    I love this actually.

  2. Anna says:

So that means that Hemsworth is free to drop the cape (and everything else) and move to Russia for me? YESSS!

  3. may234 says:

That’s awesome.. This shift toward a female lead is significant. More strong women in comics and movies please! Not always warriors, but definitely strong and leading!

    • Lori says:

I hope this doesn’t turn into a races to find the skinniest Hollywood blonde to cast this.

  4. bettyrose says:

I’ve always considered Thor one of the dullest heroes (next to the huge yawn Captain America) but now I’m intrigued.

    • vv says:

You and me both. I was sort of hoping during the Civil War series Cap would stay gone >.>

  5. Shelby says:

Yep, females need more superheros to look up to and stop effing sexualizing them so damn much I don’t wanna see Wonder Woman with bolt on stripper boobs.

  6. pirategirl says:

A woman becoming Thor is not new, if you are familiar with these comics, they’ve done this before.

    • Samtha says:

I think women have picked up the hammer before, but none of them have actually been Thor in the main Marvel universe.

  7. paranormalgirl says:

The thing that bothers me about “Lucy” is that it is based on the faux science that humans use only 10% of their brains. It’s not true, we use almost ALL of our brain, just not concurrently.

    • Mike says:

People get confused with facts and science. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Ag says:

what are these FACTS you speak of? haha

    • Falula says:

This is driving my husband crazy. He showed me a hilarious article where someone used other pseudo-science facts to come up with movie ideas. I think it was on deadspin? Too lazy to check now.

    • M.A.F. says:

It was also pointed out that Lucy is just like Limitless expect w/the leads are different genders.

      • Trillion says:

Yeah, I definitely got that impression right away. Limitless is great. I watched it twice in one week. I’m excited to see Lucy as well.

    • starrywonder says:

Yeah one of my sci-fi friends went to to see X-Men with me and they had a preview of Lucy and he kept sqwaking at the screen “that’s not true!”

  8. Julie says:

I’m not really familiar with the comics, but why didn’t they just make a new female superhero instead of just repurposing an old one?

    • MourningTheDeathOfMusic says:

Thank you! Common sense here, people! Common sense.

    • Side-Eye says:

EXACTLY. This is the most gimmicky thing I’ve seen yet. Its just like racebending characters while ignoring vand failing to use legitimate black heroes that already exist

    • maybeiamcrazy says:

Maybe they want to introduce the already established fandom of Thor to a female superhero. I suppose it would be pretty hard to create a new popular one without an established fandom because women superheroes are rare and unfamiliar.

      • Side-Eye says:

Not if you read comics they’re not.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

Most females fans don’t read the comics and now they might take interest in a woman superhero they already know. I am not familiar with comic books so how many more badass women superheroes there are is bit of a mute point (for me). Or maybe you are right and they really are too lazy to create a new woman superhero.

      • Samtha says:

@maybeiamcrazy, 47% of comic readers are women according to this article: http://time.com/2987551/thor-marvel-woman/.

And there are tons of female superheroes. Too many to list. Some of them (like Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers and her Carol Corps fans) have extremely enthusiastic and dedicated fanbases.

That said, I don’t have a problem with this. Plenty of female characters have taken up the mantle from male superheroes (Carol Danvers, Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, Carrie Kelley/Robin, etc.) in the past.

    • Illyra says:

Yes. I find this whole thing kind of silly…

    • Bread and Circuses says:

As PirateGirl said up-thread, they’ve made Thor female before.

Also, if you read the original Norse myths, Loki changed gender and even gave birth once.

Which isn’t to say they couldn’t have created a new female superhero. I suspect this is all about appealing to female fans without having to build an audience from scratch.

    • lucy2 says:

I can kind of see the arguments of tapping into the existing fan base, but at the same time, I think you’re right. Though who’s to say they can’t do both? Have Thor female AND create a new original female character too.

    • Samtha says:

Perhaps this IS their way of creating a new female superhero. You know the regular Thor will get his powers back (most likely right before Thor 3 is released). My guess is that she’ll get a new name and, if her run as Thor is popular, her own series.

    • M.A.F. says:

Female Thor is for the comics not the movies. The movie Thor 3 will not be based of this new development.

      • Samtha says:

If that’s directed toward me, I know that. My point was that they’ll most likely return male Thor before the Thor 3 movie comes out to capitalize on the sales boost.

If I’m remembering correctly, that’s exactly what they did with Peter Parker and Doc Ock before the Spider-Man movie came out.

Part of the point of Marvel Now is to make it easier for movie fans to cross over to the comics. Thus switching back to the traditional character so movie fans will have something more familiar to buy.

      • M.A.F. says:

I was directing that at everyone. There was a lot of confusion all over thethe net yesterday when news broke. And then reading some stuff in this thread others seemed to get mixed up as well. This new development and the new story line does not go hand and hand w/the movies but maybe it will, who knows. My understanding of the comics are there are different runs of the characters and that is what this is.

    • Mike says:

You get a lot less attention with a new superhero than you do by making a popular male superhero female. I hope they make the story line very good because people will be apoplectic about this. I am really old so I just don’t care anymore ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Ange says:

As a history/mythology fan alone this bugs me. Thor was a dude to the vikings, he should be a dude now. Why not bring in Freya or something? They could make her pretty cool.

NB: I don’t read comics so I have no idea if Freya is actually already there.

    • T says:

They repurpose old ones to create new male superheroes all the time, and no one makes a big deal out of it when that happens (unless it’s Miles Morales, but that came with other issues regarding him being biracial). This is just how comics work, they reboot and retcon and reimagine every few years.

  9. MourningTheDeathOfMusic says:

So instead of them turning Thor into a female, why don’t they create a strong female superhero with her own history and her own trials completely removed from all the established characters already out there?

    • stickershock says:

The fear is that no one will read about this new character, but being heralded under the banner of someone already iconic increases the chances greatly. But superhero comics are a business of status quo. Thor will become thunder again and (Hopefully) the readership that bonded to the female heroine will follow when she gets her own solo title.

  10. Rhiley says:

I think Scott Foley is super adorable and bet he is a terrific dad. Congrats to him and his wife. Also, the Rock is awesome, fanny sack and all.

  11. 'P'enny says:

Thorita has not been created for girls, the illustrations are highly sexualised with boobs the size of madonna’s cones with extra helium balloons. She’s for teenage guys with tissues.

  12. Ari says:

Thor is a god. Now it will be a goddess. She is a woman deemed worthy enough to handle the hammer just like a freaking FROG was once. Male version of Thor will still be around and in the comics. This isn’t brain science and its a nice small progressive change. Creating new characters especially female ones ARE actually done all the time but they are indie comics and the marketing is either expensive or just not that great. Using an iconic character like the god of thunder is smart because it gets people talking hence this blog doing so. I for one am all for it.

    • pirategirl says:

+1 Ari! I was saying earlier this isn’t new, they’ve done this before. Also, people unfamiliar with the comic world don’t know there are great new female characters created all the time ๐Ÿ™‚ But maybe this new buzz will help that area.

  13. eliza says:

I doubt that blind would be about Betty White as she lives in L.A. so why would she be comatose in NYC?

    • greenmonster says:

My guess is Valerie Harper. Wasn’t she diagnosed with Cancer again? Nonetheless very sad.

  14. LAK says:

    Lazy.

They couldn’t come up with a proper female superhero?

This is a mainstream company, they have the deep pockets needed to market a new superhero so this is stupid and pandering to excuse that they introducing a female superhero to a female audience….it would help if the drawings weren’t rendered sexual like every other female character in comics.

    I can’t believe people aren’t outraged.

And also, Thor is taken from Scandinavian mythology. I can’t believe no one is outraged that they would simply change a crucial bit of cultural significance simply to pander to comic geeks.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

They could have at least picked the right brother for the swap — in the original Norse myths, Loki changed sex and even gave birth. ๐Ÿ˜€

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

To a horse too! I’d love to see it happen in the movie.

      • Leah says:

Yeah, but Loki is a villain and does what he wants.

      • Intro Outro says:

        LOL Leah ๐Ÿ˜€

Loki’s spooky offspring are worth a separate series of comic books.

      • icerose says:

They have an adolescent bi sexual Loki in the comics at the moment but they still used adult Loki in Thor 2.I think Thor 3 will still be Chris and Tom. Mind you I would lIke to see Loki as played by TWH shape shift into a women. I am pretty sure he would make a fantastic lady Loki.

    • Miss M says:

      I agree with you, LAK.

  15. Mia4S says:

Meh. It feels like pandering to be honest when there still hasn’t been a female led superhero movie. The odds of this carrying over to the films are miniscule. Plus in 10-12 months it will be a man again. So…meh.

  16. Tiffany27 says:

Lucy looks terrible and I really hate that scene where she asked the man if he speaks English, then proceeds to kill him when he doesn’t.

  17. Lizzy says:

Gwendoline Christie as Thor that is all I am saying.

She would be awesome for this!

  18. Oceansoul89 says:

I wonder which Marvel Universe this is set in? I know there is a black spider man in one universe. Either way this is pretty cool.

  19. GeeMoney says:

If Tara Reid pulled it together for Sharknado 2, does that mean she finally ate something???

And I can’t wait to see “Lucy” with ScarJo either!

  20. Miss Jupitero says:

Now if they could just get rid of the silly underwire boob armor and be realistic.

How abiutGwen Christie as Thor? That would rock.

  21. M.A.F. says:

Doesn’t Loki already turn into a woman in one of the runs of the comic?

If Marvel is smart about this (which we all know they are not), they will give us a Black Widow movie & at the end female Thor comes out! Then bam! A whole slue of female center Marvel films.

  22. Nance says:

    Rule 63?

  23. Fan says:

If the reason is for short of female heroes, create another new female superheroes. They don’t need to turn him into female. It will give me a bad taste watching the previous Thor movies. This is a total nonsense and stupid. It is so clear that the world is turning upside down.

  24. Hayley says:

This is stupid. Why not create a new female superhero instead of changing Thor so drastically that it is no longer the same story? Not a single person I’ve asked about this, and I work in a hospital emergency room where there is a perfect microcosm of society in general, likes this idea. Not one of them said they will follow the story with such a drastic change, and some of them are Comic-con enthusiasts.

    • aquarius64 says:

Or better yet, work with the current roster of super-heroines. This announcement was done for shock value to drum up business. Marvel will throw this in the trash heap the moment they see the comic will not make any money.

      • T says:

Just like they did when they made Captain Marvel a woman, right? That sure did get thrown into the trash heap and wasn’t any good, right?

  25. T says:

First of all, to everyone saying they picked the wrong one because Loki in the myth changes gender, Loki in the comics has done it before
    http://marvel.com/universe/Loki#Loki_Looks_Like_a_Lady

Second, they’re not replacing male Thor (not that I would have a problem if they did). I could be mistaken, but it’s my understanding that “Thor” in this case as being like a title, the male version will most likely be continue to exist in some fashion and return to the name after a year or two. Even if they killed him off to bring her in (or just retconned the whole thing for this particular book), comics tend to exist in a multiverse. Losing a character in one book, doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be gone forever in every other comic. Bringing in Miles Morales as Spiderman didn’t mean Peter Parker was gone forever (although, tbh, I like Miles better and kind of wish Peter Parker would disappear for a while).

Third, introducing a new character through the existence of another is something they do all the time in comics. Captain America, Captain Marvel (which also replaced a male character with a female, and was infinitely better, imo), Ms Marvel, Batman, Batgirl, Blue Beetle, the Flash, and many, many others have all had multiple characters taking on that persona. That’s just how comics work and have worked for decades. In many cases it works out spectacularly well.

  26. Amy says:

I don’t know if most of you don’t pay attention to comics at all. I do because I work in this industry and it’s part of my job. There has long been a complaint of women being reduced to second fiddle in comics, being represented in a physically disproportionate way, and just in general being portrayed as weaker and less important characters. Just like with (nearly) everything, they can be very sexist towards women. I’m not sure what Marvel’s reasoning is with this latest maneuver but my guess it has to do with the not so great representation of female characters in superhero comics (which are totally not my thing, I really don’t get the superhero stuff). I suppose this is a step in the right direction?

  27. Dizzybenny says:

    Thor, goddess of thunder!!!
I know that for 3 days out of a month, the thunder will be deafening. lol

  28. Nic says:

Does that mean that the new female Thor’s love interest will be a woman too. That would be so cool if that’s the case….
