Kudos to Seth and LeVar Burton. But since the goal is all about reading, I can’t help but think about novels. Hence, my favorite Family Guy Stewie riff to Brian:
How you uh, how you comin’ on that novel you’re working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you’re working on there? Your big novel you’ve been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah?

    • mimif says:

Lol Kiddo, you’re insane today. 😀

LeVar Burton is a standup guy. My neice went to private school with his daughter, and they treat her like family. LeVar & his wife gave my fortunate neice a brand new MacBook Pro for Christmas one year, they are both very kind and generous folks.

      • Kiddo says:

        Wow, that’s an expensive gift.

      • QQ says:

It makes me superhappy to hear this!!

      • Ag says:

it makes me happy to hear that too. i LOVE TNG and always hope that the actors on it are cool people in real life. 🙂

      • mimif says:

Yeah she was there on scholarship, and not as…Brentwood wealthy as some of the other attendees, so they gifted her something to help with her schooling. They were very protective of her (a flaming ginger growing up in Santa Monica), and always offered her their home. 🙂

      • PennyLane says:

I’m so happy to hear that! LeVar Burton has always seemed really down to earth and nice.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

How lovely to hear that story, I have been a fan of Burton’s since I first saw him on TV, yeah it was Roots, I’m no spring chicken, he is wonderful and Reading Rainbow reborn just makes my day! I love the arc of his career, I watch Perception his latest show, with Erik McCormack, and I was so happy to discover LeVar is a co-star in it.

    • FLORC says:

Seth does a lot of good side projects. I’m so sad about Cosmos. That show was truly awesome.
Still, something about him doesn’t sit right. How he hosts awards, jokes on shows, movies, and how he interacts with people in his private life. It’s all just somehow unlikable.

Still, Burton is awesome and was even more awesome playing himself on Community.
Butterfly in the sky… I can go twice as high…

      • Kiddo says:

Seth seems incredibly smart, sharply witty, but then he likes to push things to the lowest common denominator. Sometimes that combination works and then sometimes it’s gaggingly cringe-worthy.

      • lunchcoma says:

People are complicated. The same person can be a gross sexist and be a proactive supporter of learning and knowledge (as I think anyone who’s regularly interacted with academics has already learned).

      • FLORC says:

        Lunchcoma
I’ve come to know and be very good friends with quite a few academics. Sometimes they’re just so socially awkward it’s insulting. Sometimes they actually mean to be insulting. I don’t think i’ve met one that makes a living on playing to the lowest of the low and then acts like their whole goal is to bring the US back to the golden age where being smart was something to strive for.

When he promoted Cosmos he spoke of how when he was growing up space travel was amazing and people truly respected astronauts. We strived to be scientists and not the next social media darling.
He says these things and donates some money, but his overall actions completely contradict his message.

And i’ve never seen him donate to something he wasn’t going to profit from, but maybe i’m not looking hard enough.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Ack! Why are you sad about Cosmos? Did it get cancelled and I missed it?

      • Gigi says:

@Tiffany – Cosmos was meant to only run the one season; MacFarlane and Degrasse-Tyson have said there aren’t currently any plans to create any more episodes 🙁

      • Happyhat says:

@Tiffany – I think Cosmos would only ever have been one season, as the Carl Sagan one is only one ‘season’.

I’ve yet to see it, but I reallllllllly want to! (Comes out on DVD in the UK in September so I’ll have to wait till then)

Re Seth and his philanthropy, I think he has something to do with animal shelters? Or, something originally set up by his mother, or because of his mother or something… I have no idea what else he does.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I can totally hear Stewie in my head, well done Kiddo! 😀

  2. InvaderTak says:

I have this memory of watching a reading rainbow and levar Burton sitting on a tree reading to the audience then suddenly jumping up and yelling ‘ants in my pants! ants in my pants!’. that’s all I recall from years of watching. I also remember being the only one of my friends that called him jordi. I was raised on TNG! Good on them for making it work again!

    • Belle Epoch says:

And out of all those books, I remember “iguanas meet you at the airport”!

      Best show EVER. Go LeVar!!!

    • Ayre says:

Oh my god. Ants in my pants. Thank you for bringing back that memory.

And Next Gen all the way, baby. All. The. Way.

  3. Rae says:

LeVar Burton is weeping happy tears. Yay Reading Rainbow!

  4. Jedi says:

Seth has a face you just want to punch, but he deserves kudos for some seriously good philanthropic endevours. This, plus all the money and time he put towards Cosmos (and getting Sagen’s museum finished), makes me grudgingly think he’s ok. Not great, but ok.

    • Sunny says:

I think he is a smug misogynist but I have to admit he supports causes dear to my heart. Good on him. This is a generous gesture and he fully deserves credit for lending his support.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

I sign on, he has always annoyed me as a smart ass misogynist, similar to Bill Maher; so smart, so funny, so hateful towards women. He has made me laugh, he can be charming and he supports some causes I’m into but anyone who has such anger towards 50% of the population because of their lady bits needs their head examined. Women have far more cause for misandry but we can’t make a comedy career out of it like men can with misogyny. Why is that? Oh yeah, because it’s still okay to be verbally hateful and abusive to women, I forgot my place, must by my time of the month.

      • Illyra says:

“Women have far more cause for misandry but we can’t make a comedy career out of it like men can with misogyny.”

I disagree. Also, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but women can make jokes and laugh their *sses off—on primetime talk shows, no less—when some nutjob cuts off her boyfriend/husband’s d*ck… however, NO ONE laughs about a woman getting beat up by her crazy s/o, without also being slammed by nearly everyone for being an evil misogynist. Bit of a double standard, I’d say.

    • CariBean says:

I see Peter Brady when I see him.

    • Ayre says:

      Can’t hate on philanthropy.

  5. GeeMoney says:

Courteney Cox’s face scares me. And she used to be such a beautiful woman…

  6. aqua says:

My kids loved that show, and so did I. When ever it was on my kids would watch which was great because it meant some quiet time for me.

  7. lassie says:

The amount of pancake makeup that Seth MacFarlane wears is level Kardashian .

    • gefeylich says:

Heh. He and Jeremy Renner are competing to see who can wear more in public.

I still think McFarlane is a douche. $1M is tax-dodging, de-douchifying chump change to him, so I wouldn’t paint a halo on him yet. I am happy for Burton though, whose motives for reviving RR are far more sincere.

  8. dorothy says:

What a nice change of pace. After reading about people like Kardashians having million dollar weddings, overly extravagant lifestyles to the point of vulgarity it’s nice to see someone that is a humanitarian and an all around good person.

    • Marigold says:

I’ll admit this is nice but I’d stop short of calling him an all around good person.

  9. PeaSoup says:

…and my immense crush on him just grew larger. Love him.

    • MissP says:

I am with you on that — love his humor and think he’d be awesome to have at your BBQ. Yanno? Down to earth and just plain silly.

  10. lisa2 says:

LOVED Reading Rainbow. Would watch it all the time when I taught. And loved the book selections. Got children interested in reading and finding their favorite authors at a young age.

Other shows I would love to have brought back. Grammar Rock.. OMG I learned so much watchign those between cartoons.. LOL

and I have an OLD.. I mean OLD VHS of Free to be You, Free to be Mme.. Kids loved it and they should remake that. update it. So many life lessons to learn. And children learn well through great animation and fun music

    • Ericka says:

This makes me want to go back to elementary school! When times were much simpler…

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Free to be….you and me! I loved that book, I wasn’t allowed much TV at all, so I didn’t see the show, such a different world in ’72.

  11. Lucy2 says:

There is something about him that really bugs me, but that’s an awesome thing to do. And LeVar is amazing, seems to be a truly lovely human being. I’m so glad the support for RR has been so huge. He wanted a million and has been pledged over $4 million so far.

  12. Vampi says:

Seth! I would SO hit that! I just can’t help myself!!!!
There must be a support group somewhere…hmmm..
(I’ll join AFTER I hit that though..)

    • Olenna says:

I felt that way once upon a time until I realized what a douche he can be. He’s still cute, though!

    • Happyhat says:

I would also like to join the support group.

“My name is Happyhat, and I am a Seth MacFarlane fan.”

      “Hello Happyhat”

  13. Sarah says:

Seth is a huge Star Trek fan too, he’s even appeared on the show before.

  14. Dawn says:

I think it is a nice thing to do and as my mother always told me as she made me volunteer for this that or the other thing, that to whom much has been given, much is required in return. Or something like that.

  15. Chris says:

I live to give. That’s his motto.

  16. moi says:

Anyone, Is KiKi preggers or she just messed with her face?

  17. LAK says:

    Bravo Seth!

  18. TheCountess says:

Not to be nitpicky, but he hasn’t donated $1 million; he’s pledged to match donations up to $1 million. Depending on where the fundraiser tops out, that could be significantly less than seven figures.

  19. Word Girl says:

My hats off to Burton because he has always been for the promotion of education for the young. There is so much garbage on TV that that robs kids of their purity & innocence I.e. Family Guy. Glad to see educational tv that propels kids’ imaginations in the right direction. Although Family Guy isn’t a cartoon for kids a lot of parents allow their kids to watch it. I can’t praise Seth for being a super positive person, but I will praise his good efforts. Lavar Rocks!

  20. Norman says:

I used to love spending those warm elementary school summers watching old TV shows on KTTV, and watching pre original shows and Nick Toons on Nickelodeon but my favorite show to was Reading Rainbow. I loved the books that were shown, the story lines and the places that LeVar Burton went. Say what you will about PBS but I thought this was very good programing about reading, literacy, education and life for the small amount that the tax payer foots in. I am glad to see LeVar Burton revive the series for the internet and it is great to see Seth MacFarlane and other people get involved.

  21. Francis says:

I love his philanthropy towards educational tv. I was highly impressed that he is the person behind funding, producing and bring back the tv program COSMOS. Which I highly and throughly enjoyed and he chose for the hosting of the show a non-known tv host ,but instead a respected African American scientist unknown to tv audiences who did a phenomenal job. I’m sure Cosmos will win several awards and I hope Seth is awarded one for his contribution to bringing back the loved science program Cosmos.
Kudos to him for his great contribution to Reading Rainbow. Many people grew up on it and it taught many.
