Chelsea Handler on her racist tweets: ‘I’m a comedian. You don’t have to laugh’

Chelsea Handler

Chelsea Hander continues her “I’m not racist” tour to promote her new book, Uganda Be Kidding Me. I thought about including an Amazon link with that title, but nahh. She’s not worth it. Chelsea is pimping the book right now and visited Piers Morgan last night. The full transcript of the interview is here. She talks about hair extensions, doing quaaludes with Jane Fonda, and getting laid all the time.

Piers brought up Chelsea’s racist tweets from Oscar night. She had tweeted that Angelina Jolie was going to adopt Lupita Nyong’o. Then Chelsea tried to say she wasn’t a racist because she bangs black guys. All of you saw right through Chelsea’s lame “defense,” and now she’s talking to Piers about why she doesn’t care about your reaction. Because you don’t have to laugh at her jokes:

She’s has no need for pr0n: “Pr0n is a hard pelt for even me to swallow. I’m not interested in it. So I don’t really — I’m not really clear on the — or as well versed on the ins and outs of pr0n of unintended as people would think I am. It’s just nothing that’s interesting to me. But I do believe in sexual freedom. I mean people don’t like to admit that they watch as much pr0n as much pr0n as they do. I think there’s a certain amount of shame in it. I mean, if you ware sitting around watching a lot of pr0n, the indication or the, you know, would be that you’re not having a lot of sex of your own. I mean, and that’s why I don’t need to watch it because it’s going on with me.”

Piers tells Chelsea she tweets “very amusingly”: “I wish you did. I mean, in the middle of the commercial break, I want your viewers to know, I mean, they must know because they’re probably following you on Twitter. I mean, you can’t even pay attention for 60 seconds. You’re a terrible interviewer. It doesn’t matter how interesting I am. You signed up for this job.”

On her racist tweets: “I get into trouble all the time. I mean, people, I’m a comedian. I … You don’t have to laugh. You don’t have to like it but not … I can’t take those claims seriously because that’s very far from the truth. If I got really upset about them, there might be some truth to it.”

[From CNN]

Ugh, this woman is terrible. CNN has made a clip available so that we can watch Chelsea justify her non-racist racism, but whatever. I don’t understand why offensive comedians always feel the need to point out that they are comedians. It happens all the time, and they always point back to Eddie Murphy’s work as a reason to justify their own racist jokes.

I’m also not shocked at all that Chelsea ripped on Piers for tweeting during a commercial break. He wasn’t doing it during the interview, so I don’t see the problem. But Chelsea thinks it’s all about her. Maybe he wanted to keep their talk fresh for the actual interview instead of wasting banter during a commercial break. Chelsea got offended by a little thing like that, but she wants us all to go easy on her tasteless jokes.

I have never understood the appeal of this girl. She always seems so bored and put off by everything. And for a comedian she certainly isn’t very funny.

      +1000
My cousin has watched her from the beginning and talks about how funny she is. I watch a few minutes of 1 episode and was blown away by how unoriginal she was. Even if I had the tv on for just background noise and she would come on I would immediately turn it.

      • Cleo says:

When she first came on air I watched a couple of shows. She wasn’t that funny back then of course either, but as I recall she did ‘bits’ or sketch type comedy featuring other performers.

It must have been around the time of the Pitt Aniston divorce because the show put on sketch comedy bits (featuring other comedians, not her, lol, which is why they were somewhat funny I think) about ‘poor loser Jen.’ There was a bit where Aniston’s on this ‘Dating Game’ type show, and she’s trying to get a guy, and the ‘contestants’ were like plumbers, police officers, butchers who turned her all down.

There was another bit where a distraught ‘Aniston’ stalks Angelina into a bathroom, and starts hysterically ranting, and wants to fight her. Angelina takes poor Jen down, and the coup de grace moment was a shot of breastmilk in Jen’s eye which blinds her (I think Jolie had just had Shiloh, lol), – and Angie cool-like, walks out.

That was funny. Handler was not in these skits. So no surprise.

Anyway, this is why I call foul on Handler, and her fake lame excuse she gives when confronted with why she decided to go all in on Jolie in 2009-2010 up to present day? When confronted with why she’s ‘hatin’ on Jolie her go-to line is: I’ve always made fun of Angelina since she made out with her brother.’
This is b.s. however. I don’t doubt she cracked a joke here or there on Jolie, but that’s not really what people were asking – which was, but ‘why the hate, devoid of funny?’

She’s not telling jokes. She was flat out attacking Angelina, and slurring her character in missives in the press.

This is Handler expressing her personal opinion about what Jolie must be like, and yammering about how she just gets a vibe about her, and how she would never want to be friends…blah blah blah – which HELLO?? …aren’t jokes, but personal nasty almost slanderous opinions of one person heavily over-invested in another person that they don’t even know (creepy and stalker-y in and of itself) – is NEW!

The truth is having seen the bits she did on Aniston, Handler was MUCH more inclined to disrespect and humiliate HER over Jolie….which is why I think Aniston’s PR dude reached out to Handler to shut her down sometime in 2008. Why Handler and Aniston are never called out about these FACTS, I have no idea. I have a feeling it’s because a lot of media outlets are in bed with him.

He’s long been known for trying to woo people who have been historically not nice to Aniston (see Perez ‘Maniston’ Hilton and his guest starring gig on ‘Dirt,’ offer to get him to shut up. Says a lot about how distraught Aniston must have been at Hilton’s constant trashing, if her PR is trying to get him TV gigs)

So Handler signs with Aniston’s longtime power PR flack, and agreed to become her own personal attack dog (and bestie in the press!), to keep the Brangelina/Angelina ‘war’ going which fuels Aniston’s relevancy (and now, Handler’s own as well). It’s a twofer.

Essentially, that PR dude of Aniston’s is a genius, he’s basically making Angelina a marketing tool for both of them now. If he could make Angelina and Brad work for everyone in his stable he would do it. He spends no resources, and just collects his 20% from both of those women.

      • Cleo says:

Oh look, they are as predictable as the setting sun. Paltrow is also a client of the same PR flack, and it appears she had a job to do last night: http://www.laineygossip.com/Gwyneth-Paltrow-interviews-Chelsea-Handler-to-promote-Uganda-Be-Kidding-Me/29683
By the way, Lamey says it sucked and also that they went on about girls who don’t hang around girls bit of business (code for we hate Angelina, I’m guessing, lol)…I’m starting to think their shared publicist is actually the one who was really in love with Brad Pitt.

Exactly. The first time I ever heard her go full hate on Angelina Jolie was a month or two after her ‘solo’ Thanksgiving trip to Cabo with Jennifer Aniston.

    • Rice says:

ITA. When she first started out, I watched 5 minutes and came to the following conclusions:
      1. She is NOT funny
      2. The “audience” is either very well paid or the laughter is a recording
      3. Her voice gives me the same feeling I get when I smell dog stale dog sh*t.

A comedian who tells “jokes” (and I use that term loosely) for a living is telling the public not to laugh at her jokes. I think we shouldn’t hesitate to oblige her this request.

    • harpreet says:

I agree, I don’t get her appeal to her friends like Charlize and Sandra. I mean, you are raising black sons, and your “friend” who is a comedian has no ounce of regret for her stereotypical and racist remarks.

I am side-eyeing Sandra and Charlize.

      • darkdove says:

that is true i am dissapointed in these women i use to like them a lot before but now not so much their only saving point is that they are good actresses but i am starting to doubt them as good human beings i dont think they are worth it enymore.

      • Cecilia says:

I don’t find it difficult to ignore someone like Chelsea. She reminds me a bit of Howard Stern. I used to loathe Howard until I was able to separate his celebrity stick from his actual personality, plus, I never found him to be very funny. With Chelsea…I don’t even care what she is really like. Maybe Sandra & Charlize took the time to find out.

      • Mark says:

How is she racist for making a joke? How man black comedians are on stage making outdated corny ‘white people be like’ jokes?

        She stinks but isn’t racist

      • Cleo says:

Contrary to your opinion ‘Mark,’ you cannot disprove someone is racist, by pointing to what you think *some* black people do that is ‘racist,’ also. For instance, because some black person said, ‘I hate Whitey,’ once, that doesn’t mean you can then say, ‘Hooray – that means no white people are racist ever.’ Just because Richard Pryor told jokes about white people, that doesn’t mean that Senator Strom Thurmond, who voted against every civil rights measure ever, and was against integration, who once forced himself on his 15yr old black housekeeper wasn’t.

    • Cleo says:

      +10,000,000

Bottomline, she is not funny. Period. I think her appeal, is virtually the same as the class bully’s appeal in homeroom. Everyone gathers around the loudmouth making fun of other kids because a) they’re relieved and glad it’s not them and b) watching someone else get attacked makes you feel like you’re better than them.

I’m not saying she has never ever elicited a joke that got laughs (she has writers, if they’re good enough, even Khloe Kardashian is a comedian), but when you’re a REAL comedian with talent, it’s all about ratios, i.e., are you more often funny than not. Not about the few times you elicited a laugh. With regards to Handler, the answer is no. I don’t think she’s an inherently funny or gifted comedian. I think her niche when she came out was supposed to be funny, mean drunk who wants you to think she’s ‘OUTRAGEOUS.’

When in reality she’s just a mean drunk, who writes books for extra cash….and frankly, even Brandi Glanville does that better. I think she sells more books too. lol

      • Camille (The Original) says:

+100000 to everything you said. I have nothing else to add about this piece of trash.

      • Mark says:

Your comment to me made no sense at all, did you even read it? I didn’t say black people, i said comedians and yes 95 percent of black comedians go on stage and talk about white people.

      • Cleo says:

It made sense to people who aren’t clueless Mark.

See, typically, the people who have been marginalized/oppressed by the larger group, get a pass because most people realize that racism and discrimination is a bad thing. So when the oppressed group is talking about the oppressor (in a general, collective sense) – we GET, that is but one of the ways that enables said groups to deal.

You can reduce it to ‘Waaah, black people joke about how white people dance all the time, so why can’t Handler call Sidney Poitier, Nelson Mandela?’ but the real reason is in the jokes themselves – she is not funny and has no skill…AND to top it off, she’s racist.

If you want to run right out and find a black comic that sux, who tells insulting ‘white,’ jokes – that’s fine, I’ll agree with you, most likely, that they are indeed indeed insulting.

But guess what? You won’t find one, because black people don’t get famous by being bad and mediocre at what they do typically, that’s a privilege only reserved for whites, specifically white bottle blonds who scrw their married network President’s to get tv shows.

        Also…

White people have been ridiculing blacks and making them sources of entertainment since they were first brought here on the boats in the 1600s, be it minstrel shows and black face, or horrific cartoons and stereotypical comedy routines. Chelsea Handler continues in that tradition except I doubt she’d make the racists laugh either.

      • lucy says:

Cleo, Bullies do not have ‘appeal’. Your claim that “watching someone else get attacked makes you feel like you’re better than them” is most certainly ~appallingly~ NOT appealing. A bully may think so, however. But a compassionate, well-adjusted, mature human being would not.

We get it. You cannot stand Chelsea Handler’s comedy and you think she is a racist. OK.

      • Cleo says:

Comprehension Lucy, you’re doing it wrong. You’re also making my point, of which you seem wholly unaware. Yes! Correct! The people this nasty no talent bullying slag “appeals,” to, are NOT, in my opinion, “compassionate. well adjusted. mature human beings.” They are indeed the exact opposite of all that. Thanks for pointing that out. Much like me, you apparently also think, that those who like what she does, like it because they feel better about themselves when they hear others (especially ‘others,’ for whom they have some kind of irrational hate and envy of already) getting attacked by her. Thanks!

    “I guess it’s a trouble all the time. I mean, people, I’m a comedian. I … You don’t have to laugh.
    ———————
Um, we’re not. Not only were her tweets insulting and racist–they weren’t even funny. I’m still wondering HOW, excepting the fact that she was banging her married boss of the E! Networks, how this chick even got a show.

    • idk says:

Yeah, there’s a problem when the “guests” on the show are funnier than the host. Her salary is ridiculous, like an insane amount of money and she’s not really all that funny. We’ll be laughing when E doesn’t renew her contract and gives her sidekick Chuy Bravo a show of his own.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

It really makes me cringe how she treats him–from the few minutes of the show I’ve seen. She seems to, imo, treat him like a prop or a commodity.

      • idk says:

Yes, she makes racist comments towards him all the time (from what I’ve seen). I sure hope he gets paid well to put up with that sh*t. I have, on occasion, heard him call her a b*tch on the show, that’s the only time I have really laughed watching her show. I do like the guest panel she has on, they are usually funny and they are the reason I tune in from time to time. Chelsea doesn’t need to even show up anymore. She just reads from cards and then makes a “I don’t give a f*ck” face and acts like she’d rather be throwing down shots in a dirty bar somewhere.

      • FLORC says:

Wow. I so all I have to do is claim i’m a only trying to be funny by saying the most racist things I can think of… Maybe bang a rich married man and get my own show. All while doing the dirty work for my best friends that still hates her ex of over a decade ago.
        You’re living the dream Chelsea!

    • jaye says:

You hit the nail on the head. She got her job because she was banging the man who was E!’s head honcho at the time. And didn’t she drop him like a hot potato when he got canned?

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

She dumped him after he signed a contract that would give her her show up through this year…..it was all covered in the archives of this site–that’s where I read it.

Which is also why I am VERY perplexed as to how/why she thinks that she can call someone else a homewrecking c-nt, when she’s the one who was not only sleeping with her married BOSS, but then dumped him as soon as the ink dried on her contract for her show—wasn’t even TRYING to be subtle about the fact that she was screwing him for a tv show.

    • phlyfiremama says:

Exactly. Don’t worry, b!t@h, we aren’t laughing. You aren’t funny~you are just mean, spiteful, and ugly, with nothing positive to add to any conversation. The only ones laughing at you are the ones who share your mentality, and they would laugh at ANYTHING as long as someone else is the butt of the joke. Your ship is sinking fast, and I for one say good riddance to bad rubbish.

  3. Monie says:

Whew, so glad she gave me permission not to laugh at her dumb ass jokes! I was starting to wonder if I was deficient in some way. Thanks Chels!

  4. QQ says:

Or we mightcould not have to laugh Cause she isn’t Funny?

  5. LadyMTL says:

We don’t have to laugh? Trust me, Chelsea, I never was.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Another example of the non apology, stupid justifications for saying racist things. I’m a comedian, so I meant my racist remark to be funny. Oh, then it’s ok. As long as you think it’s funny. What a crass, mean old thing she is.

  7. Rainbows says:

Chelsea and Piers have had this snarky relationship for a long time. They bitch at each other whenever shes on, its tongue in cheek (although since they are both self-involved b*tches there may be some bite to it). Its their Act, this wasnt a falling out.

Now, i have to say that in covering her inconsequential interview you have given her her lifes blood – attention. Black her out. Its not like she cares what we think of her as long as we are thinking of her. Black. Her. Out.

    • idk says:

I thought Piers’s show was cancelled?

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

But does the attention translate into people watching her show?

How many people watch talk shows when some celeb comes on who can’t act and has never really carried a movie—does that mean that all of those people go and watch the celeb’s movies? No.

Covering the idiotic things that Handler says/does gives her attention, yes–but unless people are tuning into her show, buying tickets to her tours, and buying her books–then it doesn’t matter how much attention Handler gets. She’s going to be done–it might take a little while longer, but she’s going to be done.

The only reason why she even mentioned Angelina in those stupid tweets is so that she would get attention–there was absolutely no point otherwise. She got two more seconds of attention than she would have, if she hadn’t made those tweets mentioning those specific people, and then *had* to talk about it in interviews.

If she hadn’t made those stupid tweets then the only thing that this interview would’ve been about was her talking about p0rn and dissing Morgan’s interviewing skills (again)….same old, same old.

      • Maggie says:

Why do you obcessively follow someone you dislike?

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

What in my comment translates into me obsessively following Handler? I don’t. What I get, I get from this site—I don’t watch her show, read/buy her books, etc. And who cares if I do? It’s gossip. Are we supposed to like all of the people that we comment on, on a gossip site?

It would be one thing if I was on here calling Handler as many vulgar names as I could think of–but I see no issue with me saying WHY I don’t like her–I find it a lot better than just calling her a name and then that’s it. If we all agreed, this site wouldn’t be too much now, would it?

      • Jen says:

“Maggie” why do you insult someone for no reason who is giving an opinion? Just to be mean? Psh.

  8. Wednesday says:

I can’t believe people are running with the “Chelsea ripped into Piers” during his live show bit. That’s not what happened. I’ve seen Chelsea on his show two or three times and Piers on her show for one interview and they have this bickering/humorous (to them) relationship.

  9. tricklady says:

My my certainly a double standard for “Female comedians” Men do that crap all day long and no one says boo. Jump on into the decade.

    • mercy says:

True, but most of them don’t have their own shows. Many comedians have the delivery down, but they don’t have the skills or talent to write good material or put a good show together.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m not trying to talk you out of it if that’s what you believe, and my mind is totally blank as to male comedians who have said similar things, so I can’t really address that, but I have seen plenty of outrage on here towards men who make racist or homophobic remarks. Haven’t you?

      • Elle Kaye says:

@GoodNames, I think the point wasn’t toward the people posting, but the people who write the stories. Handler gets a lot of grief for the things she says, yet the guys who use being “rednecks” as their comedy routines get no flack. Why is that? They are sterotyping segments of society, yet they get a free pass? Is it because they are men, or because only certain segments should be protected? We shouldn’t be hypocritical.

Louis C.K can go on The Daily Show and joke about rape and killing Jews, but hey…no worries. Right? Because he was joking. Handler? Well, she is a bitch and she isn’t funny.

The fact is, joking about race or religion, or any of this nonsense is very insensitive. But to come down harder on a woman is just ridiculous. Men should not get a pass. The Paula Deen, “boys will be boys” ideology has GOT to go.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, ok, I see what you mean. And I agree those types of jokes aren’t funny and no one should get a pass, and that women shouldn’t be held to a different standard. I just misunderstood the context. Thank you.

      • Cleo says:

Oh please, let’s not make this awful no talent inclined to ridiculing black people, a rallying cry for feminism. That would be an insult to comedy and women everywhere.

I think you underestimate the audience when you compare her to comedians who have talent and are deft with a joke. There’s a reason why Louis CK, Lisa Lampanelli, and Sarah Silverman don’t get what Handler gets…they’re funny and talented. Period.

Telling jokes that may rely on stereotypes (as they do) is old, and will never go away – but singling out for ridicule, one group incessantly and garnering NO laughs, is the reason she has earned the title of racist hack. She goes to the ‘black well’ because it’s just another ‘outrage’ ploy that gets her ink and press (like name dropping/attacking ‘Angelina Jolie,’ which is another predictable marketing goto for her). She’s selling a book. Her ‘tour’ will coincide with the book to sell more books – marketing/PR ploys for sales are: black, black, black and Angelina.

With Handler, the joke’s punchline IS the racist ridicule and dispect, in a nice hot bowl of ignorant soup: i.e., old black man actor Sidney Poitier now onstage at Oscars is black and old therefore this old black man is also now deceased old black man Nelson Mandela, hahahahahaha. Nope. ’12 Years a Slave, is about black slavery in America therefore hahahahahaha buy my book with Uganda in the title.’ Nope, again.

I’m curious…did she tweet about anything else at all? Crack any OTHER non-jokes that did not somehow associate with 12 Years a Slave and Angelina?

      • mercy says:

    • Abbicci says:

Steve Martin was held to the same standard for ONE tweet. He acted like a professional comedian, one who really is funny.

She thinks she gets a pass on being racist. She doesn’t get the sisterhood pass on this one. You don’t get to skip over racism because you have ovaries. And this is just a perfect example of white privilege in feminism, the reason why women of color roll their eyes when people like Handler talk about her magic sisterhood circle.

Same medium ( twitter) but different responses from the comedian.

Steve Martin, typed some racist crap on twitter. He got called out. He accepted the criticism, saw he was wrong and apologized.

      http://www.celebitchy.com/341083/steve_martin_offers_a_longer_apology_explanation_of_his_lasonia_tweet/

      http://www.celebitchy.com/340829/steve_martin_tweets-and-deletes_a_racist_joke_do_you_accept_his_apology/

Chelsea Handler tweets some racist crap and tells everyone to screw off because she’s a comedian who has slept with black guys. She thinks her racism is cool and funny and why should we all be upset. And that is why people aren’t letting this go and are holding her to her words.

  10. mercy says:

    1. I’m not laughing. 2. For a comedian, she’s not a that funny.
There was a time when I felt I should like this woman. I enjoy irreverent humour and there was something about her demeanor early on that appealed to me. But every time I tuned into her show, it was a struggle to get through 5 minutes of it. It’s obnoxiously boring and repetitive. I’ve checked in periodically when she’s had a guest of interest, and it has only gotten worse over the years. I can’t see any other cable network giving her another shot once E! finally gives her show the ax.

  11. GIrlyGirl says:

Handler is a comedian? I thought she was Greta Van Susteren’s ugly twin.

Hey Chelsea, don’t worry as you’ve never made me laugh

    • Abbicci says:

Greta and Nancy Grace had a love child and they named her Chelsea.

      • tricklady says:

What do Greta Van Sustran and Nancy Grace have to do with this? I’m curious how you picked those two women. Is it because they are perfect examples of white privilege in feminism too?

  12. aenflex says:

I don’t see what the big deal is. No one would be up in arms if Chris Rock made a joke like that.

    • peanut says:

I agree, people hate her and are looking for a reason to hate her more. There are plenty of comediennes who make a living on this kind of humor and aren’t ripped apart on the blogs. I love that she ripped him a new one. He is a terrible interviewer and never seems to know about who he is interviewing.

    • mercy says:

I don’t think he would make a joke like that, though. He’s bawdy, but he’s also clever. Roseanne in her prime is another example of a comedian who could pull off that kind of humour. Handler is just too base level with her jokes. Her comments about Piers were funny, though. She has her moments, usually in interviews like that one.

      • Elle Kaye says:

        @mercy,

well, there is this from Chris Rock…

“Yeah, I love being famous. It’s almost like being white, y’know?”

        That is racist.

And about Barack Obama and the “blackness” of his name…

“as soon as you hear “Barack Obama”…you expect to see a brother with a spear! Just standing on top of a dead lion! Barack Obama! You expect to see the bass player from the Commodores come out! ”

So, the double standard is alive and well.

      • Cleo says:

OMG, I can’t tell you all the ways in which just comparing Rock to Handler is a sacrilege. First off, even comparing them is ridiculous. In order to have a ‘double standard,’ two basically equal things have to be received in opposite ways.

There is no way, Rock’s ‘white/famous,’ crack (which by the way, is the furthest thing from racist, as it speaks to ‘white privilege,’ – when you’re famous you get treated like you’re white…HELLO??? Anyone home??) nor his Barack Obama joke (subtext how Americans ‘receive’ his name, yet voted him in two terms anyway), compare in any way, shape or form to Handler’s typical racial ridicule.

There is no deeper subtext to Handler’s tweets aside from ridiculing black people to sell her book. There is no commentary about society, or the country or culture (something Rock became famous for) – not that that’s necessary to be funny, but funny and deep is even better.

No, if that was a ‘double standard,’ you’d have posted two equally funny Handler jokes that were worthy of getting the laughs Chris Rock’s did, but for whatever reason…didn’t.

Rock’s white/famous crack, and Handler’s ‘Sidney Poitier must be Nelson Mandela because he is black too, so buy my book,’ do not compare – so there is NO double standard for something that’s really great (Rock), juxtaposed with something awful (Handler).

Who’s next? Maybe you can compare why there’s such a ‘double standard’ for Meryl Streep and Jennifer Aniston. No one ever maligns Streep’s acting like they do Jennifer’s…waaaah. Why did Sophie’s Choice get all those awards, and Aniston’s movie about the Sperm Sample switch didn’t??!!

        @Cleo,
“There is no deeper subtext to Handler’s tweets aside from ridiculing black people to sell her book. There is no commentary about society, or the country or culture (something Rock became famous for) – not that that’s necessary to be funny, but funny and deep is even better.”

THIS. From what I’ve seen, she mostly rattles of cheap shots one after the other. No artistry, no depth, not funny.

    • lucy says:

Agreed 100%, aenflex, peanut, and tricklady (above)! Double standard. People are hostile to Chelsea because she defies the ‘play nice’ expectations society has for females. It’s not even about her sense of humor. See Jeff Ross, Bill Maher.

      • moot says:

@lucy. Um no. Totally wrong. Not a double standard. At. All. There’s a difference between irreverent and unfunny. Most people with a healthy non-racist sense of humour can tell the difference. Most people can also tell when a line is crossed. And plenty of comedians get called on the carpet for improper funny. And it isn’t about not playing nice either. I’ve enjoyed a fair number of comedians who don’t play nice and bring the rude.

If people don’t like Chelsea it’s not because they don’t get irreverent or politically incorrect; it’s because she’s just. Not. Funny. Period. Some of us just don’t see how she’s even a teeny bit funny for a comedian who is paid to be.

      • tricklady says:

Thank you Lucy! And Cleo, comparing Rock to Handler is NOT a sacrilege (google it) Racism is not funny no matter who is doing it and Handler and Rocks joke are both racist PERIOD.

  13. Abbicci says:

If you have to keep pointing out you are a comedian it means you aren’t the slightest bit funny.

If you keep having to defend yourself against accusations of racism chances are you are a racist.

Handler can choke on a bag of dicks. That would be funny. I’d laugh my ass off over that.

  14. Mandy says:

I CANNOT believe I used to like this woman. I hate how she always acts like she is so cool and above it all. She’s just such a b!tch.

  15. ojulia123 says:

    Racism is never funny.

  16. Jayna says:

I’ve heard many times Chelsea’s books are funny. I always meant to read that first one. I enjoy her show if I happen to catch it. I enjoy her round table with a few of her sidekick comics she does on the show. I enjoy her interviews. I even like her opening monologue.

But I don’t find her comedy act funny and have no desire to pay money to see her. She was horrible when she was the host for the VMAs with her comedy routine, and a friend went and saw her comedy act and said it was disappointing.

    • Cleo says:

Yeah, her VMA hosting gig was notoriously panned and savaged by critics. Anytime she has to stand on a stage somewhere, relate to an audience and bring the funny in her own voice, count on a fail. That’s a lot different from reading canned lines in a robotic voice for her 3 minute cable monologues to the tourists visiting her talk show studio.

As for her books? Two words: ghost writer.

      They all use them.

    • Adrien says:

She is funny when she is not being spontaneous. Her books are funny. Her former gag/hidden camera shows were funny.

  17. MissNostalgia says:

And her point is? I have never found her funny; she comes off as a woman who probably was insecure when she was younger and now yearns to be with the “cool women”, she makes friends with any blonde female celebrity of note. Bottom line is she is an unfunny racist comedian. She can commiserate with that other loser, Piers Morgan all she likes, won’t change a thing. The end.

    • Jen says:

She was probably a bully when she was younger and she always will be. There is no hope for her because she doesn’t care. She doesn’t have a conscience.

  18. Sarah says:

what about jeer? Can I jeer?

  19. Megan says:

Ick she is so incredibly gross and not even a little funny.

On the plus side, her burning hate/jealousy of Angelina Jolie never fails to amuse me. She is a racist, C list comedian who has little talent and ZERO beauty, and she thinks that freaking Angelina Jolie, one of the most beautiful and successful women in the world, even bats an eyelash at the things this dog says? No man, she’s too busy helping charities, making films, being a wife and mother, going to the Oscars, winning humanitarian awards, and bringing awareness to breast/ovarian cancer to give a crap.

Chelsea is jealous because next to the Angie she is inadequate and pathetic. Stay bitter Chelsea, I would say you should stop worrying before you get wrinkles, but it’s obviously WAY too late for that.

    • Jen says:

Megan, your comment basically sums up what bullying is all about. I don’t know Angelina Jolie. I don’t know what she’s like or why she does the projects she does or the philanthropy that she does. She might be a nice person and she might not be. I don’t think most people really know that, but there is no doubt she is a huge target for Chelsea Handler and other bullies like her. Are they jealous? I can’t say for sure, but I wish I knew. It’s perplexing to me.

  20. Vilodemeanus says:

Nobody laughs at Chelsea’s jokes because she’s not funny. She’s a nasty, vile person who fucked her way into a career, and is bitter because everyone knows she’s not where she is based on talent. Scumbag. Racist is putting it mildly, and hangs with people just like her, who are also not well liked.

  21. Becky1 says:

I don’t find Chelsea Handler funny but she has the right to joke about whatever and whomever she wants to. Many comedians (of all races) joke about race related issues. Many male comedians make disparaging jokes about women. I may not find these jokes funny but they certainly have the right to make them. If the majority of people are offended they won’t go to their shows, buy their books, etc. and they’ll be out of work. I just can’t get too worked up about something a comedian says. It’s not like she’s the president, a CEO of a large company, an educator, etc-she’s a comedian. Comedians can be offensive sometimes-that’s nothing new.

  22. Adrien says:

You know sometimes I appreciate her no-filter attitude but she’s at times just a mean person. I appreciate that she gives exposure to little known comedians like our former WA neighbor Jo Koy but she’s always making fun of Koy’s Asian heritage. Really awkward and unfunny. Koy had to suck up all her racist comments all the time.

  23. Kate says:

I’m old school black woman and only watch her show when her and Ronie are going at it

When I think of this PC world we live in now, it’s no way All In the Family or for that matter The Jeffersons would have been successful. I remember watching an episode of SNL in the 70’s when Richard Pryor was playing word association game with another comedian. The white dude called him the n-word and he said dead h-word. There were plenty of classic SNL skits that wouldn’t fly now
Give me Joan Rivers, Don Rickles, Paul Mooney, Dave Chapelle and Ralphie May. I like my humor dry and Politically Incorrect.

    • Jen says:

Kate – That’s a good point that I think most people on this thread are missing. Some like it PC, & some don’t. It doesn’t make one person better than the other; they’re just different. If you’re secure with who you are, then who are you to decide what others can think is funny? I think when it comes to comedy it’s ‘whatever floats your boat’. I don’t care for Chelsea Handler that much because I don’t like her personality. She’s too negative for me, but that’s just me. I like my comedy a little more upbeat; I like happy thoughts. lol. but how can I say she’s not funny when obviously someone thinks she is funny or she wouldn’t be where she is.

    • Janet says:

There’s a difference between politically incorrect and nasty. Making crude ethnic and racist remarks about someone else’s children is not politically incorrect, it’s just plain nasty. Even worse, she’s not even remotely funny.

  24. Helvetica says:

I don’t find her funny and her tweets were really distasteful. She always looks and sounds like she is drunk and she has this very abrasive way about her that I find cold and off-putting. She seems to have a hard-on for Angelina Jolie and is always commenting about her to the press. It makes her look like she has no class.

  25. Grant says:

I actually think she’s funny AND I like her more after she went in on Piers the way that she did. If Chelsea is bad, Piers is awful.

  26. Kikky says:

I LOVE the way Chelsea b1tch slapped Piers Morgan. He’s an a$$ and a sexist crap.

  27. GildedLily says:

The largest flaw in her argument? She’s not a comedian. If she were a comedian, she’d be funny.

  28. HoustonGrl says:

    Aggressive b*tch.

  29. clambake says:

Don’t get why people find her funny. I love female comedians but I just don’t find her funny at all.

  30. Norman says:

You know what, I’ve seen her show a few times on E!, I’m not just singing along with the chorus but I can say she is abrasive in her demeanor on the show and she is verbally cruel to those she hates. It is not surprising that her attitude carries out upon those tweets however she meant it to be.
