Candy Spelling shades daughter Tori for spending $50k in one store: hypocrite?

Candy Spelling has “downsized” to a $35 million condominium in Century City, California, with “downsized” being of course extremely relative. She previously lived in the largest home in LA County, a monstrous 57,000 square foot mansion built under her direction when her late husband, TV producer Aaron Spelling, was still alive. The Manor included three gift wrapping rooms, a barber shop, bowling alley and an entryway based on the mansion in Gone With the Wind.

Candy’s daughter, Tori Spelling, claims that her dad Aaron left her just around $800,000 out of his estimated $500 million estate when he passed in 2006. This goes a long way toward explaining why Tori continues to hustle for cash by making her personal life the plot of a series of books and reality shows. Tori and her mom have had a contentious relationship since, with Candy claiming that Tori lied about the amount she inherited, suggesting it was much higher.

In a new-ish, not entirely positive profile of Candy in the NY Times, Candy suggested that Tori’s inheritance was somewhat measly because Tori has a spending problem. She said:

Ms. Spelling was backing into the subject of her daughter, whose husband, Dean McDermott, has been battling sex addiction under the watchful eye of the Lifetime TV network. Tori and Candy have had problems over the years, most memorably when Tori reportedly inherited just $800,000 of her father’s estimated $600 million fortune. The two were estranged for quite some time.

It’s clear that the mother-daughter relationship is still fraught. One minute, Ms. Spelling talks about how things are great. “I see her probably twice a month,” she said. The next, she says Tori lacked the wherewithal to manage a large inheritance. “She would close a store and drop $50,000 to $60,000,” Ms. Spelling said. “I never did anything like that. She just went crazy.” (Tori did not respond to two requests for comment.)

Candy Spelling has long been a polarizing figure in Hollywood, and one reason is her apparent obsession with money. In the go-go ’80s, she opened her homes to glossy magazines and showed off her wealth. Today, she brags about how much she’s saved.

[From The NY Times via Radar]

The entire article is worth reading for the shade thrown at Candy. Candy had rooms dedicated to a rare doll collection and an entire basement filled to the rafters with stuff. I saw her HGTV special on packing up to sell the mansion (Petra Ecclestone bought it in 2011 for $85 million) and it looked like Costco in her basement. Candy collected so much crap that she called herself an “archivist.”

It’s ridiculous that Candy is claiming that Tori wouldn’t have been able to handle a larger inheritance because she spends $50k at stores. Obviously Tori learned how to shop from her mom, who built the most expensive house in the US. That’s not to say that I feel sorry for Tori at all. She’s making plenty of cash by exploiting her husband’s supposed infidelity.

I wonder what Candy would have looked like nowadays without the nose job.

  2. Lori says:

I don’t feel to bad for either of them.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      I find them both revolting.

        Yes, me too

      • MrsBPitt says:

        me three!

      • kri says:

American Horror Tori continues. All we need is more of Dean and his crotch being raked over the coals(probably the only way to purify it at this point) so that she can keep the money rolling in. Those poor kids of theirs are going to need that inheritance from Gram to pay their therapists. So sad.

    • Rice says:

      Indeed. Like mother, like daughter.

On a positive note, I don’t how old that pic is, but Tori looks pretty with her parents.

  3. Wren33 says:

Tori is probably horribly insecure being the not traditionally beautiful daughter of a beautiful woman, and being the ugly duckling of 90210. That said, she is cute enough in the real world, and her obsession with platinum blond hair and makeup applied with a trowel is not doing her any favors. I wish she would go darker again. I’m sure my comments on her looks will help matters 😉

    • Audrey says:

Tori looks exactly like her mother….

    • delorb says:

I wouldn’t call Candy beautiful. As a matter of fact, Tori gets ALL her looks from Candy. If it weren’t for all the plastic surgery (done on both women), they’d look like twins.

      • Wren33 says:

I don’t personally find her stunning or anything, but if you look at pictures of her when younger, she definitely is a traditionally pretty woman. Whether some of it is from plastic surgery, it certainly worked better with what she already had. And I feel gross ranking people.
        http://a.abcnews.com/images/2020/ht_candy_11_090323_ssv.jpg

      • Bob Loblaw says:

This is not the case, Tori looks a bit like her mother in coloring and plastic alterations today but Tori has never looked like her very much. She looks more like her father, who was talented but very homely. Candy was on TV quite a bit, she was an attractive lady in her heyday. You can find numerous photos of the whole family over the years, Tori doesn’t look much like Candy in any of them.

      • delorb says:

@Bob, you say she looks a bit like her mother, but she doesn’t look much like her. Which is it? I stand by my opinion that she looks a lot like Candy. The eyes are the same.

@Wren, her pre-plastic foray pictures are stunning. Somehow her eyes look way different. But that puffy, bulging look she’s sporting today is the same as Tori.

      • Kristin says:

Actually, if you look at pictures from when she and her mother were younger, she looks EXACTLY like her father. And by younger pictures, I mean before Tori got her nose job. She had her father’s nose. Plus, Tori is a natural brunette, not a natural blonde like her mom. Tori has brown eyes as opposed to her mom’s blue eyes, and Tori has her dad’s chin. All in all, I really don’t think she favors her mom genetically at all. I know you probably think she does now, because of the horrifying platinum dye-job and spackled-on clown makeup, but if you really break down their physical features, she takes more after her dad. I’ve seen pictures from when Tori was little, and although I don’t like her mom, she was stunning in her youth. I’m sorry if I sound snarky, but Tori has never been much of a looker and always a bit on the homely side.

As for the money issue, yeah it’s definitely hypocritical for her mom to be talking smack about Tori’s spending, but I have ZERO sympathy for Tori. Especially since she spends half her time whining about how her and her loser husband are always broke, she didn’t get enough inheritance, can’t afford a vasectomy to corral her husband’s wonder sperm, wah wah wah. Her dad was the only talented one in that family. I’d love to just see the rest of them vanish from sight.

      • delorb says:

        @Kristin,

I think the eyes are the same. Same buggy, froggy thing going on. They might be a different color, but they’re the same size.

I have very little sympathy for either woman. Perhaps a tiny bit more for Tori as she’s a product of her upbringing. Just as I don’t believe half of what either says. All that whining by Tori is probably a white lie, just as the stuff Candy says about Tori overspending is probably a lie. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

  4. GlimmerBunny says:

Wow, Tori looks surprisingly beautiful in the picture with her parents! She should really go back to that haircolor.

    • Wendy M says:

I was hoping someone else would notice that. I had to do a double take to make sure it was even her. Not only should she return to that colour, but a few extra pounds really seems to soften her features as well.

    • Jackson says:

Yep. And to a softer, warmer-toned makeup palette and away from those harsh, garish colors of lipstick. That would improve her look dramatically.

    • BendyWindy says:

She could change her hair color, but that look was several surgeries ago. It’s a shame she didn’t know when to stop.

    • Courtney says:

Tori should def go back to that look. I fear Dean likes her a little on the trashy side though.

    • lisa2 says:

Was going to say the same thing.. she looks so pretty in that picture. Her face is so soft.. the lip color too..

I think the blond hair is too harsh for her features. Everything on her face is very pronounced. Large eyes.. she looks so pretty with darker hair and NOT THAT RED LIPSTICK. I wish someone would tell her that. Darker blond is so nice on her. The bleach blond ages her and makes her face looks so harsh.

    • GiGi says:

Just came to say the same! She really looks lovely there – a little fuller, good posture, and hair and makeup that suit her.

    • Green Girl says:

I agree, she looks great in that picture with her parents. I find myself just feeling more and more surprised when I see pictures of celebrities that were taken 10+ years ago. Quite a few of them look like completely different people!

  5. BendyWindy says:

Would it have been nice if Aaron Spelling had left Tori more money? Sure, but he wasn’t obligated to have done so and it’s not wrong that he didn’t. So what if Candy spends like water? It’s her money now to do with what she pleases. There’s a huge difference between spending that kind of money when you have it, like Candy does, and spending it when you don’t…like Tori did. And therein lies the issue. Tori doesn’t have hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank, and she needs to learn to live within her means.

    • candy corn says:

It wasn’t really Candy’s money either. It was Aaron’s money that he gave to his wife. All she did was spend it. And according to Tori, Candy was much of a mom either handing the kids off to nannies and the help. Candy has always been a spoiled princess and taught those values to her daughter. She is the last person who has a right to wag a finger at Tori.

    • JaneFr says:

Funny, I’m always shocked about it. Most of it is cultural of course, here a parent can NOT disinherit (?) his children. And all children get the same amount.
Plus, I think yhat if you want your kids to be responsible and
thrifty, that something you have to teach them, from birth. You do not spoil your kids and then cut them off and then expect them to thrive.
They are what you made them. Take responsability.

And yes, even thought I hate it, more and more, each time I open my mouth , I hear my mother speaking.

      • MollyB says:

He didn’t cut her off or disinherit her. Typically, in this culture at least, when one spouse dies, the other spouse retains their communal, shared marital money. Children only inherit when the surviving spouse dies. Tori likely will inherit her father’s money—when her mother dies.

      • janeFR says:

        @MollyB
What if she marries again and then die ? will Aaron money goes to his kids ? or to his wife second husband ?
here, the kids get half (at leats), the spouse half (depending of the number of spouses etc).

  6. Audrey says:

They both have issues. Maybe they should both drop the attitude of being better than each other and just focus on enjoying life.

I don’t think either of them is great at managing money. It just matters less for candy because she has so much.

But Tori could have lived fine on what she’s made if she didn’t live beyond her means

  7. CTgirl says:

Tori may have learned her shopping habits from Candy but Tori doesn’t, at least according to Tori, have Candy’s resources. Therefore, Tori is an idiot if she spends money like momma. The fact that someone would close a store and drop tens of thousands of dollars in a store for things they don’t need (because no one needs that much stuff) is just disgusting.

  8. Frida_K says:

On my yahoo newsfeed there is a story about Heidi Klum’s 25 million dollar mansion (up for sale since she’s now bored with it and on to the next project) and another story about how 30 would-be (Africa to Italy) immigrants were found dead in a boat.

I have no sympathy for the mega-wealthy and their “problems” and am at a loss as to what the duty of countries such as Italy (and the United States) is to the nations impoverished by their own histories of imperialism and colonialism.

Not that I’m being a wet blanket or anything…

    :/

    • Maple Goodness says:

+1000 Where I live I see a lot of poverty, real poverty where people can’t afford food, clothing, etc. and depend on social programs to help them. The problems of the mega rich are a joke. It doesn’t seem right that such extreme poverty exists, not only here but in many countries while the rich spend millions upon millions buying what they don’t need at all and/or what they cannot use all of in their lifetime. *sigh*

    • Emily C. says:

      Yep.

$50,000 at one time, in one store, on crap she doesn’t need in any way. How many people would that help? How many educations would that pay for, how much medical care? Then looking at the insane amount of money she spent on her mansion… how do these people live with themselves? They’re disgusting.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

To be fair many super wealthy people give a lot back to charities, much more than we peasants can, and it is not right to scapegoat any group because of worldwide social problems. I don’t like excess or waste, I don’t like social inequality and social injustice but I also don’t find divisiveness particularly effective in solving real world problems. Whether of not Heidi sells a fancy house, those poor people are still on that boat.

  9. bammer says:

Candy isn’t a hypocrite because she can afford what she buys. Tori keeps telling everyone who will listen that she doesn’t have money. Tori squandered the millions of dollars of 90210 money she made by the grace of nepotism. Not Candy’s fault either.

  10. BratB says:

I think that when you are the source or married to to source of income you don’t really feel like your spending is a problem but when someone is giving you money that you didn’t really earn and you blow I on dumb stuff it’s easy to say how dare you waste my money, and not be responsible! It just the perspective of a rich lady who has issue with her child.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Money is power, even in family relationships, and power and control often lead to rebellion.

  11. delorb says:

Don’t know why so many people believe what Candy is shoveling. They caught her in a LIE in the very same article. So either Tori was given a meager amount because they didn’t think she could handle it properly, or she was given a fortune that she’s squandered at $50k a pop.

They are both a piece of work, but I’d put most of this on Candy. She was the adult in the relationship far longer than Tori. Sometimes you let the small stuff go (she’s never leaving Dean) and connect with your grandchildren. Children who are completely innocent in this feud. I got the impression way back when, that if Tori had kissed Candy’s butt (like her brother did), she’d have gotten more money. Or perhaps Candy was (is) never going to give her a dime.

    • Jayna says:

Kandi and the grandchildren are close. Kandy and her daughter are back on good terms. She has helped her out since they reconciled. She bought them their home in Malibu that Tori has squandered and moved from. The son didn’t get more. He did an article recently. He survived addictions. He’s living a quiet life in Portland, Oregon, and working as a certified life coach for those with addictions, etc.

Randy Spelling. ” I’ve had an interesting relationship with my upbringing and obviously how I live now is completely different than how I grew up. It feels like a different lifetime and yet I can see the similarities and I can appreciate how I grew up.

“It was a big learning curve for me to live in a way that I couldn’t just have what I wanted when I wanted it. I had to come down to earth and realize that I have to work for it.”

I agree with Kandi. I don’t like the woman and think she was a cold mother. But Tori never stops spending. Sting had it right. Giving them tons of money as adults helps no one. Tori has had successful books, successful shows, made plenty of money. Add on to that the 800,000 she got. Yet she spends into the ground and then sell themselves out so they can go spend more money ad nauseum. More money isn’t the answer from Kandi. Tori needs to go in to therapy and stop spending. Her children being given 10,000 birthday parties as a one year old, on and on. Where does it stop?

      • someone says:

I think Sting is full of crap. He supposedly has a $300 million fortune and he tells his kids he’s going to spend it all, not leave them big trust funds. I hope he is being loose with the truth and he has at least set aside a $5 million trust fund for each kid (or some single digit million dollar fund at least). I get trying to teach you kids to work hard for their money but it’s silly to act like they need to start from nothing. If he doesn’t set something aside for his future grandchildren I think he’s a fool.

      • Jayna says:

I’m not talking about what Sting leaves his kids. I’m talking about what he gives them as young adults, adults. He doesn’t shower them with money as it builds no character, no strong work ethic. They work for their money and support themselves. People act like Kandi should give the kids tons of money. Clearly, the way Tori spends, it would be the worst thing for her. She blew through 800,000, all the money from her best-selling books, reality shows. She wasted the nice Malibu home her mom bought her by trying to trade up and losing money on the deal. They are now in a rental. She goes through money like water and she has made good money. Throwing more money at her does nothing good for her.

Sting said there wouldn’t be much left when he dies. They will inherit plenty, in the millions. It just won’t be a crazy amount each considering what he’s worth now.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

My dad has bucks that he is not leaving to me or my brothers. It would be nice to inherit his wealth but it’s not in the cards and I’m not crying bitter tears over it. Your parents money is just that, theirs, if you’re over eighteen, they owe you nothing more and anything you do receive is gravy that you should be thankful for. Tori doesn’t deserve a dime, she was given a fantastic childhood and a well paying career and if she can’t manage her finances now, too bad for her. What is with this generation of greedy little piggies who think mommy and daddy should just pay and pay? Grow up, all of you, if you want money, go earn it. I don’t care who your parents are.

      • Kristin says:

I completely agree with you Jayna. Her brother grew up just as privileged as she did and received the same amount of inheritance and he’s doing great. Tori is a grown-ass woman in her freaking 40’s with 4 children and a long, documented history of irresponsible spending. You don’t have to take Candy’s word for it, it’s cited by dozens of other sources, including by Tori herself. Clearly throwing more money at her isn’t going to alleviate her spending addictions, it’s probably going to exacerbate them. There are so many people in this country living on less than 30K a year and most of them still manage to live within their means. Tori is a spoiled brat who has blown through millions of dollars because she refuses to live within her means. Until she really learns the difference between wanting something and actually needing something, giving her more money won’t do a damn bit of good.

    • Courtney says:

I heard Randy didn’t get very much either. Can anyone confirm that?

    • delorb says:

Candy isn’t close to Tori and her family. It has been well documented over the years. And no one who is close to their child would say the above. They certainly wouldn’t go on Fox and say that their child’s Actions Killed their dad. Randy is playing his cards right by staying as far away from Candy as possible and not taking Tori’s side in anything. He knows Candy can’t live forever.

  12. Tiffany says:

I find myself wondering if Aaron had lived how things would be with the family. He was the moderator for awhile before he got truly sick, wasn’t he?

  13. Sullivan says:

Some people are so poor, all they have is money.

    • minime says:

      +1

      Your comment beats it all.
What for a fu***** up family!
Tori is the image of her mother and what she taught her. Not everything that the offspring does is on their parents, but in this case, I think there is a very heavy responsibility from the way Tori was raised. In the end, neither Tori nor her mom contributed for any of the money “they” have (fruit of Aaron’s work) and both play on the media, trash-talking each other to get more money…It’s just sad!

    • Poink517 says:

      Great comment, Sullivan.

  14. lisa2 says:

I always felt that Candy was jealous of how much Aaron dotted on Tori.. She was a daddy’s girl. Some women are like that. They resent the daughter for taking some of the Husbands attention from them. Wonder if she had some influence in how the money was divided.

  15. Word Girl says:

Candy May have had the most expensive house in Hollywood but that house served a purpose. It was for business just as much as for living. Yes, Candy made the house larger than she intended, but she used every bit of it. Candy worked just as hard as spelling did. She organized the social events that helped her hubby make the big time business deals. Also, Candy wasn’t struggling for finances because she knew what her budget was and stayed within it. However, she should have taught her daughter how to do the same so for that she is definitely a hypocrite. Also, you never see Tori’s brother doing these stupid “I’m going broke shows” claiming to be financially struggling and is not. I believe Tori lied about the inheritance she received as well as the fake marital stories. Tori’s biggest problem is that she just wants unwarranted attention. Simple as that.

  16. shannon says:

Meh. They’re both spoiled, entitled brats IMO. I could easily live, probably retire now at the age of 38 with $800,000. It’s a standard of living thing. I think Candy’s spoiled, but whatever Aaron’s will was, it is what it is. Tori needs to accept what she has and work with it, the way us peasants do. I quit a full-time job with benefits a few months ago (TBH, I really hated that job anyway) to stay at home for a bit with my six-year-old son who has special needs. I really needed to work with him more. I figured I could easily find a part-time job. I can’t even find a part-time job to save my life (I’m not kidding, even the competition for a job at Hardee’s was insane). I’m stuck competing with teenagers or young adults who have fast food experience I don’t have. So my fiancé and I are, for the time being, living off his salary. The loss of my salary sucked, but we’ve figured out ways to make it work, even cut our grocery expenses by $400 a month. It actually was less difficult than I thought it would be. Live within your means. And Tori’s a good hustler, but I do wish she would leave her kids out of it. That reality show was pretty horrible considering that she had the kids in on the act 🙁

  17. Shelby says:

Tori is unrecognizable in the photo with her dad, I had to do a double take

  18. Izzy says:

I don’t have much respect for either of them, but at least Candy isn’t crying poverty.

  19. the original bellaluna says:

Candy has the money to close a store and shop to her hearts content; Tori does not. It’s that cut and dry.

All Tori has done since her father’s death is bitch about not having money, hustle to make money, and produce more children than she is unable to support in the manner to which she was accustomed as a child/teen/young adult, all while spending beyond her means.

    No shade, just fact.

  20. katy says:

Exactly what I was going to say – she was really gorgeous before she messed with her face. Too bad.

  21. Emily C. says:

Nthing the comments about Tori’s hair color. She can have whatever hair color she wants, it’s not really my business, but wow she looks so much worse with platinum blonde hair than with darker hair. Not to mention how much worse the horrible makeup applied with a trowel makes her look.

  22. ctkat1 says:

Interesting that the NY Times piece was written by Jacob Bernstein, who is Nora Ephron’s son- so he knows a thing about being the offspring of a famous Hollywood player.

The relationship between Candy and Tori is so dysfunctional, and has been for decades. They take these public potshots at each other all the time.

  23. Snowpea says:

My mum is a Candy Spelling and I will defend Tori till the day I die because of it. My mum was a great beauty when she was young and was threatened by me when I started to blossom. Unless you’ve grown up with a toxic mum how would you know what it’s like?

My mum told her three kids recently that she is leaving her relatively large estate to a local charity called the Cat Protection Society. Whatevs, it’s her money, sure, but after being treated so appallingly by her, it feels very hurtful.

You gotta walk a mile in someone’s shoes before judging.

  24. Marianne says:

They’re both ridiculous. Candy for shading her daughter, Tori for dropping that kind of money when she apparently “too broke for a vasectomy”.

  25. rlh says:

I don’t care what she thinks of her daughter, her daughters behavior, her daughters choices. She should not shade her daughter in public. Say all you want to each other in private, but keep your mouth shut about your kids in public. Ditto for your parents. If no one has attempted murder, arson, theft, etc., you should always have your kids’ back. The fact that Candy continues to talk about Tori in somewhat negative ways, says everything, to me, about what kind of mother she is and what kind of person she is; not good.

    • Jaquebelle says:

Totally agree!!! Hilarious that Candy Spelling would shade her daughter for overspending. Her upbringing cultivated this and created such a spending monster. Candy will obviously never be able to spend her worth in a lifetime, so what would be the harm in lending money to her daughter and grandchildren. I am not a Tori fan, but her mother comes across as a villain and anything but maternal. Passing judgement so publicly towards your daughter over something you have done on a regular basis seems incredibly hypocritical. They don’t seem to have a mother/daughter vibe at all. One love.

      • delorb says:

        @rlh and Jaquebelle,

+1 more. I totally agree. There was obviously something going on when Tori was young that’s shaped her relationship with her mother. I know that I’m probably way off base, but I think that when Tori was born and wasn’t perfect and pretty, her mother probably laid into her.

Candy comes across (to me) as someone who is all about appearances. Tori had to look ‘just right’. Looking at her childhood pictures, Tori had teeth issues (which is true for almost all children). This pressure to look perfect probably led to Tori getting plastic surgery at a young age.

Her continuing lashing out at Tori, this need to correct, says a lot. It couldn’t have been easy growing up in a household where you’re just a prop. A less than perfect prop at that.

  26. peachcobblerby says:

Tori looks awful, she looks like a drag queen. But when I say that it’s not true cause some of the drag queens I’ve seen arw stunning!

  27. Vilodemeanus says:

I don’t think Candy will be leaving her daughter any money when she dies, it will go to the beloved brother so he can sell suckers magic rocks. Seriously he’s got to getting money from mom to even survive. Not much though by the way he’s living Candy does like to control the flow of her precious money. I do think it’s interesting that he moved away from Candy, and Candy rarely sees Tori’s kids. I came to the conclusion that in fact she doesn’t like either of her kids much, and isn’t really interested in her grandchildren. She’ll probably leave most of her money to a doll museum and a trust for the grandkids to go to college, just to spite her own kids. The ones she couldn’t control no matter how much will she exerted on them. But she tears down Tori any chance she gets, and that’s got to wear on you after 40 some years. With all those millions you’d think Candy could or would invest in real hair wigs though, because those are some cheap Ebay looking headdresses she’s got on.
