Johnny Depp in his Whitey Bulger bald cap: too crazy or that’s Johnny?

Johnny Depp

These are photos of Johnny Depp leaving the Boston set of Black Mass yesterday. As Kaiser mentioned earlier today, Benedict Cumbercurl has just signed on to replace Guy Pearce in the movie. I hope Cumby isn’t affected by Johnny’s worsening box-office rep. Mordecai got pushed back to next February’s cinematic dumping ground. Cumby, be safe.

Of course Johnny is still wearing his Whitey Bulger costume in these photos. Johnny loves being in costume so much that he probably went home and slept in the bald cap. He cannot play a regular guy. He has to go as far away from his true persona as possible. This time, Johnny’s playing a really, really bad dude. A mobster. I hope he plays him like a bad guy. Johnny has a history of softening up his villains. His John Dillinger (in Public Enemies) had a heart of gold, and Johnny even managed to play George Jung (the frontrunner of the American cocaine trade in Blow) as a victim. Will he do the same to Whitey Bulger? I hope not.

Johnny is waving so enthusiastically out his car window. He’s a nice guy, you know? He really is. I give him such a hard time, but Johnny appreciates his fans. The weird thing about these pics is that he does look like Tom Cruise during his manic phase. Maybe it’s the costume making Johnny look crazed, or maybe it’s because he looks more like Jack Nicholson than Whitey. But this is some 2005 Tom Cruise level of enthusiasm. I keep drawing parallels between TomKat and Amber, but look at how happy she is to make out with Johnny’s bald cap. She’s good.

These teeth…

They did a great job of making Johnny look like that creep Whitey Bulger!

    • Kiddo says:

I agree, he looks like the older version of him.

    • TheOrginalKitten says:

He looks great and those pics of him waving to the fans made me smile so hard.

Now I feel guilty for being so hard on him all the time.

  2. mimif says:

I laughed because I think I’d rather look at this dude than Scarfy McScarferson.

  3. cicilyC says:

Cumberbatch isn’t a big box office star so I doubt he’d be affected by the film’s failure. Depp would get all the blame.

    • Jaderu says:

Ya the Fifth Estate thing didn’t go over so well so I would say this bulger movie has a double shot of box office stink to it. *hides from the cumbervillagers*

    • Pp says:

The budget is $35 million lol, nobody would care if it didn’t do well because it’s not a commercial movie.

  4. doofus says:

probably one of the best movie costume wigs I’ve ever seen.

and the worst teeth. Ick. Nast.

I know someone who spend a decent amount of time with him and she says he’s like the nicest man on earth. I try to remember that in between eye rolls.

I think he’s super nice. He’s just quirky that’s all. I’m indifferent towards him, I loved him Finding Neverland though.

    • MollyB says:

He did a film in a friend’s hometown a couple years ago and helped my friend’s grandmother down a flight of stairs at a restaurant. I give him eye rolls, too but he seems very sweet.

    • Anthea says:

There’s numerous stories about him doing nice things. When he was filming Pirates of the Caribbean in the UK he turned up to kid’s schools in character and I believe does a lot of that in hospitals.

I like him. I’ve enjoyed a few of his films a lot and there’s much, much worse people out there

      • I LOVE that video. It was so sweet of him to do that. I especially love how the little girl who wrote him the letter, got all bashful and shy when she met him. I would too. When Pirates of the Caribbean first came out, it had actually been a Christmas present for my older sister. She finally gave it to me, because I was ALWAYS watching that movie. Whenever I spent the night at my grandma’s house, I would sit in her kitchen, where she had a little tv and dvd player, and watch the movie while I ate. I freaking LOVED Pirates….

  6. swack says:

To me this is pretty normal looking. I cannot for the life of me watch him in any of the pirates of the caribbean movies or in charlie and the chocolate factory or in alice in wonderland because his characters just weird me out!!! Don’t know why, they just do.

    • Isadora says:

God, I love him as Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter. I really do. It’s just his normal Scarfy persona that seems weird to me lol.

  7. Peanut says:

He reminds me of Christopher Walken in this costume!! (Sorry, Walken.)

I don’t know when I started to be “over” Johnny (maybe since his mid-life crisis?). But I am. I think both JD and Tom Cruise at this middle age of thier careers, should start to transition into smaller roles, instead of the “star” of the picture and trying to be the “it” boy they once were, begging for oustanding box office on . (Brad seems to be heading towards that with his smaller parts). I think those BIG star with BIG box office days are pretty much done for them and they should go small or more ensemble. Tom Cruise seems to be making almost the exact same movie “saving the world” or”on the run” over and over again (is that just me??) like he refuses to acknowledge he is a middle-age Dad, not the young buck anymore. JD’s choices are not always the same, but always in costume is tiresome (I am soooo tired of..I can’t watch the PIrate movies anymore, he ruined once fun character by playing him over and over again). But when JD tries to do “regular” he is no longer beleivable. Both these actors are NOT old, 50s are not old, but they are in the “middle” part of their careers so I just wish they would change career directions (new agents needed!!).

    • Pp says:

There is no reason to be “over” Johnny and he hasn’t done anything that reeks of mid-life crisis. Him and Tom Cruise shouldn’t suddenly start transition into smaller roles just because they are at “middle age”, they are still being offered big roles and blockbusters and you want them to do smaller roles instead of that? I don’t think Johnny is trying to be an “it” boy or anything, he’s just doing projects that he is passionate about and doing something like this small Whitey Bulger project is not exactly begging for oustanding box office. His BIG box office days are not done for and Into The Woods will prove that.

Johnny is not always in costume, he wasn’t in costume in Public Enemies (2009), The Tourist (2009), The Rum Diary (2011) and Transcendence (2014) and he is not in costume in this Whitey Bulger movie. He did regular person in Transcendence and he was believable and convincing.

  9. FingerBinger says:

Johnny’s teeth are disgusting. Maybe he thinks having brown teeth gives him character. Yuck!

  10. peace says:

Johnny is always super nice to everyone.Seriously,I have never read a single bad word about him from people who have met him or worked with him.I feel bad for him when I see all those hateful comments over gossip sites(especially on Lainey’s blog)because I think he is been criticized very harshly and that’s unfair especially when it has to do with his personal life and choices.About the movie,he looks so much like Bulger that it’s almost scary!I’m sure he will deliver an oscar-worthy performance because he is always amazing in gangster movies.I just wish that people will finally give him a break from all that hate because he is a human being after all.

  11. Lala says:

I’ve seen the pics in J.J. and it’s said he was taking a break to go to lunch and when i opened the pictures i was in SHOCK! it’s not only his make up. He was super nice with the people waiting for him and all, as always, but his facial expressions something on his way of looking behind those glasses, the way he smiled, he was still on character and his character is psycho. It scared me…

So, not fair to try to judge him if he’s “tom cruise manic phase” when likely he’s in the “Whitey Bulger manic phase”, he’s acting and i think he’s staying in character.

By the way, it’s super funny that even when he’s in the mind of a merciless criminal, he’s still stop and be nice with the fans…it remembers me when he fell out drunk before his split with Vanessa, and he stands up again and continued signing autographs. No, you can’t fake that level of “niceness”!
