Mel Gibson on Shia LaBeouf: ‘My heart goes out to the poor guy’

Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf has been getting papped almost daily since his Cabaret meltdown and arrest. He’s not in rehab (yet), but he’s been carrying around the big blue AA handbook in plain sight. His days are spent going to the gym and attending AA meetings. I hope he’s on the mend. Shia’s a mess, but he’s been a mess for awhile. He has lots of work to do.

Mel Gibson has decided Shia needs some public support. Mel Gibson is the last person who should be trying to repair anyone else’s image. Dude still doesn’t comprehend his own situation. But Mel feels bad for Shia, so Mel is defending his fellow troubled white male in a video interview with IndieWire:

On Shia’s recent meltdowns: “When I see someone like Shia LaBeouf with the bag on his head and stuff, my heart goes out to the poor guy. I think he’s suffering in some way. People are in line to sort of point the finger at him and say that he’s this, that, or the other. It’s easy to judge. But I’m sure he’s going through some kind of personal, very painful, cathartic thing that he has to exorcise and get out there.”

Mel thinks Shia will be fine:“He’ll probably play it out and come back … He’ll be all right. I actually like the kid. I think he’s good.”

[From IndieWire]

If I was Shia LaBeouf (and I’m not, because I shower), Mel’s words would seem depressing. Some people might think that Mel’s heart is in the right place, but does Mel Gibson even have a heart? The larger problem is that Mel is dragging Shia down to his own level. Shia does have problems. He’s a douche, and he needs to deal with his substance abuse and anger issues. But going baghead at a film premiere and grabbing french fries are very different acts than spouting off racist rants and punching women. Mel needs to stay out of Shia’s business. Ugh, I’m siding with Shia LaBeouf on something.

“My heart goes out to the poor guy, unless he’s Jewish. Then he can eff off and deserves all the hate in the world.” Fixed that for you, sugar tits.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Or female. Then I’d punch him in the face.

    • Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Lol! It’s especially funny coming from Mel, because Shia is Jewish. Perhaps there was a bigger (self-serving) motive behind Mel’s public comments about Shia then?

      • Santolina says:

No, you know I’ll be Mel didn’t know Shia was Jewish. He’s so deeply and pathologically full of hatred for the Jews that I’ll bet he wouldn’t have said it, otherwise.

    • Jill says:

I thought Shia was Jewish. He may be.

    • gefeylich says:

Actually this was my extension: “My heart goes out to the poor guy. It’s tough out there for entitled douchebags who act out all the time. And I should know!”

    • evadstructn says:

“Sugartits” is what he called the female cop who arrested him, yeah?

  2. Lori says:

    I thought Shia was Jewish?

  3. aims says:

I agree being a spoiled brat versus a racist women beater doesn’t seem like an even match. Shia is a jackass, but I would take his bullshit any day over Mel’s.

  4. the original bellaluna says:

    “Poor guy” my arse.

    • reddy says:

I don’t believe a word about him getting treatment or rehab unless he stops wearing his method-acting combat boots. The demise started with those and I think he still believes his actions are art.

  5. Jaderu says:

Gary Oldman defends Mel and then Mel defends Shia. Goodness, this Douche version of pay it forward is kind of sweet. Except not really.

  6. INeedANap says:

There seems to be a lot of douchebags defending douchebags lately. I’m referring to the Gary Oldman stuff too. Bah. Let them all have each other somewhere remote so they can leave the rest of us alone.

  7. FingerBinger says:

A lot of people hate Mel and he deserves it. Mel was also one of the few people that helped/reached out to Robert Downey Jr. when he was going threw his trials and tribulations. I think he knows exactly what he’s talking about.

    • Arock says:

I don’t think it’s charity/empathy as much as it is a god complex with Mel Gibson.
Shia is a bag of d—. His antics must be brought on by mental issues, drugs, whatever because he was never this good if an actor. And until he stops wearing those combat boots and that sweaty scowl I have zero interest.

    • N says:

      Absolutely.

  8. pwal says:

It’s a bit premature to feel sympathy for Shia. All of the bad things that was said about him was the result of his bad behavior and his singular indifference to anyone not Shia.

If he deigned to take a prolonged seat and maybe get therapy and definitely stop the douchey behavior would stop the career from bleeding out.

For me, Mel’s sympathy just comes across as a veiled lamentation of ‘White Man’s Burden’.

  9. videli says:

They can get together and establish a Douchebag Internationale.

  10. Eleonor says:

When Mel Gibson supports you you know you’re a mess.

  11. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

With those new teefs all I can see is Blanche Devereaux.

  12. Hillshmill says:

Is it bad that I think Shia is carrying around the AA book so publicly just for more attention? Or it’s a PR move? It just doesn’t feel genuine to me.

  13. Assila says:

i think Mel was one of the few who reached out to Britney when she was in trouble… we are all multidimensional persons, why is it hard to believe?

  14. GeeMoney says:

Mel Gibson may be a crazy douche, but I’m sure there’s part of him that’s caring. Not to mention, Mel is a “recovering” alcoholic as well, so I’d like to think he genuinely knows how Shia feels.

  15. Liz says:

Mel has a very mean, angry streak about him. Mel, Gary and Shia have a lot in common. I hope they have each other’s phone numbers so then can commiserate together. The chief problem with all of them cannot be blamed on mental illness. They’re all assholes. Lol!

  16. Kate2 says:

Anyone think MG looks like a weasel or a ferret in that picture? I’m getting a distinct rodent-vibe. I’m not even being cute and trying to make a connection to his personality. I literally think he looks like an extra from Ratatouille in that picture.

  17. AryaMartell says:

Isn’t Shia Jewish? I’m surprised Mel had something nice to say to a Jewish person.

  18. kc says:

Because Mel knows the system of Hollywood and who controls Shia behind him. Ever since Passon of Christ he is being attacked by this system in the Hollywood. I believe that Mel is essentially a good guy.

  19. Chris says:

That Indiewire interview was a puff piece. The woman interviewing him was clearly a friend. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went over the questions she was going to ask before they started filming.

    • Sam says:

Naw, she’s not a friend, she’s just a prominent journalist who has interviewed him a bunch of times over the years.

She was shrewd about the questions she asked. Instead of directly asking Mel about his problems, she asked him what he thought about troubled actors like Shia. And instead of getting defensive, Mel opened up. That’s skilled interviewing.

  20. Jene Byrnes says:

I agree Mel isn’t the most credible person here, but he does have a history of stepping in to help other actors. He’s the one who helped Robert Downey, Jr. get his career back on track, I believe he paid Downey’s insurance bond when the studio was reluctant to do so. Gibson also helped out Brittney Spears during her meltdown, gave her a quiet place to detox and get therapy.

While this doesn’t totally negate Gibson’s awfulness, I think it’s a bit of a mitigating factor. He should not be legally allowed to enter into intimate relationships, or perhaps given a chemical castration to quell the violence? But he has shown a lot of compassion and understanding for fellow actors who have hit the skids, and has been willing to step in when other people pulled away from the trainwreck.

So, still damnation-bound, but perhaps assigned a different circle of hell?
