Is Slumdog’s Freida Pinto secretly married? (update: broken engagement)

fp_1924366_barm_frieda_pint
Allegations came out last week that Freida Pinto had secretly married her college boyfriend Rohan Antao in 2007. My opinion, judging her solely on the British tabloid reports coming out at the time, was that it would make perfect sense for a young Indian couple to only live together if they were married or seriously engaged, but I also gave Freida the benefit of the doubt.

As it turns out, I didn’t need to bother – my first instinct was right. She’s married, and now we have the wedding photos to prove it. Major headache for Freida, although did she really expect to keep it a secret? Just a few days ago, in an interview in People magazine, she was calling herself “single”.

In the photos, Freida can be seen in the embrace of Antao as the ceremonial rites are being performed. They look really happy… too bad she dumped him at the first whiff of fame. Harsh, I know. But I’m really disappointed that this married woman (Fluffy McHomewrecker, perchance?) is all over my little Dev Patel. Maybe Sienna Miller might be better for Dev after all.

Note by Celebitchy: Dev and Freida were supposedly seen “shopping for rings” together in London on Valentine’s Day but it sounds like a possible PR stunt by the jeweler.

Update by Celebitchy: News of the World has a tell-all interview with the jilted fiance, and this party is described as an engagement party, which would explain why everyone is casually dressed, as some of you have mentioned:

In December 2007—within days of Freida winning the role of Latika— Rohan proposed on the rooftop of a bar in Mumbai and the couple celebrated their engagement with a party for 30 family and friends in Goa.

[From News of The World]

Photo agency Fame describes these as wedding photos, although they use the same date and it seems they may have the details wrong:

Exclusive… Photos of the wedding that Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto claims did not take place when she and her college sweetheart Rohan Antao were pictured in Panjim, India in December 2007. The actress allegedly dumped heartbroken Rohan in January 2009 following widespread acclaim for her role on the hit movie.

Oh dear, now this ruins this morning’s News of the World’s scoop

  2. Polly says:

I call B.S. That looks like a birthday party.

  3. Blah blah blah says:

Disappointing. She looked very sweet. Of course, that doesn’t mean she isn’t, most of the time. A lot of people separate, etc., it’s just that her timing is very… suspicious. And sad. Poor guy. I wonder if this will have much impact on her career.

  4. Lisa says:

It’s just a very cheap Indian wedding, that’s why it looks like a Birthday Party.

  5. Miss Wanderlust says:

Maybe it is their engagement party or her birthday party ?
There is a guy in the picture wearing jeans….i know a little bit of the Indian culture….you don’t go to a wedding wearing jeans, a big no no ! lol

If the relationship was ok no movie or big success could have come between them ?
They are still young, not everyone stays with one person their whole life ?
It’s just unfortunate that the break-up happened now….that’s life or Hollywood, hahaha

  6. Gloaming says:

    It’s an engagement party!!

  7. Wow says:

I don’t get what the big deal is or why the public should think any less of her. So she was secretly married and is now either seperated or going through a divorce. Where’s the scandal in that? Janet Jackson was secretly married for a zillion years and hardly anyone knew until she divorced the guy.

This shouldn’t hinder Freida’s career either because in Hollywood, there are married and unmarried couples who are doing a lot worse things than divorcing.

Her ex may just might still be in the bitter stage.

  8. Pont Neuf says:

Even at the risk of sounding very superficial, I have to say this: with her current profile, she could afford to do MUCH better… It wouldn’t surprise me if their relationships dissolved very soon.

Anyhow, I thought that Hindu weddings were very important social events. I doubt that this could be it…

  9. HEB says:

You need to have someone who is familiar with Indian weddings look at these pictures–it looks like one of the many engagement parties that they have before the actual wedding

  10. Bina says:

At the very least she’d be in a wedding dress if it were a wedding.

  11. Baholicious says:

Looks like a low-key party, engagement or otherwise to me.

Insofar as the references to “Indian weddings,” Pinto is Catholic.

I imagine the Catholic wedding ceremony is pretty standard around the world, no matter where her practitioners are but two things stand out:

    1) Observant Catholics always marry in church and
    2) Most priests won’t marry a woman showing that much skin.

  12. Feebee says:

I’m confused. If he only proposed in December 2007 and the above photo does look like more of an engagement party event, when did they have time to get married (let alone in ’07?) Unless actual wedding photos/documentation can be produced then if she says she’s single, she’s single.

This sort of thing happens all the time, though it’s usually a gender reversal. Life changes, people grow apart with different experiences… she’s only 24, it’s not surprising.

  13. becca says:

@Wow: Janet Jackson was famous when she secretly got married correct? Freida wasn’t.

The way it looks to us, she broke up with her fiance/husband in the middle of her newfound fame.

    Blah. 🙁

  14. lara says:

It’s one thing to fall out of love, but a whole another level to try to hide your fiancé/husband and pretend it never happened the way she did.
Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame, gorgeous, I honestly don’t think the success will last much longer.

  15. lrm says:

I think the ‘timing’ is just right—contrary to what people are saying-imagine being thrusted into the spotlight—-dev patel has been saying how surprising and overwhelming it is.
This is why alot of young co-stars end up hooking up,i’m sure: They trust each other, are going through a major, life changing experience together, and it deepends their connection.
I don’t know why people act like it’s strictly a fame, ego move. Well,it sounds more like an emotional support move. How do you integrate a fast track ride like this into your completely different former life, and the people in it?
People change, life is for transformation. Sometimes you can move forward with the same people, sometimes you have to move on.
It doesn’t always mean the person has no integrity or is a cheat. [sometimes, yes, but not always.]

    Thanks for the update CB.

It wasn’t so long ago in the west that boy and girl-banders (as well as teen-idol actors) were forced/very strongly encouraged to pretend that they didn’t have long-term girlfriends/boyfriends in case it hurt their marketability. Don’t see why it should be any different in Bollywood.

We don’t know why they split up, we could speculate all we liked (ex-fiancé getting jealous etc), but we don’t know what happens behind closed doors. The sudden burst of fame and being dragged from post to pillar on the press rounds wouldn’t have helped though.

  17. indian chick says:

No matter how “cheap”/”inexpensive” a wedding is india, they are NEVER EVER dressed this casually.

  18. hmm says:

I’m curious if a man would get the same treatment if he dumped his less than hot girlfriend once he got a little fame? We would call him shallow but we say that she can do much better because he doesn’t have movie star looks. No matter how you slice it, it’s a pretty crappy thing to do to someone that you supposedly love.

  19. deepa says:

no birthdays aren’t celeberated with groom s wearing white formals in India, as she is not hindu it surely looks like a wedding or for sure an engagement celebration I should know have stayed all over India all my life. What a shame Pinto.

  20. Man Cheat says:

It doesn’t look like a wedding party.

It’s a birthday or engagement party.

Not many people on the photo.
