Diane Kruger’s Berlinale styles: which was the best & which was the worst?

Diane Kruger is in Berlin for the annual Berlinale International Film Festival. I think she’s promoting two projects back-to-back? Perhaps. So, we have three very different looks to discuss, so let’s get to it. The first look is from a day photocall – this short Giambattista Valli (pre-fall 2014) dress in black and white. Thoughts? I HATE IT. Which is weird, because I usually don’t have strong feelings about Valli dresses either way. I want to take this basic concept – a black-and-white cocktail dress with sparkles and an above-the-knee skirt – and radically redo it. First off, don’t make the skirt so stiff and structural. Secondly, don’t put so much beading on the top – it weighs the dress down. Plus, Diane paired the dress with Chanel boots which… ugh, I hate.

Next up: the Berlinale premiere of The Galapagos Affair. Diane wore Chanel pre-fall 2014 and Stuart Weitzman sandals. Thoughts? Um… I hate this too. I don’t believe adult women should wear these twee blouses buttoned up to the top. The bolero jacket and the skirt… it’s just too much. One positive thing: I don’t hate the star sequins. I think those are pretty cool. They’re just misused on a bolero jacket.

And finally, here’s Diane at the premiere of The Better Angels. Joshua was at this premiere too, she just posed for the cameras by herself for the most part. Okay, what are the thoughts on this white Elie Saab? Yes, it looks like a shower curtain from Ikea. But… compared to the other looks especially, I love this. It’s simple and classic and rather flattering. Nice.

The sequined monstrosity made her look frumpy and bulky when she’s tiny like a bird! The white is the best I feel.

    • Anna says:

I agree on the white dress being the best, but I really cant abide by the stumpifying booties and whatever’s happening with the waist of the first outfit. So that’s gonna be the KILL if we were playing F-M-K with these outfits.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I’m just wondering, how do you sit in that? Does the skirt go ‘up’, when you do?

  2. Aria says:

Chanel is a hot mess later. No wonder why they have K-Stew as their new face.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Wow. She has really bad taste. I’d have to go with the shower curtain as my “favorite.” About the first look…is she wearing socks? Short black socks? My least favorite is spangled hee haw with bolero tie.

  4. Kali says:

Love her. Hate all three outfits. Well, strongly dislike if you want to get technical about it. The first dress is like that dress you buy on sale that you convince yourself you’re TOTALLY going to get altered to make it right for you (you never do). The second one needs to be given to either Tilda or Cate immediately. That third one either needs to have that bl00dy sheer overlay ripped off or have the skirt continue to floor length.

  5. blue marie says:

Oh, I dislike all of them, but like the boots in top picture.

  6. Beatrice says:

I like the Chanel skirt and jacket–but not together. It’s too much and makes her look frumpy, especially with that blouse. The skirt would look fabulous paired with a simpler top and the jacket over a black dress would be amazing.

  7. Teeny says:

I absolutely love the simplicity of those black heels, the rest of that sequined getup looks terrible.

As for the rest of the dresses, only the white one is flattering. That black and white number looks like it belongs on a child, which makes it odd looking on a grown woman. Paired with the boots, it just doesn’t look good.

  8. lucy2 says:

Don’t like any of these looks. She definitely has an off beat fashion sense. The white would be pretty without the sheer panels, I’m so sick of that trend and can’t wait for it to be done with.

  9. Josephine says:

She’s always kinda crazy, and she always manages to somehow be ok in those outfits that not a single other person could wear.

    • Kali says:

She’s kinda like the “pretty sister” to Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton. All three of them can pull off ridiculous clothing but only one is typically pretty.

  10. Ice Maiden says:

Diane does have great style – not necessarily in the outfits above – but why does she always look so sour? Considering that it’s essentially her job to attend glamorous events and wear haute couture outfits (what a hardship) you’d think she could manage to crack a smile every now and then.

    • Sullivan says:

Agree. Diane does have great style. I don’t hate these three looks, but I’ve seen her in in some stunning designs. These three pale in comparison.

I don’t mind that she and other actors don’t always smile. I don’t think it means they’re grouchy, just as I don’t neccessarily think the ones that smile like a ventriloquist’s dummy are happy.

      • Ice Maiden says:

True, but she NEVER smiles. She always looks like she’s sucking on a lemon and as though she’d much rather be anywhere else. This might not be so bad for a serious actor, but Diane is basically a professional fashionista these days – it’s not like she’s known for her superb acting. It’s her JOB to attend these events. And a pretty cushy job it is too. So it would be nice if she didn’t always look as though she was frogmarched to the red carpet.

    • Alyce says:

She’s smiling in the sequins picture. shrugs…

  11. Tig says:

I like the sequined pieces-just not together. I like the black and white dress, tho not with the booties. The white dress looks best on her, but the dress itself is blech!

  12. Hautie says:

Things I am extremely tired of seeing in the “Fashion World”….

Beat up looking, bare pasty legs. While wearing a gorgeous dress. On a red carpet. Where there are hundreds of flashing lights. And it makes those beat up legs… just look extremely unfortunate.

A pair of super sheer black hose, would have made all the difference in the world with that first dress. She probably could have even made those dumb black booties, look “okay” with that dress. Had she worn a pair of sheer hose. Because I like the dress. But it could not over come those black socks and booties. Attached to bare legs.

Stop with the bare pasty, beat up bare legs. It is flattering on NO ONE. What once was a summer thing… bare tan legs with expensive dresses… has turned into this frightening look. On everyone.

I am tired of all sheer see-thru skirts. That have the obvious panty showing through. Looking like a you have left the house with just your panty girdle and sheer slip on. With those extremely unfortunate, beat up pasty legs shining through.

And most of all. If a girl desires to be an Fashion “It Girl”…. for the love of all things holy. LEARN how to stand up straight. Learn how to stand and look graceful. Learn what to do with your hands. But most of all… just stand up straight. Maybe toss in a demure smile.

Standing pigeon toed, with your shoulders hunch forward… is beyond awkward for a adult female. Learn to stand with pride and confidence.

  13. Lina says:

I loove the first outfit especially the boot-sock combination. I’ d wear those boots in a heartbeat.

  14. Jayna says:

I love her, but that one outfit is horrendous.

  15. nadia says:

she looks pukey. I’m betting pregnant.

Usually Diane can wear a paper bag and pull it off, something’s off here. I kind of despise bump watch because, like, DK will never look fat to me, but something about her face and the way she’s carrying herself says knocked up.

    • Toast says:

Was thinking the same – her style has been different lately and looser around the waist except for the last white dress (spanx?)

    • Alyce says:

The gals over at Go Fug Yourself have been saying that for a while. I hope they are right, bc I like her and Peter (Fringe!) as a couple.

  16. Nanea says:

My all-white IKEA shower curtain looks nicer.

That sparkly star-sequinned Chanel dress would be nice for a 4ᵗʰ of July party, and the skirt of the Valli dress looks like a repurposed lampshade.
