Sean Penn to direct Charlize Theron in African drama, they’re ‘not engaged – yet’

charlize1

It’s been a while since I’ve heard much about Charlize Theron and Sean Penn. I was actually idly wondering last week if there was trouble in ham-faced paradise, but then Bedhead informed me that Sean had just announced a new project, which he will direct, and Charlize is going to play the lead. Guess who else is in it? Adele Exarchopoulos, the French girl who kissed the ham-face in Paris. Guess Adele and Sean were meeting about the movie. Here’s more:

An interesting film project is quickly coming together now with Sean Penn, Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem, which is readying to be shot in Africa. The love story, called The Last Face, will be directed by Penn and is on the verge of getting the go-ahead from River Road and Bill Pohlad, with Bill Gerber and Matt Palmieri also producing. Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is The Warmest Color) is also on board. Theron, who is romantically linked with Penn, will star as a doctor who doing humanitarian relief work in Africa amidst violent political conflicts in the region. She meets another doctor (Bardem) who is doing the same work, and the story revolves around tough moral decisions that must be made during time of civil unrest. Exarchopoulos is expected to play a journalist.

[From Deadline]

Sean Penn… Charlize Theron… Javier Bardem… Africa? It sounds a bit like that Angelina Jolie movie, Beyond Borders, which no one saw (I tried to watch it but even Angelina and Clive Owen weren’t enough for me). Anyway, the point is that Charlize and Sean are still together, and they’re planning for the long haul. People Magazine had this story on Monday as well:

Sean Penn and Charlize Theron are getting more and more serious about each other, but recent reports that the actor popped the question are false. Friends of the couple “wouldn’t be surprised” by a proposal, says the insider. “But she’s not engaged – yet.”

The two took their romance public in January at Penn’s third annual Help Haiti Home gala after appearing to be more than just friends during a holiday trip to Penn’s beachfront home in Oahu, Hawaii, where the pair celebrated the New Year together.

The Oscar winners then spent Valentine’s Day weekend together in Cabo San Lucas.

“They were inseparable,” an eyewitness told PEOPLE of their Mexican vacation. “They held hands everywhere they went.”

[From People]

Not engaged… yet. That portends doom. Here’s my prediction (and no, don’t hold me to this): I think they probably will get engaged. Maybe at some point this year. I think they’ll be together for about a year, maybe they’ll even make it to next year’s Oscars. But they won’t ever marry. That’s just my gut gossip instinct, nothing more.

His face is so disturbingly distracting it actually pulls my attention away from her face.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, they look so odd together. I know that’s shallow, but they do.

      • Hiddles forever says:

Same here… I usually try not to judge people from the cover but Penn is creepy though… Ham face outside and angered man inside (or so he was…)

  4. Marlayn says:

    Charlize quit twerking your face!!!

  5. kikky says:

This article explains a lot about strange Penn’s behavior, what he’s doing with that Last face movie is lame, just to get back to Robin, I wonder why after all these years…is she still burning in his heart? Charlize, you poor tool.

can’t believe you posted this too! it has to be known! Kaiser, this revenge thing is juicy news!

Wow, dick move Burnt Bacon, dick move.

    • FingerBinger says:

You do realize Richard Johnson wrote a column based on an anonymous comment from some website? He actually quotes an anonymous poster. Now it’s supposed to be gospel. SMDH

      • fanty says:

Richard Johnson is not the last kid on the block. He’s a respected old school journalist. He quoted a commenter, but also industry sources. And he’s quite well known in the industry. Nice try.

      • FingerBinger says:

Richard Johnson is no journalist. He’s one of the laziest gossip writers out there. The story is B.S. If it was a “labor of love” Wright would have gotten the film made.I’m also pretty sure that Charlize knows that Wright was once attached to the project, seeing that Hollywood is a ‘small town’. I hope this film gets accolades and gets nominated and/or wins Oscars.

      • fanty says:

Now you’re supposed to know more than a respected Pagesix gossip columnist? How do you know is B.S? Is what you THINK, as a freak Sean Penn pathological fan. Or should I say employee? All you wrote are things you want to believe yourself, not facts.

      • FingerBinger says:

@fanty I didn’t realize Richard Johnson was a “respected gossip columnist,” pardon me. Pathological fan or an employee? I’m neither, but you sound like a paranoid loon. “All you wrote are things you want to believe yourself, not facts.” What Richard Johnson wrote was gossip. By definition, gossip isn’t fact either, genius.

    • goopita says:

This is interesting! There was a blind item a couple of days ago on CDAN that said Ben Affleck had sex with the wife of an Oscar winner and that’s because they hated each other. When Argo won for best movie at the Oscars I remember somebody saying that Sean Penn was jealous of Ben’s win because all of his movies as a director were snubbed by the Academy and were b.o. flops. Now most of this b.i. guesses are Robin Wright. One even says that Ben and Robin worked together in State of Play in 2007 and that’s where they hooked up and right after happened the first of the Penns’ separations. Is this the reason why Sean Penn hates so much Robin Wright and wants to get even.? That would explain also why he didn’t thank her in his Oscar speech and why he insulted her in every interview he did after the divorce.

      • FingerBinger says:

@goopita People were guessing Robin Wright. They also guessed Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. ‘Into the Wild’, his last movie, wasn’t really snubbed. It was nominated for best supporting actor. I’ve never heard that Ben Affleck and Sean Penn hated each other ever. Also ‘State of Play’ was filmed in 2008 not 2007 and released in 2009. That’s after the 2007 divorce filing and reconciliation. Another thing, he hasn’t insulted her in every interview. There was one interview where he said he didn’t feel loved. That’s an insult?

      • goopita says:

@fingerbinger: well if the film was shoot in 2008 that makes the RW guess more accurate because coincides with the last rocky year of their marriage. Getting just one nom for supporting actor doesn’t seems like a snub to you? Out of 4 movies that he directed? If you didn’t heard about the Ben/Penn jealousy that’s your problem, I know I did. Saying about the mother of your children that “she’s a ghost”, “that she “took” half your money with the divorce, and that she never loved you despite 20 years together and two children isn’t insulting according to you? Well, a lot of people would disagree, but not everybody has the same background, so that’s very subjective. You seem like a very pro-Penn commenter, really, without animosity, tell us: what’s your game? you seem obsessed with Penn. There’s no need to respond so aggressively. We’re just talking about gossip here, relax.

      • FingerBinger says:

@goopita First off I’m not responding aggressively. Aggressive is cursing and/or saying rude things. I’ve been very polite. I guess you don’t like being contradicted and you see that as aggression. You seem to be projecting. Secondly,Sean Penn has directed four movies, but what makes you think that he expected any of them to be nominated. Most of these film makers have a story to tell and don’t always expect the it to be recognized. Another thing,I don’t think you’re being truthful about hearing about Penn/Affleck jealousy before you read that blind item. Also, the blind item didn’t say “Oscar winner” it said “A list actor”. I noticed you added that to fit your argument. As for his views on Robin. If someone took half the money I earned I wouldn’t have warm fuzzy feelings and neither would you. Is that succinct enough for you? Or was that aggressive?

  6. Forthelasttime says:

He’s revolting. For god’s sake, couldn’t she do any better than him? What the hell is going on in Hollywood??

  7. Sasha says:

The ham must have good game. He has beauties with their pick of men (and not completely vapid women, either) falling over themselves to be with him. I know the general impression of him is that he’s an asshole, but there must be something about him that gets these ladies hooked. I wonder what it is.. ?

    • TG says:

@Sasha – maybe he is a nice guy to them but I know a lot of women who date a$&holes. For some reason women find that challenging.

    • huh says:

I hear he is wicked charismatic

    • raindrop says:

Seriously, the man has dated/married a string of extraordinarily beautiful women – Madonna in her heydey, Robin, Charlize. Didn’t he suck face with Natalie P?

    • hushgush says:

From different sources that actually saw the peen in picture is said not that big thing. They say it’s weird. Not dong. When he lived in SF he actually loved to flash it to random women at bars, while he was drunk, and that is almost all the time. His charm I think is has actually to do with the “tormented artist” he plays, that many women, intelligent women (strange but true) want to try. The thing is that is ok to try the so called tormented peen just for a couple of weeks. Otherwise ask Madonna and Robin Wright for references.

  8. Dani2 says:

I’ve been a big fan of Charlize’s since I was eleven but I just can’t with her obvious poor taste in men.

  9. Hautie says:

The thing that gives me a pause… about this love connection and that it will go all the way… is that I have stopped seeing Sean Penn smoking.

As in, normally he always had a cigarette in his mouth or holding on to a lit one. He could barely walk out of any building, without immediately lighting up.

Where as you see practically every female under the age of 60…. with a cell phone in their hand constantly. Penn always had a pack of cigarette’s in his hand. I have stopped seeing that.

Did Sean decide that Charlize was worth having to deal with a nicotine patch instead?? Because he was too attached to smoking to stop, cold. If so… dang. The man has it bad. So bad that he gave up his first love, Marlboro’s in the hard pack.

  10. sandra Michell says:

In all of this years in showbiz Sean Penn has never been so showy about his personal life. All this People and Eonline articles are obviously authorized by his publicist. The “source” in this cases is not other that the actor’s entourage and when they orchestrate photo ops and articles this way it just means that they’re managing the information they wanted to be out for the public to know. So the question is: why a notorious shy actor like Penn all of a sudden is everywhere with his new flame? Why he wants us to know so desperately about his romantic life? That article on page six about his new movie is a hint for the answer.

    • FingerBinger says:

I guess you missed the years he was married to Madonna because that got a lot of coverage.

      • sandra Michell says:

Oh, I’m happy that you bring back Madonna because back then was her people leaking the info. That just proves my point. Thanks.

      • FingerBinger says:

So then Madonna was allegedly leaking information and not Sean? Just because you say Madonna’s “people” were “leaking the info” doesn’t make it a fact. You didn’t prove anything.

      • goopita says:

Well if there’s anybody in the showbiz who used the press, good or bad, macro managing the information as she wanted to get attention that was Madonna. Just saying. It’s true also that we’ve never seen Penn and Theron getting photographed as much as since they started dating.

  11. mytbean says:

    hmm…

Maybe this is just a publicity stunt for both of them. They appreciate each other for creative muse-like reasons. He wants to make a film, she wants to be in a film and they thought this would be a buzz booster. Not that they couldn’t also be making it a temporary booty call of the convenience variety as well…

Like so many people, I find it really hard to believe this paring… She could have had Keanu once upon a time – that’s all I’m saying.

  12. mia girl says:

    Take as old as time…
    Beauty and the Beast.

  13. poppy says:

not only does their pairing boggle the mind, and maybe i’m being harsh, but i have a hard time seeing her as a doctor that has been “doing humanitarian relief work in Africa amidst violent political conflicts in the region”. maybe it’s her lack of worry wrinkles and not her lack of ability to play someone hyper intelligent that would risk their life?

  14. nbcn says:

i hope seanpenn next fime leading actress Adele Exarchopoulos

  15. harpreet says:

The film sounds…troubling. Another movie on beautiful white people working in exotic Africa, great…..

    • Omega says:

Oh dont you worry your pretty little head, Sean understands the template for making a film about Africa.

      1) a white couple – AKA the saviors
      2) black women and children – AKA the victims
      3) black men – AKA the savages
      4) ONE African fighting his “nature” and doing humanitarian work- AKA the exception

So rest assured that there will be ONE well spoken African doctor, teacher or driver. He will have some great expository lines, explaining how his country has come to this and why the “saviors” are such a welcome sight. But whatever you do, please dont expect him to be 3 dimensional character. And when he inexplicably disappears from the story, please dont ask where he went. This is a movie about “Saviors”, not Africans however well spoken they may be.

    • Leila says:

      I know right?!

  16. RubyGloom says:

    Run Charlize, gurl run!

  17. Tania says:

I love Charlize but no to this man 🙁 Her son is the cutest.

  18. roxy750 says:

Seriously Charlize as independent and beautiful as she seems she is just an average insecure woman who thinks she can’t do better. I have given her a major downgrade in my ranking of her.

  19. Jem says:

I don’t know why, but somehow I thought Charlize was this towering, tall beauty and Sean was troll-short. But here they appear to be the same height-? That’s all I got.

    • Clarissa says:

The picture you see where she looks the same height:
-The ground of the street is descending and she’s ahead at the lower level of it
      -she’s wearing flats
      -he’s wearing heels
In the 3th picture you get the difference. He’s a dwarf.

  20. lrm says:

Wow-Penn looks very different now that he’s with charlize-i mean, still the wrinkled ham face-but he is following her around like a puppy dog-he almost seems confused by his own transformation-like he’s not sure how to act or who he is supposed to be now. He looks almost uncomfortable/insecure around her as though he cannot be the hard-as* with swagger that he normally is/acts like.

This should be interesting-definitely don’t see them together long term…but who knows.

  21. itsetsyou says:

It’s mean, but… he always looks like her social work project, trailing behind.

  22. Pants says:

How exactly does one go from Stuart Townsend who is ADORABLE to this? How?!

  23. Bea says:

Yeah, this is going to end well.

  24. Lem says:

Header pic: i wondered what Hillary Clinton was doing with Sean Penn

when stunning Charlize morphs to scrunchy Clinton the douchenozzle must be super strength

  25. Jayna says:

I am happy to see him directing again.

    • FingerBinger says:

+1 Sounds like it might be a good movie despite these negative comments. He’s a great actor/director.

  26. Veronica Lodge says:

I know, I know he’s a jackass. I met him in the early 00’s, when I worked at a high end dept. store. He was married to the amazing RWP at the time. I rang his purchases up, he used to walk around SF without an entourage. He invited me out, met up with him and Lars Ulrich that night. He was never skeezy at all and posed with anyone who asked him. He was super nice, all night. Just wanted to be left alone and have a good time. My good friend was a bartender at the club we were at, and Sean tipped about $300 on a $100 tab. So nice. Lars, on the other hand, was trying to score coke the whole time and hit on me and my friend. Sean actually gave us a wink and said to let him know if Lars got “handsy”. Acknowledge Sean’s a tool, but he is pretty charming, face to face.

  27. joan says:

All of a sudden commenters are liking and defending Penn. Hmmmmm . . .
Wonder what woodwork they creeped out of.

Up till now there’s been a consensus that he’s disgusting. Now he’s got all these fans.

Maybe his PR people took notice and hired some admirers.

  28. d b says:

Maybe it’s just me, but something about them together just rings false. I think they are both at an age and point in their careers where they need a little more exposure in order to stay current, and BAM they are “together.” I just don’t buy it

  29. Kosmos says:

Yep, a very odd coupling….don’t understand this.
