Did Rob Kardashian go to rehab for depression & substance abuse?

Rob Kardashian

Rob Kardashian, sock mogul, is one of those people that I can’t help but feel sorry for even though it makes no sense. He’s the black sheep of the Klan. Instead of raking in the cash, Rob’s forced to supplement his sock empire with half-hearted hair growth supplement endorsements. We’ve heard plenty of times that Rob wants to get away from the family business. Kris Jenner reportedly calls him an embarrassment because (in her words) he’s “a fat slob.”

I’ve read numerous recent reports that Kris wanted to ship Rob off to “fat camp.” There are also rumors that Rob skipped his family’s recent Thailand trip because he didn’t want to be photographed shirtless. This is coming from a guy who has no problem telling everyone he cried over his shrinking p-nis. He also admitted to gaining 40 pounds in 2 months because of a bad breakup with Rita Ora. A new report in this week’s Star says Rob is very depressed and has checked into rehab. For depression and some mysterious substance-abuse issues. Hmm:

Rob Kardashian has been struggling with personal issues for several months, but finally, he could be getting some help: According to a new report in Star magazine, Kim Kardashian’s younger brother is currently being treated for depression at The Meadows trauma and addiction treatment center in Arizona.

The only son of the late Robert Kardashian and Kris Jenner, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star has packed on the pounds from weed, alcohol and prescription cough syrup, according to the new report.

“Rob has been checked into The Meadows for about a month for substance-abuse issues,” a source told the mag.

As Radar has reported, the struggling 27-year-old reality star recently reached out to his sister Khloe Kardashian’s ex, Lamar Odom.

Rob did not go on the family vacation to Thailand, and an insider previously told Radar he “has completely retreated from the family, and from his friends. But within the last few weeks, Rob has reconnected with Lamar.”

[From Radar Online]

Rob’s rep already denied the story to Life & Style. The rep says Rob is not in rehab and is spending all his time “working on his weight loss with his trainer Gunnar Peterson.” The thing is — we’ll probably never know if Rob is really in rehab or not. He never gets papped anymore! All of the photos in this post are several months old.

Rob recently tweeted and deleted his feelings: “No one will ever understand how much it hurts.” I can buy that he’s depressed, but why go to rehab for depression?

“I can buy that he’s depressed, but why go to rehab for depression?”

Rehabilitation: to restore or bring to a condition of health or useful and constructive activity.

    That’s why.
Just because the word has been misused and misapplied doesn’t mean the treatment is not what he needs.

I actually feel badly for the guy, he seems like a relatively normal bloke in the Land of Oddz, a superficial, delusional world of fake body parts, fake relationships and fake newsworthiness that would make Pollyanna depressed. I wish him well.

      + 1 – You’re right on the money.

    • Petee says:

Why would he not go?Can you imagine being the only male in that family? At least people will hear him and not put him down or expect him to be more then he is.He can’t make his Mom happy because she can’t make any money off of him and I am sure he feels like a complete failure because he is the only male and doesn’t live up to his Dads statues. He is the odd man out.Doesn’t surprise me at all if he has eating issues and substance abuse problems.

      • don't kill me i'm french says:

        Same idea

      • Miffy says:

+1, I’m only thinking about it now but I’m surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Poor guy.

As the only male in that family and being named after the man in question, he would have some expectation (of himself at least) to fill his dad’s shoes (wasn’t he toying with the idea of law school at one point?). Instead he’s the least marketable sibling of a family empire based on sex tapes and butt cheeks. But here, shill some socks, fatty! Kris Jenner is truly an amazing mother…

      • Carolyn says:

couldn’t have said it better. Disgraceful family.

    • Erinn says:

I’m kind of disgusted that the question was even asked!

Especially if he has substance abuse issues along with the depression, and unfortunately the two can go hand and hand quite often. I’ve struggled with depression since I was a teenager. It was not simply ‘teenaged hormones’ it was much more than that. and it’s something I still have to try and control…if rehab makes him feel better – and can help with the substance abuse – WHY WOULDN’T HE GO!?

    • homegrrrl says:

I agree, he’s the forgotten middle child, and seemed like a nice and sincere person. However, isn’t this “Rehab” thing kind of overblown? I guess I’m the sober granny here, but in my day (yes My DAy) we went broke and found a good therapy group that was free and had to integrate therapy into our average Joe lives. There was not time and money to “leave the world” and self-indulge, then come back in shock to find the world isn’t full of kind understanding therapy faces. It was called twelve step meetings, and they are everywhere, and they are free, and you drink old school coffee and learn to be a human in the human race. I’ve been sober and substance free for over fifteen years, and I’m lucky I had to do it the hard way, because it made me strong for the long haul. And I learned to like it!!

      • John says:

I think that’s wonderful, 12 Step programs and group can help a lot of people, but not everyone responds to that sort of “treatment”, it’s unfair to assume that what worked for you would work for everybody.
Alcohol and drugs are not required to live, food is, a self-governing, lay-person led “group” is often not appropriate for people with far deeper-seated issues.

    • TheCountess says:

      +1, well said.

    • Bridget says:

Yes, that’s the definition of the word rehabilitation, but you wouldn’t go to a Rehab to try to ‘rehab’ a bum knee, would you? Rehabs have a specific purpose. Most are specifically for addiction issues -alcohol, drugs, sex. If he’s seriously depressed and not in fact having subtance abuse, he would need to go to a facility that specialized in mental health issues.

  2. Kim1 says:

Another BS story from Star magazine.

  3. Sagal says:

Is that a real question? Depression is a serious mental health issue that needs to be addressed.

    • Badirene says:

Yep this, I have suffered lifelong clinical depression, people seem to think that I should “just cheer up”, the judgement is just too much.

      • Erinn says:

I hear you, girl. And the people that feel vaguely sad one day and claim they’re “sooooo depressed” that makes me feel punchy.

      • Skyblue says:

Ditto here. Several major depressive episodes and PTSD from witnessing a random act of violence in the workplace (perpetrated by a seriously mentally ill man). In retrospect I probably could have used in-patient treatment several times. The bottom line is you don’t just “cheer up”.

      • Miffy says:

Badirene, don’t worry, the people that say that will understand one day. Depression seems unavoidable nowadays.

I tried helping my best friend in college through some serious clinical depression and couldn’t understand why she couldn’t just will herself to be happy. Five years later I was punched in the face with my own diagnosis and wow, I understood. I understood very quickly.

    • Nina W says:

Depression is real, of course, but Rob seems to suffer from being the spoiled child of privilege with no direction in his life and no sense of self-worth. He needs to learn basic coping skills not be told he’s depressed and needs rehab. Rob is no different than legions of other young people, he needs to grow up and become an adult and not continue a lifetime pattern of childish behavior. Everybody goes through hard times, he is not unique, we all suffer and wallowing in self-pity is no way to go through life.

  4. Birdie says:

He should move away and start a new, real life, where he doesn’t have to compete with his slutty sisters. Get a real job, a real relationship and settle down or do whatever floats your boat.

  5. Froggy says:

The next time he’s seen, he will have dramatically lost a ton of weight and will be pimping whatever product/service he says made it happen for him.

    • watchmaker says:

Agreed! We will also hear how proud PMK is of her son for going to rehab, and how much Rob is loved and needed. And the only reason she called him a fat slob, etc… was an act of “tough love” so Rob would get help…

    • Size Does Matter says:

I could totally believe that Rob is depressed and/or has a substance abuse issue. I hope “rehab” in this case isn’t code for “recovering from bariatric surgery” and Rob is getting the help he needs to take control over his life and situation.

  6. SleepyJane says:

I thought a lot of the depression was coming from his supposed “secret son” (Nicole Richie called him out on twitter for being an absent father) that his mom won’t let him publicly acknowledge? So many rumors, so few cares I have to give.

    • MrsBPitt says:

The thing is…this is a grown man! Why would he let Kris tell him that he cannot acknowledge his son (if its true)? Kim and Kourtney both have children, without being married, so what would be the big deal for Rob? I actually found myself liking Rob, after a few weeks of being on Dancing with the Stars. I wish he would get his own life (didn’t he go to law school) and try to be a successful human being away from that she-devil mother of his…

      • SleepyJane says:

I agree. That’s why I’m not sure the story adds up. He probably has a kid, but his absence is his own doing.

      • Blannie says:

No, he didn’t go to law school. He said he was going, but never followed through.

      • Kara says:

I read on Blind Gossip that they’re keeping his new child very secret right now so they can use it as a storyline in their awful show. My God..what kind of family is this?

  7. Dawn says:

If any of this is true then I wish him well. If this is yet one more fake story put out by PMK just to stay in the news then I hope it backfires on her like many of the other stunts have in the past months. These people will do and say whatever it takes to sell pictures and stay in the news so I put nothing past any one them. They truly are that awful that they would use something as serious as depression to get ratings.

  8. Dani2 says:

He’s the only Kardashian I feel sorry for, I feel like he’s been in a bad place for a little while now and all that focus on his weight probably didn’t help either. I hope he gets the help he needs.

  9. Inlike says:

He had a breakup. Why does it have to be an illness? Depression? Why aren’t people allowed to just be SAD anymore?

Sadness and grief are normal feelings after losing someone you love.

    • John says:

This is exactly the problem, that “you’re just sad”, dismissive attitude toward clinical depression. Until *you* experience it, obviously you can’t possibly understand it.

      • TorontoE says:

Agreed. Big difference between sadness, which as you say can be healthy, and depression, which is destructive and overwhelming. Sometimes it is significant enough to warrant in patient care. If it’s true I feel badly for him that his suffering is so misunderstood by his family (and some ppl here)

    • Leah says:

The break up was 2 years ago though. And it wasn’t a long term relationship so i don’t buy that this was the sole reason for his depression and subsequent weight gain. I think his reaction to the break up with Ora showed a really bad side of him. He was incredibly mean to her and somewhat misogynistic. He later said he lied about her but needed to make her hate him so he wouldn’t take her back. It showed how selfish he is that he was willing to spread nasty rumours about her to push her away. That was right out of PMK book of public relations. That said i am sure its not easy being in that family so i hope he can get it together.

      • TheCountess says:

Disclaimer: I only am aware of this because of keeping E! on in the background at times.

As I recall, what precipitated the break-up was the behavior of his sisters in front of Ora’s family during an outing. Khloe, Kourtney and Kim were saying rude, obscene things in front of Ora’s parents specifically to be crude and get a rise out of them (I think they are somewhat religious?). I understand this happened a few years ago, but honestly, having that conduct filmed, and shown over and over, and having to live with and socialize with those girls almost non-stop in the name of the “family business” has to have some residual emotional impact – especially if he’s suppressing telling them off in the manner they deserve for acting like such low-class twatwaffles.

I’m no Kardashian fan by any means but if I had to pick one to put good faith belief in being a decent person at heart, it would be him. As others here have suggested, he needs to get away from the klan, live his own life, stay off camera and find some happiness.

      • anon33 says:

Disclaimer of embarassment: I watch the show.

That was the Cheetah girl’s (Adrienne) parents, NOT Rita Ora’s. That was several years ago…like 09-10.

My personal and completely unfounded opinion is that some serious sh8t went down when he lived with Khloe and Lamar…he said several times on the show that living there was a toxic situation for him. But no reason ever given.

      • Bridget says:

Disclaimer: I am very sad that I know anything about Rob Kardashian.

He and Rita Ora were together for like 2 months, and when they broke up he went on Twitter he claimed that she cheated on him with 19 guys and called her a wh#re.

He’s gross. He’s been content to live off of his sister’s fame and notoriety, and he’s not a particularly nice dude. Feel sorry for somone that deserves it, not a Kardashian.

  10. BeckyR says:

He needs to get busy: go to grad school, work with at risk children, anything other than waste his life on doing nothing, like the rest of his trash family. His weight, horrible looking tattoos and facial expressions are all cries for help. Sock designer? Please. What a joke. He has had more opportunities than the average guy yet has chosen to waste his life. I feel sorry for him, yet disgusted at the same time. Rob, grow up!!!

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      Yes!

    • Josephine says:

I totally agree. This is a guy born with every advantage in life, and he has chosen to do nothing. Even if he has struggled with depression, which I have as well, he needs to address it like an adult and get moving. Having such an empty, worthless existence cannot be helping. People have far more severe problems with far fewer resources – hope this stint in rehab, if it’s real, helps him get moving.

      • Nina W says:

Maybe I’m just a bitch but I am skeptical of his “depression”, it just seems like one more BS excuse from him so that he can keep acting like a spoiled child.

    • Meredith says:

exactly. Grad school somewhere away from the kardashians would be great. Maybe in Boston or NYC. He needs to define himself as a person and distance himself from their tomfoolery

  11. Sam says:

Sad as it is, many people are more willing to say they went to “rehab” than saying they are in a mental health facility. I am a mentally ill person, and trust me, the stigma is still very much alive. On some level, it’s easier to let people think you have a drug issue than a mental illness. It’s also worth noting that a very, very high percentage of mentally ill people self-medicate with just about everything on the planet. This story is easily believable to me. The worst part of it is that Rob is probably having to do it without any familal support, since his family would never admit that such serious issues could be present in their own home.

    • John says:

Mental health treatment is considered a form of rehabilitation, and addiction is very often a symptom of underlying mental health issues.
I hope you’re receiving the help you need, and I agree 100% that Rob is having to find his way without familial support, which is shameful.

  12. NewWester says:

Rob really needs to break off of contact with his family. His mother really only cares about one child ( Kim) and he needs to focus on his own family ( his son)Sometimes the only way a person can grow is to get away from “toxic people” which unfortunately in this case is his family.
If he is suffering from depression he does not need his business reported all over the social media and tabloids. It is a serious matter and he should not have certain people ( looking at you PMK) finding ways to exploit it.
That woman would do anything to bring attention to her show and family even if it means using her own children

  13. The Wizz says:

I’m interested in becoming a sock designer, but where would one start…?

  14. Damaris says:

I feel bad for Rob in the case where he is one of the only men, besides Bruce (but, that’s debatable, right?) in the Kardashian family. If he had a male mentor who could steer him the right direction and help him put up with his crazy family, it would help him a ton. I don’t feel bad on account of his connections. For crying out loud, he is Kim Kardashian’s brother, Rita Ora’s ex-boyfriend, Kanye West’s future brother-in-law, and Kris Jenner’s son. I’d tell him to take what he’s got and use it to his advantage. Rob is well-spoken, he’s attractive when he’s 40-lbs. lighter, and he is a college graduate. The average person doesn’t have those kind of connections for money, jobs, and general opportunities. I want to see him, 100%, become successful in his own right and stick it to his sisters, really. And I want him to do it on HIS OWN terms.

  15. pnichols says:

Depression is no joke. Hopefully he gets the help he needs to make him feel better.

  16. Heat says:

So, he’s supposedly in rehab for depression and substance abuse…but no one’s alarm bells are going off when he’s ‘reaching out’ to his sister’s crackie ex-husband? Ohhhh kaaaay.

  17. MediaMaven says:

Ugh, the men in that family don’t stand a chance. He should go to law school, become an entertainment lawyer…… His family alone would make him a rich man. I’m sure PMK would want 10% from that business, too……. And of course 10% would have to go to their Church of Sheraton. But still, there are a lot of potential legal shenanigans he could benefit from.

  18. Lucky says:

I happened to catch an episode of the Kardashian mess about 6 months ago or so and the family had gone to a therapist together. Poor Rob cried his eyes out in front of Lucifer’s homegirl and the 3 sisters. The only one who tried to comfort him was Khloe and it seemed half hearted at best. I know he’s got all these advantages but I feel sorry for him being with that lot

  19. chalkituptoluck says:

He lived with Khloe and Lamar. Lamar introduced him to drugs. He tried to break away by moving out but then he got depressed and was addicted. I feel bad for him. He is trying to get help so thats a start.

  20. support worker says:

If this is true, he has a concurrent disorder. He seems to be struggling with a mental health disorder (depression) and may have a substance abuse problem (as stated above). That is very serious and would absolutely require treatment. Imagine for those of you who have struggled with depression, suffering from a substance abuse problem as well. The struggle is real.
I hope this issue brings to light the seriousness of concurrent disorders. Regardless of if anyone believes this to be true or not, it is obvious this person is struggling with some kind of issue and it is not our place to judge.
Hope everyone has a great day!

  21. Debb says:

Like the rest of his family, he wants the easy way out to fame/fortune.
Why hasn’t he completed school? He doesn’t have to work, is not responsible for anything, and his skanky mother has the funds for him to complete his education. He compares himself to his father which is his first mistake – his father was a lawyer and completed his education.
This POS is just spoiled and lazy.

    • idk says:

He graduated from USC with a business degree. He wanted to go to Law School but still hasn’t.

  22. idk says:

If he really is in re-hab, the Kardashians will make it known. They love pr. Any kind of publicity is good publicity to them.

  23. Shiksa Goddess says:

I thought he had a secret lovechild in Miami or something. I just can’t keep the stories straight with this circus anymore. I do wish him the best though, depression/substance abuse is something that you don’t mess around with.

  24. idk says:

He’s been working on his weight loss for quite some time now. They showed a picture of him on TMZ a month or two ago and he looked like he hadn’t lost a pound. He has access to the best trainers, best food, best work out equipment. He really has no excuse. The only thing I can think of is that anti-depressants make some people gain weight. This may be the reason he’s having a hard time losing it. I know he wished he could make easy money like his sisters but unfortunately men have no value in that family and he’s going to have to WORK for his money like the rest of us. He had a head start in life because his dad left him a large inheritance. He should have started a business a long time ago or even went into business with his sisters and just been a silent partner. Those girls don’t do any of their work for their businesses anyways, they just put their name and face to it. I think his mom really neglected him and he was severely missing his father. Bruce has 2 biological sons he didn’t help raise or spend time with so how much time did Bruce spend with Rob?

  25. Jacqueline says:

Isn’t rehab for depression called… Therapy?

  26. Sol says:

I feel bad for Rob. I remembered an episode of their show on E! where he wanted to have his own place to live and Khloe forced him to stay with her and Lamar because “he made Lamar feel good” or something. I think he should go to therapy and stay away of his sisters for a while. That’s the only way he’s going to have a good life.
