Lupita Nyong’o in green Dior Couture at the BAFTAs: perfection or just too much?

wenn21095195

I’m still not tired of Lupita Nyong’o, but I’m also wary of turning her into The Next Overexposed Starlet. This dress won’t help matters! Lupita wore Dior Couture for last night’s BAFTAs. She didn’t win the Best Supporting Actress Award (that went to absent Jennifer Lawrence), but Lupita did win a place on the top of most “best dressed” lists. I think most women avoid wearing green on the red carpet because they fear – as I would – that green-on-red looks like Christmas. But I think that fear is unjustified because look at this. Lupita provided a wonderful splash of color, the dress fit her like a dream and that green looks amazing on her skin. My one qualm: this dress seems slightly “extra” for this show and it might have made for a better Oscar dress than BAFTA dress.

wenn21095196

And now we go from someone who went overboard to someone who needed to go a bit more extra, Laura Carmichael, also known as Lady Edith Crawley from Downton Abbey. Laura wore Erdem. It’s an okay dress. It was not right for the BAFTAs. It would have been fine at a premiere, but she should have opted for a proper gown at this event. Also: her styling is awful! Did she just pull her hair back with a scrunchie?!

wenn21094902

And here’s our Irene Adler, aka The Woman, aka Lara Pulver. Lara wore Yuvna Kim London – feathered nonsense. I don’t get this at all. I don’t get the granny panties or how this is even supposed to be flattering. Ugh! I don’t even know why Sherlock saved her.

Lupita’s dress looks almost exactly like the red one that JLaw wore to the Globes in 2013, except Jennifer’s was red and had a weirdly shaped top section. I liked it then and I like it now, but yeah…weird to see such a copy.

    • Zadie says:

It looked almost exactly the same.
I saw her red carpet interviews for the first time – and I didn’t like her. She seems a bit stuck up.
      Laura Charmicahel looked really nice.

      • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Stuck up? Really? I thought she was lovely.

      • CaribbeanLaura says:

@SonjaMarmeladova. Me too. I have seen a good bit of her interviews and not once has she ever come across as stuckup. I don’t think Zadie likes Lupita very much, which is her perrogative of course.

      • Nikkie says:

        Gee Zadie,

last week you were cutting Lupita to pieces for her fashion choices being overrated and “meh” now you are saying that this woman that gives nothing but sweet interviews seems stuck up? You have a right to your opinion of course not trying to attack but can you link us to this interview where Lupita was acting stuck up?

      • Zadie says:

I think she’s beautiful and a great actress, but I’m not wowed by her fashion choices. That’s hardly cutting her apart.
So what? We don’t have to worship the ground she walks on.Gee.
She seemed stuck up in the E! interviews, especially when meeting Laura Mvula

      • AlmondJoy says:

@Zadie I did not see her red carpet interview this time, but she usually comes across as very humble. Of course, it’s only my opinion and you have your own as well. We are already well aware of how you think her style is nothing spectacular and she lies about her upbringing. No surprise that you find her to be stuck up.

      • Zadie says:

I didn’t say she lies about her upbringing, I said she downplays it. similar to very posh actors from the UK. I hardly ever said anything bad about her.

      • Mario says:

Zadie to be honest we also couldn’t care less if the Dress was yellow or purple, point is she happens to look absolutely gorgeous in this dress! a goddess, Keep your negativity to yourself, Jesus

      • peetalimbs says:

Sing it, sister! Her interviews are quite off-putting. She comes across as very pretentious and above-it-all and for what exactly? Her imdb page is nothing but tumbleweeds.

Her style choices have always been more miss than hit in my opinion. I read a post on another site that claimed that her mother is ‘gorgeous’. Lmao! Honestly, it was at that moment that I realized that most of her over-the-top admirers are not serious. It’s all a big joke. And sadly, I don’t think Lupita realizes that. She’s buying into the hype.

      • Zadie says:

No, I won’t keep my negativity to myself. This is a gossip site and I can dislike whomever I want to dislike. and I don’ even dislike her. I didn’t know we couldn’t even say something mildly negative.

      • ya says:

I loved loved loved the dress – amazing. And her makeup was perfect too.

Having lived in Kenya, she does downplay her upbringing (how posh it was & the political/elite connections she has), but I would do the same if I were her. Best not to get into it.

      • SonjaMarmeladova says:

Oh please do get into it. Why is it important to downplay your upbringing?

      • ya says:

@SonjaMarmeladova – for public image reasons. We see where being ‘typecast as posh’ has taken Benedict Cumberbatch and he has the white male privilege – which includes a colonial privilege – which Lupita obviously doesn’t benefit from.

Plus it’s such a tightrope walk for actresses nowadays anyway – they are all under such extreme scrutiny from the press and the internet commentators – any wrong move, especially when they are an ingenue like Lupita – could mean they’re out.

She obviously doesn’t want to give off any indication that she’s associated with any shady Kenyan politics/corruption.

    • AG-UK says:

      Same designer.. Dior

Lara.. just NOOOOOOO what is that and Laura needed a different hairdo or something..

    • Eleonor says:

I think it looks like the Max Mara blue gown Jennifer Garner wore not too long ago.

    • maggy says:

      bitch please

    • MisJes says:

Agree completely, this is almost identical to Jennifer’s gown from last year’s Golden Globes – it’s slightly different in the bust area. I preferred it in the red. I get it’s the same designer, but did she have to use the same gold belt Jennifer did? It just makes the resemblance more glaring.

This being said, Lupita does look quite lovely.

      • kibbles says:

Yes, it appears Lupita is wearing the same belt Jennifer wore to last year’s Golden Globes. Lupita seems like a better fit with Dior than Jennifer. I always thought Jennifer was a better fit with CK.

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

I’m an amateur sewer and believe I could make a gown with more pizazz than this – but perhaps the design was simple to make the colour stand out?

    • Kimmy says:

Exactly what I thought. Same dress, same belt, different color. So sick of Dior!!!

  2. Melissa says:

As someone who doesn’t always get the fuss about her fashion sense, I thought Lupita looked incredible. Her and Samantha Barks were the best dressed last night imo.

    • MCraw says:

I like that she went green. Dior really repeats silhouettes eh?

    • JudyK says:

Lupita looks exquisite. That’s the most gorgeous dress I’ve seen in ages but not everyone could wear it.

Actually, I’m blown away. That’s the most gorgeous woman in the most gorgeous dress ever.

    • Cheap Trick says:

I usually don´t like belts on gowns, but gold on green works quite well. Love it.

    • Mario says:

I actually thinks shes Just the same Lupita from Kenya, As a Namibian I’ve actually seen some of her previous work like the Mtv Base series “Shuga’ and well she was very sweet in her interviews and stuff!

  3. An says:

    FLAWFREE

    • V4real says:

I love the dress but it is a bit too much like JLaw’s last year. Did they put Lupita in a similar dress because they knew Jen wouldn’t be there?

It’s a miss with the make-up though. That dark eyeliner under her eyes is not working.

    • bns says:

      As usual.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I agree! Lupita looks gorgeous in this gown. I especially love that the double bracelets and belt gives it some pizzazz! When I saw this I immediately thought that she has to be one of the best dressed of the night because this is just WOW to me.

    • MsT_Shady says:

      @An

Agreed. Too much what? FABULOUSITY, that’s what.

Why are people saying that Lupita is stuck up? She’s just regal and upper class. I don’t think people appreciate that she’s from quite a posh family backgrond and her education has been with the elite. She’s no more pretentious than Cumberbutts.

  4. Abbicci says:

Did Lara Pulver leave the price tag on those shoes?

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Lupita looks beautiful, though I feel like a broken record saying it.

The sheer, the granny panties, oh please go away. So trashy, so unflattering, so trite, so boring.

    • Ice Maiden says:

Yup. That whole ‘look at my lovely legs under this sheer gown’ thing was interesting a few years ago, but it’s become very dull now. Let it go, ladies.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I agree that “the Lady’s” look was atrocious. Also, not to be mean, but I didn’t even recognize her at all. She is much more attractive on Sherlock.

  6. Renee28 says:

It’s too much dress for the BAFTAs and it’s just a different version of Jennifer Lawrence’s GG dress.

  7. Sabrina says:

I think Lupita looks great and that the dress is not too much for the BAFTA’s as it is a red-carpet event. She also has not gone overboard with the accessories.

    • magpie says:

I agree, it’s England’s Oscar so why not. The second gal looks like she’s a guest at a casual wedding. That feather thing, no, just no. If you’re gonna wear somthing like that you have to have a ridic body to pull it off, her body is nice but not over the top ridic to pull it off. It just looks tacky.

  8. Lark says:

She looked incredible. I was annoyed she didn’t win, but I did love that she seemed to take it so gracefully (she took a selfie with Fassy and titled it “EEBAFTA losers; In good company with Fasso.” In fact Fassy seemed super classy about Barkhad winning over him too….So props to them.

Ugh, Jennifer Lawrence is going to walk away with the Oscar at this point for the Real Housewives performance (this is shades of Viola and Meryl where Viola snagged the SAG & CC but the old white voters who populate the BAFTA/Oscars pool loved Meryl more & because of popularity). I love Jennifer, but no and because I also think at this point it would almost hurt her…It would be too much, like where does she go from there?

    • AG-UK says:

I was certain Lupita would win but now I have this sinking feeling she will not get the Oscar..Jennifer won last year so I don’t think this performance was Oscar worthy imo. I was shocked that Barkhad won he was too bless him. He was good but for some reason thought they’d favour Fassbender..

  9. Kate says:

I love the green gown but I tend to agree it might have been a better gown for the Oscars.

  10. babythestarsshinebrite says:

    Lupita = Stunning!!!!!

  11. mimi says:

that partially plucked disaster looks like a Bjork retread.

  12. Nikkie says:

Lupita looked gorgeous in that green Dior Couture dress. She wore it better than other ladies who had a similar dress. Those matching wrist bands and the green eyeliner just add to the perfection.

  13. Janet says:

Lupita looked gorgeous and if she’s smart she’ll lay low till the Oscars. People are already starting to say they’re getting tired of seeing her everywhere.

  14. pretty says:

I hope this win for jen law means that the Oscar goes to lupita. because i can’t imagine the backlash if jen law wins the oscar back to back. ugh!! and why was she absent? are they filming Mockingjay? ugh the atmosphere on the set must be really sad. i hope lupita wins the oscar. i haven’t had a chance to watch the film though but i did watch the american hustle and it was boring!!

  15. MrsBPitt says:

I thought Lupita really stood out in that dress! She looked beautiful…now, that feather atrocity…wow…how does someone look in a mirror and think they look good in that…

  16. LAK says:

She looked like a movie star.

The BAFTAs need an injection of movie star. As much as I love our fashion idiosyncracies, we really don’t do red carpet well. Look at all those other ladies. Urgh.

She looked amazing and she stood out for all the right reasons.

And I don’t care that this dress is a JLaw retread because Lupita is far more memorable in it and in this colour than JLaw in her dress. Honestly, I was stunned. I struggle to remember what JLaw looked like in it.

Ps: Lupita’s mom was so cute too.

  17. Tig says:

I liked the color and fit of Lupita’s dress, but that itty bitty belt Dior sticks on everything needs to go.

The feathered/sheer mess is a fiasco.

And was quite surprised to see JL win a BAFTA- totally agree with the assessment above of her ” Real Housewives” performance.

  18. capepopsie says:

I knew this was going to happen, sooner or later.
She forgot to put her dress on and came in her
petticoat, feathers and all . CHEAP 🙁

  19. maggy says:

congrat Jlaw good for the oscar

  20. eliza says:

Such elegance leaving the sample number/price sticker on the shoes. Who dresses these people? Basic common sense has you cutting tags from clothing and peeling stickers from shoes.

  21. magda says:

Lupita looks beutiful but her stylist is quite bad – repeating JLaw dress, really?
and I must confess – I don’t get Lupita, I mean she is beautiful and was really good in 12YAS, but I still don’t ‘love’ her. But I am weird person, who is not yet tired of JLaw.
And I’ve seen this weekend 12YAS and… quite meh. I mean it’s well crafted film, but I hate, I HATE ‘we shove emotions down your throat’ schtick.

Laura Pulver -it’s should be terrible but somehow she pull this off? I don’t know, maybe because it’s Irene Adler so obviously…

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

Hi magda, I don’t think that 12YAS was going the shove emotions down your throat route. I think it is depicting things that actually happen to actual people, and those things were horrible and awful and that is the fact. I just thought I had to give my opinion.

      • magda says:

you know, I do not deny strenght of the story. It’s just that they didn’t give me space to my own conclusions about my emotions. They was saying all the time “look, it is so horrible, you must feel for this people”. And without some kind of emotional blackmail I would still feel this story so much. I am just angry because I feel that the creators do not believed in my empathy?/power of the story?/ – something was very off for me, too loud in emotional departament. And I’m not talking about the story – it’s about execution. (hope you understand what I was trying to say with my non-english tongue 😉
I still think 12YAS is a very good film, it is just not as brilliant as I read in a few reviews.

    • maggy says:

you are not weird Jlaw is an amasing established actress. Lupita has only her great fashion sense to back her up which is a stunt.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I still love JLaw too! I have seen JLaw in several films and I do think that she is a good actress. Combine that with the fact that I enjoy her personality and she has become one of my favorites. Lupita I am only familiar with thru posts here but I do like her. I don’t know about her acting capabilities but what I admire about her is the way she carries herself and she has a certain elegance and formality about her. I bet I’ll will get plenty of opportunity in the future to more fully access Lupita’s acting ability and personality. I’m looking forward to it!

    • Marianne says:

I’m with you Magda. Lupita was good, but not amazing. I thought Jennifer Lawrence stole the show in American Hustle (the film was overrated…not her in my opinion). I think Lupita is absolutely gorgeous though…but I’m not sure if she will have the staying power or not.

      • Observer says:

A lot has to do with opportunity. I mean, it’s her first film for god’s sake so all this talk about “not enough range” etc is just silly. She has yet to be given the opportunity to show range and we know how Hollywood works so we might only see her showing “range” (meaning varied roles) in small budget independent roles, which not a lot of people will see obviously and then it will be blamed on “she’s just not that good of an actress” which is unfair because again, opportunity. Which unlike Lawrence, she hasn’t been given yet.
        Time will tell.

  22. smee says:

Lupita’s belt and cuffs combo is so great. I don’t even like that shade of green, but it looks amazing on her. She really does wear Dior better than JL – she has the right body-type for their clothes and she is so composed and elegant. It’s really been a pleasure to watch her this awards season.

  23. Godwina says:

Nyong’o’s dress is fabulous. Man alive, she looks exquisite.

  24. Mar says:

Lupita is amazing – I love that color on her

  25. Lucy2 says:

Lupita looked gorgeous! That color is stunning on her.
I can’t stand the sheer skirt/granny panties style- it has to be about done, right?

  26. Dawn says:

Love Lupita’s dress until the bottom and then yuk there is just too much material. Lady Edith looks fine but not great and that third dress that Lara is wearing is just awful, she has a great body but that dress is just Kim Kardashian bad.

  27. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

I just hope she doesn’t ever get botox. That stuff really makes folks look scary.

  28. Jayna says:

Lupita looks great in that color. She looks so fresh and pretty with her makeup.

  29. AlmondJoy says:

Lupita’s dress is my favorite color so I love it! I go crazy whenever I see green on the red carpet. I think I would have liked to see a softer lip, maybe a nude or golden brown of some sort. She’s so radiant.

  30. Meganbc says:

Laura Pulver forgot to remove the DSW price tag from her shoe.

  31. Mrs. Darcy says:

The colour is so stunning on Lupita, and her makeup was really fresh and pretty too. The train is a bit Oscar-y to me though. She really needs to work on her loser face, when she lost to Will Poulter for the Rising Star she looked pretty sourfaced, didn’t help he was a very popular surprise winner though I guess. I am way behind on my films, from the little I have seen I doubt J.Law really deserved it over Lupita but BAFTA does like a starlet. I definitely thought Sally Hawkins had a better shot than J.Law, she is great in Blue Jasmine (and I am of the minority that found Cate ott hammy in it – love her in general but not in it).

Lara Pulver, sorry honey but no woman over 18 can wear granny panties and no slip and look cute. Being naked all the time in Sherlock gave her delusions methinks.

Laura Carmichael’s dress is boring but she is attending as a guest not a nominee so it’s very British of her to underdress/err on the casual side.

  32. Meggin says:

Wow! That green looks awesome on Lupita.

  33. Bebe says:

I never ever comment on these things but I really wanted to write this here for some reason.

I have been pretty much obsessed with Lupita for months now. I love her. BUT. My boyfriend actually works for BAFTA so he was there last night. His job was to escort people from the press backstage and his description of her really made me sad. Apparently she was super stuck up and just plain rude to people that were working there. She dropped something and instead of asking him to get it she snapped her fingers and pointed at it and waited for my boyfriend to get it. Like, she wouldn’t even look at him. He said he handed it to her and she just walked away without saying thank you or anything.

    Basically ruining my life.

    • CC says:

Well…… celebrities as a whole are a huge disappointment in that respect. Not saying it’s nice, but the rare one is the celebrity that is actually nice to staff. Most are civil at best, mostly they’re doing their thing. And quite a few are rotten and stuck up to the nth degree with their sense of entitlement.

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

Gah I think you just ruined my life too!!! Man that sucks that she was rude like that. She snapped her fingers at him? Like he was a dog? Barf.

    • DJohnson says:

Gosh that seems so opposite of her personality and her vibe.

If it is true, then shame on her.

If it is not true, then we know the reason you had to share.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I know, that is disappointing to hear about her. Because I loved that whenever she was asked about playing Patsy, she kept saying that it was an honor to play someone like Patsy, realizing that she was only stepping into her shoes for a little bit (and got breaks from it at the end of the day), while Patsy’s pain was real and unending. That sucks to hear that she’s snooty like that.

    • maggy says:

She was under pressure everyone makes mistakes

    • tc says:

Shoot that’s so disappointing. Looks like the posters who thought she seemed snobby were right.

She’s no longer a favorite of mine.

    • AlmondJoy says:

Some will be happy to hear this about her, but it makes me feel sad. I guess the fame has gone to her head, smh. Wasn’t her mother there with her as well? I wonder how she felt about her snooty behavior.

    • Janet says:

If this story is true, Nyongo has taken a nosedive in my estimation.

I hear this a lot about people from Asian and African upper-middle and upper-class families. They treat people whom they consider the help like dirt. If she snapped her fingers at me like that I would straighten her out in short order. Snapping your fingers and pointing at an object is like saying “fetch”. Nobody has the right to treat anyone like a dog.

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

“My boyfriend actually works for BAFTA so he was there last night…. Apparently she was super stuck up”. – Bebe

Show me the video. I’m not buying what you’re selling.

Calling Lupita “stuck up” is a really saying in code that she’s uppity. THIS is a perfect example of the New Racism, so much nicer than the use a different water fountain Old Racism (and also easier to get by with and go unchallenged).

Now before e’rybody gets all huffy and starts issuing indignant denials I’m TOO PC because OF COURSE the race card, pack up your hurt injured tones and check yourself. –

Even if you have the best of intentions AND I’m very much wrong, (which I doubt), it’s not a good look.

      • Janet says:

I’m not buying what you’re selling. Nobody is playing any race cards here. I’m black and I’ve seen upper-class black, Latino and Asian people treating their “inferiors” like sh*t. Not to mention upper-class whites, but you brought the “race card” BS into this.

      • Bebe says:

Wow this is a really bizarre response.

I am black, not that it should matter, and I was not implying that she was uppity. I was just talking about someone’s experience with her. Her behaviour was that of someone who was somewhat stuck up. Making someone fetch something for you without looking at them or saying thank you is stuck up, black or white. Similar to how a lot of other stars are stuck up, I suppose.

But I still like her, maybe she had a reason.

And no, I don’t have a video of it. Do with that what you will.

      • Div says:

        @sloan Wyatt
I agree, I can’t believe people are so quick to 100 percent believe random comments on the internet. I can buy she’s even aloof or rude, but if she was snapping her fingers and being a mess the film journalists, not even the tabloids, would allude to it.

      • Mario says:

Sloane! LOL You are a sweetheart, Totally the comment of my day 😀

      • Sloane Wyatt says:

@Mario, Aw, shucks. *looking down scuffing my shoe in the ground*

    • Bebe says:

I know I’m really upset by it 🙁

Well, he said most were polite and professional, because they were at work really so they need to be. Stephen Fry was really aloof and seemed like he wanted to leave, but still nice.

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

Bebe – I googled Lupita + BAFTA + several search terms like “backstage”, “rude”, “snapping fingers”, and “stuck up’ because I wanted to give this narrative every benefit of the doubt. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

I even got the search result Fail! Lupita Nyong’o’s Dress Is Trampled At The BAFTAS By A Photog! How Rude! – http://perezhilton.com/2014-02-16-lupita-nyongo-bafta-awards-2014-dress-stepped-on, which I found pretty interesting, considering.

Janet – I provided a missing link fleshing my out my thoughts earlier, but it didn’t make it, so I’m going to try a different tack. A successful beautiful black woman who holds herself with ‘too much ’ pride being called ‘stuck up’, that’s synonymous for uppity. Not showing the appropriate level of deference, let alone looking at her dress getting stepped on, is being interpreted by an almost exclusively white mainstream media that Lupita’s getting too big for her britches.

Div – Thanks for the backup!

I’m not expecting anyone here to admit racism, but unintentional or not, casual racism is all over this narrative. Lupita’s audacity to hold herself like a Queen is just not sitting well in some quarters. – http://thegrio.com/2011/11/23/uppity-slur-still-haunts-african-americans/

I really, really hope I’m left with egg on my face when the ‘Stuck Up Lupita Points Imperiously’ story makes the gossip rounds, and you guys can give me a resounding “I told you so!”

      • AlmondJoy says:

Sloane: WOW. Interesting take on this whole situation. That truly hadn’t occurred to me. I also appreciate the link to the grio. Really opened my eyes.

      • Alexis says:

Wow, thanks for keeping it 100% real sloan, I had the same intitution about those comments. Given the dedicated contingent of haters Lupita has, I’m not about to credit anonymous sources. Especially given the racial undertone of said haters. I’m not sure how Lupita is even close to “over saturating” anything. Smh. If she was a B it would be all over the tabloids by now.

      • DeeG says:

All of this is too true. Its the first thing I saw in Bebe comments just a new way to say “uppity”. How dare she thinks she’s anything special.

  34. CC says:

Lupita has a great body and somehow Dior manages to make her a$$ look bad. FAIL. But not on Lupita’s part. Please explain: why is Dior still an “it” thing? Most of their dresses suck.

    • Amber says:

I don’t see how people can look at this dress and not be bothered by the wonky seam work and cheap looking fabric. Lupita looks radiant and the color is good on her, (I think she can wear any color.) However, as you can see well in the profile view, the top is not exactly fitting her anywhere. And this dress is not an Oscar dress to me. It’s not well executed and it’s also such a “nothing” kinda’ thing. If these gowns weren’t made by Dior, I doubt any starlet would wear them. And up-and-coming designers could not make a name for themselves putting out such mediocre (pastiche) work, with hit or miss execution, like this.

  35. Nanou says:

Didn’t like any of Raf Simmons creations since he came to Dior. And they look particularly horrible on Jennifer Lawrence. I’m probably the only one that didn’t like Lupita’s dress. The colour is great on her but it’s the cutting that i just find meh. I think this is Lupita’s advantage. She knows how to choose colours that’ll suit her. She looked amazing with a great make-up.

  36. Mario says:

Just to add my 5 cents, She was a Hit with this gorgeous dress… Its a Green Dress!! stop Bringing up Jlawrence, its so annoying how it threads! people would be alot happier if they just stopped being so negetive

  37. magpie says:

I have nothing against JLaw as a person, she seems cool…but she is sooo over rated. I saw Winter’s Bone and really didn’t get why everyone thought she was so great. She was OK, but… I REALLY hope Lupita gets the Oscar. It’s good for her and GOOD for JLaw (backlash).

    • Mario says:

LOL! I agree with you on this one Magpie, I still like her though, she was good in American hustle but not best supporting actress great, I was kinda disapointed!

  38. Leila says:

Wow I’m shocked at the story of lupita. I went to school with her and she’s the total opposite of stuck up. She’s a very humble person and quite to herself and I am not even shocked at the kind of accolades she’s getting. Another friend who still knows her can vouch for this. I would advise you experience meeting her before you pass judgements. Oh btw 12 years the movie was very tamed down as oppose to the book. Anyway all the best to lupita, she looked great last night though I hate Dior, it’s never look that great.

    • Janet says:

How she treats her friends is one thing. How she treats people she considers the “help” may be something else altogether.

      • MisJes says:

Precisely. It brings to mind a quote by Charles Bayard Miliken (and later J.K. Rowling, who also said something to this effect in HP), “It is the way one treats his inferiors more than the way he treats his equals which reveals one’s real character.”

      • Leila says:

Oh I’m not a friend, just someone I went to school with. It ends at hello hi. I only remember her because she did plays and was greatly admired here. That said on another site someone who helped her with her train said she was lovely. I guess people like to believe negatives than positives. ESP for someone who’s new and wants an Oscar I doubt she will do any of that. Anyway all the best to Lupita.

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

“Wow I’m shocked at the story of lupita.” – Leila Me too!

I am so cool with folks that don’t like Lupita; that’s totally fine. Criticize away. It’s all good!

I only gotta problem when the “stuck-up” type racist undertones are brought in.

See my responses to #33. You know if the There is something rotten in Denmark, and it ain’t the Fish.

      ‘Casual racism’, y’all.

  39. Fan says:

There is no too much for this beautiful lady. She can do it all.

  40. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

Lupita looks lovely. Although I wish she didn’t have 2 of those bracelets on, they’re a bit costume/Wonderwomany.

  41. Val says:

I am over Dior. THEY are the overexposed starlet here!

  42. Kimberly says:

I thought Lupita looked great. She looked better in this dress than Lawrence did in hers (the red version).

When I heard that Lupita was snubbed for the BAFTA, I was so pissed off but then I kinda cheered up since I thought Sally Hawkins won.

Now, I’m soooooo disappointed that Lawrence was the eventual winner after reading this article UGHHHHH !!!!!!!!

  43. ashley says:

It’s funny how one person on the internet can say something even if it’s wrong, and people just believe it. I don’t believe this for a second. She looks stunning.

    • Lea says:

+1000! She simply doesn’t give those vibes,I don’t know her personally but every person who works with her always praises her grace and manners. I surely won’t stop rooting for her.

    • Kimberly says:

      Well said ashley !!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not saying Bebe’s a liar BUT at the same time, how do I know she’s telling the truth?……….Maybe she could’ve gotten this story from some gossip site. I dunno just sayin.

Lupita isn’t immune from being snobbish and she certainly isn’t immune from making mistakes…………..but I also still refuse to believe this story.

Something about that story doesn’t seem right to me. And I’m disappointed that so many ppl. here are quick to believe it.

  44. A Mascarada says:

The thing with Lupita is, even if she’s wearing something similar to what somebody has worn before, she makes it look better. Perfection.
And about the feather mess… I’m no fashion expert, but either you use real granny panties or something you can’t see. That’s awful.

  45. stinky says:

    she is a beautiful angel.
    period!
she deserves awards for her portrayal SO much more that Jen.
American Hustle was plenty entertaining ….. But TYAS was leagues beyond in terms of substance and acting. Im getting a little sick of the Jen-fawning, im telling you.

  46. DJohnson says:

Agree with the assessment that the hidden message is that Lupita was being “uppity”. I am surprised that it has taken this long to get here. I do not believe for a moment she would tell someone in a demeaning fashion to get something for her. What I can believe is that in her focus to be prepared for her entrance and ensuring everything is just so, she may have failed to give the proper acknowledgment for the help she received. She may come from the upper crust of society, but she strikes me as a very down to earth person who is very talented, well educated, poised, elegant, brilliant, articulate, and highly driven. Oh yea, and beautiful. And I am sure that rankles a lot of folks for many reasons. Seeing is not believing but believing is seeing.

  47. jes_sayin says:

GORGEOUS. This woman is one of the few that has great taste.
She gets it.. so simple it looks sophisticated.

  48. anonnie says:

damn the Pitaphiles are vicious today

  49. Size Does Matter says:

She looks better in long dresses, I think. Her arms and shoulders are amazing.

  50. Mrs. Darcy says:

Huh. I think the charges of “casual” racism are a bit ott/, esp. given the poster of the story (claims to be) black, and also a fan. And she said black because she’s British, which to me lends a little more credence, so at the very least she’s probably British. Not saying it’s definitely true, but I just don’t get a red flag here.

@SloaneWyatt The only reference to her train getting stomped on I found was on the creeptacular Perez Hilton site.

I see no evidence anywhere of shade being thrown at her. Only one person responded to @Bebe’s story with anything other than “disappointed if it’s true”, which to me doesn’t constitute jumping on a bandwagon or calling her “uppity” all over the thread. Maybe this has gone on in other threads so there is some buildup here though, I don’t know. To me this sounds like borderline rabid hero worship of an actress who guess what, might have snapped and been rude, maybe it was a bad night for her, who knows, no one is perfect. She is a darling of the media and fans at the moment, and lord knows they like to knock people down, regardless of the colour of their skin. But if she does show flashes of diva behaviour, I think it deserves to be reported on like any other young actress.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

Just dawned on me too, I wonder when the incident w/Bebe’s b.f. went down in relation to the train trampling? She might have been wigging out that her expensive designer gown had just been wrecked and just not thinking when the finger snap went down. People snap (ohhh unintentional pun) under pressure, it doesn’t mean she’s a bad person. I’ve been a short tempered b*%ch a few times in my life, I try to keep that to a minimum but it happens.

      • Sloane Wyatt says:

“I wonder when the incident w/Bebe’s b.f. went down in relation to the train trampling?” I like that theory, Mrs. Darcy. That way Bebe’s ‘inside story’ could be true but still totally out of context. PARADOX.

“I’ve been a short tempered b*%ch a few times in my life, I try to keep that to a minimum but it happens.” – Been There Done That, Darcirina! 😮

I’m always impressed with your remarkable restraint and measured comments, especially when we vociferously disagree!. Posters like you are actually one of my top favorite things about The Celebitchy Commenter Community (CCC). We pretty much are ALL giving each other teachable moments on ‘How To Play Well With Others’!

  51. Dez says:

Sloane Wyatt, I’m impressed with your thoroughness!

I’m a Brit and we have tabloid gossip columnists who seem to have a “source” in every corner; if anything even remotely close to what Bebe describes happened, we would have heard about by now, I’m certain. They can be a ruthless breed…!

As for the Dior dress, I think Lupita looked lovely in it. She has small screen acting credits for work in Kenya, as well as directorial ones – won an award at a film festival in Mexico – and I hope we get a chance to see a lot more of her acting/directing work in the future.

Jennifer Lawrence, is young – just 23, I think – and has done phenomenally well. Good for her! She’s also beautiful and talented, as is Lupita, and for me it doesn’t have to be an “either/or” when discussing them. Here’s to seeing what she does acting wise in the future, too.

    • magpie says:

      +1. Team Sloane Wyatt.

She’s at a major event surrounded by cameras, staff, handlers etc…this would have been reported or caught on film.

I think people can sometimes take being composed or sophisticated as “uppity”. Lupita is not the gafawing “aw sucks” girlnext door like JLAW. She carries herself in an entirely different manner. It’s called CLASSY.

I don’t buy the purse story. I do buy the story about the classmate who says she is super nice and “quite to herself”. I can believe she is maybe even a little shy.

      But uppity? No, no way.
