Chris Evans clarifies his negative Marvel comments: ‘I gotta watch what I say’

Chris Evans

The dents are starting to appear in Captain America’s armor. I don’t mean to celebrate at all. Chris Evans is wildly amusing to me, and his interviews never fail to entertain. All I want is for Evans to come up with a new angle to promote Captain America: The Winter Solder than the perpetual nervous breakdown that got him through press rounds for the first Cap movie and The Avengers.

Last we heard from Chris, this handsome pup hadn’t learned any new tricks. It’s been nearly two years since he talked about loving women who get emotional about puppies and have big asses and wet ponytails. I miss that charisma. Chris now wallows in his own self pity and doesn’t realize how fortunate he is. So many other actors would love to have a crack at a Marvel role, and Chris willingly signed onto a six-film contract.

Chris’ latest complaint was that his heart isn’t in the role anymore. I don’t know if he’s truly lost track of how many people at Marvel sweat (for much lower salaries) so that he may shine. I can’t tell if he’s trying to get himself replaced by Sebastian Stan. Someone at Marvel must have spoken to Chris. He reached out to Collider in an effort to “clarify” his latest remarks. The problem is … he’s not really “clarifying.” He’s simply covering his magnificent Cap ass. Here’s what he actually said:

“Oh yeah, this was a big thing! I gotta watch what I say. I will absolutely clarify. I have a six-movie contract with Marvel and I absolutely plan on fulfilling them. This is without a doubt the biggest blessing in my life. Marvel has literally changed the game for me, and they make great movies. I did direct last year and it was a really fantastic experience, I really enjoyed it. So I’m certainly looking to do that a bit more, so when it comes to exploring other acting jobs I may not be as proactive in trying to find those, I may kind of stick with my Marvel universe in terms of getting in front of the camera, and then getting behind the camera outside of it.”

[From Collider]

I’ll admit to being entertained by this mess. Chris doesn’t realize how lucky he is to be a male actor in Hollywood right now. Audiences are far more forgiving to men who whine (i.e., Shia LaBeouf) than women who dare to say anything negative at all (i.e., Katherine Heigl). If Scarlett Johansson decided to talk trash about the Marvel machine, she’d be ripped apart all over the internet. ScarJo will probably be punished more for daring to get pregnant than Chris will for his ungrateful words. That’s not cool at all, but it’s reality. In Hollywood and elsewhere.

All I’m trying to say is that Chris needs to realize his interviews are not therapy sessions. The neuroses are cute to a point, but there’s gotta be more to the guy who plays Captain America than insecurity.

I wish Marvel would just let Samuel Jackson talk and make Scarlett and Chris sit this one out. Ugh.
Sam would say what he means and mean what he says. Period.

  2. Sorry but my crush on him is still intact.

    • V4Real says:

I still adore him as well and we wouldn’t like him so much if he was perfect.

However, I do believe someone got a call from Marvel about their previous comment and now he’s covering that great ass.

On a different note why is Scarlett posing like she has to take a piss and she’s trying to hold it in?

      • lol! He most definitely did, V4Real!
That “clarification” came a bit too quickly 😉

      • mom2two says:

Oh yeah, he got a call from Marvel. Now if he said these comments in the first place, no clarification would be needed. If he said, “Once I am done with my Marvel commitment, I plan to focus on smaller movies and more directing opportunities.” No one would have thrown shade his way at all.
The original comments made him sound ungrateful as all get out. Really, how do his fellow actors who work on these movies and the behind the scenes folks who work hard for less money to make these movies happen feel when the lucky star admits, “My heart’s not in it.”

      • Liv says:

“We wouldn’t like him so much if he was perfect.”

        Best argument ever! 😉

      • pato says:

LOL I thought exactly the same, what the hell with Scarjo´s pose? And the hair like in front of a fan….wtf

    • Izzy says:

I adore Dat Cap Ass. And actually, his plan doesn’t sound all that unreasonable to me. Keep making bank on Marvel movies, and direct the projects that speak to his heart when he’s not working on the Marvel movies. Sounds kind of win-win to me.

    • Rae says:

      Mine, too!

  3. lucy2 says:

You can’t have a Chris Evans and a Chris Pine post so close to each other, or I will get them confused! They are completely interchangeable in my mind.

    • Mia4S says:

LOL! It’s funny because it’s true! That’s the other reason I laughed at the “I’m going to take a break from acting!”. Ummm, sweetie Hollywood won’t care, they’ll just cast Chris Pine. 😉

    • QQ says:

Thiiissss!! In my mind Chris and Chris are the same exact person to the point it takes me a while to realize Captain America wasnt in Star Trek … He/them are my male IslaChastainAmyFisherJessicaAdams

      • Migdalia says:

Gosh NO WAY lol. Chris Evans > Chris Pine. I find Evans more charismatic in his films whereas Chris Pine is not such a draw to me. Again IMHO

      • Nessa says:

Chris Pine doesn’t even compare to Chris Evans in my opinion. Not even close… But that’s just me!

  4. serena says:

I’m really starting thinking he’s seriously an idiot, and a douchebag.

  5. Jasmine says:

I hate ScarJo’s pose in that promotional poster. All of the men get to look bada** and heroic and she looks like she could be in a VS catalog or Sports Illustrated. I wish women got better roles in action films besides being the complimentary sexpot to all of the manly action.

    • itsetsyou says:

@Jasmine “All of the men get to look bada** and heroic and she looks like she could be in a VS catalog or Sports Illustrated.” – yeah, I got that vibe too. I saw a couple of interviews where she’s asked about her role in Marvel movies and you can tell she’s annoyed with ‘your cat-suit is so amazing’ questions. Not that Avengers is a serious acting but at least men are being asked something other than how they were able to get in shape for the movie.

      • Jessica says:

Actually, a lot of men who had to beef up for a role are asked how they did it: their workout routine and eating and whatnot.

Reaching out to Collider? It was a junket yesterday with the cast after the screening and Collider asked the question and he answered.

Perpetual nervous breakdown? Seriously. From a site that revels in the drama to the point of making up it’s own reality that’s rich. This is the site a couple months ago that took a self deprecating joke made by Evans and spun it into how Evans is hard to get along with on set and that there were rumors he was about to be fired and killed off in the series.

Behavior like that is why I find it difficult to believe an entertainment “reporting”. Look at all the crap that happened with Garfield last week. It’s why some people have to “clarify”.

Also – Shia is now a national punchline – must use better examples.

    • Side-Eye says:

Oh my God, all of this.

    • shay says:

This! He didn’t reach out to collider to clarify, collider asked him about it during a press junket. I actually read his glamour uk interview, he didn’t even say that his heart wasn’t in it anymore. he was just talking about not acting after his marvel contract. he was talking about how you have more control on the final product with directing than with acting, and from that, it could be inferred that he wanted to focus on directing more than acting for a bit. Which isn’t all that new, lots of actors talk about how they want to concentrate on directing and not act as much.

  8. als says:

I think we are judging too much…even Captain America needs to see a therapist once in a while!
Maybe his movie should be called Cap. America’s Anatomy.

  9. Tig says:

Well, knew this was coming- surprised it took this long. It is always surprising to me that these actors who have access to the best media training out there insert foot in mouth during print interviews. Granted, it’s those “plants” that generate the hits, but for Chris especially, it’s a mystery. Maybe he really has a compulsion, or is honest to a fault?

  10. Lori says:

I didn’t realise Robert Redford was in this? I might see it.

    • someone says:

Ha! I said that too once I saw Robert Redford in the trailer. Granted I wish it was Robert Redford of old versus the current old Robert Redford but I’ll take what I can get. He still has a place in my heart.

  11. J says:

I always thought he was referring to acting as opposed to the specific role of Captain America. If he had said ‘I’m not into playing Cap’ then sure, blast away. But given that he followed the statement up with wanting to switch from acting to directing I always thought he was talking about acting in general.

    • shay says:

exactly. no shading needed. he just wants to focus on directing after all the marvel movies. not that big of a deal. he didn’t diss cap, in fact he talked about how cap opened up new opportunities.

  12. Miss Jupitero says:

Marvel is now a part if Disney and Disney is very particular about its image. He had better be grateful. He doesn’t know how replaceable he is.

  13. aquarius64 says:

Yeah somebody at Marvel jerked a knot in him. And Johannson in the poster…she looks like a Bond girl.

  14. Apple Love says:

He’s actually a GREAT character actor. Anyone seen Iceman? He was fantastic in that. No wonder he’s moody about having to do something as lame as Marvel. Those franchises are the bubble/fastfood/insert appropriate metaphor here of the movie diet. I like his foot-in-the-mouth comments.

  15. Lubyanka says:

ScarJo probably should get more crap for getting pregnant than Evans should for his comments. I understand that accidents happen, but her situation could disrupt filming and cost significantly in the long run.

Not only costs to the studio, but delays could prevent actors from taking other roles and the poor crew doesn’t have the large salaries she’s been paid to fall back on. Granted that’s all worst case scenario, but they’re already having to shuffle the shooting schedule to accommodate.

I’m not even remotely suggesting that a woman should be punished for getting pregnant, so don’t jump all over me about that. But, her actions have consequences that go far beyond herself. On the flipside, Evans’ comments can produce little more than ruffled PR feathers.
