Candice Swanepoel makes an effort to put on weight before runway shows

wenn21275950

Here are some photos of Candice Swanepoel in London yesterday, promoting Victoria’s Secret with Adriana Lima. Candice, as you may know, is one of the rare Victoria’s Secret models who has never officially dated Leonardo DiCaprio. At least… not to my memory. But that’s not her only claim to fame: back in 2011, there was a lot of concern-trolling about Candice’s seemingly radical weight loss. She’s a slender model and always has been, but there were some photos where she looked especially skinny, and everyone was like “OMG, what happened?” Well, Candice has a new interview with The Telegraph, and she talks about how her metabolism is crazy (eye-roll) and she actually has to make an effort to put on weight before a Victoria’s Secret runway show:

Sitting opposite a glowing Candice Swanepoel at this morning’s press call where it was revealed that the next Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will be staged in London, the South African beauty opened up about how nerve-wracking she finds the annual lingerie extravaganza.

“I get so nervous, it’s terrible,” the 25-year-old told The Telegraph, explaining how stress takes its toll on her weight. “I get nervous about three weeks before the show. Last year I had to take a week off, because I get really nervous and all the muscle that I’ve built up I lose it really quickly if I get stressed out. So I took my trainer to Brazil where I can eat a lot of meat because I like to be a little bigger for the show, just to feel sexier and more womanly.”

Explains Candice: “I have a furious metabolism, especially when I travel so much. I can’t really do too much cardio or that sort of thing.”

The Victoria’s Secret Angels are known for posting pictures of their amped-up workouts in the run-up to the show to make sure they look their best, and it’s not difficult to appreciate the pressure they feel; the broadcast is watched by millions of viewers worldwide.

“It’s a big event for us. And you know you’re going to be wearing very little, and there’s going to be pictures all over the world the next day,” she adds.

The blonde says she has a sweet tooth: “I love cakes and ice cream but I’m not crazy – I like a little taste and then I’m fine,” and also loves Brazilian food, which is where her boyfriend Hermann Nicoli hails from and is the place she calls home alongside New York.

Ah, to have those kinds of problems. I almost always dislike when some beautiful model with a crazy body is all “Oh, I totally eat steak and potato chips and chocolate.” Mostly because it just seems like a lie. You know most of these women are smoking and dieting to keep the weight off before a big show. It feels like Candice is basically on The Zone Diet – she’s doing a lot of meat, and she likes sweet stuff but she’ll only take a bite or two. But really, all of this sounds like such horses—t.

First, slow clap to her for not ditching her pre-fame boyfriend to snag Leo for publicity (and I’m sure he tried).

Second, the only thing that bothers me is that she was with VS for a long time before she became an Angel and it’s upsetting that she became one after she had the drastic weight loss. She was always tiny by traditional standards.

Her bum is mostly through arching the hell out of her back though. I hope she has a good chiropractor when she retires.

    • KB says:

Wow, I wasn’t familiar with her before she was an angel. She looked fine before the weight loss. The site I found with before and after photos was some kind of thinsperation/ED thing. All of the comments were like “the [thigh] gap looks amazing!” I’m only 27 and I feel sad for the future.

    • Chicagogurl says:

I looked him up becuase am so used to seeing a majority of these girls, other than marissa miller of course, attached to unattractive or older billionaires.

Her man is hot! They must have supercrazyawesomesexyfuntimes or they should! http://cdn01.cdn.justjared.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/swanepoel-mates/candice-swanepoel-hermann-nicoli-miami-beach-08.jpg

    • Becky says:

Can any of you who have commented on how the doctor evaluated your metabolism please explain how this is done? I’m going to assume its an endocrinologist, right? Is there a test? Does he just look at your hormone levels?

      • Wiffie says:

I never was tested, per se, but know my metabolism is in high gear because at the dentist, I metabolize novacaine ridiculously fast, and the rate it wears off is tied to metabolism. They have to work fast on me or I feel it half way through. I’ve been in both sides-. Heavier (post eating disordered body, still recovering, in college boozing and eating), and extremely thin with no effort (medication, body finally regulated) and honestly, if you have poor body image, you’d have it with the body you wish you had, too. You THINK you’d feel like “hurrah, i’m too thin! Best problem ever!” But then you realize, it’s not any more fun than being slightly overweight. I hated dressing up because I felt like such a little girl when other women looked like WOMEN. I was flat and bony, and felt inadequate still, just like when I was too soft and lumpy. And it’s hard to eat when you aren’t hungry, but you have to or you lose lbs. Mouth breathing, chewing, gulping down, forcing it. No more fun then restricting.

  2. Stormsmama says:

She’s still young though. Her metabolism will change and by the time she’s 30 she’ll be busting her butt to stay in perfect shape. And there will be no sweets. And lean meats.

    • tinyfencer says:

You know, everyone always said that to me. Now I’m 35, have had three kids, and I still have to fight to keep weight on. Some people really do just naturally have a very fast metabolism. I eat like crazy just to make sure I don’t lose too much because I get self conscious about looking unhealthy.

Incidentally, when people imply that I must be starving myself to stay this slim it bothers me. Just like it would bother a heavier person if someone implied they did nothing but eat twinkies all day.

      • Macey says:

        This!
There is such a double standard when it comes to the heavy/slim debate.
Back when I did have a hard time keeping weight on there was a convenience store I used to go to all the time and the one cashier guy, who happen to be quite heavy, always addressed me as “slim”, like “s’up slim” or something like that whenever I walked in. I pretty much ignored it but just imagine if the situation was reversed and I walked in and addressed him as “Chubbs” or something similar. can you imagine the hate I would get for that? but somehow its okay to pick apart someone who really couldnt help how slim they were.

I had same issue up until I hit 40/41, metab is still good but not as zippity as before but I can still eat quite a bit without gaining compared to some of my friends.

      • janeFR says:

        This x2!!!
I have a fantastic metabolism (so says my doctor), made to survive famine and I’m getting weight above 800Kcal a day. On the contrary, one of my colleague has to desperately search for clothes in the 12 years old’s shelf.
We always joke about the unfairness of life. When we are eating together, people always assume that the big plate of fried everything with desserts is mine, while the lonely half Cucumber is hers. Wrong and sooooo infuriating.

      • Godwina says:

I’ve said it before, that thin-shaming isn’t really comparable to fat-shaming, since the world caters to thin people and we have all the privilege (one’s a grievance, the other’s outright oppression, as someone on the web somewhere put it recently–apples and oranges).

But body policing is body policing. I was a stick until my early/mid 30s, then I got a bit of ass and boob, but am still small. I have always eaten what I want to eat. So I *know* there are others like that out there. We get that a lot of models are starving themselves and lying about it, but my own experience tells me to give people the FUCKING BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, MAN, in the absence of any actual evidence, no matter how resentful you might be of that person’s lucky metabolism. Comments like those aren’t so good for women (and men) suffering from eating disorders, either. Not as bad as being fat-shamed, but not good.

      • Trillion says:

spot on Godwina. False equivalencies drive me up a wall.

      • Wren says:

I’m your twin Tinyfencer. Three kids, weight went back to where it was before I had them. I have been the same weight since I finished puberty and I have never dieted or restricted myself. I do chase after three sons but that’s it. I actually have been thin-shamed on many occasions and just wish people would STFU about the weight of a woman. I truly truly don’t notice the weight of my friends, or women I see in the street. It’s infuriating

      • KC says:

        Thank you.

Yes, we ectomorphs do actually exist. We’re not unicorns or scams.

    • Eva says:

Sounds like there already is lean meats and no (or very few) sweets.

If you look at photos from when she was young (i think 16/17) she was a fair bit heavier than now, so I highly doubt her metabolism is so fericious that she can’t do cardio.

I am actually a big fan of hers I think she’s gorgeous but it is annoying when celebrities spew out the same old lines over and over.

      • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Bingo! And there were pictures of her in a bathing suit looking anorexic a few years back, a little bit before that reprehensible Rosie Huntington Whitley jogging on the boardwalk in a bikini looking like a concentration camp victim photo. Why go to the extremes of starving yourself if you’re naturally a beanpole? Unfortunately the behavior doesn’t add up with the storyline. Sorry.

      • Lili says:

Some people gain weight in their teens due to puberty. It might make them look chubby but the weight usually spreads out more evenly on the body as they grow older. Maybe that’s what happened to her. Plus, people who already are skinny might look grossly so from some angles. Like, Taylor Swift sometimes looks like she’s dropped a few lbs very sudden, but I guess that’s just the angle the picture’s taken from.

Or maybe Candice’s one of those models always going on a new diet, constantly dropping a few lbs then re-gaining them or even more.

Hard to tell which one is true.

    • Dawn says:

I had no issues with my weight until I was in my early forties and then I packed on about 3 pounds a year until I hit about 130. And then I stayed there for a long time. So she could be telling us the truth there. All in all she is a very pretty girl and seems to have her life in order.

    • Artemis says:

      @stormsmama:

Eh debatable. My aunt had to go on a diet in her early 20s because she had my grandmother’s genes (my theory) and after her 2 children she actually could eat whatever she wanted and not gain one bit (my grandfather’s genes I suppose). Now that she’s older it’s her gut that gains the most weight but she’s still very slim.

      @eva:

Maybe she’s lost that teenager chubbiness? People’s bodies change a lot. I don’t understand her reasoning though, toning/weight training burns calories too! Any type of exercise will make your body burn calories even when you’re sitting still.

      • Stormsmama says:

        Artemis
That’s a good point. Actually my mom (late 60s now) has consistently lost weight as she’s aged. And I have found since I had a child I’ve had to work harder to maintain muscle and eat right but I don’t gain like I used to.
It’s also true that teens have the “baby fat” a lot of the time (not all) and they lose it as they become adults. I guess I was too flip about Candace bc she is tall and coltish and I can just see her actually gaining weight as she ages- not in a bad way. I just think she may be like Adrianna Lima. Who is perfect. But who has to work harder now to maintain her body than she had to 5 and 10 years ago.

To all the naturally thin people – you are right that it’s rude for someone to comment – “eat something” and “put some key on your bones” etc. I didn’t mean to minimize that.

    • KB says:

She didn’t have this “vicious metabolism” when she was 20, she only seems to have it now. My guess is metabolism has nothing to do with it!

  3. bettyrose says:

Is her caboose all padding if she’s so skinny? Serious question.

    • V4Real says:

There are slender women that have butts. For example check out these pics of Rachel Bilson. She’s slim but she has some junk in her trunk.

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2310056/Rachel-Bilson-slips-tiny-bikini-romantic-Barbados-holiday-Hayden-Christensen.html

      • Lindy says:

Oh, wow, I don’t even know who this actress is but her body is exactly like mine. I mean… if you photoshopped my head onto her body, my own mother probably would think it was me.

I sometimes feel like a freak, body-wise. Because my proportions are so skewed. Tiny on top and curvy on bottom. I am thin overall, and mostly wear size 2 on bottom, but the junk in my trunk looks just like Bilson’s does-even down to the slightly jiggly cottage cheese butt.

It actually makes me feel better about myself to see her walking around in a bikini. She looks great. I would never think twice if I saw her on the beach. I should probably just let go and be less self-critical.

One thing threads like this do for me is remind me that women come in all shapes and sizes with different metabolisms and different post-baby bodies and different self-perceptions. And that is such a good thing.

      • Rachel says:

That is an excellent point Lindy. We should all just let go and accept our bodies as they are. It’s great to lead a healthy lifestyle, but it’s not healthy to constantly pick apart our bodies. If only we could all feel comfortable in our own skin and not want to look like someone else.

      • V4Real says:

Well Lindy if that’s your body type, I have to say you look pretty damn good to me. I love Bilson’s body.

      • Isadora says:

Perhaps I’m blind, but I don’t see anything wrong/strange/disproportionate with Rachel Bilson’s body? She’s not even particularly bottom heavy to me. She’s only rather petite, so she doesn’t have mile long legs or stuff like that. Otherwise: everything looks perfectly fine!

      • Lindy says:

V4Real–I totally think she looks great. And I am getting to a point where I can be more confident myself. I am (this may be TMI) getting out of a long marriage in which my husband spent a lot of time telling me I was unattractive and dictating what clothes did or didn’t look acceptable on my “weird” “stubby” “out of proportion” body. So I think for me, there is kind of a shocking “aha” moment when I realize that there are just SO many ways to be beautiful. And that flaws are part of beauty. Rather than just the really particular ideas my husband tried to force me into.

      • V4Real says:

@Lindy here’s my armchair observation. I think your husband was just trying to be mean along with trying to break your spirit. What is a sure fire way to bring out insecurities in a woman but by attacking her looks. I’m sure he knows that there are plenty of men who would sweep you up at moments notice, therefore to deal with his own insecurities of thinking you might leave for somebody better he tried to break you down. I’m so glad you are getting out of a somewhat controlling marriage. Hold your head up high and when people tell you you’re beautiful take it as a “I know” but thanks for the compliment.

@Isadora. We didn’t say there was anything wrong with Rachel body. Lindy was wondering if Candance could have a butt if she was so skinny. I pointed out that some women can be skinny but have a fuller derriere. Rachel has a fantastic body IMO. She does have a bottom compared to some women her size with a more flatter booty.

      • Isadora says:

V4Real, I was referring to what Lindy wrote – that she has the same body as Rachel and feels “freakish” and with “skewed proportions”. As I don’t know her I can only comment on Rachel’s body and she has a great body – as you also pointed out. So I guess, yes, Lindy looks great too 🙂

And Lindy, good for you to be free again!!

    • Sarah says:

Probably padded underwear. I’m sure VS sells those. God I hate that store.

  4. Erinn says:

“So I took my trainer to Brazil where I can eat a lot of meat because I like to be a little bigger for the show”

So America has a meat shortage? Hahaha, I find this explanation hilarious.

  5. Jegede says:

I’m starting to think VS is a hex rather then a boon

Once upon a time I thought Candice was going to be the next big thing in modelling – blue chip campaigns, fashion week walks, many Vogue covers, sadly VS has sucked her out
I see her more times in underwear and swim wear than Kate Upton!
(Even Upton who people rag on appears more versatile)
She’s now just another panty model with some side projects

The only VS Angels with respectable fashion careers IMO are Doutzen and Karlie

Cara Delevigne baffles me as a model but there’s no denying she’s a success with recent campaigns with YSL, Chanel, Vogue Eyewear.
Perhaps she was smart in just walking for VS fashion shows rather then signing up to be an Angel

    • sisi says:

in the past only Naomi campbell, Gisele Bundchen and Karmen Kass were considered haute couture runway material during their VS -show careers I think.

      • Jegede says:

        True and its different now.
But I think VS girls like Doutzen Kroes, Joan Smalls and Karlie Kloss do have some haute coutre credibility as well as commerical appeal which shows it can be done.
(And Naomi Campbell like Helena Christensen was an occasional walker for VS, it was Tyra who was an Angel and their spokesperson/face)

    • Val says:

Yeah, though to be honest I have no idea what Karlie is doing at VS…. every time I see her I cringe at how thin she is. Fine for high fashion, but her hiplessness makes me uncomfortable, and it looks awful next to the fuller-hipped girls.

    • LAK says:

i’m surprised to see Doutzen and Karlie in the VS line up because they were respected editorial models for years before they got the VS contracts. like Naomi.

to me VS models are like the SI models ie good looking girls, but not fashion.

  6. blue marie says:

I’m more fascinated with the dude behind the door.

  7. Jude says:

You can’t please everyone – either they be honest and say that they exercise 3 hours a day 6 days a week and eat < 1000 kcal per day and people are automatically "Ahhhhhh eating disorder! She's setting a bad example for teenage girls!" or they lie and say they are naturally thin, have a crazy metabolism, hate exercise and eat potato chips all day long and it either placates those concerned or they get branded a liar and say they're hiding an eating disorder… I would say for Candace it's a combination of blessed genetics/metabolism and extremely hard work. She looks incredible and gets paid a lot to look that way.

    Props for never dating DiCaprio.

  8. minime says:

Oh God, she doesn’t sound that smart does she?

Anyway, I give her props for not being part of the big-faced-guy-model-dating-line.
I also partially believe in what she is saying. I know people with crazy metabolisms plus extreme reactions to stress, that make them loose all appetite. As I know people that are overweight although they have a very equilibrated eating and do a considerable amount of sports.

Now, my question is, why does she have to go to Brazil to eat meat? I love Brazilian food, it’s awesome! Still can’t I eat Brazilian food anywhere else that not in Brazil?

  9. maynot says:

“These women are smoking and dieting to keep the weight off”. True. Many are snorting, as well.

  10. loma says:

I know someone who has this exact problem and has to drink Ensure all the time to keep her weight up. She’s always stick thin but lacks muscle tone so when she does manage to gain a bit of weight, it just adds a thin squishy layer on her slender frame. It also doesn’t help that she’s a workaholic who constantly forgets to eat or drink water. She was hospitalized once for dehydration.

  11. I just don’t get why we’re asking models what they do to stay thin. Does anyone really care? I could diet for the next 5 years and my body still wouldn’t look like that so……

    • sisi says:

And models often talk in clichés anyway. They have to stay rather neutral personalities to keep appeal for a variety of brands. So most interviews are rather boring and samey.
Only a very select few get away with having stronger opinions, imo those are the super models.

    • Bridget says:

It’s a silly question, and they’re obligated to give the PC ‘I’m just naturally this thin, I try so hard to gain weight!’ answer. VS’s primary audience is young women (around that 15-25 range) and they need to present a wholesome. image – they’re not sex and drugsand rock and roll. They’re angels and fantasy and Love Pink. I’ve referenced this many times, but remember when Adriana Lima said how she actually gets ready for the VS show and people FREAKED out? No one cares that these women are unattainably thin, just that young women don’t know that they have to starve themselves because the good people at VS can’t be responsible for young women developing eating disorders.

  12. Maria says:

Her ass looks real to me (her thighs are proportioned properly to accommodate her rear, Kim K is a GREAT example of proportions gone wrong).

I feel no kind of way about her interview.

    Her body is amazing tho.

    • Dani2 says:

      Her body is banging, seriously.

    • INeedANap says:

Her butt is all in her arched back, I hope she gets into child’s pose after the red carpet to stretch that out.

And I am not sure what you mean by proportions gone wrong — ladies with a larger caboose tend to have larger thighs (not always true, but there you go). Kim K just has bad proportions because of her absolutely horrible butt implants.

      • Maria says:

        That’s exactly what I meant.

Her thighs match her behind (ita about the arched back) where as Kim ‘s thighs are way too small for her butt, you can tell her ass is fake.

  13. Micah says:

Look! It’s an angel blowing kisses, and welcoming us all to Panty Heaven.

  14. applapoom says:

Miranda Kerr 2.0. Obsessed with selfies and she will be dishing out smug motherhood advice in five years.

    • Kaylen says:

Her personality is not even on the same planet as Kerr. There’s a reason none of the other VS girls have ever liked Miranda. Candice is good mates with a few of them though, especially Heatherton and Rosie.

  15. Tania says:

She has a great curvy body for a high fashion model. That picture with the pink top looks like the 90’s ha.

  16. lawyerette says:

Sounds to me like this girl may have serious anxiety which can cause weight loss. So what if she does have a fast metabolism. It’s totally possible that she does. What if she were a plus size model and said she had a slow metabolism? Would that be worthy of an eye roll and murmurs of “eats too much” and “doesn’t exercise”? Her job is to look good in clothes and seems to me that she does pretty well at it. Either way, let’s all body shame her because she probably doesn’t eat, exercises too much and it makes us feel better about ourselves to ridicule her mental issues or her fitness/eating habits. Ready, set…go! (sarcasm)

    • KaitX says:

I agree on the anxiety issues. I’m not model slim by any means (actually trying to lose weight) but when I get very anxious I can’t sleep or eat at all. When it’s really bad and I do try to eat, my body completely rejects food. I had a really bad spell where I could barely eat (lived on dry crackers from week 2 which I had to force myself to eat) for nearly 3 weeks and I lots a TON of weight. So while I think most of the model weight talk is BS it can definately hard to keep on weight if you suffer from severe anxiety

  17. epiphany says:

She has a terrific figure, much more curvy than the average, built like a boy model. But I’m confused; she claims to have a “furious metabolism”, which I take to mean it’s very fast, yet she avoids eating fattening foods? If you burn calories so quickly, why wouldn’t you just eat whatever you want? Maybe I’m misunderstanding her.
And I wish Victoria’s Secret would quit making their models do that stupid blow a kiss pose – yeeeech!

    • Jay says:

Just because your metabolism is fast doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. Eating bad foods won’t make you fat, but it’ll make you unhealthy internally. Hence the term “skinny fat”

      • Lili says:

Good point. You can be thin and unhealthy. I used to be 90 lbs but had terrible food habits. A lot of trans fats, sugars and too much saturated fat. I also smoked. Neither of that is good for the insides of your body and this was proven by how I was constantly tired and moody. And I couldn’t run a mile. Yet everyone assumed that just because I was skinny, I worked out like a freak and ate only healthy foods. Yeah, right… I was a couch potato. Very unhealthy but thanks to my great metabolism I wasn’t fat as well.

  18. A:) old prude says:

I don’t think it’s fair at all to say anyone who says they are skinny even though they eat so much is a liar because some people are like that. It’s called NATURALLY SKINNY! I’m like that, I’m skinny and I never exercise and eat everything especially cakes, cookies and my favorite doughnuts. It’s so okay to call naturally skinny girls liar but dare someone makes a comment on someone ‘chubby’, it’s called fat shaming.

I don’t know whether she is naturally skinny or not but somehow making rude comments on actual or generally naturally skinny girls is okay and it shouldn’t be.

    • Brooke says:

Yeah! Thanks for this! :D. I’ve been “skinny shamed” my whole life – I just posted a comment about my experiences. I even had a waiter explain to me once (in a very apologetic tone) that the soup he was about to serve me “contained quite a lot of butter”. My attitude was “awesome, bring it on!”. Not what he expected. The stereotype when people see me is that I’m vegetarian, or eat salad and drink diet coke all day. Or that I smoke or take drugs. Couldn’t be further from the truth, and it really is hurtful. I acknowledge that I’m lucky, and I like my slender shape and shapely thighs/bum, but it’s hurtful all the same when people judge you as some stuck-up high-maintenance model bitch when you are just a laid back meat and potatoes gal.

      • Lili says:

        What a stupid waiter.

About the vegetarian thing… I think it’s kinda funny that people seem to assume all vegetarians are skinny, or that people who go veg do it only to get skinny. When I tell people I’m a vegetarian, they’re all like: “That’s why you’re so skinny, right?!”. But I was skinny before becoming a vegetarian. My change of diet had nothing to do with weight issues and now that I’m a vegetarian, I actually eat more than I did as a meat eater. I didn’t like meat so I ate very little. Bonus: I know many fat or chubby vegetarians. Unhealthy food comes as both meat and veggie dishes.

  19. Avilita says:

    I prefer Doutzen.

  20. Nene says:

I believe Candace is naturally slim/curvy with a rounded butt and slightly wide hips because she is pear shaped.
Am of same shape so believe me when I say it’s very easy to go from thin to slim to curvy without much effort. This is cos pears are slim on top and curvier down.
But due to her being a model she has to be slimmer than her natural weight.
Moreover she used to ballet dance which makes her flexible.
Man,she sure can contort her body.

    • LAK says:

She’s actually hourglass. Her shoulders and hips are the same stats (or very close) and she has a very tiny waist.

Most people assume one has to be short and bigger to have an hourglass, but tall skinny people can be hourglass, and she’s one of the more famous ones.

      • Jay says:

She’s definitely a pear. She’s very flat chested and all her weight goes to her legs. She just looks like an hour glass at this weight because she has such low body fat.

      • Isadora says:

My shoulders and hips are also nearly the same and I have a waist. So I might look a bit hourglassy from the front. I’m still a pear because if you don’t look at me from the front but from the side, then you’d see that I have no boobs at all and a huge butt. 😉

      • LAK says:

Jay/Isadora: Boobs, bottoms and height aren’t a factor in body shape. It’s the measurement of shoulders vs your hips and the ratio of that to the waist. It doesn’t change whatever weight you are at.

Hourglass definition: hip measurement and shoulders measurement are almost of equal size with a narrow defined waist.

Pear definition: hip measurement is greater than the bust measurement.

Candice’s stats are alleged to be 33-23-34 which is the very definition of an hourglass. You can see it even at this weight. And hourglasses tend to have thick legs and a butt which can be confusing when looking at someone like her because we are accustomed to seeing models with rectangle body shape which tends to scrawny limbs and no butt whatever their weight.

        http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/03/03/article-0-1BF78C1700000578-967_634x928.jpg

The best example of a pear is JLO whose alleged stats are: 34-26-38. Hips very noticeably wider than shoulders even without knowing their stats. Pear can be mistaken for hourglass and vice versa because they also tend to thick legs and a butt.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bodyshapes.svg

      • Isadora says:

My stats are app. 34 -26-40 (oh my god). So my butt/hips are bigger than JLo’s? Ugh… That’s a bit… discouraging. And it screams pear shape. On the other hand my shoulders still aren’t smaller than my hips. I just got naked in front of my mirror to confirm this lol. But it also seems that my breastcage is wider than JLo’s too because she has boobs and I don’t while having the same width.

But I agree with Candice being an hourglass – mostly because there are no pear shaped models. A pear’s hips are simply too wide to fit into couture fashion (and it would be quite difficult to still have a pear shape with hips under 34″).

      • Lili says:

But if you look at another Wikipedia page, they explain the hourglass type closer and it all comes down to the bust-waist-hip measurements:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_body_shape#Female_shapes

Seems like the shoulder-hip ratio is pretty similar between the pear and hourglass shape in your picture, but the waist of the hourglass is more defined and the boobs are bigger.

Do you know what’s interesting? A recently study revealed that the difference in people’s metabolisms is only minor. Those who believe they have a fast metabolism actually don’t. When they counted calories, it showed that they merely ate less than most people. Those who said they have slow metabolisms ate more.

    • Alexandria The Great says:

Ding ding ding! THIS all the way.

    • Happyhat says:

Oooooh, I watched a TV documentary that said the same thing.

In a mildly-related note, I read somewhere that smoking affects your metabolism to the tune of around 200 calories a day. So, when you quit smoking (as I’m trying to do), your metabolism slows down a tad and you stop burning around 200 calories a day. But, that’s only for a short period, before your body gets used to it and then carries on as before.

And yeah – ‘crazy fast’ metabolism might mean you burn a few hundred calories more than an average person. I guess that, on top of being very anxious and an ectomorph would mean you are on route to being a model!

    • Chris says:

I dunno. I’d be interested in reading that study if you have a link. What I do know is that I live with a man whom I watched chase 7 tacos with 4 beers one night. Then next morning he weighed himself and he actually lost three pounds from the day before. I would like to switch metabolisms with him.

      • Alexandria The Great says:

What I’ve noticed is that the “naturally skinny” people I’ve lived with typically eat one HUGE meal a day. Like, they’re practically starving all day because they don’t want to eat, are too busy to eat, and are generally just not that interested in food. But when they’d sit down to dinner, they’d eat huge portions, or a full meal with a sugary dessert. Then you have the ones who snack all day on chips and candy and never seemingly eat a full meal. Most of them are just eating far less calories than they think they are. So they go, “I can eat whatever I want and stay skinny.” And they CAN, because it’s how much they’re eating overall. It’s second-nature for them, so it’s “natural”. But that’s not to say that some people don’t have different builds (i.e. Ectomorphs) that make it easier for them to maintain a certain level of slimness.

      • “What I’ve noticed is that the “naturally skinny” people I’ve lived with typically eat one HUGE meal a day.”

Yup-same with my naturally-thin friends. They either eat one huge meal or two huge meals a day and that’s it. That way of eating essentially amounts to intermittent fasting. Also, my naturally-thin friends have a great sense of “being full” and generally their body tells them EXACTLY when to stop eating.

Conversely, my overweight friends tend to eat until they feel sick, complaining that their body doesn’t send the queue that they’re “full” when it should. I think there’s truth to that, more so than the metabolism stuff.

Myself, I just exercise like crazy and eat a lot of soup so I can drink beer like a pro and not gain weight. Sure, not the healthiest regimen, but it does keep me thin. And drunk.

      • sienna says:

Oh Kitten, my gf’s and I are exactly the same. Except its wine that I drink. Nothing like drinking your calories and then getting up in the morning and going for a punishing workout!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I do think people use the slow and fast metabolism thing loosely, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I had my resting metabolism measured once as part of a study, and it showed what I have known for a long time time. Most people can eat about 1500-1800 calories a day without exercising and maintain their weight. I can eat 1100. If I exercise, I can eat 1200-1300. Any more than that and I gain weight. So I tend to believe it.

      • Really? So do you eat 1100 a day? You must be starved 🙁

I feel like if I ate less than 1500 I would be a bone-rack, just because of how much I exercise.

Yeah I’m sure you’re right, determining weight loss/weight gain is probably like everything else in life-a combo of factors.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

No, they told me it wasn’t healthy and was counterproductive to eat only 1100 calories, so I exercise. When I’m trying to lose weight, I eat 1200-1300, which is most of the time. I try never to go above 1500 or will gain. I said it wrong before. Also hurts that I’m older. And I love to cook. It sort of sucks, but people have worse problems.

      • That’s really annoying though. How are we gonna eat pies together? 🙁

      • Isadora says:

        Oh, that’s though. 🙁

Have you ever had your thyroid checked? A lot of people have problems with their thyroid and therefore problems with weight – also those with “crazy metabolisms” are sometimes hyperthyroid (which would in Candice’s place also explain the nervousness)

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Don’t worry, Kitten, I take the occasional day off, which is why I will never have a thigh gap! 😉

I do take a small amount of Levothyroxine for my thyroid, Isadora, but it hasn’t made me able to eat more, darn it.

Hey, I had sweet parents, I’ve always had a roof over my head, I have a wonderful husband and good friends. I can’t complain. Well, actually, I can and I do, but it’s a little thing. I’m very lucky.

  22. Chris says:

I like that she credits her metabolism. I think often we ascribe thin people with being disciplined and driven, and people who are overweight as slovenly and lazy. I think genetics play a huge role in what one’s “natural resting point” weight is. It’s almost a relief to hear she doesn’t work out like crazy and starve herself. Because then the natural next thought is “if only I could be as disciplined as her, I’d have that body”. And I think that that leads to self-loathing. It’s kind of refreshing to just accept that although I should workout for my health and well-being, I’m never going to look like a Victoria’s Secret model–so I should stop beating myself up. That’s what annoys me about Gwennie, she’s all like “if you worked as hard as I do, you’d look like me”. No, sorry Gwennie, you were born on third base, but you think you hit a triple.

    • Isadora says:

I’m not sure. I feel it would be more honest if she could just say that she has this body because of genetics (yes), but also because she DOES work out a lot and eats very conscious. It’s her job to do that just like it’s other people’s job to work in an office or sell things to people etc. Or be a full-time mum. And I feel the healthy thing would be to accept just that and see at the same time that we normal people can’t possibly work out as much as her or take care of our nutrition the same way because we already have a normal job with other duties that is not “supermodel”. And that’s okay because us non-supermodels don’t need to look like that, we can look ourselves and still be happy – no self-loathing here.

But with this “my metabolism is just crazy” I feel kind of… lied to. As if all supermodels have just blessed (? or rather: very slim) genetics when so clearly a lot of them feel the same preassure as normal people to have another body type than what’s natural for them.

  23. cro-girl says:

Naturally there is a difference between two people saying they love something, like cake or food in general. I love to eat and I love potato chips but I’m 123 lbs and its not because I sit around eating potato chips all day. I work for that shit and I work hard so of course I’ll say I love chips because I don’t eat them or as much as my brain tells me to. Because if I could, I’d buy a bag of every chip in the world and dump them all over my bed and just roll around eating mouthfuls of them between naps.

    • Jaded says:

I’d bathe in potato chips if I could. I’d mainline them. I’d build a house made of chips. So I’ve gone cold turkey, haven’t had a chip in months but boy is that craving still there…I look wistfully at bags of chips in grocery stores then buy low-fat popcorn to fill the void. *SIGH*

    • minime says:

ahah I love the description of your chip-indulging fantasy…I substituted your chips by my dark chocolate doughnut and made it mine 😉 Although I already know that is really only fantasy, since every time I get high cravings I buy a box of them and can’t pass the two…still, in my fantasy I eat them all and it’s awesome 🙂

    • cro-girl says:

Haha, glad Im not the only one!!! Build a house of chips, too right!! Im never giving up chips though you’re nuts! I allow it once a week and that’s it. I’d probably cry if I sat there eating low fat popcorn out of a bag. Each mouthful would be accompanied by tears streaming down my cheeks.

    • Isadora says:

rofl at your potato chips fantasy! For me it would probably be sushi and I’d smell fishy for days afterwards lol

    • retromancer says:

This is me with chocolate. I’m 120lbs and I fucking love chocolate. I eat far more of it (and other assorted junk, and food in general) than most people believe (as in, I’ve had the ‘you must eat only rabbit food’ comments, the ‘I could never eat only salads like [retromancer]’ comments, the ‘oh, but do you really eat that much?’ questions; I’ve had people — my own grandparents, in fact — believe I’m bulimic) when in fact it’s just a matter of exercise and moderation.

I love food. I love chocolate. I love eating. Y’know what else I love? Exercise. Being fit. I don’t run 25 – 30 miles a week because I hate myself, I do it because I love my body and I love not believing I have to feel ‘guilty’ or ‘bad’ for anything I do eat that isn’t healthy, or for going over that ~~mystical~~ ~~magical~~ 1200 calories that magazines believe is the number that women who want to lose weight (or be slim, or trim, or whatever) ought to be consuming per day.

      • cro-girl says:

Retromancer – EXACTLY!!! Preach it! You said it better than I did!

      • retromancer says:

cro-girl: for sure, man! People seem to think that it’s a … black and white world, I guess. Like, either you love food or you love exercise, never both, and that’s just so totally BIZARRE.

      • cro-girl says:

Glad to have this little exchange with you! I thought I was the only one in the world! Haha. I bike 100km a week because I love it and because I love food. It’s not just boneless skinless chicken breasts and broccoli over here!

      • Bridget says:

Word. I’ve yet to meet a single runner that doesn’t also love food. My rules: eat real food. If there’s a treat, don’t indulge every single day. Wine only on the weekends (that’s my vice more than junk food). And my treats are the GOOD stuff. No Hersheys, no trick-or-treat candies – instead, gourmet s’mores and these absurd chocolate covered graham crackers with a sprinkle of sea salt. DELICIOUS and rich enough that you don’t feel the need to eat the whole package.

  24. FLORC says:

She looks like Rosie with the glasses and pink top.

And this is huge BS, of course.
Lots of the models are caught smoking. I’m sure laxatives play a role.
And wasn’t it adrianna’s big slip where she told us her pre show diet prep and then double backed saying none of that was true or even said?
2 weeks of heavy cardio and weights while only taking in 2 protein shakes a day is an easy way to dehydrate yourself. And no water 12 hours before the show. Not Healthy and Not natural.

OT a bit, but Smoking changes your body. You put on and store fat much more easily after you quit. Much the same as Coke.

    • We Are All Made of Stars says:

Oh, no, you mean models do some crazy things to maintain their underweight figures? NOOOO!!! You have ruined my fantasies of swanlike creatures hopping out of bed with talking bluebirds swirling around their heads as they sashay to the local buffet to take down a roast beef or two. I don’t know if I shall ever recover! 🙂

      • FLORC says:

More pointing out specific examples for a pool of women that almost all claim to have trouble keeping weight on.
This sounds like the Yale student with her issues keeping weight on.

  25. minime says:

sorry, wrong place. I wanted to answer somewhere else.

  26. TW says:

She lost me at, “…so I took my trainer to Brazil…”

  27. yelp says:

I have the exact same body type as Candice (“wide” hips, tiny waist and super skinny all over) and I can attest to the fact that there are plenty of women out there who have an easier time losing weight and much more difficult time gaining it.

  28. Jag says:

When I was in high school, our basketball coach had to drink protein shakes all day long or he’d lose weight. He was very tiny as it was. And my best friend for a while was literally skin and bones due to her metabolism, no matter what she ate. Having a super-fast metabolism wasn’t a good thing for either of them.

  29. Brooke says:

I believe her. I’m 33 and have been very tall and slim and model-like for as long as I can remember. Two pregnancies and right back in shape immediately. Can wear the same jeans I wore when I was 17. And I eat like a crazy person. I eat everything. Meat, potatoes, sweets, you name it. I love eating.
When I was younger people thought I was anorexic. Teachers would get concerned and ask if I wanted to “talk”. When they saw that I ate so much, they automatically assumed I was bulimic.
Um…no. This is just me. And people shouldn’t hate me. I know I’m lucky, but everyone tries to find my “secret”. I don’t use drugs. I do walk quite a bit, but nothing excessive. My metabolism is very fast – I have a huge breakfast and am hungry again by 11am. If my weight goes down, I become ravenous until it gets back up again, but my BMI never goes above 19.5 – ever. Once I’m “up there” again, I eat normally and whatever I want, and don’t gain more. I get told all the time I should be a model but don’t want to, no desire WHATSOEVER. But I believe her. There are lucky freaks in this world. Hate us all you want, but we exist.

    • Godwina says:

Amen. Benefit of the doubt, like I said upthread. It’s the secret to a civil society.

  30. Jessica says:

Someone please explain to me how excessive traveling boosts the metabolism.

  31. Liz says:

Thin women can have perky, large butts just as overweight women can have flat, hanging buts. It comes down to body type.

  32. Godwina says:

This might be a good place to leave this article about thin privilege:

    *drops link*

    http://everydayfeminism.com/2013/10/lets-talk-about-thin-privilege/

    *backs away slowly*

  33. Caroline says:

She’s young and tall, so I believe that. I’m 21, not as tall as her, and seriously never gains weight, eat whatever I want and always eat after midnight

  34. Lili says:

Being naturally thin might actually be a problem for some people. If you don’t like the way your body looks but you have a very fast metabolism, it can be frustrating. It seems like whatever you eat, it just doesn’t help you gain weight. And being insecure about a skinny body can be just as painful as the opposite, not to mention all the comments you get on how you should eat a hamburger, that you look like a teenage boy and NO MAN WILL EVER WANT YOU (yep, I’ve got that one). And the stupid questions, too! “Don’t your parents feed you?”, “Will you break if I touch you?” and “Do you tip over when it’s windy outside?”. Very tiresome.

I get that being thin is the norm, so some people leaving these comments are probably just jealous. I also get that it might make you feel even more crappy to be picked on for being fat, as that’s not even the norm and therefore the stigma’s greater. Hurtful comments are still hurtful comments, though, and bodily insecurities are exactly that: bodily insecurities. So if Candice is insecure about being thin, and really wants to gain weight, let her talk about that. I also don’t doubt her problem keeping weight. Some people are like that and she’s still pretty young, so her metabolism hasn’t slowed down yet. Maybe it will in her 30’s.

At last, I think it’s sad that thin celebrities always have to defend their thin bodies. Just like people are obsessed about whether fat celebrities exercise or not, they seem to be obsessed about whether thin celebrities eat or not. And then more “normal” girls like Jennifer Lawrence can totally get away with eating crap all the time, because they have that perfect body- not too thin and not too fat. Yet they might be the ones living most unhealthy. It’s all so stupid and blind…

    • Brooke says:

Absolutely. There is a lot of bullying of thin people too. I sure got it. “Are you anorexic?” “Eat this… it will put some meat on your bones” and “How’s the weather up there?” “(I’m also very tall). “men like curves, try to gain some weight”, etc. I suffered as a youngster, horribly, horribly, horribly – we are talking clinical depression here – but in all honesty, now that I’m older, hopefully wiser, and have come to terms (acceptance) of myself, I figure I’m pretty damn lucky and have just decided to enjoy my body, enjoy food, and enjoy life. I wish that all women, of all sizes, can feel the way I feel now, it’s probably the most freeing and beautiful gift to have this feeling. To just accept yourself, the way you are, and to make the most of your shape/life/personality. There are too many people running around jealous of other people or judging them. It needs to stop, it’s destroying so many female souls.

  35. Kelly says:

In my experience with naturally thin friends – they never eat as much as me.
Yes they eat whatever they want whenever they want to, but when you compare their daily amount of food intake to mine, the sheer quantity is always much lesser than us bigger folks.
I’m not saying they do it on purpose, they just can’t eat as much and easily get full.
For example, I can eat a whole pizza by myself, no problem, and I feel satiated, I don’t feel over-stuffed like I’m about to throw up. My thin friend can barely eat half a pizza before she’s screaming “I can’t have another bite, I’ll explode”….

  36. Sara says:

Models eat, and I believe they eat steak and chocolate and whatever. I mean, if you didn’t ever eat anything you would die pretty quickly. Do I think they eat like the average woman? Hell no. You can eat steak and chocolate and still eat a minimum of calories to keep yourself alive. Models do things like drink coffee for three days and then eat one normal steak meal, or eat one fruit rollup for each meal. Or starve all day and then eat some chocolate.
