Petra Ecclestone is selling Candy Spelling’s enormous mansion for $150 million

The Caudwell Children Butterfly Ball held at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London, UK.
In the summer of 2011, a then 22-year-old British heiress to the Formula One fortune, Petra Ecclestone, paid $85 million to buy Candy Spelling’s enormous 73,500 square foot mansion, the largest home in LA County. It was the most expensive residential property listing in the entire US.

Candy Spelling is of course the widow of the late TV magnate, Aaron Spelling, and we know her as Tori Spelling’s mom. She oversaw construction on the monstrous mansion in the late 80s, and has said that she didn’t understand scaling and didn’t realize how huge it would become. The home boasted a bowling alley, barber shop, and various rooms to accommodate Candy’s hobbies like doll collecting, gift wrapping and flower cutting. After Petra bought the estate Candy was appalled to hear that Petra had redone most of Candy’s 90s decor, including painting the custom French fireplaces black. Well maybe Petra renovated with the purpose of flipping the home, because she’s selling it now for Candy’s original asking price, $150 million dollars.

Mother-of-one Petra, 25, bought the 110 room property from called The Manor from the late TV and film mogul Aaron Spelling and his wife Candace in July 2011 for $85million.

At the time, it was the biggest property in LA but the decor was not to the British heiress’s taste and she embarked on a huge redesign.

It took nine weeks and 500 workman to complete the monstrous project, the cost of which doubled her initial investment.

In an interview with W Magazine the following year, Petra who is married to entrepreneur James Stunt, said: ‘I need space,

‘I was living in an apartment before, in London, so it’s a change. That was 5,000 square feet. Then I moved into our other house in London, which was 20,000 square feet.’

She added: ‘I know that the house is huge, and yes, it really is quite overwhelming, but with the other houses we looked at that were a similar size to this, you felt like you were in a museum. ‘

Following the renovation, the master suite alone measured 7,000 square feet and has its own kitchen and living room.

On the second floor are six huge guest bedrooms, including the Prince Charles suite, where Charles and Diana once stayed.

Outside, she doesn’t have a garage. Instead, Mrs Stunt has a ‘motor court’ with space for 100 cars, including her white Ferrari and white Rolls-Royce Ghost, and Stunt’s black Lamborghini and black Rolls-Royce.
As well as its 14 bedrooms, the property has three hair salons, a massage room, a walk-in wardrobe so large it has a second level accessed by an internal staircase.

Then there is the house’s main sweeping double staircase, inspired by the one featured in Gone with the Wind.
For entertaining, the place also has its own nightclub, cinema, and bowling alley.
According to the LA Times the property, which is 1500 square feet bigger than the White House, is being shown privately to potential buyers.

[From Daily Mail]

I want to know if Petra bought the home thinking it would make for awesome parties and that she would love it there, and if she realized over time it that it was way too huge for her new family. (She’s 25 now and just had her first baby, with billionaire husband James Stunt, in February of last year.) Or did Petra buy the mansion with the intention of flipping it and making a profit? (She called it a good investment when she bought it.) If the Daily Mail is correct and she spent another $85 million on renovations (I don’t know if I believe that considering that they only lasted 9 weeks) then she’s taking a $20 million loss. It could be a tax break though.

As an aside, I love taking historical house tours and I’ve been to the Vanderbilt Biltmore mansion in Asheville, NC. (It was built by Gloria Vanderbilt’s uncle in the 1890s.) I was interested in comparing this estate, dubbed “The Manor,” to Biltmore. People Magazine claims that The Manor is 73,500 square feet. They may be including outdoor spaces because Wiki lists it at 56,500 square feet. Biltmore is a whopping 178,926 square feet. So Biltmore is about two to three times larger than The Manor. Maybe Candy knew exactly what she was doing when she planned that ostentatious home. After all, there are larger grand estates. I would love for The Manor to be turned into a house museum with period decor from the early 1990s. They could support the upkeep with tours and merchandise.

Here’s a link to a video with scenes from inside the mansion as Candy had it. These photos are from the original listing, with Candy’s decor.

    How spectacularly vulgar.

  2. Audrey says:

See, I can’t imagine ever wanting a house that large

I can’t imagine wanting more than 4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms

    • LadyMTL says:

Seriously! I honestly don’t understand the appeal of these ginormous homes. I mean, I suppose if you have all the money then you can build a massive mansion but…why? It’s vulgar and ostentatious and no one really needs that much space unless they’re the freaking Duggars and have 43 kids.

As much as I do love touring historical homes and palaces (Versailles!) they’re not exactly necessary in this day and age.

I guess that her house is too small now that she has a kid >”<

  4. LAK says:

Based on the W magazine article that accompanied the redesign, whoever buys it needs to spend another big chunk of money since Petra turned it into a black and white monstrosity. Nightclub feel is how the article described it.

    What Tori wouldn’t give…

  6. Lucretia says:

I like the idea of a house museum with 90s decor; there could be 60s, 70s, and 80s wings as well–carpeting in the bathrooms, gold-flocked wallpaper, orange shag carpets, the possibilities are endless. The doll collecting room could bring the creepy factor.
    More money than taste.

  7. eliza says:

While my taste is not like Candy’s, I certainly do not think Ecclestone’s renovations did the mansion any favors. As another poster mentioned, the decor now is like a nightclub and that to me is waaaaaay tackier than Spelling’s taste.

  8. Jackson says:

Can you imagine being home alone in that thing?? It’d be like living in the Overlook from The Shining.

    • Sooloo says:

LOL, I always think about pets in that thing. If you had a cat or two, you’d never EVER set sight on them again!

    • Willa says:

I know right? But even if you weren’t alone it would still feel like you were! Too big!!!!

  9. GiGi says:

If you can, look up pics of the new house after she remodeled it. It’s really gorgeous. She took a pink chintz monster and really streamlined it into a modern, livable house. Of course, it’s still OTT and ridiculous, but it’s so much better than Candy’s style.

    • eliza says:

I dunno. Looks like a nightclub and cigar bar to me. Neither she nor Spelling have what I would call good taste. Just my opinion though.

    • LAK says:

Nope. Still think it looks like a nightclub. And what’s with the black and white strip in the hallway??!!!

    • OriginallyBlue says:

I actually like that very much. I don’t understand why people love white furniture, but I like the look.

    • Mike says:

All these people are trying to live like Louis XIV. They taste are far to flashy for me and having so many all-white rooms would make me afraid to ever have kids in there

    • littlestar says:

It looks beautiful, she did a great job re-styling that house. Still way too big for anyone to live in, but it is gorgeous.

    • Valois says:

I prefered Vandy’s hallway. Not saying I was a fan or I’d style my home that way (haha), but the b/w looks horrible imo.

    • holly hobby says:

Nope cold and black. At least I liked Candy’s stairway.

    • Maria of MD says:

No, thank you. Give me a really good mid-century modern house on a large lot with trees and I’d be happy.

  10. EscapedConvent says:

I find all this Spelling Manor fu grotesquely entertaining, yet Candy Spelling and Petra Ecclestone are both nauseatingly tacky. First, Ecclestone buys it, then redecorates it, spending multi-millions. Now the next idiot who buys this behemoth will have to spend more millions to undo what Ecclestone did?

If Petra E. bought that place intending to flip it, she’s a fool, because didn’t Candy Spelling have that house on the market for several tears with no takers? Anyone who can afford that house can get a much better place than that ugly thing. It sounded to me like before Petra, no one was interested in that house. We’ll see what happens.

    • holly hobby says:

Maybe someone from China will buy it. That’s where all the money is – Asia. The overseas businessmen are currently buying up houses in my hometown and pretty much making it unaffordable to buy. So I won’t be surprised that this is marketed to foreigners.

I bet the first thing the new owner will do is sandblast the black fireplace. Sorry I don’t like my fireplace painted.

  11. watchmaker says:

150 million, eh? I now know how my next paycheck will be spent…

  12. YummyMummy says:

Gigi thanks for the link, I love to sneak a peek and see how the other half lives. But I have to say i like my 3000 feet 5/3 much better! Money doesn’t buy taste!

  13. Mike says:

Somebody could break into the house or actually be living in it and you would never know, It would be like they were living down the block from you. I would not feel very safe in a house that echoes. Imagine having a small child that gets away from you? You would be looking all day.

  14. OriginallyBlue says:

The place sounds incredibly tacky and I got exhausted just reading about the place, cannot imagine living there. Unless you are housing your entire extended family, that house is too large. What if you got lost? People wouldn’t find you for days.

  15. Lucy2 says:

I kind of like the renovations, but can’t believe all that only took 9 weeks.
That house is so grossly large, and most if the rooms seem uncomfortably big.

  16. Cinderella says:

That place is massive. They probably haven’t seen 2/3 of the house for the past few months.
    I love Petra’s style, though.

  17. E says:

And the Dynasty tune playing on the background…

  18. ClaireB says:

She should divide it into appartments, and rent them to low income families. How many can you fit in this 75.000 sft monster of a house ? I know, i know..crazy idea. But it would be beautiful!

  19. Alarive says:

Empty chairs like that make me really sad, for some reason. It’s like no one showing up to your birthday party.

  20. kri says:

“Mrs. Stunt”?! Are you kidding me with this. Most apt surname ever. What made her parents basically name her “Stone Eccle-stone”? Are these people new Brit money? They are almost as vulgar as the Spellings.

  21. rep says:

Black and white, just like Kris KS home. No color in a home is drab. It looks like a masonic hall.

  22. holly hobby says:

I love looking at pictures old houses – especially those from the better half (ha!). This house reminds me of the book Barbra Streisand put out of her “barn” a few years ago. Some of the rooms were nice but some were over the top too! Babs also had a room for gift wrapping and floral arrangement. She also had a doll room. Sorry but porcelain dolls are creepy.

    • Maria of MD says:

Dolls are even creepier if you remember that for ancient peoples such dolls/figurines were meant to house the spirits of the dead.

  23. Pepsi Presents...Coke says:

    They’re all nuts.

  24. Leaflet says:

I read somewhere that Petra came to the U.S. with her husband in hopes that she would get a reality t.v. deal, and since that has not happened she’s giving up. I guess loads of people in her social class have home sizes are akin to this, but I do think that she may have went all out because she thought it would help get her that t.v. deal she was looking for. Glad it didn’t work out. Does anyone know if she is she moving back to Europe? We have enough fame whores in the U.S. as it is.

  25. From says:

She and her sister always make themselves out to look so trashy. So much money, so little taste. They could have gone to college but they’d prefer to be reality tv stars.
