Oscars Recap: Ellen DeGeneres, selfies, pizza & no surprise winners

oscars ellen

This ^^ is the selfie Ellen DeGeneres took in the middle of the Oscar ceremony. The only way this could have been better is if Benedict Cumberbatch had joined in. Even without Bnedict, this photo still “broke Twitter” as Ellen announced during the show.

Anyway, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this Oscar ceremony had some of the best audience numbers in a decade. Everyone loves Ellen DeGeneres, and she didn’t disappoint. She kept things mostly breezy (there were a couple of awkward moments) and mostly clean, although there were some funny and dirty jokes. Her opening monologue was quick, fast and dirty. I loved the opening weather joke (Californians have been freaking out over… rain) and the “dirty” joke was about Jonah Hill’s junk. The funniest bit was definitely Ellen making fun of Jennifer Lawrence for falling up the stairs at last year’s Oscars. Ellen also made a timely joke about how J-Law fell down on this year’s red carpet. Ellen must have seen that and added some up-to-the-minute jokes on the spot. You can see the full list of last night’s Oscar winners here. Some other highlights:

*Jared Leto’s acceptance speech was wonderful. I was surprised by how humble he sounded and how respectfully he spoke about AIDS, his fellow nominees, and his mom.

*Pharrell Williams’ performance of “Happy” was wonderful. I wished he had worn a real Oscar outfit (rather than jeans), but his voice sounded great. Plus, Meryl Streep & Lupita shook their moneymakers during the song and it was magnificent.

*Kim Novak’s face… oh my lord. I mean, I LOVE Kim Novak and in her heydey, there was no one better. But there was a big dose of Madonna Catface there. Plus, she presented to Frozen. Cough.

*Karen O’s performance of “The Moon Song” = surprisingly effective and haunting.

*When 20 Feet From Stardom won Best Documentary, Darlene Love got up there and did some old-fashion TESTIFYING. I loved that she got a standing ovation from the audience.

*Ellen’s pizza bit kind of fell flat. I guess it was meant to be a running joke, but I wasn’t feeling it – it was too awkward. But I LOVED the selfie bit (note the header image). I did like when Ellen made everyone chip in for the pizza though. Harvey Weinstein putting in $200…? Awesome.

*U2’s performance was good (and the song was good too) but I didn’t understand why they got a standing ovation. Were people standing for the late Nelson Mandela?

*Lupita Nyong’o winning the Oscar was pretty much perfection. I was so, so happy for her. Her speech was beautiful and it felt like everyone just has good feeling about Lupita in general.

*Pink’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was solid. I just hated her dress.

*Benedict Cumberbatch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His first Oscars and he was seated next to Angelina Jolie and he presented with Jennifer Garner and his voice was rich like honey. I LOVE HIM.

*Bette Midler sounded GREAT. The Wind Beneath My Wings. FLYYYYY. FLYYYY.

*I thought the worst song performance of the night was Idina Menzel doing “Let It Go” from Frozen. And that’s the song that won, so obviously I don’t know anything about music…? Some of you yelled at me on Twitter for being oblivious to what’s popular among young girls. That’s true – I didn’t see Frozen and I don’t have kids. But I thought the song was pretty weak. I was surprised U2 didn’t win.

*I was so pleased with the screenplay awards – Spike Jonze for Her and John Ridley for 12 Years a Slave. Both men were very deserving.

*You know what surprised me? That there were no surprises. Everyone said Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett would win and that’s what happened. There were no huge shocks. Personally, I loved Cate Blanchett’s speech, but most people are still talking about Lupita & Jared.

*Alfonso Cuaron won best director for Gravity, which was no big surprise. Gravity is an incredible technical achievement and Cuaron was on an incredible winning streak. Congrats to Alfonso!

*12 Years a Slave won Best Picture. Meaning that Brad Pitt is now an Oscar winning producer. How does that make you feel? I feel great about it. The one bad thing? Brad didn’t want to chip in more than $20 for the pizza. Cheap!

Thanks to everyone for blowing up my Twitter (and Bedhead & Celebitchy’s Twitter) last night. From my informal Twitter polling, it looks like everyone wants me to talk about Benedict Cumberbatch, Bill Murray and Lupita. DONE.

I know it’s b****y, but Lupita’s brother totally blocked Lupita and Angelina, forcing them in the background, and I was like “GET OUTTA THE WAY!!!!!”

Also it’s funny because in a somewhat straight line you have all the people that Angelina supposedly hates…Jennifer Lawrence (for stealing the SLP role), Julia Roberts (Julia thinks Angelina sucked in a Mighty Heart), and Lupita Nyongo (Brad Pitt going to cheat on her with Lupita).

    • Celia says:

There’s a gif of him running to join the selfie and you can see him pumping his head with Brad. Like he came as an Oscar date, ended up joining the most popular selfie of all time, blocking Angelina and driving his Oscar winning sister to the backgroud while headbutting Brad Pitt.

I mean what kind of legendary photo bombing is that. 🙂

    • Esmom says:

Funny. I didn’t watch last night and was wondering who the heck he was. I thought I’d missed a new Hollywood It Boy or something. He looks thrilled — I would be too!

    • Kimmy says:

Angie running to get in the selfie was adorable!!!! She looked so proud of Brad when he won.

Also Amy Adams, Lupita, and Meryl dancing with Pharrell was the most amazing thing ever.

Kevin Spacey is my best dressed man. His presentation was awesome with his House of Cards voice.

Cate told Julia to #suckit. I lost it!!!

      • Green Girl says:

For some reason, I had it in my head that Angelina Jolie was above pedestrian things like selfies. And yet there she was, being a great sport and getting in on the fun! I have gone from being indifferent to her to really liking her these last few months.

      • KB says:

Oh my gosh, I’ve always kind of walked the line with Jolie, sometimes I like her and sometimes I don’t, but last night she absolutely won me over. She was so enthusiastic about joining the selfie, it was adorable. And it completely threw that “ice queen” image out the window. She jumped up for it before Ellen even said her name and I love her now lol

    • Tulip Garden says:

Awww, see I liked Lupita’s brother! He’s young and excited, I smiled at his enthusiasm 🙂

      • Lucybelle says:

I liked him too! Thought his enthusiasm was adorable. I saw Lupita on Jimmy Fallon and she said her brother “lives in an exclamation point”! So cute!

      • V4Real says:

Yeah but his enthusiasm was blocking Lupita and Angie. 🙂

    • TC says:

I actually think Lupita’s brother is the best thing about the “selfie.” Loved his inclusion in it as the “non-celebrity.” I don’t think he blocked Angie. On the contrary, Angie blocked Angie when she put her hand up to wave. There was another photo that was taken with Angie’s hand resting on the shoulder of Lupita’s brother. You can see Angie and Lupita clearly in that version. I wished they would’ve used that one instead.

  2. Amelia says:

A who’s who of Hollywood in a selfie. Brilliant stuff.
And that photobomb from Cumby is PERFECTION. Is he standing on a step ladder, or what?

    • Mandy says:

He apparently was just jumping up and down to make sure he got in the picture….must have been very excitable! Adorbs!

  3. Nroth Wset says:

God i love Ellen..that selfie is the OUT OF THIS WORLD!nice.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

I thought Ellen was reslly really bad. Most people I talked to did too

      • sapphoandgrits says:

I thought she was just terrific.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Sappho…
I agree that Ellen was terrific. I liked that she was laid-back and unpretentious. To me, she added a degree of comfort and likeability while still keeping things moving and interesting…enough, anyway.
While everything she did, didn’t work at least there were no horribly cringe-worthy jokes at people’s expenses. To me, she solidified herself as extremely appropriate and star/viewer friendly last night.
I’ll admit I really liked Gervais too but it’s just an apples and oranges comedic style comparison.

      • Azurea says:

I agree — I thought she was just too Wonderbread. Only vaguly amusing most of the time. That gospel singer was awful & Bette wasn’t much better. The winners’ acceptance speeches were fabulous, though — not one cringeworthy note among them!

      • Samtha says:

I did too. I usually love Ellen, but the whole thing fell flat for me. It seemed awkward and forced.

      • idk says:

I think Ellen was good, but she was playing it safe. She has a talk show remember, and probably doesn’t want to offend any celebs.

Also, I guess we can put all those “Jessica Biel pregnancy” rumors to rest. It’s been months since anyone’s seen her. Was she filming a movie or something?

      • pru says:

I think something was off with the direction. All the cues coming off of commercial breaks were late.

      • hmmm says:

That schtick with the pizza and the selfies was cliquish, boring and annoying as all get out. So much self-indulgent filler. The actors responded like trained monkeys. The great and powerful Ellen, indeed. It was jarring.

      • atrain says:

Agreed – I thought everything was a little awkward and obnoxious. I like her, but I don’t think she did a good job at all.

      • Esmom says:

“The actors responded like trained monkeys. The great and powerful Ellen, indeed. It was jarring.”

If I’m not mistaken, the Oscars aren’t improv but a highly rehearsed production. So they weren’t “responding” to her, they were following the cues/lines they were given, I’d say.

  4. Kaylah says:

I’m so happy Lupita won. Her speech was amazing, gosh I love her. For the longest time I’ve been trying to see what’s so great & lovely about Benedict Cumberbatch, still haven’t seen it. Ellen was fun, she wasn’t OTT & she wasn’t a hot mess like Anne Hathaway & James Franco. Can’t believe Steve McQueen is the first Black director to win a best picture award. I’m astounded by that. Am I the only person that saw Fassy & McQueen full on kiss when 12YAS won? That was cute.

Kaiser, make a fashion post. I want to vent about Kerry Washington’s bobby pin dress.

    • Aurie says:

I didn’t know that about McQueen being the first black director to win best picture……..just like Katherine Bigelow is the first woman to win best picture for the Hurt Locker.

And both movies ended up being the two lowest grossing best picture winners of all time (when adjusted for inflation).

    • Crank says:

I have a love hate relationship with Cumby. I personally think he looks much hotter as a blonde guy. Anyway, I was hoping for some surprise wins from Amy and Leo and Gravity, but I’m happy for all that won.

  5. Fangirl says:

This was awesome!!! OMG !!! Cumberbatch was playful ( 2 photobombs that we know of ! ) , jeesh ! Lovely to watch ! Yes, if Ben was in on the pic it would have been perfect !

  6. Adrien says:

My favorite parts were Naomi Watts and Laurence Fishburne presenting some award and Adela Dazeem’s performance. And oh, Lupita nyong’o thanking John Bobbit in her speech.

    • Leah says:

It wasn’t Adela Dazeem though but Idina Menzel. Travolta messed up her name in the worst kind of way. 😔

    • GeeMoney says:

Oh no… that was Naomi and Samuel L. Jackson! He’s going to come out of the woodworks and get you for calling him Laurence Fishburne…

    • Kimble says:

I see what you did there 😉 Seems I might be the only one though …

  7. yael says:

i don’t know… i thought the show was pretty dull and lackluster. there were some funny bits, but for the most part i was bored and uninterested. and i’m saying this as someone who LOVES watching the oscars and who adores ellen.

    • pretty says:

i didn’t enjoy Ellen at all. it was cringe-worthy and awkward and boring. it’s because *she* didn’t seem like she’s enjoying hosting the oscars, she kept butchering names , sentences and just the tone of it all were.. meh

      • JudyK says:

Normally, I love Ellen but I thought she was off and awkward last night, and the pizza thing was dumb, not funny. Thought the Oscars started at 8:00 p.m. and missed the first 30 minutes which was probably the best part.

      • V4Real says:

Serving pizza at the Oscares were like she was copying what they did at the Golden Globes when they served burgers.

      • V4Real says:

Correction. The People’s Choice Award. Kat Dennings handed out Cheeseburgers and it’s like Ellen or the producers of the Oscars said let’s do what they did at The People’s Choice and serve food to the sudience.

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA and I normally love watching the Oscars. I found Ellen to be downright embarrassing at times, there were absolutely no surprises (Awards-wise) and – Kim Novak aside – nothing particularly gossip worthy happened either.

I am happy that Lupita won but was anyone shocked? Nope.

    • Isan says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one, compared to last year this event was dull and bland. I hope next year we will see a presenter more in the style of Ricky Gervais or Seth MacFarlane again, because imo the funniest moments come from Oscars hosts who are not afraid to stir things up with the (awful) truth.

      • Jess says:

Ugh. I like Family Guy but I thought Seth was lame – and I don’t mind those who shake it up. I thought Ellen was great. Only hosts who are better – Tina and Amy!

      • MCM says:

I agree- Tina and Amy would be wonderful. There was nothing about Ellen’s hosting that stood out to me. Except for that fact that my sister and I were competing to see who got the most correct guesses for the winners, I was ready to turn off the TV by the time the pizza showed up. It was funny at first, and then it got boring, and then it just got awkward.

    • Kiddo says:

I tried to watch the E pre-Oscar coverage, that was a mess. I watched very little at the beginning of the Oscar show, and couldn’t take it. It sounds like my decision was a wise one. I figured I’d come here today to see who won.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I thought the show was endless, sheer torture with a few great moments and the red carpet coverage beforehand was just awful. I want to see the dresses and actors, not listen to mindless babble. I love Ellen, but thought she fell a little flat.

    • Decloo says:

The pizza thing fell flat and just seemed to never end. The selfie thing was dumb too, especially as Ellen was shoving that new iPad/phone brand down our throats. Don’t know what brand it was but I’m pretty sure it was the same one in the commercials that played over and over again throughout the show.

  8. LP says:

Man, I felt bad for Idina. The orchestra was really rushing Let It Go and that last note…oof, she looked upset at the end.

    • Kaylah says:

She was SO offkey! Jesus. I haven’t seen Frozen so I was expecting to be blown away and I was just in shock. That performance was incredibly bad.

      • ParisPucker says:

Glad i wasn’t the only one who was thinking that!! Then someone explain to me plz, why there was a standing ovation?!?

    • Crank says:

She’s never really sounded great live honestly. Look up the Tonys performance of Defying Gravity, she totally cracks at the end. I still she’s a great singer, but she often just doesn’t sound great live.

      • LP says:

I totally agree. I was hoping she’d do better this time because there’d be less belt :/

      • Lindy79 says:

Apparently she had an asthma attack right before the Tony performance, I’d read that on a few sites

Not sure what the deal was with the Oscars though, she looked gutted 🙁

    • ToodySezHey says:

Yeah, I wrote on FB after Idina’s performance ” Not that she performed badly but…what key was that in exactly?” She was all over the place and out of sync with the orchestra.

Definitely not her best, and downright subpar for a broadway singer.

    • kibbles says:

I’ve been hearing this song everywhere. I like the song and the many covers of it. Idina is a very good singer, so I was shocked how bad she sounded at the Oscars. I’m sure Idina must be very disappointed by her performance. She’s a much better singer in general than what she showed the world last night. This is her most famous song to date. The orchestra was really rushing it. It would have sounded better had they done the original version which is nearly 4 minutes long. It also looked like she was a bit nervous? I mean, I thought there would be more theatrics and a better dress for her, like, a copy of the sparkly dress her character wore in the movie.

    • L says:

Yea I think the orchestra being in another building was a big problem. They were playing it WAY to fast, at about 1 1/2 time, and they cut out the middle section (which wasn’t rehearsed apparently). She was trying to catch up to help with her phrasing and her breath control and she wasn’t able to do it.

Not to mention that Travolta butchered her name in front of millions of people right before coming on stage-that has to mess with you.

  9. pretty says:

omg john travolta butchering her name. so freaking hilarious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sliDVeMksjU he enunciated every word perfectly except her name. hahahaha

    • LP says:

That ridiculous enunciation of “wickedly”. We got it, John. We got it.

    • icerose says:

Very happy for Lupita and 12 years but sad for Chiwetel but at least the Bafta’s got it right.
The rest were predictable although I was glad Americain Huslte did not win as it was by far the most boring overacted film I have seen for ages. I was very impressed by complex performance Micheal Fassbender gave in 12 years but I knew he did not stand a chance,
I was following a neutral thread which said Benedict’s organiser or what ever he/she was called was being pushy on the red carpet but did not explain further. I saw a selfie of Ellen with Chiwetel and Benedict was bent forward with his hand on Chiwetel’s shoulder but it got lost in the twitter frenzy of the one with a lot of the better known stars. Chiwetel just seemed content to just let it all happen around him which is what I love about him.
Benedict did manage to get some brief attention on twitter with his photo bomb which I assume was the intention. He also gave a very political interview on the red carpet about how there was just as much slavery today in the form of sweatshops etc but as the interviewer was all about the fashion and the fluff it kind of felt a bit earnest.
Best photo bomb was Kevin Spacy’s slightly creepy smile at the back in the big selfie and I loved Ellen’s take on the ball gown.

      • Shiv says:

Brief attention?? It was the third most commented incident of the Oscars based on trends/internet mentions.

Absolutely agree about American Hustle – so overrated.

Really wanted Chiwetel to win but McCon apparently had it in the bag (haven’t seen Dallas Buyers Club yet…)

      • Mandy says:

I am not sure if it was the same interview as you are referring to, but Benedict was also mentioning that TYAS needs to be included more in American school curriculum because it is a shame that few had heard of the book before the movie was made. It didn’t seem go over well with Ryan Seacrest who was doing the interviewing. As a history enthusiast I was glad he brought it up though.

    • Samantha25 says:

Travolta was so bizarre. He didn’t even mispronounce her name, it was a completely different name. Maybe it was a teleprompter mistake.

      • QQ says:

That was INSANE!! (As was his Formal Wig! And the Nasal ass lady who sang!) But wtf was it with all these poor ass reading celebs!! It was like Ann Curry at the Today Show

      • Decloo says:

His eyes were like tiny slits. Maybe he was medicated?

    • Lindy79 says:

      “Adele Dazeem”…Oh my god…

It sounds exactly like when you can’t pronounce something…you mumble and lower the tone. Its like Kristen Wiig speaking “Spanish” in Bridesmaids.

    • tifzlan says:

How the hell did he go from ‘wic-ked-ly’ to ‘Adele Dazeem’ like how does anyone mess up IDINA for Adele?!?!?!?! Maybe it was the teleprompter.

    • kibbles says:

Wow. That is horrible. Imagine how Idina must have felt. Not a good way to start off her performance, which also ended up being kind of a disaster. Not a good night for Idina!

  10. JoAnn says:

It looks a fun Oscars. I love U2 but they ate a bit stuffy so Benedict photo bombing made my year.

  11. Jade says:

Maybe we watched a different show but Ellen was horrible and cringe-worthy. She couldn’t pronounce names and looked like she couldn’t even be bothered trying which was pretty rude. The little jokes went flat. She had no real presence on screen.

“I’m sitting in Zac Efron’s seat because he’s going to be on stage so here’s Zac Efron…”

Really?? They paid her for this gig?

But then again I never found her to be funny or entertaining anyway and this is just another example. I almost feel sorry for her but can this be her last year please….

    • Decloo says:

I thought she killed it with the Liza Minelli/Sir joke, though.

      • Lamb says:

Ooh, I felt like that was the most awkward moment that only got an uncomfortable laugh. It felt really mean too! It was also mean when she was yelling at the old woman from Nebraska.

  12. emmie_a says:

I think every live song got a standing ovation so why was it strange for U2 to also get a standing ovation?

I thought Jared Leto’s speech was too dramatic. Cate’s speech was great. I am the only person who doesn’t think Lupita is all that – She seems nice & I’m happy she won but that’s about it. I loved Ellen and I thought the pizza bit was cute. I liked how much Ellen interacted w/the audience and kept things casual. I hope she hosts again.

    • Lily says:

I agree I think Ellen was great. Ppl are mistaking her creating a relaxed atmosphere for boring. Those on here saying she didn’t go after the celebs enough don’t know her style she was never going to be that kind of host

  13. Gracie says:

The best moment was Bill Murray giving a shoutout to Harold Ramis (who just passed away this week) while he was presenting an award with Amy Adams.

“And Harold Ramis for Caddyshack, Gostbusters, and Groundhog Day.”

    THE BEST.

  14. QQ says:

    My Impressions:

Ellen was Fun even if: WTF was that Velvet Tuxedo with a Cravat!?

I thought Pizza was awesome, i wondered if They really ate it this being Hollywood and all!

Jesus Ombre Leto Shouted out Venezuela so I’m contractually obligated to say nothing bad about him.

Huzzah for Lupita and 12 Years a Slave! WHOOo!! ( Variety Twitter person needs to suck a bag of dick for that “Slave Actress Lupita Nyong’o Wins” Tweet!)

Matthew McConawhatever Is officially like a Drunk pastor

None of the dresses Gave me a Boner But Charlize Theron was close, Honorable mention to Pharrell and His Tall lady for bucking couples trends

There will be no slander of Pink or Karen O Ever

That lady that presented with McConnawhat? Looked like she was melting and having a stroke at the same time, who was she?

    • emmie_a says:

Matthew M = drunk pastor. YES. I feel sorry for his friends & family who have to listen to him all the time.

…But I thought he was quite the gentleman when he was presenting w/Kim Novak. He did a great job of guiding her, which she desperately needed.

    • Esmom says:

Thank you. I didn’t get to watch the show so unlike most recaps, your rundown gives me some juicy bits. And much needed laughs!

    • Shantal says:

“I thought Pizza was awesome, i wondered if They really ate it this being Hollywood and all!”

      They did…
      http://www.elle.com/news/culture/oscars-pizza-party

    • Val says:

lol @ the drunk pastor!! 😀 I felt really awkward and uncomfortable watching him pointing and talking about god… he looked a little crazed.

  15. Anne says:

I hope Cumbby was also in that selfie!!!!!

  16. Lindy79 says:

    The U2 photobomb was everything!
Apparently he was asked by a friend to get a selfie with Bono as a dare..and this is what he did.
How can you not love that!?

    • Anne says:

He really looked happy at the red carpet! Enjoying all the frenzy! Well done Photobomb King Cumbby!

    • Mandy says:

Love that he did it on a dare if that was the case…glad he had a good time! No need to take it all too seriously!

    • pru says:

Cumby was so cute last night. The photobomb and crying during Lupita’s speech. Like I needed an excuse to love him more!

  17. paola says:

It seems like I’ve seen a completely different show last night. I thought it was a snoozefest and Ellen, which I love, was cringeworthy and apart from the monologue at the beginning it felt like she was improvising and came up with pizzas just to prove the audience was still alive.
I think Ellen is great on a 45 mins show, but not at the Oscars.

Almost all the presenters struggled trying to read their lines, I mean, If they can’t read it just put the damn thing closer!!!!

    • ToodySezHey says:

I agree, Ellen was so boring. 2 minutes in and I was like “somebody call Tina and Amy!!!”

the highlights were the pizza( brad pitt handing out paper plates gave me LIFE) and Epic Selfie.

And yeah, I was cringing watching Sidney Poitier trying to read the teleprompter. Angie did her best to kind of prompt him and it was a little sad to see.

that said is it me or is brad pitt the hottest 50 yr old on the planet? Brad looked fuvcking HOT last night

    • Diana says:

Yeah, I usually love her but this was not her finnest night. And it’s weird becasue the last time she did it she was so funny! this time there were some moments where it was great but the night was mostly a snooze fest. I was expecting much better and considering I got up at 2 a.m. to be able to watch and went to work after the ceremony I’m feeling a major let down

  18. windy says:

The cumberbatch U2 photobomb made my day truly lol

  19. LadySlippers says:

    Question for y’all.

Did anyone wear Valentino? Or was the line politely frozen out after the ‘Amy Adams wearing Valentino at PSH’s wake’ fiasco?

    • Esmom says:

Ooh…good question. This inquring mind wants to know, too.

*Off to see if I can find out*

    • AG-UK says:

Yes Olivia Wilde was in Valentino

      • Mia4S says:

Ah, so “no one” did where Valentino then. 😉

Sorry, I’m tired and the show was dull. Bless Bill Murray though.

      • LadySlippers says:

Really? And she looked AWESOME too.

But Anne wasn’t in Valentino and isn’t that her go-to designer?

  20. AG-UK says:

It’s always a snooze fest thankfully I am 8 hours ahead and just tape it and fast forward thru the bits I don’t want to be bothered with. Here they will do a 90 minute recap of the show. I’d had to win my award at the beginning then you have to sit there and look interested for 3 more hours. It’s just too long.

    • Jayna says:

It’s too long, but this isn’t just about acting or directing. The Oscars is about the art of filmmaking and all of the people who are part of that industry in bringing a movie to life. This is their moment whether we care or not.

  21. Esmom says:

Sounds like a solid show to me. I like Ellen’s kindness and goofiness so I don’t think I would have been bored had I been able to watch.

One question based on these photos: was Liza Minelli even lucid or was that face part of the joke?

    • MrsBPitt says:

I don’t know if Liza was acting or not, but she looked pissed when Ellen was talking about her being the best Liza impersonater, and you look great, sir, etc.

    • Lucy2 says:

I saw a brief moment of her on the red carpet posing for photos, and she looked like she was having a bit of trouble moving easily. I think she might be having more health problems. I hope she’s doing ok, and I loved her blue streak in her hair.

In the good old days (yes, I’m old), the Oscars were something special…you got to see your fav actors dressed to the nines, and you never knew who was going to win. Now, with awards season starting months before the Oscars, and the same people nominated, the same people winning, the same speeches, over and over and over…honestly,, by the time the Oscars arrive, its so damn predictable, I really don’t give a fig…We all know who is going to win…the Hollywood ass kissing season really needs to be shorter…

    • Esmom says:

So true. But I have to say I do like the online coverage afterwards (even before to get myself up to speed) since no one I know in real life likes to commiserate about this stuff with me. So I can obsess all I want without disturbing my friends and family, lol.

But here’s a question — is it the industry that’s responsible for this? Or the media and us consumers who feed the media frenzy? I tend to think this “extended awards season” is more a reflection of how our culture of celeb worship has escalated with the help of 24/7 media saturation than anything that the industry itself has done. I don’t know.

      • Kimmy says:

@ ESMOM, exactly how I feel! No one I know enjoys it like I do, so the Monday after the internet is the best place ever!!

That being said, Ellen was exactly what they wanted…friendly and inoffensive.

  23. Lucy2 says:

Overall i thought it was ok but very predictable. I think Ellen did ok- the selfie was great but the pizza bit went on way too long- though I loved Kerry Washington’s reaction to the mention of pizza. Travolta was the worst moment of the night though.

  24. feebee says:

I’m not going to bag Ellen because hosting the Oscars is hard and it’s really a lose-hard to win situation. She did okay. I had enough laugh out loud moments. Some of the audience bits fell flat and I wasn’t sure why she had so many slip ups with names. Seeing as the ceremony ran almost 30 minutes late, those audience bits (selfie aside) could have been much shorter/less of them.

Some found her boring, so maybe they overcorrected after Seth ‘i can see your boobs’ MacFarlane last year. I prefer the edgy comedy but he was just terrible.

Unfortunately no surprises but I too (with Lindy79) wondered about the McQueen/Ridley thing, it was so weird he hugged David O Russell on way to stage and blanked his own director.

Cate Blanchett’s mention of women-led films not being niche and people want to see them – outstanding! Didn’t even mind that she thanked Woody Allen for the screenplay and choosing her. I noticed the audience was confused about how much to clap when his nomination was announced.

  25. Mia4S says:

Weird thing: apparently Chris Evans was not supposed to be the presenter of that superhero montage (which was beyond dumb). It was supposed to be Andrew Garfield. I hope he’s just sick and it’s nothing more serious.

    • idk says:

What really? I like Andrew ! I didn’t understand the point of the superhero montage…it didn’t lead in to anything. They just showed it and then moved on to the next thing.

  26. Dedre says:

How annoyed must Miley Cyrus be that she’s not in this…

  27. rtms says:

Studio version of Let it Go with Indina is a much better version! For some reason a seasoned Broadway actress simply got too nervous and screwed up her song. It happens I guess but I felt bad for her as her performance was the only one that sucked.

  28. sapphoandgrits says:

Jared’s and Lupita’s speeches made me cry. They were just lovely.

I thought Ellen was terrific — she did what they wanted her to do. And, skits like the pizza thing are done so they can set up the stage and for other logistical reasons. I actually thought that was funny, especially Brad Pitt handing out paper plates and napkins.

  29. queenfreddiemercury says:

The thing I never understand about AA is how they can waste 4 hours and rush the last major categories to the last minutes. Every year. The most important categories should me given more time. But anywho I liked the selfie.

I thought Ellen did a nice job though. I still want some Pizza. 🙁

  30. ashley says:

Ellen did great, but that’s just my opinion.

  31. cc says:

Girl, you need to watch Frozen!

Can’t stop laughing at Benedict photobombing U2 xD

  32. Shiv says:

    My favourite parts….

Lupita winning; what a beautiful sophisticated woman. Very humble.

    Benedict crying at Lupita’s speech.

    The Selfie.

I really hope Benedict doesn’t become TOO Hollywood. I can see it happening though….

  33. yennefer says:

I hope I’ll live to the day when Ricky Gervais will host the Oscars.

  34. Tiffany says:

Kaiser. The outfit I think jibed with the song, video and promotion. Pharell would have looked seriously out of place with everyone else. I was dancing through the entire thing although I really wish they would have done scheduled it later in the show as it kind of dragged music wise afterwards.

    • idk says:

I agree, his outfit went with his song…it made sense. Did anyone see what he wore on the red carpet? A tux with shorts…Lanvin shorts though…but still shorts. He’s a unique dude and I like the fact he wears whatever he wants.

  35. Grant says:

“Let It Go” is a great song, but Idina was NOT in great voice last night. They sped the song up and I don’t think she could keep up. Plus, she sounded strained and shouty when going for the big notes. I think she knew this too because she didn’t look happy with her performance. I thought Pink was fine but I honestly thought she had a better voice than that. I’ve heard MUCH better renditions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Karen O… I don’t get it. I feel like anyone can do what she does. We criticize Britney for dancing around a stage and miming but Karen O basically sat still and whispered into a microphone. Is that what’s in now?

    • hannah says:

The Moon Song doesn’t really lend itself to dancing around, in my opinion. I thought her performance fit perfectly.

    • Lauraq says:

I thought Pink killed it EXCEPT I hated how she kept resting in the middle of words. Ew.
And I love the song Let it Go but I think Idina sounded like she was straining for those notes even in the movie.

  36. Size Does Matter says:

Oh the thought of trying to eat pizza in my priceless Oscar finery makes me queasy.

  37. Lucy says:

I can honestly say I haven’t had this much fun waching the Oscars in quite a while. Ellen was fantastic!!!

  38. Megan says:

This was the best show in years! I loved all of it. I thought the pizza bit was great, I LOVED the selfie and I am extremely happy with the winners especially in supporting.

It can’t be said enough Jard Castalano has an OSCAR!!! So does the wonderful Lupita.

  39. Meggin says:

I thought Ellen did a good job. You can tell she was tired towards the end though LOL. But who wouldn’t be? I wasn’t a fan at all of the “Let It Go” performance… but I might be the only one. I just thought it didn’t sound as good as it did in the movie. It was kind of just meh. Pink’s performance was amazing though.

  40. Ennie says:

Hahahaha, I remember Brad saying that for their wedding he was in charge of the napkins! and here he was giving them away along with the paper plates!
he was such a good sport yesterday, he had a great evening.

  41. Jake says:

My strategy for handling the Oscars is pretty basic and I’m sure quite common, I just sort of keep an eye on it, and an ear – I do other stuff, and go over to the TV when something potentially interesting is coming up. I manage to catch about 75 percent of the decent stuff. I missed most of the pizza thing last night but caught the selfie (excellent! Clearly rehearsed, however), the major awards, and the general vibe. So let’s see. I was not impressed with Ellen. She did not win that audience to her side, but it’s a tough crowd, which is to say, too tense and insecure to chill. I was once again amazed by the general inability of Hollywood performers to relax and eschew pomposity (for example, Will Smith). I was not impressed with John Travolta’s low wattage brain. I WAS impressed with Sidney Poitier and Angie (has anyone noted that TYAS is a sort of culmination of everything Poitier stands for?), and with Cate, and with the staging of the Wizard of Oz thing, with the big dress against the big screen. I was fascinated by the total bitterness of Christian Bale in a fleeting short toward the end when it was clear his vehicle was going to be shut out – he looked ready to kill. I can just imagine him thinking like an actor – “I wanna remember this feeling, I can use it someday.”

  42. rep says:

Loved Pharrel’s prrformance. Not a fan of selfies, so I did not get the excitement. Photobombing in my book is rude, not funny. Guess I’m getting old. Oh poor Sydney, he was so fragile, I would not have put him up to presenting. Hell the healthy actors were having trouble reading. The pizza bit was meh

  43. lisa2 says:

I really enjoyed Ellen. I think she did a great job on a difficult show. The problem with the Oscars is that they don’t get to the awards that people actually want to see until the very end. This show seemed to last forever. They didn’t do Best Supporting until well into an hour. And I hate how they give the early winners time to ramble on forever; then when the final awards are reached it feels rushed.

I have to say I loved and respected how patient Angie was with the GREAT Mr. Poitier. He had a difficult time walking out; she never rushed him. And when he had problems reading the prompter; she didn’t embarrass him; but took over in such a respectful way. Matthew was the same with Kim Novak. Everyone ages.. it is how we are treated that makes the journey bearable.

I for one don’t care to see Ricky G. do this kind of show. I don’t think it is appropriate to ridicule people when they are being honored for their work. Even if it is Hollywood. Do that at a roast; not an celebration of work.

  44. Anoni Mus says:

Meh, I don’t know… on the one hand, there were some great moments (Lupitas speech, Benedict, Kevin Spacey, Pink and Pharrells performances, and dare I say, the Selfie), but there was also a lot of uncomfortable, awkward stuff for my taste. I thougt Ellen really bombed, she was mean and rude in her “jokes” to Squibb, Minelli and others. And handing out pizza at the Oscars? I guess I’m getting old, but I hated that. All I could think about was poor Sidney Poitier and what he would think of something like that. And then there was a lot of flubbing of lines and errors, a bit unprofessional.
The In Memoriam brought a tear to my eye. So many greats gone.

  45. LAK says:

Bring back Billy Crystal. All is forgiven.

  46. Lana says:

I was kind of indifferent about Angelina Jolie before, but she really won me over last night. She was just so classy and elegant when she was walking out with Sidney Poitier, it was amazing.
Lupita’s speech was so beautiful, I almost cried. I’m so happy she won!
I thought Pink’s performance was great. Idina Menzel was fine, she’s usually better.
Btw, It’s my first time commenting, but I’ve been reading the site for awhile, and love it!

  47. mojoman says:

When I heard Travolta introduced the singer as Adele Daseem I swear the first thing popped in my head was, “I didn’t know Adele (the grammy award one) has a last name and is she singing FROZEN now?”
