Kate Upton won’t say ‘never’ to posing for Playboy: should she do it?

Kate Upton

Kate Upton has a new interview with GQ UK to promote her Gillete sponsorship. The deal includes Upton posing in photos alongside both hairless dudes and guys with happy trails. It’s a nice gig if you can get it, right? Kate has a huge fandom of ladmag readers. She does have female detractors, but just as many of us adore her because she’s broken the mold of socially accepted body types on runways and catalog spreads.

Kate talks about many topics during this interview. She addresses her crazy SI Antarctica shoot and admits it was torture. Kate’s a native Floridian, so it must have been awful. All temps below freezing blend together for me, but going almost naked in a polar atmosphere is unthinkable. Kate also talks about male grooming and whether she’d ever take it off for Playboy. I’m ambivalent about Upton’s high-fashion ambitions in combination with a risqué shoot. Several supermodels (most notably, Kate Moss) have done Playboy, so why should it be any different for Upton? We’ve already seen most of Kate’s bod in her SI shoots already. Plus the SI body paint stuff, which you can google in your spare time. Here are some GQ UK excerpts:

On dudes who smell bad: “If you think that someone smells bad then that usually means that you’re not attracted to them. It’s like your body is rejecting them. It’s pheromones.”

Can guys overgroom? “I think there is a fine line between grooming when you’re confident and you appreciate yourself, and grooming because you’re insecure. I think some guys try to please what other people think they should look like, instead of knowing how they feel the best in themselves. I’m constantly talking to my male friends or someone I’m dating about how important it is to take care of yourself. I feel like everything is catered toward women and that’s what’s so great about Gillette: they are making men more aware about how to take care of yourself.”

Does she dig hairy backs? “I think it’s all matter of personal preference.”

On her SI Antarctica shoot: “I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody. I’m from Florida so I’m not good in the cold, I hate being cold. Hate it. I’m just complain-ey and miserable. Before I left I was in denial. But it was an awesome experience and now anytime anything’s too tough for me I’m like, ‘well I did Antarctica in a bikini’ so it’s a bit of a motivation because I know that I can do it. And I’ve also learned to say no since then.”

She doesn’t like doing runway shows: “You know why? Fashion shows are not collaborative. It’s only about the designer, so I get bored in that situation. There’s also a weird energy backstage – it’s a little too aggressive, I prefer a relaxed, happy environment. I love everybody to be happy on set because I think if everybody’s having fun you get the best photos. So I usually go out of my way to have good energy whenever I’m shooting. You can’t do that in a fashion show because it’s not a collaboration: it’s really not about you.”

Will she do Playboy? “I never like to say never because there are circumstances that I could do pretty much anything if it inspires me and if I think that it’s cool at the time. But right now, at this point in my career, I’m not doing Playboy.”

Did she watch World Cup? “No, I didn’t. I do like sport but I don’t really understand soccer and so not understanding just means I’m not interested. But I think it’s exciting that everyone else is excited about it. Maybe if I had been in a London bar or something, I would have gotten into it.”

Do guys ask her out? “I don’t know. I’m not really aware of who can’t approach me because I consider myself an approachable person and I like meeting new people, so if they can’t approach me I don’t think it’s an energy I’m putting out.”

What should a guy fix her for breakfast? “I always feel great after green juices and I always have eggs in the morning. I think a little bit of everything is good in moderation. But if a guy was going to cook for me I would eat whatever he put in front of me!”

[From GQ UK]

I laughed a little at the question about hairy backs. It really depends on the couple and all other factors. No one wants a guy with an Austin Powers carpet in the back seat, but a little patch is fine, right? Really. Embrace the patch. It’s something to grab onto.

On the subject of Playboy, I think Kate will eventually go there. Playboy is no big deal at all. Their photoshoots are relatively classy, and Ms. Upton would look amazing in an anniversary issue. Someday. She has better things to do right now.

  1. Victoria1 says:

Hairy backs are gross, there fixed it for you Kate.

Next – Florida people always complain when it drops below 70! Ugh, annoying. I had to listen to a couple last night bitch and moan because it was a nice breezy July night but it was “cold”.

    • kikikat says:

For South Floridians the normal daytime temp is in 90s with humidity (real feel is well into the 100° this time of year)…so 70-75°is 20 degrees colder than our bodies are used to. We aren’t wimps….our thermometer is just set higher 🙂

      • Petee says:

Same way here.I live in the desert and it can get up to 120.We have humidity now so in August it is brutal.I went to Florida a few months ago and really liked the weather.Yes so are bodies are set at different temperatures.Victoria1 come my way and go hiking in the summer and be comfortable.I am not trying to be mean just honest.

      • Sighs says:

Yes. It took me a few years to thicken up my skin when I moved away.

    • ScrewStewrat99 says:

Aww, don’t find it annoying! We don’t know any better! Specially if you’re born there and haven’t gone anywhere else. I lived there my whole life until almost two years ago when I moved to Knoxville. I saw snow for the first time and actually experienced winter for the first time. It’s intense lol

    • Sighs says:

I’m from Florida and I love really cold weather. But, I have lived in quite a few other places, and I still refuse to swim unless it’s the temperature of warm bath water.

    • snowflake says:

hey victoria1, just curious, where are you from? I live in florida, originally from Missouri and yes, I have become a wimp since I moved here. lol.

      • CG says:

Snowflake, are you my mom? She moved to Florida from Missouri (where she had lived her entire life) several years ago and within a year or two she was all “the temperature was 72 when I got up this morning, I had to turn the heater on!” I live in the Northeast so I just rolled my eyes. :p

    • aenflex says:

Whatever! I grew up in New England, and have lived in FL for 15 years now. Anything below 65 IS cold, whether you happen to like it or not 🙂

  2. Stephanie says:

I know there are a lot of mixed feelings about Kate, but I find her to be very beautiful and likable. I wish her tons of success!

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I like her, but I laughed at her complaining that fashion shows are not collaborative because “they’re not about you.” I’m not sure that’s what collaborative means, Kate.

    • mimif says:

Maybe she didn’t mean that literally. Irregardless, I could care less about Kate. 😀

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

        You don’t think she’s epic?

      • mimif says:

        Not even awesome or amazing.

      • sauvage says:

You guys are, like, really mean, you know? I mean, really.

Ladies, I love your wit. That’s why I love reading the comments on Celebitchy.

        *chapeau*

      • Kiddo says:

Ahem. (taps fingers of right hand, one at a time, in order, while making a sourpuss face)

      • Lady Macbeth (ex HiddlesF) says:

Irregardless, she is literally awesome! Any time she appears on here, there is an epic length of comments!
Oh well I couldn’t care less lol

  4. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

She looks like Blair from “the facts of life” so yes, she should do Playboy. George, on the other hand….

    • bettyrose says:

Good call! And Blair who was supposed to be the beautiful glamorous one wasn’t skinny at all by today’s standards.

      • Renee says:

Actually, at one point the producers told Lisa Welch to lose weight…

      • Petee says:

The first season or 2 she was very slim. She was told to lose weight after she gained some and it made it worse. As a matter of fact all those poor girls were told to lose weight a few years later.

  5. Kiddo says:

Since I didn’t know her history, frankly, I thought she came from a Playboy centerfold, or something like that. I don’t think it’s a good idea for her to do Playboy, now. She’s not that far into her career, she hasn’t shown any acting chops, she’s already registering as the sex symbol type in roles, with no substance, so this will only solidify that typecast. At the same time, she is already known, so she doesn’t have to go that route to get noticed, KWIM?

    • Anony says:

I agree with Kiddo. I think it depends upon a woman’s career and her aspirations. I just know her as a pretty face with big breasts who can’t act. Posing in Playboy would likely solidify that for me, personally. If she want to be an actress with more important roles she should put it off til after her career is more established. A woman who is established is less likely to suffer the stigma of having posed in a nudey magazine.

    • mata says:

Agreed. Playboy isn’t nearly as relevant as it used to be. The celebrities who pose for it tend to do be has-beens or almost-beens trying to boost their career or make a career comeback. At this stage in her career, Playboy would benefit from Kate more than she would benefit from them.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I was thinking the same, mata. Playboy is sort of a has been publication now.

  6. TG says:

She is growing on me. I like her interviews. She could be a politician with her non-answers to practically every question though. But I think she was just trying not to offend anyone person and that is actually a nice thing.

    • Anony says:

She seems really down to earth and kind of likable. I could imagine myself giving the same or similar answers to some of her questions. I have noticed that guys who I liked as people but didn’t like how they smelled I wasn’t as attracted to. For guys who I was very attracted to I loved their natural scent, would smell their teeshirts, the side of the bed they were on after they left. They do say pheremones may play a role in attraction.

    • Montréalise says:

Her answers are diplomatic, which shows that she has put some thought into them. I think she’s smarter than she’s generally given credit for.

  7. maybeiamcrazy says:

That first picture is ridiculous. I like that she sounds very positive.

  8. bettyrose says:

I’m so grossed out by the middle aged dads salivating over her at a family vacation spot. Who thought that was a good idea?

    • kri says:

@Betty-some middle-aged ad exec, I’m guessing. And of course she’ll do Playboy-it’s only a matter of dollars.

  9. Kenny Boy says:

I really like Kate. I think she’s beautiful and charming. But she has broken no molds. Laverne Cox breaks molds. Melissa McCarthy breaks molds. Crystal Renn breaks molds. Being thin and blond with big boobs is one of the oldest and most venerated beauty standards in America. I get that she’s a little different from the usual celebrated models (though I see only slight differences) but Upton is nothing radical.

  10. Nudgie says:

I think Kate is a nice girl. She was blessed with her looks and frankly that’s what got her to where she is – but that is NOT a bad thing.

She could have gone the naked-lewd-raunchy route early on and probably made a ton of money, but it doesn’t seem to be who she is. Either way, I think she is sexy as all hell and seeing a few more bits of skin is not going to make her more sexy.

Keep going Kate. There will always be haters – and admirers.

    • Petee says:

I like her too.She seems to be very sweet and going with all this celebrity right now for what it is worth.I don’t think you will hear stories about her doing drugs and drinking and falling out of clubs and bars. She seems very grounded.I hope she stays this way.

  11. Jayna says:

I like Kate. I love her hair color. They do a great job with the subtle highlights and/or lowlights. Compare the main photo to the story on the home page of Kate and then look beneath at Gwyneth’s yellow, damaged hair.

  12. Tiffany says:

If Kate were to pose for Playboy, it would be the first time I will be interested enough to purchase the issue. I just like her and think she would look great in it.

  13. smee says:

I’ve said it before – the less clothing she has on, the better she looks. (example – that blue mess she’s wearing for her commercial). She doesn’t have a “fashion” shape, but she does have a great bathing suit body. Playboy is very tame – it’s mostly t&a. She should totally do it while she’s in her 20s.

  14. serena says:

Gosh the super gross mental image of someone grabbing to a very hairy back flashed into my mind.. thanks but no.

  15. FingerBinger says:

No she shouldn’t do Playboy. Playboy no longer helps or propels careers like it used to. These days people really do read Playboy for the articles.

  16. Josefa says:

I like Kate a lot. She seems very kind and inoffensive. I don’t mind her building a career around tacky romcoms and the like as long as she doesn’t act like she’s the second coming of Katharine Hepburn for it.

  17. TheCountess says:

She’ll do it as soon as the next “it girl” comes along and Kate needs a way to keep her name relevant.

  18. Lady of Wine says:

why are the guys (with double chins and flabby bodies) in the ad with Kate sooo damn ugly? They couldn’t have used some hot. sexy guys to model alongside her? Ugh.

  19. GIRLFACE says:

I also think of Playboy as kind of a cheap has been publication now. Wasn’t the Teen Mom in there before doing pr0n or something? Call me old fashioned, but it’s a little bit of a trashy career step down to do it, IMO.

  20. OTHER RENEE says:

She seems down to earth and I applaud her for standing up to the body bullies. Her answers seem a little incoherent at times, or maybe I should say mangled. Like she’s trying to get a thought out but somehow it gets twisted.

WHY exactly did they have to go Antarctica for that shoot? Are there no snowy regions that are closer? Or did they use polar bears?

  21. Tig says:

It just seems like she’s Brooklyn Decker 2.0- same coloring, same career choices, date a jock. And Brooklyn had(has?) a much better figure for swimsuits. Next spring or the one after, there will be Kate Upton 2.0.

  22. Zigggy says:

Haha- must admit I like to run my fingers through body hair… it’s manly as f*ck!

  23. Goodnight says:

I’m from a part of Australia where it regularly goes over 110 in the summer. I used to have zero tolerance for anything below about 65 degrees until I moved to an area where it hits 110 + in summer and under 55 in winter. I now vastly prefer the cold to the heat. At least if it’s cold you can easily add layers and warm up. When it’s hot it’s much harder to cool off.

I bitch and moan all summer, but I am thankful for the cold all winter.

To go back on topic, I found Kate’s interview a bit weird. She was asked some very direct questions and she gave such non-specific, almost evasive answers. Some answers felt like the barely touched upon the actual question. It was kind of weird.

  24. LAK says:

Hairy backs??!!!!!! No, no, no. Ever.

  25. Pumpkin Pie says:

I am more worried about the polar bear suffering from heat – saw the headline in daily fail. The Antarctica shoot? Meh. I am sure it was difficult for Kate and all but hey, SI must have decided to shoot there for the shock value. That said, I like Kate, she’s beautiful and smart.

  26. kbomb000 says:

Should she do Playboy? She’s already 99% naked in most stuff she does, why not just go all the way? Seeing nipple not through a gauzy wet tshirt and a landing strip really doesn’t make a difference at this point.

  27. JenniferJustice says:

Please stop. I don’t do well with coy. Of course you will do PlayBoy. As if you wouldn’t? Seriously, we all know yes, of course you will do PlayBoy.

  28. Lauraq says:

Could not agree more with what she said about smell. Granted my ex did have pretty bad hygiene (the extent of which I did not learn until we’d already moved in together), but even freshly showered and with brushed teeth (he brushed his teeth ONCE A WEEK. Seriously. He covered it up with mints, gum, and cigarettes until we moved in together, when apparently he stopped caring), he always smelled off to me.
My current fiancee though…I love the smell of his sweat. Like, I get disappointed when he comes home from work and wants to shower and put on deodorant. I know it sounds gross, but I could just bury my face in his armpit and smell it. Likewise, I’m a long distance runner, and when I come back from my 15-18 mile run on Sundays, he will blatantly grab me and smell me. Fortunately my best friend and I talk about these things and she says she’s the same way with guys she’s attracted to.
