Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen in vintage at the 2014 Met Gala: ancient or classic?

wenn21320406

Vintage Olsen Twins! And by “vintage,” I mean they looked like 19th century ghosts who were haunting the 2014 Met Gala. Both Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen wore vintage gowns that they picked up at Lily et Cie in Beverly Hills. Ashley’s look is vintage Chanel, MK’s is vintage Ferre. Both looks are… good God. So ancient.

wenn21320414

Victoria Beckham wore her own Victoria Beckham design. She and David looked very matchy-matchy, and now I’m kicking myself for not putting these photos in the Gisele and Tom Brady post – both couples dress alike, they coordinate to sort of a funny level.

wenn21320089

Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel. Classic, pretty, boring.

wenn21320763

Monica Bellucci in Dolce & Gabbana. Because some days you just feel like, “F—k it, I’m going to wear a huge red lace cape.”

wenn21321887

We had some requests for Sandra Lee. For those of you who don’t know her, she’s a Food Network cook (not chef) who is also dating the governor of New York. She’s the “First Girlfriend.” She wore a custom Dara Lamb gown and OMG. THIS IS AWFUL.

The way VB stands when she poses makes me physically ache.
The amount of effort required to pose like that, and even after her doing it for years, it still looks stiff and forced.
It looks even worse from the back.

    • caty1313 says:

I couldn’t agree more! Every single pic of VB on the red carpet, for years now, she has that exact same pose and it’s really old, boring and tired looking.

    • zinjojo says:

Have you noticed that one aspect of VB’s very consistent pose is her ring exposure. More than any other celebrity that I’ve seen, she prominently gets whatever giant ring she’s wearing in the shot.

I like the dress and styling, but the pose itself is so forced and unnatural and it’s the one that she ALWAYS strikes.

      • Nina W says:

I don’t like the dress or the styling, it’s slightly bridal and accentuates her unnatural color.

    • lucy2 says:

She poses like she’s a fashion sketch.

  2. Tatjana says:

Victoria is among the best dressed, if not the best dressed.

    • lenje says:

      +100000!

I also think Anna Kendrick looks really lovely and I kinda like the Olsen twins’ dresses.

Monica Belluci looks hilarious to me, and Sandra Lee’s dress looks like… floating?

      • Decloo says:

I like the button Olsen dress but it should have been tailored to fir her snuggly. Also, it’s more of a winter look. It was pretty warm in NYC last night.

    • Ramona Q. says:

Yes, Victoria looks great, the best I’ve seen so far.

Anna K. looks like she’s going to a prom in 1995.

I still can’t get a handle on what the theme was, nor can I find the info anywhere.

      • Nina W says:

The theme was Charles James who was a fashion designer of beautiful gowns that were striking and architectural. To me his stuff seems slightly Victorian with lots of volume and fabric in many of his creations, as well as hoop skirts. I have only seen a couple of dresses any where near his work at this event. That ugly dress the cook is wearing is obviously Charles James inspired but James’ work was much more flattering and chic.

    • Tessy says:

Except the dress is ridiculously long and is wrapped around her feet on the floor. What’s wrong with being able to walk?

    • Godwina says:

      That dress is POW.

  3. Little M says:

I don’t know that Sandra Lee but she looks like popcorn!

Not really enjoying the fashion this year. What a waste of fine fabric…

    • Rachel says:

Cinderelly, Cinderelly. Night and day it’s Cinderelly…

Are her slippers glass? I can’t tell. I’m wondering if she actually said, “You know Cinderella’s ball gown? That’s what I want.”

    • elisa says:

I know, right? Sandra Lee’s gown is the only one that actually made me laugh out loud (amongst the sea of ugly dresses this year at the Met).

    • Sarah says:

      Sandra Lee… semi-homemade ballgown

  4. Nev says:

Mary Kate amazing….David YUM as usual.

  5. GiGi says:

Sandra Lee! Is she still on TV? Ugh. So much ugh.

And I love the Olsens, so I can’t shade… I like their dresses, but not for this event.

Does it seem to anyone else that so many women (and NPH) went with such heavy blush contouring – is this going to become a thing? I feel like everyone had dark smudges under their cheekbones a la Lohan at one of her court dates. It was weird for me.

    • Lindy79 says:

Yep, that and shiny faces. I saw a lot of that highlighter/bronzer on the red carpet.

I’m all for a fresh non pasty powdered face but some of them looked like they were about to combust.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

That dress is so Sandra Lee. Ugh. She sucks.

      • Willa says:

        Hahaaahaaa!

      • Natasha says:

I seriously can’t stop laughing when I look at her dress…My god!!!! How did her people let her walk out the door like that. They must really hate her. Although this dress is like a 4 year olds dream princess gown.

      • janie says:

Sandra Lee thinks she’s in Gone with the Wind? The Olsen’s look like their at a barn raising for Little House on the Prairie.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Based on her incredibly chic and sophisticated Tablescapes, I am completely shocked that she has such tacky taste in fashion. Just shocked, I tell you! 😉

    • Dara says:

Anyone notice in the last photo that Sandra has clear shoes on? Homegirl is channeling Cinderella.

  6. smee says:

Both Olsens are absolutely over-powered by the hugeness of those dresses. I do not understand the fit at.all.

Is it the Grandma version of “norm core”?

  7. Laura says:

That last lady looks like Cinderella!

    • deezee says:

Yes! Totally channelling Cinderella. And in the picture of her going up the stairs, you can see her “glass” slippers aka Lucite heels!

  8. Nicolette says:

*sigh* The Olsen twins…….don’t get me started. And Sandra Lee’s dress looks like most of her dishes, a fluffed up mess that still looks unappealing.

  9. Dani2 says:

I saw a twitter comment that said that the Olsen twins look like passengers of the Titanic, I laughed cuz it’s true 🙂

Sandra Lee’s look is a parody of itself. Bless her heart for thinking this was an honest-to-God good look.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      They do! Wth?

Oh, dear, Sandra Lee. No, honey. You don’t have to put every dress detail you ever wanted into the same dress. The Bo Peep poofs, the train, netting, satin. Ugh. Embarrassing.

    • SophiaJames says:

Hahaa! That is hilarious! They always wear giant clothes that they drown in.

  10. reddy says:

Talking about too much fabric. The Olsens are so petite and always smother themselves with heavy clothes. And Sandra Lee’s dress is a bridal gown straight out of Barbieland. In the last picture, it looks like she is about to fall up the stairs as her foot is standing on her dress. I guess she did not fall (or we would have heard about that) but I can”t help but thinking ‘nooooooooooo’ when I see someone stepping on their dress.

  11. Kiddo says:

I thought Sandra Lee was Kelly Pickler, and holy f*ck, that dress is Hi-larious. The Olsen twins could be cast convincingly in a horror flick with those coordinated impending doom and dread dresses. Monica Bellucci in the bride of Dracula dress.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

If you took the cape away and got rid of the necklace, I think Bellucci looks stunning.
But I just think she’s a beautiful, beautiful woman so I could be biased.

      • Kiddo says:

If you took away and changed the entire outfit into something else and focused on her face and body, she’s beautiful. She looks good in red, but that is one ugly lace pattern.

      • LoudVal says:

Monica still kills it. Sure, it’s a rather trying dress, but who the hell else could pull such a look off? Her hauteur owns that damn cape. She is a really really really hot vampire.

      • Cecilia says:

Monica Bellucci IS a Goddess. Gorgeous woman. Mary Kate O. needs to stop messing with her face & both Sisters need to give Grandma’s dresses back.

      • Nina W says:

It’s way too much lace, but I agree, she owns it. If the cape had been lined her figure would have popped. She’s an amazing beauty.

  12. eliza says:

Sandra Lee’s gown is as awful as her cooking.

I like Victoria and David. They look nice.

  13. QQ says:

Sandra Lee’s Dress Echoes Folding Flour Lumps …and a Mess

p.s: please tell me Ya’ll seen the “Kwanzaa cake” shitshow she made?!?

    • MonicaQ says:

Anthony Bourdain called it “Food Abortion”. I about died. Took some canned pie filling and dumped it on a cake. I expect that from college students but not someone with a TV show!

      • QQ says:

Hooowwwllllsssss At that comment from Anthony!!!

That thing was so All Bad Everything!! that gross ass frosting? OMG and them Candles!!!

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

        LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!

      • Lindy79 says:

I just watched the Kwanzaa Cake thing on YouTube…

        no words…

      • Dimebox says:

The Kwanzaa Katastrophe is the most entertaining thing she has done, although not in the way she hoped. Her favorite recipes always start with vodka or gin, so I imagine she was in the tank when she saluted Kwanzaa in her uniquely horrible way. (I believe she may have been similarly impaired when she helped design that truly awful dress.)

  14. mia girl says:

Sandra Lee got punked. There is no other explanation.

And for me, the Olsen Twins have officially made it into the scary Dead Ringers esque twins category. ~Shudders~

    • Jayna says:

I don’t think the twins even live in the same city and haven’t for years. I thought one lived in California and one in New York, but I could be wrong Maybe it was only for a brief time. They look awful, but usually do in their drowning in their clothes look.

Poor Sandra Lee. It’s a tragic look. Who told her that was a good idea?

    • AC says:

YES!! THIS!! Totally heading into creapyville. I don’t even mind the dresses that much, its the weird gaunt hollow matching stares on their faces! You can totally see they will be living together with 8 cats and matching cigarette holders when they are 90.

  15. MonicaQ says:

LMAO YAAAS SANDRA LEE! She kills me. She made a walnut burger once and my husband and brothers were so offended that I was actually crying laughing on the floor. And she was making a cocktail batch and said, “You can just eyeball it, 1 cup, 2 cups, 3 cups of Gin, whatever.” Like lady, there is a massive difference between 1 and 3 cups of Gin. My youngest brother calls her “The Struggle Cook”. AND SHE’S DRESSED LIKE A CLOUD I CAN’T.

  16. JudyK says:

Sandra Lee looks like she’s going to a costume party…most hideous thing I’ve ever seen–the epitome of no class and the old saying that money can’t buy class.

And the Olsen twins look like they are in the Jane Eyre era. How absurd. And how boring. And…fill in the blanks.

  17. Thnuggaboo says:

Sandra Lee looks like she has two popped containers of Jiffy Pop stuck on her hips.

  18. capepopsie says:

The woman in the silver nightmare!
That must be the ugliest gown on Earth!
Looks like some costume from a french Theatre.

The Olsen Twins are, as Always, so BORING.
How old are they, anyway. Always dress middleaged.

I like Becks, I Think she´s preparing a smile for later.

    • Nina W says:

They dress old aged, not even middle aged. The stuff they wear was popular before my grandmother was born and I’m 47.

  19. TheOriginalKitten says:

I like Posh but she always looks like she’s about to burst into tears.

    • Marie says:

Yes! Her style is great, but she looks so so so sad, I am wondering why nobody hugs her..

  20. Lucrezia says:

Sandra Lee’s dress appears to be inspired by those paper bootie things that you see on the tips of a rack of lamb, so I’m finding it incredibly amusing that she is a “cook” and the designer’s name is Lamb.

(What *are* those things actually called? I can barely boil 2 minute noodles, putting fancy shoes on a rack of lamb is way out of my league.)

  21. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

They remind me Homo Erectus from way back in archaeology.

  22. Ag says:

love drunk-a$$ sandra lee. she is such a train wreck.

  23. PunkyMomma says:

At first I thought Sandra Lee was Glenn Close, but Glenn is too smart to wear something like that or even attend the Met Gala. Then I realized Sandra Lee was wearing her uterus on the front of her dress.

  24. Liberty says:

Olsens: on brand, black tie appropriate for the Civil War, and no see-through mesh. B-

VIctoria and Anna: simplicity harmed no one, but points lost for his White TIe fail: B

Monica: economical: she can lose the cape and sleep in it afterwards: C

But: Barbie® Wonderland – Jewel Secrets for the win. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pJmysvbtqkM/USQS9xN3ZuI/AAAAAAAADQY/X3bSEzGzmVo/s1600/003.JPG

    • mia girl says:

“black tie appropriate for the Civil War”- ha!! That cracked me up.

  25. serena says:

I actually like MK and Ashley’s looks. They dressed good, it’s just that they always have the same hairstyle (which sucks bad) and make up. If only they’d did a curly-retro’ look and a good make -up they wouldn’t seem so ghostly..

    • megs283 says:

I LOVE their dresses! Would it work on anyone else…no! But I love their vision of old school glamour.

    • Sarah says:

Agreed! I like that they wear clothes that aren’t designed just to show off T&A. It’s different!

  26. Mrs.Darcy says:

Is the Olsen in Chanel the one with the buttons? If I had to pick I’d go for that one. I don’t know one Olsen from another, though I do think Victorian ghost Olsens is like the best Halloween costume idea ever.

Posh has gone dangerously raccoon eyed for a woman who looks so much like the tiny animal. Monica Bellucci is a magnificent vampire’s dream, why on earth didn’t Zac Posen dress her? And Sandra Lee is my new favourite person ever. I so wish I could’ve seen Wintour’s face when she laid eyes on her.

  27. Eleonor says:

I love those vintage gowns, but the Olsens are totally wrong for them they can’t pull them off, and it’s a pity.

  28. Georgia says:

I can’t help it but imo the Mary-Kate and Ashley look fabulous. I especially love how they look together. They really complete each others look.

  29. Ashley says:

Add me to the minority because I love that vintage Chanel (the one with the buttons right?). Yes, it’s very old timey but it’s a beautiful dress. At least it looks like a ball gown, even if that ball was attended by a widow circa 1836.

  30. Lau says:

Damn, Victoria Beckham looks miserable. I would love to feed her with some cupcakes.

  31. InVain says:

That Sandra Lee thing is so horrendous……SO HORRENDOUS. DID SHE THINK that looked good? Sandra – when you can’t see the entire thing in a mirror, maybe you need to rethink your decision. Seriously, have some self respect, you’re dating a GOVERNOR. She looks like a prom monster. THAT HAIR. I just can’t – there seriously aren’t words for that mess.

  32. BooBooLaRue says:

Even though they all look quite atrocious, I would still love to have an opportunity to go to a real gala event and dress to the nines. Crikey, I sound like Cinderella. . . shuffles back to fireplace to sweep. . .

  33. Malificent says:

The Olsen twins — same old mutka chic. Victoria Beckham — proving that you can be too rich and too thin. And Monica Bellucci is OWNING that Vampira look — she took the costume theme seriously and she’s rocking it!

  34. Longhorn says:

Sara Lee has to be the worst dressed of the evening – even worse than Lupita’s. She belongs at Disneyland not the met. And the olsen twins look like cake toppers.

  35. Ponderousponderer says:

The best part about the Sandra Lee debacle of a dress is that we will have this to cackle over forever. She cannot undo this, she will have to live with being the joke of this show forever. This is truly the gift that keeps on giving! Remember that Geena Davis photo of the bike shorts and bustle? That gets dragged out into the light every year for worst outfit lists, poor girl. Sandra probably was looped out of her acorn squash when she chose this, or her stylist must dislike her and punked her. No one in their rightest of minds would put this ensemble together, ever, and think it would pass. I can only imagine how drunk she had to be all night to handle the tittering behind palms about how ridonkulous she looked. She was in good company with the number of misses at this event, but she is the cherry bomb on top of this year’s sundae of disastrous uses of fabric!

  36. Abigail says:

I actually love, love Ashley’s dress. I think it is beautiful, dramatic and perfect for the theme. However, she is much too short and petite to wear it; the dress completely overwhelms her. I think this dress on one of the models, or someone like Diane Kruger or Lupita would have been amazing.

    • Lucky Charm says:

@ Abigail, when I read “she is much too short & petite to wear it”, I immediately got a picture in my head of Duchess Kate wearing this. The Duchess sure does love her buttons!

  37. pnichols says:

I think they look great. I like their dresses. I think its hard for them because they are sooo tiny. But usually I don’t like what they wear. I think they look pulled together.

  38. Helvetica says:

    LOVE Victoria Beckham’s dress.

  39. Joh says:

Sandra Lee looks like she is wearing a bad Charles James copy , which is all the rage I guess because of the Charles James Show at the Met, but it is nasty looking. And she is stepping on the dress on the stairs.

  40. ernie says:

The Olsens were my favorite. It’s their signature bizarre and dramatic interpretation of the theme. It actually looks like they’ve given the dress code a thought and had their own twisted fun with it. I love it.

  41. Lunch Money says:

The Olsen twins remind me of the twins in the Shining. They have two facial expressions, gloom & doom or deer in headlights. And what is with always facing each other? Are they conjoined?

It’s bad enough they wear clothes that don’t compliment their body type/size but can they at least get them tailored so they don’t look like they’re playing dress up in granny’s clothes??? Everything is so big and they are so covered up all the time. I don’t need ta-ta’s or a navel in my face but this isn’t the Victorian era…they are grown women, it’s ok to show a little skin, arms, legs, how about a wrist? Something about those two is creepy to me.

  42. Pumpkin Pie says:

Victoria’s dress is my favorite dress of the evening. I absolutely love it.
The Olsen twins are so petite, I don’t understand why they wear those huge dresses.

  43. snowflake says:

i love victoria beckham’s dress. classy, elegant and sophisticated

  44. lucy2 says:

19th century ghosts, hahaha. Anna and Victoria both look nice.

Sandra Lee is wearing the Cinderella gown of my dreams…when I was 5.

  45. Ol' Miss says:

VB looks a bit manly…what’s that all about??

  46. Green Is Good says:

I can’t take the Olsen Trolls seriously. They always look like 10 year-olds playing dress-up.

  47. Megan says:

Dear Lord, the Olsen girls need to stop jacking with their faces… They could give the Kardashian’s a run for their money

  48. whyamireadingthis says:

If Katie Holmes is Belle, Sandra Lee is Cinderelly.

  49. Cloud&feather says:

Monica’s dress reminds me of a super fancy devil costume. Just needs horns and a pitch fork.

  50. Kristi says:

Um…Victoria Beckham’s face? The dress is fab but I’ve never seen her fillers done so poorly.

  51. melain says:

Those Olsen twins seem so odd. I think those dresses make them look like two cantankerous old ladies…appropriately dressed for their age.

  52. Nina W says:

I like both the Olsen twins gowns but the boob buttons are too low on the button gown. I don’t know if that is the design or a bad fit. Otherwise both gowns are consistent with the twins aesthetic and appropriate for the event and the Charles James theme. I usually don’t like their fashion choices but I think this is a win for them.

  53. Brit brit says:

I actually…. Like Ashley Olsen’s gown. Can’t believe those words are in front of me.

  54. Norman says:

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen always look like they are communicating telepathically with each other when they are together. Anna Kendrick looks absolutely beautiful, her dress, her hair, everything.

  55. Maritza says:

I like that Mary Kate and Ashley always dress so conservative but it would be nice to see them in something colorful and more youthful. Ana Kendricks and Victoria Beckham look very elegant and pretty.

  56. Abby says:

I actually LOVE the olsen twins outfits. Also VB. ALso Anna Kendrick. Even Monica Belucci. Definitely not that last lady. She looks like Cinderella and not in a good way.

  57. Vilodemeanus says:

The Olsen twins, it’s like seeing Norma Desmond doubled. No matter what dress they wear, they are so tiny the gowns have to be cut down to nothing, and the dresses still wear them, rather than the twins wearing the dresses. This will never change. As for Sandra Lee, not many women could pull off two giant white balls on the front of a gown. The designer obviously hated her. Monica Belluci so gorgeous, it doesn’t matter that she wore Dracula’s formal cape to the Met Gala. I love Victoria Beckham’s clothing, and she looks gorgeous in her designs. Katie Holmes obviously met with Harvey Weinstien for a job and ended up wearing a horrible Marchessa gown instead. Who looks good in mustard ruffles? It’s not possible.

I think the giant white balls, win hands down for most confusing and terrifying gown of the event.
