Ryan Gosling ‘has been very supportive’ about Eva’s need to keep things ‘secret’

Now that OK! Magazine broke the story (I still can’t believe that happened) of Eva Mendes’ pregnancy, all of the other magazines are climbing aboard the Speculation Train. First stop for the Speculation Train? Shotgun Marriage Junction. A “close pal of Eva’s” told Life & Style that Eva definitely wants to marry Ryan but it’s all very “eventually.” The source says: “I think they will wed after the baby is born. Eva would love to eventually marry Ryan and be a family with their new baby.” Just FYI, “source”: they’re already a family. A piece of paper doesn’t make you any more of a family, but other than that… it’s their business. I kind of thought Eva was gun-shy about marriage, but God knows these days. The source also says that “Ryan has changed the way she feels about” marriage and she used to think it was “archaic.” Ah, looks like Eva had a detour at Waiting For the Ring City? Meanwhile, People Mag had a decent story:

In the age of social media and cell phone cameras, just how did Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes keep her pregnancy hidden for so long? The actress, 40, who is due in October, “just hasn’t ever wanted anyone beyond her close friends and family knowing more than they had to,” an insider tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “And Ryan is certainly private and always has been.”

Now living together in 33-year-old Gosling’s modest Studio City home, the couple also embraced a lifestyle that aided their efforts for secrecy.

“Their lives completely changed as soon as Eva got pregnant,” says a source. “They used to travel all over the place together and go on hikes with their dogs.”

But in the last few months, Mendes “barely left the house,” adds the source. “Ryan has been taking care of her, picking up food and running errands. He has been very supportive about keeping things a secret.”

The actress, who was last photographed in March, is also proving to be adept at covering up her baby bump as she demonstrated in an L.A. parking garage on July 9. She was also conspicuously absent at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where the couple’s film, Lost River, premiered in May.

What can’t be contained is the pair’s excitement.

“This has been a long time coming,” says a pal. “Ryan and Eva definitely discussed children before. She knows how much he wants to be a dad and he’s going to be an amazing father.”

[From People]

She’s due in October? So… she’s about six months along now? That seems more reasonable than some of the other gossip. Here’s what I don’t get though: “He has been very supportive about keeping things a secret.” It sounds like the secrecy was her call and he’s just going along with it? I swear to God, there is something really fishy going on here.

Oh, and People also says that they’re house-hunting for a bigger place in LA because now they’re just living in her (?) two-bedroom in Studio City.

Liking him more and more. They seem really into each other.
    Love them as a couple.

    • kri says:

I guess it’s possible to be discreet and keep to yourselves if you really want to-Brad and Angie can do it. Other stars do it. So yeah, maybe they are wanting privacy. I won’t hold my breath on them getting married soon, though.

    • blu says:

I do too actually. I can understand her desire to keep it on the DL, as soon as a celeb says they’re pregnant, paps follow them everywhere. Also, maybe she had Integrated prenatal screening, the results of which aren’t available until approx five months. I had that and before knowing everything was OK, I didn’t officially announce anything.

  2. TheOriginalKitten says:

Barf. These stories are reaching a George and Amal-level of nauseating.

That being said, I get the desire for privacy, particularly in their case between the rabid Gostans and Eva being a high-risk pregnancy. She needs to take it easy and avoid stress-inducing situations like smothering paps. Gosling has always seemed pretty private so I have no doubt that this was a mutual decision.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

It’s just a reply for all rumors on them but i yet am tired of this BS

    • Becks says:

      Yes, it’s overkill!

    • QQ says:

EXACTLY! like a Pregnant chick should be so Honored the guy that made her baby with her is sticking around, being solicitous and whatnot?! Give this Man A Congressional Medal Of Honor!

    • OhDear says:

I wish them well with their relationship and the impending whippersnapper, but it seems like they (1) are very aware of how they are perceived and (2) are making a concerted, starting-to-be ham-fisted effort to change those perceptions.

Wish they’d just issue a statement and move on instead of the whole smoke and mirrors thing.

    • blue marie says:

Completely agree OKitt. They’re having a baby, fantastic. Now let’s move on

    • mercy says:

I half expect him to break out with a rendition of ‘You’re Havin’ My Baby’ at this point. 😉 I understand their PR is trying to counter any negative speculation, but I wonder if they realise how silly it sounds to go on about how he cooks and does everything else for her, like pregnancy has turned her into some helpless little woman who never leaves the house.

    • I Choose Me says:

      Yep. Right there with you.

  3. Talie says:

Is he supposed to be anything other than supportive? I hate when media want to give male stars a medal of honor for doing what a father should do.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

      • Sabrine says:

It’s too bad they couldn’t have gone the whole pregnancy without detection. I can see why they tried to avoid publicity and have a much more stress free pregnancy without the media and paparazzi following and hounding them. For the most part they have avoided the speculative remarks, the eyes on her baby bump analyzing and judging , the criticism about her swollen feet in inappropriate shoes, how awful she looks. Good for them hiding it for this long.

  4. don't kill me i'm french says:

I always thought they were a RP stunt for their movie …they seems so mismatching .I guess Gosling is more “pointless” than i thought
As i’m happy for them as i don’t understand why there are so many informations on her pregnancy.Where are the informations on RDJ’s wife pregnacy or Bale’s wife pregnancy?

  5. two_seconds_ago says:

Bull! As if Eva would ever want to keep the news that she’s carrying Ryan Gosling’s baby a secret!!

  6. Abbott says:

I also think something is fishy and will go ahead and say I think it has to do with Gosling. Dude is protesting and leaking stories waaaaay too much. All while indirectly placing the whole secrety secrets fiasco on Eva.

Sounds like he and Ashton Kutcher have the same strategy, but while trying to ensure people you’re not a douche, you end up looking like a bigger douche.

Something stinks and it smells like Pumpkin Spice Latte or Kale or whatever hipster dudes smell like.

    • mercy says:

Which makes me m ore inclined to believe the opposite is true. He wants us to know he’s a good feminist with a strong woman who values privacy. Fine. But I get the feeling that he’s the director in this relationship and she’s adopted his ideas as her own. I could be all wrong, but that’s what it looks like to me.

      • Abbott says:

        Bingo, mercy!

      • Liv says:

So true! They got papped often and I believe they called the paps themselves. The cemetry in Paris was so obviously staged…and out of a sudden they claim they are private and stay at home – that’s fine, but they should stop leaking storys then!

    • Olive says:

This x 100. Contrary to what people are led to believe, I think he’s probably the more dominant one in the relationship and wants things his way. He strikes me as someone who is very self aware and knows the Hollywood game very well. He’s been in this business his whole life and probably knows how to play it to his advantage.

    • Sadie says:

I’ve always had that feeling about him. The fact that he acted like an entitled nitwit on the set of the Notebook confirms it.

      • FF says:

Wasn’t his behaviour on the set of The Notebook common knowledge around the time was dating McAdams?

I’m pretty sure this is old news getting reupholstered because people are reappraising him in light of his relationship with Mendes (and now this pregnancy) and coming back negative; when, to my mind, the consensus on him before this relationship was overwhelmingly positive. He was like Tom Hiddleston is now, and no one could say a bad word about him.

Actually, Tom Hiddleston should announce an engagement to a WoC, I’d like to see the reaction, tbh.

  7. don't kill me i'm french says:

They were able to hide the 6 first months of her pregnancy

  8. Ninja, please says:

America loves their celebrity baby fetishing. What retrograde suzie homemaker garbage this PR machine keeps pumping out

  9. Kay says:

Depending on when in October she is due she could be 7 months. I am due at the end of October and I will hit 7 months in a week and a half.

  10. RobN says:

I can certainly see being 40, having your first kid, and wanting to be as private as possible about it, so I’m not sure why some people are so surprised by this. Things happen, things go wrong, and they didn’t want to deal with it if front of the media.

It seems perfectly reasonable to me. It also seems that she only got papped when she made a phone call to let them know where she’d be, so keeping private pretty much just came down to not making those phone calls anymore. Shouldn’t have been too hard.

  11. mercy says:

I don’t think there’s anything fishy about publicists feeding stories to People, Us, etc. to leave a favourable impression and counter negative speculation. It was going on before their pregnancy. But the not leaving the house bit seems rather sad to me, and I’m not convinced it was only done for health reasons. I think they probably didn’t want their relationship under scrutiny, for a variety of reasons. I’ve never really bought them as a ‘loved up’ couple, and the hard sell going on right now makes me even less inclined to believe it. I’m guessing he wanted a relationship and baby on his own terms and found someone willing to accommodate.

    • Nessa says:

This sounds like the most reasonable explanation for all of this. Your post sounds spot on to me.

  12. Business only says:

Puh leeze. The secrecy was about not wanting to muddy the waters of his directorial debut. The critics ravaged it and now the announcement that they are pregnant. It’s always about business.

    • mercy says:

There’s probably a lot of truth to that. I was wondering when the movie was coming out. When it does, the focus will probably have shifted from the reviews to their new baby. I don’t know if that was planned, but good timing on their part. 😉

  13. andypandy says:

Now we know why this couple wanted some privacy ,Dont know how much day by day blow by blow seemingly made up stories One can take
I really don’t think thier PR people are feeding anyone anything the pregnancy leaked and the tabloids are having a field day That is All

    • mercy says:

I think Us and People (and probably a Canadian gossip blogger) are on the PR wagon. The rest are probably fake. But OK broke the story, so you never know.

  14. Viker says:

Are we going to get one every day? Ugh!

  15. Ginger says:

Having been through a high risk pregnancy myself it’s entirely possible she was put on strict bed rest as I was. She would only leave the house for doctors appointments. That would certainly make sense if he’s doing things for her and no one has seen her lately.

  16. Scarlett says:

Maybe he loves her, realizes that it’s her body and respects her right to announce the pregnancy whenever she wants. I think people are skeptical because we live in an era where…let’s face it…famewhores like the Kardashians feel the need to tweet, pap stroll and post ridiculous selfies, everyday…all day.
I respect her right to want to keep it private. I’m sure she didn’t want to be hounded by paps who would have done anything to get a photo. Also, she probably was weary of some of his rabid fans, who quite frankly have been nasty ever since it was confirmed. Some of the horrible, mysogynistic, and jealous comments made by women — mind you– made me smh. And, why are grown ass women losing their shit over this? It’s hysterical and sad at the same time. Maybe I’m in the minority but I think he loves her and vice versa and he wants to keep her happy and safe. It’s their relationship, their life and they know what’s real or not.

  17. Flounder says:

I feel like they are having a baby, but they are no longer together. That’s the reason for the secrecy!

  18. Maus says:

Maybe she’s just having a difficult pregnancy? It’s possible.

  19. skippy says:

OK, Kaiser. What is the fishy thing that you think is going on here?
    Don’t keep us in suspense.

  20. FF says:

    lol at all this disingenuity.

Bale and RDJ are married and having their second children. These two were having a non-relationship/showmance/live-in PR stunt according to the many who didn’t want it to be true (and still don’t) and the narrative was that they’d broken up.

So news to the extreme contrary is what’s fuelling public interest, in part. There are currently no baby bump pics of Eva so people who don’t want it to be true can still say it isn’t. So this speculation will keep on until the kid is born – at which point everyone will start questioning the parents’ biological credentials by saying the kid isn’t theirs.

The reason the mundane details of their pregnancy makes news is because of what I’ve said before.

When they’re on their second kid and married, I’m sure no one will care then either because the reality will have set in by then, whether people like it or not.
