Lupita Nyong’o in Giambattista Valli at ‘Fresh Faces’ event: lovely or unflattering?

wenn21256647

Wow, this is Lupita Nyong’o’s first red carpet event since winning her Oscar. If you don’t count going to Paris for the MiuMiu show, which… yes, that was a public event, but it wasn’t like she walked a carpet. Anyway, these are photos from Marie Claire’s “Fresh Faces” party at the Soho House in LA last night. Lupita wore this flowery Giambattista Valli Fall 2013 Couture dress which… eh. Jessica Biel wears a lot of Valli, so much so that I always associate Biel with the label. I do think Lupita pulls this off more than any other actress could though. It’s a cute look, I suppose. I’m more interested in what’s going on with Lupita’s hair! But she always looks beautiful. (Update: Lupita is wearing earrings and a ring by Graziela Gems)

Elle Fanning in Versace Fall 2014. Beautiful. Truly. It’s a little mature for her, but she is 16 years old and costarring in a movie with Angelina Jolie, so maybe she’s aiming for a more mature look.

wenn21256623

Kate Mara wore red too – this is Christian Dior. I don’t like it that much, mostly because I don’t think it suits her petite figure. It’s such a heavy, almost matronly look on such a young woman.

wenn21256641

Jaimie Alexander in… unknown. It’s a pretty ensemble. Mostly I’m just happy that wide-leg trousers are coming back into style. I’m so over the skinny-pants look.

wenn21256653

And finally, The Kardashification of Naya Rivera was there. Most of you are saying she looks like a Kardashian now, but I’m still saying that she’s aiming for a mini-J.Lo look. Naya has had A LOT of plastic surgery over the past year, including some new boobs… which you can’t really see in her Philosophy top. Still… why did she mess with her face so much?

    I think she’s (Nyong’o) trying to grow her hair out. The “in between” length is ALWAYS problematic for most people (whether it’s a straight, curly or extremely curly hair).

    “And finally, The Kardashification of Naya Rivera was there. Most of you are saying she looks like a Kardashian now (…)”

    But we all know that what she really needs in order to fully achieve that is a proper golden shower.

    • blue marie says:

      Ha ha, you were missed Eve.

    • V4Real says:

      I just want to know why must Lupita’s stylist insist on dressing her like she’s Elle Fanning’s age.

      Not her best look and The Gumby hairstyle needs to return back to the 90’s.

      • magpie says:

        This is what I thought. Lupita and Elle should trade dresses.

      • Curious Cole says:

        Thank you 4Real! Lupita’s figure is too athletic to pull off that dress, she looks like she’s playing dress up. Sophisticated lines suit her much better.
        I was a bit shocked to see Elle’s dress, they should have switched.

  2. Claire says:

    Elle is a spetacular actress. After maleficent she will be fighting for every single female role aged 16 to 23 or so. She is the front-runner for Sofia Copola version of “The Litle Mermaid”

    Dakota take that.

    • Jen says:

      I haven’t really seen Elle be “spectacular” in anything. She is good, obviously, but I’ve never been blown away by her. Saorsie Ronan is still the best in her age group.

      • Claire says:

        Elle is only 16. After Atonement Ronan did nothing impressive and if you consider Ronan and elle in the same agre group I also can say Lawrence and Ronan to be in the same group age, so Lawrence is way better then Ronan.

      • harpreet says:

        Watch Ginger and Rosa, god, her accent was so good, she deserved some award love for that film.

      • Tatjana says:

        Saoirse is much better than Jennifer, IMO.

      • Jen says:

        Saorise was amazing in Hanna, and most recently How I Live Now. And she’s only 19.

        Elle in Somewhere, We Bought a Zoo, Super 8 – fine performances but nothing special. I haven’t seen Ginger and Rosa though.

      • V4Real says:

        I’m joining this debate. Ronan kicks ass in anything she is in. She was great in “The Lovely Bones and I wanted to be her in “Hanna” I haven’t seen the Grand Budapest Hotel but it’s on my list. I was hoping she would have been cast as The Scarlet Witch. Yes I know it’s a superhero film but I’m still somewhat of a comic book geek.

        @Tatjana I agree, she’s a much better actress than JLaw. We must remember, not everything is based on talent in Hollywood. As they say it’s 10% talent and 90% luck. I was surprised to find out she’s from NY

      • minime says:

        I have to agree with that. I have never seen anything spectacular from Elle, but I would like to and I believe she might reach it. On the other hand, Ronan is really something else. She was also so incredible in “The Lovely Bones”. She is a deep actress.

      • Dani2 says:

        IMO, Chloe Moretz/Saoirse Ronan/Elle Fanninb are stronger actresses than Jennifer Lawrence/Emma Watson/Kristen Stewart. They really seem to be able to transform into a character.

      • Alex says:

        @ dani2 Chloe Moretz, you must be joking! She’s funny, yes, but a good actor, never.

      • manta says:

        @claire, if your definition of impressive is big BO numbers,maybe Saoirse Ronan didn’t score big in that department.However she has built for herself a very strong resumé, picking very interesting projects and directors.
        In my opinion, sharing the lead with Cate Blanchett and being brilliant doing so is impressive (in Hanna).
        Chosing to work with Peter Weir in the underrated The way back and delivering a haunting performance is impressive. Byzantium was not perfect but you couldn’t turn your eyes from her.

    • AlexandraJane says:

      Do the sisters fight for roles? They always seemed so sweetly supportive of each other. Tho I guess there will always be natural competition within a sector.

    • Hannah says:

      Let’s not pit sisters against each other!

    • Claire says:

      Elle is going to be in a massive box-office hit and even if she is not the lead I am sure she is going to have a big push in her career.

      • Mia4S says:

        I’m not so sure about that. Alice in Wonderland made over a billion dollars but no one is green lighting a big budget on Mia Wasikowska’s name. It’s a complicated thing as to who breaks out. Always interesting to speculate though. She may also head to university like Dakota to wait out the transition years.

      • Claire says:

        Oh Dear. maleficent is going to be huge. Everyone I know wants to see the movie. From kids to teens and young adults. Its the most talked about movie excluding the Franchises.

      • Jen says:

        I totally forgot that Mia was even in that dreadful Alice in Wonderland movie. I am still so confused about how something so awful and garish made SO MUCH????

        I don’t know anyone who really cares about Maleficient either.

      • Eleanor Zissou says:

        I don’t know anyone who wants to see Maleficent.
        My dear God, Mia Wasikowska is an amazing actress. Along with Carey Mulligan, she is probably the most talented actress in the 24+ bracket.

      • Eleanor Zissou says:

        I don’t know anyone who will see Maleficent either.

        I posted twice. Why can’t I see my original comment?

    • Chinoiserie says:

      Hopefully she will not be playing little mermaid. It would be a strange for same actress to play two fairytale princesses.

    • mercy says:

      I first saw Elle when she was just a tiny girl in a movie called The Nines. She was impressive even back then.

      Agree with all the Saoirse love! Saw Grand Budapest for the third time last weekend. She is a such a fine actress, and a real beauty.

      • Violet says:

        Saoirse is very gifted and I’m happy she is finally working in movies worthy of her talents. She fit perfectly in Wes Anderson world.

  3. Sabrina says:

    Lupita looks great, but her or her stylist need to stop matching her shoes & dress exactly.

    • Loopy says:

      I know , that is so bridesmaidish!

    • FLORC says:

      And her eyeshadow. It’s not as painted on as Osccar season, but it’s obvious enough.

      And that dress and silhouette is much too young for her. Elle and her should have swapped dresses.

  4. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    I’m not sure that’s her silhouette, though I may be projecting because I’m not too excited to see it come back in. Because it’s unflattering and not really age appropriate for me. I guess it’s all about me. I know that must be fascinating for all of you.

    • I’m with you and I have no problem making it about you, or us.
      Is that “tea dress” or is it too short to qualify?
      Wh’evs. It sucks and not many women can pull it off IMO.
      Not even sure I love it on Lupita.

  5. bns says:

    Everyone looks terrible. Elle Fanning’s look is way too mature for her, so she doesn’t pull it off.

    Lupita’s look is a little too twee for my taste and I can’t believe that her stylist hasn’t fixed her shoe situation yet.

  6. Jessica says:

    Elle looks like she’s wearing a slinky nightgown.

  7. LadyMTL says:

    Lupita looks gorgeous as always…from the neck up. I’m not crazy for the dress, it looks way too stiff and from the side gives her an unflattering silhouette.

    I do like Dakota Fanning’s outfit but man, do her feet look sore in those shoes.

  8. Alex says:

    Oh dear, I’m afraid Lupita’s charm has worn off for me. She doesn’t even look pretty anymore. Looking at these pictures makes wonder why I was so infatuated by her during the awards season.

    • V4Real says:

      Because that’s what Hollywood does. They take the next so called it girl package and market her so well and then parade her in your face until they have you convinced that she is the best thing that has happen since touchtone phones. Her charm is starting to faulter a bit quicker than most because she is not constantly working to remain a hot item.

      • Chinoiserie says:

        These it girls always bother me. It seems there has to be one every awards season and it is mostly based on who the studios decide to push and being new and nothing else.

    • Eleanor Zissou says:

      Mine wore off when I started to follow her on instagram. Selfie after selfie with a few pictures of her nails. It seems so juvenile for a 31year old.

  9. Audrey says:

    I like it more than a lot of her Oscar season looks honestly.

    Her hair is rough but maybe she’s growing it out. They put too much oil in it ugh

  10. Mia4S says:

    Love the dress, hate the hair. I think because her face is so ridiculously gorgeous I like her with very short hair. Nothing to distract.

    Ummm, is that the girl from Glee? She looks…different.

  11. Jen says:

    Lupita’s hair is tragic.

    Elle is the only one who looks good.

  12. Tatjana says:

    How can someone as beautiful as Lupita end up looking so awful?

  13. QQ says:

    Why is Kate Mara a Thing?

    There I said It!!

    Everyone looks “middling” to “so so” to “No”

  14. HHazel says:

    Boring all of them, Ella and Lupita should’ve switched. And why does Lupita keep picking awful shoes?

  15. Renee28 says:

    This is just another in a long line of bad outfits Lupita has worn. I never understood the hype surrounding her fashion. Jaime is the only one who looks decent.

  16. Illyra says:

    Good lord, her hair. Yikes.

  17. MaryJane says:

    Nope, not feeling this look at all on LuLu….

  18. mytbean says:

    What has changed about Kate Mara’s face? It’s an improvement but I cannot figure out what exactly is different from her House of Cards/American Horror Story days.

  19. Nana says:

    Lupita looks pretty, love the dress but her stylist needs a good lesson on shoes.

    Elle looks the best head to toe for me.

    • LadySlippers says:

      Agreed.

      I love that dress! But not feeling the shoes either (actually not liking anyone’s shoes here).

  20. Prudence says:

    The only one who looks good is Elle. As for Lupita–loved her in the film, but the endless Oscar campaign turned me off.

  21. Emma - the JP Lover says:

    I can’t wait to read the comments the next time Jennifer Aniston steps out in something similar to this … which she has numerous times since 2008.

    Lupita looks incredible! and what’s with the comments about shoes matching her dresses. Did I miss something? Isn’t that what our mothers taught us to do? Is the goal now to got out in shoes that ‘don’t’ match our dresses?

  22. Dani2 says:

    I love Lupita and I’m still crossing my fingers that she has a long and prosperous career in Hollywood just like her white contemporaries but this look is too cutesy for me. She’s 30, not 17. She can look a lot edgier and more grown up than this.

  23. AlmondJoy says:

    Looks like naturally curly hair to me… Mine has a similar curl pattern. The only difference is its much longer than Lupita’s. It’s amazing that when a person wears their hair as it naturally grows out of their head, it’s compared to a dead animal.

  24. Kiddo says:

    I feel like Elle and Lupita should switch dresses or something. The dress is cute, but I’m getting a Little Bo Peep vibe.

  25. AlmondJoy says:

    Lupita’s natural hair looks beautiful. There’s no making you guys happy, my goodness. When a woman wears a wig or extensions, she’s bashed. When a woman wears her natural hair, she’s bashed. Im wearing my natural curls today and my hair is similar to Lupita’s, its just much longer. I would hate to hear what you would say about me!

    With that aside, I think all the ladies in this post look lovely… with the exception on Naya Rivera. She was such a beauty before all the surgery.

    • Jen says:

      There’s nothing wrong with her natural hair. It’s the way it’s styled that’s tragic. The wet mohawk look with the curls falling down the front? Girl no.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        Many of my friends wear their hair the same way, so I’ve grown quite accustomed to it. I think it’s cute.

      • LL2 says:

        @Jen

        Are you an expert on styling natural hair? If you go to natural hair blogs, you will see all kinds of hairstyles including the one Lupita is wearing. Just because you are not familiar with it does not mean its unattractive.

      • Jen says:

        There are plenty of hairstyles that are unattractive. Like what even are you trying to say? I’m familiar with mullets, and they’re hideous. Kaiser is familiar with bangs, and she thinks they’re hideous. Different styles work on different faces. What does knowing anything about black women’s natural hair have to do with it? It’s a bad hair style that doesn’t look good on her.

      • LL2 says:

        @Jen

        I wouldn’t wear her hairstyle but it actually does look good on her. She pulls it off really well. You are not familiar with it, that’s why you say it does not look good. You don’t have to like it but to speak as if you have an idea how a person should style natural hair when you are unfamiliar with the basics of styling natural hair is something else.

      • Jen says:

        Considering I live with two black women, I’m very aware of what natural hair can look like. My roommates usually wear flatting hairstyles, in my opinion.

        Lupita’s hair in this instance is not flattering, in my opinion. I still don’t understand which part you’re getting all huffy about?

      • LL2 says:

        @Jen

        So your issue is that Lupita doesn’t wear the same hairstyles your roommates do? Should I criticize Elle Fanning for being a bleached-blonde, you can see her roots, and not a red-head? I don’t get your point. You don’t like her hairstyle, fine. Either way, Lupita has pulled it off really well.

      • LL2 says:

        @Jen

        I take it seriously because women with natural hair styles still face prejudice in the workplace. Just recently, the military banned several natural hairstyles. The hairstyles were not affecting their ability to do their jobs or any other objective reason, someone just decided they didn’t like it. An officer with natural hair was discussing this on MSNBC over the weekend and stated that once her military colleagues were educated about natural hair care, they became supportive of her desire to get the ban overturned. Most of the time, criticisms of natural hairstyles come from a lack of knowledge.

      • Jen says:

        Uhhhhhh do you read the comments here? Maybe not in this exact post, but white/brown/yellow/black celebrities are criticized all the time if their hair looks a mess. HOW IS THAT A PROBLEM? Plenty of natural hairstyles are AWESOME. This particular one, particularly on Lupita, looks like crap. You’re reading way too into it, good gracious.

      • LL2 says:

        @Jen

        You are entitled to your opinion. If you don’t like her hairstyle, good don’t wear it. But many people who actually wear natural hairstyles liked it. Furthermore, Lupita’s hairstylist is actually one of the best in the business. He knows what is he doing. I was reading the positive comments on instagram yesterday. You are not familiar with many natural hairstyles are not judging the style objectively, that is a fact and that is all I’m saying.

    • Dani2 says:

      I was going to disagree that people were bashing her hair but after reading that comment about the “dead curly animal” on Lupita’s head, i really can’t.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        Yeah that was a terrible comment. I think Kaiser deleted it because I can see my response but not the original comment that was made.

    • lw says:

      That is NOT Lupita’s natural hair. She is wearing some sort of wiglet, and it looks ridiculous. Looks like some sort of clip on piece. I understand that her stylists want to keep changing her look for photo calls, but this is just bad on every level.

      • LL2 says:

        @lw
        You clearly are not familiar with styling natural hair, if you were, you would know there is nothing bad about her hairstyle. Sometimes, hair-pieces are used when one is transitioning from short to longer hair. Her hair texture and cut looks fine to those of us in the know.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        LW: That really doesn’t make a difference to me, as its the same texture and curl pattern that many African and African American women have. If she wants to change up her look and try different styles, she can. It’s her right to wear her hair how she pleases. Like said before, MANY of my friends wear their hair like this and it’s a very popular style in the natural hair community.

      • Midnight says:

        I agree. This is not one of her better styles. Looks like they forgot to lay it (the hair piece) down on the sides. Her natural hair is so much prettier. Can’t understand why the stylist insists on adding hair pieces.

      • LL2 says:

        @Midnight

        Hair-pieces are sometimes used when someone is growing out their hair and going through that awkward transitioning phase. As for the hairstyle, it looks fine. If you went to a natural hair blog you would see hairstyles similiar to Lupita’s.

    • LL2 says:

      @AlmondJoy

      Thank you for saying something. It looks like the Lupita haters are coming out in full force today for whatever reason. If these people were familiar with styling natural hair, I would take their comments seriously but they are clearly commenting out of their ignorance. If they don’t get something, instead of trying to understand it and educate themselves, they criticize it. It looks like we have a long way to go.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        LL2: I think we’ve been responding to the same people at the same times, lol. Just now reading your comments, and I thank you for them. This issue goes very deep for me so I’ll be brief. I worked at a hair salon for many years and it kind of upsets me when people who have no experience styling and caring for natural African hair speak about how they think it SHOULD look. When a person I’ll keep it at that.

      • Tatjana says:

        I like her hair, but could we not use the word “haters”? We’re not 12.

  26. Lia says:

    I really like both Lupita’s and Kate’s dresses!
    And I’m probably alone in this, but I like Lupita’s hair! I like that her hair stylisy changes up a style (TWA) that is usually considered boring.

  27. JudyK says:

    On Naya, I actually LOVE that outfit…she’s the perfect body type for it, whereas Kim K is NOT.

    With that said, very FEW people could wear this outfit, but Naya is definitely one of them…love the pants, love the shoes…it’s all balanced and stunning ON HER.

  28. LL2 says:

    Lupita looks great. Her dress fits her personality and she’s young looking enough to pull it off.
    Lupita seems to have a lot of haters today but that is okay. To loosely quote Katt Williams: “Get your hustle on. Understand people are gonna hate you regardless. Get that out of your head, that fantasy world where people ain’t hating on you. You gotta be grateful. You need haters. What you complaining about. What do you think a haters job is? To hate. So let them do their d— job. What you complaining about? Ladies if you got 14 women hating on you, you need to figure out how the h— to get to 16 before the summer gets here.”

    • Tatjana says:

      As I said above, could we not use the word haters? That seems like middle school talk.

      • LL2 says:

        @Tatjana

        What word would you prefer I use? I use the word “haters” because this is not constructive criticism, people seem to basically be on a fault finding mission with Lupita. If its not her dress, its her hair, her shoes, her make-up, etc.

      • Tatjana says:

        I think she’s a good actress and incredibly beautiful, but I hate how she dresses most of the time. Am I a hater then?

      • LL2 says:

        @Tatjana

        Did I say your name? If the shoe fits, wear it. If not, ignore my comment. If you have no negativity towards Lupita, then clearly you are not a “hater”.

      • Tatjana says:

        “If its not her dress, its her hair, her shoes, her make-up, etc.”

        You clearly stated that people are haters if they don’t like her fashion.
        Nevermind.

      • LL2 says:

        @Tatjana

        You are taking that statement out of context. The point of my comment was the statement prior to the one you quoted. “I use the word “haters” because this is not constructive criticism, people seem to basically be on a fault finding mission with Lupita.” The statement you quoted was examples of fault-finding and I specifically added etc at the end to allow for fault-finding that had nothing to do with what she was wearing. So to clarify, if you are not on a Lupita fault-finding mission, you are not a “hater”.

    • Jen says:

      God, saying anyone who thinks Lupita doesn’t look perfect is a “hater” is so lazy.

      • LL2 says:

        @Jen

        Not what I said at all. I don’t think Lupita or anyone looks perfect all the time. Why would anyone expect that of anyone? No one is perfect. I’m describing people’s attitudes and motives. They seem to be on a fault-finding mission. Lupita’s has been built up and so they need to cut her down. They are not criticizing her to lift her up. Hence the term “haters”.

    • Violet says:

      Just because someone does not like what Nyongo is wearing or how her hair is styled, it does not make them haters. Not everyone has to praise her.

      • LL2 says:

        @Violet

        That was not what I was talking about. People don’t have to praise anyone but that is different from deliberately trying to find something wrong with someone because you don’t like all the praise and/or accolades they are receiving. That is the definition of a “hater” one who has a problem with seeing someone they don’t care for (who hasn’t done anything wrong to them) succeed.

      • It’s a post about FASHION. People will come here to make critical comments about FASHION. That’s the way it works around here and Lupita is not immune to that.

        It’s not a personal attack on Lupita, people are simply commenting on her dress, which really is more of a criticism of the designer if anything.

        Also, if you’d take the time to read the other comments, many are shitting on the other ladies’ outfits shown here so please stop with the “haterz” nonsense.

      • Violet says:

        @ TheOriginalKitten. Perfectly stated, I so agree with you.

        @LL2 I don’t know what are you talking about as nobody is doing what you said.

      • LL2 says:

        @Violet

        Well, that’s okay if you don’t know what I’m talking about since I wasn’t exactly talking to you. I wrote the comment and I know what I’m talking about.

      • LL2 says:

        @TheOriginalKitten

        You have no idea what I’m talking about so please stop jumping to conclusions. I know the difference between a fashion critique and a personal attack. I also know why I wrote what I wrote and the people I’m referring also know who they are and curiously have not commented on my post because they know I’m right. Only the people who have no idea what I’m referring to are commenting on this post to challenge what I wrote.

  29. shellybean says:

    Love Lupita’s hair. So cute! Her dress is just ok. It looks pretty on her. I don’t like her shoes.

  30. taxi says:

    Bias-cut satin charmeuse, spaghetti strap, no bra looks wrong on 16 yr old.

    • mercy says:

      Too nightgown-ish. Whenever I see a red slip dress, I think of the Frederick’s of Hollywood window display.

  31. raindrop says:

    Kate’s shoes are just horrible. The color is neat but they look painful, and the shoes themselves are really awkward looking.

    I like Lupita’s outfit but I agree that the matching shoes have to stop.

    Elle looks amazing – love the color, love the cut. Don’t have a problem with her not wearing a bra; I hated wearing a bra as a teenager (still sort of do) and was small-chested enough for it not to be uncomfortable. But I’ve never considered bras a prerequisite for looking “classy.”

  32. mercy says:

    Lupita’s look is very fresh and spring-y. Definitely the best of the bunch, though the skirt is a little full for my taste and I don’t like the frisée of fringe. I love her curls, but would have gone with a fuller fringe or just put all the curls up top.

    Not sure who Naya is, but that is an example of a nose that’s been slimmed down too much. It just makes it look longer and too narrow for her face. Dare I say it’s worse than KK’s work. I understand they’re photographed a lot and want to look their best from all angles, but such a shame when they go overboard with the surgery.

  33. Sam H x says:

    Love Lupita’s hair – it’s very Janelle Monae-esque!

  34. janet says:

    Lupita is athletic from the waist up. Her legs are thick and stumpy looking. I don’t find her attractive at all and the hair is tragic. She’s a great actress but over rated in the looks department.
