The new trailer for ‘Godzilla’: is this film going to be an epic bomb?

godzilla3

You know what I never realized before today? That Ken Watanabe is part of the cast of the new Godzilla movie. I knew about Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Bryan Cranston, but I didn’t realize Ken was in it too. I LOVE KEN WATANABE. He is beautiful, talented and very cool. His participation in this film is intriguing. I mean, maybe he just did it for a paycheck (it happens) but I’d like to think that he (and Cranston, for that matter) believed in the project.

As for Godzilla… there’s a new trailer and we’re getting a better look at the Godzilla monster and the plot of the movie. It seems like Godzilla is a good dude in this version. Entertainment Weekly theorizes that the flying monster is Rodan and Godzilla is created/awakened (????) to fight Rodan. For those of you into the Godzilla films, I’m sure that will make sense. Anyway, here’s the new trailer:

I have a weird thing to confess: as I get older, I get more and more disturbed by the fictional representations of the destructions of cities. I was reminded of that when I was watching Man of Steel again the other day – I know directors want it to “look cool” and it’s supposed to be disturbing to see a city’s iconic buildings destroyed in a fictional universe, but the CGI sometimes looks too realistic and it makes me think of 9/11, the destruction of so many real cities in real time. It’s bad juju, is what I’m saying.

Now, all that being said, this Godzilla movie doesn’t look so bad. It actually looks a lot better than I was expecting. It comes out on May 16th.

Here’s a featurette for the film too:

I want to see it. Not that that matters.

    • mimif says:

I want to see it too, but I’m a secret Gojira stan. And ditto to Ken Watanabe. Yums.

    • doofus says:

certainly looks better than the one that had Broderick…that one BLEW.

and I like that they brought back the original Gojira ROAR.

      • Petee says:

So funny because I had posted on my Facebook yesterday the trailers that comic con.posted.I am hoping this movie is as good as it looks. Please let it be.The last Godzilla was horrible. And Kaiser I can see where you are coming from on the 911 comparison. They do seem to use it in a lot of movies these days.

    • QQ says:

Me Too! Nothing more delicious than Panicked Cranston

    • Spikey says:

YES! I can’t wait. *jumps up and down* However, I don’t care for the guys as much as you girls. We’re in it for the big, clumsy and misunderstood CGI monster. Wuaah, two weeks left! *jumps up and down*

      😉

  2. Clucky says:

It’s out next month and this is the first I’ve heard of it. I don’t think I’m their target audience though.

  3. mrspatrickbateman says:

Yeah, I’m excited to see it.

  4. blue marie says:

I’ll see it, not opening weekend but probably a couple of weeks later.
The destruction of cities only bothers me when it’s end of the world movies, I refuse to watch them, they are way too depressing.

    • mimif says:

Yeah me too, the apocalyptic movies haunt my psyche. I love Cormac McCarthy but watching the Road was too gut wrenching. However, Zombies Dinosaurs Giant Lizards Dragons and Aliens can destroy the whole world and I’m screaming in my popcorn erm mimosas!
Speaking of aliens, whatever happened to the sequel to District 9 or did I miss something there?

      • blue marie says:

The last I saw it was just a rumor, but they need to make it a reality.

      • doofus says:

gawd, I LOVED District 9. Sharlto Copley is my secret boyfriend. (I know, I know, I’ll have to fight many Celebitches for him…)

        I didn’t hear about a sequel…!

      • Mia4S says:

The District 9 sequel is still a possibility but the director is now doing a movie called “Chappie”, that had Sharlto Copley, Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver in it. Awesome.

Copley is actually playing the king in Maleficent.

      • mimif says:

        Oh @Mia, nice work!

      • mayamae says:

I like post apocalyptic movies, but The Road made me want to slash my wrists. A more bleak and hopeless movie I have never seen.

  5. Mia4S says:

LOL, nice title, I thought you’d lost your mind for a minute. It’s tracking for a $60 million opening weekend three weeks out. It’s going to be a big hit. If the human story is even OK it will be a massive hit.

  6. lunchcoma says:

I like a good monster movie every now and then, so I’ll probably go to see this. I doubt it will win an Oscar, but it looks entertaining.

  7. don't kill me i'm french says:

More i see about Godzilla ,less i want to pay to see it

  8. Lady D says:

I’m going to go see it. My drive-in is opening next weekend. Fingers crossed.

  9. The Original Mia says:

Can’t wait to see it. It’s going to make good money because those of us who remember Matthew Broderick’s stinker want to wipe that memory from our brains.

  10. Narak says:

Godzilla is awesome!!! I love him and can’t wait to see this movie. Too bad Mothra and the Twins aren’t in it- ha. Godzilla was just an innocent baby lizard when humans testedc nuclear bombs and turned him into what he is now. It’s sort of like Frankenstein, we created him.

  11. Green Is Good says:

    I’m in. Love “Gojira”!

  12. nantucket says:

I can’t wait to see it. It’s got a pretty good cast.

  13. JuneLou says:

I’m with you on being tired of wanton urban destruction. I usually enjoy action films, but it seems like every single one devolves into the same scenes of buildings and huge chunks of a city being casually obliterated. Seriously, all I can think about is how many people are being killed or seriously injured, the momentous clean-up and recovery, and the economic devastation of rebuilding. Not exactly a recipe for escapism! 911 and other disasters, both man-made and natural, have made it impossible to separate the action from the devastating aftermath.

I end up just tuning out the final third of these movies, every time.

  14. MonicaQ says:

Going to be there with bells and nuclear whistles on!

  15. lucy2 says:

I’m not a big fan of disaster movies for the same reason (plus Man of Steel was just all around terrible IMO), and thanks to my brother I grew up seeing every terrible monster movie ever made, so my first reaction at hearing about it was no thanks. But this…looks awesome.
I’ve been seeing trailers here and there for a while now, and it has a LOT of buzz on pretty minimal marketing.

  16. Oceansoul89 says:

I don’t go to theaters to watch movies anymore but I will make an exception for this movie! I love Godzilla movies. Not the awful Matthew Broderick one though…

  17. MadPoe says:

    This looks effin fantastic!

  18. Samantha25 says:

I think this movie will do well. When I first saw the commercials I wanted to see it. It looks more like a drama than a campy summer movie.

  19. Isabelle says:

This movie will be huge. Probably will be one of the most successful movies this year

  20. paul says:

    no thanks,hope it bombs

  21. Mabs says:

    I. Can’t. Wait. LOVE Gozirra. Love all creature features, and disaster flicks are my all-time favs. Always have been. And here’s why. Sure sure sure, I have three boys and destruction is pretty darn cool. Love the explosions, the mile-high tidal waves, you name it and I’m fascinated by it because after the disaster hammer has banged the apocalyptic gong, people come together. You want to see humanity at its best? Have Mother Nature wave her hand for a spell and people finally get it if only until after clean-up. There’s always hope and a commitment to ease the suffering of those around us. I may never see utopia but those immediate days after an emotional roller coaster ride can come pretty close even if it’s amid debris. lol

  22. Aly says:

I’m actually super excited for this. I love Godzilla but the Matthew Broderick version was awful. This looks great and has some pretty good actors, my dislike for Aaron Taylor Johnson and his mother aside…oops I meant wife!!

  23. Lux says:

I’m SO excited for this. It looks amazing!

  24. Dommeh Dearest says:

They’ve done excellent promotion work as far as teaser trailers and hype goes. I’m excited to see it!
