Natalie Portman’s troubled ‘Jane Got a Gun’ pushed back to Feb. 2015 release

Last year, I was sort of obsessed with Natalie Portman’s attempt to produce her own starring vehicle, Jane Got A Gun. Portman signed on as a producer early on, and she hand-picked many of the people involved, like director Lynne Ramsey and costar Michael Fassbender. Then everything fell apart spectacularly. Ramsey pulled out on the first day of filming. Fassbender and Jude Law pulled out. Natalie begged several of her friends to take parts in the film and most of them refused. They had to get a new director, and his first order of business was shutting down the production. And to top it all off, there were reports that Natalie and her crack production team didn’t know what the hell they were doing, and that Natalie was throwing tantrums all over the place.

At the end of the day, Jane Got a Gun managed to complete their production. It was tentatively scheduled for an August release this year. But it got pushed back… until February 2015. Ouch.

The cinematic woes surrounding Jane Got A Gun have been an absolute nightmare, and it looks like things just got a little bit worse for the ailing Western production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been shifted from its preliminary launch window, thereby pushing the Natalie Portman-led project from its rather tentative August 29, 2014 release date, to February 20, 2015 instead.

In truth, this can’t be good for the movie, because even if it does end up seeing the light of day, February is a near-guaranteed death trap, meaning it will likely lose a bunch of money and end up forgotten by the year’s end. Unless it’s really good, of course, in which case it may stand a decent chance of at least proving that it was worth all of the trouble it took to get it made.

Undoubtedly, those troubles have been difficult to keep up with, so here’s a brief recap of what has happened to date: After Michael Fassbender dropped out back in March of last year, director Lynn Ramsay left on the first day of shooting. Joel Edgerton was already cast as another character, but jumped over to Fassbender’s part. Still with us? Thereafter Jude Law came in to take the role Edgerton had vacated, only to exit the film as well, because he only joined in order to work with Ramsay. Bradley Cooper was then brought in to replace him, but guess what? He left less than a month later and has since been replaced by Ewan McGreggor. Oh yeah, and then the producers sued Ramsay.

At the time of writing, however, the film stars Natalie Portman, Noah Emmerich, Ewan McGregor, and Joel Edgerton, with Gavin O’Connor in the director’s chair. It tells the story of Jane Hammond, a nice girl married to a gang leader (Emmerich). When Bill turns against his own gang, led by the unruly John Bishop (McGregor) and is severely injured, Jane decides to seek retribution.

[From We Got This Covered]

At some point, it’s just got to be so big of an embarrassment that everyone involved is like, “Hey, let’s just call this a write-off and never release this turd of a film, okay?” Which is sort of what the February release is all about. Natalie will give a few interviews in support of it, she might even walk a few red carpets, but she’s hoping we just ignore everything about it.

PS… you know what else got a February 2015 release date? Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Mortdecai. Considering Johnny’s last three films have been spectacular bombs, this is pretty much Hollywood’s version of the “freeze-out”. Can both Natalie and Depp come back from this? Of course. But it does seem like Hollywood is tired of both of them, right?

After I watched ‘Entourage’ I can’t help but thinking of how Ari Gold would deal the hot potato in a circumstance like this. He would probably sit Fassy and Natalie down saying ‘What the f-ck did you think you were doing?’ I AM YOUR MANAGERRRRRRRRR! YOU CONSULt WITH ME FIRST!!!!
LLOYD COME HERE!! *smashing the phone on his desk while jumping up and down the office* I NEED TO HARASS SOMEBODY TO CALM MYSELF DOWNNNNN!!!!
LLoyd: But ..but.. I’m family for you!
Ari: Yeahhhhhh you’re THE GAY SON I NEVER WANTED!!!

Now this I would watch! Has anyone bought this script yet? ‘Cuz I have a tenner burning a hole in my pocket.

You may have consideration in casting but I pick the director. I am leaning towards my Pomeranian.

    • PAgirl says:

      Ha! Spot on!!

  2. LAK says:

    February release date? Ouch indeed.

  3. JJ says:

Never liked her smug face, UGHRR, so overrated!

    • Etheldreda says:

Natalie is beautiful, but she always looks like she’s just smelled a broccoli fart.

  4. allons-y alonso says:

    meh

  5. Kali says:

I’m actually really disappointed for her. This sounded like a really interesting project that had a lot of potential and Lynne Ramsay is a fantastic director. While it could still turn out ok (ie watchable) all the production drama and Feb burial does not bode well.

  6. GMarchetti says:

    Poor Ewan…

And he’s also on Mortdecai, so… poor Ewan again.

    • Roo says:

      Exactly…

      • Lemonsorbet says:

Ewan has enough charisma, so he’ll not be too badly affected by these, right?

Depp and Portman has the same birthday. Weird synchronicity or conspiracy?

      • Isadora says:

In case of doubt: ALWAYS conspiracy. It’s so much more interesting.

And yes, Ewan can walk through box office bomb after box office bomb and he will still be great.

    • poppy says:

ITA but he’ll be ok. he is so much more likable than all of them. combined.

      • GMarchetti says:

He’s one of my favorite actors, but he simply can’t get a break, most people don’t know him. I was happy that he got cast for “August: Osage County”, I thought people would pay some attention to him, but no.

Anyway, although I can’t stand Natalie after her campaigning for “Black Swan”, I’ll watch “Jane” and also “Mortdecai” (I also can’t stand Gwyneth, but who can?).

  7. 'P'enny says:

February tends to be independent movie month in the UK – tends to be time when the blockbusters have quietened down and there is room for alternative films before half-term and easter. There was a rumour that even Hiddles was in discussion at one point.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

He was, then Capa came along. Then it fizzled. But if it served the purpose of keeping him away from this flea bitten fog of a film, I call that a dodged bullet.

    • Isadora says:

Never knew that and wow… that was close. Good for him.

  8. BangersandMash says:

I’m going to watch it for Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor!!
I don’t care what anybody says!!
Besides… how bad could it really be?

    • Kali says:

Edgerton is really reliably good in basically everything he does.

      • BangersandMash says:

        Correct!!!

He’s a talented and compelling actor!!! Now there, Natalie DID NOT go wrong!!

      • magpie says:

        and hot.

      • FLORC says:

You can have a good actor surrounded by a terrible script.
Remember Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, and Emma Thompson in Beautiful Creatures? 3 amazing actors. 1 terrible script.

And sadly, actors have been jumping off this sinking ship. It’s not unlikely Ewan of Joel won’t slip out later with scheduling conflict excuses.

  9. kimber says:

Ya she’s a pretentious fool alright.

  10. Adrien says:

I still have faith in Johnny. I still find his goofy roles amusing.

  11. OhDear says:

February? Ouch. That being said, I think it’s too early to say that “Hollywood is tired of her” just yet based on one (albeit highly publicized) supposed failure of a project.

  12. QQ says:

At this rate that movie is coming Nevebruary 32nd, 2045 lol

  13. Here or there says:

I can’t stand her and her wooden acting. I seriously hope she has egg on her face from this. Though I’m sad that Ewan McGregor is getting thrown under the bus in the process.

  14. Tig says:

Ewen is one of my all time favs- he’s game for just about anything! That being said, I think I’ll pass on “Filth”. Will prob see Mordecai at some point.

  15. GlimmerBunny says:

I’m not tired of her! I know everyone on this site hates her, but I love her acting and I think she’s the most beautiful woman in Hollywood (maybe tied with Angelina.)

Johnny Depp could take a long vacation without me missing him AT ALL. Saw “Transcendence” the other day and he was absolutely horrible in it.

    • raindrop says:

Agreed. I enjoy most of her roles, and I don’t find anything especially reprehensible about her. I’m not sure why she’s become such a divisive or disliked figure.

  16. Bridget says:

I wish we really knew what went on there – the Natalie flailing reports were pretty sexist (and I think that was actually a general consensus at the time). I could take or leave Portman, but it sounds like she got in over her head with her first jaunt in the producer’s seat. And they never really gave details on Ramsey’s exit, which was truly weird.

  17. Isadora says:

I’m not crazy about Natalie… she seems to be the kind of pretty girl that always had the best grades in school but is at the same time a totally uninteresting human being. However I kind of feel for her, a movie disaster on this scale is really bad. The whole thing is a joke before it even got a chance. And it’s so much of a press disaster, it’ actually interesting to watch and learn.
