Liberty Ross got ‘guilt money’ in divorce, more than half of Rupert Sanders’ assets

wenn21154967

We haven’t checked in on Liberty Ross in a while, which is too bad. I enjoy Liberty. I kind of wish she had really “told all” about her then-husband Rupert Sanders’ affair with Kristen Stewart, but I can’t fault her for “staying above” the tabloid fray. She played the post-affair stuff really well, and she came out of it looking like a wronged woman who got the last laugh – it was obvious that Rupert wanted to get back with Liberty but she ended up filing for divorce six months (exactly, if I remember correctly) after Us Weekly published the photos of Kristen and Rupert in the Mini Cooper. Now TMZ got their hands on Liberty’s divorce settlement, and she made out pretty well:

Liberty Ross now has her own chapter in the Silver Linings Playbook — CHEATING can pay handsomely.

Liberty’s divorce from director Rupert Sanders is now settled … TMZ has learned. We’re told Rupert has given Liberty more than half of the marital assets or, as one source said, “He paid her guilt money.”

As you know … Rupert famously cheated on Liberty by banging Kristen Stewart during the filming of “Snow White and the Huntsman” … which he directed. Liberty played Kristen’s mom.

We found legal docs filed May 22 in which Rupert gave Liberty his interest in their $2 million Hollywood Hills home. The other assets were divided up, and we’re told she made out very well.

And here’s Liberty’s ultimate f-you to Rupert. Not only did she get more than half … she’s dating music mogul Jimmy Iovine, who according to Forbes is worth just a hair under 1 BILLION.

Kristen Stewart, Rupert. Really?

[From TMZ]

Well, at the time of Rupert’s affair, he and Liberty had already been married ten years. And she filed for divorce in California, which (I think) means that all of the community property laws apply. Meaning she got half of his assets (their assets) because it’s the law and she had a good lawyer, not necessarily because of “guilt.” Plus, I’m sure he’ll be paying child support for their two kids together. And beyond Liberty’s current billionaire boyfriend, she’s still getting work as a model in NYC and London. I doubt that work is enough to pay the bills, but still… she’s got some income coming in.

This July will be the second anniversary of the affair and Us Weekly’s publication of the affair photos. Who came out ahead? I’d say that Kristen is still slowly coming back after not working for a year following the affair revelations. Liberty came out of this smelling like a rose. The biggest loser seems to be Rupert – after some gossip that Rupert would quickly get another directing gig, he hasn’t been firmly attached to anything. His career and his personal life are in the dumps. Which is unusual in Hollywood – that the married man who carried on an affair with a young actress is the one who has been “punished.” SHOCK!

Get it girl! I’m happy for her!

  2. Loopy says:

She made out like a bandit!

  3. Esti says:

I don’t have any real opinions on her, except that I hate pretty much everything she wears. This red dress is not an exception.

    • zinjojo says:

Ha, my thoughts exactly. She’s beautiful and has a great figure, but she dresses horribly. I’ve never seen her in anything that I didn’t immediately hate.

  4. Pumpkin Pie says:

That picture of him and Kristin creeps me out every time I see it

  5. lunchcoma says:

I think the guilt money bit is because of the “more than” half. I also doubt it was guilt money. More likely, it was to compensate her for not writing a tell all book or continuously giving interviews about the divorce.

    • elinor says:

I believe calling it guilt money was just TMZ creating a dramatic headline. California is a community property state so whatever earnings Rupert earned in California, half of that would automatically go to his wife when they divorce. The “more” than half would be through negotiations and deals secured by Liberty’s lawyer.

  6. Chicagogurl says:

She worked religiously up until having kids, then slowed down a bit to be a mom I assume. I wouldn’t be surprised if for the majority of their relationship SHE was the breadwinner and paid for most of the bills. She absolutely deserves half plus child support/alimony. It’s not so called “guilt money”. What a ridiculously sexist thing to say.

    • Ag says:

agreed. it’s money she’s earned by working and contributing to their life together. didn’t she put a hold on her career to move to CA for his career? i’m sure she’s paid her dues.

      • Chicagogurl says:

I get so utterly sick of these magazines portraying it as if the woman aren’t entitled to half and making it all about the money. Time and time again we see women who were with someone before they got famous or with someone just as famous as them and it always is portrayed as a money grab on the womans part. Ridiculous.

    • Wren33 says:

Exactly. Unless she managed to get her hands on more than half of some massive wealth he had prior to their marriage, I believe she is coming away with half of their assets. After 10 years, it really is hard to separate our whose money is whose. People move to support each other’s careers and their whole earning potential is massively affected by compromises in the marriage.

    • TG says:

I don’t think calling it “guilt money” is a sexist thing to say. I would gladly divorce my husband and give him every penny just to go away and assuage my guilt. I happen to be female but lots of men feel the same that is why they hand over the keys to the house and other funds so the woman will have something and they can go to bed with their latest piece and not feel guilty about dumping their wife. In my case their is no jump off. I just want my freedom and no more stress from having to support step-kids and him as well.

  7. Eleonor says:

    “Don’t get mad !!! Get everything !”

I’ve always wanted to say it.

    • bettyrose says:

LOL! Honestly, I get so weary of “wronged women” stories, so it’s a nice change to read about the women who pretty much get it all: the settlement, the new bf, and the relief of ditching the dbag they were married to.

  8. mimi says:

Honestly, I never heard of her before the cheating scandal. I only knew of Rupert through the Snow White movie. I had no idea who he was before that.

    • elinor says:

So what if you’ve never heard of Liberty before the scandal? How does that affect anything? Are you implying she did it for the publicity? Her line of work (modeling) doesn’t require her to be known by the public to be successful. Models only need to be “famous” to photographers, designers, fashion magazines and the likes.

      • mimi says:

        @elinor

        ????

I was only making an honest statement about not knowing who Liberty or Rupert were before the Snow White movie. Since she goes by her maiden name, I had no idea she was his wife until I saw photos of her with him during promo for the movie. I follow fashion very closely and recognize most of the famous models. However, Liberty didn’t ring a bell for me at all. Maybe she was more popular in the UK, perhaps?

      • One thing I never understood was when Liberty was being featured more (especially on CB), a few people started calling her a fameho, said she was milking sympathy, etc.

She was a pretty popular and successful model when she was young. And I’m pretty sure that the only thing that changed was the fact that more people knew who she was, versus the fact that she attended some fashion events–as always.

      • @mimi
She was popular in the nineties, in the UK. She basically quit (except for writing a few blog posts here and there for Vogue) to help her husband with his career. Because he was basically a nobody when they got together. I remember reading all of this when SWATH first came out. All of her model friends were dating billionaires, actors–while the photographers would cut him out (she called him ‘The Hand’) of pictures because he wasn’t famous.

That’s one of the reasons that really, really pissed me off about the whole thing–why I hate Rupert Sanders. His wife, who was making MONEY quit her job to help him with his directing career (because they moved to LA, and she was based in UK), and then he goes around and does something like this. And probably not the first time he did it either. He just got caught.

      • mimi says:

        @Virgilia Coriolanus

Thank you for the explanation and for being courteous. If she modeled in the 90s, that explains why I don’t know who she is. I didn’t follow fashion back then as closely as I do now.

  9. Patty Cake says:

I’m happy for her. Glad to see women that stand up to men in their relationship and don’t tolerate her man’s crap. Divorce was imminent after the affair. She could teach Tori a thing or two.

  10. Kelly says:

I’m guessing since she made off with that much money that it was MUCH MORE than a “momentary indiscretion”, lol. Hope that azz was worth it!

  11. QQ says:

In the Parlance of the early 00’s i believe this is called “Hit em up styles” and by all means Get It Shorty!

  12. Penelope says:

    Good for her.

  13. Sarah says:

its all about the power in hollywood. lots of people wanted to tell us that he was the evil man taking advantage of this young woman. but actually Kristen only would have had to snap her fingers and he wouldnt have found a job, she had a lot of power at that time and this was his first movie.
when it comes to other men in hollywood cheating they usually have more power and therefore are harder to get rid off. who is easier to get rid of? an A-List director or an aspiring actress? same here, the one time director was easy to get rid off then Kristen.

its also totally unprofessional to do this on your first movie. i doubt most hollywood powerplayers are mad about the cheating itself, if you only want to work with moral people you wont be able to make a movie there, but by him being so unprofessional and so disposable. he is not Spielberg exactly.

And lets not forget no one ever was caught so publicly. Jolie and Pitt had a huge scandal, but they were never actually caught cheating.

    • elinor says:

I agree. If the powers that be had to choose between Rupert and stew, they’d have to choose kstew just because of her massive popularity. On the other hand, they have to be extra careful in casting her and assess the risk because she has shown that she can be a publicity disaster. I’m sure Summit/Lionsgate panicked when the pics came out. I think it’s the first time in celebrity history that such a famous actress was caught in tons of pics making out with her married director, whose wife and kids she knew personally, in her own car and in a public park. It surely was shocking on several levels.

      • The only other time I’ve ever seen an affair play out publicly (between celebs) was with Katherine McPhee and that director guy AND Eddie/Leann. Other than that, it’s all ‘alleged’ stuff….

I think that’s what did them in. Not like he divorced his wife, she broke up with Rob and then they’re together (just before they have to promote the movie)….there was no doubt that they were cheating.

      • LAK says:

This is nothing compared to the Liz Taylor/Richard Burton/Debbie Reynolds/Sybil Burton fall out. The reason paps were became a thing.

  14. Kaboom says:

Half of the assets plus non-disclose money because he’d never work again if she spilled the beans.

    • HappyMom says:

Never work again because as a (married) director he slept with an actress? If that determined people’s careers in Hollywood, there would be very few people actually working.

      • Isadora says:

Yes, but most Hollywood indiscretions who don’t affect the parties involved happen between already established people. For example James Cameron can probably do what he wants. Rupert Sanders? He’s a nobody.

  15. Lyn says:

Hats off to Liberty Ross for staying classy all throughout the scandal. Good riddance of that scum ex husband. Kristen Stewart should take pointers from Liberty on how to be classy, true to self . Being pretentious and fake will get you nowhere, take note kstew.

  16. Cupcake says:

I’ve never noticed this before but I think Liberty looks like Elsa Pataky!! I feel like Liberty is really living up to her name 🙂 What what!!

  17. malina says:

re SHOCK: maybe it’s because the wife wasn’t old and unattractive (i.e. him cheating was her fault…) as well as Kirsten seems so young and immature, so altogether it truly appears that he wronged both women

  18. Zooyork says:

Good for her! What a pig he was doing that to the mother of his children.

  19. P.J. says:

“And here’s Liberty’s ultimate f-you to Rupert. Not only did she get more than half … she’s dating music mogul Jimmy Iovine, who according to Forbes is worth just a hair under 1 BILLION.”

I find this part of the piece beyond insulting not only as a woman who earns her own living, but you know, as someone who isn’t a gold digger. (I’m not at all implying that Liberty is because I don’t think that of her. But by saying what they did, obviously the author is strongly implying that he or she believes she is. I mean, what in the hell do the financial assets of a man that Liberty is dating have to do with her, much less her ex-husband?? In what way should the number of zeros in Iovine’s bank affect Rupert in any way?? It’s not her money!)

  20. catsnaps says:

I think Rupert’s career slowdown probably has more to do with the fact that The Huntsman was kind of a stinker…

  21. aquarius64 says:

Liberty got mad AND got even for Mini-Cooper-gate.

  22. starr says:

“Which is unusual in Hollywood – that the married man who carried on an affair with a young actress is the one who has been “punished.” SHOCK!”

    TRUTH! Go Liberty!!!

  23. MeganDraper65 says:

If Liberty ever talks… there’s so much more to the story.

  24. Ally8 says:

He’s probably not working because he damaged a multi-million dollar Hollywood franchise and the publicity-friendly relationship supporting it.

  25. Kosmos says:

I’m glad she decided to leave him after the scandal, and that she’s doing well. I thought the entire thing was such a bad choice for him, I still can’t believe he would give everything up for just a little fling with Kristen, wow. He can make more money and continue on with his life, but some mistakes can’t be corrected. She will be in a good place and she’s beautiful, has a modeling career and lots of connections, I’m sure….she’ll probably eventually marry again to someone who won’t cheat. The best thing about this is the way she so gracefully handled it all, so gotta hand it to her for being extremely classy.

  26. KierneM says:

So, does anyone remember Vicki Iovine, Jimmy’s wife? She wrote books about pregnancy and being a mom that were popular back in the ’90’s.
Sorry, but thats all I’ve got.
