Kristen Stewart in the trailer for ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’: this actually looks good?

wenn21389309

Here are some pics from today’s Cannes Film Festival photocall for Clouds Of Sils Maria. Guess what? Kristen Stewart isn’t there!!! I really thought she was scheduled to appear, but I know she’s working in NOLA on American Ultra, so maybe she couldn’t get away for a few days. Tough. Especially since her film looks really good, and it’s great to see three women star in one film without “supporting” some leading man. Juliette Binoche is the lead of the film, and Kristen Stewart and Chloe Moretz support her. For what it’s worth… I will watch this film just because A) I love Binoche and B) Binoche looks like she’s doing some really interesting work here. I’m giving her mad props for taking this role as an aging, paranoid, self-absorbed actress, sort of like the French, updated version of All About Eve. Here’s the trailer (it’s slightly NSFW because of Kristen’s butt in a thong).

Right? Kristen doesn’t even seem annoying here. Kristen and Robert Pattinson seem to be taking similar career paths these days – more independent films, supporting roles in smaller films, work with people you respect, people who will challenge you. I have no problem with the idea of Kristen Stewart playing a scheming assistant to an aging diva played by Binoche.

So, why didn’t Kristen show up? Was she working or was she worried about running into Sparkles? I’m not positive, but I think Sparkles already left. Weird.

Chloe is wearing Chanel at the photocall – it’s a little obvious, isn’t it? This might be her first Cannes, so maybe she thought everybody dressed up in yacht-wear. Binoche in leather = amazing.

Sorry, but I still find Kstew annoying . Same mannerism in every movie! But the movie looks interesting !

    • Jac says:

Agreed! Stewart baffles me. She is an actress who consistently gets work, yet she only ever transforms through a change of wardrobe or hair.

      • tinyjones says:

Or that could be false and maybe you just have some inherent disdain having to do with her boyfriend? Critics, peers and the industry seem go get her..i think that’s what actually matters. 🙂

      • aquarius64 says:

I don’t get her either. @tinyjones – please get off the lame swipe of any critic of Stewart has a secret desire for EX-boyfriend Robert Pattinson. Stewart has many personal and professional traits that people do not care for; the big one being her unprofessional foolishness with a married director that led to BF Pattison becoming an ex. THAT. WAS. ON. HER. As for critics and peers, what matters at the end of the day are box office receipts, whether if the movie is an indie or a blockbuster. She still has to prove she can put butts in the seats post-Mini-Coopergate/post-Twilight. If she succeeds then it’s an episode in her life she managed to overcome and she can go forward.

    • harpreet says:

Precisely, I mean, actors change the way they talk for different roles, have different mannerisms. Kristen is still Kristen in this.

I might add that Chloe is the scene-stealer (I think she might be parodying Kristen here, lol).

      • OriginalCrystal says:

‘I might add that Chloe is the scene-stealer’

Yeah, this is quite a shock to me tbh. I’m not a fan and have never thought much of her acting but she’s the only one that seems natural in the trailer (and the other clip). Still don’t plan to watch this (and if I do, I sure as hell ain’t paying for it) though.

      • tinyjones says:

Really? Lol, i’ve read over 40 reviews this am, and no one is saying moretz is the scene stealer, it’s all stewart who steals the film according to critics. You mean that’s your opinion? If so..how/where did u see film? It’s not out yet.

      • Liv says:

I agree with you. I think Kristen is the weak part, she’s playing herself again and again….but Chloe seems surprisingly good.

      • OriginalCrystal says:

You read 40 reviews ? I didn’t know that there were that many out already. Link us to some please, I’d love to read them.

      • Lark says:

        @Original Crystal

LOL I’m a fan and I can’t believe someone actually sat through and read 40 reviews. Oh Stans be crazy. I put the link to the Variety review, in which she received a good review for her acting, and IndieWire hated the film but gave her acting props (they actually went after Juliette for somer reason and not Kristen). She’s getting good reviews….I’m a fan, but I was kind of side-eying this because I think she needs to get away from playing depressed hipster types but apparently it worked out in this case.

      • talia says:

She’s getting strong reviews but it looks like the reviews for the movie are mixed.

      • OriginalCrystal says:

        Thanks Lark.

It’s nice that she’s getting good reviews. She’ll always a terrible (one of the worst) actress to me but in an industry where Charlie Sheen gets work, I respect kristen’s hustle tbh and I see no reason why she shouldn’t get work either. Not like she’s getting the best roles anyway. Isn’t she always in movies that get mixed reviews but have strong performances ? Story of her life. Oh well.

I’m honestly just not here for Juliette in English films and I stan her. Does that make me a bad stan?? Ugh. Thank god she only had a small part in Godzilla.

      • Lark says:

        @Original Crystal.

Ha, I’m kind of the same way about Juliette and Marion and I’m a borderline stan for both of them. I adore those women, but in English language films I don’t think their talent ever quite translates through as much. Penelope Cruz has the same issue imo

      • tinyjones says:

My point was: industry screenings were/are being held. Reviews and tweets are all saying it’s Kristen who steals film so was curious why u r saying Moretz does. Am asking if that’s your opinion and where did u see the film? PR are u just going by this trailer..which is odd. Just seems disingenuous and not truthful. Also another ‘great performance at Cannes by stewart’ review is up on vanity fair’s site. Can’t link (or barely post..hmm) this am.

      • Chem says:

Kristens mannerisms are very distinct, its easier to seem like you are “acting” when your everyday mannerisms are blander. Most actors are just saying lines and making the occasional face but because they are generic in the way they naturally move or speak, it blends into the character easier.

I hope she leverages the fact that she isnt quite the stereotypical femme chick and never ever ever returns to the standard romance genre

    • Lark says:

Hey, she’s getting good reviews for her performance so far…..

    • mytbean says:

      K-Stew is just an actor – not a character actor… and I don’t think she’ll ever be that. I don’t think it’s her acting that’s the problem…

The way I see it, there are character actors and basic actors. You have people like Gary Oldman and Sam Rockwell who can become anyone while they convey the wide range of human emotion. But then there’s Christopher Walken who always plays emotional shades of Christopher Walken very well – but he can’t disappear and become anyone else.

I think the primary difference here is that Stewart’s personal history is too well known and distracts from her professional life. I think we’d like her more but all we can see is the same bratty K-Stew parading through the airport, lip biting and eye rolling, clad in grungy clothes and flipping the bird at the cameras.

      • PunkyMomma says:

Well put, Mytbean. My issue with Stewart is that, as an actor, she’s supposed to disappear inside the character. But, in Kristen’s case, the character always gets lost in her, over and over again. All I see are shades of Kristen Stewart. And let’s face it, the notoriety of her personal life is going to be with her for quite a while. Understand, this is not an attack – she’s been vilified mercilessly. That she’s kept going instead of curling up in a fetal position indefinitely (maybe like I would have done) earns her some props in my book. I wish her well.

      • tinyjones says:

That’s odd. I think she’s more a character actor than a leading lady. I think most people who know film and acting terms would agree.

Also to those who think I’m a ‘stan’ love the lingo meangirls, lol..I’m in the business and I know things. I think it’s hilarious that any inference regarding a couple gets attacked with cat claws flailing. Look at your own behavior. Calm down.

The comments about my character and the name calling (in this one thread oddly enough) makes some of you look unhinged. Why am I getting attacked for what I know? This is a celeb gossip board I’d think you’d want someone who had the 411 about this or that. Instead you act deranged and rage filled.

I see reviews because it’s on my twitter TL and I know info because I work at an agency. I’m no krisbian. Or a stan. I like the girl. But just like angelina Jolie she drives some girls/women insane and I think it’s hilarious. Especially the ones who know all the little lingo twi terms yet insult me for being a kribian/Twi hard/robssessed or whatever lameness they use. They’re just demonstrating how deeply overinvested they are in Stewart’s life when you know all her little nicknames and lingo. You’re pretty obvious. Lol

      • Erinn says:

        tinyjones,
your complaints about people attacking your character and inferring things is laughable when you keep posting that everyone seems to be rabidly in love with Patinson and that that’s the only reason they couldn’t like Kristen. As for the ‘name calling’ you’re calling everyone meangirls. So, you know, pot meet kettle.

      • Miss Bennet says:

        tinyjones,

Although your name changes it’s very easy to see that you post here under many different names. The same writing style (Lol!) and the same ridiculous accusations leveled at Stewart critics give you away. And you are not in the business and you do not know things. You are a rabid fan and defender of Stewart. Nothing else. If you defended your idol without resorting to name calling, dishonesty, and silly accusations, you would get more respect.

  2. bluhare says:

So agree about Juliette Binoche. She’s beautiful and not afraid to be who she is. Wish more people in the public eye were like her. I’ve loved her since Damage and Chocolat.

  3. ldub says:

totes will be going to go see this when it comes to E Street cinema

  4. blue marie says:

I’d probably see this, looks decent.

  5. Tess says:

I actually think this looks really good. Kristen Stewart looks like maybe she’s not just pulling off another mumbling, lip-biting role and Chloe Moretz has always kind of impressed me. Plus, Juliette Binoche is a goddess. Maybe it’s my love of French cinema and French things, but I’ll definitely see it.

  6. Cam says:

Chloe looks great. It’s perfect for the venue and occasion.

  7. whatsmyname? says:

Oh this acually looks good! Stewart looks like she is making an effort not to mumble and bite her lip which is great and I loooooove Juliette and I’ve always liked Chloe.

  8. OriginalCrystal says:

Kristen literally has 0 range, she is one of the worst actresses I’ve ever seen. Like damn.
She’s a beautiful girl though so there’s that at least…idk. It’s pretty hilarious that she’s explaining what makes a good actress in that one clip though. Ha! The irony.

Moretz looks like she’s the one who gives the best, most natural performance whereas Juliette looks far too mannered. I really didn’t expect that. I love Juliette but I just can’t f-ck with her english movies, idk but I feel like she hasn’t had a good english movie in a while. I don’t even think I’ll watch this for her tbh.

And hold up…What “classic part” would a 50ish year old woman and a teenager being competing over? The delusion…

    • Samtha says:

I didn’t take it they were competing for the same role. There are two roles–an older woman and a younger woman. When Binoche’s character was young, she played the younger woman. Now that she’s older, she’s being asked to play the role of the older woman. Moretz is taking the role of the younger woman (the same one Binoche played when she herself was younger).

Not sure if that explanation made sense, but that’s what it seemed to me…

    • tinyjones says:

Originalcrystal, don’t take this the wrong way, but honestly you seem to have personal beef with Kristen stewart. I’m sure you’re aware of the unmitigated hatred the girl gets, heck you may have even contributed a hefty amount over the last few years. But surely you recognize the disconnect between your (and others) rage disdain of the girl and her strong admiration peer and industry wide. Even if you want to assail her for Twilight and snow white her indie performances have been well received/reviewed and I suspect you know that.

Which leads me to the obvious. She just turned 24. Has spent the last 6 years of her life with a reviled franchise while at the same time continuing an indie career that was quite stellar. Even if you did believe she was the 2nd coming of keanu as you watched her repeatedly in twilight (snark) I would think you might say..well she’s 18 or 19 she’s maturing and growing let’s see what her future holds..I’ll try to be objective despite my Jones for her boyfriend. Instead it’s this near constant rain of vicious hatred about her acting and character be she 18, 21 or 24.

None of these meangirls be they 14 or 40 ever give her a break from their near constant spitting..leading me to conclude it’s more than just you not being bowled over by her in Adventureland or welcome to the Rileys like others were. Something else is driving this kind of reaction and it’s obvious and longstanding. Please don’t think we can’t see it. Transparent as f. Lol

      • THeOriginalKitten says:

Maybe not. We all have our favorites and not everyone agrees across the board on who is/isn’t a great actor.

For Instance, I like Carey Mulligan a lot but I read SO many people’s comments on here saying she’s “one note”, “bland”, or even “terrible”.

Kristen Stewart is very hit-or-miss for me. She really requires just the right fit for her to shine, and to me that will always make her a mediocre actress. She just lacks the versatility to adapt to a range of roles.

That being said, I do hope she pursues more challenging roles in the future-I don’t wish failure upon her by any means.

  9. Anname says:

Kristen is getting great reviews, across the board. This role seems to suit her style of acting. The Snow White type roles are not her thing, I think that’s pretty clear.
Even though I can’t warm up to her and find her personality difficult, I have always thought she has talent and would be successful in her career. If she could find a way to handle herself (in public and with press) with a bit more class and charm I think people’s perceptions of her would improve.
I think she is expected to be at the premiere later today. Maybe she will wear something from the Chanel Dallas collection – worrisome?

    • tinyjones says:

Lol. Why is that clear..didn’t snow white make about a half billion ?

      • OriginalCrystal says:

In what world did SWATH make half a billion? It did well but let’s not get carried away now.

      • tinyjones says:

Google is your friend. Box office gross domestic & worldwide was almost 400 mil. That’s called a HUGE effing blockbuster. Esp for something not a marvel comic. Again my point was why is it ‘clear’ it’s not her thing when it was so successful. Main point with snow white was her establishing herself as a movie star apart from twilight. She did that.

      • Anname says:

Kristen got the worst reviews of her career in Snow White, that’s why I said it’s not her thing. She is talented, but has a very specific style of acting and it was not suited for Snow White.

Snow White made money, but I wouldn’t call it a”huge effing blockbuster”. That genre, 3 big names -it was going to be successful whether it was a good movie or not. If it was such a blockbuster, the sequel would have been more of a priority to the studio.

      • Lucrezia says:

        Unfortunately … this world.

        Theatre revenue: Worldwide: $396,592,829
        http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=snowwhiteandthehuntsman.htm

But remember a box office only accounts for about 50% of a movies revenue. The rest comes from dvd’s, blueray, rentals, Netflix contracts etc., etc.

So we all live in a world where SWATH’s total revenue was probably around $800 million.

(Note: I do agree that the Snow White role was NOT a good match for Kristen, and she should stick to the angsty/indy stuff. But it did make heaps of money.)

      • tinyjones says:

Annamae, maybe you shouldn’t count ‘reviews’ from hater fans who post on message boards. Who were just soooo disappointed when stewart was cast..as if, it would gave been made without her. Lol It was a fantasy fairy tale and she did what she needed to (made boohoo bucks and established a franchise on her star power) it was a good performance of a harrowing kidnapped young girl fairy tale character say most critics. Don’t overreach.

      • OriginalCrystal says:

There’s no way that the reviews for SWATH were worse than the reviews for Twilight. I mean she barely had any damn lines in the movie…

I have google. I didn’t know that $396 million was equal to half a billion. My bad.

‘Main point with snow white was her establishing herself as a movie star apart from twilight. She did that.’

LOL. Ok boo boo. I won’t argue with a krisbian today. I left the L Chat for a reason. I know you think they’re still together and that Kristen is pregnant so you’re delusional enough. Congrats to your girl Kristen then…movie star. Right.

      • Lark says:

        @Tiny Jones

I am a Kristen fan. She got mixed reviews in Snow White, but the ones that were bad were really bad. Calm down, not everyone’s going to feel the same way and Kristen isn’t going to do well all the time. If you are a fan, be happy that she’s getting good reviews for Clouds of Sils Maria which she really needed post Twilight and that she’s picking some interesting projects.

      • Anname says:

Tinyjones, I know you are ready to peg me as a hater, but perhaps that’s an overreach for you. As I have said, I think Kristen has a lot of talent, but that doesn’t mean she can play every role equally as well as another (you could say this about many very good actors). She seems to do far better in these Sils Maria types of roles. Her performance in Show White was not reviewed kindly by many mainstream reviewers.

Please remember you aren’t going to win any fans for Kristen by going after my post, which was actually positive, saying she was getting great reviews for Sils Maria.

      • MAM says:

I think that was more because of Charlize Theron´s portrayal of the stepmother¡¡ Kristen was the terrible link there¡¡

  10. Alex says:

She is filming American ultra. The writer said she was still shooting last night and producer of clouds of sils Maria said her jet just landed.

  11. talia says:

Looks good – Pinochet is amazing and the stew has a nice as s.

  12. Aysla says:

I like Stewart. I like Binoche. Moretz is playing an older role (and seems to be doing this of late), talented girl. I’d see this.

  13. Lark says:

As one of the few Kristen Stewart fans on here, one of the people from Clouds of Sils Maria said that the American Ultra people had a super tight schedule and that Kristen would probably only be able to make the red carpet premiere and not the photo call. Nothing to do with Sparkles, although I’m sure the insane twi-hards will think that….

The actors are getting good reviews for their performances, so that’s awesome…I really want Juliette Binoche to make another awards circuit because she’s amazing and hasn’t done so in ten years or so. She and Chloe look cute here

  14. Mel M says:

I am KStew hater through and through. I’ve always been perplexed at the amount of work she’s been given for such little range. Like the comments above say, the lip biting and mannerisms are always, always the same. With that being said, the clips in the trailer make her look decent, like she finally realized how terrible she was and is actively trying to be a different character. But who knows, those could be just the best parts of her performance and she may be squinty and awkward in the rest of the film.

    • tinyjones says:

From indiewire: “Sharing scenes with an actress as great as Binoche might seem unwise, but Stewart apparently holds her own, and according to some reviewers, even prevails.” “Some of us think she’s been great all along.”

  15. Ali J says:

Stewart fan as well. Film looks great and I plan on seeing it.

If she keeps going this way in her career she will have a good future in film.

  16. MeganDraper says:

Someone is going on all sorts of boards praising/hyping Kristen Stewart??? That doesn’t help her, it makes everyone roll their eyes at the stans and her as a by-product. She still needs to grow as an actor and a person. Twilight was the best and worst thing for her. She may have been a natural or faked it when she was younger. Now she doesn’t seem to be as natural. As mentioned above, there are actors that just do….and you believe them.

Good for her that she’s gone back to indies, that’s her niche. Supporting roles in major films if she gets parts. She just can’t carry a major picture. Not yet anyways. It will be interesting to see her career when she’s 30.

I didn’t really like Snow White. Visually very good but underwritten, Kristen barely talked in it. Was there a reason for it?

  17. OriginalCrystal says:

Aww looks like boopti changed her name today. Kristen fans are always ‘in the business’ aren’t they ?? How cute… calling others deranged. The lack of self-awareness. I wonder if they overlap with ‘beliebers’ ? Both as delusional, that’s for sure. ‘working at an agency’. uh-huh, sure.

  18. Happy21 says:

I may have to see this. It looks really different, kind of fresh. I though KStew was awful in the Twilight movies and that is all I’ve seen her in besides stuff from when she’s a kid. I’m willing to give her a shot.

  19. OriginalCrystal says:

Also have there been any other Cannes posts that I’ve missed ? I want to talk about Xavier Dolan’s good reviews. I’m so proud of him. I was afraid he’d get panned. I couldn’t stop smiling when i read the reviews.

    • Pinky Rose says:

I love Dolan (he is very pretentious and all, but who wasn’t at that age) and I’m so glad he is getting the recognizition he deserves. Laurence Anyways is one of the most heartfelt and complex films about love, and feautures a tour de force performance by Suzanne Clement. Mommy is probably his most accessible and mature film so far according to critics, and many friends who are in Cannes have told me that he is a strong possibility for the Palm D’or, and if it can’t get that the best actress for Dorval or best drector for Dolan.

    • Pinky Rose says:

Obviously Stewart is getting very good reviews for this and the cast is also getting good ink (though it is weird that Binoche is not getting the supperlatives reviews she always gets, but she has two best actress prize here, so). But it is an Assayas film so it is given. Also according to many the film was very well received by the press and film goers at an screening without anyone of the cast, which is extremely weird.

  20. Janet says:

Same dead eyes. Nothing new here.

  21. Reece says:

Sooo “All About Eve” with a lesbian twist and french subtitles.

  22. stacat1 says:

Kristen looks good in this but it is the same note she plays in all her roles. She has not shown much range…if it’s in there – I haven’t seen it. When she tries to play out of that range..it usually doens’t go well for her.
Binoche is Binoche and is great reading the phone book.

Kristen is with them today in Cannes.

  23. Ravensdaughter says:

Looks like a must see film to me.
Last I heard (Rolling Stone magazine a couple weeks ago), Kristen was filming a country video for a friend. Stacat1 says she’s in Cannes now, so that might explain the delay.

  24. Tiffany :) says:

I have only seen Stewart in Adventureland and half of Twilight (I couldnt make it all the way through).

I thought she was REALLY good in Adventureland. The reviews are saying she did a great job in this too. I am mostly excited about a film about women that isn’t centered around a male driven love story. Yippee!

Juliette Binoche is so gorgeous and talented, and that picture of her jumping brings me SO much joy! 😀

  25. Camille (The Original) says:

Looks interesting, will definitely check it out.

  26. Bridget says:

Hey, whatever happened to the commenter that was saying that she had it on good authority that Kristen had gone underground because she was secretly pregnant with Sparkles’ baby? That was my favorite.

  27. Isadora says:

I haven’t seen a lot of Kristen’s films but those I’ve seen (Twilight, SWATH) were beyond awful. I think she’s a pretty girl, very edgy, but her mannerism is very distinct (and not that appealing to me) and it was horrible for the Snow White character – that really wasn’t her role.

Having said that I think she looks decent in the Sils Maria trailer. I hope for her (and the movie) that she did fine in that one – maybe she has now found her type of roles. She should stick to those things because I won’t ever sit through another SWATH. Even if tinyjones thinks now I’m a horrible person and want to have babies with Sparkles.

    • sail says:

I’ll probably go see it as well. Watching the trailer and the several clips they released it seems interesting. However Kristen’s absolute monotone voice throughout the trailer and clips no matter what shes saying might get a bit annoying tho…

      • MeganDraper says:

yes, that voice, I was trying to think who she reminds me of–Demi Moore for one thing but her voice, it doesn’t change. That’s one thing she needs to work on.

  28. phlyfiremama says:

Sign me up as one of the few KStew fans here. Yes her real life mannerisms (at least those we see most publicized) make ME roll my eyes and bite my lip in frustration but she is INCREDIBLY talented as an actress. If she was truly just so-so no one would even care. Her roles (purely subjectively just ike ANY actor) are compelling and believable. The TRUE problem is that people can’t separate her acting from her initial character~the frustration with the CHARACTER of Bella Swan bleeds over into the perception of her as an actress. Something is wrong, yes, but it is Bella and her dysfunctional reationship with Edward, not Kristen the real life person. Purely subjectively (as is ANY comment, including the original post), IMO she is one of the more interesting actresses currently working. And yes, I am an unabashed JLaw and Angelina fan as well. NO ONE gets to tell me who I do/should like as an actor~the mob mentality of bashing for the sake of bashing just doesn’t fly with me.

    • OriginalCrystal says:

Lol @ this comment. Kristen fans are always such victims. Like, who’s forcing you to hate her or telling you who you should like as an actor?? So dramatic…

‘If she was truly just so-so no one would even care’

Um that’s not how celeb gossip works dear. You don’t have to be talented for folks to comment. Kim K hasn’t got an ounce of talent and gets more page views/comments than most stars so…
What’s Jessica Alba’s talent and why do we pay attention to her ??

‘She is INCREDIBLY talented as an actress’

I agree. Also Flo Rida is INCREDIBLY talented as a rapper (next Tupac tbh) and the mob mentality of bashing him for the sake of bashing just won’t fly with me!!! Fight the power !!!

I don’t care what Stewart’s personal life is, I don’t care who “in the business” likes her or not, when I watch a movie, I want to see acting; good acting, great acting, either will do. If you watch Stewart’s movies when she was young, she spoke her lines slowly and clearly. I don’t know what happened between then and the Twilight series and I don’t care, she ruins every movie I see with her in it. Her rapid fire delivery reminds me of so many parties I went to in LA, with everyone (and plenty “in the business”) there talking like that; fast with no meaning. Watch the trailer again, watch any movie she has been in lately, she speaks so much faster than anyone else in the scene, there is no depth of meaning to anything. Stresses, pauses, and inflection is how emotion is projected, and important in having other humans connect on an emotional level. R2D2 delivered a better line. Moretz and Binoche are outstanding, but for some reason they will never get the hype Stewart gets. Perhaps “someone in the business” can explain to me why she keeps getting cherry roles. Never mind, rhetorical question.

I do not get movies with female leads that only seem interesting to people if they want to screw each other. is that the only thing that will get a women centric film made? I am disappointed.
