Tom Hiddleston on his career: ‘It’s very much an ambition of mine to wear jeans’

wenn3251154

YAY, HIDDLES. Finally, Tom Hiddleston gave an interview to support the American release of Only Lovers Left Alive. Is Tommy still in Canada working with Jessica Chastain on Crimson Peak? I don’t know. I think so. This Village Voice interview with Tommy specifically mentions that he’s only called in from Canada, so I think he’s still up there. I wish there was more gossip about Canadian Tommy. I bet he’s banging Canadian women. Please, my queendom for a Tommy tip! Anyway, you can read the full Village Voice piece here, and here are some highlights:

Working with Guillermo del Toro: “He’s like a great Mexican bear,” he laughs. “I hug him every day, repeatedly.”

His inability to be cast as a modern character: “It’s crazy, because I was born in 1981 and I’m alive and well in 2014 — it’s not that I’m conscientiously not doing contemporary stuff. I think it’s really difficult to make a good romantic comedy. I’d love to play them; they just don’t tend to come my way at the moment. I’m taking it as a compliment one way or another, but it’s very much an ambition of mine to wear jeans.”

OLLA: “We were creating this kind of cocktail of Gothic romance. And once all those elements were there, we just shook it up and started shooting.”

On Jim Jarmusch: “He seems to have poured so much of himself into the screenplay,” says Hiddleston of his writer-director, who spent seven years pushing the project. Adam’s obsessions are Jarmusch’s obsessions: music, science, the secret biology of mushrooms. They share the same heroes — Bach, Tesla, Newton, Iggy, Hank (as in Williams) — each framed and hung on their own Wall of Fame. By channeling his personality into a fictional character that will, film format willing, outlive all of us, Jarmusch has created his own version of artistic immortality. Notes Hiddleston, “For Jim, I think that really is all that matters.”

Tommy on Tilda Swinton: She’s “enormous, enormous fun,” and equally game to chit-chat about the cinnamon bagels at the craft services table. Often, though, they talked about the future and what they wished they could live long enough to witness. “The world is changing at an astonishing rate. Will Detroit have a second wind? What cities will last and what will not? And how fast is it all going to come? What language will we all be speaking in 100 years time?” wonders Hiddleston. “There’s an interesting line in the film where Adam asks Eve, ‘Have the water wars started yet, or is it still about the oil?’ I won’t be around to see it, I’m afraid.”

If he was immortal: “If I lived forever, who knows what I would do? I would certainly get better at the piano. I would try to learn how to paint. I think I would try to read all the books I haven’t read. When I was a child, the house was full of books — the walls were lined with bookshelves — and I remember looking up at them once and thinking, ‘I wonder if I’ll ever be able to read all those books?’ and my mother said, ‘It’s all right; you’ve got loads of time.’ But actually we don’t have that much time — I know I won’t. There will be things I’ll miss out on.”

Life after Marvel: “Every six months for the last three or four years, I’ve been playing . This is the first year where I won’t make a Marvel film for three years.”

[From The Village Voice]

I am absolutely SHOCKED that Tommy didn’t find some way to mention Shakespeare. This is some kind of record. He didn’t quote Shakespeare to some passing ducks, nor did he perform a Shakespearean soliloquy over the phone, nor did he drop in something from Coriolanus. WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO TOMMY?

Seriously, though, I wouldn’t mind seeing him as a modern character in some cutesy British rom-com. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in jeans. Hm… jeans and a peacoat. Yes. With some scruff. That needs to happen.

    Cumberbatch!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

    *runs out*

  2. aims says:

I concur. Jeans, a crisp white shirt and a bit of scruff. And yes, I’d hit that so hard we’d both be sore afterwards.

    • j.eyre says:

I, too, concur. I have the perfect place on my floor for the jeans and the recently wrinkled white shirt. As for the scruff, the friction should buff that right off.

  3. Camil says:

I’m a mexican bear too, Hiddles… HUG ME!

Apparently Guillermo del Toro is a teddy bear, I hope somebody draw that.

    • Lindy79 says:

His commentary on the Blade 2 dvd had me in stitches, especially the deleted scenes when he compares one of the characters wigs to Michael Bolton.

  4. Tatjana says:

I would totally do the same if I was immortal. Learn as much of everything as I possibly could, read all the books I could, see the world…
    Anyhow, I really like Hiddles.

    • Eleanor Zissou says:

I like him too. It’s refreshing to see an actor who doesn’t complain all the time.
And he looks good as a blonde.

    • allons-y alonso says:

Oh, Hiddleston! That butt was made for jeans!
re: immortality. That’s what I would so too. Here I am trying to pack that all in within 1 lifetime like a sucker :p

    • Lilacflowers says:

I definitely would learn to play the piano and read.

“Please, my queendom for a Tommy tip!”

    Just the tip, Kaiser? o_0

  6. nora says:

every day I’m on this site almost every day there is an article about him in France is unknown, there is a star at home, he is a good actor?
      c’s this delirium around him?

    • Hiddles forever says:

Yes he is. Actually one of the best around…

Well the delirium is common for many actors and it is not always possible to understand it (I like him but I don’t understand the delirium either!)

    • AV says:

Though he has talent, and has worked with several well-known directors and popular celebrities, he is not famous the way Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt are. Tom is known for working in movies that appeal more to people who are interested in history (“Richard III”) or art (“Midnight in Paris”), so he is better-known in those circles. The general public will only know him because he was “Loki” in the Marvel movies.

The delerium is because many people find him very attractive and sweet-natured, and some are almost fanatical in their appreciation for him.

  7. Isadora says:

He played a regular guy (even though I’m not sure about the jeans) in Unrelated. And Archipelago. And Wallander of course (in jeans). I think there will come a role along where he’s again a regular guy, although I admit that I usually like the unregular roles best. Yes, the creepers, the killers, the strange ones. Or some period pieces. I’m not sure I can actually stomach a cutesy rom com. :-/

Lovely pictures, though! It’s like a best of: leather jacket, velvet, longer hair, beard, satiny seams, silver-grey hm… I really, really hope he comes out of his Canadian black hole for the Olivier Awards on Sunday or I start to have serious withdrawal symptoms.

    • Intro Outro says:

      Are you me? 😉

Give me intellectual, damaged, controversial and conflicted!

Jeans are no hindrance to that, by the way.

      • Isadora says:

Haha, we should apply to become his agents, Intro Outro!

And yes, by all means, he can wear all the jeans out there (I vote for tight and butt hugging though) while he plays intellectual, damaged, controversial and conflicted.

      • Angel May says:

He wore hideous, unflattering corduroy pants in Archipelago. I watched a bootleg online. Joanna Hogg is a brilliant director, I wish her films would come out in The US.

I will be honestly upset if Tom doesn’t win the Olivier on Sunday. I read he is supposed to be there. It would be fun if he brought a date, but he’s too chicken.

      • Janeite says:

Why on earth would he be too “chicken” to bring a date? Speculation that he doesn’t want to alienate his fangirl base by having a girlfriend strikes me as just that, speculation. I would hope that he wouldn’t let fans dictate how he conducts his personal life.

      • Isadora says:

I look very much forward to seeing her films, I’ll get them via amazon, I guess. Starting with Unrelated, Oakley seems much more fun than Edward. 😉

And I wouldn’t bet on Tom’s Olivier tbh, I actually think (based on mere speculation naturally) that Rory Kinnear will bag this one, though I hope otherwise. And I’m already more excited about Sunday than is healthy, haha..

      • jammypants says:

Exhibition actually seems quite interesting. I definitely want to see it.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, Exhibition is the first Joanna Hogg filmed to be picked up for distribution in the United States/ Although the story line seems a bit difficult, I hope to see it.

      • jammypants says:

Lilac, oh good! I hope my city gets it. *crosses fingers* Tbh, I’m shocked OLLA is coming to my city at TWO venues nonetheless!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, we’re getting OLLA in two venues as well, but not for another two weeks.

      • jammypants says:

A whole month wait for me =/

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, you have my deepest sympathy.

    • Hiddles forever says:

I hope he doesn’t fall for the cutesy rom-com clichè, Oh my god no… look what happened to Gerard Butler…

      • Isadora says:

Ugh.. yes, that’s quite tragic. But to be fair, I’m not sure Gerard Butler ever had half the acting chops that Hiddelston has. It also shows in his filmography before he started with the rom coms: a cheesy Attila TV movie, some Dracula flick, Lara Croft & 300 (both higher on physicality than on actual acting, I’d say) etc. So I’m not sure if I wouldn’t have chosen that route too as Mr. Butler.

Hiddles has a much more interesting CV, imho. So I’d say there is no actual need to go into a rom com direction and it’s hard to get out of that special can of worms again (see the struggles of Matthew McConaughey).

      • Hiddles forever says:

        @isadora

You think? Gerard Butler was in Coriolanus on stage too, two decades ago…. He is not a Shakespearean actor, you are right. But he wasn’t that bad…. He had done a lot of good work in his preHollywood days.. Look at Butler now…..
Hiddles seems better than Gerard, but the rom-com route leads to career distruction.. Matthew McConaughey? Hehe

      • Lilacflowers says:

Butler made bad choices once he hit the American market. American romantic comedies tend to be way too formulaic and few of them are actually good; most get by because people like a certain actor or actress more than the actual story. British romantic comedies. at least the ones that get released in the US, seem to be a bit less plastic and actually funny.

      • Um…Using Matthew McConaughey as an example of what rom-coms do to one’s career in terms of a negative influence may have held water two years ago….but hello? Dallas Buyers Club? The Lincoln Laywer? Wolf of Wall Street? Anyone? Anyone? These are much richer characters that you are giving credit for. And not all rom coms are bad. The ones that stink usually do so because they are either miscast or the leads just don’t have the chops.

      • Isadora says:

I think Matthew McConaughey does good movies now despite his rom com past and not because of. It mostly happened in the last few years and I guess he was auditioning his ass off to get past his (shirtless) typecasting.

And no, not all rom coms are bad, but a lot of them. I blame mostly bad screenplays though. Or it’s me. I think the only rom coms I have on DVD are with Doris Day & Rock Hudson – because they are charming and I enjoy the (by now vintage) fashion.

    • Lilacflowers says:

From what I’ve seen from clips of Unrelated, (can’t get the whole film), Oakley wore khaki shorts. Magnus in Wallender wore rather loose fitting jeans that seemed to need a tightly-fitted belt to keep them up.

      • Isadora says:

I was mainly referring to the “regular guy” thing. If it comes to hot & sexy I wouldn’t take anyone of them in the trouser-department (khaki shorts remind my of an ex BF, Edward is a fashion disaster and Magnus … well… a bit too regular, if I may say so). Best trousers so far: Coriolanus. But those weren’t really jeans either, but some kind of jeggings, I think.

For the record: Officially I never noticed anything like that. *cough*

      • Lilacflowers says:

Of course, you don’t. You’re too much of a lady for that, you’re only taking note of the costumes to help you win your Oscar pool. For that very reason, I’ve noticed an evolution in the costumes in the Thor movies since Disney took over Marvel. They seemed to have noticed that they have grown men in these films. As a result, Idris Elba’s Heimdahl has acquired a skirt, Thor now sports a loin cloth thing over his armor, and Loki went from a jacket in the first film to a long tunic and coat in the Avengers to long tunic and coat, usually shot full length only from a distance or behind or holding something in front of himself or from the waist up only.

      • Isadora says:

We are not the only ones – I have to admit that I myself didn’t pay detailed attention to the costumes in the Marvel movies, but I once read this funny and rather essay: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/07/thor-and-loki-on-godly-manifestations-of-power
I’m sure this lady’s conclusion about the Asgardian attire was entirely in the name of science too.

  8. kaisei says:

He will attend the Olivier Awards though, so he’ll be briefly in London this weekend. Shooting for CrimsonPeak should end in 6 weeks (according to Jim Beaver).
No Loki before 3 years means no Thor3 before 3 years. Then I wish there were better news for High Rise or news of future projects.

    • 'p'enny says:

      @Kaiser
I am not trusting that dodgy redcarpet website for confirmation of Tommy’s attendance and the copy on the Olivier website isn’t that clear either. Crimson Peak has two outdoor scenes scheduled for big shoots this weekend/next week. Of course, he may not be included for outdoor shoots being a pale, horror flick type character.

And talk about backward sentences, the sentence about “three years for thor3. I thought it was forward tense, too, but some have been debating he was on about it being the past tense, but just a badly written sentence.

Jeremy Thomas at his special tribute this week at the BFI and has been talking about High Rise still being his next project. Fingers crossed, it’s still going to happen.

      • kaisei says:

        @’p’enny
Yes, but together with his tweet (the one where he said he wanted to bring all the cast along) I think there’s a high chance he will attend. For some reason I can’t imagine him missing it 🙂

To me the sentence is quite clear and it fits with Marvel schedule.

Absolutely crossed, but I’ve just read an interview with Ben Wheatley where he said they are still looking money 🙁

      • Miss Jupitero says:

@kasai: could you say more? I’m reading High Rise now and having some trouble picturing how a film version while capture the book’s subtle tone and not just be a bloodfest. It will need an extraordinary screenplay which is not afraid of making choices. I have heard nothing else about the film other than Ton’s involvement and I am hoping this doesn’t go the way of Capa.

      • kaisei says:

        @Miss Jupitero
You can read here an interview with Ben Wheatley
        http://www.theestablishingshot.com/2014/04/ben-wheatley-alex-zane-edith-bowman.html

        It’s toward the end.

I remember the original plan was for High Rise to start the shooting on June, but if they are still searching for funds, I doubt it. And no other name was attached to this project. Bad sign.

      • Sixer says:

Miss J – Wheatley has form on trippy horror, so that’s what I’m expecting. I think a take in the book rather than a social musing. (I like Wheatley a lot).

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Yeesh. Do you realize how often this has happened to TommyAnnE? King of Soho, Black Wings Has My Angel, Close Enough. Please not again.

      • Isadora says:

Aaah, I finally need to read the book. Plus I have this creepy feeling that the story reminds of some other book/story but I can’t remember it at all. So, if you know a somewhat similar story, please, give me some pointers. 😉

As for Thor 3 – yes, I gather it’s not happening before 2017. I think it will be interesting what happens with the (teenage) fandom in between. I also wonder if Hiddles will have a different standing for contract/payment negotiations with Marvel if he manages to further rise his profile in these 3 years or if his contract of 5 or 6 (?) films is set in stone.

        @Miss Jupitero:
I’m not sure if this is a bad sign or a good one. I mean, of course it’s bad because the films don’t happen. On the other hand it kind of shows that he’s maybe going for the unconventional roles/screenplays and as these are riskier much harder to fund – which would prove (at least for me) that he has a good outline/concept of his career.

      • 'p'enny says:

That article has put the willies up for some, it’s been floating around all week, but regional funding may mean anything, and Ben inferred something about negotiation over his script. Maybe Film4 want it to be a more commercial? it really is an un-filmable to me. It really is very very niche.

      • Intro Outro says:

Re: difficulty to find funds: there’s this new interview with Jarmusch on OLLA and future of independent cinema if anyone’s interested http://www.indiewire.com/article/jim-jarmusch-on-the-future-of-independent-film-cinema-needs-to-be-reduced-to-its-essential-poetry?page=1#articleHeaderPanel

      • Isadora says:

Thank you so much for posting this interview!! I’m overly excited that Jarmusch mentioned Tony Scott’s “The Hunger” – I’ve seen that movie over a decade ago, spend so much time finding out who did the intro music and have been hooked on the band Bauhaus ever since. And I definitely need to check out Dreyer’s Vampyr, sounds very interesting and I really like Le Fanu’s novella on which it’s based.

Regarding independent cinema: I’m not sure I share the radicality of his view (because I think we also need movies like Luhrmann’s Gatsby), but I also think that the sole focus on Hollywood will shift a bit. I hope there will happen more in Europe actually.

And let’s not forget China. Economy is strong there and films like “Hero” or “House of Flying Daggers” have managed to get on the Western Market. Not to mention Wong Kar-Wei of course (who, as a Hong Kong filmmaker, probably doesn’t like me right now for putting him with China). I’m just not sure how much of a market there really is for Asian films.

      • Intro Outro says:

You’re welcome! I only saw The Addiction from his list (I usually dislike vampire films, not a paradigm/allegory that I find particularly interesting), and I thought it was simultaneously excellent in how it used vampirism to explore human nature and the nature of addiction and freedom and lust – and shallow in how it just threw all those philosophical quotes at the viewer without trying to actually make the characters internalise them and make them part of their own discourse. But it’s a film totally worth seeing.

        Bauhaus are awesome!

As for Asian films – Japanese horror films, for example, seem to be quite in demand. However, the stuff a lot of Asian directors shoot “for internal use” is quite peculiar imo. Very niche. If you like Zhang Yimou – try his Raise the Red Lantern, it is an incredible film, one of his earlier and very art-housy ones. Another one that impressed me greatly was Kim Ji-woon’s I Saw the Devil. One of the best takes on the nature of revenge that I have ever seen.

      • Isadora says:

Wow, so much yet to explore… Thank you 🙂 Haha, I’d love to pick your brain in person, you seem quite the cineaste, wonderful!

      • Intro Outro says:

Aww thank you, I basically had to stop exploring cinema actively for several years (family+small son+work->no emotions left to spare 😉 ) but I’ve been catching up!

Oh and I forgot to warn you: I Saw the Devil is VERY cruel and graphic, South-Koreans know how to film gore, so if it is completely not your cup of coffee – better not watch it. I am not a big fan of such things myself, but it worked very well in this film, it was a part of its internal logic rather than just a thing of shock value.

      • Isadora says:

Ah ok, thanks for the warning! Those South-Koreans… “Oldboy” isn’t a walk through the park either lol. But it really depends if can watch it, sometimes I have no problem with gory scenes, but I nearly fainted within the first 10 min. of Stan Brakhage’s “The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes” and left the cinema afterwards. :/ But it was definitely worse because it’s real and without sound which makes it much more oppressing. (For the crazy people here: it’s on YouTube)

So I’ll better handle I Saw the Devil with care. 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Isadora, Lord of the Flies but with adults and in an apartment building instead of on an island.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Intro Outro, Raise the Red Lantern was an incredible film with an amazing performance from Gong Li.

      • Isadora says:

@Lilacflowers: Yes, it’s probably a mashup of Lord of the Flies and Metropolis in my head. Strange feeling…

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Isadora

Oh yeah, Choi Min-sik from Oldboy plays the main villain in I Saw the Devil. He’s unbelievable there, too. And I haven’t seen The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, will check it out!

        @Lilacflowers

Raise the Red Lantern is truly a masterpiece. I hope Zhang Yimou will get tired of wuxia/big budget films and will come back one day with something as amazing as RTRL because he’s an incredible visualist.

    • fairyvexed says:

If he were in a romcom tumblr would melt down.

      • Hiddles forever says:

Hahahaha big meltdown for sure… the sweetness will be too much that we all risk to get diabetes in the aftermath…

    • Lilacflowers says:

I read the Loki for three years to mean the filming of Thor/Avengers during 2010, 2011, and 2012, and actually part of 2013, not “no filming of Loki for the next three years.” Marvel is working on the next Thor script now; they announced the writers back in January. They just haven’t announced a director or release date (and release dates for two years out tend to change frequently.) Thor films tend to be released within a few months of Captain America films and the next one of those is set for May 2016. i suspect he’ll be back in the green leather Loki gear in 2015.

      • kaisei says:

I really don’t know how can you read ““This is the first year where I won’t make a Marvel film for three years.” not in future tense.
Anyway, Marvel has only one other untitled movie for 2016 and it will be for the Black Widow spin-off. So no Loki before 2017 or 2018.

  9. fairyvexed says:

I would never think those three pictures are of the same guy, so why can’t they cast him in a romcom? He’s a chameleon.

  10. 'p'enny says:

Seriously, I read about him hugging G Del Toro everyday repeatedly and I thought, Tommy you need to get a girlfriend, now! I know it was supposed to be a kinky film, but that is a step to far. Hug Charlie instead, he is sweet, gentle and needs a hug. [I bet Tommy is taking the micky out of Charlie’s Geordie accent everyday and singing Byker Grove theme tunes]

As for gossip about banging Canadian girls, that I really would love to read about this. Is it too much to ask for some proper showbiz gossip/dirt? “ambition to wear jeans?” seriously, how much longer can he keep his private life so quiet? just date someone! anyone! male – female – bunny rabbit. Just give us something juicy… it would do his career some real boost to be spotted with a women/man on his arm.

Tom please stop browsing book shops and get out there… I want the old selfies back.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

My own guess is that his personal
Life is much, much quieter and work-focused than tumble likes to fantasize about. If he were truly banging anyone, I would expect some sort of public sighting, but there is mine. I don’t think he is excessively secretive; when he has gone out, somebody typically sees him. I think he is just plunged into work right now.

      • MissMary says:

This. I don’t get why people assume a celeb always has to be coupled up or having secret flings. Non-celebs spend time on their careers, time being single, time to themselves/with their families/focused on projects and not getting laid or dating, so why can’t famous people? I think he’s just really head-down in to work lately and trying to build his brand, as it were, and get his name more widely known outside of Marvel and in the wider movie industry.

      • Isadora says:

Mary, I guess because for “normal” people being single also sometimes means lack of occasion. But (young, handsome) celebs have to fight willing people off with a stick, so it would probably take more dedication not to date/have casual flings than to do so. Plus he seems like a normal, red-blooded man in his 30s. Dedication to work is great, but I guess the man has some needs too. So unless he regularly orders a hooker into his hotel room I assume there is sometimes someone somewhere.

      • jammypants says:

“But (young, handsome) celebs have to fight willing people off with a stick”

The mental image of Hiddles fighting people off with a stick just cracks me up

      • aquarius64 says:

Wasn’t there a story out that Hiddleston had a location fling with Kat Dennings, the actress that plays Darcy in the Thor films?

      • Janeite says:

aquarius64, Yes, I think they may have dated for a time. And lots of peeps on Tumblr still “ship” them.

    • Hiddles forever says:

to be honest I think he likes to bang anything that moves… I don’t see him with a regular girlfriend..

His fans wants him to get together with a lady but what if he’s not the kind of guy to do that? He could turn into a George Clooney….

      • Miss Jupitero says:

But don’t you think he would be *seen* occasionally in female company if this were the case? Or, if he only did hookups, wouldn’t at least *one* spill the beans or the “tea” on the interwebs? If there is fire, where’s the smoke?

      • Isadora says:

I’d have no problem with that. It’s not like my life is any better or worse if he is either pining for marriage and kids or not.

@Miss Jupitero: I don’t know. He’s now in Canada for quite some time and we haven’t seen him AT ALL, so I guess it’s not that strange that we also don’t see female company. And yes, if he would hook up with fangirls, we would hear about it – but I firmly believe that he is far too smart for that. However I rather doubt that for example fellow actresses or maybe some people working in the film or theatre industry would spill the beans. It could cost them their reputation and jobs for exactly nothing in return. For all we know he could have had the hottest casual sex with all his female directors. Or the make-up department. Or the costume department.

I doubt that there never happens anything between actors and crew (I mean, a lot of partners meet at work), yet we hardly ever hear anything about that.

      • jammypants says:

There must be something about this man because he inspires conversation about his sex life a lot lol

      • Janeite says:

Jammypants, did you happen to see one of the recent threads about Benedict Cumberbatch and the detailed descriptions of his genitalia? Speculation about these men and their sex lives and physical attributes is an endless source of fascination for some. Not my thing personally, but to each his/her own.

      • jammypants says:

I may have to go back and have a look. I like Benny a lot, but I’m far from interested in reading about his genitalia. I can see the fascination. There’s a lot of mystery to them.

      • Hiddles forever says:

        Miss jupitero

Maybe he doesn’t choose randoms who like to spill the beans… Or coworkers who can’t keep their mouth shut… He doesn’t strike me as someone who stays home all nights and reads a book. Sometimes, yes. EVERY night…. Noooooooo

      • joe spider says:

@ Hiddles forever “to be honest I think he likes to bang anything that moves… I don’t see him with a regular girlfriend..”

Where did you get that idea from?

      • jammypants says:

He’s probably more normal than we’re letting on haha

    • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, I don’t think having a person on his arm would have any impact on his actual career as far as getting parts. It would probably boost his profile on gossip sites and People magazine or whatever, but an actor doesn’t need that to have a good career.

      • Laura says:

First who would believe the poor girl who did talk about her fling with Tom? There have been a few girls who have been hit on by the man, or even slept with him and they’ve been run off sites calling them liars and such. I think he’s in a prime position right now, he’s well known enough to throw it around and get women’s attention but he’s also well known enough so that if someone came on anywhere to open their mouths, most likely no one would believe them. So we can’t really say just because we haven’t heard anything, because I doubt anyone would believe the woman anyway.

As for him dating an actress, I personally just don’t see it. He hits on women in bars, he hits on fans and tends to like to date people who don’t generally have the same career as he does. I personally think this is great and it’s becoming more common among actors to date outside their industry and considering many of his actor friends have stated they like to date outside the industry it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve had their influence over him as well.

I think his fangirls problem is they want to believe he is this romantic man that wants to settle down and just be sweet and cater to his wife. This man is so far from settling down, he’s playing the field and having a good time. I don’t think we’ll see this man settle down for quite some time. He doesn’t come off as someone who wishes to get serious anytime soon.

      • Janeite says:

        Laura,
In regards to the posters on here who have claimed to been involved with Hiddleston, the CB mods exposed one because she claimed to be in LA yet she was posting from Kentucky. And the other one? I think a review of the threads she posted in will speak for itself. I would personally question the credibility as well as the motivation of anyone who came onto an anonymous gossip site claiming to have had a fling or relationship with any celeb. The very nature of the format lends itself to exploitation.

A rom-com with Tommy in it would be on my “all by myself eating ice cream” movie rotation for sure.

    • j.eyre says:

Well fine; I guess I will have to go to Fanty’s for movie night then.

      • Marty says:

Where is T.Fanty anyways? I have news to share about our bloke!

      • j.eyre says:

That trollop is elusive, isn’t she? I can’t imagine who she is doing now.

Oh, pardon – I meant to say “what” she is doing, of course.

How are you, Marty darling? And who is this “bloke” of whom you speak?

      • Marty says:

I’m good Miss J! Miss you, of course! Are how you?

I’m talking about Tom Hardy! I’ve had to move on a little since CHemboy seems to be sinking futher into dispair.

      • Sixer says:

Tom Hardy is MY bloke. Mine, I tell you! My latest news is Taboo and Peaky Blinders. Marty, my love, is there more?

      • Sixer says:

ONLY??? Sigh. I love my bloke. Merci!

      • j.eyre says:

Ladies please! Can you thumb wrestle for Merrick over there please – I am trying to wrestle MY Tom into bed. It is proving terribly awkward between him quizzing me on the whether I have read the books on my bookshelf and his utter concern for each of your well being with this shameful display.

Oh dear. With all the distractions he’s put on my jeans and can’t get them off. This is going to set back my schedule terribly.

      • Sixer says:

Sorry! At least you’re not having to share!

      • Marty says:

@Miss J- P.S. I’m sorry for the dyslexic “how are you” above. I chalk it up to little sleep and a heavy work load, and has almost nothing to do with how much I’ve been drinking. 🙂

      • j.eyre says:

Yes, Sixer, I am completely without competition for the affections of Mr. Hiddleston. I am sure all the nice ladies and gentlemen posting favorably here would gladly step aside so that I might net my Dragonfly Prince and cart him off with me unmolested; I assume they would pack us some sandwiches for the road as well?

Marty – I don’t know, I kind of like “Are how you.” It makes one think about their answer prior to giving it instead of offering up the knee-jerk “fine.” I think you are just dashed clever, trying to invoke some real discussion and are simply being humble in how brilliant your question was.

As for me, my lack of sleep and lack of workload is a result of my drinking. My lack of Tom is what I am hoping to address.

      • Miss M says:

@Marty!!!! *shank from the back* This b*tch calling Fanty about MY CBneedybaby.
@j.eyre: Hello!!! I think it was a great decision to give up all Hiddles rights to you. You’re really treating him well.
@Sixer: Sorry, but you are little too late to claim Hardy is your bloke. I may not comment here often, but I am keeping my eyes wide open.

      • j.eyre says:

Allo, chere Mademoiselle M! And I thank you every day for those rights – sneaking in after you left for work was exhausting. I will treat him well and never break up with him again… I think.

Dear lord, Merrick is in high demand today. When Fanty gets here, its going to be a bloodbath. Marty, can I get you some lemonade while you are bleeding out?

      • Marty says:

@Miss J- Only if it has Vodka in it! Although that would probably onlyake me bleed faster huh? Then just bring me CHemboy. I want to slip into unconsiousness in his big arms with his scruff tickling my neck.

    • Leah says:

He needs to do a black romantic comedy. Or something like Love Actually would be good.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Leah, I was thinking the same thing. A Richard Curtis directed comedy would be ideal. Or if Bill Forsyth (Local Hero, Gregory’s Girl, Comfort & Joy) would return to film, that would be perfect.

      • jammypants says:

Something along the lines of In Bruges would be perfect.

      • Lilacflowers says:

        @jammypants, YES!!!!

      • Intro Outro says:

YES to In Bruges!! Or something in the style of Filth. A comedy that would be more “black” than “romantic”, and I’ll take two, thanks! I think it’d let him stretch his acting muscles nicely, too.

  13. Tig says:

Not a rom com, but I have a feeling he’ll get a serious overture to star in “Me before You”- director is on record saying they’ll be casting Brits. And while I like him fine, and think he’s hilarious, I don’t think he’s a good fit for that character.

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Tig, Thea Sharrock is directing that. She directed The Hollow Crown, Henry V. On the “making of” video on the DVD, they explain that Tom was already signed to do Hal in Henry IV and the producers got the idea of having him do Henry V too. He says that his only real demand was that he get to film a lot of it outdoors. Sharrock said that she insisted that she had to meet with him first before they finalized casting because she had to see how well he would respond to her; she didn’t want to work with an actor who wouldn’t listen to her directions. (I got the sense that she had had difficulties with men taking direction from her in the past.) She agreed to cast him so obviously, she must have thought he would do as she directed. It wouldn’t be a surprise if she chose to go that route again.

      • Froop says:

I didn’t know she was directing. I don’t think he’s a great fit for Will but I’m pleased she’s doing it since quite often popular books set in the UK are Hollywoodized and it usually doesn’t work. He’s said he wants to do a romcom and this could be a good one.

She also directed Cumberbatch in After The Dance and Daniel Radcliffe in Equus so I wonder if either of them would be on her list. Probably unlikely.

      • Tig says:

@ lilac flowers and froop- just confirms my fears that he’ll be Will-boo. I hadn’t considered Daniel Radcliffe- just saw him in Kill Your Darlings- pretty impressed. Tho think he’s about where Kate Winslette was when she made the comment that it’s time to cover up in her movies!!

      • Isadora says:

Ugh… please not Tom. She can have Daniel Radcliffe for this.

    • 'p'enny says:

I havn’t read the book so I can’t really comment if he would be a perfect fit. but then again, when has anyone cast an actor like we imagine our literary heroes.

however, if they need a professional upper-class banker who needs to go through an emotional rollercoaster. I think Tom can pull that off. 😀 He can get in tears and angry emotions to laughter in less than a thirty seconds.

however, there is a glut of brit actors who could all pull it off, I think, like Eddy Redymane and Cillian Murphy depends if they need an Oscar level actor for the role or popular actor, i.e Gerard Butler for the role. Just hope they give it to an actor fair and square and not out some kind of loyalty to whose the most popular, but can’t act like emma Watson or throwing or good actress whose dull like Rebecca hall in there.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, the parts Rebecca Hall has played on film have been dull, haven’t they? It is as if directors don’t really know how to use her or she chooses only “serious” characters to play. I saw her on stage in “As You Like It” and she was anything but dull. Whatever she has doesn’t translate to the screen.

      • icerose says:

I thought Rebecca Hall was the best thing in Parades End

  14. Karen says:

    Haha.

Their film has excellent ratings on rottentomatoes thus far.

  15. Sixer says:

I have no snark at all for theHorny Helmet today. I’ll just have a little competition with him instead. My mother worked for Penguin Books all her life and was allowed to bring home as many pulp copies (minor damage) as she could carry. My father used to joke that our house was 90% book. I bet we had more books than Tommy. More peasanty bookshelves, though.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Few things warm my heart more than a house teetering with piles of books. I like this image. I have the same thoughts about my shelves. How will I find time for it all?

    • Hiddles forever says:

      @Sixer

I used to have the house full of books too…. and my dream was to have one of those big rooms at home that you can call library.. I don’t know why because I don’t even have time to read the ones I have….
Well also peasanty books of course, not posh ones like Tom’s…….

    • Sixer says:

I still own many of the books my mother brought home for me. I’d be bereft without them!

    • Isadora says:

Haha, I have so many books in my home that they are literally splattered all over the place. I have books in my shoe cabinet, my kitchen drawer, on my laundry rack, as tea coaster, underneath a wobbly table etc. I’m a book hoarder and I try to NEVER think about the actual time it would take to read them all because this will plunge me into despair.

    • Hiddles forever says:

      @Sixer

I am missing my old childhood books.. I moved here a long time ago and still have to get them here.. Maybe next time I go to visit my mum I will collect them and send them here to myself….

    • Lilacflowers says:

I currently have an attic full of bins of books in a variety of languages. Tom can rummage to his heart’s content and he’s welcome to take the entire bin full of the plays of Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderon de la Barca. I doubt I’ll be reading any of those again any time soon.

    • fairyvexed says:

He did an Xmas greeting to his fans one year and you can see lots of bookshelves. His laugh was also a lot different than it normally seems——more throaty.

  16. Miss Jupitero says:

No Shakespeare quotes, but the article said he mentioned the poet John Clare (in casual conversation! Omigerd!) which shows taste that I admire. Sometimes his tastes in poetry strike me as kind of undergrad-frozen-in-time.

I like this interview. Some of the questions seem recycled, but after the recent deluge of Goop and ScarJo, he is refreshing.

  17. A:) old prude says:

I always come to Tom Hiddleton or Cumberbatch posts here thinking you will have the same magic as you did with Fassy but still not getting the same feel.

Man I miss your Fassy posts, please please please get back together with him. You 2 belong together.

  18. Hiddles forever says:

It would be very much an ambition of mine to take yours off, dear Puddletom…

Can I have a second life please? *sighs*

  19. Ginger says:

The comments on this post alone are a perfect example of why I love this site so much!

  20. deezee says:

Only tip I have is that Zachary Levi has visited him a few times based on his twitter feed. Who knew Loki and Fandral (sp?) were still so close.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Datalounge is circulating theories about this apparently.

      • kaisei says:

Somebody on that site was once again stupid enough to waste money to open a thread to talk about Hiddleston? lol

      • 'p'enny says:

        youre kidding?

Levi wants money Nerd HQ- tom is well connected 😀 end of story,

Ok, i can’t find it on datalounge, i was curious for a laugh. I think they are good friends.

      • deezee says:

Um hope you didn’t think I was insinuating anything other then they’re friends. LOL

Cause I do think they’re just friends and Levi lives in NYC right now and Toronto is a short flight away.

      • Roberta says:

I think I saw that thread, the subject was Levi and Matt Smith if you want to look for it. Looks like the wishful thinking of one poster who takes a dim view of closet cases (+ hasn’t seen the video of Tom checking out an interviewer).

      • pixie-stix says:

After seeing Tom and Zach dance-off @ Thor2’s LA premiere, I’m hoping they work on a song and dance routine. Those two funsters could easily be reincarnated Vaudevillians.

The DL threads on Tom seem to disappear very suddenly. Ok, some of the threads get out of hand but some don’t and they still get the chop. Curious.

      • Janeite says:

Pixie-stix, that kind of thing happens all the time on DL with all kinds of threads, not just the Tom Hiddleston ones.

    • Isadora says:

Yes, men are entitled to have friends too without someone shouting “gay” immediately. I wouldn’t have a problem with him being gay, but I really, really doubt it. He checks boobs and asses out quite too much for that. Plus I remember the joke Mark Gatiss pulled on someone on twitter who asked if he and Hiddleston will come out after Coriolanus (he meant doing stage door) and Gatiss answered: “I’m already out and Tom isn’t gay.” 😉

    • Janeite says:

That’s the most assinine and utterly ridiculous speculation that there has ever been about Tom Hiddleston. And that’s saying something.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Hey, I’m not saying I *share* the theory! It’s Datalounge! You know how they are over there! 🙂

      • Make mine a double says:

Seriously, on datalounge some of those posters believe that every single guy is gay or in the closet / denial over it. You could have a guy whose been happily married for 100 millions years and with a whole football team full of kids and they would still be saying gay.
They usually dig up the rumours about Tom and Ken Branagh too, and then call anyone else who posts in any Hiddleston thread there “an over-invested frau”. Good old datalounge…

      • Janeite says:

Yeah, I haven’t seen the thread on DL so I don’t know how anyone arrived at that conclusion but I find it completely absurd that anyone could even speculate about that, based on some tweets and the fact they they apparently keep in touch.

Based on the fact that most of the long-term DL members don’t like threads about Hiddleston, I’m not sure who over there even cares.

      • Ellen says:

What happened to that music promo lady which everyone thought was a bit of a fangirl on here? Did he dump her in the end?

      • Janeite says:

Ellen, that whole debacle was based on way too much ridiculous speculation too. No one knows anything definitive about any type of relationship between them, other than all the theories. As far as I am aware there is no more new fuel to add to that fire.

      • Isadora says:

Nobody really knows what ever happened or didn’t happen between those two. My guess: they had a little thing, he “dumped” her, end of story.

      • Roberta says:

Mmad/Janeite – I agree there’s a type of poster on DL who’s either insecure and obsessed about straight men or views any evidence that a male celeb doesn’t have a gf is evidence they’re gay. There was a whole load of speculation on there recently about RDJ and Daniel Craig banging each other (not kidding), and they’re both married. While I’m open to the speculation that DC may be bi, that was a bit far-fetched.

As Isadora’s post above, there’s numerous reports of Puddletom checking out and flirting with women so we all know it’s bs. So he has male friends, so do a lot of men straight, bi and gay. As for the lack of a gf he’s either getting some and being very discreet, or paranoid about his image and not getting any (which I think is quite sad).

@Ellen, she’s still favouriting tweets about him, which looks a bit sad. My theory: there is/has been some sort of professional arrangement between them, but my guess is as good as anyone’s.

      • Ellen says:

I was just curious because I was reading old threads on his tag. I don’t care what she is to him but she did sound a bit odd according to what was said she does. Nevermind. The Levi theory sounds more fun

      • jammypants says:

How do you ladies find these things? That’s the most poorly designed site on the gossip internet. People PAY for that? The quality of gossip sounds terrible. At least here, you get some very smart comments.

      • Janeite says:

        Ellen,
If by “fun” you mean ridiculous and totally unsubstantiated, then yes, I agree.

      • Roberta says:

Jp, actually DL has some posters who work in the entertainment business, and I’ve read insightful stuff in in particular on there as well as gossip. But it’s also mainly US posters who appear to be ignorant of basic cultural differences and the site design is really old.

      • Ellen says:

I mean fun at how ridiculous the theory is/was. I prefer it when it’s light hearted

    • kjeong83 says:

Speaking of Zach Levi, is there anything going on with his sister (Shekinah) and Tom? From the pictures she posted on her twitter feed, it seemed like she spent her Xmas holidays in England. Specifically, there are a few in Oxfordshire on Xmas day itself. I have no idea if Tom’s family still lives there but thought it interesting given he did grow up there (right?). The Zach Levi tidbit reminded me of it. Any guesses would be thoroughly entertained!

  21. Miss M says:

Off topic: happy birthday, Hunnam! muahhhhhhhh

  22. Ellen says:

Ok I’m going to lump all my comments here together.

I also agree he’s too busy for a long term relationship at the moment but I do know that he likes to keep his Virgin like image to please fans despite what regulars here offer him! Lol

Oliviers event. If he does go I hope he takes some sort of bodyguard. Some of the obsessive fans who don’t think they are obsessive have got tickets to the event. I might of said this before but when he tweeted that tweet about everyone coming, he probably didn’t know about the new location which starts filming on the 10th.

And finally, one fan on tumblr is questioning his motive behind the rom com quote. Apparently during a Q&A on twitter she asked him if he’s rather do a western or a rom-com and he chose western. My guess is that this quote was directed to directors. Thomas, if you want to be in one audition for one. Not make it obvious you’re not getting the roles you want.

That is all. Off to do the benny-Tommy quiz on the radio times website

    • 'p'enny says:

      @Ellen

I think he directs a lot of quotes at directors, rather than fans. But, he say’s the scripts are not coming his way. Not much he can do, he networks his butt off and if the agent can’t get him first interview, then going over agents heads and putting feelers out in the press is no bad thing.

It’s like Benny C coming out saying he wants fun roles, and he is fed up of acting in intelligent biopics. Not, that made a difference finding himself in Richard 111.

I got 10/10 on the Radio times quiz 😀 [i’m too invested in these actors for my own good]

      • Isadora says:

Thank god you’re that invested! So much interesting information comes from you, ‘p’enny! 🙂

And what’s up with those directors and agents. I’m tempted to shout “get out of the way” and take that agency over. It’s time someone’s got some work done, haha…

    • Janeite says:

I”m sure there will be plenty of security at the Oliviers. And I’d also guess that Hiddleston is more than capable of protecting his physical self from those “obsessive” fans, should the need arise. He’s a grown man, not a delicate flower.

      • Isadora says:

I agree. Plus he’s not the first actor with .. let’s say passionate fans.

But I’m still creeped out by the fact that he eats chocolate he gets as present from fans. Not smart, Hiddles, not smart at all.

      • Ellen says:

I hope you’re right. These passionate fans were criterzing the other passionate fans then discussing how they’re going to meet him on red carpet. The scary thing is they don’t realise they’re just as bad. They utter the words “you’re just jealous” when I want to tell them i wouldn’t go to an event which I’m not really interested in just to stalk an actor I like.

      • Isadora says:

Hm… I guess there are worse things than going to a red carpet because you like a certain actor. In fact the Olivier awards kind of count on this publicity and are probably more inclined to nominate people like Hiddleston or Jude Law. An actor with an audience (and that includes the fans that are willing to spend a lot of money on him) has always more doors open than one without.

      • Janeite says:

There are always fans at red carpet events. This is nothing new. Autographs get signed and pics get taken. While it may not be something I want to do myself, I don’t see the harm in anyone else doing it. It’s really no different that conventions in a lot of ways. I think that fans going to a red carpet event are a lot less intense than those who know exactly where he lives and take videos of the surrounding neighborhood and videos/pics of him when he’s just out trying to live his life like everyone else.

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Ellen, virgin-image? I can’t imagine anything that man has said or done that would indicate he has any desire to have anyone consider him virginal.

      • jammypants says:

Haha, too right! Not with his nod to “bad boy pants” in his very own “bad boy drawer”, or having a “magic stick” and wearing something quite “horny” while being a “good boy in certain situations and a bad boy in others” LOL

      • Lilacflowers says:

Right! Lots of stuff like that.

      • pixie-stix says:

@jammypants – Nice gif choice (btw, that gif of him touching his neck is rather good).

I think it was in Cologne, Tom responded to instructions to operate a camera (‘push harder’) – ‘That’s what they all say.’ Zesty!

      • Intro Outro says:

Re: virgin image: I just can’t help snorting quietly every time I read about Hiddleston’s supposedly virgin and tightly managed image. Can’t help comparing it to how Japanese labels control their musicians (and to the overall situation in Japanese show business). Taboo on any information related to personal life, taboo on public sightings with boyfriends/girlfriends, taboo on marrying/getting pregnant when still on contract with the label, taboo on expressing any strong opinions, personas that are so rigidly crafted and often so OTT you really want to puke – and step right, step left out of that persona and your label will come down on you hard =/

  23. Isadora says:

Ah, I have a question regarding the Olivier Awards on Sunday: Does anyone know when the winners are selected/voted? I mean, is it already done or not?

(I hope anybody knows what I mean… my foreign language skills have deserted me today)

  24. aquarius64 says:

@AV – I agree with your post. Hiddleston can do art films, Shakespeare and appeal to many women (especially the ones on this thread). But Hollywood apparently believes he can’t appeal to that all-important demographic it wants to bring in the bucks: males 18-49. That’s the sweet spot money-wise. Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill may not have Hiddleston’s refined manners and wit, but they will be hired by studios before Hiddleston because those guys can sell a regular guy (by American standards, which is what studios measure) in big money movies. Sure he can put male butts in movie theater seats as Loki, but can he do that outside of Marvel? So far Hiddleston has not passed the I-want-to-have-a-beer-with-him test with men in my opinion. It may not be intentional, but he comes off as a somewhat snooty metrosexual that can be off-putting to men. Hollywood and the theater elite may appreciate the dollars ladies drop to support his projects, but if he can’t get the gents in beyond Loki, he’s marginalized.

I don’t know. Women account for more than half for cinema attendance. Let’s not give all the credit to men. Women have money to spend as well.

Also, that is a serious generalization on the male population. Of those who are aware of him, I’ve seen in different movie sites how the male users are willing to watch his non-Marvel films. They are interested in his career, but they are less obsessive. Now I’m not trying to account all the men aware, but to say that they see him as a snooty metrosexual? How would you even know? That sounds more like your perception. Just being honest here.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

It’s sad, but I think what you are saying is accurate. Welcome to the movie biz. Of course everything you are describing is precisely what I like best. But I am not a part of any profitable demographic.

Generally speaking, men who pass that “I want to have a beer with him test” immediately are less appealing to me. Men who share cinnamon bagels with Tilda Swinton on the other hand can get away with a lot of silliness and still be on my radar.

    • Isadora says:

I don’t see Hiddleston in the same casting pool as Vince Vaughn or Jonah Hill, tbh. Yes, they get the men 18-49 into the cinemas. But do they also get the women, critics, theatre goers, art house film fans etc.? No. I think Hiddles tries to find a balance between a proper paycheck and a critically acclaimed career (otherwise his return to theatre would have been rather unneccessary). Not an easy feat, but given his talent not totally out of reach.

      • aquarius64 says:

@jammypants too – Hollywood only cares about who can run up the box office receipts with the primary demographic and that’s men 18-49. Snooty metrosexual are my words, but let’s not be naive and think some male movie-goers may not find the Shakespearean quotes and dancing and singing charming. That could be the reason why those guys are not spending $10 to see him in a non-Marvel movie. Those same guys may outnumber the men you say find Hiddleston appealing. Studios take all that into account, right or wrong. Show business is that…a business.

      • jammypants says:

If that’s the case, I’m quite curious what the female market is like. Penny made a good case about Need for Speed. I don’t think all dudebro type of actors appeal to the mass market either. That is niche itself. I look at Jason Statham’s career and it’s very limiting. In fact, returns have dropped with each film that he makes (maybe except Expendables). Even more well known actors like Christian Bale is seen in smaller types of films of late.

In any case I see what you’re saying. Who knows, maybe if he gets a chance to offer up a variety, he won’t be seen as just the Shakespearean yes man.

    • 'p'enny says:

@aquarius64 ” Hollywood apparently believes he can’t appeal to that all-important demographic it wants to bring in the bucks: males 18-49″

Hiddles isn’t an actor for thick-male-bloke-actor market, thank god! seriously, don’t want to see him in sh@T like Need for Speed type movie. etc Even Aaron Paul is wasted in stuff like that.

Hiddles will appeal to men who value a conversation and a good laugh, and have an intelligence higher than an IQ 10. He is closer to John Cusack than Tom Cruise. Metrosexual, yes, snooty no, actors who come across as snooty are James franco and leonardo. Hiddles may have his shakespeare fancy moments, but he is very funny.

Generally, at the moment though he is actor that works well appealing to intelligent women, especially older women. it really is untapped yet market for him, he could turn us all into Tilda’s and Rachel’s and Jessica’s. He really nows how to flirt on film and on stage. Eye contact unlike none other!!

      • Isadora says:

        Thank you, yes!

I also think that – if all goes well – he will actually profit from getting older regarding his male audience. It worked for Leonardo DiCaprio (because seriously, after Titanic his male fans were hardly the majority), it worked for Jude Law (he is now allowed to play Karenin and Henry V.) etc.

As to older women: Yes, but tumblr is actually full of teenage girls that love Hiddleston too – of course because he is Loki, is nice to fans and dances. But I think quite a few of them are also mightily impressed with his acting, Shakespeare quoting and general intelligence. I actually like that they therefore come in contact with stuff that they otherwise wouldn’t – like Henry IV, V, Coriolanus. Or Jarmusch. They probably even read High Rise now. And I like to think that they now “grow up” to form also an interesting future audience.

    • Lilacflowers says:

My guy thinks Vince Vaughn hasn’t made a decent movie since Swingers. He also hasn’t seen a Marvel movie since the Incredible Hulk, and he only went to see that because Liv Tyler was in it. He has no idea who Loki is, but he did see Midnight in Paris (for Marion Cotillard), War Horse (It’s history!), The Deep Blue Sea (for Rachel) in the cinema and he was glued to The Hollow Crown (SHAKESPEARE!) . He had the advance tickets for the local showing of Coriolanus before I even thought of it because again, Shakespeare. He sees plenty of movies in the theater and he’s always using Netflix but stuff like Need for Speed or Fast and Furious aren’t on his “must see” list. And women make up a large portion of the movie market. Focusing on a limited demographic of males of a certain age who like to see things blow up might be why movie ticket sales have been steadily declining.

      • Isadora says:

Wow, your guy’s a keeper! Great taste in movies and women! 🙂

      • jammypants says:

precisely so! Now, in the best of both worlds, you get a good script, character development, and enjoyment in the likes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

Why, thank you. His taste in music isn’t bad either and he’s not difficult to look at. And he finally got over his worship of Gwyneth.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@jammypants, Captain America: The Winter Soldier converted my mother away from SuperMan.

    • Katie says:

I agree with a lot of the industry comments above, good stuff!

I’ve thought maybe part of Hiddleston’s problem is that he can pass on roles left and right because he came into this already financially secure and set even if acting didn’t pan out. Being able to be choosy about parts is both a blessing and a curse; you may pass on that risky one that would have elevated you above the crowd.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I don’t think he is all that choosy about parts. He’s auditioning hard for parts that he wants and they are not being offered.

      • aquarius64 says:

        Expendables 3
        Transformers 4
        Fast and Furious 7

These are not highbrow franchises but these macho-fests are made because they make money, especially outside of the US. Until Hiddleston learns how to give off a swagger to expand his skill set as an actor he’s going to be limited to the art films. The psychotic snarkiness that is Loki doesn’t count, but I think that role has officially typecast him.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@aquarius64, there is nothing wrong with being “limited to art films.” Many actors do nothing but art films and many of those in the blockbuster films long for the chance to do them – the awards are in the art films, not the blockbusters. Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey, and Jared Leto all just won Oscars for their parts in art films. Nobody is going to get an Oscar for the Expendables 14 or Transformers 8. There are also actors who do just fine doing nothing but theater work or mostly just theater work with an occasional film – Mark Rylance comes to mind. Some actors do nothing but Shakespeare and support themselves just fine. Others do nothing but voice work and make a good living at it.

      • Froop says:

I agree with Miss Jupitero. Plus he’s had a lot of bad luck with projects falling apart. Most of his big non-Loki post-Marvel parts have been replacing other actors. I do think he’s picky too, he’s only chasing leading man parts these days which is limiting for him if he’s not willing to take smaller roles.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Miss Jupitero

Which parts had he been auditioning for that were not offered to him in the end? I am genuinely curious.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Intro Outro, he auditioned for re-make of The Crow, but the part went to Luke Evans.

      • Intro Outro says:

Oh! Thanks for info! Hmmm.. I love the original film with Brandon, such a relentlessly dark comic book rendition. The rest of the films were godawful, even Perez who I used to like in those French period dramas did not save that first sequel for me =D But it could probably be a great material if somebody wrote good scripts. However, it’d make another comic book-based series for Hiddles. So maybe it’s for the best that he didn’t get the part?

      • Isadora says:

I’m actually glad he didn’t get The Crow. For me this movie is entirely entwined with Brandon Lee, esp. with the incredibly tragic backstory. I’m not sure if a remake is something I really want. Therefore: if we stay in this kind of gothic horror genre I have much higher hopes for Crimson Peak to turn out fine.

This is totally random now, but I really want Hiddles to play a contemporary role in a Michael Haneke film. He seems to be a bit of his fanboy and I’ve dreamed of that combination ever since. It’s rather unlikely as Haneke works mainly with a German or French cast, but oh my… *swoon*

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Isadora:

Personally, I do agree about The Crow. I also think Brandon’s death cast the same shadow of, well, added greatness on The Crow as Ledger’s did on TDK’s Joker.. Something that’s very hard to compete with and probably should better be left unchallenged. However, it’ll be the Crow for the new generation who might never have seen the original film so they’ won’t care about Brandon’s death in the same way as we do.

Never saw Haneke’s films. Which ones would you recommend as introduction to his work?

      • Abby_J says:

I’m super thankful that he didn’t get The Crow, although I didn’t know he was up for it until I just read this.

Why in the world would they even want to make this movie again, when I can’t imagine that it will EVER have the life that the first one had. I’m not suggesting that the first was some brilliant piece of cinema (and I suspect that if it didn’t have its tragic death, it might not have been remotely as popular as it was), but when you consider the death of Brandon Lee, the AMAZING soundtrack (which I still admit to listening to now) and the nuttiness of the early 1990’s, a new movie can never live up to it.

      • Isadora says:

I agree with the younger generation but on the other hand I don’t understand what’s wrong with watching old movies, esp. ones that made it into cinema history (for whatever reasons). I mean, I was 7 years old when The Crow came out and I still have seen it in my teenage years when I mightily crushed on Brandon. My generation generally seemed to crush on dead people, my best friends had the hots for Kurt Cobain.

Regarding Haneke: The first of his movies I’ve ever seen was “Funny Games” (the 1997 version) which was impressive and cruel. It’s in a nutshell a movie about violence in films and media in general, put in a rather simple story, but Haneke doesn’t pull his punches.
Another one of his famous ones is “The Piano Teacher”, which is an adaption of a book by nobel prize winner Elfriede Jelinek. Again no punches pulled and I find this gazing into highly dysfunctional relationships rather exhausting tbh, but I guess that’s the point. My brother loves that one.
My mother on the other hand loved “The White Ribbon” – beautiful cinematography (it’s black and white), the story is set in a rather suffocating and religiously opressive German Village before WWI. I think it could be hit or miss with that one.
And the one Hiddles raved about was obviously “Amour” – I haven’t seen it and won’t do so. It’s a film about an old couple in the last stages of their relationship, dealing with sickness and death. That’s even for Haneke quite depressing and I think I’m not up to it. However Emmanuelle Riva was obviously amazing in it, hence the Oscar nomination.

So… all I’ve written now was quite senseless because I leave it up to you. 😉 Qualitywise every Haneke film delivers. Storywise everyone is rather depressing (as you can see). And in a way thought-provoking. I guess that’s why I want Hiddles in one of those – they are complex, very challenging for the actors (great cast too) and they will probably be highly unpopular with the Loki fangirls. Plus another Oscar winning director can’t hurt on the CV.

So the next time I see Haneke on the street I will jump him and cry “Please, cast Hiddles!!” and he will probably have me confined to a mental home. I hope they have internet there.

      • Isadora says:

(And I promise to refrain in the future from writing such long a** comments and say instead short and simple – see which trailer appeals most to you ;-). I have this awful habit of endless nighttime ramblings. Not good…)

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Isadora:

Aww, it’s fine, dear! ^_^ I like long and interesting night rambling! And thank you for the info, I’ll indeed see what I’ll start with.

As for Loki fangirls not liking TH in a Haneke film – I bet The Deep Blue Sea was already off-putting lol (that is, if the younger ones even cared to watch it 😉 ) I just watched it and while I did not particularly enjoy it (to me it is basically an English version of Anna Karenina without children and with a much more humane Karenin), I thought to myself: wow, bingo Hiddles, you managed to create a round character that repulsed me on an existential sort of level (as well as Hester herself, I have never been able to truly associate with throes of such emotionally repressed women). So yeah, I am all for this slate of characters for TH – that are *indeed* conflicted and unpleasant and not in the way Loki is – very endearingly so 😉

  25. Ellen says:

Here’s that Benny-Tommy quiz that we were talking about earlier http://t.co/uz8R5KJGHl I got 10

  26. bettyrose says:

He’s almost Loki hot in that top picture.

    • Leah says:

That is one of my favorite pictures of him. Long, lean and lanky wins my cherry. Well, my cherry is long gone, but you get my drift…

    • jammypants says:

haha the black leather and Loki scarf with dark curls might have a lot to do with it

      • bettyrose says:

But, Jammypants, I’m convinced Loki is who he is in his soul. Brilliant, witty, devious, dark . . .whatever. If one scarf makes all that happen, I’ll take it. 🙂

      • jammypants says:

Loki in human form of a certain Tom Hiddleston? Loki seems quite fond of that scarf.

  27. Dara says:

OK – As a purely intellectual exercise, I’m trying to calculate the over/under of seeing Tom at the Oliviers on Sunday… my boss flies from the US to London on a semi-regular basis, so I have some of the logistics rattling around in my brain. I can’t narrow it down to 50/50 either way.

Assuming the schedule in Toronto allows for a late Friday/Saturday/early Sunday departure, he could catch a flight that would get him there in time for the awards on Sunday. You lose almost an entire day because of the time difference going west to east, but if you’re in Business or First it’s possible to sleep the entire way there and arrive (mostly) refreshed.

The issue might be the shooting schedule for Monday – there are no flights leaving London headed to North America much after 8pm, which means an overnight in London after the awards and catching a flight back to Toronto on Monday. You gain some time going east to west, but he most likely couldn’t get back to Toronto much sooner Monday afternoon.

    The questions are:
    1. Are they filming Monday and is he on the call sheet that day?
    2. Does he want to pay big $$ (I’m guessing 7-10K USD, or more) for a Business/First class seat out of pocket (unless his contract specifies he gets a certain number of trips home paid for during shooting).
    3. Does he have a fighting chance at winning the award? IMHO he seriously deserves the win for Coriolanus, but there is some major competition and it may be a longshot. If you’re not a slam dunk to win, I personally don’t think it’s worth the time/energy/expense to go there and back again just to sit in the audience and hear someone else’s name called. Do the Olivier people give the winners a quiet heads-up that they may actually want to make the effort to attend?

And before I’m accused of stalking the man… a) that would NEVER happen and b) I have to figure out this time zone/flight time math A LOT for my actual job, so there was no extra research/checking of flight schedules needed.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I do not have the slightest ideas some of your questions, but my guess is that the awards people would keep the winners top secret– otherwise plenty of people might not bother to show up, and the risk that the news would be leaked would ruina lot if things.

I once had to make the trip you describe for a funeral, and it SUCKED. I was good for absolutely nothing for the entire following week. I cannot imagine how this would be worth the time or money, no matter hiw exciting the award. If he shows up, I will have to conclude that he either will do anything for attention, or filming is done for his character.

      • Dara says:

You’re right, it does SUCK and I wouldn’t want to do it (I’m sorry your trip was not under better circumstances). The more I ponder it, the less likely I think it is he’ll be there… unless the schedule in Toronto really works in his favor.

I don’t believe for a second he’d make the same effort to be at the MTV Movie Awards instead…unless I’ve completely mis-interpreted his career priorities.

Good Lord, could you imagine the scorn of the theatre (theater?) crowd if Tom actually picks MTV over them? He’d have to turn his “I’m a Serious Actor” membership card.

      • Janeite says:

I second that, Miss Jupitero. Two transcontinental flights in that short a span of time combined with the resulting jet lag is absolutely horrendous. Of course, he is more used to flying around the world than most of us are, so maybe he can handle it better which is why I wouldn’t automatically assume that if he does attend, it would only be because he’ll do anything for attention. But if I had to guess, I would say that he won’t be in attendance.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well, if Jessica Chastain’s Facebook postings are any indication, she’s had most Saturdays and Sundays off from filming, so a Friday night flight out and a return on Monday could be possible. It all depends on what his contract allows, many film contracts do spell out contingency plans for such things.

      • icerose says:

I use to travel back from Canada and head into work the next day and the rest of the week that was without the first class beds. My brother flies all over for business meetings and your body just gets use to it. Tom’s pretty fit so I doubt the travel will bother him.
I think it will be more about where the filming process is. As to whether he will win. Rory has been winning all year but Tom and Jude were not up for awards then. So who knows. The voting is carried out but he committee and members of SOLT which is producers and managers so it will be interesting to se the outcome. The Red Carpet is very short but they do the theatre numbers out side and its free so getting audiences is not that difficult. Tom gave out either best actor or best play last year.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Jessica Chastain has posted on Facebook that she just started a 10 day vacation from filming. Maybe Tom has the same break and will be able to travel to London for the awards.

    • 'p'enny says:

Lol i love it when it others, not just me, obsess about this kind of stuff.

i keep thinking that the Oliviers have an organisation/boring production problem. At the moment they have Benny and Bjorn, threatening ABBA numbers and God knows what musical camp numbers to entertain Britain, via ITV.

Two of its Best Actor nominees , and the only ones that have any international appeal and are not going to send the audience asleep are Jude and Tom. And they are both on film sets, sort of, Jude is getting drunk and sha@£ing glamour models in Budapest and Tom is having hugging sessions with Del Toro in Canada and snoozing in book shops and galleries. [what a contrast!]

The Oliviers have got to pull them in to the show one way or another, or it is going to be dull for non-theatre goers, like me. [seriously dull] [ i will be on twitter, getting the low-down]

so….. they need to be sending camera crews to film either Tom or Jude, to film their acceptance speeches, if they win. v expensive, not going to happen. And it would make very dull viewing, if they just had someone boring picking up the award on either behalf, and read a hand written thank you note. Tom surely wouldn’t want that, miss an opportunity to entertain and get his glory – if he wins? noooo.

Therefore, It would be cheaper for Olivier Producers, courtesy of sponsors to pay the £7000 first class flight from Toronto or £2000 from Budapest, to bring Tom/Jude [sighs] to the Oliviers awards. Lest face it they are the only two interesting actors there. That is including the women.

[P.s i am sure people will tune into the Oliviers to congratulate the serious acting talents of theatre stage and the entertainment and the letching value of the attendees are not a serious consideration. :-p]

      • Janeite says:

Tom Hiddleston and Jude Law are the only two interesting actors nominated for Oliviers? Including the women? Wow, I really have to disagree with that statement.

        Surely you jest.

      • Froop says:

Tom and Jude Law are the only interesting actors there and everyone else will send the audience to sleep? Oh dear.

      • Froop says:

Haha snap Janeite! I only saw your reply after I posted mine.

      • 'p'enny says:

        @janeitte and Froop

but i represent the non-theatre appreciation audience group – :-p

Seriously, Rory K, Hayley A, and Lesley Manville etc are brilliant actors truly are and will no doubt be fantastic winners. I appreciate them, honest.

But, from a sponsors point of view having Tom and Jude flash-bulbing infront of sponsers adverts going viral across the next day, has a lot of value. I can’t see Celebitchy/Daily Mail or Hello etc putting a front page, click-bait article up saying Rory Kinnear wins Olivier, he isn’t Tom or Benny or Jude. They will probably show Hayley, but Lesley Manville ? The serious stuff is for the Guardian and Telegraph.

OF course we will always get the red-carpet dress shots 😀

I best say my post is not about reasons for them to win, btw, It was in response to Dara, its about incentive to get them to show up/ costs of travelling etc

      • Isadora says:

To a certain (international Hollywood-film-watching) audience – yes, then this statement is rather true. The question is only if the Olivier awards want to cater to the sleepy audience or not. (I guess not in the end, but if it’s easy they wouldn’t say no to the added attention.)

If I were them I would rather fly in Jude Law from Budapest than TH from Toronto, tbh. Cheaper, easier, faster.

Edit: ok, ‘p’enny was faster than me. 🙂

      • Janeite says:

The Oliviers are awards for theatre performances, not Hollywood ones. I understand that there are people who are only interested in a few of the actors that they are familiar with from movies, but I doubt that the Olivier organization is going to go to any great lengths to cater exclusively to that group.

      • JoAnn says:

I have never watched the Olivers…only looked at the after pictures to see who was in attendance, what they wore etc. Award shows bore me to tears. Actually, I hope Tom is there so we can get a good Hiddles post of him looking dashing in a tux. I hope he wins but I’ll just wait for the Tumblr reports the next day.

      • icerose says:

if you fly a lot you often benefit from free upgrades.I travelled several times first class with Air Canada on free upgrades through their air mile system although they have altered it a bit and it is a bit harder to hit those top levels now.

  28. Ellen says:

Just an observation in the top picture. It looks like he’s wet his Pants . Obviously it’s just the style but it does look like it

  29. Kelly says:

He sounds so goddamn normal in this interview that my pants nearly fell off.

Is it possible that underneath all the fluffy period romantic puke-tastic disney prince shennanigans there’s a regular dude who just wants to work and play like any other average fella in life?!
    Shocking

    • jammypants says:

      quite possibly 😉

    • Isadora says:

My first thought was: Luke is not in Toronto. Which would be quite sad if that’s the background of this rather laid back and nice interview.

Another explanation would be that his shennanigans are mostly related with the promotion of his Marvel films, which cater to a generally younger audience than OLLA for example.

    • 'p'enny says:

mighty fine – he looks dead sexy. I am loving the hair, it’s all ruffly and his strutty walk. I am going to say something cynical, but it’s no coincidence he has come out of hiding now, are those fan-photos or that press-guy? that was outside his hotel that time and warned everyone he ‘wasn’t taking pics outside his hotel’ because they are very good photos. almost too casual to be posed.

      love them. 😀

      • kaisei says:

It says “on April 10” so they are from yesterday, I doubt is that press guy, but no source is given so no idea. The mark of the cut on his forehead is still visible!

      • M.A.F. says:

They are starting to film outside scenes so I would imagine we will see more pictures of him. Charlie Hunnam was photograph yesterday while on set so hopefully we get see some of those photos.

      • Roberta says:

Penny – call me a cynic too, I thought those were standard pap pics except for the timing (ie after Hunnams pics and just before the Oliviers). Now Ive seen all of them I think they might be staged.

      • jammypants says:

Charlie looked quite fetching in period clothing.

      • Miss Melissa says:

Not cynical at all. I was thinking myself how funny it was that someone upthread mentions no sightings of him in Toronto and then “poof!” a sighting in Toronto.

    • Intro Outro says:

Oh yes. Looking very natural and sexy. This slightly preoccupied air becomes him ;P And is it that same cardigan he was wearing for some of The Dark World promotional interviews/Coriolanus opening feature/Top Gear? If it is – wow, that man doesn’t splurge easily, does he? XD

      • Isadora says:

He seems to own.. like.. 5 pieces of clothing (other than suits). And I love that haha.. It’s like the black sweater, some blue shirts, one red plaid shirt, the translucent grey one, a leather jacket. Even his blue Coriolanus rehearsal shirt was once a rehearsal shirt for Return to Cranford. And one of his scarves was part of his Edward costume in “Archipelago”.

Again: officially I haven’t noticed stuff like that at all.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Isadora, and the “bad boy pants in the bad boy drawer.”

      • Isadora says:

        ooooh yes. 😀

      • Intro Outro says:

*newbie alert* What are “bad boy pants in the bad boy drawer”? Sounds intriguing lol

      • Isadora says:

It’s a comment he made in this interview (first answer actually after the trailer):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbw3yX1qkN8 The interviewer looks spectacular, I might add, in that 90s blonde bombshell way. I want her to be in a superhero movie as well haha.. (and she seems pretty good informed – the Scottish farmer boy reference, she knows that he played rugby and stuff)

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Isadora:

        Thanks! Hiddles likes metaphors ;P

The interviewer really is nice and confident, doesn’t seem to be fawning over him like so many others do. Kudos to her!

      http://torrilla.tumblr.com/post/82381157210/torrilla-tom-hiddleston-in-toronto-on-april-10

I kind of think he’s studying lines, didn’t he say he can’t just sit at the desk but he goes out and walk? He looks like he is doing just that.

      • jammypants says:

That makes a lot of sense.

      • 'p'enny says:

He is trying not laugh on one or two of those pics – maybe is looking at this website on his mobile.

So staged, but I don’t care. I love these pics. Especially the loki-strut over shoulder pose, he does that pose so well.

I hope they end up somewhere other than a tumblr page, or its a bit of waste of pap-posing.

      • Kelly says:

        wow, he looks super cute

did he know the pap was there/ was going to be there?

    • Leah says:

Well he does have a movie coming out in the US today so that may have something to do with the interesting timing of the pictures. Plus, the Olivers. And so what? He is an actor and in show business so promote promote promote son!

  31. Gin Princess says:

Hello. Long time no post. He looks good in the new Toronto pics. Relaxed, and dare I say younger? Much softer in the face – in a good way – and happier. And a touch longer hair, which always suits him better. Still a touch too skinny for my liking but hopefully he is being fed. He looks good!

  32. Gin Princess says:

Edited to add: Oh God you can still see the mark on his bonce! How hard did he get whacked by that door? Looks like it must have been an A&E visit minimum. Can you imagine how bad the person who opened the door felt?!

  33. Gin Princess says:

Sorry about the double post :/

  34. Ellen says:

They look a bit staged to me. Not very natural going about his business like Charlie photos. He looks awkward and a bit embarrassed to be honest. I’m guessing this was Luke’s idea.
I’m glad he’s kept his weight from Coriolanus but he still needs to lose the tight fitting pants. He needs to dress for himself not for fans

Is he checking himself in the out in the shop window on one of the photos?

    • Make mine a double says:

Haha, I was thinking that. Saying that, I have an awful habit of checking myself in windows etc and I’m not TH, so if I were TH I know I’d do it so much more. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity…

    • jammypants says:

He definitely was checking himself out lol

As for the papping, I’m not sure on that. He made some weird faces in half the pics and looks pretty annoyed.

      • Roberta says:

I’m positive they’re set up: the pics are close up but he’s not looking at the camera in any of them, theres a variety of shots, and the giveaway – he’s wearing dress trousers and shoes. He wears smart when he knows he’ll be photoged (eg when travelling). I don’t know if its just me but it also looks like he’s made up. I know he’s filming, but still.

For some reason arranging pap shots really bothers me, I thought he was above this kind of crap.

      • jammypants says:

He wears the same clothes all the time lol! The only new thing is the jacket, which looks completely unflattering to me. Also if he was wearing makeup, wouldn’t he be orange with that weird line that stops at his hairline?

He’s not famous enough to bother with these thing, imo. I get what you are saying, but I’m just of a different opinion.

      • Ellen says:

@Jammy he’s an actor and a very good one which is why he’s treating this obviously staged sighting as part of his job. He’s pretending. Also someone said he seems to be smiling in one. That doesn’t look like his phone I’m sure his phone is white from other photos.
He can’t be too made up if these photos are meant to be natural. No one is complaining but everything points to it being staged

      • Make mine a double says:

And once again I give you: http://tomismonochromaticallyfabulous.tumblr.com/

      • Gin Princess says:

You can see his other phone in his pocket on one pic so he’s either a two phone guy or he has borrowed one or something. There looks like a barcode on the back of the one he’s holding so it don’t know. He still looks good although I wonder if he’s wearing make up. Deffo set up pictures but nice to see that face after so long!

      • 'p'enny says:

i noticed the second phone in his pocket LOL! is he a spook? probably wears his battery down every 5 mins and needs a second. He had a white phone in the Elle shoot.

And he isn’t wearing make up, whoever came up with one onTwitter needs to get their glasses checked.

      • Roberta says:

Jp, I agree about the jacket, but re the clothes the “smart” look started about a year ago. And the colour blind make up artist isn’t in Toronto.

      • 'p'enny says:

        @jammypants

he pulls those weird faces because he has a natural gift for being giff-bait. —-> see twitter/tumblr already the reflection in window has been perfectly reflected as Loki by some photoshop genius and there is a really funny gif floating around about what texts he is receiving.

        He is beautiful 😀

I can’t stop looking at these pics, they are brilliant. Hat’s off to this pap photographer, he knows composition very well. He must have done a 90degree turn on his wide angle to get all those long legs in. This can only be beaten now by a topless beach shot.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, I now have the rather comical image in my mind of a topless beach shot on the northern shores of Lake Ontario, which would probably be rather chilly at this time of year! But some of the cast are on vacation now so maybe you will get your topless beach shot from a warmer clime.

        @Make mine a double:

I love artful cussing ;D Adds so much colour!

    • Lilacflowers says:

I find it quite amusing how, without any evidence to support any theory one way or other, things go from “I think these might be staged” to “these are obviously staged.” People change telephones all the time, particularly when they are traveling to a different country. It is not unusual to have a throw-away for that. And the pants have a metal button-tabbed pocket, which is uncommon for “dress pants.”

      • jammypants says:

yea I agree. Some of the pics not posted on torrilla show him walking near construction sites completely absorbed on his phone, which makes me think he’s practicing his lines.

      • joe spider says:

Definitely not suit trousers (dress trousers to Americans?) and they aren’t the usual lace up shoes that he wears with a suit either.

And he is actually allowed out of his hotel to wander round!!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@joe spider, yes, “dress” or “suit” to describe pants is interchangeable.

      • Laura says:

It doesn’t have to be another phone. It may very well be the IPod he constantly talks about, you know the touch one that looks exactly like the IPhone.

      • Intro Outro says:

        Staged? Maybe.
        Makeup? Don’t see.
But tight trousers as a proof of dressing for fans? o_O Why? Hiddleston’s got long, skinny and straight legs, so hugging jeans and trousers are almost a natural choice lol. And they make them very comfy these days, you know, so that you don’t feel any unpleasant tightness in any parts 😛 Also, I’d have thought that he’d be more picky about his wardrobe if he were catering to his fans with his looks. His casual clothes look underwhelming. And just scream of a single guy 😀

      • Janeite says:

I’m not sure what reason there could be for staging photos. Just to get some publicity? I suppose it’s possible. Either way, I’m just glad there are some new pics of him. Nice to see.

      • Isadora says:

I, for one, doubt they are staged. He could have staged photos all the time, why start now in Toronto. And “looking too pretty” is not really a profound explanation for the staged argument.

And the shoes look exactly like the same ones he did Coriolanus stage door in (same sweater too): http://www.theavengersmen.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/131213-Tom-Hiddleston-01.jpg

      • joe spider says:

Poor guy can’t even walk down the street now without conspiracy theories cropping up!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Intro Outro, and skinny jeans are about all that is available in stores now.

  35. jammypants says:

Anyone having issues submitting comments? Mine either won’t go through or go missing after a time.

    • Roberta says:

Yes, I’m feeling insulted by other posters comments, again! Not yours though.

      • jammypants says:

aw you too? Mine were really harmless. Just pics of him walking lol

Don’t be insulted. You’re a lovely lass =) We can differ in perspective, but that’s what makes this site interesting.

  36. Ellen says:

The reason why I believe they are staged is all the above apart from the phone, is because they differ from the photos on the very rare occasions he is papped. Plus he let fans take selfies with him which he didn’t let them do in Toronto before. Why was he going to a spa in another hotel in the first place? Surly he’d be in one of the better ones? It all looks strange and with the timing.

I actually think that it isn’t a phone he’s holding but something he’s using for his lines. The burrowed brow and the small movement on his lips look like he’s reading and reciting something. He’s also said he likes to wonder and learn lines before as well.

    • Roberta says:

I completely agree Ellen, they do look different from previous pap pics. And these were posted both on Lainey and Just Jared today, which – in my opinion – speaks volumes. According to Lainey they were taken in Yorkville.

      • Gin Princess says:

The reason I think they are staged is that he has a specific ‘staged-pap pics face’. It’s all serious, annoyed and gorgeous –
and he has it on in the Capa script pics and these new ones.

It’s just too much of a coincidence that they suddenly appear when it’s a) been quiet for a while and b) the Charlie pics appeared and c) it’s Oliviers time. The person who took them appeared to have followed Tom for quite some time and not from a huge distance so I think he would know he was being snapped. I think if it had been real or annoying for Tom, he would have just hailed a taxi outta there.

The main reason I think they are staged is because you see him getting out of a taxi. What, a pap just happened to be on the street at the exact spot his taxi pulled up? – My stars, what a happy coincidence! The only way this could have happened is if the pap was tipped off, by Tom’s crew or A.N. Other.

I also think some of the pics have been touched up in some way, some seem almost soft-focus. Unless that has been done by the Tumblr brigade. I think that’s what is causing the make up confusion. The focus has been softened? I don’t know… Any experts out there can offer an opinion?

This isn’t a bad thing though, it’s not a mark against him – celebs do this all the time (often far more obviously) and it’s nice to see new pictures. It’s nice to see him looking relaxed and happy. So yey to staging pics – if indeed they are – because more Tom is always a nice thing 🙂

      • jammypants says:

staged or not, I’m so glad he isn’t orange

      • Intro Outro says:

I thought the soft focus thing actually proves they are real pap photos taken in quite a hurry. Looks to me like whoever took them tried increasing the sharpness afterwards in PS or whatever they’re using.

The pics Roberta and Isadora posted below which presumably are “real pap” photos are of a better quality. More “staged” quality than these Toronto ones. Also, who knows why there are no pics with Hiddleston staring at the camera? Maybe there were but the quality was so bad that the pap chose not to post them? Maybe Hiddles noticed the pap but didn’t feel like looking at the camera? Or maybe in the pic where he looks like he’s checking himself in the shop-window he’s actually looking at the pap? It totally looks like that to me lol. Either way, staged pap pics are such a minor charge on my personal transgression scale that I’m going to just enjoy the pics and laugh the rest off XD

    • Isadora says:

      Come on,… http://www.tomhiddleston.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/tumblr_mo6wdktVd01qeuzrdo8_500.jpg

The only difference is the warmer jacket and that he lost the god awful corduroy trousers. He even has the same sweater. And the same strut.

And he might not have been papped earlier in Canada because he was busy on set and has now some days off to wander the streets, see some sights, learn new lines and be a normal human being for a change.

      • kaisei says:

Roberta that is a photo from last year, if you enlarge the picture you can see he is holding the script for Capa’s movie.

      • Roberta says:

kaisei, I know it is. I posted it as an example of an actual pap picture and how it differs, as Ellen’s comment above.

      • Intro Outro says:

THIS is what happens when a guy wears the same clothes for years! Hiddles, go buy something new ASAP lol

Re: Roberta’s link: I thought that with years I got over my acute appreciation of male hands. How wrong I was 😀 This guy has got one, I mean two of the most beautiful hands I’ve ever seen! Such exquisite fingers..

      • Ellen says:

Tom never hangs around too long if he’s being stalked or papped as I’ve noticed on previous occasions.
Why did he take a cab not directly to another hotel with a spa? Why did then decide to walk back?
Don’t get me wrong I’m very happy to see new photos of him but he was definitely expecting them to be there. He’s not so innocent in the media game then what some of his fans think.

      • kaisei says:

        @Roberta, sorry my bad.

@Ellen Jim Beaver wrote back in February I think, that production sent him to have manicure for the film in another hotel, so it’s very likely this wasn’t even Tom’s idea.

      • 'p'enny says:

        @kaisei

I bet he needs clean and manicured hands and feet for those naked scenes, which i take a guess may be coming up. 😀

His feet are not his strong point, judging by the close ups they got in Thor 2. Seriously, that guy has bear-sized feet and toes that can climb trees.

But, thankfully he has very very very very very very sexy hands…

    • Ppp12 says:

He went to the spa of another hotel? Where did you get that? Anyways, they do look a bit staged. But the timing’s a bit odd. He’s in show business, so if that requires staging pap shoots, I’m sure he won’t be the first one to do so. So, no harm. I am just glad i get to see his pretty mug 😀 the lego loki version of this found on tumblr is hilarious though.

      • Isadora says:

Haha, yes, lego loki. This is quite funny too: http://www.tor.com/blogs/2013/07/thor-and-loki-on-godly-manifestations-of-power
It seems that tumblr is so deprived of Hiddles that these few pap shots encourage people to get highly creative.

      • Ellen says:

Haha we know what isadora was reading before the legend which is Lego Loki.

I’ve seen picture of him wearing that jacket before a couple of years ago. Maybe he found it in the back of his wardrobe. Wearing the same clothes all the time I agree someone needs to buy new ones. Most Men don’t like clothes shopping- I know my boyfriend makes a fuss. It proves he needs a girlfriend or if he has one she’s not doing her job of forcing him to try on new things. I swear he only has a new suits because they are given to him free and not because he shopped for one.

Any new sightings to prove he’s back in the UK? How long is a flight from Toronto to London anyway?

      • Isadora says:

Haha, yes, Ellen, it’s the link I posted earlier here to prove to Lilacflower that we are not the only ones that have way too many thoughts about Tom’s costumes. For purely professional reasons of course.

And I’m probably the only one who absolutely and utterly LOVES that he wears the same stuff all the time. Really. It proves that he has better things to do than splurge his money on fancy clothes and shopping sprees. And that he wears the things he likes until there is actually a reason to get rid of them, not just for the fun of it. We live in such a throwaway society anyway.

But this comes from someone who wears the same pieces all the time too. And they are mostly black on black, sometimes splashes of grey and *gasp* a bit of dark green. I actually have 4 identical black summerdresses in my wardrobe.

As to the flight schedule: it takes app. 7 hours (flight alone). So considering the time difference he must have boarded the plane yesterday evening to be in London today. And no, no sightings. Hm… :/

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Isadora, I have closets full of clothing and tend to wear the same four outfits constantly, and yes, they are mostly black with a few touches of gray. My secretary knows summer has arrived when I show up wearing colorful print dresses. And guys tend to be far more limited in options. If something works as far as comfort and looks and isn’t worn out, why does he need something new?

    • lunchcoma says:

I’m not saying they AREN’T staged, because I can usually only tell with the very obvious ones (yes, I mean you, pretty starlet walking around in an entirely new outfit, stilettos, and one tiny bag of groceries, and you cute families at the pumpkin patch). But if he is staging it, then he is really bad at staging pap pictures. Isn’t the point to show up wearing new clothes people have sent you for free, not things you’ve owned for years?

      • Isadora says:

Maybe Hiddles is especially sneaky. 😉 Or out and about to show off his new Montcler bubblet. lol

  37. Ellen says:

The selfies were taken the same day and what he’s wearing is not really the issue.

Jessica has said she’s got 10 days off however this may NOT apply to Tom. The fact that he’s still in Toronto is a sign that he might be still filming his scenes. Charlie, Jim andMia are still filming so it’s possible that Tom might be in the same scenes as them.

  38. kaisei says:

What did I say? No way he would miss it.
    http://t.co/zZ2mSGLMBl

  39. Isadora says:

He arrived on the red carpet! YAY!!! Torrilla has pics and the Olivier Awards on twitter! 🙂

  40. joe spider says:

Never ceases to amuse me how many theories I read on here! 😉

    • Lilacflowers says:

I was just thinking the same thing.

      • joe spider says:

He couldn’t just possibly be doing ordinary just like the other actors. And not that you can do much with a black tie ensemble, which he rocks anyway.

    • Isadora says:

Ah well, that’s a big part of the fun with gossip isn’t it? I mean, in the end we don’t know anything. About anyone. 🙂 It’s all a huge part fiction and (conspiracy) theories. And I hope nobody takes this too serious.

(Plus I’m sick at home with a cold and bored out of my mind.)

      • joe spider says:

Well if the pollsters in the Guardian have their way he is home and hosed:

        http://www.theguardian.com/stage/poll/2014/apr/10/reader-poll-olivier-awards-theatre-2014

Whether he wins or not it is a big thing to be nominated this year, given the competition.

      • Lilacflowers says:

As we said, we are amused.

      • joe spider says:

Hope you are soon feeling better Isadora, you need Tom to come round and stroke your fevered brow. (Or something!)

      • Isadora says:

Aw, thank you! 🙂 (Tachycardia, here I come!) It’s not really bad, I’m more annoyed and, well, bored than anything haha..

      • browniecakes says:

‘Hosed’ did you say?! That means the opposite in America, I think. Funny.
Sorry you’re sick Isadora. My movie going companion is sick so I will be seeing OLLA another day. 87% + on Rotten Tomatoes, even higher with the top critics. Not only looking forward to seeing TNT (Tom and Tilda) but my hometown of Detroit as well.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Hope you feel better soon, Isadora, without any cardiac events. Why can’ t the Oliviers be live-broadcast somewhere, anywhere? This Twitter thing is driving me nuts.

      • Isadora says:

        Thank you! 🙂
        TNT – love that!
And there will be some kind of highlight TV stuff on ITV later – but I’m not sure everyone can see it (there is some regional limitation).

      • Intro Outro says:

@Isadora: hope you’re feeling better today!

      • Isadora says:

Oh yes, thank you! Hot tea makes everything better. 🙂

    • jammypants says:

      haha same

    • Lilacflowers says:

That’s positive news. Sorry to hear Railway Man isn’t faring too well. I frequently take a relative, who is an advanced elder, to films and she was hoping to see that one.

    • joe spider says:

Good to know, will help Tom hopefully. I went to see the film in FEb and enjoyed it in a quiet sort of way.

    • 'p'enny says:

      gooooood goodey good drops.

no one expects it to make millions, but a good showing per screen is a good show. Disappointed to read the Railway Man isn’t performing as well. it took quite a few mill in the UK. Always, one to support Colin Firth films. Before Tom, was Colin F, Daniel C, Benny C, and well its an endless list..

  42. 'p'enny says:

Tom Hiddles is looking delightful, no orange tan, skin smooth as peaches and being adorable to his fans.

    He is looking hot.

I expect tomorrow Kaiser a big BIG full on page report… commiserations or celebrations Tom is rocking it.

I swear this guy is getting better, i think he may have lost some of Coriolanus weight, his shoulders are thinner but in the face there is enough puppy fat to keep him loooking lovely. Where as last year, he defo went too thin for a time.

Tom – keep the weight gain hunny. xx

p.s no sign of jude law ?????

  43. Ppp12 says:

Non-Olivier question: Was it actually mentioned anywhere that he was on his way to the spa while out in toronto the other day? Or was it one of those things someone commented as a half-joke and the rest decided to carry it forward?

    • joe spider says:

And how would anyone know where he was going unless they were stalking?

    • 'p'enny says:

It was mentioned on the Lainey website , it is a specialist in feet and hands. No idea if there was truth in it or not. But, Jim Beaver mentioned on his website he was treated too, or ordered too get a manicure, last Feb? i think. And, somewhere along the lines the rumour mill has said it is the same place.

Tom is pencilled in for some heavy-duty sexy scenes [in my imagination] he needs good, nice , sexy hands. [more than usual] :-p

And his feet defo need attention, anways.

      • Intro Outro says:

Somewhere on Youtube I saw a comment from del Toro about Crimson Peak and its supposed kinkiness where he said that he’s generally very conservative when it comes to filming sex scenes, so basically what seems “kinky” to him might actually not be all that kinky for everyone else 8D

Well. I confess that I really do hope that whatever kinky scenes are planned in the film, they *will* be kinky not only in del Toro’s world 😛

    • Lilacflowers says:

Apparently, it was mentioned on Lainey or some other gossip site that he went to the same spa that several of the other Crimson Peak actors were sent to earlier in the filming. It must have been close enough for him to decide to walk back.

    • jammypants says:

I don’t think anyone really knows.

      • Make mine a double says:

Secret tracking device hidden in the I’m so British cardigan. And the fact I let Sean Bean out of the boot to follow him…

      • Lilacflowers says:

Well, makemineadouble, that explains everything! Sean Bean is quite good at tracking when he isn’t dying. Good thing that Tom didn’t spot him or there would have been carnage on the streets of Toronto.

    • Roberta says:

It was on Just Jared, although I don’t know if that was where it was posted originally:
      http://www.justjared.com/2014/04/11/tom-hiddleson-very-much-wants-to-play-a-normal-character-who-wears-jeans/

It was posted on Lainey as well.

  44. joe spider says:

I’m having the disappearing posts problem now.

  45. joe spider says:

    and rory kinnear wins

  46. Make mine a double says:

    Rory Kinnear for Iago.

  47. Isadora says:

Rory Kinnear was actually my bet. I was still hoping Hiddles could bag this one. 🙁

Ugh… 7 hours flight for nothing. I feel a bit bad for him.

    • Intro Outro says:

Yeah, mine too. I think Hiddleston’s Hollywood kind of fame might be working against him actually. But Kinnear was amazing as Iago, wasn’t he? I normally do not care for Othello productions, have seen way too many, but Kinnear absolutely mesmerised me in that Hytner production. Although I have to say that Lester and Vinall didn’t impress me nearly as much as Kinnear and Marshal. And such a pity Gatiss didn’t win! Although tbh I thought that Findlay deserved a nomination more than Gatiss did. Imo. She was simply SUPERB.

      • jammypants says:

I thought Findlay overacted in some parts.

      • Isadora says:

jammypants, contrary to popular opinion I agree with you.

@intro outro “I think Hiddleston’s Hollywood kind of fame might be working against him actually.”

noooo, but maybe, although there is an elitist streak in the theatre world, i think Tom’s absence away from the theatre world might have gone against him. I think it is a bit cheeky to spend, five years away ? and just wheel in and get best actor? mmmm. Rory, bless his heart acts his socks off in theatre and tv drama, year in year out. Makes a difference. Anyone see him in Black Mirror?

Tom needs to be hitting the stage at least every 2 years and building up his drama condentials.

      • 'p'enny says:

credentials, duh, too much red wine ‘blush’

      • Lilacflowers says:

‘p’enny, I’m laughing because I didn’t notice that- probably because I had too much red wine last night!

      • jammypants says:

Rory was really good in Black Mirror.

@isadora, thank goodness! I was starting to think maybe I’m in the minority or the only one who feels differently…so THIS is supposed to knock my socks off? I even cringed at parts.

      • Isadora says:

@jammypants: yeah, I know most people just loved her. As in loved, loved, loved her. But I have to admit I definitely watch way more film than theatre, also partly because I love the subtlety of film and the way an actor can do no more than twitch slightly to express so much (and Hiddles excels in that). I realise that this is not possible in a theatre, but I’m still quite hypersensitive about overacting – as in everyone else is okay with it and I cringe a bit. (It’s even worse in my mother tongue)

In Findlay’s defense though: I’m not sure how much the broadcast enhanced this problem for me because it’s a theatre performance with film technique (all the close-ups etc.). It could be that the atmosphere was a bit different live.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @jammypants, Isadora:

I see your point about Findlay, ladies, and I can even agree partly, but I usually kinda sorta forgive theatre actors for slightly overplaying their parts because it’s almost a theatrical schtick. To make sure that even the last rows get that you’re upset/happy/angry lol. I thought it was interesting how Findlay played Volumnia almost grotesquely at the beginning of the play and then slowly changed the nuances and made her terrific at the end. And I also *believed* that this was the mother that made Coriolanus what he was, and that he really did submit to her morally. In other words, Findaly’s stage presence made me believe she had this power over him, you know? Because judging by what an angry and arrogant man he was, his mother had to be really overbearing to make the viewers believe she had this degree of authority over him. Hence this over-acting.

Re: overacting: to be completely honest, I thought TH did a bit of that in a couple of scenes in Coriolanus, too. Mostly by way of body language. Again, this is theatre, so I was expecting it and do not complain. I think he handles himself differently and absolutely fine in films.

        @’p’enny:

“I think it is a bit cheeky to spend, five years away ? and just wheel in and get best actor?”

Exactly my thought! I also thought that some might not even forgive him that. He absolutely needs to appear on stage more often to be able to grab that Olivier. Still, nomination is also great, isn’t it? ^_^

      • jammypants says:

@InnieOutie (can I call you that? :p), I judged solely on the NTL footage I watched. It’s a shame I couldn’t see it in person. I’m sure it translated better in person. I enjoyed her quieter moments better.

      • Isadora says:

        @Intro:
yes, I see your points, it makes sense in a way that Volumnia is really THERE and dominates a scene. And you are right the transition was great, I liked her much better at the end of the play. As to overacting: even his “wife” – as few as her lines were – did a bit in the scene when she doesn’t want to go out. But yes, the last row problem, definitely. 😉 And Hiddles… erm.. I might have been a bit dazzled by the tight trousers/treggings and in a forgiving mood. Plus I really like Coriolanus as a character actually lol. But I definitely need to watch it again, once was probably not enough to get all the fine points of the acting performances (as it was also a rather unknown play for me. It’s not exactly Hamlet.)

First and foremost I need to watch The Hollow Crown though. I have the DVDs sitting here for some time, kind of saving it for the right moment and bathing in anticipation lol.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @jammypants:

“InnieOutie (can I call you that? :p)” Aww, I like that! Pity that didn’t occur to me when I was choosing a nick for this site ;D

Re: overacting in Coriolanus: I also only saw in on screen, but I confess I watched it several times *blushes and shuffles feet* And I am glad I did because Shakespearean English isn’t exactly easy to understand for non-native speakers and I hadn’t read the play before I watched that Donmar production. So first time I concentrated on plot and dialogues, and afterwards I was able to pay attention namely to acting.

        @Isadora:

I *still* haven’t watched Henry V. Also kinda savouring the anticipation lol

    • Lilacflowers says:

Well, not necessarily for nothing. He got to go home for the first time in over a month and probably got to see some friends and family.

      • Isadora says:

Yes, you are right. I hope he really has a few days off to see them and is not supposed to rush back to Canada tomorrow.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Maybe he’ll make another Jaguar commercial while he’s home.

    • Isadora says:

I haven’t seen it, so I can’t say anything. I was just (over)analysing the response from theatre goers and reactions to the announcement of the nominées. That’s how I work out my Oscar bets every year lol.

      • Intro Outro says:

I do feel bad for Hiddles =( To me, Othello wasn’t as satisfying a production as Coriolanus was. It was more.. jarring in many places. So I was rooting for TH also because the production was soo good and tight and coherent. More so than Othello IMO.

Btw. Othello is on the Internet, you can find it if you really really want to ~_^

      • Isadora says:

Ah.. ok, thank you! The internet, our demise and savior. 😉

  48. Intro Outro says:

Awww, poor Hiddles! But it’s almost an honour to lose to Kinnear, his Iago was so deliciously psychotic and devilish!

  49. joe spider says:

Rory ‘All of us nominated would agree that’s easier to be recognised in something like this when you’ve got a decent part to play’

    • Isadora says:

Thanks! The more (hq) I see of his outfit, the more I like it. Very classic, but the black buttons and patent shoes are lovely touches and make it more individual. A bit like the bow tie with the little skulls in Cannes, which I absolutely loved. So it was hard to top that.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And that photo looks classic and elegant and really seems to accentuate his lovely hands.

  50. Ellen says:

Where’s the super hot Tom from the other day or the even hotter Coriolanus Tom? Why does he wear that orange? I like his hair it’s natrual dark blonde color.

Although disappointed mr H lost I’m glad the excellent Rory won. I was also hoping mr H might of brought his mama to the event but he just brought creepy luke instead.

I wonder how many days he’s got off or if he’s going straight back to Toronto?

    • joe spider says:

Where have you seen the orange .

      • Ellen says:

        On twitter/tumblr/Instagram/pin interest

There’s one picture of Mr H hugging Mr Creepy and Mr H was certainly not orange from the Toronto photos. Still at least it’s toned down a bit.

    • 'p'enny says:

if you see orange, you need to turn the contrast down on your computer. I’ve been watching the twitter pics, from paps and fans and there isnt a trace of orange., hair or face make up

yes luke was there, they hugged. must be a first meet up for a while.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I didn’t see any orange either and he greeted Luke at the event, which would indicate that they met there and he did not bring him. Agreed, ‘p’enny, looks like they hadn’t met up for a while, unless he has taken to just hugging people constantly.

      • Ellen says:

Ignore the orange comment. I mistaken a photo someone put up from last year.

He should of kept the Coriolanus weight though. Being a little bulked out suited him. I can see the boo boo scar is still there, must of been one hell of a knock on the head.

Oh well now we have after awards party photos to look forward to now. Bring them on!!

      • 'p'enny says:

        @Ellen

LOL there are a lot of mixed up photos.

And that scar is looking very sweet, adding a real kissable factor to his forehead. Bless. But, i do wonder if the person responsible is feeling pretty mortified.

I hope there are some good after-show party shots, but i wonder if he prefer to slip off and spend time with his loved ones, before nipping back to Toronto.

    • Isadora says:

He doesn’t wear any make-up, it seems, so no orange – thank god.

    • eugene says:

He looks orange in some photos because of the reflected light from the red carpet. The photographer is the one to blame, not his skin, makeup or our eyes.

  51. 'p'enny says:

MARK STRONG!!!!! for those who love him here on this board, he is at the Olivier awards, too, he is very handsome and smooooth.

  52. joe spider says:

For those saying it would have been cheeky if he had come back after 5 years and won, how come? He is not responsible for the nomination .

    • 'p'enny says:

i’m the one who said ‘cheeky’ – hiddles is a brilliant actor, you know the love i have and will defend him a lot. but i like to think i am not ‘too’ rose-tinted, he deserved the nomination and he deserved to win. But, i haven’t seen the other performances to really judge. I consider it cheeky because and i said it in response to the poster before who thought his marvel movies may have been an influencing factor against his win. [That i didn’t agree with.] But, voters will recognise a stronger/polished performance from actors who have year in year out done theatre and dramadies like Rory Kinnear and Lesley Manville.

Tom said last year he was returning to the stage, because it what keeps him sharp, to expert eyes that five year gap may have been noticeable to those who know how to judge a good performance in a very high calibre field of this year.

Tom will get better and better as an actor, he is only 33 and has been having the time of his life since Thor. But his classical theatre skills have not been in practise, except for Hollow Crown and there he can say – cut and retake.

Also, it didn’t slip my notice that Stephen Managhan mentioned Tom and Jude being the Hollywood actors in the audience, like the Oliviers were honoured or something. That isn’t fair on Tom, [not that he will complain] there are plenty of actors in that audience who has been in hollywood films. It was like that silly wench, Emma Freud who presented NT Live and inbetween the filming of Coriolanus she focused on Tom’s sex appeal instead of his shakespearean acting CV

      • joe spider says:

Emma Freud absolutely made me, you, Josie O’Rourke and the world cringe with that!

And I understand what you mean.

    • Intro Outro says:

It was I who said about TH’s Hollywood fame probably being a hampering factor, but I meant it exactly in the sense ‘p’enny explains here. I probably should have made my point clearer, sorry.

It’s not Hiddleston’s fault at all, and he absolutely deserved the nomination (I only saw Coriolanus and Othello so I can’t really judge Law’s performance). It’s rather a matter of voters being more inclined to support a brilliant performance from a regular theatre actor than an equally brilliant performance from a film actor who just returned on stage after a long break. I think that in such a situation, voters probably feel they need to encourage actors who primarily dedicate their life to theatre.

      @’p’enny:

I agree about the “Hollywood actors” reference. That really is one of the instances of how Marvel films might be casting a shadow on how TH is perceived. Well, since I am not a big fan of Thor/Avengers franchise, I am very glad Thor 3 is a long way away.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And hadn’t Kinnear won two other awards for this performance in Othello earlier? So, he was on a roll and pretty much unstoppable at this point.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Lilacflowers:

Oh yes, he did! I think he shared one award with Lester, too. I’m glad Hiddles lost namely to Kinnear and not to Law, it made sense.

    • Sixer says:

I know I always drop and rain on the parade (sorry!) but the Horny Helmet’s Hollywood status would have enhanced his chances of a nomination rather than disadvantaged him. It’s common knowledge that the Oliviers are trying for a bigger profile (both domestic and international). The press packs all talk specifically about how it’s getting harder and harder to distinguish between film and stage actors (yes – they do think we’re all stupid, sigh) and these have been quoted verbatim on TV news reports of the ceremony. This is the image they want to put forward. Come to the theatre! All the comic book movie stars are there in the flesh! Roll up! Roll up! And they do need bums on seats.

You can see on theatre boards that the lay judges have in several years recently felt under pressure to give priority to household names when drawing up their shortlists.

This is not to say that I don’t think the Horny Helmet deserved his nomination. I thought the production was not at all good, but he was pretty good. It’s just to say that the bigger the name, the MORE likely you are to get a nom IF you turn in good work: not the LESS.

Kinnear is slowly but surely taking SRB’s spot as the man that can do no wrong, isn’t he? I think he was a shoe-in for the win from the start.

Still think the cast of Chimerica were robbed vis a vis nominations – thanks to the whole household name thing. Meh.

      • Intro Outro says:

        @Sixer:

“It’s just to say that the bigger the name, the MORE likely you are to get a nom IF you turn in good work: not the LESS”

Big yes to that, but we were talking about how much film fame/active film career can actually count for or against WINNING the Olivier, not getting nominated for it. A household name is perfect for receiving a nomination, drawing additional attention to Oliviers in this case, but in the end the voters are more likely to vote for somebody like Kinnear – who has a more established theatre footing.

      • Sixer says:

I think two things won it for Kinnear – one, as I suggested above, he’s the flavour of the moment, much as SRB was a few years back; two, the Othello production as a whole was of a much higher standard. While it’s not *that* difficult to get an acting nomination on the back of a play with no production nominations, it’s much harder to get the win.

I’d be inclined to say that Kinnear’s current darling status conferred advantage, yes. But I don’t think Hiddleston’s being away for some time conferred disadvantage. A subtle difference perhaps, but a clear one.

      • Intro Outro says:

Fair point about Kinnear, and while I still remain of the opinion that TH’s recent career development might have been a disadvantage, I do believe that honouring big bonus points that come with Kinnear ultimately weighs more than paying too much attention to the minus attached to Hiddleston 😉

Re: Othello production: I thought it hadn’t received any production nominations either (do I understand this correctly and you mean best play/director/etc?). The general tone of Othello/Coriolanus reviews was pretty similar, though I think Othello got two or three five-star ratings while Coriolanus didn’t climb higher than four stars. Plus Kinnear received a couple of other awards for it, so yes, it was all playing into his gates again.

But but. I love Kinnear, so it was a win/win situation for me with Oliviers this year lol.

      • Sixer says:

IIRC, Othello was up for best revival. So the overall production received a nod. IYSWIM. And I suppose by higher standard, I really mean that the Othello production had more sophistication. The Coriolanus was all a bit eager undergraduate for me. I thought Tom was great but I do think justice has been done there.

Generally speaking, I understand why the Oliviers are doing what they’re doing but I do think it’s a shame that the casts of wondrous productions like Chimerica are so disadvantaged in favour of the housewives and tumblrite favourites. If there was any true integrity in the awards then the lists would have looked quite different. Ho hum. That’s the nature of arts awards, though, isn’t it?

      • Intro Outro says:

Oh you’re right, Othello *was* nominated for best revival, my mistake! Then indeed the whole production did receive this nod. Even if it might have been more perfunctory 😉 I’m probably being biased, too, because Othello is one of my least favourite Shakespeare plays; besides, I did not dig some of Hytner’s creative pas in Othello. But I do see your point about sophistication, although in Coriolanus’ defense I thought its style and dynamic suited Donmar’s space perfectly. Nothing jarred, everything worked towards the clearly set goal, and I appreciate this.

Re: arts awards and Oliviers: agreed completely. It’s the same in most of the countries, too, not only in Britain. Some of my British friends raved about Chimerica, and it’s such a shame that NT Live are not planning to broadcast it =( Although maybe Almeida theatre just does not qualify for an NT Live broadcast? I have no idea about their selection procedure. Oh well. Will make do with King Lear next, I’m eager to see what Mendes and SRB made of it, the reviews were somewhat mixed.
