Lupita Nyong’o is doing ‘what Oprah Winfrey & Whoopi Goldberg did for me’

lupita1

I feel like wallpapering my bedroom with this cover. How great is it that Entertainment Weekly chose the two most flawless ladies of the Oscar season for their ‘Oscar Race’ Issue? Amazing. It’s also great that it’s two women, you know? I’m surprised Leonardo DiCaprio or Jared Leto weren’t thrown in there as well. Maybe EW just chose the two most likely winners, although I tend to think Jared Leto is more of a sure thing than Lupita. Here are some select quotes from EW:

This week’s cover story features a sit-down with two Oscar hopefuls — the veteran Cate Blanchett (the front-runner in the lead actress category for her role as a fallen socialite in Blue Jasmine) and the newcomer Lupita Nyong’o (a lead contender in the supporting actress race for scene-stealing part as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave). The two discuss the never-ending award season, what they love most about their jobs and their hopes for the future.

Blanchett, who has spent the past six years running a theater company in her hometown of Sydney, Australia, discusses her fraught relationship with her chosen profession. “I’m constantly running away from acting,” she says. “I have to get seduced back into it each time.”

Nyong’o, meanwhile, discusses her career aspirations moving forward. “In many ways, me being on the scene is doing for little girls everywhere what Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg did for me,” she says. “My world exploded by them being on screen. Hopefully I will inspire and be meaningful to other people. But I can’t take on other people’s dreams for me. I can only dream for myself.”

[From EW]

Lupita has talked about Oprah and Whoopi before, and what a revelation it was to see The Color Purple as a child and her realization that women that looked like her could be actresses. It’s nice to think that Lupita is perhaps passing the torch (figuratively) by inspiring little girls all over the world right now.

More Lupita stuff…well, those rumors that Lupita and Jared Leto are “spending time together”? Gossip Cop spoke to “a source close to the situation” (oh, so there’s a situation?!) and the source says there’s “no truth” to the hookup rumors.

Last thing… I’m including some photos of Lupita at the party/celebration for her new Dujour cover. The dress is Peter Pilotto and I’m not crazy about it. I guess it’s cute-ish, and it’s okay for a magazine party. Should we start taking bets on who she’ll wear at the Oscars? I’m hoping she goes for Calvin Klein, but I worry she’ll wear MiuMiu.

    That dress is adorable.

  2. blue marie says:

I like the dress, think she looks lovely.

    • SnarkySnarkers says:

The dress is cute, not a fan of the shoes and someone should have told the poor thing that her dress strap was out in the last picture. Her skin is flawless, so glowy and ethereal! Sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders with the “I can only dream for myself” quote. Hoping Lupitas around for a long time.

      • JuJuJen says:

I think that dress is a dress that was designed by a chick on Project Runway. I remember it or one very similar to it that I thought was busy and odd but it grew on me. Kinda like this. Hmmmm……

  3. V4Real says:

That dress is hideous but her face looks soft and pretty. I hate when they put all that heavy make-up on her, it takes away from her looks. Look how soft her eyes look without all that dark eye shadow and eye liner they caked on her for the BAFTA Awards.

    • FLORC says:

      Thank You!
That is not a good dress. Cute lines maybe, but the print is terrible. I’m wondering if people only like the dress because she’s wearing it.

And though I love how she can wear bright, thick make up colors beautifully she looks much better a bit more natural and softer.

    • Kiddo says:

It reminds me of an Easter basket.

    • dizzylucy says:

I agree she looks best with minimal makeup, she’s so lovely she doesn’t need it. I think that’s why I like her in simpler fashions too.

    • peetalimbs says:

It seems like I’m only posting in Lupita threads these days; I’ll do better….but I must say the heavy makeup is a huge deal for me. That’s all I see. And so, I’m a bit baffled when people rave about her ‘beautiful’ skin. How can you properly assess the condition of her skin underneath all that warpaint?

  4. QQ says:

She comes off super thoughful and gracious!

  5. Neffie says:

the dress is cute but she needs to cut it with the matching shoes.

  6. AG-UK says:

I wish it was actually warm enough to wear that dress. Makes me want it to be April now. She looks lovely the cover is lovely as well.

  7. Sabrina says:

I hope that she’ll continue to get good roles and doesn’t fade into the background.

    • AG-UK says:

      +1
She only has Non stop coming out and hopefully there will be more things in the pipeline for her. She is very talented, smart and beautiful but Hollywood as a sort of narrow view.

      • Neffie says:

me too, she is a brilliant actress,i hope she won’t fade into some crappy series if she doesnt get roles.

      • FLORC says:

        AG-UK
That’s the thing about Hollywood. She’s gorgeous and sweet now. After Hollywood sinks its teeth into her who knows what the future holds.

I’m waiting for her to be in more. 1 big movie role and 1 awards season if not enough for me to be a super fan. I need more.

      • AG-UK says:

        @FLORC
I think she is smart enough to deal with Hollywood but you can be smart/talented/beautiful but if they don’t want you, you don’t get work. Time will tell, especially 6 months down the road. Another good thing she has going for herself she looks much younger than her 30 years. Without make up she looks 20/21

      • SonjaMarmeladova says:

She is beautiful, I think she’ll be fine. U said this before, but I don’t see a future for Barkhad Abdi, which is a great shame. He’s both black and unusual looking, and sadly in Hollyweird, I’m not sure any amount of talent can overcome that.

      • FLORC says:

        Time will tell.
It’s all just guessing until then.

    • starrywonder says:

Me too. Kerry Washington was the new IT girl for a minute but that seems to have waned with the dumbness of Scandal this season. Hopefully she (Lupita) can keep her momentum moving.

      • AG-UK says:

Scandal doesn’t start here until god knows when but I might be able to watch on Netflix in April when I get to the US for 2 weeks. Oh no dumbness (:

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I love Scandal–it’s not starting up again until February 26.

    • Luca26 says:

Sadly so far she hasn’t been cast yet by comparison Margot Robbie has landed a couple of high profile roles . Hollywood whitewashes everything so it’s going to be an uphill battle and she’ll unfortunately get less lucrative offers.

      • AG-UK says:

that’s what I fear. Plus they have a type for people of colour. they can say all they want but show me the money like Cuba says. 🙂 and the film roles

  8. Soxfan says:

She would look lovely, ethereal, etc., even in a burlap bag.

  9. Sarah says:

It doesn’t matter what she wears to the Oscars. She would make a paper sack look good.

  10. smee says:

She was dazzling on Letterman last night!

She was dressed beautifully, her hair and make-up were perfection. She told some funny stories and seemed relaxed and poised – despite having to deal with the grumpy lech who kept mispronouncing her name! Her posture is what blew me away the most – she must have studied dance…..

  11. JaDeRu says:

She seems very sweet and humble. I hope as she advances and gets more roles, she stays that way. And my god, she’s stunning!!
And The Color Purple is in my all time top 10. I cry, laugh out loud, and scream at the tv EVERY time I watch it and I must have seen it a million times.

    • V4Real says:

Ok, I will admitt that The Color Purple used to be one of my go to movies on a nothing to do day. Whoopie and O togther and a few other good actors. How could you go wrong

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I grew up on that movie. My mom watches it on days where she has to do a ton of homework, and just wants background noise.

The ‘Sinners have soul, too’ scene is my favorite….as well as the song.

  12. Kiddo says:

Kudos to the photographer for getting the lighting right on such radically divergent skin tones together.

    • GiGi says:

Yes! I always feel for Lupita on step & repeats, which are clearly lit for white people. But this is a pretty good shot of both ladies. I have two daughters, my oldest has Cate’s coloring and the youngest has Lupita’s. I’ve learned so much about photography and lighting! If you don’t get it just right one or the other looks awful in the pics!

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

      PHOTOSHOPPED.

Kiddo and GiGi – Look at the arms ‘wrapped around each other’ so chummily. IRLF, The only thing Cate’s grasping are her Oscar dreams going up in Smoke!

      Team Dylan. #backlash

      • Kiddo says:

Oh, you’re right. And bad photoshop at that. Retracted compliment.

      • Charlotte says:

Actually the only sure thing of that cover is Blanchett. So I don’t think her “oscar dreams” as you called them are going up in the smoke. She has won everything to this point that she is the most likely to win the Oscar.
Also, I would like if people stop mentioning Cate in the Farrow-Allen feud as she has nothing to do with it. She has no place there and it is becaming tiresome that she is implicated in this.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        @Charlotte
Woody Allen would like people to stop mentioning his child abuse, too, and the actors who support him in spite of it. In fact, he’s counting on it to continue to thrive in his career despite being a pedophile. He thanks you.

  13. wtf says:

    LOVE LUPITA. LOVE CATE.

  14. Sunlily says:

The print absolutely ruins the dress, but I love the cut and style of it. It would be so cute in a solid color. But it’s Peter Pilotto, so that’s not going to happen.

  15. lower-case deb says:

the first thing that came to me when i see the Pilotto dress (pattern and color) is Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in her green dress. they have the same hue 🙂

  16. dizzylucy says:

Love the cover, and love the focus on these two classy, intelligent, talented women.

  17. peetalimbs says:

Hm. I cannot be the only one who’s noticed that while all the other nominees are out there working on other projects, she’s only attending meaningless events. Very telling.

    • Nikkie says:

How is a newbie to Hollywood appearing on the cover of EW with one of the best actresses of her generation, appearing on David Letterman which many serious actors do and going to a party thrown in her honor for getting the cover of a magazine meaningless events?

She is a dark skinned Black woman that Hollywood rarely casts in significant roles. What else can she do but get her face out there to be seen and known so they can’t ignore her? She would be in a completely different situation if she was white like Amanda Seyfried or Margot Robbie who get roles thrown at them left and right without even one Oscar nomination. This is also the last remaining weeks for Oscar voting her winning is not as secure as Jared Leto’s so girl’s got to work it.

    • MsMaggieS says:

Unfortunately that is the case. Sad but true, Lupita will struggle to find good roles in Hollywood.

    • dizzylucy says:

I would be willing to bet she’s being flooded with offers right now, but as she was a relative newcomer, doesn’t have projects lined up like more established stars do. And many of them aren’t working right now either, didn’t Matthew McC say he was “playing himself” for awards season and not doing other projects at the moment?
The test is going to be after the awards and fashion girl hype dies down, if she is able to turn that momentum into a lengthy career. I hope so.

  18. FingerBinger says:

I’m glad she made those comments about Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg. Whoopi had natural hair,(dreadlocks), she wasn’t conventionally pretty, but she managed to make a career in film. I don’t think she gets enough credit.

    • AG-UK says:

I love Whoopi… she just tells it like it is.

    • MsMaggieS says:

Yes back then surprising enough it was easy for someone like Whoopi. Now everyone is so Image obsessed and everything is white washed, not meaning it in a bad way but that’s just the way it is.

      • AG-UK says:

exactly and if you are investing tons of money in films etc you want to recoup that and to be able to you need to be able to “sell” that image to the rest of the US.

  19. Lucy says:

DAT COVER. So much amazingness I might burst. And more one the Lupita/Jared thing? Good Lord, she has definitely arrived.

  20. magpie says:

She is smart and educated. If Hollywood doesn’t work out she always has a Yale degree to fall back on.

  21. Musi says:

Yes yes I hate when her make up is caked up. She looks stunning. Honestly I think she will do good, she’s talented, super intelligent and seems level headed. She’ll struggle true but I’m sure even without anyone knowing her she’s booked two good roles as supporting. (though small). With the exposure now, I’m sure she will get more than previous women of colour have gotten. Heck she even made a budget documentary on Albinism before she went to yale and had a law passed on it in Kenya. With or without Hollywood I’m sure she’ll be successful.

  22. Ally8 says:

Thank goodness the cover line wasn’t “Oscar race”.

If she wins, though, I’d be concerned about the proportion of African-American women ‘rewarded’ by the Academy for playing slaves.

  23. homegrrrrl says:

Blue Jasmine was the most misogynist stupid portrayal of a woman; Reeeeely? The lady was a Brown university graduate, who couldn’t deal with a nine to five job. As an aside, woody allen wants to destroy all smart women from the inside out, and I really couldn’t abide this film. I have lost respect for KB, and will boycott hollywood if this role wins an oscar. Yes, she did as well as she could, but then why don’t we give the real Linda Lovelace an oscar for dutifully and deeply sucking c(*k ? This PEEVES me to no end.

PLEEEEEAAAASE give the win to Lupita; her role was so relevant, and something we all want remembered historically, as a painful reminder. Please.

    • Lucrezia says:

I think you did not understand the move quite well. It was not because of Jasmine intelligence (She did cope with her job quite well till that awful dentist made a sexual avance on her) and it was that she end like she did. She had a difficult mental condition (a combination of depression, bordeline personality disorder and anxiety to boot) that if it was not treated, she could not improve. I did not find that Allen treat her in slightless misogynist at all. And sorry, I do not find the rest of your comment quite reasonable to be true.

  24. toddy says:

Lupita is stunning…her skin is so beautiful…

  25. Dez says:

Great cover of Cate and Lupita!

Well, if Hollywood isn’t able to appreciate the latter – and I hope that many more good roles are in the offing – I’d be delighted to see her here in London on the West End stage. I’m sure that she will get solid, challenging offers of work outside of the U.S.A.

I hope she gets the opportunity to mix it up doing theatre, television and big screen, like many of our best actors. Maybe, she could talk to Chiwetel and Benedict about that..they could surely offer a few helpful pointers.
