Theo James preps out for GQ & broods in Vanity Fair: hot or too fratty?

Theo James

You might be wondering who this dude in shorty shorts is and whether he’s about to flash some goods. Theo James isn’t exactly a household name, but that could change come next month. He’s starring in Divergent as Four, the main male character who leads the Dauntless faction. Since this is an adaptation of young adult fiction, Four also ends up romancing his new recruit, Tris, played by Shailene Woodley. I’ve read the first two books in the series. The first one was interesting enough, the second one (Insurgent) seemed like overkill, and the third one isn’t going to happen for me.

The reviews are so bad for the Allegiant book that I refuse to spend money or time on it. I’ve read a spoiler on how it ends, and it seems like such a slap in the face to fans that it could actually influence them to not watch the first movie. I’m not sure how well Divergent will do at the box office. The concept is an intriguing one, but it’s definitely no Hunger Games or even Twilight. Not that Twilight was good of course, but it at least had cheesy humor on its side. The Divergent filmmakers are so confident that they are working on an Insurgent script. I think they’ve forgotten how poorly Beautiful Creatures and Mortal Instruments fared at the box office.

Anyway, Theo James is potentially poised for semi-superstardom if Divergent is a hit. He’s featured in this months issue of both GQ and Vanity Fair. GQ prepped him up quite a bit, and VF dressed him in bulky sweaters and let him brood to his heart’s content. The VF shoot matches his Four character’s personality, but I didn’t expect Four to look so … hulking. I thought he’d be more wiry in physicality. Oh well. These pictures are nice. Theo James seems like an English version of Kellan Lutz. Hopefully he won’t go all Kellan Lutz on us.

Does anyone remember him as Mr. Pamook on Downton Abbey? Swoon.

    • Original Tessa says:

That’s the only thing I’ve ever seen him in. Is he in other stuff? I thought Mr. Pamook was the extent of his whole career.

    • Stef Leppard says:

      Oh yes!!

    • Esmom says:

My first thought! The man who died in Lady Mary’s bed.

Original Tessa, he was (is?) in a series called Golden Boy, I remember seeing previews and thinking that Mr. Pamuk had crossed the pond and wondering how he’d do. He’s clearly moving up by landing this role in Divergent.

I don’t mind the photo shoot, it reminds me of J Crew, circa late 80s.

    • Liv says:

I do! And I found him pretty horrible. But I can’t wait to see him in Divergent – I might have a little Theo-James-problem then….I just hope Shailene Woodley’s not ruining the film!

  2. Kiddo says:

Way better in the photo genre than Eastwood’s son, but I hate that plaid jacket and everything that it stands for.

  3. Div says:

Theo actually has several decent films lined up/already wrapped, so I think he’ll be fine even if Divergent flops. He’s actually fairly charming in his interviews, and I believe he went to theatre school after finishing university so he’s no Lutzy. These aren’t very flattering pics though.

  4. Lilacflowers says:

Poor Mr. Pamuk is always hot.

  5. Frida_K says:

I saw the trailer for Divergent and it looks so cheesy, derivative, and risible that I cannot imagine it ever having any sort of traction.

Theo is a Walmart James Franco, IMHO.

    • Lucinda says:

Watching the trailer made me feel it was a cookie cutter YA movie. After seeing how well they did with Hunger Games, I was really disappointed in Mortal Instruments. I don’t have a lot of hope for this one. It seems the rush to turn popular YA novels into movies has spoiled the process of making sure the book can be translated well to screen and is unique enough to be appealing to a wider audience.

  6. Sixer says:

I’ve read Alleigant and I would concur: don’t bother. The first book was nice in the genre (if you don’t mind predictable). The second went downhill and the third was “Oh noes! I hate writing this now but I’ve got a film franchise and there’s no way out”.

    • BRE says:

Thanks for the tip. It was one of those series that I wasn’t thinking I wanted to read but I was on this list for borrowing the audio version.

    • Anname says:

Have to agree, liked the first, meh on the second, didn’t read the third because I lost interest in the story after the second. The terrible reviews on the third will assure I won’t eventually seek it out either.

      • Hillshmill says:

Same here. 1st book was good enough to make me read the 2nd. After the 2nd and reading reviews for the 3rd, I didn’t bother. If they had stuck with the strong young female lead rather than lowering her into a pile of love mush, it would have been better.

  7. blue marie says:

    Yay, love Theo, so hot!!
Fingers crossed the Divergent is at least decent.
And I’m one of the ones who wasted my time reading Allegiant and it kind of ruined the whole series for me.

    • KCo says:

Me too, Blue Marie. The last book actually caused for me to stop reading for a few months.

I’ve contemplated going to see the movie, because of how terrible Allegiant was.

On another note, I’ve now found some amazing book series’ (grammar!), and have realized how bad the 2nd and 3nd in the Divergent series are. I’m obsessed with the Wretched of Muirwood series right now. Read the Chaos Walking Trilogy too. Awesome books, those ones.

  8. Sabrina says:

I can’t see the appeal of him and I’m definitely not planning on watching Divergent after reading the terrible reviews of the last book as I don’t want to invest my time in something with a terrible ending.

I started reading the first book but didn’t get that into it before deciding to wait to see what happens with the last book and when that got terrible reviews I didn’t bother continuing again.

    • mom2two says:

+1 I saw him on that terrible show Golden Boy and wasn’t impressed. I feel like Divergent is another one of those YA books with a special girl who has to choose between two boys somehow. I saw the trailer for that movie and it just looked to me like, eh, something worth checking out on cable.

  9. KromBoom says:

I love his “I’m so serious and James Dean” forehead. It’s like ALL the foreheads of Justin Bieber, Jaden Smith and James Franco got together.

  10. pretty says:

Allegiant is SO BAD. It is really really bad. Good job avoiding it. Like seriously, the book was sooooo bad. I think the writer got hit in the head or something like…. i loved divergent and insurgent..i don’t even…. ugh…. i want to forget the memory of this book. it is THAT bad. it just completely ruined Four character. i just refuse to even think of it as the same series. ugh, i’m reading Divergent again right now to forget how horrible the third book was.

  11. jessieb says:

I was all set for a new movie series. Thought hmm maybe, after reading the first two books. Then read the last book and said nope! I was so irritated with that ending it ruined the whole series for me. Not wasting more money on the movie, wasted enough on the books.

  12. latelena14 says:

He sure is a handsome boy. The pictures look like they where shot in New England somewhere, so quaint.

  13. Esmom says:

My son and I both read Divergent and agreed that the author couldn’t have tried harder to jump on The Hunger Games bandwagon. Terrible and stupid, really no redeeming qualities.

  14. Tig says:

I think he very good looking- wish they could resurrect him on DA!!

I have Divergent, but have yet to read it. If Allegiant is that bad, do I even want to start it? I read the HG trilogy, and I thought Mockingjay was barking dog bad!

Speaking of YA series, didn’t the “Fallen” series get picked up?

  15. Meredith says:

i thought he was so beautiful in downton abbey but i have no interest in divergent. i cant stand the lead actress and it looks too tweeny for me.

    • Daphne says:

      +1

I liked him in Underworld Awakening as Selene’s brother. At the time, didn’t realize he was Pamuk from DA. He also had a failed CBS series called Golden Boy but didn’t watch it.

  16. cc says:

    My baby! <3

  17. Lucia H says:

He is definitely NOT a British Kellan Lutz – he has a philosophy degree and went to a pretty prestigious theatre school in London. He sure is good looking though!

  18. Lucy says:

The main reason Allegiant got bad reviews is because of the way it ends (and because genre rolls and prejudices are alive and well in nowaday’s society). And as a fan, I’m not worried at all about its impact on the movie. As for Theo, he’s UNIVERSES away from Lutz. Also, did I mention the role of Four almost went to Alex Pettyfer?

  19. Joie says:

    Hooooooooooooooooootttt

  20. Lex says:

Hahah he played the awful guy in The Inbetweeners movie haha
