Wentworth Miller ‘feels more fully expressed’ since coming out last year

About 13 months ago, Wentworth Miller came out as gay. He also came out as a man in his 40s, which was more mind-blowing than his homosexuality quite honestly (he’s 42 years old now). Wentworth’s coming out had a political flavor – he packaged his coming out story with a refusal to attend a film festival in Russia following Russia’s “crackdown” on all things LGBT. In subsequent interviews, Wentworth also discussed his struggles with depression and shame, partly because he wasn’t living a completely honest and “out” life when he was in Hollywood’s Glass Closet. Anyway, Wentworth has a new interview with Details and more than a year after the event, he seems to be in a much better/healthier/happier place. Some highlights:

On body image: “There’s a lot of pressure on actors to have a six-pack and everything that goes with it. But that’s never been an obsession of mine. I like being heavier sometimes. It feels like you’re a force to reckon with. Then again, at one point I was about 45 pounds heavier than I am now. I was looking to food as a fix for something missing inside. It was about putting layers of protection around me.”

Dealing with his depression: “I’m part of a group called the ManKind Project. It’s a circle of men I sit in with every week that’s a safe sounding board for whatever’s up for me: good, bad, ugly, really ugly. We know how to respond to someone coming out now—we’ve had that training—but admit you’re sad or that you’ve thought about suicide and people don’t know what to do. With sadness, particularly with men, that conversation is unfamiliar.”

Lifting the burden by coming out: “I feel more fully expressed. After Prison Break, I came to grips with the fact that my public persona was in misalignment with how I actually felt. I was out to a handful of people in my twenties, and once I hit 30, I was out to family and friends. But professionally, I was feeding a fantasy. I created this air of “We don’t address that thing.”

Whether he regrets denying his homosexuality in interviews: “My face was on billboards, and I thought it was my job to act a certain way. But I think audiences knew to a certain degree.”

Whether he worries about alienating his straight female fans: “No. The people onscreen aren’t the characters they’re playing. They’re our projection of who we want them to be. I think it’s possible to have a man-crush if you’re not gay or to have a crush on a guy you know to be gay if you’re a woman. Attraction is fluid, and I think our imaginations are strong enough to hold a container for all of this complexity, even if we know on a subconscious level something’s not what it appears to be.”

[From Details]

Wow, he’s really good at this. Like, there’s some touchy-feely language where you can tell he’s been in therapy and he gone through at least one 12-step program, but he’s not bashing you over the head with it. He just sounds… like he’s at peace with himself. Like he’s in a good place, emotionally, psychologically, physically. I hope he finds more work! He’s got some projects lined up and he’s promoting a movie in this piece (it’s a film called The Loft), but he needs more work! I wouldn’t mind seeing him in an ensemble TV show. Or even in a lead role in some kind of procedural (he would be good as a cop).

I have crushes on gay actors and entertainers all the time. Why not? It’s only pretend, isn’t it? And anyway, it seems healthier to crush on a nice gay bloke than a horrible straight one. Hello Mel, Jared, et al. I. Will. Never. Like. You.

I don’t crush on Wentworth, however – he’s gorgeous to look at but not my kinda sexy.

    Glad he’s happier now.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Agree with all statements. I can find a gay actor every bit as attractive and sexy as a straight man. It’s not as if we were in a real relationship, it’s all fantasy anyway. Glad he feels better. The truth will set you free and all that.

    • kate says:

I totally agree with everything you said! Of course you can have crushes on gay actors/ entertainers- why not? I mean it´s a fantasy celebrity crush – nothing real.
I´m glad to see him happier and more at peace with himself. I really liked his interview.

All I can say is . . . Matt Bomer! Don’t know much about Wentworth but his is pleasant to look at.

    • Lilo says:

Anderson Cooper. I rest my case.

    • Kori says:

This! I posted something similar on the Rupert Everett thread previously. It’s all fantasy. If I crush on an actor, gay or straight, in my fantasy I’m not an overweight, 43 yr old, married mother of 3 either. If I’m not those things, he can be straight in the fantasy. It doesn’t stop me from crushing.

  2. Abbott says:

He’s a Yale grad and a crazy talented writer, as well. Stoker was awesome. And I want to bake cookies on his stomach.

    • I Swear says:

Totally agree with the comment on Stoker. I have a pretty good gaydar (I believe) and always thought he was gay when he was on prison break. He was wonderful also in The Human Stain and even in Mariah Carey’s mv…as the most racially ambiguous couple on screen.

    • Adrien says:

I think he’s from Princeton, still very impressive. Lots of surprising things about Wentworth. I didn’t know he’s British and that he’s already in his 40s.
Anyway, I hope he finds more work because he’s really talented.

    • P.J. says:

Oh my God, I LOVE Stoker. It’s such an unusual, creepy, weird, beautifully shot and haunting film 🙂 All that said, I had absolutely zero knowledge of the fact that Wentworth-who I’ve adored since Prison Break-was involved with it in any capacity, much less as its writer!

  3. Dorothy#1 says:

I think he was cast as the Flash in a CW show.

    • Ash says:

Actually, he’s been cast as a different character, although not one I am familiar with. I believe it’s a recurring character.

  4. GiGi says:

I love him! We just finished binge watching Prison Break – he’d never been on my radar before, but I’m a fan, now. I think he’s going to be on a CW show? And I think he’s been writing screenplays, too. I’m glad he’s feeling at peace now.

  5. NewWester says:

He seems like a decent man, who is a peace with himself. It would be nice if producers see this and also what a good actor he is.

  6. Oceansoul89 says:

I’m glad he’s at peace with himself. 🙂

  7. Jess says:

Have to admit I didn’t see this one coming, totally shocked when he came out, I think he’s just adorable and seems like a nice guy. I’m happy he was able to come out and has found peace with it, nothing will stop me from watching him! 🙂

  8. bella says:

He’s handsome and good actor. He did the right thing and now we can see that he’s very well with himself.
I would like to see others actors who still are in the glass closet to come out and live their true lives. How he said: “people know even when nobody talks about it. ”
I really don’t understand why someone accept to live a lie just because wants fame badly. The inner peace is the most important thing to anyone.
Even with fame and success he had to deal with a huge depression and things only got better when he said the true.

    • Kim1 says:

He didn’t come out to his family until his thirties. So fame wasn’t the only factor in keeping him in the closet. He was also afraid of being rejected by his loved ones which happens a lot.

    • Fatty Cakes says:

I don’t think it was about fame for him at all, I think it was just fear of losing the career he enjoyed and worked hard for and having his prospects severely limited. Which is not unreasonable; that could be every bit as depressing as having to hide your true self in order to gain acceptance.

I do agree that inner peace is most important, though, even if people can’t always recognize that while they’re in the middle of a hard situation. Glad he doesn’t have so much stress on him anymore.

  9. Frida_K says:

He seems like he’s become a man of substance AND he’ll age well, I think. Some men, like Rob Lowe, were pretty as young men and don’t necessarily age well. WM will age nicely and I think the prettiness of him will smooth out so that he’ll end up handsome, not pretty, when he’s older. That’s a good thing. And his thoughtful personality and smarts will take him far.

Good for him, I wish him joy in this life!

    • Sara says:

Rob Lowe didn’t age well? Rob Lowe, the 50 yr old actor didn’t age well? Are we living in the same world. He’s always getting asked how he looks so great after all these years and alcohol abuse, because HE DOES look great. He was on the cover of Vanity Fair a few yes ago and he was shirtless. He had the body of a 25 yr old. He aged well! Some of us really are too critical if we think someone like Rob Lowe looks bad for his age.

      • Frida_K says:

No, no, it’s not that he “looks bad for his age” but–and this is my opinion, maybe not yours–looking overly-boyish (or girlish) when one is much older is not necessarily a gift. After awhile, one would hope to have a tad more gravitas.

I’ve never been attracted to super-pretty guys anyway, so when I look at Rob Lowe, my personal reaction is to think that he’s never quite gotten past being so pretty, which is not necessarily a good look for an older man. “Aging well” in his case (in my opinion) would have been if he had gotten a little more mature looking.

Objectively, however, yes, he has held up well over the years.

      • hunter says:

I’m all over Rob Lowe like white on rice so yes he’s hot.

      • Kori says:

I actually think Rob Lowe looks *better* now. 🙂 I was never a huge fan of his looks when he was younger–too pretty-boy for me. Now that he’s got some wear on him, I find him more appealing. Same with John Stamos.

  10. CommentingBunny says:

Remember the laminated list episode of Froends? Rachel says to Ross, “Yeah, that’s why you’ll never get with Isabella Rosselleni. Geography.”

I feel the same way about celebrity crushes’ sexuality. It’s not like I’ve got a better shot with Benedict Cumberbatch because he’s straight than I do with Wentworth Miller. It’s not gonna happen anyway* so I might as well enjoy the view and the fantasies.

*except that it’s totally going to happen with BC and me, obvs.

  11. FingerBinger says:

I’ve always liked Wentworth. He has an interesting background. He’s part black, was born in England and went to Yale. He’s right about people already knowing he was gay to some degree. People kind of figured he was gay and didn’t care.

  12. Mixtape says:

Longtime WM fan here, and I just have to say that the article is missing an important part of the back story. At the height of Prison Break mania, Perez Hilton made it his personal mission to out WM. This got Perez a lot of press, and also resulted in WM being harassed about his sexuality in every single interview. In some, he outright denied being gay, but in most he was pretty vague–leading to more analysis (cattiness) by Perez. PB ended, WM became a virtual recluse, and he kind of tells the rest of the story in this interview. For his part, Perez lost weight, seemed to deal with a lot of his personal issues, and has admitted, in a roundabout way, that what he did was wrong. He has also really championed WM since his official coming out, with nary an “I told you so” in sight. Still, as a person who enjoys some good celebrity gossip and snark, reading this is an important reminder that there are real people with real feelings on the other end of these articles and when it comes to certain topics, it is Not My Place to speculate.

    • Kim1 says:

Perez is still a nasty, mean jerk.Loosing weight and having a son has not changed him as evident by his twitter feuds.

  13. kri says:

42?! Son of a bitch.Freaking men, I swear. He is glorious. And I’m glad he’s happy.

  14. Kori says:

I would like to see WM get more work. I’m glad he’s got a new show even if it’s recurring. He was great on Prison Break even as the show got stupider. He played a cop, very well, in an episode of Law & Order: SVU as well not long after PB so he could definitely do the role.
