Cannes Fashion: Amber Heard in sloppy Vionnet, plus assorted models

Amber Heard

Amber Heard popped up in Cannes for the premiere of Two Days, One Night. She wsa dateless. No worries. Johnny Depp is busy filming his Whitey Bulger biopic. Amber usually kills it on the red carpet, but she strayed from her usual routine by wearing an odd Vionnet ensemble. This t-shirt and sparkly gold maxi-skirt did not suit the glamorous film festival vibe at all. Amber looks sloppy, which is a shame. She’s usually the put-together one next to Johnny, but this look is a big “no.” Amber is gorgeous, and her hair and makeup look great, but overall it’s a dreadful mess.

In Amber’s defense, she has been a busy girl. She’s seemed so somber in NYC, but she sauced it up with some airport PDA with Johnny. Then the two of them surfaced at a Boston bookshop (they love their rare books) before Johnny was papped in a bald cap. Amber must find a bald Johnny to be very sexy because she made out with him on set before flying to Cannes.

Petra Nemcova enjoyed herself a lot in this Zuhair Murad ball gown. Petra loved this dress and let everyone know it. It was somewhat too embellished and princessy for a movie premiere, but she had a ball. It’s hard to dislike this dress even if it is a bit too precious.

Alessandra Ambrosio worked it hard in an Atelier Versace dress with asymmetrical details. There was way too much fussiness to this dress, which featured Swarovski crystals, fringe, a see-thru sleeve with embellishments, and an opposing thigh-high slit. Overkill.

Selita Ebanks went for an intricate Gabriela Cadena gown with 30,000 hand-sewn bugal beads on the bodice. This dress dripped with detail, but it would have been fine … if Selita didn’t look so uncomfortable.

Eva Herzigova was my favorite pick of the bunch. This is a strapless Dolce & Gabbana dress that manages to surpass its drab grey base color. Eva wears the look with style and carries off the bright floral embroidery well. She looks so pretty!

Eva is gorgeous and she’s a real not like all the VS girls who always look like try hard

    • Rice says:

      Absolutely! Her dress looks magical.

Everytime I see/hear about Petra Nemcova, I remember her horrible ordeal during that huge tidal wave in Thailand all those years ago. Glad to see she’s recovered.

  2. don't kill me i'm french says:

No for everyone except eva herzigova

    Amber is just wrong here

  3. Jegede says:

    Why is Amber there?

She does not have a film.
But does she represent a fashion house or fragrance or something??

    • Calcifer says:

She was invited by the company who sponsored this particular film premiere, De Grisogono, a Swiss jewellery company. She is promoting the company’s jewellery by wearing it on the red carpet, getting exposure and maybe money or presents in return. There also was a dinner party sponsored by De Grisogono that same day, to which many celebrities showed up (also paid probably). It’s seems to be one big commercial and maybe the films aren’t even that important in the end.

      • kri says:

Amber looks like she rolled out of bed and wrapped a cheap piece of lame around the T-shirt she was sleeping in. Go back to bed, Amber. Love the Cadena gown.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

    Love the D & G!

  5. Dani2 says:

    Eva H looks amazing here.
And Amber is obviously very pretty, but so forgettable in terms of her looks, she could’ve been any other model, nothing about her stands out to me. The look was a bad call on her stylists part, I can’t believe someone was paid to dress her like this, but then again, Kimmy K was a stylist before the sex tape, so it’s not that hard to believe I guess.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Kim K was a stylist? Seriously?

That bookstore is right across from my office. If I had known they’d be there I would have gone over there to make fun of them.

I feel like they were trying to do a punk-y/free-spirited/hippy-glam look on Amber but it just fell flat. She is generically pretty.

  6. blue marie says:

I don’t really like any of them. I was fine with Amber’s top and then saw the bottom and no, no good.

  7. Esti says:

Every time I see a picture of Amber Heard I think “THAT’S what she looks like?” I swear, it feels like there are a dozen different women showing up places claiming to be her.

  8. pru says:

Amber’s makeup looks good. That’s the only good thing l I can say about her.
Eva’s dress is the only one I like. It’s so pretty!

  9. Calcifer says:

Amber was a guest at the premiere and wore De Grisogono jewelery. Later that night she attended the Grisogono dinner party, where she was photographed with Cara Delevigne.
Can anybody explain to me how these deals work? Was Heard invited to the film premiere and subsequently approached by De Grisogono to wear their jewellery on the red carpet (and maybe also paid for that?)? I’m really curious to know…

    • whatsmyname? says:

I think it’s usually the company that invites the stars to the premiers and in return they wear their jewlery and get paid, they are the guest of that company. But I might be mistaken I remember reading something like this somewhere.

      • Calcifer says:

@ whatsmyname Thank you for your answer. So I guess this appearance of Amber Heard would count as a ‘paid appearance’. I am amazed at all the possibilities (besides making movies) for earning money that become available to an actress once she has somehow managed to distinguish herself from her lesser known colleagues.

      • whatsmyname? says:

De Grisogono also threw a party after the premiere which Amber attended and which im guessing was a part of the deal.
I wish I could get paid or get to keep jelwery simply by having my picture taken with it..
They can earn tons of money or clothes/jewlery by just showing up to places it’s amazing.

      • Calcifer says:

@whatsmyname ‘I wish I could get paid or get to keep jelwery simply by having my picture taken with it… They can earn tons of money or clothes/jewlery by just showing up to places it’s amazing.’
Yes, isn’t it amazing! Once you achieve a certain level of fame as an actress (like Amber has, now that she is engaged to Johnny Depp), the opportunities keep coming. These days it isn’t even neccessary anymore to do well with your movies, you can keep it all going by being beautiful, being papped, wearing the right clothes and attending the right parties… It’s not fair! 😉

    • M.A.F. says:

Usually they are paid-either in money or they get to keep something (the dress or jewelry)-to attend certain events, especially if the event is sponsored.

      • Calcifer says:

@ M.A.F. That’s interesting, thanks. I guess the premiere of ‘Two Nights, One Day’ was sponsored by jewellery company De Grisogono who did a dinner party on the same day.

    • Sallywintour says:

been fair, she has been also invited before Johnny to many international events (no Cannes) with Bulgari and Swarovski.

The main difference now, i think, it that she was like the “central piece” of the company. And in the same way that Sharon Stone did it 20 years ago the first time that the brand sponsored the festival, she walked the red carpet with the founder and president of Grigosono and i’ve seen even several kind of tv spots where they show her arriving to the red carpet with the brand.
I think that maybe she’s getting a contract as the face of the brand…

  10. lucy2 says:

i like Petra’s, and the floral D&G is pretty for spring.

  11. mkyarwood says:

Amber’s rocking her Lagertha hair and she looks comfortable. I might have chosen a slightly more fitted blouse, but otherwise, she looks pretty good to me for her ‘level’. Still a better outfit than ANYTHING Julianne Moore wears 🙁

  12. Godwina says:

It’s hard to dislike Petra, period. To me she’ll always be the woman who clung to a tree with a smashed pelvis in a tsunami and lost her fiance. Survivor hero.

Eva’s dress is astonishingly pretty and her whole look is magic.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I like her dress but it’s kind of standard/boring. She looks beautiful though.

  13. Kali says:

Hack the sleeve off Alessandra’s dress and she’d be the best (if we’re going by Cannes fashion standards). But, let’s be honest. She’s gorgeous so, at worst, she just looks like a sexy space ranger who’s going to the ball.

  14. Adrien says:

I quite like Amber’s look. It’s a formal office attire, lol. Alessandra’s gown is beautiful.

  15. Kiddo says:

Selita Ebanks and Eva Herzigova for the win. Although the colors chosen for the floral detail within the gray is making me not love it. I think I would have liked more variations of reds and much less of the gold, which is ruining it. Amber looks pretty, but it seems like the entire outfit is too big for her. I really hate Alessandra Ambrosio’s dress.

  16. M.A.F. says:

Amber’s look would not have been that bad if the top was ironed and fitted and if she had a different hair style (with hair that looked washed).

  17. whatsmyname? says:

How cute Amber is wearing a white tee with a maxi skirt.
I would have liked Alessandras better if the sleeve wasn’t there maybe? It looks tacky.
My favorite is actually the D&G I am suprised by how much I like it.
The cannes fashion has been b-o-r-i-n-g.

  18. The New Classic says:

Amber’s outfit looks to me like a sloppy, ill fitting version of the outfit that Emma Watson wore to Windsor castle last week. Emma looked gorgeous and classy, Amber just looks thrown together. This girl has been around Hollywood for 10+ years now.. Doesn’t she know that a lot of the initial calls for jobs that actresses get are cause of how they look on the red carpet?

    • Calcifer says:

I agree, the outfit doesn’t fit very well, and yet I think I can see what she is trying to convey here. The look reminds me of how she likes to dress in her private time, in t-shirts and maxi-skirts, a little bit hippy. By attempting a chic version of that look, she manages to look more comfortable (and confident) than many of the other models and actresses. It sets her apart.

  19. smee says:

I LOVE Eva Herzigova’s dress. I wonder if those flowers are beaded or embroidered? Gorgeous.

  20. Yellowshaba says:

Can anyone tell me why models are there it’s cannes… are these the renta models?

    • Calcifer says:

We discussed this earlier, it’s probably because the red carpet for the film ‘Two Days One Night’ was sponsored by a jewellery company (De Grisogono). That means the jewellery company can invite models to the red carpet for the film who in turn wear the jewellery (and through this get exposure and are maybe paid extra as well). It’s a win win situation for everybody. Except that maybe, when too many models are populating the red carpet, the commercial aspect of it all becomes too blatant…

  21. Liz says:

Petra used to have such a cute, healthy figure but over the past couple of years she’s looked abnormally skinny. I don’t know if she has an eating disorder or if it’s drug related.

Alessandra’s dress looks matronly – way too old for her.

Eva is just a gorgeous woman.

  22. Jackson says:

Not exactly the topic at hand, but Amber always looks so budget to me. Not just her clothing, but HER. I’m thinking it might be her lipstick choices. Maybe they’re a bit too harsh and that makes her look budget? Whatever it is…budget, budget, budget. I know, it’s mean….

  23. Leah says:

Amber is a bit boring to be honest. She is pretty but there is nothing unique about her looks.
And why is she in Cannes when she doesn’t have a film? She is acting a bit like Lohan and Hilton. Seems she loves a good photo op.

    • Calcifer says:

That’s my impression too, she loves a good photo op. Johnny Depp has been photographed so much more than he ever was before since he got with Amber. I read somewhere that she was known for calling the papparazzi before she got involved with Depp, and I think she is still making sure she / they get photographed at least every two weeks

    • Trashaddict says:

I think her outfit is cute, and her face and hair look like a million bucks. But the expressions of the other folks looking at her on the red carpet? – Priceless.

  24. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Eva was a 90s supermodel so she knows how to work it; Amber and her team are so desperately trying to make her happen, but it just ain’t happening; She just doesn’t captivate the public, even as Johnny’s sidepiece.

  25. Sallywintour says:

We agree to disagree this time dear Bedhead. She has been in every list as one the best dressed, simple and elegant. She took a big risk and won. And as many fashion magazines reported today, this is like THE ONLY look that every normal woman (ok! not from Vionnet) could try to wear.

  26. Grant says:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Amber Heard “kill it” on the red carpet, nor have I ever seen her on any best dressed lists. To be such a devastatingly beautiful girl, her looks are always so bland and boring. And I hate the heavy makeup and red lipstick, especially with that dishwater blonde hair. I think she looks washed out.

  27. Kosmos says:

Personally, I don’t understand why they have to send “models” to these events to walk around and flaunt themselves….I think only the actors should attend– and those associated with them in some way…..Also, I’m just going to say this, although the dresses are beautiful, elegant, amazing to look at, this might as well be a huge fashion show rather than what it really is…..every woman probably feels she has to compete with the others in the looks department. The emphasis doesn’t really have to be on what the women look like, but that’s exactly what every red carpet event has turned into…..I guess it’s safe to say this won’t change, but I would really welcome the day when people can still dress appropriately, but wear what they want and not have to look like a representation of some designer.
