Julia Roberts on George Clooney’s engagement: ‘It is sublime…he is happy’

Julia Roberts appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday to talk about The Normal Heart… probably. But as with everything about Julia, it’s always about Julia. That’s sort of what irritates me about Ryan Murphy’s decision to cast Julia in The Normal Heart: it’s an award-winning play about a very serious issue (the beginning of the AIDS crisis) and now people are just going to talk about The Julia Show.

So, Ellen just had to ask Julia about her friend George Clooney. I think most women would have preferred that George and Julia ride off into the sunset together, and I sometimes get the feeling that Julia kind of thought that too. I mean, Julia never buddies up to George’s girls, probably in Julia’s mind, every man is all about Julia. Anyway, when asked about George’s engagement, Julia said: “I think it is sublime. She is beautiful and smart, and he is happy and that’s what matters to me.” I’m including the video (and an extra video of Julia talking about tattoos).

Does she sound sincere? I’ll be nice and say that Julia probably doesn’t give a crap about his engagement in the larger sense. Since it’s not about her, she doesn’t care.

Oh, and speaking of George’s friends, Matt Damon was also asked about Clooney’s engagement. Matty D said: “I’m just thrilled that he met Amal and that they’re that…they’re as happy as they are. He deserves it.” Matty was also asked if George would make a good father and he said: “You gotta ask him that one. I don’t know.” HA.

I dunno, as I’ve never seen the play, but every article I’ve read about The Normal Heart focuses on the issue and not the actors. Julia doesn’t bother me that much, she can act when she wants to.

But yeah, she doesn’t give a fat rat’s ass about Clooney’s engagement.

I’m starting to feel like a Julia Roberts apologist, which I’m not, but why should she be a spokesperson for George’s engagement? I get the impression that she and George are work buddies, instead of intimate friends in every day life. If she never met Amal, what is she supposed to say?

      • blue marie says:

You’re right, she really shouldn’t have been asked.

      • Kiddo says:

Plus, if there is any hidden agenda, and they (she and George) are friends, and she knows about it, then responding to that question might be awkward for her. I thought she handled herself pretty well on it.

      • serena says:

agree, I think they aren’t that much friends. Also she CAN act, unlike dozen of actresses and actors nowadays.

      • Chris says:

Yes. This. Also, I can’t stand the question “What’s it like to work with so and so?” I find it so rude. Especially when interviewing a “lesser star”. “Hi B- actor, thanks for taking the time to talk with me. Now let’s talk about the A list actor I really wish I was interviewing”.

      • Esmom says:

Chris, yes, exactly. In a similar vein, E! is horrible when they do red carpet interviews – – they’ll immediately cut away from someone if someone better shows up, or put them in the small box vs. full screen. Nice.

  2. Hannah says:

I hate it when people call someone they’ve never met “lovely”. How do you know she’s lovely? Because she’s pretty?

  3. CariBean says:

I don’t get the hate or dislike or whatever for her. I watched that show and I thought it was one of the funnier Ellen shows I’ve seen in a long time. I like her.

    • RobN says:

She puts on a hell of a show for people she likes or needs and treats people she doesn’t need like crap. She can throw a bitch face like nobody I’ve ever seen. I think that people just generally sense that she is not a nice person.

      • Jag says:

Not just “sense,” but have seen. Look at what she did to the wife of the man she had her affair with – oh, isn’t he her husband now? And many other things that show the cracks in her “America’s Sweetheart” facade.

The only nice thing I have to say about her is that I love her eye color, and I have liked various roles that she has done. But I would never go see a movie just because she’s in it.

  4. Esmom says:

I never thought Julia and George were destined to be together, but I always thought she might be gunning for Brad Pitt. I remember around the time of BP and JA’s wedding that something sketchy was going on with Julia, like she was not welcome at the wedding or something?

    • Renee says:

What do you remember??? I am DYING to know!! I seem to recall her saying something bitchy around the time that his engagement was announced to Angelina Jolie, but this is the first that I’ve heard of her not being welcome at his first wedding.

      • Esmom says:

What I vaguely remember, from back in the Dark Ages before CB and other gossip sites, was that she chased him big time on the set of one of their movies, and was stalker-ish to the point where he had to just shut her down when it came to his wedding. I’ll have to dig around to see if I can find anything to substantiate this…but I swear I didn’t pull this out of thin air because it always stuck with me as something mysterious and juicy.

      • Decloo says:

Esmom, I think the movie was “The Mexican.”

  5. frisbeejada says:

There are a lot of people coming forward – family, H/W ‘friends’ (publicists) and colleagues to convince us all how genuine, real and absolutely bloody marvellous Clooney’s engagement is while to me it gets less convincing by the hour. Why are they trying so hard…

  6. Merritt says:

I don’t get why it is a big deal that Julia never became friends with his ex-girlfriends. After seeing him go from one to another for years, it probably seemed like it would be wasted effort to befriend someone who wouldn’t be around for awhile.

  7. Sagal says:

I like her. She’s always an entertaining interview.

  8. Miss M says:

Am I the only one who remembers that during the Ocean movies, she gave an interview at George’s house and joked that he would get married?! She also said the woman would probably think she won the lottery by marrying him, but she didn’t and ended the comment with a huge laugh, hahaha. George was all embarrassed.

    Quite funny.

    • kiki says:

I remember that interview. She not only sarcastically said that the girl will think she’s won the lottery, then paused and said something like “poor girl”. George looked at a loss for words, even a little hurt. JR knows him too well.

  9. Racer says:

Dont drink the Kool Aid Julia!

  10. Francesca says:

This just gets weirder and weirder. He seems desperate and uncool now.

  11. serena says:

I don’t get all the Julia hate, I watched the segment on the Ellen show and she did seem happy and hilarious, not a mean b** always wanting attention.
Anyway I think she didn’t befriend George’s exes because she knew (as we did) they wouldn’t have lasted. Who knows with this one?

  12. Natasha says:

I think the writer is biased. She is happy for her friend. I don’t find her anymore self involved than an other actress. I like her

  13. rudy says:

Was the story of Julia’s “speech” at her sister;s “funeral” covered here?

Disgusting if it is true. Once again. all about Julia.

  14. Becky1 says:

I like her with that shade of blonde hair-she looks really pretty. Nice highlights.

  15. Bianca says:

Looks like she’s trying to ignore her sister’s death. On those facts it seems that she is really a bitch. She alredy ruin a marriage just to get what she wanted it, the family of her husband hates her…some text thats worth to read:

“Well, what was she like?” I asked him afterwards.

“A snake,” he replied. There’s always been something somewhat disconcerting about Roberts to me. Anyone with a smile that big, who seems that hell-bent on pushing herself as the sweetest, nicest thing ever, I mean, she couldn’t really be that sweet, now could she?

Meanwhile, her personal life seemed to suggest she wasn’t as much of a peach as she liked to pretend. She left a series of famous men in her wake — Kiefer Sutherland, Lyle Lovett, Benjamin Bratt — before ending up with Danny Moder, with whom she now has three children. One couldn’t help but wonder if the lady was a bit of a man-eater. Eventually, she did tackle more serious movie roles, some better, some not — “Erin Brockovich,” for example, and later the “Ocean’s” movies — but she seemed most comfortable playing the girl all the girls wanted to be friends with and all the guys wanted to sleep with — think: “Notting Hill” or “Runaway Bride.”

Nowadays, though, if you Google “i hate julia roberts,” you get 676,000 returns. “Eat Pray Love” is getting trounced by the critics, so far scoring an abysmal 29 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. While most of the critics loathed the movie and far fewer decry Roberts’ performance, one critic noted of her role in the book-turned-movie: “The film is a fairly faithful transcription of events, even though Liz, as played by Roberts, carries a faint air of entitlement.”

And that’s what you see in more than a few of those Google returns, that there’s something off about how Roberts comes across, that same something that led to my lack of surprise when my writer-friend described her as a snake in the grass. In that meeting with reporters, he went on to tell me, she was rude, ready to pounce on anyone who crossed her, eying the people around her like a queen eyes her subjects.

Colleagues have said that it is difficult to work with her, guess why???? Anyway…hope her movie sucks..and like Cate Blanchett told: Julia Suck It!
