Katherine Heigl ‘was taken by surprise & angry’ at her career for ‘betraying’ her

heigl1

I’ll fully admit that Katherine Heigl gives me a solid case of schadenfreude. I’m never happier than when she fails. It’s like Christmas for me that she’s finally given up on films and had to return to TV. However, I do not enjoy the fact that she’s come back to (lucrative) network television, or that her new TV show is like a fancy rip-off of Scandal mixed with Homeland. We’ll see if it works out – but I suspect Heigl and her mom will find a way to ruin it. If they haven’t already. Anyway, Katherine talks about her career lows in this new Marie Claire UK cover story. The cover is terrible, right? They made her look like she’s had plastic surgery. Some highlights:

When her career faltered: “The thing that was my best friend for a long time suddenly turned on me. And I didn’t expect it. I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me.”

She thinks she did too many romantic comedies: “I had an amazing time. I love romantic comedies. But maybe I hit it a little too hard. I couldn’t say no. I stopped challenging myself. It became a bit by rote and, as a creative person, that can wear you down. That was part of why I took that time off, to ask myself, ‘What do I want? What am I looking for?’ and shut down all the noise.”

She almost quit the business: “Oh yeah, I had a moment where, I don’t know, I was thinking I’d maybe open a knitting store, get my money out of retirement accounts and live off that, live off the land. I had my moment where it all seemed so complicated and all I wanted to do was simplify.”

But she’s back: “There’s a part of me that’s a Hollywood animal as well. I can’t wait to get into the writer’s room and see how we do this. I feel like I’m finally rolling into the next phase of my adulthood.”

[From Marie Claire UK via The Daily Mail]

First of all, I feel like Katherine really learned the wrong lessons from her career downward spiral. Granted, she has lousy taste in film projects but that’s what happens when an actor is just doing sh-t for the paycheck. The ultimate problem is the whole “doing sh-t for a paycheck” thing though, not the lousy taste in projects. Plus, the quality of the projects Katherine was offered was probably on a steep decline after she became known as a pariah who would bad-mouth coworkers, writers and directors. And she and her mom were just known as “difficult.” They still are known that way.

And here’s how I know that Katherine hasn’t changed one iota: “I can’t wait to get into the writer’s room and see how we do this.” Katherine is not, say, Tina Fey or Mindy Kaling. Mindy and Tina were/are writers on their shows, they were writer/producer/actresses shepherding their shows through the process of network TV. Katherine is not a writer. She ALIENATES the writers on whatever show she’s on. No writer wants her in the writer’s room. No writer wants to hear her “notes.” Heigl never changes. Her big return to TV is going to be such a mess, y’all.

It’s a shame. When Grey’s first came out, I watched it a bit. I really enjoyed Izzy, and she grew on me. And I still liked her in the odd movie. But she just doesn’t have the kind of personality that rubs people the right way.

And unfortunately now, that expectation we have of her behavior is probably ruining any change she’s tried to make. People still expect her to be awful. She could genuinely try to make a change, and people would totally just brush it off as an angle.

For her sake, hopefully the show will work out.

    • Mimz says:

I totally agree with you. She might even try to change, but like most things in hollywood and well, in life, people will never forget.
I loved her in Roswell (I suppose not a lot of people watched it) and on Grey’s. But I’m not sure what to expect from this new show…
She’s good at comedy I think.

      We’ll see…

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

Roswell was my shit as a teenager. I had such a crush on Brendan Fehr, ugh. Michael and Maria forever!
Anyway I had a strong dislike for Isabel on Roswell.
OH, they had a Roswell reunion recently and guess who didn’t show up.

I don’t know Katerine Heigl manages to make every character she plays unlikeable

      • Jukebox says:

Roswell was a great show until S3 happened. The problem was that the show was being threatened with cancellation every season. But Heigl wanted more screentime and “Isabel” was never a real focus on the show.

I agree with you, I think she’s good at comedy. I saw One for the Money, and read the book, she was decent in it.

      • Jukebox says:

@stellalovejoydiver, I’m surprised she didn’t show. I’m pretty sure she still friends with Majandra and Nick.

      • minime says:

I will always cut her some slack because of Roswell, always! She and Majandra Delfino were the coolest. I also liked her in Grey’s, so whatever…I’m going against the tide (and covering my ears), but I still like her..I just don’t like her latest choice of movies.

      • holly hobby says:

Since Roswell popped up here there were rumors that she was difficult on that show as well. I think there was old gossip that she got one of the male stars fired. I never watched the show so I don’t know if that was true. However when the Grey’s brouhaha showed up, the old Roswell news turned up as well.

If she wanted to change, she would have done that a long time ago. The fact that she did not admit her shortcomings (other than poor project taste) is an admission that she didn’t change at all. She didn’t just voluntarily stopped working. Her shows bombed and bombed and Hollywood stopped calling. Her and momager’s reps didn’t help matters either.

      • Abby says:

I freaking loved pRoswell and I liked her on that show and most of greys. Unfortunately her rep makes me not want to watch her in anything now.

    • Bridget says:

From this interview it sure doesnt sound like she’s trying to make a real change, and this is the woman who threatened to sue Duane Reade for tweeting a picture of her carrying their shopping bag. Would it be that hard to just be nice to people for crying out loud? Maybe acknowledge that her career downturn was her own fault, and not because she made a few too many romantic comedies?

      • Bob Loblaw says:

I agree, her “downturn” was due to her bad attitude and horrible inability to get along with others. Her movies were terrible because her chemistry was lacking with her co-stars. She was good on Grey’s, I never saw Roswell, and then she publicly pissed on it and they tanked her character. She has not been in anything good since as far as I can tell. I remember her for the NyQuil commercial, which she sucks in, she squandered it all with that giant ego, still quite obvious in this interview.

    • Audrey says:

I like hrr based on some movies so I was really sad to hear how ungrateful and demanding she is

    • Kimmy says:

One thing I REALLY want to know is WHY,WHY, WHY does her hair always suck!? Always. Her hair stylists must hate her too.

  2. QQ says:

How about be angry at your shadow only friend Momager, she’s the one with you when you sign to crappy projects and demanding money and barking at peons and the like?

Or at yourself, Own up that you are difficult

    • Mia4S says:

I always take “difficult” reports with a grain of salt, but the evidence here is rough. She really seems to lack repeat connections. Connections are vital in Hollywood. You always see certain actors, directors, etc. working together repeatedly, or connected to the same projects, or recommending each other for projects. I never saw that with her. That’s bad word of mouth. If you bring in box office, it’s survivable. Once that stops? Bye!

      • Bridget says:

That was actually mentioned when Vulture did their Star Report – they had a hard time casting her movies because no actor wanted to play opposite her a second time. Ouch.

      • Scarlet Vixen says:

I kinda feel the need to defend her a little bit. I follow her husband on Facebook (Josh Kelley is a singer & brother of Charles Kelley from Lady Antebellum), and he posts the most adorable pictures of their family. She is a very hands on mom who adores those beautiful little girls. So, maybe she’s difficult to work with sometimes–which is probably mostly b/c of her momager–but it’s not like she’s a raging bitch/horrible human being.

      • lunchcoma says:

That actually kind of sounds like my image of her, Scarlet Vixen. Most of what I’ve heard about her personal life sounds either fine or admirable (I’ll particularly give credit to her to having what seems to be a healthy, lasting marriage and a low key personal life in an industry that doesn’t support it).

That being said, I’ve encountered people who are horrifying coworkers but beloved in their personal lives, and also people who everyone wants to work around but whose family members secretly or openly despise them. It seems like her main problems are a lack of tact, not being a team player, doing projects for the paycheck but having a self-important attitude about it. Tactlessness is often tolerated in a family setting, she probably views her family as close enough to her that the team player bit isn’t a problem, and from an outsider’s perspective the third problem might just inspire some indulgent eye-rolling.

    • kri says:

Right on, QQ. Wait til she “gets into the writer’s room” and sees no one there cause they have had advance warning and they need to get the f*ck to an underground shelter and turn off all the lights.this is going to be crayzee.

    • Christin says:

Exactly. Owning your own decisions, behavior, etc., would come across far better than this thinly veiled blaming or victimization attempt. I found it interesting she didn’t mention momager at all.

I actually liked her when she did the first of those pioneer “Love” movies (pre-Grey’s). She had great chances and apparently didn’t handle them well.

  3. Lady Macbeth (ex HiddlesF) says:

She is a gorgeous lady imo, but too self-involved and probably arrogant to have a long-lasting career (arrogance is forgiven only to men in HW).
Katherine, sorry to inform you that your ‘diem’ has passed. Bye bye.

  4. Addison DeWitt says:

Why does she remind me of Kate Gosselin? I get that ‘I’m overly important’ vibe from her, just like KG emitted. But I really liked KH in Knocked Up.

  5. Mesia says:

Her face looks pained on the cover.

  6. jax says:

Both Anna Kendrick and Charlize Theron have done this dress better. On covers of magazines recently too. Elle and Vogue I think. Anna twittered about it and it was cute.

    • Ceela says:

I was about to say the same thing! Someone is trying to make this dress happen super hard.

  7. Eleonoy says:

Of course it’s always someone else fault.

    • Your Mama says:

Of course. Her career demise can’t have anything to do with her bad attitude, can it? The only way she’s going to make a successful comeback is to own up to her attitude in the past, and that isn’t happening.

      • gefeylich says:

Really crappy attempt at damage control which will fool no one. She made the mistake of being super-demanding before she had the power to do so (famously wanted much higher salaries than she was entitled). She spoke disparagingly IN PUBLIC about producers and co-workers. She was horrible to work with. Her movies tanked. Add it all up and girl, you should be groveling in that interview instead of trying to blame everyone else for the demise of your career.

Women like Heigl are a dime a dozen in Hollywood, but she was obviously far too stupid (and “surprised” and “betrayed”) to internalize that and try to protect her career. Oh – and her TV show is going to tank, too.

  8. Renee28 says:

Her talent and resume don’t match her ego. That’s always been her problem.

  9. manda says:

it’s that dress again! but in blue this time! (Have seen on the Shaelene Woodley, Anna Kendrick, and Charleze Theron, but in black)

  10. A.Key says:

Sigh, I used to love her on Roswell. How did it all go wrong…

  11. R says:

    Well I won’t be watching.

  12. Adrien says:

I don’t really see her as someone who will have a staying power. I never envisioned her as the next Charlize or even Jen Aniston. Even if she didn’t have that attitude, she’s easily replaceable.

  13. Rhiley says:

Yeah, she is a bit of an Ashley Judd, isn’t she? I think KH would’ve been better off if she had come up with some kind of brand like Jessica Alba did with the (Not so) Honest Company. I could see KH doing something like that and finding success, though it would be hard to do now that JA has the mommy market. KH’s problem is that she is just so blah: she isn’t sexy, she isn’t cute, she isn’t funny, she isn’t particularly nice, she isn’t particularly brainy, etc.

  14. Twofer says:

Why is she already antagonising the writers? Idiot. Writer rooms tend to be filled with ego driven nerdy types. They know they arent stars or rich but they do get to play God with characters. Piss them off at your peril.

Even with her producer credit, they can still seriously screw with her. They could put her character in weird uncomfortable situations every week. Or get other characters to trash talk her through in a wink wink way. Or (and this is my personal favorite) they can build up a different character so that even though Heigl is the Lead, she isnt the fan favorite or even de facto star.

    • Eleonoy says:

She has messed with Shonda Rhimes and hasn’t learned the lesson, I don’t think she ever will.

      • Bridget says:

Remember her giving CPR to the deer? She really must have ticked off that writer’s room.

      • holly hobby says:

Two words; Ghost sex (even if it’s in the guise of a tumor). The Grey’s writers really got back at her in the end.

      • Lou says:

I will always love the Grey’s writers for giving her those dreadful storylines. They must’ve had so much fun coming up with those.

“Ooh, let’s have an episode where everyone’s saving innocent lives, and Izzy’s trying to save a deer!”
        “Make her give it CPR!”
        “Yes!” *high fives all around*

    • Tiffany :) says:

      Many great points, Twofer!

    • From North of Boston says:

I’m getting a very “Joey Tribbiani” / “Dr Ramoray” vibe from all this.

  15. Hautie says:

Holy cow… Heigl is truly delusional. Sitting there chatting like she is not solely responsible, for her career “turning on her”. I hope NBC has good insurance. Because her and that Mother of hers… is going to tear the place apart, when this new show is cancelled by week 3.

  16. TheCountess says:

She’s so bland, like a female Channing Potatohead. Zero in the personality department.

    Or, perhaps more appropriately: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  17. Talie says:

Her ascendance was kind of perfect and it’s bizarre how she and her reps screwed that up so badly.

  18. OhDear says:

    WAT on:
    (1) The cover. Holy photoshop overdose!
    (2) “Angry at [her career] for betraying her” How does that even work?!

    • Kiddo says:

Why do they even bother photographing these people when the end result looks nothing like them? I think she is prettier than the cover.

      • Bob Loblaw says:

She is beautiful and the camera loves her, I don’t understand why they did this.

      • Lou says:

It’s hard to screw up someone who’s as photogenic as Katherine, but they’ve managed. She looks like a Barbie.

  19. Bridget says:

Part of why she bugs me SO MUCH is because as a blunt-spoken woman myself, it bothers me that she’s tried to sell her bad behavior off as people just not being able to handle an outspoken woman. She and her mother have treated people badly and alienated just about every professional connection they have, berating people at every turn, acting like spoiled brats. And even worse, she has made some truly terrible movies. The Awful Truth? Not only is it a bad movie, but she makes it worse.

    • Josefa says:

      THANKS SO MUCH!!!

It really, really, REALLY upsets me when people try to pass this as “a strong woman”. No. Acting like you’re above everyone doesn’t make you strong, it makes you an arrogant and insufferable person. It greatly upsets me when some idiots claim I’m sexist for condemning her behavior. Arrogant and rude is arrogant and rude, no matter what’s between your legs.

  20. Mia4S says:

What bizarre phrasing, “betrayed her”? Hollywood will forgive a multitude if sins on two conditions:
    1. You make money for them; or if not
    2. You are not difficult to work with and offer prestige or solid support to a cast.

She stopped doing both, there is no mystery to it.

  21. Green Is Good says:

Seriously bad photoshop at work here. And her attitude hasn’t improved. She can’t wait to “get into the writer’s room and see how WE do this”? Somebody remind her she’s NOT a writer.

  22. Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Heigl gives me “a case of the schadenfreude” as well! After what she and TR Knight did to Isaiah Washington on Grey’s Anatomy (leaking the story to the press, raking him through the media, etc.), I’m glad that her career has suffered. What’s telling to me is that Shonda Rhimes has since called both TR and Katherine messy, so there was definitely more to the story than the public was made aware.

    • Twofer says:

      @Hiddlesgirl

I have a feeling yours will be a controversial comment but I agree. Isaiah messed up big but going by the gossip from the set, TR and Heigl tried to ride the problem into bigger storylines. That and if I recall correctly they started isolating, insisting on being able to control shooting schedules so they wouldnt deal with the rest of the cast. TR had alot of support from cast members following the incident and he went and squandered it by posturing as some kind of diva.

    • truthSF says:

And the way they bitched about the show, and kept complaining about wanting to leave after destroying Isaiah’s career made me see what ungrateful vindictive bitches those two were.

    • Mia4S says:

Interesting take and I agree there were no saints in the situation, but, Washington was the one who grabbed the mic at an awards show and repeated a homophobic slur. He embarrassed Rhimes and dug his own grave.

      • Twofer says:

        @Mia

Oh I definitely agree Washington was in the wrong (although I would argue that second slur was evidence of stupidity rather than malice – you know, denying having used a slur by using the very same slur). Either way I am not fighting his corner, just wanted to make that clear.

    • mayamae says:

Everyone in that whole situation was horrible. Patrick Dempsey – supposedly not even on set when the incident happened – slammed Isaiah Washington. It wasn’t just KH and TR. When Isaiah was given an opportunity to clarify, he pushed his foot even farther into his mouth.

I was heartbroken because he and Cristina were my favorites, but IW mishandled the whole thing. I think Shonda Rhimes is very quick to punish her actors and handles things in a very unprofessional manner. She did not have to fire IW, but she did. And then she took her anger out on KH and TR.

      • Farah says:

Washington physically assaulted Patrick. And then called TR a slur twice, once on set, and another in the press of the Globes. He ruined his career. I don’t hate Heigel for her take on that situation. She was 100% in the clear of that.

      • I Choose Me says:

Um, wasn’t it a fight WITH Patrick Dempsey that precipitated the whole thing? The way I remember it, Isaiah was pissed that Dempsey was late to set (apparently this was an old beef) and heated words got exchanged, somebody tried to choke somebody then Isaiah said something about not being a little f-word like TR, which I guess was supposed to mean that Dempsey couldn’t push him around.

I think there were a lot of tensions and egos gone large on that set and the most ridiculous thing to me was Isaiah going to rehab for his homophobic comment. All I know is that the story lines went to sh*t not long after. That whole Izzy/George hook up was the worst. And I hate that Isaiah’s firing meant the death of Burke & Yang.

      • holly hobby says:

Actually if I remember the gossip, IW was fired on the insistence of ABC (who owns the show), not Shonda. I think Shonda was willing to make a concentrated effort to give him a second chance (see the counseling he did and him doing the mea culpa circuit in the aftermath). He even commented on this in an interview. He did everything ABC asked him to do and he was still let go.

What he did was wrong but if Hollywood is willing to forgive pedophiles (cough cough, Roman Polanski, cough cough, Pervert Allen) then he shouldn’t have his livelihood taken away too.

My folks always told me that it was wrong to take away someone’s livelihood. That if I wasn’t a manager, I shouldn’t be involved in ending someone’s career. Katie and TR did not. More so Katie because during the aftermath I saw her on every gossip tv show night after night banging the anti IW drum. TR more or less clammed up or let his buddy do all the talking.

I think Shonda was bitter that IW was let go. To honest, he and Cristina had such a good rapport. More so than Owen. He was just a well written character. So she makes Izzy cpr a deer and have ghost sex and pretty much eliminated TR’s screen time.

Pay back is a bitch right?

      • mayamae says:

I didn’t remember that, I just remembered that PD was an asshole as well. It’s a shame IW couldn’t make his valid point without resorting to homophobic slurs.

  23. Sam says:

I re-watched “Knocked Up” for the first time in a long time last night. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Judd Apatow was punking her through that entire film. He basically wrote her character as a shrew that you couldn’t really like. Even though, in the grand scheme of the film, her character is mostly in the right and should be sympathetic, you wind up rooting for Seth Rogen the entire film and thinking she’s being mean to him. That character could have been so much more identifiable, but Heigl just cannot pull off a “likeable” character. At some point, people are going to realize that she is simply not likeable and audiences aren’t going to watch her try to carry a show.

    • Deedee says:

I never found anything amusing in that movie, and ur right, heigl was not a sympathetic character.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I think that was part of Heigl’s problem with the movie, though. She essentially said the same thing, but said it felt kind of sexist.

      • Kate says:

I know a lot of people were pissed she’d say that, after all she signed on to the movie after reading the script, but Apatow shoots a lot of film and the final cut of his films often doesn’t bare a lot of resemblance to the script.

Knocked Up is one of my ‘put it on for background noise’ movies, and on re-watches it’s pretty messy and really obvious that random scenes were just kind of stitched together. The characters aren’t consistent at all. Heigl’s character is all over the map, in some scenes she actually is relatable and nice and fun, in others she’s got a real stick up her butt, and it’s totally random as to how she’ll be in each scene. I’m pretty sure Heigl thought she was playing a much more well-rounded character but 90% of the scenes where she’s not a shrew got cut, so I can understand her being annoyed when she saw the final cut. It’s not like she said anything hundreds of commentators weren’t already pointing out.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

Over-rated movie in my book, the funniest bits were him and his buddies.

  24. Anti-fan says:

She doesn’t take any responsibility for herself! She shot off her big mouth and bit the hand that feeds her. Criticize the hard-working writers? What a fool. She acted like she thinks she’s the grande dame of theater. She ruined Grey’s with her over-acting, entitled attitude and snottiness. It was such a relief when she left and I could watch the show again. I would never watch anything that she is in. But she did this to herself.

  25. Kelly says:

I like her. But her future career is questionable.

  26. Faye says:

Unpopular opinion, I know – but I like her and I *do* think she was given a raw deal. I’m not denying that she’s shown a lack of tact and discretion that she shouldn’t. However, many of the things she’s said have been right (re portrayal of women in Apatow movies and in Hollywood). Male actors have said and done way worse than her and still gone on to have great careers. I don’t say this often, but I honestly believe her main crime was being a “mouthy” woman who pissed off the wrong men in Hollywood.

    • Bridget says:

Heigl’s problems apparently go way beyond being a little outspoken (even the Apotow guys said what she said wasn’t that bad, but what offended them was the fact that she never even called to apologize). She has a rep for being very, very unpleasant to work with and her momager just straight up berates people working with them for the smallest offenses (craft services not being what they want, etc). And take a look back at Heigl’s interviews: have you ever heard her say something nice or gracious about the people she works with? It isn’t her being outspoken that’s held her back, its her being really, really unpleasant to be around.

      • Faye says:

The “unpleasant to work with” stuff I’ve never seen confirmed by anyone she actually worked with. And even if so, while not nice, it hardly makes her unique. Is she worse than Christian Bale throwing things and cursing out the crew?

And yes, actually, I have read interviews where she said nice things about Shonda Rimes, for one.

      • mayamae says:

She spoke the truth about the writing on Grey’s sucking and the fact that Knocked Up was misogynist. Some people get away with that kind of thing, some don’t. I don’t hate her. I find her very likeable with her kids, and she doesn’t seem to use them for publicity.

If she is difficult, that came with fame. She was a busy actress at least since her teens. She reminds me a lot of Brooke Shields – not that Brooke ever had a bad working reputation, but her mother totally controlled her and eventually ruined her career. Brooke didn’t break away from her mom until her thirties, and with the help of Andre Agassi.

I think KH can be sympathetic. I loved her with Denny on Grey’s, and she made me cry when he died. She was also very likeable in a hokey pseudo-Christian love story called Love Comes Softly.

      • Assh**ealert says:

Faye in need to see the interview about Shonda , links evidence……

      • Bridget says:

@Faye – it was in Variety, one of the biggest trade publications. And considering that Heigl’s threatened to sue a Duane Reade for tweeting a photo of her carrying a DR bag, there’s no doubt that she would have sued had Variety been wrong because that was pretty damning. She has publicly said how much she would like to re-visit Grey’s and Shonda won’t have her back. No co-star of hers wants to work with her again (have you noticed the lack of repeat co-stars) and it got to a point where they had a hard time even casting someone to play opposite her (see: Jason O’Mara as the love interest in the Stephanie Plum movie). And of course, criticising the supposedly misogynist Knocked Up and then following it up with The Awful Truth which was horribly sexist… Heigl’s not outspoken, she’s just unpleasant and her mother is worse.

      • Sarah says:

@Faye: Bale had one isolated incidence in a career spanning over 25 years. . Also he never threw anything at anyone and apologized immediately. You seriously can’t compare his situation to someone like Heigl who would never be anything better than an average actor on her best day while he happens to be one of the most versatile talents around. And unlike her, Bale really is not hard to work with since some of the best directors working today, who can get anyone to be in their movies, work with him over and over again.

    • starfan says:

      @Faye

I agree. They wouldn’t even report & make a big deal about half the stuff if she was a guy.

    • NEHA says:

I don’t think it’s the fact that male actors can get away with it, and female actresses cannot. I think it’s a matter of who’s replaceable or not. Christian Bale isn’t easily replaceable; he’s an Oscar-winning actor and the lead in one of the highest-grossing movie franchises ever. Katherine Heigl, on the other hand, can be replaced by pretty much any pretty blonde who can read. Also, CB has ONE isolated incident, whereas the THR report showed that KH has had multiple incidences . She has been called many, many times out both in person (Shonda, Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow, etc) and anonymously (again, read the THR report).

    • Jayna says:

I agree. I enjoyed her in movies. She deserved to be knocked down a peg or two, but sometimes I feel it’s just overkill. I don’t get people that are rooting for her career to totally implode and fail completely.

      • holly hobby says:

Can you say the same about Mel Gibson or Isaiah Washington? One incident and they never worked again. Her’s was a constant trainwreck.

      • cr says:

@holly hobby: Mel Gibson was waaaay more than just one incident. And he had a lot of defenders, and still does, for a very long time.

    • holly hobby says:

Well if she was right, then why did she turn around and exec produced the Ugly Truth. Very much the same type of movie as Apatow’s and the Apatow crew gleefully pointed that out to the press.

She’s not just a mouthy woman, she’s not nice to the help and coworkers. In my book, that’s a raging difficult person.

    • holly hobby says:

See the Letterman interview where she bitched and moaned about how Grey’s was inhumane for making her work 16 hours a day. She conveniently forgot to mention that they had to double down the work schedule because she was filming the Ugly Truth. How ungrateful and untruthful is that?

There are many many stories in the press about her being horrible to work for and it’s not just because she has a strong opinion.

Shannen Doherty was equally difficult (she was fired on 2 Aaron Spelling shows!) so where is she now? That’s right late night tv stumping for some online educational program.

    • kibbles says:

A lot of people in Hollywood act like Heigl and get away with it. Look at Gwyneth Paltrow, Mila Kunis, and there was a post today on Ellen Degeneres being controlling and not so nice to staff and Portia. And we all know that there are a lot of male jerks in Hollywood who are even worse or who are accused of crimes (Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Terry Richardson).

Heigl’s mistake was that she was a budding actress on the cusp of A-list when she did all of this then made a lot of bad movie choices. She peaked at Knocked-Up then publicly trashed the film and was already on a decline in her career with horrible rom-coms. Second, not only was she demanding, her momager was even worse.

There is nothing particularly special about Heigl and she was never really A-list talent to begin with. I think even without the bad PR, she would have had to go back to television, but at least the public would be more welcoming. A B-list actress like Heigl should just be thankful when she gets movie and television roles and make sure she doesn’t publicly come off as a b*tch so she can maintain a solid fan base.

      • HappyMom says:

Gwyneth and Mila are not known for being difficult to work with though-not really an apt comparison. Heigl and her mother are known for being horrible to everyone they encounter. You can get away with being rude to people interviewing you (see Mila) but if you’re awful to everyone you’re working with it’s going to be the kiss of death to your career.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

I used to like her and then she started talking. Not the first time I’ve had this reaction to an actor or actress. I don’t like her attitude, she’s unprofessional, and it’s not just her big mouth. I love Kathy Griffin and she has one of the biggest mouths out there and offends everyone. I also like Joan Rivers, she crosses the line all the time but I do find her funny. Heigl lacks respect for her employers and her co-workers. She shoots her mouth off at the expense of their product. She can say whatever she likes but an attitude like hers will get you nowhere in HW, male or female.

  27. Lahdidahbaby says:

Bad career, bad, BAD career, for betraying Katherine like that. Grrrrrr! >:-(

  28. Shelby says:

Did she actually say “Live off the land?” quite laughable

  29. dorothy says:

Used to love her. Then read about what a horrible person she is to work with. That, coupled with her mother, really changed the way I looked at her.

Fire your mom, get a real manager and be a decent person. That’s the way to get your career back.

    • holly hobby says:

Ellen Pompeo said awhile back that what Katie did was sign a long term contract and then try to wiggle out of it because her movie career took off. It was a very matter of fact statement but that says it all.

Breach of contract players: Farrah Fawcett, David Caruso and Katie Heigel. No one’s film career took off.

  30. M says:

Her reputation for talking badly about the people she has worked with is what made her career drop. If you do it 1 time, fine mistake, but to constantly do it is just a no no. Even as far back as from the set of Roswell, those kids who played the characters were getting a bit too much with their attitudes after a while, her included.

Look at others who were just like her and see what they are doing now. Mike Myers was horrible, Val Kilmer was another one, Shannen Doherty and there are some others. Heck there are a few lists out there of the people with bad reputations because of their behaviour.

Too many actors get this ego after a while, thinking they know everything and should treat others like crap.

Katherine might be getting another chance with this tv show, so she better use it wisely.

  31. Izzy says:

What an a-hole. She never seems to fault her own behavior for driving others away.nshe just blames her “outspoken nature.” This offends me, I’m outspoken, yet manage to treat people around me, including colleagues, with respect, and not trash them to others.

  32. Joh says:

I thought the last pic of her sitting on the couch was Lindsey Lohan.

  33. HatetheletterK says:

Her career betrayed her? When you don’t have much talent to start with, and then alienate people in the business with your nasty personality, I say she betrayed herself. I do like the blue dress on the cover though.

  34. Altariel says:

Her career betrayed her? She was on an upward trajectory, people loved her character on Grey’s Anatomy (from what I heard), she was everywhere…..SHE blew it with her unimaginable attitude!! She’s still fortunate anyone will work with her. Not looking like that pretty head learned anything. Wow, just wow.

  35. Penelope says:

KH looks like Mario Bello on that cover, not at all like herself.

She certainly has her work cut out for her, but everyone loves a good comeback story. She needs to settle down a bit and realize that she doesn’t have to say everything she’s feeling and that she quite possibly doesn’t know everything there is to know. She definitely comes off as full of herself much of the time.

That said, for some reason I like her (she was good in GA, 27 Dresses, and Knocked Up) and wish her luck! Oh, and she does a ton of charity work for animals–that counts for a lot insofar as what kind of person she is.

    • Bob Loblaw says:

I get the sense she has zero self awareness which is why she keeps making these insensitive, ill-conceived comments.

  36. Meg says:

the dress they have her in on the cover is everywhere-charlize theron wore it in black and white on a mag cover recently, anna kendrick wore it too-this dress must be floating around every photo shoot right now

  37. Jen says:

Whoever shopped this pic needs to make her upper arms the same length, and there’s no way her waist is that tiny.

  38. GirlyGirl says:

Lousy career, why did you insist on breaking Katherine’s heart?

    (sniff)

To Heigl – Hey idiot… shut up.

  39. Marianne says:

Did she do too many Rom-Coms? Yes. She was the rom-com queen for awhile. However, I haven’t seen anything from her that suggests she could pull something gritty off. She’s a good, not a great actress.

Plus, if you want to blame your career taking a nosedive admit that it was your attitude problem that did it in. THAT IS THE REAL REASON!

  40. amanda says:

don’t any of these magazine talk to each other?

with the literally MILLIONS of things to put people in for the covers of magazine, you’d think we wouldn’t see the same dress on two different covers (and one inside image i think) on three different women

    http://www.elle.com/cm/elle/images/vv/elle-04-july-issue.jpg

    boring!

  41. I Choose Me says:

Honestly as much as I detest her attitude, I think she’s very watchable onscreen. Izzy and Yang were my fave characters on Grey’s. Also, I loved 27 dresses and I don’t care who knows it.

  42. Lucy2 says:

She is an executive producer on her show, so she will have writer ‘s room input. Sorry, writers.
I’m amazed at how she worded this. Her career problems are her own doing, and this show will be more if the same if she doesn’t change.

  43. LAK says:

……and that’s how she ruins her projects, by not accepting that she isn’t a writer and or able to create something out of the material that enhances it as opposed to making it worse.

  44. cr says:

The sweater pic makes her look like a cross between Kim Cattrell and LiLo.

  45. Overrated says:

She’s a walking PR disaster and honestly, she did this all to herself!

Who’s going to hire an actress who whinges about a film in which she’s the lead instead of promoting it?

Who in their right mind would hire someone who withdrew herself for an Emmy nomination because the writers – not herself – weren’t good enough (Grey’s)?

I’m not saying actors don’t have a right to speak out. I like KH; she seems like an honest and open person; but she went too far. And begging to be taken back by Grey’s Anatomy was the sign she’d hit bottom careerwise. In the end it’s a business and you have to walk a fine line if you want to be “yourself” but still a working actor. She’s had more opportunities than 99.99 per cent of those out of work actors in LA.

  46. bettyrose says:

I loved Roswell. Only reason I clicked this thread.

  47. jasmine says:

that blue dress looks like she’s wearing a baseball or something…its really odd and not flattering

  48. Slim Charles says:

Kaiser, you nailed it! The comment about being in the writers room tells all.
