Ed Sheeran claims Benedict Cumberbatch was going to dance in his music video

Ed Sheeran has a lengthy new interview with The Telegraph, which I’m only going to partially discuss. If you’re into Sheeran, have at it: you can read the full piece here. I do kind of like Sheeran – he seems like a nice guy, and while his lyrics aren’t always my cup of tea, I appreciate the fact that he’s a prolific songwriter, not just for himself but for many other artists as well. With Ed’s new album, he’s stepping out of his “English folk/acoustic” vibe and stepping into some Justin Timberlake-esque territory. Seriously, I heard Ed’s new single and I thought it was Timberlake:

Right? Anyway, funny story… Benedict Cumberbatch was supposed to star in that music video. At first, Ed tells The Telegraph that it’s definitely going to happen:

Finally, [Sheeran] presses “play” once more on Sing. “I’m gonna leave you with the single again, just in case you forget it…”

Job done. Now Sheeran pops down from stage for a chat. He tells me that Benedict Cumberbatch will be starring in the video for Sing, doing some hip hop dancing.

[From The Telegraph]

Interesting, right? The idea that Cumby could do some dancing in a music video? But no… it never happened:

That new video, starring hotter-than-hot Cumberbatch, also speaks of Sheeran’s bigger, bolder ambition. Alas, it is not to be.

“Man, the Cumberbatch thing,” he sighs “He was locked on for it, I had dinner with him twice. His UK agent said yes. Met up with him at the Oscars, he was well up for it. But his US agent just pulled him out last minute.”

Because it might besmirch his serious actor/leading man status? Sheeran says no, but it sounds like he means yes. “He’s a class actor. He’s the next Daniel Day Lewis in my opinion. He’s gonna be one of the greats, and the US agent’s argument was it’s not right for him right now. And to be honest: I kind of agree. But I thought that was the genius of it. It would be quite funny to have such a good actor in quite a funny role, doing hip hop dancing.”

[From The Telegraph]

I kind of agree with Ed… it would have been fun and silly and adorable to see Benedict dancing in a music video. And what would have been the harm in that? The fact that Benedict’s “American agent” pulled him out of it says that Benedict is really trying to plot out his career in serious fashion, unlike say, Matt Damon or Jon Hamm. Have you noticed that Matt and Jon will literally say “yes” to whatever they’re offered, no matter how silly or “bad for their image”? Which do you prefer?

There’s also a weird part in Ed’s interview where it seems like he’s ‘fessing up to a tortured relationship with Taylor Swift. Apparently, he wrote a song about “his brief sexual relationship with another A-list artist, and her subsequently betraying him with another pop star.” But Ed later says that it’s not about Taylor and how she maybe dumped him for Harry Styles. Which is too bad, because that fit perfectly. Ed sort of leaves it up in the air, but he doesn’t give a hard denial about whether the song is about Ellie Goulding. Huh.

Re: Sing sounding just like Timberlake: same. I say it every time.

Re: Cumbervideo… as much fun as it might have been I’m kind of glad it’s not happening. He’s so dorky, it would have been too Cumbercringey. Even though he is a good dancer.

    • Green Girl says:

I agree that this video would have been a bit too dorky and cross the line from “Haha, this is funny” to “Oh, dear, who thought this would be a good idea?”

      • J says:

I agree. As much as the fans would have loved it, I fear he is not well known enough in the US for this to be seen as a good thing. Don’t want to be known as “the oscar photobomb guy” and then “the Ed Sheeran video guy” and then show up next February wanting to be taken seriously to win an oscar for TIG.

      • SpookySpooks says:

I think it would have been great.
His desperate need to break the US is a bit annoying, to be honest.

      • Duri says:

I think it’s good he didn’t do it because people already give him shit for Oscar photobomb so imagine the verbal riots happening had he done this. Their comments would be similar to Spookyspooks here 😉

      • SpookySpooks says:

I like the Oscar photobomb, and I would have loved this. I don’t get the problem of being known in the US as the “dancing video guy”, especially when he’s huge in England.

      • Duri says:

Reading the comments here about that photobomb (which I personally loved), people would call him attention seeking, desperate to get the teens as his fans (cz that is Ed’s audience) and say he is doing this to be in headlines.

The thing is Hollywood is what will give him more money and work compared to UK’s industry. It’s every actors dream to make it in Hollywood and I won’t accuse him for having that ambition. Plus the roles he is doing are all very serious, so a little seriousness off-screen allows you to relate well especially when your audience might be completely new. As they say first impression can often be the last, so he first wants them to see his acting chops and then look at his humorous personality, dance moves etc.

        Just my theory 🙂

Hiddleston recites drunken Shakespears and Cumby dances to Ed Sheeran. Of course.

  3. LadyMTL says:

I think it would have been awesome and would have exposed Cumby to a whole host of potential new fans. I mean, I still love Christopher Walken in “Weapon of Choice” and even RDJ was in an Elton John video…Cumby’s agent needs to relax, lol.

  4. Claudia says:

He admitted by now on some radio show (I think) that it’s about Ellie Goulding. Taylor is just his BFF.

  5. Eleonor says:

Watching Christopher Walken dancing in the Fatboy Slim video was amazing!! I would have loved to see Cumby doing something like that.

I think the song’s about Ellie Goulding. She’s not really A-list though, is she?!

    • SpookySpooks says:

She’s huge in England. She’s much bigger than Taylor Swift in my country. I would call her A-list, definitely.

      • Lau says:

The other A-list star is definitely Ellie Goulding. Remember when they held hands during an award show last year? The song “Don’t” is about her betraying Ed with one member of One Direction (I think it was Niall). Juicy.

      • SpookySpooks says:

Wasn’t the other person her current boyfriend, Dougie Poynter from McFly?

  7. Claudia says:

Sing not only sounds like Timberlake, to me it is actually a rip off of Like I Love You. The guitar riff is so simiilar and the lyric “if you love me come on set the tone” (sing) vs. “If you smile then that should set the tone” (LILY)

Regarding Cumby: I love how Matt Damon is up for anything. It hasn’t hurt his career at all. I agree, Cumby’s agent (and he himself I guess) need to relax. Hip Hop Dancing, that would’ve been fun!

    • kayz says:

i think they were both produced by Pharrell. I guess he’s recycling the formula that worked for Justin?

    • Chameleon says:

Matt Damon has less of a chip on his shoulder than Cumberbatch.
Damon has hit it big with “Good Will Hunting” and then made several more first class movies which did well box-office-wise.
Cumberbatch hasn’t had that much big things yet although his acting career is certainly one of the finest I have seen.
I think part of the difference simply is good / bad luck. Cumby didn’t really have “bad luck” but he didn’t have the kind of good luck that propelled forward Matt Damon.

Also Cumby is a bit more geeky-dorky than Matt Damon and I think he might have a bit more trouble appealing to every man than Damon or Clooney or Pitt.

Seems like he tries not to make any mistakes right now but avoid them at all costs.
He will probably relax later so I am simply patient.

Also I am amused that nobody seems to give his “American Agent” any credit. Said agent probably is very competent and nows what he/she is doing and advising and I doubt he/she is a rookie.

    It would have been epic.

  9. Jen says:

I thought that “Sing” song was Justin too, but then I found out it was produced by The Neptunes (who did most of Justin’s first album) and it all made sense. Love it though.

  10. MissMary says:

I think it’s kind of funny BC’s US agent put the kibosh on it but his UK agent and PR was all about him doing it.

  11. EleanorRigby says:

I’m afraid the hilarity of this would have gone over most people’s heads, at least here in the States. Walken was an institution when he did the Fatboy Slim video, BC’s just not “there” yet. He needs to do SNL first, let people even know he’s funny. I think the US agent was right, actually. Sad for us, though.

    • Ally8 says:

Also, Walken is a trained dancer, who astounded everyone with how smooth he looked despite his age (though some moves were done by a double, clearly). That track also sounded very cool, unlike the lame pop Sheeran situation here.

I just don’t see Cumberbatch being convincing enough with hip-hop moves to compensate for the whole gangly white boy thing. People have been making fun of Vanilla Ice for 20 years or so, for goodness’ sake. I think the flower show tour was a goofy enough thing for Khan to do.

      Thanks, US agent!

    • Chameleon says:

I suspect that there might be a difference in British / American sense of humour.

  13. harry harrison says:

I’m so glad he didn’t do it. I hate Ed Sheeran, ugh.

  14. Allie says:

Pretty sure it was Ellie Goulding/Niall Horan. Ed and Harry are pretty close, I don’t think either one would do that to each other.
