Jared Leto gets hairy & metaphysical in Flaunt: weirdly attractive or too try hard?

Jared Leto

Jared Leto appears in the March issue of Flaunt magazine. He really looks like an ombre, hipster version of Scarface‘s Tony Montana in the above photo, right? I’m not feeling this shoot at all, and it gets even weirder, but I should just be happy this isn’t an Uncle Terry production.

Jared’s promoting his role in Dallas Buyers Club as much as he is campaigning for that Best Supporting Actor Oscar (which is, by all accounts, probably a done deal for him). Jared has done well for himself during this massive press tour that is almost over. Less than a week! He started off all wide-eyed and innocent about his prospects as a nominee. Jared rapidly moved on to shading actors who complain about the process. Then Jared responded in a classy way to a heckler, which won over many hearts that were not already devoted to Jordan Catalano’s battle in life.

Jared’s not watching his image all too well lately despite his charming ways with the media. He’s posing for gross Terry Richardson shoots and probably hooking up with Miley Cyrus. Plus — and I hate to sound vain — Jared could use a little sprucing up in the grooming department. At this point, I am ready to take a pair of scissors to that hair. If he wears a ponytail to the Oscars, I will groan in displeasure. This interview is bizarre. Jared goes off on a tangent about Google Earth. He’s thought a lot about the topic. Let’s do this:

His London hotel room: “This is where my place is on the world. F—. Do you have the key?”

He’s a little bit spacey: “The way that we think about our position in the world, in relationship to the planet, has changed because of the way we travel from place to place. We now look down on the planet rather than looking across. I met with the creator of Google Earth and he asked me, ‘What have you learned from using Google Earth?’ And, you know, I gave him some bullsh-t answer. But, actually, the thing that I learned is that we all see the planet differently now. We look down on ourselves. We used to look across the horizon. Now, we look down. We all have a map in our mind of where we may be and the ability to access that. Your perspective changes because of location-based applications. Your perspective has now become, ‘This is where my place is on the world.’ Which is interesting. It’s from the top looking down. Which is kind of strange and interesting, that our perspective is from above. From space.”

On taking risks in film: “I’ve made a lot of films that have fallen short. Films where we had the right intentions. Independent art house films that we all had high hopes for, but fell short. Gaining sixty-seven pounds for Chapter 27. Yeah, I think I’m willing to risk everything. I don’t say that with any conceits. I say that as a fact. I don’t see there being reward in another way. At least any worthy one. So when they connect with people and the films resonate, or the performance resonates–it’s a really wonderful thing to celebrate that.”

He loves his Rayon character: “For me, I made it very clear early on that I saw Rayon as a man who wanted to live his life as a woman, not someone who enjoyed putting on women’s clothing. If they wanted that kind of performance–or anything glam, or anything drag queen-y–I wasn’t the person for the part. She’s an incredible, empathetic, beautiful dreamer. A heart the size of an ocean. She’s an absolutely one-of-a-kind creature. So, a lot of love and support for her as well. I feel like she became a person, a real person. Especially because I was so deep inside of her. I really feel like I got to know this person. It became like a living, breathing life. It was a once-in-a-lifetime role.”

On the Oscar buzz: “This is a crazy time in my life, but it’s a focused time. It’s not like it’s out of control. You only get to do this once and in this case once may be the only time you get to do it. It’s a funny way to say it, but it’s kind of true. I’m acutely aware of that and very respectful of the path I’m walking down. I’m glad that this happened to me now and not when I first started. It’s a really good thing.”

[From Flaunt]

Jared is in the home stretch. I wonder if he has any big plans to celebrate his win. Yeah, he’s probably going to win, but this shoot won’t help his chances. What’s going on in this picture — is he pretending to defend himself against an intruder? Maybe Uncle Terry showed up on the set, and Jared was like, “Dude, you are killing my chances for this Oscar.”

    It’s just Jared being Jared.
And don’t you DARE touch that hair Bedhead!!!
    It’s beautiful!
P.S. He needs to take some Resolve upholstery cleaner to that couch. Ew.

  2. blue marie says:

For me, he’s been try-hard since about 30 Seconds 2nd album, the dude’s annoying.

    • bns says:

He is annoying and really pretentious, but I’m still attracted to him 🙁

      • Lady S says:

Word. This dude is super hot. Yeah, he’s probably an egotistical douche. but how attractive I find him just won’t go away.

      • V4Real says:

+1 I don’t know what it is about Jared. I too believe he is a douche, a jerk and all of the above but I am still hot for him. He might be 30 seconds from Mars but when I see him I’m about 30 seconds from a……. ooooh let’s keep it clean V.

    • Diana says:

Yes, he is so annoying. I’ve been over him since “A Beautiful Lie “(I already said that in another post, but how bad was this album??omg)
Very try hard + the Terry shoots killed it for me.
Hope Michael Fassbender wins the oscar.

  3. AG-UK says:

Sorry he is H O T. I would have him in a NY minute AND NO he is not hooking up with Miley Cyrus. Every person he stands next to now he is dating/ hooking up. Ooh must try to find this magazine in London. 🙂

    • Lady S says:

Well I think it’s safe to say we have no idea who he is hooking up to or not. So he could be hooking up with Miley, Lupita, or anyone else, or not. But my guess is he’s hooking up all over the place. Because he can.

  4. Rayche says:

Jared is smart. He’s an entrepreneur and that’s not an exaggeration of the word. He started Vyrt, which is a live streaming service that I believe Rihanna and I know others use (you can buy a ticket and watch a full live concern online). He’s super involved in the tech world, he also has ‘the Hive’ which is a marketing organization/base production for him. He said at one point that he builds his own super computers from parts of others. He’s a smart, smart man. He’s attraction to Google Earth makes sense.

  5. aims says:

Do you think he highlights his hair? I’ve been trying to get my hair color like that for months.

  6. yennefer says:

He’s labeled as a douchebag hippie in my book.

I hate his hair is better-looking than mine.

    • AG-UK says:

and not a grey hair in sight gughghghghghg. I think he has that hair that gets light in the sun but he seems to have gotten rid of the ombre bits at the end.

  7. Dreamyk says:

That couch. It’s all I can see. It looks like a left over prop from a p0rn flick gone horribly wrong. And by wrong I mean someone didn’t make it to the bathroom in time.

  8. bns says:

I wish Barkhad Abdi would sneak in and snatch the Oscar from him.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

I saw Leto with his band in concert at Paris last week with my niece and her friend who are fans. Her friend won a meeting with the band at the afte party. We waited 3 hours her friend after the concert and her friend is not fan anymore now. As the musicians were nice with her ( pics, autograph) as Leto was mean with her and the other fans

  9. themummy says:

Looking at these photos I wondered how old he is and that he looks younger than me (36). He 42!!! The man is aging superbly, at least judging by these photos.

  10. serena says:

I just want to give him a good shave and haircut. He’s so beautiful but like that he just seems gross.

  11. Lady S says:

It bothers me how attractive I find this man. I usually don’t like the pretty ones. I also usually am not attracted to the ones with douchey reputations. But this man. I just can’t. He’s insanely attractive.

  12. Size Does Matter says:

He’s hot, but he needs a blowout or trim. Hair isn’t working for me. It looks too much like mine in the morning when I go to bed without drying it.

  13. Side-Eye says:

I don’t get the attraction to this guy.

  14. Mandy says:

Everytime I see this guy, I think “Hipster Jesus”. I’m sorry, I just do.

  15. Seán says:

As a heterosexual man, I will admit he’s very pretty. He even had me question my sexuality for about 5 seconds in Dallas Buyers Club. That said , I’ve watched various interviews and roundtables and he’s such a smug, fake douche (Not just because he tried to cosy up to my future wife Emilia Clarke). If I were to vote on acting ability alone, I think I would give him the Best Supporting Actor but I too hope Barkhad Abdi swipes it (he was excellent in Captain Phillips).

  16. Rux says:

I don’t like the shoots, but the whole article was exquisite, good journalist. I think Leto has been campaigning very well, the Oscar is his and I am happy about that because I have always admired his acting talent ever since Requiem ( while my friends had totally different crushes, I was stunned by his acting and his weirdly, unusual pretty face ); however I dislike his band very much, and detest his behaviour, which is very arrogant and narcissistic – like fans should be grateful to him for being there and NOT the contrary. Even when he speaks with such humility, he’s just being his fake public persona. Disappointing because it’s such a waste of hotness 🙂

  17. Christina says:

He may or may not be kinda douchey…but it does not really matter. He is painfully beautiful and sexy. He is also well read, smart and talented. Great actor and musician. I really like his band and would even if he was an unknown. Though his gorg face and body make the videos all the better.

  18. Mazunte says:

I find this photo shoot absolutely stunning. The clothes are beautiful, he looks gorgeous and the touch of decadence makes it interesting.

I agree that Jared is very narcissistic but his true persona might be a mystery. I met someone who worked for him and says he is not always easy but he is a hardworking, talented and funny guy. He is smart and an entrepreneur.

In spite of his narcissism I admire him, not for his hotness (tough, he truly is ridiculously hot) but for what he has achieved considering he grew up poor and was a troubled teen.
