Kristen Stewart’s Chanel Paris-Dallas ads revealed: interesting or awful?

KS1

Back in December, Kristen Stewart was named as the new “face” of Chanel’s Paris-Dallas Collection. She actually went to Dallas for the announcement, and she got to hang out with Karl Lagerfeld (again). Following that, Kristen took some friends to Paris for a few days while she (presumably) shot the campaign and did some shopping – she was spotted around Paris carrying a $3400 Chanel bag, so it was totally a business trip for her.

Anyway, these are some of the first images from the campaign. Thoughts? First of all, these aren’t the official leaks from the campaign, at least I don’t think so. They come via Instagram, and I would imagine they are photos of the print ad campaign, just because the images don’t seem to be the best quality. Or maybe this is how the ads really look – sort of blurry and gritty.

Regarding the clothes… very fringy, very “Southwest”. Personally, I don’t care for that look – I’ve never been into “cowboy chic” or whatever and I don’t think I’ve ever owned anything with a fringe. But if you like that look, I would imagine that this is probably okay, or even wonderful. I do kind of love those black and white cowboy boots in the one shot. As for how Kristen looks… it’s not bad. I actually think she looks much better in these shots than she ever did for her Balenciaga campaigns.

    Fugly

Look at Karl trying to convince us that that shit is happening though

  2. Zandy says:

    Awful clothes …..

  3. RobN says:

Wow, that’s bad. From Kristen to the clothes to the styling, it’s bad. Kristen ought to take a few dollars from her stash and buy herself a new expression.

    • MeganDraper says:

I don’t know what to think. The clothes are going to look awful….blame Karl for that. Kristen has no expressions in the photos. Wasn’t she given direction? It’s the same look in every photo so far. The one photo with the toothpick, that’s ok but the others….so blah

    • Miss Bennet says:

Even if Miss Stewart had got it into her head to have a facial expression it wouldn’t have mattered. The heavy handed photo shopping would have removed all traces of it. Cripes!! She looks like a corpse!

      • LadySlippers says:

I was going to say the same thing.

They photoshopped those pics to death. And she looks like death too.

    • Jess says:

Remember she isn’t a hollywood typical actor who sell herself for fashion houses. She is not a faker. She is the most real actor out there so now not only she has contract with balenciaga but chanel too. Two fashion houses. I think her days on balenciaga are counted and this chanel campaign won’t go foward but she the biggest hypocritical in the business. She can’t get the twilight spotlight and money anymore so this will have to do. Lets not even comment on the pictures. She looks dead as always. She doesn’t even put an effort to it. This is just sad. Karl is embarasing this brand with this offensive campaign

      • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Yes and why not use a real model like Joan smalls, Bianca balti, or Maricarla Boscono. If she’s such a great actress, why doesn’t she do Shakespeare in the Park.

  4. stormtrooper says:

badass! also, those are not boots but Chanel socks worn with regular men chanel shoes!! I WANT. A++++

  5. Lucy says:

I like them and think she looks good. There! That le my good deed done for the day I said something nice about k-stew

    • Tiffany :) says:

I like these too, a lot. I like the way the make up was done and the lighting…it has a civil war type vibe to it. The clothes aren’t my thing, but I don’t think they were going with “wearable” here, its stylized.

  6. booboocita says:

Sorry, but as a native Arizonan and lifelong Westerner, I just gotta say … ugh.

    • InvaderTak says:

Native Texan: with you all the way. Only upper middle class housewives from Plano are going to be tacky enough to wear these. Why do they always use the stereotypical “western” look when there are real styles that look fabulous and are western? Lack of actual research in my opinion. Ad some of the pieces that are native American influenced boarder on being offensive.

    • Rachel says:

I join you in your ugh. WTF. It’s like Daniel Boone meets … I don’t know. Cleopatra? The eye makeup. The corn rows. The cheap, “I’m in one of those old timey photo shops & I’m going to dress as a westerner and have my picture taken” clothes. Just all of it. Bad.

    • Dimebox says:

This! Another Texan here, and my husband is a rancher who would laugh himself silly at these looks. In Santa Fe he referred to one outfit we saw as the “get that cowsh*t away from my real boots look.” And my grandmother would have gladly walked 100 miles just to snatch a toothpick from my mouth if I had lost my mind and left one there.

  7. Jaderu says:

If you hadn’t said it was KStew I wouldn’t have recognized her. Maybe it’s the photoshop or filter.
She looks like Big Bird on crack in the first photo.

  8. skipper says:

Someone actually paid her to do these shots? These look like those old-western type pics you get done at Old Town where you pic out your own outfit and they shoot them in black and white with “Wanted! Dead or Alive!” underneath. These are bad!

  9. Mylene - Montreal says:

    i like that

  10. Aysla says:

I think her hair and makeup look great, but the clothes are awful…

  11. Annie says:

Karl should just retire… He’s completely out of touch with reality, his past few collections have been so fug. I think this might actually be worse than s/s14

    • Lark says:

I think it was Adele E. or someone was wearing one of the dresses from this line, and literally looked like big bird. This collection is awful. To be fair, I think the boots/toothpic photo is really good but it’s less to do with the outfit and more with the shoes and whoever did KStew’s hair and directed her pose.

  12. Insomniac says:

I hate the clothes. Not Kristen’s fault, but they are fugly.

And did they airbrush out her HUGE baby bump? (ducks and runs)

  13. Luisa says:

Why all the hate? I think she looks amazing.

    • Lark says:

I don’t think it’s hate, but the whole line is very meh. Karl just hasn’t been good lately imo. There is one pic I really like there, but the whole line with the feathers and fringe is just meh.

    • Josephine says:

I don’t know – the ears are just really distracting for me. I think of fashion as inspiring and happy, and this is just so darn depressing. She’s an actress, not a model, and it really shows.

  14. Lark says:

The one with the toothpick and the cowboy boots is great imo. The rest, meh. But if it was “leaked,” these may be outtakes and not final images. However, the whole western inspired line has been god-awful. It’s the “big bird” dresses that some women have been snapped wearing on the red carpet as of late.

  15. Stacey says:

Wouldnt be caught dead in any of that

  16. j says:

Might not be the absolute best “model” shots, but certainly more interesting than anything Emma Watson did for Lancome or Emma Stone did for Revlon or Jennifer Lawrence did for Dior.

I’m tired of the smile/model/perfect skin/perfect face. I don’t mind these at all.

    • stormy says:

Lol, you wouldn’t be a true kstew fan unless you found a way to trash Jennifer L. and at least one other well liked actress. Congrats, Kristen and her fans everywhere thank you.

      • Lark says:

Um, maybe not generalize all Kristen Stewart fans? I’m a Kristen Stewart fan and I like Emma Watson & Emma Stone a lot (better than Kristen, actually). I disagree with what she’s saying, but I understand her POV as Kaiser titled it “interesting or awful.” These aren’t meant to be “pretty”, classic, or feminine images and some people like that (although it has nothing to do with the models, and more with the art direction). It’s like how I loved Emma Watson’s pants/dress combo that she wore recently more than the fairytale looks.

  17. Melody says:

Are we sure this isn’t a leak of Season 4 of American Horror Story?

  18. Dani2 says:

Hate the styling plus the clothes, I’m not her biggest fan but I know for sure that she can look a whole better than this. Even on the runway, this line looked ridiculous.

  19. Hello Kitty says:

Awful. K-Stew has no presence. All I see are loud tacky clothing. K-Stew could be swapped out for some generic young model and it would not make a difference.

  20. Ella says:

Don’t love all the clothes, but some of the jackets and the t-shirts are cool. I do, however, think Stewart looks awesome in these pics. Very edgy and a perfect choice for this line. I agree, better than the Balenciaga campaign (at least the first one). So while I can’t see myself buying any of this, even if I could afford it, I think these ads are great.

    • Luisa says:

      I agree.

      • mimi says:

While the clothes aren’t my cup of tea…I’m a stay at home mommy who is in yoga pants as I type this…LOL, I do like the pics and think Kristen looks amazing in them. I love all the braids in her hair and the dramatic smokey eye makeup. The pics have an old fashioned~antique feel to them. Someone told me once that the reason people didn’t smile in portraits way back in the early days of photography was because of how long it took to take each photograph. So people tended to stick with their natural, unsmiling, rested faces instead of trying to a hold a smile for the lengthy time it took to take the picture. That’s what these pics remind me of.

I noticed JenLaw didn’t smile and had the same expressionless, open-mouthed pose in most of the pics for her new Dior ad and I liked those alot as well. Just like the runway fashion shows in Paris, London and NYC…the models aren’t grinning from ear to ear like a loon. Their facial expressions are usually stoic with an air of aloofness. So, I’m not going to cut Kristen down for doing exactly what others modeling high end fashions do all the time.

For someone like me who will never own any Chanel or Dior or Balenciaga other than their perfumes, I love the weird, fantasy element of high end fashion photoshoots like this one even if I would never wear any of the pieces myself.

    • Miffy says:

      +1
I think these are interesting shots. I like them as overall images. I think she’s found a good niche for her moody default face. She looks good here.

  21. MrsBPitt says:

WOW…She looks horrible and the clothes are horrible…like super duper, unbelievably, atrocious, horrendous, disgusting, gross, crappy…I can’t think of any more adjectives to describe this mess… feel free to add to my list…

  22. Dri says:

Sorry, but this girl doesn’t have any charisma.

  23. hmmm says:

    I would be mortified.

  24. PunkyMomma says:

She looks great, I like the second pic in particular, but the clothes are so Annie Oakley. Maybe Karl can hitch a ride with Anna Wintour on the “Jumped Shark Express”.

  25. Shijel says:

I dig it, aside from the big bird sleeve pic.

  26. Ice Queen says:

Sorry, but she has zero appeal to me. The same face on every pic. If it were only one picture, it would’ve looked interesting…

  27. Reece says:

It’s imitation costume-y at best. Like something I’d get downtown in a back alley of the garment district.
Kristen looks weighed down by all of it.

  28. Nan says:

Love styling and photos. I think it is first time I can see why she is offered such modelling option. Just wish some of it would translate into her personal style.

  29. Nicolette says:

She’s a pretty girl, what the hell did they do to her?

  30. Hubbahun says:

Well, better than the Balenciaga ones.

  31. Aria says:

I prefer Wallmart Lively. This is just awful.

  32. Lolol says:

Another dead eyed “model” like Kim and kanye. Blah

  33. People irk me... says:

She is just so…. BLAH… It’s like I’m watching a western twilight in pictures. I love the boots though.

  34. Who knew? says:

Who knew that the looks of Annie Oakley, Ziggy Stardust, and Pocahontas could gel so perfectly together?

  35. Ziggy Stardust + Pocahontas = says:

    Daughter of the Moon, Nakomis

  36. bns says:

    She’s already irrelevant.

  37. Ziggy Stardust + Pocahontas = says:

Ground control to Major Tom…. Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

  38. Bex says:

I’m seeing Allie Lohan in the face in those pix. Generic bored model look?

  39. Melymori says:

IMO she looks great, the clothes not so much… the only thing a notice with her is that she has the same face/pose in all her photoshoots but on this one is more obvious, specially in the last one in the post. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a boring thing.
Either way, if I had the money to buy Chanel, I wouldn’t buy any piece on this line judging by this shoot.

  40. OhDear says:

I think just one of them would have been good, having all of them is repetitive (clothes aren’t that interesting, facial expression same throughout).

  41. ORLY says:

Poor woman. This is just awful.

  42. Alin says:

The boots are coll… but are that boots? Looks like shoes + leg warmers?

The collection is meh… too much feathers and curtains.

The only good pic IMo is the 3rd one. Make-up and hair go very good with the undertone “dark, wild and native”. It´s typical Lagerfeld, more art than advert.

  43. Lara Morgana says:

    Horrible clothes. Just horrible.

Kristen looks good. Love her hair and she has the most amazing eyes.

  44. Nikki says:

Wow that’s some “choice” clothing, not sure we’ll ever see those in real life? She just has one zoned out expression – both modelling and acting. Although I have to admit if they dressed me like that I think I’d look bored to death and ready to leave too!

  45. jhava says:

same face, every shot. like head turns but face does not change. they could have taken one and just copy and pasted her head. would’ve been cheaper but same effect

  46. Miffy says:

Gotta say, I like these. I know people are criticising her one expression but given that they went for that kitsch-y old Western portrait style (which I’m totally digging for a fashion campaign, don’t even ask me why, I’m just loving it) maybe the one somber expression is what they were going for? As in mimicking portrait photography in the 1800s? Just my two cents. I think this works. Like hell would I be seen in anything she’s wearing but I can say the same for the last few seasons of Lagerfeld’s offerings, but I like these photos.

    • mimi says:

Exactly! I wrote something similar just now regarding the old portrait photography feel these pics seem to embody.

    • Jeje says:

If we were talking about an actress who isn’t known to be very one note you would have a discussion. Kristen have the same picturrs taken for chanel, balenciaga, movies, magazines, paparazzi.

      • Miffy says:

Well you could argue that if they were going for a one note look then they found their girl. Somber and moody is her niche, if it’s what they were going for what’s the issue?

Her previous work was the previous campaigners’ project, I don’t see how it has any baring on these photos unless you, personally, are just bored of seeing her face. She pulls the exact same expression as every other young, high fashion, too-bored-to-be-here model with the added benefit of her Twihard fanbase. Granted, I’m not sure how massive a grouping that is now, but she has fans. Models just starting in the industry wouldn’t have that draw. So if she can perform the exact same job as any other model with the extra feature of drawing public attention, what’s she doing wrong?

For what it’s worth, I’m not a fan of hers, I can’t watch her in films but she fulfills the brief here. I don’t see the problem.

  47. Tig says:

Dear goodness no- this is like a cross bet 90s Ralph Lauren and Guess. Seriously, did his cat design these clothes?

Not feeling the styling either- the clothes are wearing her. Wonder if this is a trial balloon and a different set of photos will debut soon?

I really wonder how long bef Karl L is made designer emeritus- they need new blood ASAP.

  48. C says:

I don’t hate the clothes – some of them look kind of cool and edgy, and would probably work for a lot of people if worn one at a time with simpler pieces. But I do worry that some of the feathery-looking stuff veers into Native American-inspired territory; having spent his whole life in Europe, Karl may not understand the fraught relationship between the Native Americans’ tragic history and the tribal-chic trend that’s going on right now. If he takes this collection further, I hope he’ll keep that in mind before getting TOO adventurous.

  49. Source says:

Dead-eyes does it again. I guess. If you want some BRF and nothing behind the eyes to wear your hideous “fashion” that if they sold it at WalMart, people would wonder if this was some kind of joke, then yeah, this is an excellent campaign.

I mean, if this stuff wasn’t on the runway, would anyone take it seriously?

  50. Moo says:

I like it. However, it doesn’t look like her.

  51. aquarius64 says:

These outfits are horrible. In the first pictures Stewart looks like she’s channeling Big Bird.

And what about her movie career? What about that Gitmo movie? Has her Mini-Coopering hurt her so much in the industry all this anti-Glamazon can get are modelling gigs?

    • Luisa says:

She’s in a movie with Julianne Moore that’s filming in NYC called Ask Alice. In the fall she filmed a movie called The Clouds of Sils Maria with Juliette Binoche.

      • mimi says:

        @Luisa

There’s also Anesthesia with Sam Waterston and Glenn Close which she filmed this past winter. After she wraps up Still Alice with Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin, she has American Ultra with Jesse Eisenberg, Uma Thurmans and John Leguizama. It seems she’s making some very interesting and exciting film choices where she gets to work with some of Hollywood’s most talented actors. Clouds of Sils Maria is even rumored to be heading to Cannes in May. This past January, Camp X-Ray was selected to appear at Sundance and while the film received mixed reviews, Kristen’s performance was singled out and praised very highly by some of the most respected film critics around.

Sorry to burst some bubbles around here but it looks like Kristen is here to stay and is doing exactly what she loves and has been doing even before her Twilight success…make small but interesting indie films with some of the most talented people in film. If this bothers some, then they simply shouldn’t follow her or her career as closely as they obviously have been. Writing mean-spirited, insulting comments about her all over the web is wasted energy and has zero impact on her career. But if this is what some people enjoy doing…so be it.

    • Nina W says:

Yes, she clearly damaged her career with Mini-Coopergate. Her acting career will go nowhere if she doesn’t get a couple of good films out there that people actually see.

  52. moon says:

I love Karl, but I think he’s finally losing the plot.

  53. Tails says:

I think she looks pretty but the only pic I like is the one where she’s sitting down. Also not digging the grainy filters on these pics.

  54. Nina W says:

    A freaking Holly Hobby nightmare.

  55. Thank You says:

Thank all you Rob Pattinson fans for all the kind comments. Just love you all. Well Rob created such a classy fan base didn’t he, good luck and thanks again.

  56. aquarius64 says:

@mimi – Kristen’s cheerleaders fail to notice that her film choices do not include any major blockbusters, and frankly not due to choice. Stewart almost torpedoed two franchises with her foolishness in 2012, despite what her defenders say. The movies were saved because the studios’ damage control departments did their jobs – NOT HER. They still haven’t start filming SWATH 2, most likely Universal is waiting for more time to pass in hopes the Mini-Coopering doesn’t come up in press junkets. The studio is also waiting on Chris Hemsworth’s schedule to free up. They’re not waiting on HER. Stewart lost some of her standing when US Weekly busted her with her married SWATH director – WHO IS EQUALLY GUILTY and responsible for his reversal of fortune in his career. (I still can’t believe they were both dumb enough to do this nonsense out on an open road.) She’s still doing penance by doing smaller films and the modelling gigs to keep the money coming in. Nothing wrong with that, just don’t make it sound like studios are scrambling to have her front or be a part of multi-million dollar movies; or she’s “choosing” smaller roles. Her “momentary indiscretion” will stay with her forever, the key is how Kristen is going to work this out.

    • mimi says:

      @aquarius64

Nobody, except hardcore Kristen Stewart haters are STILL bringing up the cheating incident which is fast approaching the 2 year mark! Trust me, Hollywood doesn’t care as much as you obviously do that Kristen was caught kissing her married director. Especially 2 years later!!! Seriously, it’s time to let it go. It never was your burden to carry in the first place.
