Angelina Jolie opens the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict: amazing?

120529PCN_Angelina19

Here are some brand-new photos of Angelina Jolie and UK Foreign Secretary William Hague opening up their Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London today. Hague and Jolie have been BFFs for more than a year now, and Hague has cited Angelina’s work, both with the UN and her film In The Land of Blood and Honey, as one of his biggest eye-openers for the prevalence of sexual violence in war zones and conflicts. They have traveled together to bring attention to conflict zones where women are being (or have been) victimized. And now they’re co-hosting this summit together.

It seems weird to talk about fashion in this post, but it’s my job, so I’ll just say… I like Angelina in white. The white is so refreshing after her all-black uniforms and her Maleficent costumes/red carpet looks. That being said, I think I would have liked this better with a straight skirt and the jacket sleeves need to be less puffy. The suit is Michael Kors, by the way. She’s been wearing more Kors lately. Huh.

At the opening of the summit, Angelina and Hague both made speeches. Hague praised her, and Angelina dedicated the event to an unnamed and “abandoned” rape victim in Bosnia. She said in part:

“We must send a message around the world that there is no disgrace in being a survivor of sexual violence, that the shame is on the aggressor…. It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict. There is nothing inevitable about it. It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power. We live in safe countries with doctors we can go to when we’re hurt, police we can turn to when we’re wronged, and institutions that protect us. They live in refugee camps, on bombed-out streets, in areas where there is no law, no protection, and not even the hope of justice. We need to shatter that culture of impunity and make justice the norm, not the exception, for these crimes. We need political will replicated across the world and we need treat this subject as a priority.”

Word. And people wonder why I’m an Angeloonie. She’s amazing. I LOVE HER. She is my spirit animal. I’m including the video of her speech below.

She is beautiful, love the white. Just wish the jacket fit better.

    • kri says:

Okay, Kate Hudson-shit just got real. Stop flapping your trap about ARod and ass implants and maybe go help out on this topic. Thanks to AJ and anyone who is a voice for women who aren’t allowed to speak. Period. This is what celebrity and fame can do, and I am all for it.

    • Eleonor says:

I was thinking about the jacket too.
I like the skirt like that, if it was straigh it could have had the “hostess” vibe.

    • LadySlippers says:

My complaint is just that — I wish her jacket fit better.

      • Cecilia says:

hmmmm…the jacket is very ill-fitting. It looks sloppy.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Cecilia•

It does a bit, doesn’t it?

On the bright side, it’s a great reminder that she’s human and like us, isn’t always perfect.

    • LeahMommy says:

She dresses way too old for her age. This sort ill-fitting clothes should never be seen on a woman this gorgeous but at least she’s not wearing black.

      • Becks says:

It’s wonderful that she’s raisng awareness and helping other women, but good God, why does she dress like Dorothy Zbornak? Between the kitten heels and this frumpy suit, I just can’t!

      • Blossom says:

Why is her dressing more important than the cause? Smh especially for people like Cecilia who can’t help but make negative comments about AJ I guess it comes naturally to you
That’s the reason we woman hardly make progress we can’t just support each other fully without making snarky comments

      • Amanduh says:

@ Blossom: if you’re going to name names (why you feel you need to is beyond me…) but Cecilia was not the first nor the only to talk about her jacket and the fit…
Your “I guess it comes naturally to you” jab which is followed by your “women can’t support each other without snarky comments” made me laugh…
Good for Angelina for supporting this cause and bringing awareness to it. Celebrityism done right!!!

      • Rhiannionkk says:

Really, an ill-fitting jacket should not be the subject here. Bless her for her efforts.

    • Kim1 says:

Yeah because her Ill fitting jacket is more important than ending sexual violence. Thanks to The Pope for tweeting support for this cause #TimetoAct

      • Chris says:

The Pope twote? Far out. Srsly, good for him, it’s a start at least.

      • eva says:

        @ Chris

The Pope twote? Far out. Srsly, good for him, it’s a start at least.

I have never heard the word twote before, but I love it.

I agree, today is not the day to pick apart what she’s wearing, she’s dressed to be taken seriously, if she’d turned up looking too perfect she’s be ripped apart for making it all about her.

      • Chris says:

        Eva hi
I don’t do da tweeting thing myself, not sure of the lingo. Wild guess. I hope ‘twote’ isn’t rude in any language spoken here. 😉

    • The Original G says:

I think she’s dressed like all those corporate, World Court/Bank international administrator lady types. Good for her for not upstaging these events with fashion.

      • Samtha says:

        Exactly.

      • Sullivan says:

The voice of reason. She dressed like that so no one would focus on her clothes instead of the issue. She tries to downplay her looks, but really, there’s no hiding that exquisite face.

      • Dawn says:

Well said and so right. She puts the cause in front of her fashion choice. and that’s a good thing.

      • phlyfiremama says:

        Bingo. Well said~

      • Mari says:

My thoughts exactly; she should not upstage the cause. I’m also thinking she should give some lessons on public speaking to Duchess Kate. Really good speech.

      • Olenna says:

Ditto. Angie knows where the focus should be, and it’s not about her wardrobe.

    • Lahdidahbaby says:

I love the suit, and I think she looks great, though maybe the jacket could stand to be tailored slightly to fit her body better. A straight skirt might look better on most women, but I think not so much on Angelina’s body-type. I have a similar shape to her skinny straight-up-and-down figure, and I think a straight skirt wouldn’t have looked nearly this nice. This is a wonderful look for Angelina (the white is especially lovely on her). I wish she would wear more flared skirts. I long ago gave up on pencil skirts because I think they make me look like a sausage link.

  2. Duri says:

she looks stunning, maybe her best look this year.

Also glad she is raising awareness on such important issues. Wish more celebrities followed her suit.

  3. Hissyfit says:

She’s beyond amazing! And she looks great!

    • Andrea1 says:

True! There are no words to describe Angie! The woman is just too much

      • ArtHistorian says:

Truly amazing! A great role model and a woman with her heart in the right place and the moxie to go out and try to change things. I really feel that her humanitarian work will be her true legacy.

  4. HH says:

Superficial first: Her makeup is beautiful! I love the fresh faced, “dewey” look. Beyonce’s makeup artist is very good at that as well.

Important stuff: I’m so glad she’s bringing a spotlight to this cause. She uses her celebrity appropriately. She gives her time, but knows that’s the publicity her name brings also has great value.

  5. cro-girl says:

This is something dear to me, especially what went on in Bosnia in the 90’s where rape warfare was part of genocidal procedures designed by Serb aggressors. The stats and stories are staggering.

    Bless this woman.

    • MoxyLady007 says:

I adore her. Whenever I read an article about Duchess Kate I think- you could be doing this too. Please. Be like the Jolie.

  6. Melymori says:

I finally watched “The Land of Blood and Honey” over the weekend. Great movie, powerfull message, and to be honest all each flaw that the “Angelina Haters” -lol- point, she has 100 good qualities. Yeah she might’ve started a relationship with a married man. She wronged ONE woman, but she’s help hundreads if not thousand more with all her humanitarian work.

Also it’s been a long time since that, and Brad and Ang are still together.

    • I STILL remember when half of this site was convinced that she was either making a movie about how a Bosnian rape victim fell in love with her rapist (which I never understood, because I don’t think that would’ve flew with ALL local cast members), or that she was going to make a sanctimonious piece of crap……….

But I liked the movie when I saw it–on netflix. Hard to watch though.

    • Rose says:

      The movie is so-so
      Her Direction is quite good
The script is a mess. Awful. You cant do a good movie with a bad script.
In the end the movie is more a work of an activist rather then an artist. Nothing wrong with that, but if she wants to be recognsided as a decent director she must understand the diference between makeing a movie with activist intentions and a movie with artistic purposes.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Rose•

I’m not sure why writers aren’t worshiped because good writing is the foundation of any play/film/TV show. If you have decent writing, you at least have good material to work with. Even the best directors/producers/actors/actresses cannot lift a crappy script much.

      • Algernon says:

        @LadySlippers

Good directors/editors lift bad scripts all the time. Even merely mediocre filmmakers can make a bad script tolerable. I agree that it starts with good writing and every great movie has a great script as its foundation, but there’s a reason screenplays aren’t widely published (in comparison to play scripts, I know screenplays *do* get published sometimes). It’s because the vast majority of them are bad. And because you can take a so-so script, walk on set the day of shooting, rewrite on the spot, and come out with something incredible. Just look at Apocalypse Now.

ETA: Because of the sharp increase in quality TV over the last 15 years, screenwriters are finally being given more time/attention by producers and studios and they are starting to invest in better scripts. I have noticed the overall quality of working screenwriters in film is going up.

      • eva says:

ITLOBAH, was probably a bit of both.

      • I thought the script was okay–it wasn’t awful. But I guess her point was to educate–I understood most of the movie, and I hadn’t ever really heard of what happened in Bosnia, beyond the paragraph that you read in your history textbook.

But hopefully she’ll be better with something that isn’t so serious—it’s a fine line, I think, with historical/message films that you don’t end up coming off as sounding like a teacher. Especially when you’re trying to educate, but a lot of people (at least for me, in America) don’t understand the conflict that they’re watching. If she’d done a WWII movie, she wouldn’t have had such a battle.

      • Jayna says:

Angie wrote the script, so probably why lacking since she was a first-time screenplay writer.

    • Andrea1 says:

      @melymori word!!!!

  7. AryaMartell says:

Yeah, Angelina! This is such an important issie. I’m glad she takes her special ambassador job so seriously. Most celebs just make a few appearances, kiss babies and superficially talk about an important issue and then get to use the title of being a UN special ambassador forever (looking at you…Charlize Theron). But not Angie. I honestly think she is more into being a special ambassador than being an actress at this point.

    • Greata says:

      This!

    • Andrea1 says:

      +1000000000

    • lucy2 says:

There are some celebs who just show up for the good PR, or ask for big paydays to appear at fundraisers. However, Charlize Theron has been very active in the fight against HIV/AIDS with UNAIDS, especially in South Africa, for a long time.

Rather than compare, let’s be glad that there are those out there giving their time and energy to worthy causes. And in this case, especially Angelina, who has proven that she’s very dedicated to this cause and personally involved.

      • I was actually surprised to see that Mira Sorvino does a lot of the work that Angelina does–it was a few months ago, while researching for a paper about modern day slavery, that I came across her work…..she was interviewed/in Thailand (I think) working with sexual abuse victims, etc. Made me respect her a lot more–I always wrote her off as an airhead who won her Oscar on a fluke.

      • lucy2 says:

That’s really interesting to know – she’s often mentioned in a “whatever happened to” kind of way, but maybe she found her calling through that kind of work instead of acting.
I’m reading the piece she wrote for CNN now.

      • AryaMartell says:

Yeah but isn’t Charlize one of the people who asks for a huge payday and has a huge rider with a list of demands?
I’ll be honest, I’ve always been a bit leery of Charlize and I personally don’t find her to be overly trustworthy but that’s my opinion, if you are a fan of hers more power to you. The way the whole story of how her mother killed her father was publicized during her Oscar campaign in 2003 kind of disgusted me. It’s a terrible thing that happened and if it happened the way she describes then he got what was coming but I think it’s one of those stories that shouldn’t really be used for publicity and it never sat well with me that she was so okay using it as such. Plus she always seems to avoid any discussion of growing up in late apartheid SA. I can’t say I follow her overly closely though. She just always seems to come off as a wannabe-Angelina to me.

      • Moore says:

She very rarely talks about her fathers death. And when she does she is brief and matter a fact.
Do you have links for her lists of demands while doing charity work? I didn’t find it on Smoking Gun.

      • AryaMartell says:

I wasn’t sure, that’s why I was asking. I was seeing if anyone heard similar rumors. I was also discussing the way it was publicized during her Monster win. I just gave my opinion no need to defend her, I get that she has fans, I respect that. Chill, Moore.

      • lenje says:

Also, don’t forget Shakira who started her Barefoot Foundation at the age of 18, and is still quite hands on in her education projects.

  8. Dame Snarkweek says:

Clooney will be on ebay tonight looking for global summits. AJ is awesome.

    • Greata says:

      This!

    • Madi says:

You may get a surprise. The summit is for 4 days and Amal is on Willy’s panel and has been for at least 18 months. I suppose though if she turned up tomorrow or in the next few days, everyone will rip her to shreds for being a pap hungry famewhore

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

The comment was about George.he was self-righteous long before he snagged his fiancee.

    • Lucretia says:

Thanks for the link, @LadySlippers. Those myths need to be understood — by both girls/women and boys/men.

I just commented about on another thread about not being able to get past Damian Lewis as Soames Forsyte (and his relationship to Irene) in considering him as a sympathetic romantic lead.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Lucretia•

Myths of ALL kinds need to be smashed. So you’re ever so welcome.

If the post’s comments remain civil, I try to do the same for domestic abuse. If it gets nasty — I’m off to the hills because I dealt with nastiness enough in my personal life, I have NO wish to do it in public.

(FYI I’m both a domestic abuse survivor and a incest survivor)

      • Lucretia says:

        *LadySlippers*

I hope you don’t need to run for the hills, especially since you’ve the courage to speak truth and share honestly. But if you run, I’ll be standing behind you providing cover.

(I’m new to posting on here, and mostly enjoy the pithy snark of many smart women, so thanks for replying.)

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Lucretia•

This post will probably stay very civil but other posts don’t always stay with way.

And WELCOME! It’s always fun and exciting to see new people. The smart conversations are really fantastic here. It’s why I keep coming back!!! The snark is, indeed, glorious! 😎

      • Amanduh says:

Sending positive thoughts your way, Ladyslippers! I’ve read your comments and you’re nothing but pure class and ever so gracious!!

      • Cecilia says:

*BIG HUG* to you, Lady Slippers.

  9. bisolar says:

    Awesome woman!

  10. The Original Mia says:

She looks good, but I’m not feeling that jacket.

Comparing her comments those with that ass, George Will’s comments on the campus rape epidemic,it’ s a damn shame the evil that men do to women in the name of what they feel is their right. Grr…SMH!

  11. Helvetica says:

    Her beautiful face.

    • Chris says:

oh, indeed. Wilde said beauty is another form of genius (probably more elegantly) and looking at this face I think I know what he meant.

  12. umyeah says:

I hope other celebs figure this out. That there’s more to life than wearing the latest fashions, buying the most extravagant things, living in mcmansions and taking selfies all day. If celebrities took to their social media accounts and talked about some of the stuff that was going on around the world, instead of living in their self indulgent bubbles, some of their followers might do something more worthy than trying to put on the best duckface.

  13. Lau says:

God, I thought it wasn’t possible to adore her any more than I already did. Truth is – it is possible.

  14. poppy says:

she is the textbook example of what to do with your fame, how to use it.
love her or hate her, she sets the bar nice and high for other celebrities.

  15. Chris says:

Utterly compelling, I am lost in admiration.

  16. Jedi says:

Can you imagine how much she will accomplish if she continues for the next 30 or 40 years? this woman will be on the path to winning a nobel peace prize (and will deserve it far more than some more recent recepients). her work truly is inspiring.

    • LadyS says:

I just saw your comment right after writing mine below. I agree. She’s going to win it and will have earned it completely unlike some other people. She consistently puts her image and her body on the line in her fight for peace. I love her!

      • Jedi says:

Haha the angie threads get long, thats for sure 🙂 but yes, we are totally on the same page, i really do think she will get it some day.

      • Jedi says:

Haha the angie threads get long, thats for sure 🙂 but yes, we are totally on the same page, i really do think she will get it some day.

    • taxi says:

And she’ll donate the prize money to charity when she does!

  17. phlyfiremama says:

I do not know how I could possible love what this woman does with her life any more. She is, truly, the total package~intelligent, beautiful, educated, philanthropic, accomplished. Viva La Jolie!!

  18. db says:

Love AJ but that outfit is killing me. I appreciate a good mumsy look as much as anyone, and it would appropriate here, but this is Ill-fitting, pulling at the boobies, appear to be different weight fabrics, one too heavy the other too light — bah.

    • delighted says:

Love the outfit. The skirt is perfect, the jacket goes great with it. Love the color.

  19. Rose says:

She looks like someone who has more then 40 years.

  20. lower-case deb says:

Dr Denis Mukwege speaking to BBC News Service about his patients who are rape victims/survivors, the youngest of whom was 6 MONTHS old when he treated her.
    https://m.soundcloud.com/bbc-world-service/sexual-violence-in-conflict-is-a-problem-of-our-common-humanity

skimming quickly through the liveblogs, some observers are concerned about the Africa-skewed content of the Summit. but i think that if this Summit proves to be productive, it can be expanded to address problems in more regions.

  21. MrsBPitt says:

    I bow to Angelina….

  22. ladyballz says:

Ha! Got a spray tan for a Global Summit. Actors are a weird weird breed.

    • Candy Love says:

Did you watch the video? Because if you did you would see that she dosen’t have a tan.

    • Shantal says:

She’s a “weird weird breed” for allegedly getting a spray tan? Right….because average women never get spray tans. What a stupid comment.

    • lisa2 says:

She and Brad were in MALTA (Mediterranean Sea on Sunday/ walking around in the SUN so she got some sun over the weekend while they were reportedly scouting locations for a film. She was wearing a hat.. but I guess bad for her she got some sun. Beside that she lives in LA.

why is it necessary to find this tiny thing to demean what she is doing. It summer time. Most people have more color now..

Don’t get it at all. Even is she did get a spray tan.. So What.

    • phlyfiremama says:

One of the reasons she has such incredible skin is that she DOESN’T expose her face to the sun. I worked with an esthetician in my first office, she REALLY taught me a lot about skincare and the #1 thing you can do to take care of your skin is to NOT get a suntan~ALWAYS wear at least an SPF 30, your skin will thank you in the coming decades!

  23. Wilma says:

Really good speech. I absolutely love her and what she does with her starpower. It’s great that AJ has been pushing this subject more and more. It is needed.

    • Chris says:

I was really delighted by the upbeat closing words and her broad smile. For me, that exposed true commitment and her sincere hopes for the conference…. not that I doubted, but some do! A faker would, surely, have looked very solemn.

  24. Fan says:

It’s the message that she is telling us that is important. I admire both her beauty and wisdom.

  25. Chris says:

As an aside, it’s extraordinary to me to find that her working with Wm Hague gives him MORE gravitas than he ever had, just in my own opinion. It’s usually the other way around, a star cleaving to a politician for that quality. That isn’t in any way a crit of Hague, but a stunned reaction to Angelina’s power. Altogether inspirational, and good on Hague who really is committed.
    Phew! Sorry for gushing.

    • zut alors! says:

I LOVE that he gives her a lot of credit for this summit. He is so very respectful towards her and that makes me happy.

  26. Shelby says:

And this is how celebrities must use their star powers. It’s no wonder that she is the most influential movie star today.

  27. Paige says:

Angie doing what she does best. I do love her in white.

  28. lrm says:

Not to disappoint, but she likely didn’t write her speech. None of the UN or global ambassadors do. They are spokesmen. They represents the message and add influence and attention through their popularity and fame. Obviously, Jolie agrees with what she’s been asked to say, but ppl seem to think she is in charge of the event or authors the speeches. She’s more of an actor than director in her UN and other intnl roles. Except for those projects she and pitt founded.

    • lower-case deb says:

perhaps so (even though she said that she did write these speeches herself, not to long ago; although of course observers may opt to take her word with a few shakers of Salt).

however, scripted speeches aside, i think her eloquence during interviews (either in her capacity as a special envoy or as an artist, or even as a mother and partner) shows that she has a lot of passion for the subjects at hand, and she’s at least well-informed to a certain level, and does a good job at representing the cause.

      an example:
      http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/video/2014/jun/10/angelina-jolie-prosecutions-prevent-future-sexual-violence-in-conflict

out of the two, i think AJ is the one who answers the question posited with more clarity, imho.
which WH quickly jumps on and make her answers his too.

    • lenje says:

I agree that most probably someone else wrote the message, probably in the UK Commonwealth and Foreign Office. It doesn’t mean she cannot speak eloquently.

I should, however, convey my utmost respect to her for taking part actively in this very important effort. She is definitely the most visible person (because of her fame). I hope that this will also be an opportunity for other activists in this issue to get their recognition as well.

  29. Hideyocomments says:

She was dressed in an understated manner, hoping not to draw attention away from the matters at hand. I like the fact that she might have an ill fitting jacket, as so many pointed out. She probably got the smallest size available, which still didn’t fit, but doesn’t care enough to have it tailored. She’s got more important issues to deal with, and making sure her jacket fits
“properly” or whatever that means, is not one of them.

This woman has multiple priorities; family, work, humanitarian issues… damn she makes me tired just thinking about one week of her life. Much to admire with the Jolie!

  30. lovecamaro says:

Charlize Theron should be attending this summit. That idiot needs to learn what rape really means and the effects of it on the real victims.

So Jolie is hosting the biggest summit to end sexual violence in conflict and the first thing people are asking is why her blazer jacket doesn’t fit? Like, what the hell?

What she’s doing is really great. She’s one of the few celebrities out there who walks the talk. I hope this event will be successful and I hope that this is a start for officials to take action and help end the sexual war crimes.

    • Hideyocomments says:

      word

    • eva says:

      Exactly!

    • Paige says:

I didn’t even think of that but good point. Some can only focus on her clothing but haven’t said anything about the bigger picture here which is the Global Summit and what Angelina is doing. I worry about her fashion when she’s walking the red carpet not when she’s doing humanitarian efforts. She could be wearing a duffel bag during these events, I wouldn’t care because it isn’t about her clothes but to bring awareness.

      • Chris says:

        Moore hi
Theron followed in the footsteps of many stars and moaned that media intrusion/paps was rilly rape. You’d hope someone keen to prove their right-on credentials would never even have the comparison in her file of similes. Ever. AJ and this conference with its high visibilty will have a domestic success re rape too, if it is agreed that the only thing like rape is the thing itself.
I know I am ranting, but you meet educated women who excuse using the comparison ‘because Alexander Pope did’ . Fuckitt. Tabu. We must never dilute the meaning of ‘rape’ because it softens the perception of the crime. Rapists go free.
So, Charlize, do not collude with this.

    • Moore says:

Why did you mention Charlize Theron. Is there something I don’t know about her and rape?

  31. allheavens says:

    Brava, Jolie!

She most definitely walks the talk. I think she will continue her humanitarian works for many years to come. I wish more celebrities actually WORKED to shed light on the atrocities that go on daily around the world and not pay lip service to causes for PR purposes only.

I think she looks wonderful, good works does a body good.

  32. LadyS says:

She’s going to win the Nobel Peace Prize one day. I just know it. She’s more than earned it at this point!

I will say it every time……….so bizarre that we need movie stars to draw attention to these things. Our culture is so screwed up.

    • Cecilia says:

I agree with you. I read, on a blog, that 3,000 women showed up in Glasgow to march against rape a couple of days ago & it got barely a mention. I wish all these wonderful people luck. I am not sure what will be effective in ending wartime rape…or any rape for that matter. Let’s end the wars too while we’re at it.

    • LadyS says:

It does suck that normal people fighting for these problems get no mention, but at least we have a movie star that understands the power of her influence and how it can be used for good. What Angelina does is refreshing because she could just sit around all day vacationing, opening lifestyle websites, and complaining about paps and her oh-so-bad privileged life. She’s an aid to a big cause and none of the normal people would ever reject any help she might offer as long as it gets the job done.

      • lisa2 says:

Why would the “normal people ” doing this be highlighted on a Celebrity Gossip site. The Normal people are being discussed I would assume on other sites and places. Angelina is a celebrity so that is why it is being featured here. That fact in no way says she is more important than “normal people”..

      • LadyS says:

I never said she was more important. I meant that she is a resource normal people who care about their cause would never refuse to ignore. I do PR for nonprofits and, let me tell you, there is ALWAYS interest in getting someone famous involved if possible. It’s just how the ball rolls, unfortunately. Also, if you read the post before mine carefully, you would have noticed that the 3000 women who marched in Glasgow barely got a mention around the Internet. That was the main point of the first comment. Angelina’s visit to the summit is being talked about everywhere, these normal people barely. That is why, I reiterate, it is essential that celebrities with powerful influence get involved in these causes. They get talked about and the causes get news coverage. Win-win all around.

      • hmmm says:

In a way, though, the rise of movie stars as reps seems to take away or diminish the voices of others. 3000 women marched yet remain voiceless and unsung. Stick a glamour puss front and centre and suddenly people listen? So much for the cause.

I love this woman so much. She is so inspirational. I don’t give a crap about her past. I care about her present, and she’s doing a spectacular job to help women and children worldwide. This woman is using her fame the RIGHT way. Not bitching about it and using it to highlight serious issues that need attention.

  35. Anne tommy says:

I don’t really like her but I do admire her, both for this sort of activity and for handling her own serious illness in a classy way. She is of course also gorgeous, if rather skinny.

  36. Mrs. Cleaver's beaver says:

God, this woman is gorgeous! Her skin is incredible as well.

  37. Suzanneg444 says:

She either looks like an ex con who got dressed up for night with all tattoos glaring out from under the garb….or she dresses like a nun in the 80’s when they were allowed to wear street clothes. Her taste in clothes SUCKS. She’s either black…no jewelry or she’s in some other solid blah looking outfit like this one. WHITE…no makeup other than greasy shine and no lip color.
Was her goal here to look professional? EPIC FAIL, if it was. Her and Brad make a great pair of poorly styled celebs. He always looks like he just fell out of the laundry basket….and she looks like she got dressed half way and the car arrived to pick her up before she finished dressing! Sorry but with all their money….neither has ANY fashion sense AT ALL.

    • LadyS says:

Or…maybe, fashion isn’t that important when you’re actually trying to make a difference in the world. Anyway, doesn’t seem like the rest of the world cares much about what she or Brad Pitt wear, seeing as how they’re two of the biggest stars on the planet right now. I don’t know. Just thinking aloud.

    • allheavens says:

      @Suzanneg444

Baby you need to take a Xanax and calm the hell down. This isn’t about styling it is about violence against women around the world. THAT is the focus of the summit not what the hell Jolie or her husband wears.

    • Sullivan says:

Way to focus on the important stuff, Suzanne! Thanks for the peek into your mind.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

Fair enough, everyone has a different opinion.

Personally I like her (usually) minimalist, chic aesthetic (this outfit, not so much). I can see however that that is not to everybody’s taste. Style and taste are all a matter of opinion, and if we all liked the same things it would be a boring world indeed.

  38. Jayna says:

She bores me with such compassion and intellect and making a difference in this world while being a mom and wife and having a career and not whining. I need deep Gwyneth Paltrow talking about how hard it is for her to be a movie star and mom compared to us peasants and discussing her stripper’s ass and, during the breakup of her marriage, writing a very deep and riveting blog about how negativity affects the water. Now, that’s someone to admire. She’s older than Angelina so more evolved.

  39. LaurieH says:

I really admire her. She is one of the few Hollywood celebrities that really walks the walk, instead of just throwing money at a problem in the hopes of a free photo op. Okay, so I don’t admire her for getting involved with a married man (Brad Pitt) but it takes two to tango, Brad’s marriage was alredy strained and love is quite often inoportune. At least we can see, after 10 years, that it was a good match and not just some gratuitous on-set fling. I literally have no doubt that she deeply passionate about these issues because she gives them her most precious commodity: her time.

  40. moo says:

Well, good golly!!! Let’s hope they mention, and can help out on, all the sexual violence happening right now in Egypt!!! Women are being beaten and raped and abused in public and these beasts are even threatening the POLICE who are trying to help them!! And over a political vote, no less!!!

    • Chris says:

And elsewhere women are being burned alive, stoned to death, hanged….by their own families, for the crime of womanhood.
The conference is about war crimes, and will not heal all wounds. Hatred of women is everywhere. To any famous songbird who declares herself ‘bored by feminism’ I’d say ‘Lana, the fight is still in its first round, so get a bloody grip’.

  41. Ravensdaughter says:

She’s all in white! I’m just not used to it.
Angelina is my hero! Forget Brad Pitt, I want her connections (William Hague is her BFF) and her appointment (Special Envoy to the UNHCR)!

  42. Camille (The Original) says:

I don’t like the outfit that much, I wish that she had a pencil skirt on instead. And whats up with her makeup, in that video it looks terrible.

With the negatives out of the way, she’s awesome and she’s a great public speaker. So articulate.

  43. zut alors! says:

My admiration and appreciation for Ms. Jolie grows stronger with the way she uses her fame, resources and TIME to advocate for those without a voice. Even in the face of criticism and skepticism, she perseveres on.

On a shallow note, I would LOVE to take a peek at her Rolodex. Can you imagine the contacts she must have?

  44. A.Key says:

What are her qualifications for working for the UN? People work their butts off to get the positions such as hers, postgraduate degrees, rigorous elimination process, relevant work experience—and still only a few manage to climb so high in the UN.
And what does she do? She drops out of high school and takes her clothes off in front of the camera. Wow, really relevant to be employed for the UN. I guess people who actually are qualified in the field should take a different approach.

  45. DrFunkenstein says:

Admirable, but pointless. The dispensation of civilized behavior is the very essence of warfare. You can forget attempting to regulate ANY behavior during wartime.
