Gwyneth Paltrow is such an ‘elitist diva’ that no one in TV will work with her?

I go back and forth on Gwyneth Paltrow’s career these days, and I’m talking about her acting career, not her side-projects with Goop and Tracy Anderson. Gwyneth is supposed to an actress, and an A-list actress at that. She’s won an Oscar, she’s worked with major directors, she’s told Courtney Love: “Once you’re A-list, you’re always A-list.” I know how Gwyneth thinks of herself, and she sees herself as a movie star. But Gwyneth has also “slummed it” on Glee and tried to make herself into a country singer, deigning to perform on country music shows and the like. I also think that film roles began drying up for Gwyneth several years ago, which is why she looked to amuse herself with projects like Goop. So, would Gwyneth deign to do TV on a more permanent basis? She might. But Star Mag says that TV doesn’t want her.

It isn’t just some of her fans who are fed up with Gwyneth Paltrow’s elitist antics — Hollywood is following suit.

“Her difficult behavior and diminishing star power have made it difficult for her to get leading movie roles,” divulges an industry insider. Now Gwyneth has turned to her Plan B: a TV role. However Gwyneth’s diva ways aren’t any more welcome on the small screen.

“Networks have been interested in her, but she wants $1 million per episode – and it’s ridiculous! Plus she wants control of casting and script changes. She drives people crazy, so they move on.”

The source says Gwyneth’s bad attitude cost her leading roles on two upcoming prime-time shows, CSI: Cyber and Bad Judge.

“Now she’s starting to panic, but unless she gets a reality check, this will keep happening. People won’t keep putting up with her forever.”

[From Star Magazine, print edition]

I really can’t see Gwyneth on a CSI spinoff, although the money would be great. She just wouldn’t do that, I think. But I could see her being interested in a premium cable show, like Masters of Sex (something like that) or even something that was built around her, like Halle Berry got with CBS’s Extant. Again, I’m of two minds on this – I think Gwyneth probably needs the money and she needs a steady paycheck, because keeping up four massive properties around the world is expensive. But I also don’t think she would deign to do TV on a more permanent basis. In any case, Gossip Cop spoke to Gwyneth’s rep and he said the Star story is “all made up.” But who believes Gwyneth’s rep these days? That’s the same person who was denying, denying, denying that there was any trouble in Gwyneth and Chris’s marriage.

I don’t think Ryan Murphy feels that way. He seems ok with her. Hasn’t she been on Glee a few times?

Paltrow, to me, does not seem that interested in working in film full time. Seems she picks and chooses her projects when she needs the attention.

    • Incredulous says:

Season five of American Horror Story, you say? I’d watch it, just to see Jessica Lange school Gwyneth on diva antics.

      • Casey says:

        perfect!

      • kyra says:

I’d like to see Gwyneth as a guest star on House of Cards, where Robin Wrights character humiliates her, ruins her reputation and has her on her knees begging for mercy.

Gwyneth Paltrow an elitist diva? Noooooooooo, you don’t say!…

  3. Brin says:

My only question is why is that a question?

  4. Monie says:

Today it finally happened for me. After years of ambivalence, this chick’s hair annoys me. She need a more mature style. The tucked behind the ear, center-parted hair is not working.

  5. Renee says:

That dress doesn’t fit her properly. And she needs to stop straightening her hair. Embrace your natural curls, gurrl.

  6. Arhodo says:

On a side note, I really like what she’s wearing.

I’m going to write a revisionist history pilot centered around GOOP as a middle-aged Marie Antoinette. Every trailer for the show will be Gwynnie in a sky-high powdered wig smirking at the camera and saying “Let them eat cake”. She won’t have to even act.

Any other ideas for a GOOP centered tv show?

  8. Jenny12 says:

The only thing that Hollywood cares about is how much money and how fast can it be made? They don’t care about divas. They’re used to them.

  9. Hissyfit says:

Don’t forget, she only pick roles where she plays minor / supporting roles because working as an actress is very hard. *rollseye

    • Leaflet says:

      @ Hissyfit,
I actually think she us being truthful about going for the lesser characters regarding roles, so that she can be more present with her kids. I think that’s a good thing.

  10. Diana says:

I think a lot of people would sever their arms for the chance to work with her, diva or no.

I think the real problem is her image with the public. Because could you separate Gwyneth Paltrow from a character at this point? I can’t. She’s just Gwyneth, in whatever she does. I also can’t imagine liking or rooting for her as the main heroine on her own show. I think I would think about my dislike for GOOP and everything about her and switch off.

  11. Jem says:

Did her appearances on Glee boost ratings?

  12. lunchcoma says:

I can’t imagine her on a CSI type show, either. It’s not as if she needs to work or needs money.

But, yeah, I could see her doing the prestige drama thing. I’m just not sure if the combination of her acting ability and her star power is enough to carry a show, and I really can’t see her agreeing to play second fiddle and condescending to do television at the same time.

    • Eleonor says:

I think GOOP would kill to land a role in a show like Mad Men.

      • lunchcoma says:

Oh, I can certainly agree with that, but Mad Men itself has no need. They already have an icy blonde who’s best playing herself. I don’t know if any of the established shows would have more than a guest spot for her. If she’s to come back to TV, I think she’d need a new show, and all she could be promised is that it would be the next Mad Men – which often isn’t the case.

  13. Pam says:

I think she’d be good as a guest on Criminal Minds

  14. kri says:

And in other shocking news today, the sky appears to be some shade of blue. Jay-Z blue.

  15. Dame Snarkweek says:

A heroine is someone you pull for. I can’t imagine really wanting something amazing to happen to her character. Sad but true. And if she tried to play an underdog or someone downtrodden it would fall horribly flat.

  16. Mira says:

I doubt this story. Gwyneth may be an elitist snob (redundant?) but she knows when and with whom she needs to turn on the charm and do some major sucking up. On a side note though…I just watched Shakespeare in Love for the first time and that movie does NOT stand the test of time. It’s SUCH a 90s movie so I understand why people hyped it up to the point of an Oscar (it happens) at the time, but I thought it was God awful. Gwyneth’s acting is laughable; she does not deserve that Oscar. She’s definitely in the hindsight is 20/20 lower-tier of Oscar winners. Come to think of it, not that I’m well-versed in her movies, but she’s not good in anything (maybe Royal Tenenbaums but you know, Wes Anderson can make you look better). She belongs on TV or should just quit acting altogether.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

Thought so even at the time. Gwyneth seems to be simpering through most of her movies. She should try a disaster pic. No, really – a frantic, heroic Gwyneth trying to save her children/husband from a flood/earthquake/tsunami/sharknado could give her some depth. Especially if it is set in 1930s Mississippi or something like that.

    • Maria of MD says:

And that film beat Saving Private Ryan. Go figure.

    • islandwalker says:

I remember leaving the theater after seeing SIL and thinking….I don’t get the hype. It was a lightweight romp. The acting was both flat and over the top.

Elizabeth and Saving Private Ryan still hold up.

  17. CarolinaBelle says:

Hollywood has shown that it will put up with any and all antics if you can bring in the $$$. GP has neither the talent nor the fan base to do so.

  18. Dancinnancy says:

I can’t stand her now but at the time Shakespeare in Love was my favorite movie, Joe Fiennes was my favorite brother, and I was thrilled with her Oscar (less so with her dress).

I hated Country Strong but enjoyed her rendition of Umbrella on Glee.

    • Ally8 says:

Joseph Fiennes was fab back in the day. I also loved him in “Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence” (bonus: Rufus Sewell!).

He made one too many stinkers, though. This was the worst: “Killing Me Softly”. A hopelessly cheesy, lame noir.

  19. Ldub says:

I’m distracted by the over use of the word “deign” in this article. It comes across as desperate to sound intelligent. There are many synonyms and phrases that could get the job done without the writer sounding quite so pretentious. I get it, it works, once, but three times in one short article? It ends up making you look less intelligent and too lazy to think of (or look up) a synonym.

  20. luna says:

I really feel Goop looks much much better with a little bit of weight on her!

  21. mazomazohyst says:

I have a huge soft spot for her, not because i think she’s a good actress (she isn’t), but because of Iron Man and because she’s my type, so I would watch a tv-show with Gwyn as heroine. They should make an Iron Man spin-off with Rescue for tv, or something. And if Gwyn really wanted on tv, why not start with a supporting role in AOS?

I agree, that more weight suits her and she really needs to stop torturing her hair so much.

  22. iseepinkelefants says:

Lest I remind you lot of Gwen in View From the Top? Could have been a cute movie with another actress, but with Fish sticks I was hoping the plane would go down. She’s just not likeable and the only way a show would work for her is if it was okay to hate her character. Like maybe we’re secretly rooting for the rest of the cast? I can’t think if any shows have done that (I’m sure at some point?) but hey maybe it would be “groundbreaking” *eyeroll*

But you know what even then when a character is unlikeable Don Draper, Frank Underwood, you never really hate them, hate them. Hmmm… Fishy should just stick to getting cameos in movies from her family connections. She can’t pull off a movie on her own, she’s unlike able, she’s a carp actress. It seems the only way the public can tolerate her is if she’s dying or is only in the movie for a few minutes. Even then I can’t watch Iron Man because I just hate her so much.

  23. DD says:

Deign, deign, deign, deign, deign and DEIGN!
    Enough already.
