Best Adapted Screenplay: Slumdog Millionaire by Simon Beaufoy

Simon Beaufoy has won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. This would be his second Oscar, the first being for The Full Monty in 1997, and he was also honored by the Golden Globes and the Writer’s Guild of America for Slumdog Millionaire.

Beaufoy thanked his wife, Dev Patel, and Latika (calling Frieda Pinto by her character’s name) for helping him bring his screenplay alive. He also called himself a “repressed English writer.”

Slumdog Millionaire is the favorite for Best Picture, and this is potentially the first of many honors for the film tonight.
