Melanie Griffith covers Antonio tattoo with makeup: good for her or why bother?

When going through a divorce, most people just take off their wedding ring as a symbol that they’re over it. If you have a tattoo for that person, who do you do though? Do you ignore it, do you get it lasered off, do you simply make sure it’s covered by clothes, or do you try to cover it up with makeup? Melanie Griffith did the latter while at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily, Italy yesterday. She wore a sleeveless dress and put makeup over the “Antonio” heart tattoo on her upper right arm. Melanie covered just the name, so it’s pretty obvious that she’s trying to erase “Antonio” and not the entire tattoo. Here’s a close up view of her arm.

I don’t know, it seems a little too deliberate for me. Why not just cover the entire tattoo with makeup and not be so obvious about it? Or she could do it hardcore like Angelina Jolie and get the thing lasered off and eventually replaced by something more relevant and meaningful to her. Melanie has had that tattoo since 1998. Antonio Banderas and Melanie announced their divorce nearly two weeks ago.

Have you ever seen Tattoo Nightmares? It’s a Spike TV reality-type show where people get their crappy tattoos covered up by one of three tattoo artists. It’s highly entertaining, particularly when they recreate the ridiculous and entertaining scenarios in which people got their terrible tattoos in the first place. (Drunk, on a dare, by a lady they met at a hair salon who was half blind.) Melanie would be a good candidate for that show. One of those talented tattooists could cover that thing right up with a beautiful landscape or a picture of an owl or something. She wouldn’t have to just Dermablend over the name.

In terms of Melanie’s fashion, she’s wearing a dress with an actual leopard face on the bodice, with repeating leopard mouths and rockets across the bottom. On its own, on the rack, I would say this dress is fug. On Melanie it looks badass though, I don’t know why. Did you know that Melanie grew up with exotic animals like lions, tigers and elephants? I tried to google to find a designer ID on this dress and I found this article from People, from 1984. Melanie’s mom is actress Tippi Hendren (The Birds), who remarried film producer Noel Marshall (The Exorcist). On their estate was “a small menagerie.”

Here’s a photo of Melanie’s tattoo from June 5, just a day before she announced her split. I wonder if she was tempted to cover it back then too.

Wow, the makeup looks terrible. Bad idea. A little cardigan — or maybe dresses with sleeves — would be a better bet until she can get those laser treatments.

    • Erinn says:

I’d even say, try to cover the wholeeee thing with makeup. It looks pretty silly to just blur out his name.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And clears up the spots on her arm under the tattoo. Unfortunately, all that sun damage will never go away.

    • Barbiegirl says:

Cardigan in Taormina?!? In June?!?? She could only go sleeveless… It’s way too hot in Sicily in Summer…

    • Lady Macbeth ex Hiddles F. says:

I would have covered the whole of her with makeup…. :/
In Sicily it’s probably 40 degrees Celsius at this time of the year, nobody would have worn a cardigan………..

      • Byte Me says:

I think trying to cover up that big thing with a glob of makeup would make it look worse than it does now.

    • JenniferJustice says:

It seems she wants people to see the tat w/the name covered up. It’s a statement.

      • Pepsi Presents...Coke says:

        Definitely.

      • TrustMOnThis says:

Agreed. Remember Liberty Ross with her big cross necklace coming out of her attorney’s office? I think both were great visual statements.

    • Esmom says:

Sorry, people, I wasn’t thinking about temperatures when I made that comment. (It’s 90-plus degrees here in Chicago but I still brought a cardigan to a meeting because I knew it would be freezing inside, and it was.)

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Here’s an idea. Don’t get a tattoo.

    • GMarchetti says:

      Agree.

Especially if you’re an actor. They have to cover it in most movies, and it always looks awful.

I wonder if people who get tattoos think what it’s going to look like when they’re in their 70s, 80s?

      • Ellie66 says:

I’ve seen people in their 70s and 80s and their tattoos don’t look bad, depends where u get them done if it’s a boob then yep there’s gonna be sagging but hey at that age who cares! Lol!

      • Happyhat says:

I’d say – don’t get tattoos of lover’s names. It can never bode well. Other than that, go crazy. A shitty-looking tattoo is the least of your problems when you’re 70-80; I’ll never know why that’s supposed to be a deterrent.

      • Artemis says:

I wonder if people who get tattoos think what it’s going to look like when they’re in their 70s, 80s?

Like the rest of the body: wrinkly. Telling a story. Part of your past, present and future. I will say: wow look at these beautiful wrinkly tattoos on my beautiful wrinkly body! Body acceptance in every way.

EDIT to add: agree with above posters too. At that age, I suspect most have other things on their mind than worry about how tattoos look.

      • elo says:

+1 Artemis! I will be sitting around all tattooed and wrinkly reveling in what a hot, young, ner do well I was.

      • Ginger says:

I have a 23 year old ankle tattoo that is still beautiful today. If you choose a great tattoo artist that does quality work it will look good for the rest of your life.

      • Agree with Good Names All Taken. My days working in the ICU taught me that I do not ever, EVER want a tattoo. Especially….”down there”. You just never know.

    • Solanaceae says:

Agree… never understood the tendency to tattoo people’s name (bf, husbands, etc) on your body… It’s like saying “I’m your property”?

    • Tanguerita says:

God bless her, but Melanie has never had half the class of her mother. She’s always been pretty trashy.

      • taxi says:

Considering the array of unwholesome life experiences Melanie had, starting as a pre-teen, I don’t think Tippi exercised good parenting judgment or skills. Tippi was always a beauty though and she has been more restrained with her plastic surgeries.

      • Pepsi Presents...Coke says:

Must agree with taxi on that one. Some people believe in allowing their fourteen-year-old daughters move in with their 22-year-old boyfriends. Tippi was one of those people and I am not. Why wasn’t this little girl to stay with her parents? Did they have something better to do?

    • kri says:

She should have put a big X over it in black eyeliner.

  3. Luca26 says:

It seems like she just really wants some attention after a decade of being irrelevant in the media. So god bless her but I’m rolling my eyes.

  4. Loopy says:

It should be made illegal to tattoo anyone that is clearly under some influence.

  5. lucy2 says:

The makeup over the name seems passive aggressive. She should get it lasered off, and in the meantime, wear sleeves.
Her mom has had an actual animal sanctuary for a long time now I think.

  6. MrsBPitt says:

I predict that we find out Antonio has gotten some 20 something pregnant!!!! Melanie put up with a lot of crap from him for years (if rumors are to be believed), so, I’m thinking it has to be something really big for her to divorce him now! Of course, I’m sure she wasn’t the easiest to live with either. I know she has had her addictions and she seems really insecure.

  7. Maria says:

Her face is far more distracting than her makeup covered tattoo…

I do agree she’s rocking that dress 😉

  8. Kiddo says:

I like her, but she looks terrible in the photos. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is, the colors, the make-up, hair. etc.

    • chaine says:

bridge of her nose is collapsing. idk why i never noticed it before these pix.

    • Esmom says:

I was thinking the same exact thing. Her hair is an odd peach shade, so artificial looking. And her face looks even more jacked. Throw in the sedated-looking facial expressions and it all adds up to a fairly unattractive whole, sadly.

  9. elo says:

14 years is a relatively long time to stay together, especially in Hollywood. They have a daughter and have shared a life for a long time, she may be mad but if I were her I doubt I would cover it or remove it. I doubt she does either.

  10. Momoftwo says:

She’s the same age as Michelle pfeifer and Sharon stone.. She looks sooooo much older. It must be more than the plastic surgery. Cigarettes? Alcohol? I always feel kind of sad when I see her

    • Froggy says:

      Same.
She is also a warning to young girls on how ridiculous tats look when you get older.
I have 3 but they are in places you can’t see them unless you know me intimately and seeing her makes me thankful for that.

    • Mel M says:

Yeah, she looks very grandma in these pics.

    • Petee says:

Smoking and sun damage. That’s why her skin looks the way it does.

    • Artemis says:

She’s had a rough life. Addiction catches up at a certain age (see Tom Hardy and Colin Farrell). I know Tippi aged well but MG might not have that part of her genes. And she smokes…

Also, people are not meant to look young-ish forever, women who do are an exception due to amazing genes or have a very healthy lifestyle from a young age. Or like Sharon Stone, have subtle maybe non-invasive treatments (let’s not kid ourselves). Plus not wearing sunscreen does so much damage which is what people realise when it’s too late!

  11. eliza says:

If you are going to bother at all, use Dermablend Professional, the cover up they used for the video of Rick Genest which was awesome to watch.

Her cover up looks ridiculous and for goodness sake, just cover the whole thing. We know your pissed. We know you are divorcing and so does Antonio. The bad job just makes you look childish.

    • GiGi says:

I love that video! My 4 year old was watching it over my husband’s shoulder and said, “Oh! He’s a zombie!”

And I agree with others upthread… this looks just sad and passive aggressive.

      • eliza says:

I adore Rick Genest. I find him very goodlooking both covered in his signature tats or in Dermablend. He is my guilty pleasure to look at.

        That video is truly awesome.

  12. Eleonor says:

If she didn’t want to show it, she could have chosen a different dress, a one which doesn’t show the arms in that way, instead of using makeup, it makes it more noticeable.

  13. kristen says:

I feel for Melanie. Yes — I know she has more money than I ever will, etc.

But she looks like she’s been through the Hollywood wringer. That she bought into all of it. I hope she hasn’t relapsed.

  14. Karen says:

    Actions of a women scorned.

If she hid the tattoo she’d never have get own post, maybe not even buried in the link section. She definitely be in the end of the day link section if she covered the whole thing with makeup. Melanie is over Antonio (link).

Half covering it up: Literally wearing a broken heart on her sleeve, well she’s getting the most press. She was hot sh*t back in the day, she knows how to play the game.

    • Lori says:

Yup………and You can’t tell me that she’s not going to milk this hard and do an attention run as her daughter promotes 50 shades of grey either. Melanie is the orginal Anna with her teenage relationship with Don Johnson. She’ll be all over that red carpet, working it hard.

  15. grabbyhands says:

And this, kids, is why you don’t get anyone’s name tattooed on your body unless it’s your kid or one of your relatives. Or possibly in memory of someone. Otherwise it’s like you’re asking the universe to doom your relationship.

    • TG says:

But why tattoo your kids on your arm? Is it going to remind you to be a better parent? I just have never understood the logic behind it. I don’t need to look at a tattoo it body daily to reminds self I have a child that I need to take care of. I just know some people who run around on vacations without their kids, go out partying frequently are the ones who have the tattoos, meanwhile the mom’s who are actually putting their child’s needs first are at home doing just that or working and don’t have tattoos. Not saying everyone is like this but I know quite a few who are.

      • grabbyhands says:

I don’t consider it to be indicative of whether or not you’re a good or caring parent-some people just like having those kinds of tattoos. Nothing wrong with that-it is highly unlikely you’re going to have a terrible breakup with your kid.

  16. megs283 says:

I love Tattoo Nightmares! Glad I’m not the only one. 🙂 The three artists are AMAZING – though often the final pieces are waaaay too big for my tastes. But it’s so gratifying to see the happy and relieved customers at the end!

  17. Aussie girl says:

I’ve always thought that tattoo looked so tacky! But the duck lip pose prior to the seperation looks just as bad!

  18. Eleonor says:

    What’s wrong with her nose???

  19. Anoneemouse says:

I think this was a message to her husband that she is over him. Point well taken Melanie!

  20. Green Is Good says:

Melanie , write it in your “burn book” and move on. And either fully cover your ill-advised tat or not at all .

Seriously, this is so immature, and makes her look pathetic. Meanwhile, Antonio is giving zero effs.

    • Pepsi Presents...Coke says:

DEFINITELY. I must sound mean and like I hate her, which I don’t. It’s just that this is exactly how I imagined this would play out.

  21. DrFunkenstein says:

Childish. At our age, you don’t need to act like a seventeen year old when your relationship falls apart. Doesn’t speak well for her.

  22. aenflex says:

I’ve never understood how she landed him. Perhaps it’s because I’m a bitch. She’s always seemed to me like a needy, off-the-rails has-been.

    • Nope says:

Exactly. In her shoes I would be more than happy. She enjoyed his best years, while he had her sunset boulevard (and addiction drama).

    • Esmom says:

Omg, lol, best description of her I’ve read. Priceless. And spot on. But even though he was supposedly such a heartthrob he doesn’t seem like much of a prize, either.

    • Ann says:

She was a solid ticket to fame and fortune for him! Why does everyone think Banderas is/was such a prize? Time hasn’t passed him by either!

  23. pnichols says:

I believe the statement she was trying to make was that she’s a moron. She succeeded.

  24. roxy750 says:

How about not wearing sleeveless? not too hard

  25. Hideyocomments says:

If this is the best she can come up with, to show him, the world, whoever she thinks gives an *f*, that she’s movin’ on… Yikes!

Living well is the best revenge, if indeed she wants it. Clean yourself up, Mel. Go on vacation, go shopping, hang out with friends or reconnect with old ones. Empower yourself, take up yoga, stop smoking, get professional help if you need it. Do things that you didn’t because you were too busy worrying about keeping a man that didn’t want to stay. I hate to say this, but her chance of having another long term meaningful relationship, in her present state, is slim. So if I were her, I’d take a long slow inventory of my life and figure out how best to live out the good years remaining. With enough money, free time, I’d be ticking off the places where I’d always wanted to go, grabbing a good friend and waving bye bye!

    • Esmom says:

You could be describing Demi Moore, too. Maybe they should form a little support group?

  26. Ginger says:

I’ve covered up my tattoos with dermablebd for photo shoots before and it looks 1000 times better than this. She’s doing this on purpose.

  27. Dany says:

Why only the name and not the whole tattoo? That´s just silly and screams “give me attention”!

  28. bettyrose says:

    She has really nice arms.

  29. siri says:

To get a tatoo like this already isn’t a bright idea, but to try to cover it with makeup is plain stupid. I always liked Melanie, so the way she looks makes me a bit sad. So old, so worn out. God knows if Antonio was cheating, but I’m sure she completely immersed herself into this relationship- and maybe he grew out of being the much younger, hot Latin lover. Perhaps he just matured, while she stayed the insecure, jealous, possessive Melanie…

    • lunchcoma says:

Whatever you think of Melanie and Antonio, it’s not accurate to describe him as “much younger.” She was born on August 9, 1957. He was born on August 10, 1960. If you switched those birthdates around, no one would even consider three years and one day to be a relevant age gap.

  30. Allie says:

I can’t get over how bad she looks.

  31. Kosmos says:

Well, the Antonio tattoo, unlike some, has really been good for all of their years together, so it wasn’t a total loss by any means; however, I’ve never really liked the Antonio tattoo, partly because it’s so huge and covers too much of her shoulder. I always thought it looked silly, like she’s trying too hard to make such a big statement about how this is her MAN….moreover, I feel like this is an antiquated way in which to show how important someone is to you. Since she’s just blurred out the name for now, I suppose she could fill it in with a substitute name if she meets the right person? Lol

  32. Jayna says:

Melanie is getting more attention than she’s gotten in 15 years. She’s loving it and taking advantage of it while she gets it. She’s probably hoping it will get her more gigs, and just being shot for her and not because she’s on Antonio’s arm is probably making her happy. Of course, that pathetic attempt to cover up her tattoo is all for a dig and for attention. Ah, celebs, you gotta love them. Milk it, Melanie.

  33. Jayna says:

They had a photo of Bo Derek with her honey, John Corbett, on Daily Mail. She’s aging beautifully and is still hot and a year older (57) than Melanie Griffith (56). What a difference minimal work on your face makes compared to overuse of plastic surgery and botox, fillers, etc
