stage. She always tried to wear something “look at me, I look idiotic, print some story about me”…

  22. Um, is no-one else seeing Corey Haim in that Love magazine photo? Which I find disturbing, not least cos I had his posters all over my walls in the early 90s!

  23. emma says:

I don’t see this as her making fun of Gaga, more her making fun of her “hillbilly” ways. DESTINY CYRUS
