Amy Adams in Frocktalk at the Costume Designers Awards: glam or unflattering?

Here are some photos from Saturday night’s Costume Designers Guild Awards, which must be one of the most fun of all the guild awards, I think. It’s a moment when everyone can come together and recognize all of the fun fashion in films for the year, and this year has been pretty great for costume designers. Off the top of my head, there are two films in particular where the costumes literally stole the scenes away from the actresses: Blue Jasmine and American Hustle (Jasmine won a big award too). And Amy Adams, always a team player, came to the event to help celebrate the Hustle team (plus Amy got a special award too). Amy wore this gown by Frocktalk, a label I’ve never heard of. The dress is pretty enough, and I like her old-Hollywood styling.

Olivia Munn in J. Mendel. Super-flattering! I had no idea she had such a tiny little waist. Great cut on her.

Mindy Kaling in Salvador Alvarez. I actually like Mindy in turquoise and the cut of this dress is flattering on her. My problem is that her makeup looks awful!

Raquel Welch – good genes? Or a crazy amount of plastic surgery?

I was more than halfway through American Hustle before I recognized Elisabeth Rohm. She played Jeremy Renner’s wife, just FYI. She wore this Badgley Mischka. I don’t hate it. The black-and-white is actually a nice respite from all of the blues and greens at this event.

Kiernan Shipka in Delpozo. I love this young woman. It never feels like she’s dressing inappropriately for her age or for the event. This is a perfect look for her.

Crystal Reed in Naeem Khan. I had no idea who this girl was, so I had to look her up. She’s in Teen Wolf. She’s very pretty. I think she might have had the best makeup of any girl there.

I actually think all of these women look fantastic. So much pretty blue and green!

That green is Adams’ color. I wish she would wear that color more often. Also, her body continues to be killer.

Munn looks great too. Love that aqua. And go Mindy. I don’t even mind her make-up.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. They all look so pretty. That color is glorious on Amy Adams! Kiernan looks adorable. Mindy’s dress is so flattering. I’d give her a little more lip color, but she looks great. Everyone else looks quite nice as well. Agree it’s nice to see blues and greens.

I’m usually defending what Amy Adams wears but I think this dress is the worst look on her. Mostly because it looks like the darting for the bust is sitting near her waist…what’s up with that?

    • LadySlippers says:

I didn’t like it either. Colour is nice though.

    • Cleveland Girl says:

I agree – plus she looks so uncomfortable in it

    • Kiddo says:

Terrible dress on AMy. Mindy Kaling looks va-va-voom here though. She picked a flattering dress.

I just recently realized when that some women when they are so fit and slim they loose their hips. Amy maybe one of them, this dress in my opinion is good on her but she needs to gather either waist by a different shape of dress or maybe work some squats and gain a tush. I think she will fit into her dresses even better. I love her she is so beautiful but being slim and shapely is very hard. Hope she get the big O this year! 😉

Source: I just recently was trying out a lot of dresses with my bf’s sister and she is a super slim size 2 and her shoulders are wider than her hips and its difficult for her to find a dress that flatters her. I’m a size six pear shape/hour glass and I could try on the same dress and it would strangely work on me because of my big *ss.

      • KromBoom says:

Tell her to try wrap dresses! Great fit for wide shoulders and no waist ( that is me ) And you can really dress it up with a hot pair of heels.

    • ichsi says:

Agreed, The bust of Amy’s dress does not work AT ALL! Her whole figure is swallowed up in it and she looks likke a blue long-sleeved brick with a beautiful face.

I know nothing about Munn, only that no one seems to like her. She is absolutely gorgeous though!

I don’t really get Mindy’s style. She’s pretty but she always wears dresses I would choose. And I’m a good six inches taller than her.

      • MeetMyUserName says:

This is one thing I think Amy is suffering from this season. The dresses fall on her pretty (mostly), but she her current weight/body shape leaves her with no defined waist, so she often looks a little boxy in her clothing. This happens to a lot of actresses who are older but trying to remain super slender to fit into revealing clothing. I think the squats suggestion would be a great idea.

I mean compare her to Elisabeth Rohm. I’m not super crazy about Rohm’s dress, but her waist/hip ratio is both fit and sexy.

Munn and Kiernan Shipka for the win. They both look great, each in her way.

  4. Pumpkin Pie says:

Raquel Welch looks amazing. And she still looks like her younger self. Not like a certain keau who still denies having face and tush alterating surgeries.
My two cents on Raquel: she was very beautiful, to begin with. She had enough self-confidence – as in not going overboard with the surgeries, plus she had a good surgeon, plus she has good genes. She is a very lucky lady. Look at how many women in Hollywood destroy their looks.

  5. serena says:

I like Amy’s dress, it’s not beautiful but somewhat striking! As for the other ladies, they did good. I can’t help but like little Kiernan, she’s such a cute thing and good actress.. I think she’ll do great in the future!

  6. L says:

That dress color makes Amy Adams’ eye color really pop. The fit could use some tailoring, but overall it is a great look for her.

Crystal Reed’s face looks off to me. Great makeup sure, but frozen like a statue.

  7. Tig says:

I love that color on Amy A. Mindy looks great, and the cut of that dress on Olivia is amazing.

I am of two minds on KS- she is cute, and it’s a cute dress. However, she is what?-14?-I am vaguely uncomfortable with a 14 yr old being hailed as a style icon of some sort- it just seems like a lot of pressure on her!

  8. dizzylucy says:

I like all of these looks – Amy’s doesn’t fit perfectly, but the color is great on her. I like the 2 black and white dresses too.

  9. We Are All Made of Stars says:

This is a nice crop of looks overall, but with some problems here and there. The aquas and blues are beautiful and really bring out the womens’ coloring. Amy’s bust darting is awful, and I think the v-shape of Olivia Munn’s dress makes her look extremely broad-shouldered. Not to sound totally nasty, but Raquel Welch looks like Sexy Grandma doing her hand-on-the-jutted-hip-while-wearing-pantyhose routine. She’s a naturally beautiful woman, with some help of course, but she’s like 70 for Christ’s sake! You shouldn’t have to try hard at that age. I totally need Kiernan’s shirt in my life, and I love Crystal Reed’s dress. She’s very pretty and has an interesting face shape.

  10. Nikkie says:

Amy is the best dressed out of the group. Not a fan of the other dresses except for the cute young girl.

  11. bella says:

    WAIT!
Raquel Welch is SEVENTY-FOUR YEARS OLD!
Probably older, given this is what she admits to.
It’s one thing to have exquisite plastic surgery on her face…
    But – her neck.
How does it look like that if a 30 year old???
Same with Jane Fonda…I done know how it’s possible!!!

Olivia Munn looks the best I’ve ever seen her.
All of the ladies look lovely.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I don’t know anything about Munn, really, but I love that dress.
      Mindy’s dress is fantastic too.
BTW, this family of blues is my absolute favorite color/s in the world! They just do something for everyone. I’ll refer also to Lupita’s blue gown from, you know, that important awards function (golden globes, maybe?)!

  12. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Elisabeth Rohm was an OG in American Hustle.

My favorite scene of hers is when they’re going to the bar/resturaurant with all those gangsters, and the minute she sees them, she makes all the kids go upstairs for pizza…..she had her hubby’s back.

  13. ray says:

kiernan kinda looks like emma watson. i think its the eyebrows.

  14. Dawn says:

I think they all totally lovely and I don’t get to say that very often. No one looked in the least bit slutty or whorish. Wow Rachel she just keeps on looking good, I hope I can look half as good as she does when I hit that age group.

  15. Stubbylove says:

Mindy has never looked better!! That dress is fantastic and a perfect fit on her – well done!
