People Mag: Bruce Jenner is just having a mid-life crisis with lots of plastic surgery

Last week, some sources claimed that Bruce Jenner was quitting reality shows forever and ever and that he was going to retire to some lovely Malibu property and live a quiet life for the rest of his years. I theorized at the time that if that happened, it was perhaps because Bruce wanted to avoid the publicity if and when he transitioned. I also basically said that if Bruce really was quitting the game, it was no longer any of our business if he did transition. But within hours of that widespread reporting, Kris Jenner shut it down to E! News, then Bruce gave a direct denial too, saying: “The reports of me quitting Keeping Up With The Kardashians are completely fabricated. I’m currently shooting season nine and look forward to season ten and any future seasons. I love working with my family.”

So, we’ve got that cleared up. Bruce is now and will be for some time a public figure, so whatever is going on with him is okay to openly discuss (in my book, at least). I think Bruce and Lucifer’s Homegirl realized that the conversation around Bruce was taking an unexpected turn after a recent rash of reports dismissing the very idea that Bruce is struggling with his sexual identity. The explanation that’s being offered is that Bruce is merely vain, self-obsessed and youth-obsessed. Okay. Sure.

In the Kardashian family’s special breed of endless media hoopla, patriarch Bruce Jenner has always managed to stay out of the fray. But now, amid tabloid scrutiny over his changing appearance, the former Olympian (with his altered appearance) is standing front and center.

Jenner, 64, has been open about undergoing plastic surgery in the past, beginning with a partial face-lift and nose job in the mid-’80s, a “botched” procedure that took a toll on the athlete’s self-esteem.

“If you Google my name, the worst plastic surgeries of all time or whatever it is … they’ve compared me to Michael Jackson,” he said on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

In 2009, Jenner went under the knife for a second time to correct the first operation. The process, featured on an episode of the show, garnered the support of the entire Kardashian clan. And a satisfied Bruce joked of his new appearance in a 2009 episode: “It doesn’t hurt to be mistaken for Brody once in a while. Do you think I’ll get carded?”

Despite his family’s approval, Jenner faced plenty of media scrutiny for his changing appearance, even feuding with Jimmy Fallon over the talk-show host’s harsh jokes about his transformation.

Now, four months after his split from wife Kris, Jenner is sporting a new look, one that’s raising eyebrows once again. The dad of 10 (including his four stepchildren) has been growing his hair long, manicuring his nails, and, most controversially, he has allegedly undergone a tracheal shave, flattening his Adam’s apple.

“Bruce is definitely concerned about his looks – he always has been,” says a Jenner source. “But he’s just doing his thing. He wanted to grow his hair long, so he did. He wants to get manicures, so he gets them. He always hated his Adam’s apple.”

Sources close to Jenner categorically deny that he is making any sort of efforts to transition into a woman, despite breathless tabloid claims, and say the reality star is simply happily experimenting with a fresh look. “He has this, ‘I may be an old man, but I’m cool and young too’ syndrome and no one can tell him otherwise,” says a source close to the family.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Toby Mayer, who has not treated Jenner, says that excessive physical change can be a symptom of body dysmorphic disorder, a condition in which a person has an unrealistic view of his or her own appearance.

Says Mayer: “When people have an unusual preoccupation with the way they look, they will never be satisfied. They will always find some flaw on their face that they think [fixing] will restore perfection.”

Counters the family source: “Bruce thinks he looks great. He doesn’t listen to the criticism.”

[From People]

So the explanation is “Bruce doesn’t want to become a woman, he just wants to be young and handsome. This is not transgender, this is a mid-life crisis.” Which it very well could be, God knows. It’s likely that this is the first time in DECADES when Bruce has really felt “free” – free from raising young children, free from over-bearing wives, free from a family of famewhores, and he’s just going wild. A version of “wild”. I don’t know. I guess a mid-life crisis makes sense too.

Total Michael Jackson syndrome. I believe it.

    • idk says:

      Mid-life crisis? But he’s 65. That’s NOT mid-life.

Also, it makes sense he’s not leaving the show. He wouldn’t be getting work done on his face, etc. just to go hide out in malibu. He wants to be seen as much as the rest of the family does.

  2. dagdag says:

    Isn´t 64 a bit old for a mid-life crisis?

    • silvia says:

+1, true, but you could say that for Kardashians it might be even too ‘soon’, PMK will have hers in 80 and she will still be sporting tight leather boots, because she’ll fell oh’ so young!

    • MonicaQ says:

I think it’s “I’M FREEEEEEEEEE” more than midlife crisis.

  3. JenD says:

I could believe the midlife crisis. On the show, he seemed to think he was as “cool” and young as his sons, hanging with them in nightclubs. And finally free from being micromanaged by Kris, he’s going extreme.

  4. Kiddo says:

Almost all the Kardashians have a love affair with plastic surgery sans limits. Maybe he fits in better than everyone thought.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Not to be mean, but plastic surgery has not exactly been kind to him. Why he would want more is beyond me.

  6. Trillian says:

Um, if I was getting plastic surgery to look better and everyone started talking about me changing my gender I would seriously question if the surgeries were a good idea …

  7. Frida_K says:

I don’t understand why he wrecked his nose like that. Everything else, hey…it’s his face and his stupidity. But things can be fixed…unless it’s something like getting your nose shrunk so much that you look like you have Michael Jackson Syndrome.

  8. epiphany says:

All right, let’s say he’s having a mid-life crisis at 64 – that explains the plastic surgery. How do you explain the French manicure? It’s hard to tell in these photos, but in many others, he’s had his nails done – and it’s not the simple buff and gloss that guys get occasionally. His nails are longer than mine.
People magazine exists simply to put out whatever story celebs want told. I think he is having trans- gender surgery, and wants it kept quiet -guess he should have married into a different family!

    • HappyMom says:

      Yes-the nails and the hair.

    • Penny says:

IME the kind of people that get addicted to plastic surgery take everything too far. If they get their teeth whitened, they won’t just be really white, they’ll be blindingly white. If they get hair implants, they’ll end up going beyond their natural hairline because more hair is better right? If they get manicures they’ll grow their nails out so the manicure looks better and more obvious. They completely lose sight of where the line is.

  9. The Original Mia says:

If he has Michael Jackson syndrome, they all do. Kim & Kris probably have their plastic surgeon on salary.

Just gonna say it. He looks better. He lived with the results of that botched plastic surgery for a long time. I’m sure it did a real number on psyche.

  10. chaine says:

    more like a senior-citizen crisis.

  11. swack says:

Agree that 64 is a little old to have a mid-life crisis, but will not speculate on the possibility of transgender surgery – that’s for him to know. It’s truly sad because he was a good looking man before the surgeries and would have aged gracefully. He is no longer young looking or very good looking.

  12. The Original G says:

It’s never too late to want to change the direction of your life, if you’re unhappy. Not even E! and Kris K should get in the way of that.

  13. MediaMaven says:

He’s doing an amazing impression of my Aunt Babe…….

    • kellyinseattle says:

Haha! Love it! I also have an Aunt Babe I. Her early 80s…tight leopard akin leggings, hooker heels red lipstick, peg Bundy hair…red lipstick…smoking a cigarette while telling us great stories..a laugh that makes me smile all dat! She’s phenomenal..brash but beautiful. And I wish Bruce would just live a quiet life in Malibu, live his own life the way he wants to, and be left alone…but he won’t, due to the media.

  14. realmccoy says:

I know many men that have their nails manicured. My husbands nails grow faster than mine so I have to ask him to cut them down. I think the “mid life crisis” is a valid point. That is the label but it happens whenever someone has decided it is time for a drastic change. I think he looks better than he has except for the hair weave and the lip injections. Let those two things go and he can look almost normal.

    • epiphany says:

If all he had was a nice , short masculine manicure no one would even notice – he has long nails with a French tip! These photos don’t show it well, but Google other photos of him.

  15. FingerBinger says:

Whatever happened to buying a corvette and getting an obscenely younger girlfriend when you’re going through ‘midlife crisis’?

  16. Jessica says:

I thought that, at 40, I was midlife. Good to know I still have 24 years to go and can expect to live to be 128!

  17. MissMoody says:

Perhaps. It’s possible. But as others have pointed out, he had french tips done on his nails. And shaving one’s Adams Apple is very drastic imo. Add to that the whispers about cross dressing and gender identity struggles that have been following Bruce around since his Olympic heyday and I’m still of the opinion he’s transitioning. Didn’t he just have a cancer scare not too long ago? Might have scared him into living as he truly wanted to. This is a very sensitive topic though. I think the evidence is there and had this been an issue that people were more comfortable discussing openly without being afraid of offending, I think most blogs/tabloids/readers wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it as pure vanity. I just think back to when Bruce’s Adam Apple shave appointment was revealed, he cancelled it but then still had it done somewhere else. That’s shows such a level of determination, knowing that the media is on your tail, that I find it hard to believe that it was just because he didn’t like the way it looked. But you know, people have done weirder things in the name of beauty so what do I know?

  18. Stoner says:

I don’t think he’s a transgender and will transition completely – allegedly he’s been crossdressing for years, which is COMPLETELY different.

  19. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I still can’t get over how hot he used to be….he could’ve totally been a DILF if he hadn’t messed w/his face.

If he is transitioning, I’m glad he’s not running to PEOPLE with every detail…

  20. Nicole says:

    He looks like Christopher Reeve!

  21. Peg says:

My money is on that this is some sort of transition. I’m sure that is must be very difficult to do this under such close public scrutiny, but I hope he goes for whatever he wants and I wish him well.

  22. DrFunkenstein says:

Um…Midlife Crisis? How old is this guy planning to be? 300?
