Chris Pine pleads guilty to DUI charge, his license was suspended for 6 months

As we discussed last week, Chris Pine was arrested and charged with a DUI in New Zealand just after the wrap-party for his latest film, Z for Zachariah. According to witnesses, Chris had been in a good mood at the wrap-party (which took place in some bar) and he had a few beers (that was according to NZ reports). When various people offered to give him a ride home (I’m assuming back to his hotel), Chris declined and drove himself. He was stopped by the police and he blew a .11 blood alcohol level. Which is not really hammered, but buzzed (buzzed driving is still really dangerous). Anyway, Chris was in court today and he pled guilty to the DUI and he came clean about what happened and how sorry he was:

Chris Pine pleaded guilty Monday in a New Zealand court to a charge of drunken driving. The Star Trek actor was fined $93 New Zealand dollars ($79) and had his New Zealand driver’s license suspended for six months during a hearing at the Ashburton District Court.

Police pulled over Pine early on March 1 after he’d attended a party to mark the end of filming on the movie Z for Zachariah which is due for release next year. Fairfax Media reported that Pine, 33, told police he’d consumed four vodka drinks.

Police told the court that a blood test found Pine’s blood-alcohol level was 0.11 percent, which is over New Zealand’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Pine stood silently during the hearing, allowing his lawyer, Marilyn Gilchrist to enter the plea.

According to Fairfax, Gilchrist told the judge that Pine acknowledged he’d made the wrong decision to drive that night. Gilchrist said her client had suffered emotionally and professionally and that the negative publicity had put his acting contracts in jeopardy.

The judge said she accepted Pine was “entirely remorseful,” Fairfax reported.

The Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit star appeared relaxed as he left the courtroom, stopping to sign a couple of autographs for fans who had gathered outside before being driven away. Much of the filming of Z for Zachariah took place on the South Island’s picturesque Banks Peninsula.

Before being pulled over by police, Pine had been at the Blue Pub in Methven with his Icelandic girlfriend, Iris Bjork Johannesdottir.

“The pub was closed to the public later in the evening and approximately 80 actors and crew attended the party, which finished at 3 a.m. on March 1,” the bar said in a statement. “This was a well-controlled party, the cast and crew were friendly and it was a great night, not a wild party.”

The statement said that “Chris Pine did not appear to staff to be intoxicated to a level where intervention might have been warranted.”

[From People]

I like him more for not contesting the arrest or the blood alcohol tests or anything. I mean, I’m not saying he’s blameless or that he doesn’t deserve some shade for driving under the influence – he’s old enough and smart enough to know better – but I also kind of wonder if Chris had a few cocktails over the course of several hours and he honestly thought he was fine to drive. I mean, four vodka cocktails would be a lot to consume over an hour, but over three hours, for a man Pine’s size? Some people might be okay to drive. So, I appreciate that A) Chris wasn’t some drunken mess at the party, B) that he might have made an honest mistake in judging his own level of buzzed-ness and C) that he’s not an entitled douchebag when he got caught doing something wrong.

I still feel sort of guilty for finding him so attractive though. Damn it! I have to keep reminding myself that he dates “lingerie models” and reality stars.

    Good for him 🙂
I am just a bit surprised about his “New Zealander” driving licence? Is Chris Pine a New Zealander?

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      same idea!
      someone need to explain me

    • Just here says:

Nope. He’s American. But you can get your license ‘transferred’ into a New Zealand license if you have an American license. However, you only really need to do that if you’re staying there a year or longer, which I doubt he is, so I don’t understand the significance of suspending his ‘New Zealand license’. Really, $79 fine + a ‘suspension’ is nothing. He walked away with little more than a slap on the hand. That being said, I definitely believe that he underestimated his blood alcohol and felt fine to drive. It’s so easy to make that mistake and heaps of people end up getting nailed by the cops.

    • Lore says:

From what I understand the licence suspension is a normal punishment for those circumstances and the judge wanted to show that Chris was being treated the same as anyone else. He was handed a standard sentence for the crime regardless of his celebrity status or citizenship.

  2. lisa2 says:

He has a good PR/Legal team. This considering what has happened with other celebs was a smart move. Get it out of the press ASAP. By the time people think of it again the 6 months will be over.

  3. Lark says:

I don’t think four vodka drinks is accidentally drinking a little too much and not knowing your limits…I think it’s being an asshole and very irresponsible. It’s vodka, not beer or wine, and anyone with common sense knows it can get you hammered fairly quickly. I can see (as much as I hate it) how someone could have a little too much beer….but not when it comes to hard liquor. Once someone goes over 1 or 2 drinks, they shouldn’t be driving imo (and they shouldn’t be driving in the first place if they’re tiny).

    • Hiddles forever says:

My husband and I take turns when we’re dining out. The one who’s supposed to drive later doesn’t touch alcohol at all. Beer, wine or vodka doesn’t matter. Just water or a juice 🙂

      • Lark says:

I actually think that’s an ideal plan, for the driver to have no alcohol.

      • Green Girl says:

My husband and I do this, too. The DD can drink as much soda, water, coffee and tea as their bladder can handle! We definitely arrange who is the DD in advance, too.

    • danielle says:

Not sure that 4 mixed drinks are that much different from 4 glasses of wine…

    • Poe says:

I’m a 5’3″ female around 130 lbs, and drink Vodka, and I do not get hammered very easily off of it. Given, my drink of choice is Vodka. Each person is different with their tolerance of alcohol, now obviously, it doesn’t excuse him driving under the influence. I’m surprised that he plead guilty though. Guess, he’s not as much as a douche as I thought.

      • EllaM says:

You don’t need to feel drunk to be drunk. Alcoholics have a very high tolerance for alcohol but the alcohol in their blood nevertheless slows down their reactions. If you know someone who’s into video games, let him start Gran Turismo or something like that, play until your lap times are stable and have a drink while you continue playing. You will see how your lap times get worse after just one drink although you don’t feel drunk at all. It’s a very easy way to experience how alcohol influences your reactions without putting other people in danger.

    • FLORC says:

      Lark
It’s not a douche move. It’s just irresponsible. He didn’t hurt anyone and he took full responsibility.

I’m chalking this to a mistake which he isn’t denying.
Drunk driving is bad, but i’m not going to fault him for how he’s handled this.

And many people have driven while over the legal limit. Even just slightly. We wait and drink water, have snacks, but we’re still over.
I’m not trying to make excuses. I’m just saying he’s not an @s$hole for it, but that’s my opinion and not yours.

      • Green Girl says:

I think he’s handled it as well as he could. Maybe this story will give people pause, though? I am sure we all know individuals who think they’re “fine” after a few drinks, but they’re really not. If they can see they are actually over the legal limit, even after just a few drinks over a long period of time, then maybe they’ll rethink their decision to get behind the wheel. At least, I hope.

  4. don't kill me i'm french says:

    never drive when you’re drunk

  5. L says:

Drunk drivers really angers me. If you have to drink then don’t bloody get behind the wheel! Nobody I know would drive the same night (or day for that matter) as they have consumed alcohol. If Chris had been caught in my country he’d be on his way to prison.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t think anyone should drive drunk, but I think sending a first time offender to prison is ridiculous. They took away his driving privileges for 6 months, which I think is fair. If he does it again, he should go to jail and permanently lose his license. Your prisons must be overflowing.

      • Crank says:

Totally didn’t mean to post right here and I don’t know how to delete lol. Oh well, hai!

      • L says:

The mentality surrounding drinking here is different as I stated above, if you decide to drink then most people won’t drive that night. Our legal limit is 0.02 and that doesn’t send you to prison, you’ll be fined and most times lose your license (if you kill someone, prison it is though). He was above 0.1 and that leads to prison here and first offender or not, I think that’s fair.
As for our prisons overflowing (assuming you’re from the US) your numbers are more than 10 times greater than ours per 100000 pop (Swe 67 – USA 716).

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

@L, good point about our prisons. They are certainly overflowing, so that was not the brightest comment of mine.
I still think sending someone to prison for a first time offense when no one was hurt is very harsh, but I can see where you’re coming from.

  6. Darry says:

I can easily sort this all out by offering to be his personal “driver” for the duration of his…er…life. That way he can ditch the worry of ever being drunk behind the wheel AND known only for dating lingerie models in one go.

    • FLORC says:

      Darry
He’s known for more than you know him for. Guy has a lot of big movies under his belt and that number is only growing.

And since he’s not fighting this at all no one will dwel on it and it could likely be forgotten in a very short amount of time. If he fought it it could drag on and get more coverage.

    • Isadora says:

Darry, I think we have found the perfect solution. 😀 Thank you for volunteering, must be a very big sacrifice for you, but you do it for the greater good of course. 😉

  7. Original Tessa says:

I don’t feel sorry for anyone that gets a DUI, but most especially a pampered celebrity. Call a cab or hire a driver, you idiot.

  8. Lori says:

He’s working in a foreign country……….he should have more sense. As someone who was hit by a “drunk” driver I think there needs to be zero tolerance. If you have even one drink you shouldn’t drive. I was jogging with my 6 month old in the jogging stroller and it was 3pm. This man had stopped for a beer on his way home from the job site. It ended up being 3 beers. And I ended up spending 6 weeks in hospital. for 3 f&^king beers. No one is a good judge of their own buzz. And people trying to interpret the laws ends in some big mistakes. One drink means you’re not fit to drive!

  9. Mia4S says:

Well that was handled about as well as it could have been, he’ll be back in my good books soon. I like that he didn’t try for some phony “rehab” deal, just “I screwed up, end of story”.

  10. Izzy says:

I like that he just took responsibility for it. On the other hand, it was a wrap party, it’s not like he was going to be driving around in New Zealand much longer, so it isn’t much of a penalty for him if his US license isn’t suspended, is it?
