Marion Cotillard’s new ‘floating ballerina’ Lady Dior ads: glorious or overdone?

Marion Cotillard

This isn’t exactly a controversial post, so I don’t expect a huge reaction. I simply wanted to write about Marion Cotillard’s new Lady Dior ads because she looks so freaking lovely. This is the Fall-Winter 2014 campaign for the iconic handbags, and I think it’s brilliant. Marion is gliding effortlessly though the air with the aid of a trampoline. She looks like an ethereal ballerina with her hair floating everywhere. Could you pose like that while bouncing up and down? My tongue would be sticking out in an unintentional Miley Cyrus impression.

This is a great campaign and a big win for Dior. The bags look great and the pleated gowns add to the effect of Marion seemingly moving in slow motion. What I really want to know is why Dior can pull off such an effective vibe with Marion, but they fall down (har har) when it comes to the Jennifer Lawrence ads. Poor JLaw’s ads look robotic and awkward even though she is improving as a model.

I know JLaw isn’t the greatest fit for this fashion house, but they clearly want her on board. They recently renewed her contract for three years (for $15-20 million). So I’d love to see JLaw in a campaign similar to this. She’d be flashing a million-watt smile at the thought of bouncing on a trampoline. I need to stop turning this into a JLaw post. I just miss her.

Marion gets all of the best dresses and bags when it comes to Dior. They save all the really good looks for her. Here’s a behind-the-scenes video of this campaign:

She’s lovely and she has that French je ne sais quoi as they say. I think she is pretty in that understated way, sort of like Audrey Tatou.

    • BreeinSEA says:

I love Audrey Tatou! Amelie sealed my forever love for her. I think Marion has that same unique beautiful quality. They are born with such a classy look. Its so unfair. I was born with the looks equivalent of living in the woods like a really terrible explorer.

  2. Dani2 says:

She’s gorgeous in these photos and a better fit for Dior imo than Jennifer (even though I love her).

  3. Mouse says:

The open mouth poses really bug me (like in the first two pics). Otherwise, this is lovely.

  4. embertine says:

Now this is how you do a photoshoot. Clever without being gimmicky, and the dresses/bags aren’t overshadowed. Everything looks fantastic, not least her.

  5. QQ says:

She is so so so Pretty and ethereal always

  6. Ashley says:

When did this turn into a Lawrence post bleh. As for Marion beautiful!

  7. FLORC says:

It’s a nice ad concept and she poses well mid air minus the open mouth. There’s nothing about these photos that makes me give it a second look though. Bland overall.

  8. Abbott says:

Been a while since we’ve seen Marion. THAT FACE. C’mon. Imagine Americas favorite darting Cookie Monster in a gown trying to jump on a trampoline.

  9. Sarah says:

I don’t know. I’m a huge fan of hers but some of these look a little corpse-y. Maybe it’s the drab background. It’s Marion, though so I can’t hate it.

  10. Maum says:

I think it looks corpse-y because of the hair. It’s very Laura Palmer.

I love the retro dresses but not the photos. The open mouth and dead hair are way too distracting for me.

    • j.eyre says:

Oh! Wasn’t yesterday the day Laura Palmer was supposed to return? I liked the pictures before but you just made them much more interesting.

  11. Kiddo says:

The first dress is too Marilyn Monroe-ish and the bag has a heavy feel that is mismatched with the dress. Yes, it stands out, but I feel like the bag wants to be with a business suit.

The ad campaign is okay, but it would have been stunning with a real ballerina, who could have come up with more diverse moves. The clothes and bags change, but the poses are so similar. That said, my favorite look is the burgundy pleated outfit.

  12. Dimebox says:

I love this. I think she looks gorgeous and ethereal.

  13. Helvetica says:

    She is elegance personafied.

    Love the red skirt.

  14. mimi says:

I love this Dior photoshoot mostly because Marion is so breathtakingly gorgeous and graceful in every pic. She is the perfect choice to rep Dior. She wears their clothing with such ease and elegance. If they extended JLaw’s contract for three more years, then they should seriously consider extending Marion’s as well.

  15. Hiddles forever says:

    She is classy and elegant.
    Perfect fit for Dior’s ads

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I just love this campaign. Lovely woman, lovely clothes. So pretty and feminine.

I’m not in love with the bags, but I don’t even care because everything else brings out the five year old inside me who loves all things ballerina.

      • Lady D says:

These are the first bags I have ever seen in my life that I would pay large dollars for. I have 3 purses and I use each 1 or 2 times a year. I’m not really a fan of them but these are just gorgeous.

  16. Immy says:

Love it. Also hearting the quilted bag in the first picture…

  17. Samtha says:

So graceful–look how pointed her feet are, and how elegant her hands are. Every shot just looks lovely.

  18. lucy2 says:

I’ve always found her very beautiful, and these photos are no exception. I like the concept and the results. She is a good fit for Dior.

  19. Liberty says:

Fantastic. She is amazing even in ads. Re the difference between her and JLaw, maybe it’s like this. The director tells her what to do and she does it seamlessly, coming from a family of French actors after all, bred in technique? She can even hold a flawless pose on the trampoline too, feet, hands, everything. Then JLaw, I imagine a scene like the Suntory Time Whiskey ad taping scene from Lost in Translation….some director saying to her “French word french phrase French French comment French sigh!” And she is all, “Okay — What? You guys! I meant it! What?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiQnH450hPM

Bonus: a Cotillard music video for Hawksley Workman someone showed me last year —

  20. bokchoi says:

She should stick to modelling, because she is clearly very good at it. “Acting” not so much…she was TERRIBLE in both Inception and The Dark Knight. No idea why everyone raved about her, unless they were cutting her slack because she is just so darn pretty.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

She’s not good in Nolan movies( she’s not at ease in it) but she’s great in James Gray with Joaquin Phoenix movie and some french movies and she won an Oscar for an “all prothesis -lip sync” character in a french movie La Vie En Rose

  21. Tamara says:

Marion is so gorgeous and ethereal! Agree with everyone, she’s a perfect Dior girl.

And it’s not even about being French, both Natalie Portman and Charlize Theron are and have been (in Charlize’s case) wonderful spokespeople for Dior and they’re american. It’s just JLaw that is the sore thumb, it really annoys me as a fashion fan that someone like her is chosen for Dior when she doesn’t seem to like fashion that much, doesn’t seem to want to talk about her dresses on the red carpet and just seems to be in it for the money. She’s made it clear in the past that she’s about being an actor and not about walking the red carpet or promoting films and that’s great, but then don’t accept a multimillion dollar contract! Really gets my goat and after seeing Marion in these ads, it reminds me of why I loved Dior.

  22. Christina says:

    These are simply heavenly!!

  23. M.A.F. says:

I want that whole outfit in the second/third photo (the red/white dress with the flower bag). Love it.

  24. CharlotteS says:

She’s perfect for Dior, so pretty.

  25. Tiffany says:

I think that it might have something to do with the photographer as well. That looked like Patrick Demarchelier in the video. Did he do the ones for Lawrence because the styles were…different.

  26. Camille (The Original) says:

    Very pretty, love it.
