Duchess Kate in Goat shift, Jonathan Saunders coat in Scotland: frumpy or cute?

wenn21405923

I thought this event was happening earlier this week, but I must have gotten my dates wrong. Duchess Kate and Prince William made an appearance in Scotland today. So… I should probably refer to them as the Count and Countess of Strathearn, which are their Scottish titles. This is their first joint appearance since the Australian/New Zealand tour, and it’s Kate’s first appearance since the tour. We already heard that she was too busy “decorating” Anmer Hall to do any royal appearances before now, although I think there’s a good chance Kate would have liked to make a few appearances with William but he stopped her because he didn’t want her to pull focus. He’s got a point because I don’t even care enough about him to include any solo photos of his boring navy suit.

This is also her first appearance since Bum-gate! I guess that’s why Kate was swathed in more clothing than usual in Scotland. She wore an appropriate knee-length shift dress by Goat, an appropriately thick, conservative Jonathan Saunders coat and her beloved nude LK Bennett heels. I’ve always liked Kate in red, so this works for me. The coat is slightly frumpy (the sleeves are too bulky), but I think that’s on purpose. She wants to look a bit modest and conservative especially since most people are fed up with the Bum-Flashing Duchess.

The appearance was to “unveil a plaque at Macrosty Park in Crieff.” They visited the Strathearn Community College and William wanted to see the helicopter and meet all of the crew and staff. The Daily Mail is taking this as evidence that William really wants to join the Royal Air Ambulance service. We’ll see, Wills. We’ll see. Also: in the Mail photos, Kate looks flat-out exhausted. I wonder… do you think she’s knocked up again? Or do you think Prince George just kept his mom up last night?

PS… I threw in some closeups for those of you on Wiglet Watch.

Well she is consistent on her awful shoe and make up choices, I will give her that.

    • Audrey says:

I think she bought those shoes in bulk

I think she might be pregnant. Her hair is alot thicker like it is during pregnancy. She got some weave put in or something is going on

      • Xantha says:

I doubt she’s pregnant seeing as she drank whisky that she and William “brewed” together during this trip.

And I hate this outfit simply because it’s not a pantsuit. I really wish she would consider wearing pantsuits and until she does, I won’t shut up about them.

      • Audrey says:

Ah okay. Just a new weave then

Is she “allowed” to wear a pantsuit?

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Audrey•

Yes. Sophie wears them on occasion.

      • arabella says:

@xantha haha to each their own I guess. I hate wearing pantsuits! I wear dresses even in the dead of Chicago winters because I find pants in general kind of uncomfortable. It’s easy to look chic and put together with just a one-piece dress than putting together a blouse with pants, IMO.

      • AM says:

I think it’s just a personal preference for Kate. As LS pointed out, Sophie wears them on occasion. As did Diana, who also wore them to evening occasions! We’ll never see Kate play with fashion like that.

    • HH says:

I think the shoes actually work for this outfit. She’s just worn them so many times (unnecessarily), it’s taken away any effect “nude” shoes can have.

Also, I came to the conclusion a while back that I just don’t like her style so I’m not sure if she can ever really “wow” me. Her outfits are “nice,” but she’s just so… boring/bland/blah. Actually, it’s not just the outfits, it’s the hair, the accessories, the makeup, etc.

EDIT: And before anyone without a shred of common and/or fashion sense makes this remark, let me get this out of the way: No, I don’t expect her to dress like a Kardashian. But a statement necklace/bun/makeup artist/ (insert your option here) wouldn’t kill a sister.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •HH•

I think she’s really bland as well. I actually dislike this outfit for precisely that reason too. Though, I’ll agree, the shoes, as much as I’ve grown tired of them, do work here. (It pains me to admit that! Lol)

      • Feeshalori says:

I so agree, HH, she needs to bump up her look with accessories, whether it’s a great hairstyle, necklace, scarf, handbag, shoes. Whatever it takes to make a ho-hum look really dazzle.

    • anomie says:

      at least she’s not flashing

      • Dena says:

My initial thought was “but is she wearing drawers?” There will never be enough PR to wipe the slate clean. But hopefully, in terms of her demeanor and approach to her duties, she has hit bottom and will hopefully give people more to comment on other than her clothes or lack thereof.

      • charlie says:

It never fails. On every CB Kate thread there is someone who says, “Hopefully this will be the turning point and now hopefully she will improve.”

PEOPLE! She will never improve! Don’t you see the pattern by now? There is no hope for this bimbo. She is only worsening.

      • Dame Snarkweek says:

Bimbo? Really not okay with this.

      • hmmm says:

charlie, I agree she is a bimbo aka WAG.

And she won’t improve- you are right. I surely don’t live in hope.

      • teehee says:

Bimbo!! Thats it!! Thats so totally befitting her! I hadnt realized it, but yes oh yes that sums her up perfectly! Ok, I can officially give up expecting a positive surprise from her one day, shes not capable of it.

  2. wolfpup says:

There’s an article in the DM about a “miraculous strapless g-string that adheres to your skin – so one can go nearly commando”! Perhaps that’s what Kate wears…

    • LadySlippers says:

I saw that too and laughed.

    • wolfpup says:

Kidding aside, we pretty much know what motivated the photographer and media outlets that carried Butt-Gate. Perhaps it was even released to take the heat off Charles (did you see that good-looking ginger prince today?) It escapes comprehension of what Kate could have been thinking…

I’ve been thinking about the public who looks at these stories. The men who search out the pictures are enjoying a look (do you think that Charles did? we know he did along with every other guy who heard about it – think of the servants). Women on the other hand, go to compare their bums; and again, it’s all about the male gaze. Some women will do all sorts of things for the male gaze! We can’t change men, because we can’t change anyone, but we certainly can control the conversation.

      • bluhare says:

Michael D is rhapsodizing over Prince Hot Ginge’s happy trail this afternoon. I love his posts on Harry.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

      Wolfpup
Don’t make me love you, lol.
Remember Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction during the super bowl halftime show? Jackson was absolutely demonized and Timberlake increased his celebrity profile immeasurably. Few people even realized or cared about the fact that they were actually dating at the time.
But what bothered me the most were the droves of women who called her an old, shameless, nasty, desperate has-been and worse – that her body should have been better looking because she is wealthy. I don’t think many women realize just how ingrained our male generated preferences/decisions are. I have become comfortable asking myself some of those tough questions and I enjoy unpacking societal perspectives/expectations when it comes to women.that is why Kate often disappoints me but it is also why I find her to be relatively harmless. She doesn’t really anger/threaten/evoke strong emotions from me because I try to see her with my own lens, not Rupert Murdoch’s.

    • Lizzy1013 says:

Janet Jackson and Justin timber lake were dating??? Wow good piece of old school gossip!! Thanks!

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

      Liz
Lol, see what I mean! I was outraged that he left her to dangle like that on top of everything else, you know? And he is the one who actually pulled the little booby flap down. Smh.

  3. aims says:

    Let’s hope she’s wearing panties.

  4. Loopy says:

Did she finally get the weights put in,i guess it wasn’t windy.

  5. Looloo says:

Tell me, no snark, how do you walk on lawn with heels like that?

  6. Maxine7 says:

That dress is definitely staying put!

  7. Louise says:

    Those shoes are bloody awful.

    • Looloo says:

Ikr. Plus, a red dress and beige (i don’t like using nude because not everyone’s skin is that colour :D) shoes. Every governor’s wife and their cat’s mistress had that unoriginal thought. So…I guess she’s dressing appropriately – I mean, she IS a political wife. Just don’t call her a fashion plate, for god’s sake, because she really isn’t.

    • kri says:

      Oh, god, THE SHOES!!

  8. Looloo says:

I’m surprised the coat isn’t belted.

    • LadySlippers says:

      True.

I’m actually surprised she isn’t carrying her tartan scarf. Or wearing tartan. She seems to be thinking — I’m in Scotland; must have some tartan about my person. Like it’s some kind of ‘Scottish uniform’.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

She was given a huge teddy bear for George that was clad in a tartan kilt. And yes, the bear’s kilt did blow up in the wind.

  9. nima1 says:

Why has she reverted back to the 1980’s eyeliner style? Ugh.

  10. sue says:

I like that fact that this visit is aptly described by Kaiser as an “appearance” (v.s. actual “work”). Seriously, all she has to do is show up and smile and do a bit of a meet and greet. No speeches, no hard questions, no hard labour. Ah, the life of Riley…

  11. sunsetsnow says:

She, and all the Middletons, matches too much.

  12. saraghina77 says:

Why why why is her hair always so untidy?? Why not wear it up if it’s going to be windy?

    • Kali says:

She’s dressing appropriately for once, you can’t expect her to think about her hair and do something with that AS WELL! Are you a slave-driving MONSTER? A woman is only capable of so much!! /sarcasm, obviously 😉

      • saraghina77 says:

Of course!! What was I thinking? After all the hard work put into this ensemble she deserves at least a month of rest and redecoration!

    • Ana Maria says:

…yes, that…I’d like to see her with her hair up, a braid, anything…it’s just…I don’t know; I think she should wear her hair up, for official appearances…

      • ArtHistorian says:

I it quite possible to have hair that isn’t mussed by the wind. At the link is a video that show the Danish royal ladies and their impreccable hairdos on a ver windy day in Copnehagen (some lovely dresses too:

        http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.dk/2014/05/royal-outfit-of-day-may-28.html

      • bluhare says:

They do look nice. I liked Mary’s look, but I know a lot of people didn’t. That wind was blowing!!!

      • ArtHistorian says:

Yes, it was a windy day, but it is always especially windy at the entrance of the Opera House and other of the large buildings that is situated at the harbour, like the National Library.

CP Mary always look very nice in dark burgundy and purple. I also like Princess Marie’s white ruffled dress, and Princess Benedikte is always well-dressed for the occasions.

  13. Kali says:

What’s I find most sad about her is that I’m legitimately SO surprised that she’s actually managed to dress completely appropriately for an event. A grown woman has actually managed to wear something that is appropriate for her job. And then I realise it’s because her butt has been on the cover of newspapers around the world and she needs to cover her (literal/figurative) butt for once.

Don’t mind me, I’ll just be over here, drawing what the N.Z flag should be for when we hopefully become a Republic.

    Yours sincerely,

    A former die-hard royalist

  14. Stef Leppard says:

She seems to be wearing her wedding ring on the outside. Is that a British thing?

    • ahoyhoy says:

Nope–she’s swollen. Everywhere, but her fingers are downright pudgy here. PREGNANT.

Her wedding ring looks too tight to fit down in its proper place. She usually does wear her rings properly, that I’ve noticed. My opinion, as I said above, is that she’s knocked up.

    • Inconceivable! says:

She wears her hold wedding ring closest to her hand, then her giant sapphire, then an eternity band last (closest to her fingertips). Her ring placement looks typical to me.

      • LadySlippers says:

Agree with Inconceivable!. This is how she wears her rings and her wedding band is pretty darn small compared to her engagement ring. I think it often gets lost.

      • Stef Leppard says:

Ah, I see now. I thought the eternity band was the wedding ring.

    • LAK says:

You can clearly see the yellow gold of her wedding ring before her engagement ring after which is white gold [or platinum] of her eternity ring in picture no 2 above.

  15. Rachel Robbins says:

Girlfriend – PULL. BACK. YOUR. HAIR.

    • Olenna says:

I’ll second that. The hair is too long, too drab and aging. A layered haircut, smart tailored suit and a more sophisticated accessory than that cocktail engagement ring would be less aging. Her favorite design houses like McQueen make beautiful scarves and tasteful fashion jewelry but, unfortunately, I don’t think accessorizing is one of her strong points.

      • bluhare says:

It’s her engagement ring. Whether we like it or not is one thing, but she can’t very well replace it. Can you imagine the outcry? Especially when it’s replaced with something that would cost a fortune?

    • Bohemia says:

I can sympathize with her here. I looove long hair and grew mine out, but now I have no idea what to do with it! Of course, if I were her I’d be indulging in all the perks and hire a hairdresser for these occasions.

  16. Liz says:

Before reading the article I took one look at the opening photo and thought she looks very tired.

  17. PHD gossip says:

I am always on wiglet watch and she seems to be wearing a “fall”.
Thanks, Kaiser – keep the wiglet watch on Duchess Barebottom.

    • ArtHistorian says:

Is it that slightly elevated part of her hair at the back of her head? I thought it was just a comb-back.

  18. Esti says:

I like the coat a lot. And I really don’t understand the hate for those shoes — no, they’re not exciting, but they’re classic, lovely pumps.

I could buy the pregnancy thing except that they’re supposed to visit a distillery today, and if she was pregnant again I imagine the palace would have quietly rearranged the schedule to drop that event. But I guess we’ll see later today — if she drinks during that tour, then she’s definitely not.

    • Ellen says:

The distillery photos are out and she prominently takes a sip. Probably not pregnant then.

Don’t you know how exhausting it is to decorate ones country manor? One is being kept awake nights fretting about the spectre of lavender paint.

    • astrobiologiste says:

Don’t rule out pregnancy yet. In one picture she has the exact same expression she had when leaving the hospital after HG. And she did take a sip of the whisky, but if whisky tastings are anything like wine tastings, she might have spit it out? Or maybe she just looks queasy for no reason…

      http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/05/29/article-2642814-1E4D2CCA00000578-731_470x697.jpg

    • RobN says:

There’s actually nothing wrong with having a drink now and then while pregnant. It’s another place the pendulum has swung too far. There is a world of difference between the odd glass of wine or a sip of whiskey and the kind of drinking that results in fetal alcohol syndrome. It’s just another place where women are bullied if they don’t toe the media line.

      • FLORC says:

        I agree RobN.
With these 2 though they are hyper aware of drinking and pregnancy. No way would Kate be caught even sipping water unless they weren’t trying.

That’s why those cigarette shots were taken down so quickly. They have bad habits, but do not openly broadcast them while at events.

      • Ronia says:

Absolutely. In my world we all drink our glass of wine, pregnant or not. Or a beer. We are all fine, mothers and children.

      • FLORC says:

        Ronia
Just not every day, not to excess, and not during the trimester of brain development.

I’m agreeing a small amount here and there isn’t a guarantee for FAS, but it’s not a pass to have that beer of wine at every dinner. It really depends on the person and their health/family history.

You, Ronia, have been lucky, but not everyone can do as you and your family have done and also be fine.

      • sandring says:

Actually, there is abolutely nothing wrong with drinking 1-2 glasses of alcoholic beverages a week in the first trimester, and 1 a day beyond that. One sip of whiskey will not cause FAS; you need to binge drink (15 + units) in a sitting to be a FAS risk. Below that you’re looking at potential decreases to IQ. I’m currently 14 weeks pregnant and have been scrupulous about looking into this, and in checking with my extremely experienced obstetrician as well. The official advice is “no level of alcohol has been proven safe” as it’s impossible to carry out ethical, well-designed research on pregnant women to test all levels of drinking, but there are plenty of well-designed studies that support the conclusions above. Sadly I can’t take my own advice as I’m so queasy I can’t stomach the smell of wine, let alone a sip. I can’t wait to have a nice dinner with a good glass of pinot noir and any stranger who decides to gives me ill-informed advice will be put firmly in their place.

        I think she’s pregnant too.

    • bluhare says:

I agree about the shoes, Esti. Three years ago she was a trend setter with them.

  19. Amanduh says:

“PS… I threw in some closeups for those of you on Wiglet Watch.”
…might be the saddest thing I’ve ever read, lol.

    • NN says:

lol she is wearing one though *saddo*

    • Bohemia says:

I both LOLed and cringed reading that, haha.

    • FLORC says:

Sad for you but fun for us! Wiglet Watchers Assemble!

      • bluhare says:

Present and accounted for, FLORC! What do you think? Wiglet? I’m thinking maybe so.

      • AM says:

I think definitely, and it’s not even blended in all that well today. All that height at the crown.

      • bluhare says:

That’s what I thought too, AM. Plus there’s a difference in texture.

I’ve got great company being sad and pathetic!!

      • LadySlippers says:

Not only what you’ve all have pointed out — there’s another tell no ones mentioned. Her ‘fall’ doesn’t have roots! If you go back and look, all the hair at the back (looks like it’s been back combed) has no roots whereas the front clearly does.

      • wolfpup says:

I saw the silly bump! I want to go on the wiglet wagon!

  20. Helvetica says:

No doubt they made her wear that after her upskirt issue.

  21. jemima says:

I see weights in the hem of that coat plus look at the length of her hemline – Madam’s been told to cover up!! Wish someone would enforce mandatory updo’s for her – that hair!

Also I agree with everyone saying shes pregnant – she’s stopped botoxing which is resulting in her looking so tired

  22. Khalesi says:

She just needs to start wearing pencil or a-line cuts and no more bumgate fiascos

  23. Abby_J says:

I’m not getting the hatred toward the shoes. Granted, I am not a fashionista, but they look like normal generic heels. Maybe a bit boring, but what would you like her to have worn with the dress?

I like the dress, but I would have liked to see her wear that beautiful plaid coat that she wore last year. I do adore plaid.

  24. justme says:

As a number of posters pointed out, she was drinking whisky at the distillery. So she’s not pregnant.

I agree with @Abby_J about the heels. Maybe it’s just that I’m not a big shoe person, but they look OK to me – not exciting, but how exciting can shoes get?

  25. Francis says:

Finally she’s getting the hems right, no panty flashing. I like the coat, I like the dress, mainly because the length is correct for her and what she should have been doing all along and that coat looks held down. Did she finally after dozens of panty flashes, just get into her hard head that weighting down her clothing hems is the correct way to go.
She looks really haggard, like she has aged about five years since her last outing. I wonder if the Palace handlers finally gave her hell?!
Finally Her Royal Hineyness is understanding the proper thing to wear on these outings.

    • Wren33 says:

You can’t really compare how her dress acts on a normal day and in front of a helicopter. It is possible she has no weights here, and it is possible a helicopter could kick up a skirt even with weights. I don’t know what she is doing or not.

    • Aeryn39 says:

Even the The Telegraph took a bit of a dig at Waity today which seems unusual to me (“DoC dresses for gusty weather in Scotland”). For those who live in the UK – do you find the Telegraph more deferential/less snarky than the Mail or is it just because I don’t read the Telegraph regularly that today’s headline seems to stand out for me?

Anyhow, the Telegraph article says she has weighted the hems of this outfit and that she personally quashed the pregnancy speculation. I’ve linked the article below:

      http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/theroyalfamily/10862634/Duchess-of-Cambridge-dresses-for-gusty-weather-in-Scotland.html

For what it’s’ worth, I remember when I was in school in England back in the early 90’s, one of my instructors told me that you should put more stock in the “broadsheets” like the Telegraph than something like the Mail. I don’t know if that’s still the case and my boarding school in England was very conservative – I don’t think I ever saw a Guardian or Independent my whole year there, LOL!!

      • LadySlippers says:

The Telegraph is a firmly Royal newspaper, hence the deferential tone. They often will run identical articles to the DM just without the stupid editorial comments. And a dig at Kate is huge from them (I noticed it too).

  26. Penelope says:

I’m sick of seeing the shoes but they’re not THAT bad. Not sure why people on here hate them with such passion.

She always looks pretty to me but yeah, she needs to deal with THE HAIR.

    • Abby says:

I actually bought those shoes because she wears them and I have a boring corporate job where they are totally appropriate. She was right, I can stand in those suckers all day and be totally comfortable.

  27. hmmm says:

It’s remarkable that when she’s not done something scandalous, there is little to say about her- she’s that boring. Did y’all see she’s wearing a brooch? Didn’t think so, thanks to placement and all that fake hair. She must hate brooches.

She does look haggard. Must be bummed out by something. Heh.

  28. kay/lv says:

With all of the money they have I still cannot understand why she doesn’t get make-up lessons. Im sorry but her make-up always looks halloweenish to me. Black eye liner applied like she has it, just makes her look old. Please do something with her hair. Her and Cressida will be having a contest as to who looks the sloppiest.

    • FLORC says:

She likes how she applies her own make up. For better or worse she refuses professional help.

  29. smee says:

Showing her bum is by far the most interesting thing she’s ever done.

    • Olenna says:

Agree. I should just go ahead slap myself for commenting above on her boring hair and fashion choices. Nothing new there.

  30. The Original Mia says:

Those shoes are better than the wedges.

I like the coat, but I liked it better on the model. Didn’t seem as bulky on the model. Here, it looks like another of Kate’s housecoats.

  31. wow says:

She always seems to come out on top after controversy.

This outfit sort of ages her but I love the pumps and clutch.

    • Francis says:

I wouldn’t call this appearance as coming out on top. She’s lowered the bar so much that when she’s mediocre it’s a good day for her.
I still have little respect for her and think she’s trashy.

  32. bcgirl says:

lost all respect for her yesterday.

    • Feeshalori says:

For sure, all I’m thinking now is she wearing a thong or nothing at all? Kind of takes the focus away from the event when you wonder what lies beneath as well as critiquing her outerwear.

      • jasmina says:

Honestly, for the so-called respectable and professional position she is in, I cannot understand why she is not more ashamed of herself for having zero common sense when it comes to dressing properly. I mean COME ON, the entire world should not know what your private parts look like. Keep yourself respectable and not low-class trash! Really, I wonder if William or any of the other Royals talk to her about her “wardrobe malfunctions” or do they turn a blind eye to it as it appears she does. She always looks so smug and proud of herself with not one ounce of shame or regret. Really odd woman that Kate is.

  33. Martha Speaks says:

Wasn’t there a recent story about how she skipped a Ralph Lauren event b/c she was ill due to pregnancy or am I just imagining it?

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

There were reports that Lauren was upset about her not attending a charitable event held in his honor, but Kate was never slated to appear in the first place. William remarked to a guest that Kate was at home with George but no official reason was given because she was not supposed to be there in any official capacity anyway.

  34. Racer says:

Everything she wears looks exactly like something she already wore.

  35. FLORC says:

    Wiglet!
I’m no hair professional, but would a wiglet blend better if her hair was set and not blowing everywhere?

Regarding her coat. I hate that fade inout line work. It’s just a general dislike of mine. At least the hem line is set right and that coat is the appropriate thickness to hold everything down.
Past events the coat is buckled with a belt and there’s no dress to be seen underneath. This open coat with dress is appropriate. She needs to do this more often.

  36. Maggie says:

So now she’s wearing some old lady garb and ppl are still complaining. Chick can’t win! Personally I think she does a great job esp with the children. She always looks engaged and happy.

  37. Patty Cake says:

I don’t think she’s preggers again just yet. At least I hope not. Having one child after another without giving the womb a good rest isn’t really a good idea. Not saying it shouldn’t be done, but I think the womb deserves the break after carrying a baby for 9 mos. Also, it’s harder to give the first baby the attention or lap-time they deserve when you juice the baby maker too soon. I suspect her lethargic appearance comes from decorating a home as big as hers.

  38. Lizzy1013 says:

They do have a young crew surrounding them. Maybe they don’t think to check the weather when outfits/hairdos are planned. Or maybe she is advised about it but she doesn’t give a crap. She’s like “I’m the duchess bitches! I do what I want!!”

Anyone else catch that they made this a bit of a working vacation? Certainly there was a royal residence they could have stayed at last night rather than a hotel/resort?

    • hmmm says:

They stayed at a resort????????? (Which also would mean RPO stayed …where?)

    • Bwarf says:

God forbid! Staying in a hotel does not equal a “working vacation”. They are not the first, and likely not the last, royals to stay in a hotel while on a royal engagement.

I would have preferred it if she just wore the dress. It seems long enough that she wouldn’t need a coat. The coat would have been better without those lines too but I do like the brooch. I love those shoes. They seem a little high for walking in a grassy area but I do like them.

I cannot believe all these negative comments. I absolutely love love love everything she wears from head to toe. Love the hair and the shoes also. Everything suites her. She is the epitome of class and I think she is absolutely beautiful. She does wear her hair back and fixed in a fancy bun from time to time and if you look at the Danish royalty they wear there hair the same on different occasions. My family is Danish lived there 2 years while in school and absolutely love everything Denmark does.

The world is going to run out of coats because Kate needs one in the exact shade of every outfit she has. Seriously this womans clothes wear her. She needs to stop trying so hard.
