Vince Vaughn, Elisabeth Moss reportedly ‘in talks’ for ‘True Detective’ Season 2

The last time I checked in with the casting rumors for True Detective Season 2, “sources” were saying that Taylor Kitsch and Colin Farrell were pretty much a sure thing. For Season 2, people are saying that there will be at least four major characters, three dudes and one lady. Many people said that Nic Pizzolatto (the creator/writer/director) was aiming high for Season 2 and he wanted Christian Bale and Jessica Chastain, at the very least. Throwing Taylor and Colin’s names into the ring didn’t sound like Pizzolatto was getting the caliber of actor he really wanted. But this might be worse. Sources are telling TVLine that Vince Vaughn is in talks to play a major character in Season 2. VINCE VAUGHN.

The True Detective Season 2 rumor mill has churned out another name: Vince Vaughn.

TVLine has learned exclusively that the Swingers actor is in preliminary talks to play one of the three leads in the HBO drama’s upcoming second season.

In mid-July, word spread that Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are reportedly in serious discussions for two of the season’s lead roles, while series creator Nic Pizzolatto has said that the new season will be set in California and feature “four central roles.”

At the Television Critics Association summer press tour last month, HBO president Michael Lombardo said a Season 2 casting announcement was imminent, adding, “[T]he two scripts we have are…more exciting than the first season.”

[From TV Line]

I remember a time when Vince Vaughn was a hot property. I remember a time when he did good work in interesting films. That time? The 1990s. For the better part of a decade, Vince has been stuck in a neverending cycle of bro-comedies and “family films” and not to be too superficial, but he does not look good these days. So… will Vince be our new Matthew McConaughey? Yeah, I hope not.

Oh, and after I wrote up all of that, I saw this – Elisabeth Moss is also in talks for the one major female role. She’s done with filming Mad Men, so she’s looking for her next big gig. I could actually see her doing great work in this kind of show. I’m all for this casting rumor!!

Uh, you know, maybe this could be his “John Travolta in Pulp Fiction” moment….

  2. don't kill me i'm french says:

Moss and the actress of The Killing are rumored ! Yes!
Vaughn really needs a good career move ( he’s lazy…)

  3. Size Does Matter says:

I love Vince Vaughn. Granted, I haven’t seen any of his movies since The Break Up, but I love him nonetheless. “I want you to WANT to help me do this dishes.” Classic.

    Plus, he’s tall. Sold.

    • ichsi says:

I don’t love Vaughn but I think he’s an unfairly underrated actor. Sure, his main out-put are dumb buddy movies but he has proven to be an apt actor if given inspired material in the past.

If True Detective is that kind of inspired material on the other hand I dunno. I thought the cynicism of season one was on disgruntled 15-year old white highschool-boy niveau and I was bored of it by episode four.

But to be shallow, yeah, with Vaughn I’d finally get an actor tall enough for me on television, so GO rumours!

    • Chris says:

      Show Lemons!

    • shannon says:

i love this movie. I watch it every single time it comes on TV. “let’s honor the commitment.”

  4. Ra says:

Weight gain or not, I’d still hit it. Hard. On Sunday.

  5. FingerBinger says:

Elisabeth Moss played a detective in Top of the Lake and she was excellent. I can see her in this role. As for Vince Vaughn, he can be a good dramatic actor when given the chance.

  6. Anon says:

Yes! Elizabeth Moss would be huge. She was excellent in Top of the Lake.

  7. elle says:

I LOVE Elisabeth Moss! I hope this is true

    • Lena says:

I didn’t see top of the Lake but I hear the role she would be taking in t.d. is quite similar to it. (hard bitten detective). I just would hate to see her typecast so soon after doing great work as Peggy in Mad Men. It could happen easily with two roles back to back that are the same.

  8. LAK says:

Vince Vaughn started his career in drama roles. He was very good, but he switched to comedy and that made him a star which made the public forget his stint in drama. Having him on ‘true detective’ isn’t that big a stretch when you consider his start in hollywood.

It’s similar to MM starting out in drama, switching to romcoms which made everybody forget he ever worked in drama and were subsequently surprised at his current switch back to drama.

    • Green Girl says:

Yes, exactly. People remember Swingers and Wedding Crashers, but they don’t seem to remember (or just didn’t see) his earlier stuff. I would love to see him take on this role, actually. It’s so out in left field that it just might work.

    • JennySerenity says:

Yup. I can se it, too. Did anyone ever see Return to Paradise, the movie he did w/ Anne Heche? Pretty decent movie and his non-comedic acting skills were right up there.

      • LAK says:

You and I might be the only people who saw that film. LOL!!! Pretty decent film too.

      • mayamae says:

I forgot about that one! He was great in that. I mentioned above that he was good in The Cell, too.

    • holly hobby says:

I think he was on the Psycho reboot too. Yeah it didn’t make any money but no one can say that Vince is a one-note player.

On the other hand I am currently slogging through True Detective (I borrowed it from the library). Is it really this slow and boring? I don’t get the hype. I’ve watched 3 episodes already and it is s-l-o-w. I don’t think I’m going to continue watching because I just wasted one night on this and I want this night back.

      • mayamae says:

I haven’t watched it. I usually like dark and bleak, but I read season one had lots of intense child molestation – I just wasn’t up for it.

  9. eliza says:

I have always liked Vince Vaughn, so I would be ok with him and Moss on the show.

  10. mom2two says:

I am seeing that Vaughn would be playing the villain. This could be a great career move for him. He needs to remind people that he can do more than stoner bro-tastic comedies (remember when everyone was falling all over him for Swingers?). Elisabeth Moss and Michelle Forbes would be good additions to the cast should this all turn out to be true.

  11. Josefa says:

I’m only familiar with Vaughn’s awful ’00s comedies so I won’t make any comments regarding his talent, but YES at Elisabeth Moss. Love her!

  12. Dani says:

Ugh I used to seriously crush on him HARD but he’s looking kinda…frumpy? lately.

    • Hiddlesgirl85 says:

Yep — I had a serious crush on him too! Especially around the time he filmed that “Psycho” remake and Old School. Unfortunately, he has aged terribly (thanks alcohol!).

He also recently produced a Glenn Beck project, so he can go kick rocks in my book.

      • Dani says:

He was even cute up till The Break Up and Wedding Crashers. Is that what the bloat is? Gross. He’s fallen off the wagon in more ways that one.

      • Hiddlesgirl85 says:

You’re right — he was still good looking in Wedding Crashers and The Breakup. That was a pretty quick descent for him in the looks department then. Alcohol really does a number on us when we age (if consumed too heavily).

      • holly hobby says:

During the Break Up, he was dating Aniston and US Weekly had a whole article about how he lost weight and worked out when he was with her. I’m guessing he’s settling into middle age right now (wife and baby).

      • Aurora says:

He’s had his up and downs with his weight for years. I remember on the Old School dvd audio commentary he said he lost about 30 lbs. for the movie. During the Break-up he had quit smoking and gained weight then after the movie he started smoking again and lost weight. And on Ellen I remember him promoting a Christmas movie a year or two later and he said he had quit smoking again.

  13. Hiddlesgirl85 says:

What about male TV actors? I know this is an HBO mini-series, but I’d like to hear that male TV actors being considered for some roles as well. Film actors have been taking a lot of plum TV roles from these actors recently. I don’t know why casting directors keep acting like film actors are exponentially better actors than TV ones.

  14. kri says:

Elizabeth would be a great choice. I don’t know about Vaughn…my first reaction was WTF. But I think there’s actually alot of crazy in there, and not the comic kind. If he could tap into that…as far as his looks, if this is a cop/mystery show, maybe they are looking for “rumpled and messy”..

    • LAK says:

Look up his early roles. Before he became a star. Straight up drama. Very good too. There was even a film where he played a serial killer. Pretty chilling. I’m constantly surprised that he turned out comedy so well considering that he was a much better drama actor.

  15. JWQ says:

Vince Vaughn looks completely uninterested in every role I have seen him playing! He seems like he doesn’ t care about his character, the movie… nothing! He’ s just there, delivers his line in the most monotone voice and face possible, and leaves! Maybe it’ s just because the movies he makes are usually crap, he only does it for the money, and would really like to be somewhere else, but… I can see it, and it totally puts me off! I haven’ t seen any of his dramas (except that Psycho remake… and no comment): was he really better at them than the so-called comedies he’ s been doing for the past 10/15 years?

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

He’s def’ no Chris Cooper thats for sure.

      • Tiffany says:

Where in the world is Chris Cooper. I think the last thing I saw him in was The Muppets.

    • AnoANo says:

EXACTLY what I think of VV…he is bored and phones in every character so he can get back to doing whatever it is he loves to do, but it’s not acting.

  16. kaligula says:

I have no doubt EM would do excellent work in it if she is cast. But personally I think she has too much exposure right now. I feel like I know what she can do and would not be drawn to watch it because of her. For some reason. I thought of Michelle Rodriguez for this part. She would be a much more compelling choice IMO.

    • mayamae says:

I love Michelle Rodriguez, but has she ever played a role that wasn’t a cop or soldier?

      • kaligula says:

        Girl boxer? : )

I know what you mean, though. Variety is good. I thought of CCH Pounder and Regina King for instance, but they both had very strong, memorable roles as cops on tv recently (or relatively recently….).

Hmmm…how about Sanaa Latham? Laurie Metcalf? Heck I’d even consider Jenna Fisher.

  17. juniper says:

Vince fucking Vaughn??? Someone must be seriously deluded on TD is they are seriously considering that. Moss would be excellent though.

  18. Talie says:

I hope all the Mad Men actors stick to TV… I’ll miss seeing them! I don’t think any of them really broke out in film, although Christina and January have films that will be at Venice and TIFF. But still…

  19. bettyrose says:

I just hope season 2 moves away from sex crimes and doesn’t go the way of The Killing: one good plot line turned into a full on horror show of sex crimes

  20. shannon says:

Vince Vaughn is redundant for sure, but he’s funny as hell. I’ve loved him in every part I’ve seen him in. I think we should see what the man can do before tearing him down.

  21. AnoANo says:

VV peaked long ago and it’s been a descent in horrible romscoms and awful family films even since. He could really use the career boost and a chance to show the public there is more to his acting than just playing a slppy frat-boy- and he is more than a one-trick pony. he has shown us the past decade. Dude has 2 kids to feed now, so needs to expand the repertoire!!

  22. lucy2 says:

I love the idea of Elisabeth Moss getting such a high profile role. She’s an excellent actress and I think she’d be great in the show.
I don’t really care for Vaughn these days, but who knows, maybe the right role can turn it around for him.

  23. kyra says:

    oh please not Vince Vaughn….
