Lupita Nyong’o in gold Stella McCartney at the Spirit Awards: adorable or awful?

I now have a very real fear that Lupita Nyong’o is going to wear Stella McCartney at the Oscars. Surely not. Surely Lupita has so many designers trying to dress her and she realizes she could do so much better? Lord, I hope so. Because for the second time in a week, Lupita wore Stella McCartney to an event. These are pics of Lupita at last night’s Spirit Awards – she won! And once again, Lupita is so lovely and adorable, she almost makes Stella’s designs work.

This is what I would call a “jumper” or a “onesie” – it’s a design that doesn’t really say “awards show” to me, but the Spirit Awards are low-key enough that Lupita looked appropriate. She’s also petite and small-breasted enough to pull this off – if this was on a woman who had B-cups or larger, this would have looked dumpy and waistless. I also have to admit, this was much cuter in motion. When Lupita won, she ran to her director, Steve McQueen, and he lifted her up and carried her to the steps of the stage. The onesie looked very cute in that moment. PS… Lupita’s mom was her date and it was pretty amazing. Her mom was super-proud.

Here’s Lake Bell, also in Stella McCartney. Lake is not pregnant. But I would see where you would come to that conclusion considering Stella pretty much designed a maternity dress. The material is super-stiff too, which is why the dress doesn’t really have a good “drape”. Also: Jesus, those bangs. Lake is pretty, but STOP WITH THE BANGS.

And here’s Melonie Diaz, who was nominated in the same category as Lupita (Supporting Actress) for her work in Fruitvale Station. She was wonderful in Fruitvale, and I hope her performance gets her more work in Hollywood. Her dress is Preen. It’s cute and the graphic works.

I love this. She looks great. And the make up is nice too.
    Weirdly, I love Lake’s dress.

  2. kibbles says:

Lupita’s make-up is nice (no bright eyeshadow!) but her outfits have been pretty bad lately. A dress would have been more appropriate for this event. I really hope she does herself a favour and does not wear Stella McCartney or Marchesa to the Oscars. I realize her mom isn’t a celebrity, but Lupita should have worked her connections to get her mother a better dress too. That neon green dress is simply awful.

    • Sullivan says:

      I like Lupita’s make-up when it’t understated like this .

      I love Luptita’s Mom.

    • Audrey says:

We’ve all been saying that she needs to stop matching her eyeshadow and shoes to her outfit

She finally did that but now her outfit is awful.

Hopefully she gets it right tonight

  3. LAK says:

Please can we celebrate the fact that Lake Bell’s first directorial film, IN A WORLD, was nominated in best debut feature category!!!!

Yes, dress is terrible blah, blah, but her first effort as a features director was nominated!!!!

    • Amelia says:

I bloody love In A World, ridiculously funny.
Stella. I just can’t. Why Lupita, *why*? There are so many better designers out there!!

Slightly off topic – will there be an Oscars open post for those of us who’d like to keep up with commentary/fashion but don’t have access to a TV channel that doesn’t require a subscription to watch them?

      • LAK says:

I stay up and look up links or I come on here to the live blog and ask and usually someone responds with a link.

Wierdly, the DM has a livestream of the redcarpet for about 1.5hrs ahead of the ceremony. It’s rather good as it’s run by AP.

      • jen says:

Ugh. NO!!! She looks like a clutch purse. No sale on this outfit. She is so gorgeous, but why…why??!?!?!?!

    • Kiddo says:

I will have to check that out. Is it streaming anywhere yet?

I don’t mind the dress so much. Her facial expressions look so pissed off, though. Is that part of her persona? I know zero about her.

      • LAK says:

I don’t know if it’s available to stream, I saw it at a festival. I really recommend it. It’s very funny.

I know her from various sitcoms and or terrible romcoms. The only good thing I can think of is IT’S COMPLICATED in which she plays Alec Baldwin’s 2nd wife.

I didn’t know much about her career outside of her acting gigs, so this film was a pleasant surprise.

  4. Eleonor says:

No that dress is a mess even on Lupita, she looks like she’s fallen into a crocodile bag.

    • pru says:

Ha! A scaly mess. But, I think it’s a shorts/onsie, not a dress. It’s too long in the waist/crotch and hits her legs in the wrong place.

    • maynot says:

I agree. First of all her legs are not her best assett, so shorts for a formal event is not a good idea.
Besides these are particularly unflattering. Finally she should improve in shoes department.

  5. eliza says:

    Horrible fashion choices all around.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I usually don’t love the onesie, but I think Lupita looks really cute.

The other two, not so much.

    • Kiddo says:

Her legs look adorable. I don’t like the texture of the fabric though. It’s like insulation for appliances, packaging for shipped frozen goods or something like that. Maybe the actual texture isn’t translating well over the internet, or I am just misreading it? The color is very complementary, tho.

  7. Lark says:

Lupita pulls it off and looks fab, but that’s the kind of outfit people with only a specific body type can wear imo. Big boobs would look ridiculous in that outfit; same with women who are super skinny. She has a good body type to wear that type of outfit. NO way she wears Stella imo. She tends to go with “big” designers for the big awards shows: Dior, Calvin, etc. My guess is Calvin or maybe Armani.

  8. bettyrose says:

Why exactly is designer sack Lake Bell’s new thing?

  9. Lucy says:

I don’t know Melonie (yet), but I want her dress!!!

  10. Nance says:

Are they going to every carpet ever before the Oscar or what?

  11. LaurieH says:

Not a fan of Lupita’s look. Then again, I am not a fan of Stella McCartney. It looks like alien battle armor. In fact, I find the fabric to be kind of creepy. As to Lake – ugh. She indeed looks like she is wearing a pregnancy tent and her hair is just ‘no’. Melanie’s dress is just okay. Nothing original, nothing all that interesting. It just looks like an off-the-rack dress.

  12. Suze says:

I am so happy she won I am willing to overlook the McCartney mess.

I will say she is among the very few women who could make this look less than hideous.

  13. Micah says:

    Both those Stella’s are hideous.

Curious…..The top 2 photos of Lupita, clearly indicate dark colored stockings being worn, but the bottom one with Brad, they seem to be absent. It looks better without.

I’m thrilled for Lake Bell, whom i think is so beautiful. Her dress however is awful.

    • mayamae says:

To me it looks like the lighting in the picture with Brad is better, making her legs look a different shade.

  14. ichsi says:

The onesie did look far better in motion. Her legs look amazing in it.

    • Zadie says:

Am I the only one who thinks her legs aren’t all that much?

      • peetalimbs says:

        No. You’re not alone.

To be quite honest, her entire body is a complete dud to me. I certainly wouldn’t want to switch places with her in that department.

      • Cecilia says:

Zadie, you’re not alone. Her legs are definitely not her best feature & I wouldn’t be highlighting them like this.

  15. Maritza says:

Maybe if Lupita had at least unzipped it up a bit it would’ve looked better, she looks pretty though. Lake Bell has awful taste I’ve never liked her choices in styles.

  16. jasmine says:

I really don’t get the fascination with this woman, yes she’s pretty, but every other post is about her and how amazing and next to godly she is, jeez…people are acting like she’s the second coming! I ALWAYS skip her posts but finally I had to rant!

  17. Renee28 says:

That onesie is not cute and I would not let my mom wear that cheap prom looking dress.

  18. Lee says:

The second photo – side view – of Lake’s dress made me LOL. Does Stella “design” this unflattering crap just to make women look ridiculous? Or is it just a profound lack of design talent? And that onesie is skating very close to ridiculous as well. There seems to be a collective case of “Emperor’s New Clothes” going on in Hollywood in relation to Stella.

  19. Ice Queen says:

    Meh…

  20. Musi says:

For once I love her make up. Okay dress.

  21. MacScore says:

Lupita looks like an armadillo. I’m sorry, but just NO. The table-cloth/stiff curtains that Stella grabbed at the last minute to throw over poor Lake should be *banned forever*. I realize that Stella actually did graduate from design school, and that the admissions department claimed “not to know who she was – McCartney is after all a fairly common name” (*choke, guffaw*), but can’t we please get the school to rescind her diploma? I mean, has she EVER designed anything flattering, lasting, creative, original? Quite simply, as a designer she sucks.

  22. Jen34 says:

Yikes. Her outfit is scaley and awful and so is her mom’s. Her face, however, is beautiful. I just don’t understand how some of these actresses get led astray by their stylist.

  23. TheCountess says:

Someone here yesterday suggested Lupita has changed stylists since the red carpet season began, such a huge decline in her looks we’ve seen. I think that is right. This is just… blech.

Lake Bell looks MUCH better than she did in yesterday’s atrocity, but yeah, lose those bangs.

  24. phlyfiremama says:

That Preen dress is AMAZING!! WANT~~~

  25. A Fan says:

Not the most flattering look on lovely Lupita. She should always highlight her upper body and that beautiful face and skin. It should be so easy to dress her and do her makeup.

[…so how come there are all these ‘fails’?]

  26. smee says:

Lupita! She’s worn so many great things during this awards season, but this isn’t one of them. I don’t find it particularly flattering – in cut or color. She has an amazing figure – this jumper doesn’t do it justice……..

  27. bns says:

She looks great and, for once, I don’t hate the shoes.

  28. DiamondGirl says:

Lake’s thing looks like a billowy skirt that she pulled up to wear as a dress.

  29. taxi says:

Ridiculous jumpsuit, straight from the ’70s, worn with the wrong shoes. Girl, hide those pins! And if you love your mother, how about fixing her up in a nice outfit that doesn’t look like it came from a thrift shop?

  30. Godwina says:

I’m an odd-woman out on this board, as I love a lot of Stella’s designs. This one, however? Nope.

  31. moon says:

Gosh, that onsie is AWFUL but Lupita actually makes it look good!! can this woman wear anything wrong, seriously

  32. Lucy2 says:

I strangely kind of like it on her! Not sure why.

  33. renie says:

Funny how you all are falling over yourselves to compliment this woman.”I like it but don’t know why..” just say it..she’s black and I’m scared to mention some sartorial flaws because I don’t want to seem racist. She seems like a really nice girl and that should be that.
