Bruno Mars’ SuperBowl Halftime show: one of the best halftime shows ever?

wenn21043437

I don’t really understand why people are so critical of Bruno Mars. Granted, I’m not a Mars Superfan or anything, but from seeing his music videos, listening to his music on the radio and seeing him perform live on several awards shows and such, he seems like an incredibly talented dude and an excellent live act. Does he want to be the next Michael Jackson? Perhaps. But Bruno’s got oodles of talent, and I was pleasantly surprised when he was chosen to be this year’s SuperBowl Halftime act.

Bruno performed a medley of his biggest hits (“Treasure,” “Runaway Baby,” and “Locked Out of Heaven” were included), then brought Red Hot Chili Peppers in for “Give It Away”). Of course Anthony Kiedis was shirtless. I don’t think he owns any shirts. But Kiedis’ voice is holding up, I think, and it sounded good. Apparently, it was Bruno’s idea to include the RHCP too, which I think is kind of awesome. Here’s the show:

People are already saying that this is one of the best halftime shows in recent memory. This also happened to be the 10-year-anniversary of Nipplegate, the Halftime show where Justin Timberlake ripped off Janet Jackson’s bra thing and exposed her FLESH. After that incident, the halftime shows definitely seemed to skew “older” – and by that I mean that older (male) rock stars were the halftime acts for the most part. So, it was nice seeing someone young and “hip” do the halftime show. Now here’s the controversial question: was Bruno Mars better than Beyonce’s halftime show last year? HA!

I would not know if it was because I watched the Zombie Bowl on amc instead gearing up for next week’s return of The Walking Dead.

    • Delta Juliet says:

      can.not.wait!!!!!

    • Chloe says:

I can’t wait until next Sunday, I’m a huge Walking Dead fan, I spent most of yesterday watching the marathon.

    • FLORC says:

I’m so excited for walking dead to come back!
However, the halftime show was truly awesome. Considering I had money on Denver and am not a bruno superfan the show really was great. Drum solo opening, stage set up, not cluttered with back up dancers, but kept it simple.

Easily THE best Halftime show in my lifetime so far.

      • Esmom says:

Not mention a powerful little horn section. Loved to see them hopping around during the RHCP song.

      • the Original Tiffany says:

        Nope. Still Prince.

Anyway, most of it was a lip sync fest. They ALL do it for this kind of stuff. 🙁 Long gone the days where the RHCP played live with socks on their co*ks.

      • Kate says:

yes Your Royal Badness is one of the best.

      • gg says:

I was just saying to someone the other day that nobody could beat Prince. Not to mention, his crotch was centerframe with the camera closeup by his feet. High def Prince bulge. lol

But the RHCP were very disappointing. Anthony sounded really bored and I don’t blame him because that song is way too played out. They definitely picked the wrong RHCP song to do. And Ant phoned it in. They’re not even a rap band. They have 1 rap song and it probably should be shelved at this point as it’s gotten very stale.

    • jessica says:

I watched the Zombie Bowl too!! lol

      • Amber says:

Me too. I just started watching The Walking Dead. They did a marathon leading up to this season, so I’d only seen the previous one. (I think it started when they found the prison.) I can’t believe how great the first season was. I went to get something to drink and I saw the score when it was like 29-0. I didn’t watch a minute of the game and I have no regrets 😀 You’re able to see any commercials or any half-time show whenever you like anyhow.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Bruno Mars is channeling James Brown and he is awesome!

    • wheezy says:

BEST HALFTIME SHOW EVER! WAY better than beyonce! His talent is enjoyable on many levels, appropriate for all ages and tastes, I was so excited they had him perform! So sad his tour doesn’t come to my area 🙁

      • floretta50 says:

That it’s appropriate. At the least somebody is listening to the little people. it was refreshing, back to decency, the last thing families watching the Super Bowl needed was a flasher! Is performance was outstanding, wish we could see more like it but i don’t think so it is hard for some people to go back to that kind of entertainment, the media have let some performers go too far and now some people are thirsty for even more nudity and pretend sex in live performance.

    • idk says:

I thought it was the best half-time show I’ve personally ever seen. I liked the fact that there weren’t any half naked women dancing behind him. He’s so talented and he kept it pretty classy so kids could watch.

      • SnarkySnarkers says:

My thoughts exactly. Hes super talented and the RHCP were pretty good too. I love that there was no half naked woman parading around (and calling it feminism). That opening was killer with those drums. Plus, hes adorable.

      • Delilah says:

Amen. I am still traumatized by Beyonce’s over the top girating. My mouth was agape thinking at any moment I would be in full view of her va ja ja. And I pitied Madonna fearing she was in danger of breaking a hip. Sorry for professing my disappointment first, but juxtaposed against Bruno’s performance, the show was an unequivocal improvement. I liked that I did not have to be at the edge of my seat, fearing some debaucle. Didn’t tune on for JT and Janet’s boob moment, but remember the coverage. Case and point, I was happy as a viewer to be afforded the luxury this year to simply lean back and enjoy the show. Thank you Bruno!!! I knew he’d bring it after his impressive performance on SNL. Boy’s got talent!!!

      • Delilah says:

      • yoyo says:

I am blown away by all these comments about how this was so family friendly. Double standards much?

The guy sings “your sex takes me to paradise” -that’s something you want your kids to be singing? really? Yeah the tune is real catchy and he’s an amazing singer, song writer and apparently drummer too but come on!

Did you guys also miss the choreographed groin pumping action during the breakdown of the song?

And yeah of course he wasn’t preaning around in g-string because apparently it is not required for male pop stars to dress like sluts they can get away with just being amazing singers and entertainers as opposed to women apparently for whom it’s just not enough, slut wear compulsory.

Don’t get me wrong his show was super entertaining but let’s not pretend it was all so family friendly.

Yeah, double standards all right – sigh.

      • Esmom says:

@yoyo, I hear you. Little kids singing along to that song — I’ve witnessed it — is indeed cringeworthy. And the beginning of the RHCP song is pretty pornographic, I was glad my teens aren’t familiar enough with that song to know what the lyrics say.

      • idk says:

        @Yo Yo

I think his performance was the MOST family friendly of all the half-time shows that I have PERSONALLY seen. I have not watched every single half-time show in history. I just said from performances I’ve seen, his was the least offensive. If he had half-naked women dancing behind him, my opinion would have been different. Yes, our society is unfair like that…men can walk around without shirts on but women can’t. That is a whole different issue and requires a huge debate. I’d still rather have kids watch Bruno than watch Miley. If R. Kelly was up on stage dry humping some lady I’d have a problem with that too.

    • MCraw says:

When he busted out those moves we all got hyped! His was definitely the best half time show in a long, long time. Sorry Yoncé!

      • Wilz says:

        Thank you, yoyo!

So the RHCP can go out there shirtless and all’s fine but a fully-clothed Beyonce is too much just because she’s shaking her hips?

    • Sassy says:

Also Prince. So nice to see real talent for a change. He has been entertaining since he was a little kid. Love Bruno Mars!

  3. Sixer says:

Why don’t people like him? My kids love him – but they are uncritical little beings, unlike their shady mother.

    • V4Real says:

I love my little Filipino /Puerto Rican Bruno Mars. I think he has more talent than a lot of artist out today. His show was definetely better than that mess Bey put together last year.

On a different note I am proud to say that the kids in the band “The Marching Cobras “from my job got to play at the SuperBowl before the game. The kids are in residential care and considered at risk youths.

    • Erinn says:

I don’t like him. I find his songs freaking annoying – that grenade one in particular. But I do recognize he’s a talented guy, and I will never attempt to deny that he’s talented. There’s a lot worse on the radio. I like his voice, just not his songs.

      • Migdalia says:

Me either! He sings like the biggest stage five clinger ever. Locked out of Heaven is probably his only song I like. Sorry Beyonce kept my attention way longer last year. Queen B wins.

      • Esmom says:

I can deal with Grenade, it’s the “Gorilla” one that makes me irrationally rage-y. Agree that his voice is impressive and I thought he had some cute moves onstage.

      • V4Real says:

Queen B didn’t really sing though did she; just stomped around on stage.

      • Migdalia says:

@v4real but I don’t watch Beyonce for singing. She gives impressive shows with her dancing, fierceness and sensual moves. Honestly, she does too much when she starts yodeling…too much mouth and exaggeration. I just like way more of her songs than Bruno Mars’.

  4. Jericho says:

I definitely enjoyed Bruno’s show more than Beyonce’s. His seemed more about putting on a good show whereas hers was more about look-at-me. I was bummed that he only performed, esentially, three songs and Beyonce did eight-odd ones.

But about that bloodbath of a game….

    • emmie_a says:

I agree. Bruno put on a show, Beyonce just wanted attention.

Now I’m not sure Bruno was better than Keyboard Cat, who played during the Puppy Bowl halftime show…

    • Dingo says:

Yes Beyonce did like 8 songs – but she was mostly dancing – she almost didn’t sing. He did, very well.

    • L says:

To be fair, we were trying to come up with ideas of what other songs he has that would be approved by a prime time audience. Not gorillas or young girls-today I don’t feel like doing anything? (not really a halftime song)

    • janie says:

I loved the halftime show! One of the best in the last couple of years! I didn’t realize what an entertainer he is.

    • Aims says:

It was a blood bath. I’m so proud of my Seahawks. I was screaming like an idiot I was so excited.

      • Daphne says:

Me too, My daughter told me “Sit Down, “You look like Ramsey from the Bud Light commercials.” Ravens fan who’s happy for the ‘Hawks.

Loved Bruno, I was hoping he would have revived some old school SOUL bands that get sampled so much by today’s artist instead of the RHCP. But I understood the politics behind it.

      • V4Real says:

Both teams that played in the super bowl came from the two states were weed is completely legal.

    • kimbers says:

      Have to agree

Beyonce was just one big diva moment, while bruno was being an artist. His performance was just FUN to watch, while hers was…sigh ya that’s beyond wah wah. The media pumped hers up more then they should have bc it’s beyonce.
      love the chilli peppers too!

      • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Exactly kimbers and emmie; and madge’s show the year before, lip synching and all, was mostly just fame whoring with pre-recorded music; Bruno and the chili’s – I”ve seen the chilli’s several times and it’s just four guys on a stage rocking out – were about having fun and performing, and I’m sure you’ve read that Bruno invited the chilli’s to perform with him – something beyawnce would never do.

    • Lucinda says:

It was wonderful. The focus was mostly on his singing, which was live as far as I could tell. He has great showmanship and he looked like he was having a blast. Proves you don’t need crazy choreography and fireworks to put on a great show. One of the best in years!

      • Jericho says:

Spot on about his showmanship! I’ll admit I’m not the biggest fan of his radio songs, but I turned to my friends during the performance and said “Okay, now I HAVE to go to one of his shows. “

    • Aly says:

Bruno entertained AND he is a killer live singer. He’s just a better overall performer.

Beyoncé shakes her ass and dances fast but she isn’t a great live singer when she’s dancing like that. Concerts to her are more about what you SEE, and not what you HEAR. It’s all spectacle.

Bruno wins this one. Big time.

    • jm says:

His show was way more singing heavy where Beyonce danced most of the time and sang for like two minutes total. She went through more songs because she sang like two lines from each one. Plus, when she brought Destiny’s child on it was like they were just there to be her backup where as when RHCP came on Bruno backed up and let them do their thing (but not before singing for a little with Kiedes with the biggest smile on his face – so yea it was probably his idea), SO much better.

  5. Nicole says:

Brunos was better!! And I dont even like his music but it was awesome

  6. Kiddo says:

YES! I wasn’t a fan before, but he brought it. He even made the transition into RHCP seamless.

    • Erinn says:

We don’t have cable atm because grumpy fiance claims Canadian netflix is perfectly fine. I wanted to watch the show JUST for RHCP because I love them.

  7. Jessica says:

I don’t like Bruno Mars or any of his music.

    • Renee says:

Yeah, I’m not trying to hate but I don’t get the hype for this guy. Now, I will give him that he brings the energy when he performs but it seems that his performances are all second-rate Michael Jackson shtick and his songs all sound like things that came out before. Why do we keep on going crazy for artists and their mimicry and act like they are doing something new? I am also looking at you, Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke.

      • Lucinda says:

I admit, I don’t get this criticism. His music shows a great deal of variety and depth. He can do something reminiscent of Sting in the 80’s, then switch to a ballad, then go to something more R & B, then flip to reggae. The guy has tremendous range. I grew up on MJ and never once thought of him watching Bruno Mars. I really thought more of something from the 50’s with his stylized pompadour, slick suit, back-up singers and smooth feet.

      • Kiddo says:

I don’t see the MJ thing either, other than that Bruno is an incredibly dynamic act, based on talent and energy, as was MJ.

      • V4Real says:

Yeah I think someone just pulled that MJ comparison right out of the air. Bruno Mars performaces doesn’t mimick MJ’s in no way, shape or form.

      • mar says:

I do not see any MJ wannabe going on here. I see a very unique and talented singer who has a few moves. Im not very into his music but he does his own thing. He is way more talented then Robin.

      • jane16 says:

I agree with Renee. I agree he’s talented, but I’m tired of modern pop music. It all sounds the same to me, so digital-ish. Also, I’m not crazy about his voice. I watched the first song, then went out to the store to pick up stuff my hostess needed. Most of the adults at the party we were at talked and joked around during the halftime show and the teens & young people that were there also didn’t watch it. They were outside hanging out.

      • Audrey says:

Agreed. He regurgitates, he doesn’t bring anything new to the table.

  8. Newbie says:

I enjoyed his performance and Yes it was better than Beyonce’s halftime show.

  9. LadyMTL says:

I’m not a huge fan either, but I did like his show. It was very high energy and entertaining, though I found that including the RHCP was a bit of a strange choice. Still, I thought it was a very good spectacle, even with the 437 fireworks, lol.

    • Esmom says:

I was thinking about the RHCP and wondered how they felt being second fiddle when they were once pretty big. As for the choice, I thought it was a calculated move based on the audience demographic but maybe it really was Bruno’s idea.

  10. BRE says:

I loved Bruno last night! Really, the amount of time they get to perform is so small that I think it is hard to put on a good show. And Anthony Kiedis, wow, I was impressed he still had a decent looking body at 51!!!!

  11. Luca26 says:

I don’t love all of his songs but that show was awesome. It was the best halftime show I can remember but I felt really old as I wondered if Anthony Kedis was wearing a wig.

    • Esmom says:

Lol. I thought his ‘do was oddly finished-looking compared to his grungy attire but thought it was because of a ton of product and a flatiron. But now that you mention it I think it totally could have been a wig!

  12. feebee says:

When he finished his set I thought, “oh c’mon, give us one more”. After Bey’s last year, it was more like, “ok, that’s done, back to the game”. So for me it was better… fresher than last year’s. He delivered energy and fun and I didn’t know he could play the drums too.

  13. blue marie says:

I enjoyed both Beyonce and Bruno Mars’ halftime show, they were both good. With Bey I kinda of just watched while with Bruno I did dance a bit.

What I dislike though is that both Flea and Kiedis can show some nipple (4x’s the nipple) and get nothin. No hate, no flack, nothin.. (at least they wore more than the sock though, so I should probably quit complaining)

    • V4Real says:

@Blue I was about to say something similar. Female entertainers constantly get the you’re over 50 put some clothes on (Madonna); yet nothing was said about a 51 year old man jumping around on stage with his shirt off and dressed the same way he dressed when he was in his 20’s. Oh the double standards we embrace.

      • Lemon says:

Let’s be fair – in their 20s, Anthony and Flea would have just worn socks! So even shirtless is dressing in a more age-appropriate manner.

      • Boxy Lady says:

I’ve seen the Chilis in concert and they are often shirtless. If you hire the Chili Peppers, shirtless (or back in the day, a mere tube sock) is what you get. You just know that from the beginning.

    • Pumpkin Pie says:

I have nothing against you, but I would argue that it’s not the same thing. Girls and women are far more sexualized than men, and there is much more sexual violence against girls and women than there is against men. Girls and women are far more vulnerable then men when it comes to this. It’s not about double standards. The janet jackson nipple thing – totally in purpose imo. I am not a prude, but I don’t agree with women showing their nipples and parts of the even much more intimate areas (yes, the down there) as part of a public entertainment act, should it be a live show or a music video and such. They can do it in their own privacy or in men’s magazine. I am super serious about that. It’s too bad there are women who don’t see how their actions might reflect upon other women. It can lead to nasty episodes and yes I am speaking from experience. (I think I am overreacting but I am upset when i think about how sexualized and objectified girls and women are in comparison with men and young men
__ this was a reply to blue marie

      • blue marie says:

But Pumpkin, it is the same thing. Janet AND Justin showed her nipple on purpose (but had the media not blown it up most folks would have missed it) just like RHCP came out on stage shirtless, purposely showing the nipps.

You’re a bit contradictory though, right? You don’t think women should show their “parts” in live acts or videos but it’s totally okay for men’s magazines? Umm, what? A part, is a part no matter where it’s shown. Stop me if I’m wrong, but this comes across as it’s a woman’s fault if they are assaulted? Like they should always be covered up? Do you really believe that that would stop a rapist? You speak from experience, do you really believe it was your fault?

      • V4Real says:

You’re so spot on Marie, I was thinking what you said but wasn’t in the mood to debate. No matter how you dress it up it’s still a double standard. Plus the commenters post does come across as if she is saying a woman is asking for it if she chooses to dress a certain way.

      • Pumpkin Pie says:

        Blue marie
Had I actually suffered from sexual violence, I would find your words very hurtful.

      • queenfreddiemercury says:

Pumpkin Pie, I am a victim of sexual abuse (as a kid) and I don’t get your point at all sorry. I agree with Blue Marie 100%.

ETA: I’m sorry you suffered sexual abuse. I hope and wish the best for you.

    • Lucinda says:

Yes, they should have had shirts on.

  14. Lark says:

I love my little pocket prince. He puts on an excellent show and he’s a talented musician, but I wish he would work on his lyrics—some of them are on Taylor Swift territory to me.

  15. Kali says:

Fantastic show, fantastic performer, absolutely killed it!

  16. Apples says:

I think Bruno is great with all his different musical era references. My parents were blown away by him and thought he was “adorable” and my dad thought he was ” a cool, hot shit that gave the best Super Bowl show he had seen.” !!!

  17. Nev says:

Kiedis is smoking hot. Forever YUM.

Madonna was the best ever. Bruno did a great job though. I enjoyed it.

  18. judyjudy says:

I love Bruno Mars. And yes, def better than Beyonce.

  19. Lila says:

I thought his show was awesome! I think he catches some flack for seeming old fashioned with his dance and stage setups. I have on occasion shared that sentiment but his style looked awesome on the stage. And he sounded amazing. I think I was more impressed with that than everything else combined. What I think was so engaging about the show was how much energy he had. Man has enough energy and charisma to set off those 800 fireworks all on his own.

I don’t see any real reason to compare his to Beyoncé’s. She rocked it last year, he rocked it this year. He also had the advantage of a lot fewer expectations. The buildup to Beyoncé’s show was insane. I barely remember reading much about Bruno’s.

  20. Gine says:

He was really good! (And actually sung live, it seemed?) The Chili Peppers were…at least not on for very long. I don’t mind them, in general, but they sounded awful.

  21. Delta Juliet says:

I kind of liked him. He has some catchy songs and seems like a good guy. Then I saw him dance in the halftime show and I now consider myself a fan. I love a man who can dance 🙂

I thought it was a great halftime show!

  22. AlmondJoy says:

I LOVED the halftime show! He’s so adorable and talented and he and his band seem to really have fun together. I also thought the guys in h is band were HOT, so that helped me enjoy the show even more.

Commercials this year were pretty lame though.. I saw a few that were funny and I loved the return of the Full House guys and Seinfeld, but other than that I was bored to tears. Ate a ton of bad food though :-/ time for a detox!

  23. BendyWindy says:

I thought it was a good show, one of the better ones in recent memory. Not the greatest ever, but way, way, way ahead of Beyonce and the Black Eyed Peas. Ugh. Just thinking about BEP’s half time makes me angry.

    • Esmom says:

Haha, my kids and I were talking about the BEP’s show, too. My husband said he read somewhere that it was ranked as one of the worst Superbowl performances ever. I thought Madonna’s was worse myself.

  24. heidi says:

    Count me out

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Me, too. I was bored stiff.

      • Tswise says:

        Same here.

They just need to hand this particular gig over to Bruce Springsteen, and let him do it until he physically can’t anymore. He is apparently the only one left who can/will sing live, knows how to work a bowl audience that size and who doesn’t insist on bursting ear drums with shrill noise or accosting our eyes with naked people.

  25. Jayna says:

    U2 was the best ever.

    • V4Real says:

uggg! You could fall asleep at a U2 show.

      • Jayna says:

Did you see their halftime show? It was after 911 and was emotional and amazing.

      • V4Real says:

Yes I have seen all the haftime shows for quite some time now being that I am a fan of Football. However I was just stating my opinion that I find U2 concerts and performances quite boring.

    • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Most polls I’ve read rate U2 and Prince’s amazing performance in the rain as the best with Springsteen up there – Beyoncé’s show was in the middle and the Black Eyed Peas were rated the worst – the BEP’s showed that they are only a studio act with their awful attempt at a live performance, and I’ve seen them live and they are bad without all the gimmicks and lip synching.

      • Shannon1972 says:

Totally agree with U2 and Prince – two of my favorite half times ever!! I am a massive U2 fan (seen them a zillion times), and Prince was total childhood nostalgia for me. Too bad he’s such a douche. I’m a Jersey girl, so of course I loved Bruuuuuuuuuuce. Since it was in Jersey this year, have to say I was very surprised that they didn’t call Bruce, or at least Billy Joel for half time. Huh.

Anyhow, I thought this half time was much more enjoyable than last year, but like others have said, there was much less hype so I wasn’t looking for the best half time performance *ever*. I was very pleasantly surprised! Bruno has a new fan in me.

  26. Jennifer12 says:

He is amazing and truly talented and that’s coming from a punk fan.

  27. Jayna says:

It’s a travesty that Depeche Mode hasn’t been the Halftime show, the greatest electronica band of all time, cited as influences to so many bands, still playing in stadiums.

Start out with Wrong, move into Policy of Truth (Although I prefer Halo), move into I Feel You, Personal Jesus, Enjoy the Silence, end with Never Let Me Down. It would be amazing. The ending with all hands in the air waving is like a religious experience. That would be epic for the Superbowl.

Hands in the air for last bit of Never Let Me Down –

    • snark says:

THIS^^^^^^^^ is my fantasy. That said, Bruno always seems to bring his A-game to his performances, and last night was no different– he’s a fantastic entertainer!

    • Shannon1972 says:

      That. Would. Be. SO. EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I nominate you to the Super Bowl halftime show committee for next year! Make it happen, Jayna! 😀

  28. Kaylah says:

I enjoyed his performance, I expected to be bored stiff but I moved my head like twice so that’s good.
Beyonce’s half time show was super entertaining, I got up and did the moves with her & I sang Halo like Jesus was coming & that was my pass to heaven. Bruno had the advantage of nobody expecting much from him. I remember there were like an average of 15 Beyonce stories on every site about the Superbowl so that’s that as well.

  29. MaryBeth says:

    It was FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!

  30. Tx says:

HE KILLED IT!! I think he is so terribly underrated overall. He always puts on a great show and sings live and so well!

  31. Nicolette says:

I absolutely LOVED it! Bruno sounded great, and so did Chili Peppers. It most surely was the best half time show in a long time. It was fantastic not to have Beyonce doing her same tired ass dance moves. Had no interest in the game at all, and I wasn’t even aware of who was scheduled to perform. But I was pleasantly surprised when I heard the music start. Loved it!

  32. Catriona says:

The absolute BEST Superbowl Performance, IMHO. I think Bruno Mars never disappoints with his performances because he always brings his game with no ego and his performances always look so effortless and uncontrived. 🙂

  33. SonjaMarmeladova says:

For the life of me, I can’t understand why there is a huge concert in a middle of a SPORTS event, but I’m glad I saw RHCP.

  34. Jen34 says:

The half time show was awesome. I’m sure he made some new fans. I was a big RHCP fan in the 90’s and it was great to see them.

As another person mentioned, the commercials were bad. The only one I liked was the Cheerios one. Oh, and the Tebow commercials were clever.

    • Esmom says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I actually found Tebow kind of hot.

      • bravocueen says:

LOVED the Tebow commercials. I thought most of the others were rather lame but Tebow might just be on to something with this self-depracating acting thing. . .

      • Shannon1972 says:

I liked the Tebow commercials too, but I also really chuckled at the Radio Shack commercial with all the 80’s icons running around. That was funny.

  35. EM says:

Bruno is a great performer and put on a terrific show! It’s really nice that they invited local NJ High School teams to participate in the crowd. Our town sent the Marching Band as did a few others – great memories for all.

  36. Tig says:

Ooh, I love a good horn section, big, small or anything in between! I thought his show was great. And as for the game- know the Seahawks fans enjoyed it, as they should, but they were the only ones!

  37. Boodiba says:

Really? If that’s the case I’m glad I’ve never seen any of them before! I was NOT impressed by Bruno. Oh sure he’s ok but it was so Vegas. I thought the RHCP were pathetic. LOL. I was only there to take in 1/2 the game with a friend who likes football.

  38. woodstock_schulz says:

Bruno Mars was awesome, the only problem was that his set was too short! He only sang 3 songs plus the RHCP one. I thought it was odd that the RHCP were included, I wanted more Bruno! LOL

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Yup agree with you. He was great, but RHCP? whatever.

    • Blannie says:

I agree – one of the few times I felt like the half-time show was too short. More Bruno please!! He was channeling James Brown and I loved every minute of it. He’s a very talented guy.

    • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Bruno invited the chilli’s there were stories about in my local paper.

    • Zadie says:

You meen less Bruno more RHCP? Who cares about Bruno Mars when there are rock legends on stage,

  39. vv007 says:

Beyonce sucked last year. Sorry but that was not a performance that was a ‘let me masturbate my ego IN YOUR FACE!’ at one point when she was on her knees I just gave up. Whatever admiration I had for her as a performer died that day.

I like Bruno as a performer and he more than made up for the most boring Superbowl game in recent memory.

    • bravocueen says:

Agreed. Her performance was definitely all about her, not entertaining the little people.

    • Nerd Alert says:

I’m with you. I’m so sick of her and her ego. A huge ego will ruin a lot of things, and a live performance is on that list.

I’m not a superfan of either artist, but I do have a few songs from each for working out to. Bruno delivered a performance, IMO, and Beyonce delivered a pony show, wherein she was the only pony.

  40. Kiki says:

I was introduced to this guy’s music when my boyfriend showed on youtube a video of the best proposal ever and then I asked: “Who sings”? And he said… “I don’t know. Let’s find out”. I think this was two years ago. I am a fan and last night, I watched the first half time of the game (we don’t really understand / like American football) and he didn’t disappoint us. You know why? His performance was fresh, fun and CLEAN. Can we have clean fun like this every year?

  41. jlee says:

I was never really a fan until I saw him perform Valerie as part of an Amy Winehouse tribute. He has some serious stage presence. Also I love his mouth. It’s pretty.

  42. Penelope says:

Love Bruno, love his music & showmanship, JUST LOVE HIM!

And yes, he was better than Beyonce IMO.

  43. Valerie says:

It was amazing and definitely one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows ever (I’d say top three are Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Bruno Mars, although not necessarily in that order). Such a talented musician and a true showman. From the drum solo start to the dance moves to his band and then finally that voice… he killed it. Glad to see him finally getting some of the praise and attention that he deserves. Oh, and Bruno > Beyonce by a long shot.

  44. Sarah says:

Bruno killed it. Simply killed it. Far better than Beyonce and far better than GrannyMadonna. Best half time show since Springsteen, IMO.

  45. Aly says:

Bruno Mars was absolutely better than Beyoncé last year. Just my opinion, but I was much more entertained by him and TRHCP.

  46. Diana says:

Yes. Bruno is the real deal when it comes to a great performer, singer and musician. He is always great live and his songs are really good. Glad to see him doing awsome.

  47. maria says:

This is the first halftime show my old foggy dad didn’t hate. He actually liked it. I am so happy for bruno mars getting some good exposure over the show

  48. Grant says:

    I liked Bey better!

  49. BreeinSEA says:

I loved it! But watching my favorite team win was the best!

  50. Listerino says:

i thought it was awesome and the best halftime show I’ve seen.
Blew Madonna and Beyonce’s out of the water.

  51. Miss M says:

Bruno Mars, no doubt! Best half-time ever!

  52. Nick says:

I thought he did a good job, he kept me entertained throughout. I will say I’m tired of artists (eg JT, Robin Thicke) copying what artists of the past have done. His dance moves were so James Brown influenced that for amateur performer I wouldn’t mind but for someone of his status it makes the show a bit disappointing.

Also I liked Beyoncé’s show last year too. No need to pit a competition between the two.

  53. Lucky Charm says:

Yes, I think it was one of the best half-time shows. Bruno Mars was DEFINITELY better than Beyonce. And congratulations to the Seahawks on their first Super Bowl win. Great game, Seattle!

  54. seven says:

From an entertainment perspective, bey did it up better. Bruno is the better singer though some of his songs are hit and miss for me like grenade.

  55. knuckles says:

Bruno was a lot better than Bey. I always thought Bey’s Super Bowl performance was overrated. I also feel like a lot of things she does now are overrated.

  56. Lucky Charm says:

I think this was one of the best half-time shows. Bruno Mars was DEFINITELY better than Beyonce. And congratulations to the Seahawks on their first Super Bowl win. Great game, Seattle!

  57. Tswise says:

It was snooze-fest, is what it was. Completely forgettable.

  58. Thatchick says:

Best and most enjoyable since Prince. He didn’t need all the special effects and he didn’t have to be overtly sexual. It was nice to see someone actually get up there and sing live, play instruments, dance, and put on a show that my little nieces and my grandfather could enjoy. I also liked, that unlike last years performer, it was not all about him. I loved the tribute to the troops.

I found Beyonce’s show egotistical and trashy last year.

  59. Nina says:

Didn’t watch, not a fan of his music in particular, but I do have loads of respect for him and agree that he’s super talented.

  60. L. says:

I am not a big Bruno fan, though he is talented. I don’t care for his songs and was actually surfing the web until the chilie peppers can on. They brought the energy ..really. It’s sad when you have to rely on the old guys to bring the energy!

I personally enjoyed Beyonce’s show last year better. Nothing like some good booty shaken to get the crowd going! Including the kids! Lol some people are so threatened by stuff the can’t do. Or don’t look like. B is a great performer and she dances sings her ass off. Why critize that.

    • Whatwhatnot says:

Beyonce sang with a vocal backing track, which is fine, but Bruno did NOT and he sounded incredible.

If you were surfing the web then you missed Bruno breaking it down like James Brown, split and all lol. Beyonce also didn’t get up there and perform a drum solo like Bruno did.

Not taking away from Beyonce’s talent, just saying Bruno’s performance was more raw and organic. IMO it was better than last years show.

      • Thatchick says:

When Beyonce tries to do an organic stripped down performance without the smoke and mirrors, you end up with that mess she did at the Grammys. And even at the Grammys she was still lip syncing and relying on hypersexuality. She needs a ton of special effects to put on a decent show.

      • Dimebox says:

He was fabulous, and when he pulled out that great footwork and split I cheered!

  61. pleaseicu says:

I enjoyed it. I liked that he made it about the music. It was definitely more attention-getting and entertaining than the actual game was IMO.

  62. Palermo says:

Loved it, real old school talent, singing, playing instruments, dance routines. He and his band were fabulous.

  63. Alana says:

I’m not particularly the biggest fan of either, but I call sexist bullshit. They both performed well, so I don’t know why Bruno’s general public media feedback is so much more positive.

  64. CJ Berk says:

Everyone loves Bruno Mars…he’s soo talented. loved him before this and love him more every time I see him or hear him. What a pleasure not to have to watch Beyonce writhing around yet again. Really tired of her -she just has no respect for herself -trying too hard -give it a rest.

  65. Megan says:

Best halftime show since Janet and nipple gate! I loved it, Mars showed actual musical talent and the Chili Peppers were amazing.

    Killed It!!!

  66. JME says:

My Bruno slayed! He has the sickest band, and one of the few artist who sound better live.

  67. CeltLady says:

    Best ever. Period.
Turned my husband into a fan.
    Go Bruno.

  68. Sachi says:

Great halftime show! Bruno is a classic entertainer. He also sang live which was very impressive. I was screaming when he did his little dance break. Awesome! He has great energy onstage.

My favourite is still the Seahawks winning. I’m not that familiar with the NFL but I saw the Seahawks game vs. the 49ers early in the season and I called it right away that the Seahawks would be going to the Super Bowl and would win. Their team just looked consistent and cohesive. Everyone was fighting for the team and it’s that dynamic, that players give their best because everyone else in the team is giving their all, is sometimes more important than actual skills. I’ more familiar with football (soccer) and there have been a lot of teams that lost because of fighting within the team.

  69. MyHiddles says:

I only vaguely know who this kid is, but that show was the best i can remember in forever.

  70. M.A.F. says:

Some may have stated this but I’m going to say it anyhow- it needed more Pepper. I liked what Mars did but when one is promised Anthony I better get my eye share of that man.

  71. TOPgirl says:

Bruno was great yesterday! One of the BEST performances I’ve seen in a long time. He was real and his performance was clean.

  72. Isa says:

I loved his performance. I think he is adorable and really talented. He brought great energy to the stage without switching through a hundred songs and making everything seem hectic. I’m always impressed at how similar he sounds to his recorded music.

  73. jen says:

My man did not disappoint! I’ve seen him numerous times in concert and he ALWAYS delivers. Not to mention he’s incredibly nice (i’ve met him). Hugely talented and sounds better live than on his albums! He has a great rapport with the audience at his concerts too. I’m glad he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves!!!!

  74. yoyo says:

  75. umyeah says:

Loved his look. That jacket!! Loved his energy. Loved the band. So fun. And Anthony and the red hot chili peppers killed it too. You know it’s a good show when you’re like, that’s it? And it leaves you wanting more…

  76. Isabelle says:

One of the best one I’ve seen and the best part of the SuperBowl. He was old school Little Richard or Motown, just a fun & good performance. Bet a lot of people that didn’t know him before are looking him up today. Think Prince still did the best half-time show I’ve seen but Bruno was very good.

  77. Apsutter says:

This was up there with Prince’s halftime show which was appropriate bc he was on New Girl right after the game!! I love me some Bruno…he’s coming to Cleveland in June and I cannot wait!!!

  78. pru says:

    Loved Bruno!
And can I just appreciate the fact that for the last song, he just stood on a very small stage and sang by himself? No theatrics. No distractions. Just straight up sang!

  79. Kosmos says:

I saw the halftime show and I loved it !! Honestly, Bruno’s performance was really good. He’s got a lot of energy and I like his rhythmic style of singing, so I hope he stays around for a while. What I didn’t like? The Red Hot Chili Peppers, not so much…..I thought it really didn’t mix well with Bruno’s performance or his look, for that matter. They could have had someone much better to add to this….like Prince? About what one reviewer said, I, too, am still kind of getting over Beyonce’s horrible performance with her hubby at the Grammys, geez. That ridiculous chair & booty dance was just stupid. If Bey has a voice, all she has to do is use it, dress the part, but please, please…don’t reduce the performance to smoke, writhing sexily on a chair, then bringing on her husband. BAD….just bad.

  80. Bruno Mars is one of my favourite artists. He doesn’t follow other pop stars examples he just does his own thing and that’s what makes him different from the pack.

  81. lucy says:

    PRINCE.

Nothing will top Prince’s halftime performance. Ever. That is how you do that.

RHCP are lame and always have been. Kiedis can’t sing with his shirt on or off, whether or not I like their songs.

Bruno has talent, but is not my taste. At least he’s not all smoke and mirrors and smug and trash.

Why did anyone even mention Yawnce? She’s a full-on ego-trippin’ bore.

Springsteen was good enough entertainment. Better than Madonna’s gimmicky effort.

Didn’t Diana Ross get lowered to the stage from a helicopter one year?

Would be cool if there were videos posted from each year and a list of who performed so we could review and vote!

  82. amilu says:

I didn’t know much (ok anything) about him before this morning. (I didn’t watch the Superbowl or his SNL appearances, and I don’t listen to pop radio.)

But I saw some clips earlier of a 4-year-old Bruno Mars performing as Elvis Presley, and I died. I’ve never seen anything so cute in my life, and that little Tiny Elvis turned me into a fan of the grown up instantly.

  83. kitty-bye says:

Amazing show, Bruno showed such energy and talent, I loved it! I didn’t know whom he was before this show. I haven’t ever been able to sit still during an half-time show, it was the first time ever !

I don’t listen to pop radio nor watch SNL.

  84. capepopsie says:

He´s fine, but he will NEVER, EVER, EVER be Another Michael Jackson! There was only one, there will never be Another! I´m sorry.

  85. Marisa says:

Meh. Prince was one of my fave halftimes.

  86. MsDeb52 says:

Well…….we are old (61 and 73) and we loved it! Fresh, energetic, entertaining, and in our personal opinion, too short! As bad as the game was, they should have extended half time show and thrown out the 2nd half of game (just kidding – don’t get upset), but truly would have liked to have heard more. Our first exposure to this talented young man. As “Kitty-bye” said it was toe tapping, I looked at my 73 year old husband and his foot was keeping time with the music!

  87. Lauraq says:

Meh. Then again, I hate RHCP.
