In years to come, we will refer to this as The Brandi Glanville Defense. When a celebrity is called out for doing or saying or tweeting something blatantly racist, that celebrity declares that they are not racist because – wait for it – they’ve banged black guys. It’s the new “I have black friends” defense. It’s the defense for the 21st century racist.
So, obviously, we’re still talking about Chelsea Handler’s racist tweets during the Oscars. She loves this, incidentally. She loves that we’re talking about her. She interprets our scorn as interest, like she’s mega-controversial for being so bold and unconventional. She’s pretty much a garden-variety racist, only she has a public platform and no one seems willing to call her out on her BS. Case in point: Chelsea tweeted all of that racist crap when she took over the HuffPo feed. HuffPo still has the tweets up. They are unashamed to associate with her.
Here’s another example. Chelsea appeared on Good Morning America yesterday and George Stephanopoulos asked her about the racist tweets. And when I say he asked her about the tweets, I mean he asked her about how people reacted to the tweets, because hack journalism.
Chelsea says:
“People are mad at me all the time. If was worried about that then I would be spending a lot of time online. I’d rather be a little more productive. I’m not racist. I date a lot of black people, so that would be a difficult thing to explain to them.”
I don’t get the “If was worried about that then I would be spending a lot of time online. I’d rather be a little more productive” thing. Is she saying that it’s only bloggers who think she’s racist and she’s so busy and important and famous, she doesn’t have time to worry about us? Er… this current controversy started because she was online… live-tweeting the Oscars. To promote her book, which she is promoting online. Lord, she’s dumb.
As for the whole “I can’t be a racist because I bang black guys” defense – it’s not a defense, just like the “I have black friends” thing isn’t a defense. Just because you know, befriend and sleep with black people, those associations don’t inoculate a person from racism. I mean, Phil Robertson knows some black people too. And he thinks they were just fine when they couldn’t vote and there were lynchings every so often.
PS… Yes, I noticed how she looks like a Botox-monster in that video too.

She also makes racist jokes about other cultures besides African Americans. I don’t know if she just says horrible racist things for pr, ratings, or whatever…but I think the real reason is because she doesn’t have any substantial jokes as a Comedian. She relies on racist crap to get a laugh. It’s not funny. Also, I don’t know why Chuy puts up with the racist crap she says about Mexicans. I know he is probably paid very well, but dignity is priceless !
I think a lot of bad comedians, like Handler, see that sometimes offensive jokes are funny and get big laughs and then think “all offensive jokes are funny and get big laughs”. Some offensive jokes are just dumb. And offensive. And not funny at all. Like Handler.

I only know her from this site, and caught a few episodes of her show YEARS ago. And if you look at her archives, the last time she was covered was when she was copying Jennifer Aniston’s haircut, and before that, she was talking trash about AJ.
But I did email Huffington Post yesterday–out of all the female comics, they had to pick her? I’ve never laughed at a joke of hers. Ever.
When she initially started she was on the internet only and really was sort of funny but then she slept with the head guy from E! and it has been all downhill from there. She is overly full of herself and I quit watching her years ago. Everything and everyone seems so trashy on the E! channel that I never watch a thing on it. Shame on NBC who I believe is the parent company of this channel doesn’t do something to clean it up. This is one American who doesn’t find her funny in the least.
I despise everything about the E network. Everyone on that network is annoying to me. Ryan Seacrest is the maker of the Devil’s own spawn. Chelsea Handler is the Queen of the Devil’s own spawn. She makes Kris Jenner look classy and talented.
This is what happens when you sleep with the married boss and you have an agent at the better firm. You get a pass. The blond girl who makes money for a lot of people, gets the pass. The blond girl who fills columns, in print and online, gets the pass. Will this change how many agency “friends” she has? Will people stop going on her show? Will she stop being invited to all the good pap walks? Has she finally gone too far in her bile soaked attacks on Angie? is the is the first stumble on a great fall? I ,for one, can’t wait to see.
Maybe she should start hanging out with Paula Deen. They can both make a huge living at being offensive and acting surprised anyone finds them offensive.

The answer to all your questions is NO. Chelsea is currently on tour promoting her new book and guess who filled in for her yesterday? Gabourey Sidibe with musical guest Kid Cuddi. They didn’t even bring up the Huff Po controversy at all.
Gabourey was in a tough position. I am sure her fill in job was arranged ages ago. If she bailed she would be considered a ‘problem’ and unprofessional.
I don’t expect anyone on the handler show to mention the crazy, racist tweets of the person responsible for their paychecks.
Chelsea will do what she has to do to sell books. Even if it is to be a racist, bitter, unfunny jackass.
I know, of course Gabourey was probably scheduled to be on the show months ago. I get that. But they didn’t bring up the controversy at all. The show loves to point fingers and laugh at other celebs but can’t do it with Chelsea? Instead they talked about Kim and the “blackface” issue in Vienna.
They wouldn’t bringing it up just like they don’t bring up anything to do with Jen, Gwen, Sandra, Camden or Reese. Because it would make her look bad and her views might start question why they are watching her show and what kind of person she is.

Some comedians can do the insult/edgy/race jokes thing and get away with it because it allows us, as the audience, to laugh at ourselves. We cringe and then laugh at our own embarrassment toward racism or even our own hidden racists thoughts. The embarrassment is the joke. That’s what comedians do. Make us laugh at ourselves.
She however isn’t funny, she uses these “edgy” and controversial statements as a cover for her lack of funny. She’s a wannabe. And she’s just embarrassing. Eventually even her celebrity friends (cough – Jeniston) will leave her behind because of it.
Her contract ends this year, and I seriously doubt it will be renewed. Not just because of crap like this, but a few posters from yesterday’s post said that she’s barely doing anything on the show, and is getting lazier and lazier–this’ll go the way of that other show she had.
I’m listening to her on Howard Stern right now. She just said she’s 39, no way is that true. She sounds like she’s 50!

Paula Deen is racist. Calling people n*ggers, strategically disenfranchising your staff on account of their being black, and thinking it’s funny to have said wait staff dress up as Civil War era servants. That is racist. The Korean dude who neglected to give me a job despite the fact that I was more qualified than the white man he hired is racist.

When she stops inviting black entertainers and comedians onto her show and starts relegating the black members of her staff to menial janitorial duties, then I’ll adjust my opinion. This is probably a really stupid question and I’m certainly not trying to defend Chelsea Handler, but why is the Brandi Glanville defense not a defense exactly? If someone actually thought someone of another ethnic group was lesser, why would they date them, let alone choose them to build a life with? Or are we just saying that someone can make a statement that is, itself, racist without actually meaning that the person who made the statement holds racist beliefs? What I mean is that I don’t actually think Chelsea is racist because I don’t think a racist person would date someone of another race (I grew up in East Texas and know lots of racists and they certainly would not). However, her statements themselves were racist. Is that the difference?

It’s possible for a person to publically espouse specific opinions and bias but privately act in a manner that is contrary to their expressed values. In CH’s case, I don’t think she’s racist. Just a silly twit with a mic. I’m from TX, too. I know what a legitimate racist looks like.
