Julia Roberts in black lace Givenchy at the Oscars: widow-fug or sort of cute?

FFN_Oscars_Arrivals_A6_030214_51344701

OMG, I thought Julia Roberts was one of the worst-dressed women of the night. I also thought that she probably didn’t give a crap, and I have to give her a slow-clap for not making everything about JULIA. Julia attended the Oscars because she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Julia hasn’t won anything this whole awards season, so she went into the evening knowing that she wasn’t going to win the Oscar. So, this dress is sort of “I’m just here because I’m nominated and I wanted to be comfortable.” Also, she’s blonde now. That was like the last thing I noticed, that’s how hideous this dress is.

Still, this Givenchy was bad. Really, really bad. The black lace is very “Italian widow” and it’s also really derivative of what Dolce & Gabbana was doing a few years ago, so once again: Riccardo Tisci is an awful designer. The peplum ruins everything it touches, and there’s no built-in support in the dress, so Julia’s boobs look sort of… blah, whatever. The whole thing just looked really cheap, which, obviously, is how most Givenchy gowns look these days. What in the world is happening to the House of Givenchy? Lord.

I also thought Jessica Biel – in Chanel – was one of the worst-dressed women of the Oscars. It could have been a boringly average glittery tube dress (there were 20 million of those on the red carpet), but it really felt like the dress was unfinished. The lining seemed budget. And what was with the stupid ruffle on the top? And why did it seem like it was just a fraction too tight on her? And why was she even invited to present?! Last thing: her limp hair kept falling in her face and she touched her weave more times than Duchess Kate. Which is never a good sign. Even a blah chignon would have been better than this nothing hairstyle.

    Ugh her dress was awful.

Her face looks good though and she actually seemed to have fun. So yay

    • nan says:

Agree, yucky dress choice but face & body looked good and that’s a big plus. Her arms, which aren’t her best feature usually, look amazing. She’s clearly been working very hard at her looks these days and well she should, since she’s top box office.

      • Smith says:

Yes I was coming to say the same thing about her arms, nice. In general she has less of the duck-billed platypus look that she’s had in the past so that’s a big win.

And in keeping with the arm theme of this comment, yes the dress was awful but at least she “shaved.”

Now I don’t want to start a whole back-and-forth over whether or not a woman should shave. I’m going to just leave it at, you’re wearing a gown, you’re having an elegant, fancy evening …shave.

If you need too, you can hair up again the next day.

    • Decloo says:

I wondered how Julia felt about sitting in the (gasp) SECOND row behind all those other actors and their lowly moms and/or siblings.

      • Delorb says:

The old Julia would have bitten their heads off so she could see the stage. The new Julia, not so much.

  2. Janet says:

I thought Jessica Biel’s dress was lovely and it fit her perfectly. One of the best looks of the night.

Poor Julia Roberts was something else again.

    • JudyK says:

      Agree that Jessica was outstanding.

Julia’s dress looks like it’s from the 80s and even then I would have found it ugly. Hate the way she dresses, but, as someone else said, looked like she was having a good time.

    • Alina says:

yes, Jessica looks wow, the only thing i dislike is the wide hem. Otherwise she looks elegant and her body is amazing.
Calling her one of the worst-dressed women is madness, but not surprising. Jessica isn´t much loved on this side. When you look at f.e. Angelina Jolie´s terrible granny dress and all the praise for it you know the “style criticism” here has not much to do with the dresses 😉

  3. Marigold says:

There were a lot of bra issues last night. Too many women were riding low. Julia was the worst, though. Christ, she could have worn a standard bra with that dress but chose not to. God knows why…

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I could not agree with you more. Low riders galore.

      • Sassy says:

When I saw the dress, I said to myself – “why, why doesn’t she wear a bra. The design was so unflattering to her. It appeared that there were no bust darts and the top just poofed out over the poofy peblum. Very bad dress.

    • Scarlet Vixen says:

Thank goodness I’m not the only one who noticed the saggy boob epidemic last night! It was like everyone-young or old-specifically WANTED their boobs near their elbows…

  4. chloe says:

I’ll say this much about Julia, it’s not the worse thing she’s worn, but why does she dye her hair blonde, it makes her look washed out. I thought she would be demure on the carpet, but nope she had to start calling herself fabulous and every time Ellen would talk to Meryl, l Julia would have to lean over and touch her and get into frame.

    • megandraper says:

Awful dress. The lace insert looks tacky. Just too much. She must’ve had it added. Her hair is terrible. I though she looked washed out also.

      • Sandy says:

The lace insert made her look like she had a chest tattoo. And I never saw anyone more desperate to get into the frame of every picture. Like she’s trying to stay relevant, but she knows she’s not. And for someone who lost a family member two weeks ago, she does look awfully ebullient!

      • Crank says:

@Sandy: her family member died way more than two weeks ago. Plus I’d never judge howa person acts or looks after someone has died, you don’t know what kind of internal emotions that person is going through, and smiling/looking ‘ebullient’ may be her way of getting through it, or she could be having a nice time for the first time since the death…we don’t know and it’s not our business. Sorry but your comment ticks me off really bad!

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Crank,
I agree. There’s just no way no know what is going thru someone’s heart and mind after the loss of a loved one. Plus, Julia’s sister appears not to have been a well woman, obviously, and that makes it even more tragic. Anyway, regardless of how Julia actually feels, which we don’t know, it seems especially unkind to fault her for enjoying herself last nite if she did. I hope she did anyway and I am not a Julia Roberts fan.

      • Sandy says:

Julia always has the same flashing-teeth smile everywhere she goes because it is her trademark look, and she’s trying to get jobs in Hollywood. Duh! She’s not smiling to “get through” anything. People were shocked she was on the Vanity Fair cover because she’s not that relevant a movie star, and the fact that she won NO awards this season shows that people don’t think much of her acting. If she had a brain in her head, or a heart, she would have tempered the job-hunting a bit. Oh, and I guess 3 weeks ago is “way more” than two weeks ago! Sorry!!!!

      • Crank says:

@sandy: and yet you’re still acting like a jerk. Guessing you’ve never had a death in the family.
It seems like over a month ago to me, that’s an oversight on my part. Still, stop acting like she should be acting like widow in mourning.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Sandy,
As I stated earlier, I am no Julia Roberts fan and, at times, I actively dislike her but I don’t believe she has earned the vitriol.
One, yes, she (and all of them) try to get jobs in Hollywood. That is where they work. Why shade her for it? She’s not allowed to because of a family death?
Two, yes, she appeared to be having fun. It is allowed even if she is grieving and sometimes, especially if one is grieving. Although she may not give a hoot (which I doubt), she is still allowed to enjoy herself whether because she is or because she knows her job.
Three, she has been nominated for an Oscar. That alone makes her relevant. As to whether she deserved the nomination, that’s always debatable. IMO, she was very good in “August….”.
Lastly, I really don’t like her very much. There are times though when regardless of that, I don’t think it’s fair to shade a public person. This is one of those times to me. Obviously you don’t feel the same.

      • Sandy says:

It’s a question of degree. Should she be a widow in mourning? No. Should she be the life of the party? I guess you think it’s fine. I just find her constant “look at me” poses and faces annoying, and in this instance, inappropriate.

      • OriginalLee says:

@Sandy – please allow me to shed some light on this situation. My brother committed suicide two days before Julia’s sister did. It has been an agonizing experience. There is no right, wrong, appropriate, or inappropriate way to cope. If Julia wants to smile and laugh and feel like her old self again, then good for her. Everyone copes differently.

Odds are Julia is trying to find her footing again. I know I am. The guilt I feel when I laugh is overwhelming and I don’t have the world watching and scrutinizing my every move. Everyone seems to feel like they have the right to tell someone how they should act after a death, in this specific case after a suicide. Processing the suicide of a family member is a whole other beast, than processing a natural death or even an unexpected death. There are whole layers of processing a suicide that you cannot imagine until you are a member of the “suicide survivors club”.

This is her job. When I eventually go back to the work, I will have to act work appropriate as well. Julia is acting the same way at work that she always has. There is probably even a degree of comfort for her knowing that not every part of her life has been irrecoverably altered by her sister’s death.

Compassion people. It’s not that hard.

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @Original Lee,
Very sorry for your loss and the circumstances surrounding it. I hope you find peace and healing. Sometimes forgiveness is the most difficult concept to wrestle with, for ourselves and our departed loved ones. I hope it will not offend you if I wish you Godspeed in dealing with this tragic loss.

      • Delorb says:

        @Sandy,
When I suffered a huge loss, I didn’t show how I was feeling to others. I kept it privately to myself. Just the way I chose to deal with my pain. I didn’t tamp it down. I let it flow, but only in private. One can’t tell others how to act or react. We are all different.

Her dress, however, was awful. I can’t believe all the talking heads are complementing her on it. That and Angie were two of the worse of the night for me. Angie can be a bit thick around the middle (she’s very boxy). She should never, ever, wear a dress that shows that off.

I wasn’t liking Lupita’s dress, until she moved in it. Lovely. I could never wear it, though. Talk about the land of sagging boobs. LOL

      • OriginalLee says:

@Tulip Garden – thank you for your kind words. I truly appreciate them.

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

@Sandy being ebullient can be a way of dealing with grief – it’s like you keep yourself in bubbles so the grief can’t get at you. Like keeping yourself in a state of artificial joy so that you can cope with everyday things around you and being extra ‘high’ can help offset that overpowering sadness.

  5. lassie says:

At least it looks like Julia shaved her armpits. I distinctly remember the money shot of her ‘Erin Brockovich’ era Oscar run where she was on some red carpet and showed her unshaven pits. We Americans like our sweethearts with shaven pits.

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Wasn’t that why Brad left Jennifer? She refused to let him lick her armpitts and also to shave them. Angelina was more down with the armpitt licking and also had hers waxed, which turned out to be the Pitt’s for Jennifer.

  6. Esmom says:

I thought Julia’s dress was horrendous and unflattering. Hair, too, although her makeup looks good. I was looking at that promotional photo from August and she looks so pretty in it with her long straight hair and natural look that this Oscar getup looks silly in comparison, like a linebacker in drag or something. She also seems a bit tipsy from what I can gather in photos but I guess I can give her a pass for that. 🙂

    • Liberty says:

Unflattering dress, I agree. This weird loose boob shaping of the bodice — bad design. It’s the kind of shape I can see working on a waif-thin 16 year old model or an Olsen twin, under a coat, in the winter, once. Or maybe on a Sofia Vergara who might change the way it hangs, like a 1960s Italian vavoom look. But, no, still it’s overall sort of ugly. It’s like, this guy got a job in design and knows nothing about the bodies of women, or movement, or color or detail or pattern or…..I just don’t get it.

PS — Did I miss it, or did no one wear one of those eye-stabbing Marchesa gowns?

      • mayamae says:

I pay very little attention to fashion, so I can’t say if anyone wore Marchesa. I’ve heard frequent rumors that Harvey Weinstein likes to strong arm actresses to wear his wife’s designs. No idea if it’s true.

  7. blue marie says:

Just like her acting, Jessica Biel is blah.
    Julia’s dress is awful.

  8. emmie_a says:

I’m sure both dresses cost thousands and thousands of dollars but they were two of the cheapest looking dresses of the night.

    • Liberty says:

      x 100000

Cheap. That’s it. So cheap-looking, from the fabric to the cut to the random-ass detailing on Julia’s and the sort of not-smooth. twisted look of the drape of Jessica’s gown.

  9. Lucy2 says:

Terrible dress, especially in close up when you can see the texture of the material. Possibly with everything going on in her family she didn’t have much time for picking a dress though.
I generally like silvery sparkly gowns but didn’t like Biel’s at all.

  10. Kiddo says:

Without the doily, too much lace detail and exaggerated peplum, it might have worked. Hey, but at least it wasn’t a walking labia.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Are you referring to Paris Hilton’s pink vulvar birthday dress from a few weeks ago? Total walking labia.

What bugs me about Julia’s is the lace on the top – it isn’t symmetrical on the sides and the middle piece looks like an add on. Is this what people complaining about Lupita’s sternum wanted instead? I will take the sternum.

  11. MrsBPitt says:

I’m sure Julia wore black because she is in mourning…however, I would have thought that she would have tried to be a tad more somber at the Oscars. I realize its a party, but every shot of her, she had a big laugh going on!

    • Jayna says:

I agree. Her sister died a week ago from suicide whether they were close or not. I mean, I would have thought she would have not been so over the top on the red carpet.

    • Crank says:

How is laughing a bad thing? Have you ever had a death in a family? I’m tired of people acting like you have to be somber looking for weeks and weeks after somebody has died. Yet another dumb comment about Julia and her sister’s death…seriously we don’t know what is going in her kind or his she is struggling/coping and I think judging how she acts is downright rude. It’d be one thing of she was partying like Lindsay Logan a week after a death, but all she’s doing her is having a good tone. Could be the first good time she’s has since the death. It’s none of our business. I know I’m ranting about this on this forum, but family member deaths hit me close to home, and it irks me that commenters are so flippant and ok with making dumb judgements because somebody is ‘laughing’ or looking happy.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I’m just saying, with all the bad publicity that Julia has received regarding her sister’s death…I would assume that she would act a bit demure on the red carpet…after all, she is an actor, and they are usually all about public persona…and Jeez, Crank, I wasn’t trying to be flip or get anyone upset..I have had many loved ones pass, and I understand, the need to laugh, even when you are feeling so down, but there was no need to bite my head off!

      • Kiddo says:

She may have been overcompensating. Sometimes when people suffer loss, they try hard to be very cheerful, lest they allow themselves to fall even slightly morose, they may collapse into all out mourning. Been there, done that.

      • Kiddo says:

Also, on Crank’s rants, I read them in the voice of Lewis Black and imagine the signature finger pointing coinciding with a near head-exploding breakdown. It’s quite entertaining.

      • Crank says:

        @kiddo: lol at the imagery.
@mrsbpitt: I do apologize for going on the defensive in that comment…things always tend to look worse in text than they do in my head. But this still a subject that hits close to home, so try to understand my reaction. Cheers!

      • MrsBPitt says:

@Crank…no worries…and @kiddo…thanks for the Lewis Black image…you had me laughing!

      • Green Girl says:

I guess I’d think that if Julia were crying in a corner during the Oscars or had a tragic appearance on her face, that would maybe draw more attention to her. Instead, she chose to go the route of business as usual at the Oscars – laughing, talking, etc. I can’t judge someone for how they mourn.

  12. Hubbahun says:

Jessica’s dress is a metaphor for her acting and her personality……….yawn. As for Julia, dear lord. Did you see her seriously desperate smile in the ‘selfie’?? Scary.

  13. Julia Roberts just looks awful. And that dress looks like she got it from GoodWill for five bucks.

    • Christin says:

The dress looks even more cheap up close. And the single tone blonde hair isn’t her best look. It looks too dry and also reminds me of when she went blonde while dating Keifer (supposedly trying to match his hair color).

    • The Original G says:

She should have gotten a bra while she was at it.

  14. QQ says:

CAN WE STOP PEPLUM ALREADY?!? UGHHHHGG

Jessica Biel looks like this was her first time at this Rodeo ( this is no compliment!) … Why do they invite her to this??

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Why oh why won’t the peplum die…

      • QQ says:

OMG why?!? Who came up with that trend, also if models and actresses look ATROCIOUS with that shit what hope is there for us all I Hate that trend with the passionate fire of a thousand suns!! UGH

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Some sicko came up with it, that’s who. Let’s see…what can I put on the dress to make it really unflattering? I know! Poofs on the hips! Hahahahaha evil laugh! They’ll all wear it and look like a$$holes! Hahahahaha

  15. Serene says:

I don’t like Julia Roberts. Too much ‘mean girl’, too much ‘it’s all about me’….she seems a bit fake, a bit obnoxious. Those are the vibes she gives off to me.

  16. paola says:

    No no no no no.
Worst dressed EVER was Liza Minnelli. She looked like she was attending a smurf’s pajamas party.
I don’t know what offends me more between the dress, the shoes or the blue hair.
    AWFUL.

    • Christin says:

In a way, I felt sorry for her. But why in the world didn’t she wear something under the top? Some of the photos leave little to the imagination.

  17. Tx says:

Friends don’t let friends wear Givenchy. And stylists should be fired for letting clients!!

  18. Jayna says:

I think it’s odd after all of these years her husband can’t show up even once to support her. I mean, she was nominated, not that she had a chance to win. I get it for all the meaningless red carpets not wanting to be a part of it, but it was the Oscars and she was nominated

  19. Original Tessa says:

    Jessica Biel’s body…

    That is all.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

This. Look at the silhouette, the buttons on the back just like “I dare you -LOOK at my Butt!” From the front it is meh, though. I feel sorry for her, I don’t know why. Where is her husband? Isn’t he an actor now? Sure his movie got snubbed and no one really thinks he’s an actor, but shouldn’t he show up for her? I just feel like he always leaves her hanging, v.similiar to Ben Affleck and Jen.

  20. Curious Cole says:

I can always depend on Julia to look horrible on the red carpet. She peaked sartorially when she won in the black gown with white piping, and that was over a decade ago.

  21. Mabs says:

Julia’s wearing something that looks like what my Mom wore to a hospital annual function in the early 80’s. YUCK.

  22. Mrs. Darcy says:

Julia looks like a hot mess but her sister died what, two weeks ago? It must be a weird headspace, she must be grieving on some level despite their fallout. I mean she was never going to win but maybe Julia must show face regardless?

  23. yennefer says:

I can’t get over the fact that it’s fucking CHANEL dress that it’s so utterly, overwhelmingly fug and bland. These days the only actress that can pull off a Chanel dress seems to be Keira Knightley. Oh, why didn’t they invite her?

  24. L says:

Everything about Julia’s dress from the peplum up is a hot mess. Frizzy messy hair, that god awful lace collar, the peplum, and the lace thing on her torso. Awful look.

And the woman is super annoying. Everytime they cut to her for reaction shots during a Ellen joke she had her big mouth open and was trying to make it all about her (as per usual). Ick.

  25. Nicolette says:

Julia’s gown looks like someone cut up a tablecloth and called it a dress.

  26. Nroth Wset says:

Julia should’ve stayed home, would’ve gained some sympathy.I dont like her, and that just grows and grows.

  27. Ice Queen says:

    Terribly cheap, both of them…

  28. Jess says:

Agreed with everything in this post. And really, really want to know why Biel got to present.

  29. DogMom says:

Does Julia have feet problems? In this dress her shoes are well covered. At the AMAs (I think) she walked out on stage so painfully, I cringed. When she’s photographed ‘off-duty’ she tends to sport uber supportive footwear. Anyone know?

  30. mar says:

I loved Jessica’s whole look, but I find her so underwhelming.

Julia was vibrant last night. I didn’t love the dress but overall she was electric.

  31. shellybean says:

I hate Jessica’s dress. She looks like she’s all one color, it is so boring. Like her. BORING.

I didn’t hate Julia’s look overall. The dress isn’t my favorite (I am not a fan of lace in general), but at least she looks dressed up for once, and her hair and makeup looked beautiful.

  32. Diana says:

Oh my God, did anyone noticed Whoopi Goldberg was wearing a version or the same dress I don’t know, that Julia wore at the Globes? And it looke even worse on Whoopi, which I did not think was posible.

    • Decloo says:

Yes, I noticed and I thought it was setting us up for some sort of “Julia” joke. It was clearly the same dress but too baggy and out of shape. I didn’t hate it on Julia.

  33. Jayna says:

Julia’s dress was horrendous, but I actually thought she looked pretty. I didn’t even mind her blonde hair at all and her makeup was nice

Jessica’s dress is to die for on her. I love it and want it.

I still say it must have been hard to appear at this thing with all the publicity about it. It would have been nice for her husband to say, you know what, you are nominated and I know it’s hard with the suicide and all of its surrounding negativity. So I am going and want to be by your side, even though I never usually go, and that was the agreement when we married, that I didn’t want to be a part of that aspect of your life. But this is different. You need me and I want to be there for you. That would have been a nice thing to do for his wife.

    • Christin says:

In a comment above, I was unsure which husband you were referencing (Danny or Justin). I agree with you. Especially in this situation, I would have thought he would have accompanied her.

Then again, my personal opinion or observation of him is that he’s a man-child that she puts on a pedestal (“my husband” this and that). A supportive partner would have been there, regardless if she tried to say he didn’t have to do it.

  34. EmmGee says:

I’m not understanding the extra lace on the right shoulder.
It kinda throws off the whole look, not that it was spectacular to begin with, but still…..I want to either tuck it in or cut it off.

  35. Maggie says:

Jessica looked very pretty but Julia and Angie had the worst look of the night. Both wearing old lady dresses.

  36. Natasha says:

I am a julia roberts fan and I liked the dress and good she was having fun. Why not

  37. roxy750 says:

They all look great, I love Julia’s look, ya the dress isn’t the best but its beautiful nonetheless. As far as Jessica—-way way way too tight, not sure the point here. yes Jessica we know you work out and don’t really eat…we get it you are a fitness fanatic…no need to show it off. Really bad dress—but she herself is pretty of course.

  38. taxi says:

Jessica B a presenter? Wow. Who got paid/bribed for that? She hasn’t done anything professionally impressive lately. Is it supposed to be a pre-release (Nailed) that she’s still around?
The back buttons may look pretty, but try sitting on those.

  39. Meggin says:

I thought Julia looked pretty but I am not a fan of her hair color that blonde. I think she looks better with her auburn hair.

  40. Tellie says:

Why does Julia Roberts remind me of Sandra Bullock?

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

same plastic surgeon doctor or dermatologist? LOL

      • Tellie says:

You know, that is entirely possible, since a lot of celebrities have the same type of procedures done on their faces.

  41. India says:

IMO, Julia looks great as a blonde with her golden skin. Not so keen on that dress though.

  42. Dawn says:

Okay so Jessica Biel has a banging body and doesn’t look like a cheap hooker! Good for her. As for Julia, I am just sort of sick of her and think her dress looks good if she were like 70.

  43. Vilodemeanus says:

I know she believes she’s gorgeous, but I find her really average for a supposed Hollywood beauty. It’s an okay dress, but what the dress really proves is she’s not getting first dibs on anything by the top designers that’s for sure.

As for Julie, why wasn’t she wearing Dior? Isn’t she the face of their new scent, Eau du Bitch? Don’t like her dress at all.

  44. Kosmos says:

Julia’s never been known for her stylish dressing, ditto for the Oscars night.
